Catholic Church investigating claims children were prostituted to Church officials

The Catholic Church has confirmed it is investigating claims children from a Wellington boys’ home were prostituted out to Church officials.

It is also calling on anyone with personal information on the matter to come forward and speak to them.

The allegations were made at a Royal Commission of Inquiry hearing on Tuesday by Keith Wiffin, a former ward of the state who lived at Epuni Boys’ Home in Lower Hutt in the 1970s.

A victim of sexual abuse at the home when he was 11 Wiffin, now 61, said he never personally experienced the practice himself, but had learnt the Church was investigating the claims.

He said he had also been told the information by a former ward of the state who lived at Epuni around the time he lived there, who had experienced the practice.

He alleged boys were taken from the home in a van on several occasions by a housemaster, Alan Moncrief-Wright, to a Church site, where clergymen would walk around the van looking at the boys, selecting the ones they wanted to sexually abuse. Eleanor Parkes, director of New Zealand’s ECPAT Child Alert organisation, which focuses on addressing the sexual exploitation of children, said the practice, if true, would fit within the United Nations and New Zealand’s definition of child trafficking.

“Trafficking is the reception, recruitment, transport, transfer, concealment, or harbouring of any person for the purposes of exploitation. It does not have to involve crossing international borders at all, and most of the trafficking cases in New Zealand that we know about are domestic,” Parkes said. On Wednesday, the Church confirmed it was investigating the claims and that it had previously provided information to the Commission relating to the alleged events.

Catherine Fyfe, chairperson of Te Rōpū Tautoko, an agency created to coordinate Catholic engagement with the Royal Commission, said the information formed part of the extensive documentation which the agency provided to the Commission.

“Church authorities are aware of an allegation similar to that raised by Mr Keith Wiffin at the Royal Commission this week.

“Church authorities continue to work with survivors to investigate matters associated with the complaint. The Royal Commission will be aware of this from documents the Church has provided,” Fyfe said.

“The agency, bishops and congregational leaders of the Church are urging anyone who might have personal knowledge of the matters raised by Mr Wiffin to contact the Royal Commission or the Church’s National Office for Professional Standards.

“The Catholic Church in Aotearoa New Zealand asked to be part of the Royal Commission’s inquiry and will continue to strongly support the inquiry and respond there to any issues that are raised, including Mr Wiffin’s evidence,” Fyfe said.

Moncrief-Wright was convicted and jailed on a number of sexual violation charges against boys, including Wiffin, and has since died. Wiffin has previously given evidence to the Commission on two occasions.

At Tuesday’s hearing, he told the Commission of his own experiences going out on excursions in the van, driven by Moncrief-Wright.

The housemaster would take boys to pick up videos and lollies for the Saturday night entertainment and would sometimes take groups of boys to see movies.

He said it wasn’t uncommon for boys to be taken to the homes of staff members and away for weekends.

In March, the Catholic Church formally apologised to survivors of abuse for the first time.

Cardinal John Dew made the apology at a hearing for the Commission, on behalf of the bishops and congregational leaders in New Zealand, stating the church could offer no excuses for the actions of the church that caused harm.

He said the abuse was perpetrated by people, such as priests, brothers and sisters and lay people that victims should have been able to trust and that the systems and culture of the church allowed abuse to occur.

Dew acknowledged the abuse caused pain, hurt and trauma which continued to have an impact on the lives of survivors.

Abuse in faith-based institutions such as churches or religious schools between 1950 and 1999 makes up a large part of the inquiry.

Jan’s testimony might explain why Maricopa County officials do not have Admin passwords or access to the Dominion voting machines.

Jan also testified under oath that county staff, not even IT staff were allowed access to the voting machines and that she witnessed Dominon employees with a laptop computer in the counting room.

Jan worked 6 days at MCTEC, has an MBA, and project management background in technology.

Later during questioning by Republican Rep. Mark Finchem, Jan Bryant told the Arizona lawmakers that there were daily election ballot deliveries to MCTEC by Runbeck Election Services. According to witness testimony (transcribed below), these deliveries happened in 2020 from Nov. 3rd to at least the 10th.

Repeated explanations by supervisors at that time was that “Runbeck has high speed scanners”.

According to Jan Bryant, she was told the ballots were scanned offsite by Runbeck and then delivered to the Maricopa County Election Center.

This should disqualify all of Maricopa County results.

Jan Bryant: …ten days before they quit tabulating they thought they were done. And then more truck loads of ballots would come in. And I’m like, how can you not know how many ballots are still out there.

State House Rep. David L. Cook: Mr. Chairman I’m sorry. WOULD YOU REPEAT THAT. They thought they were done, and then there was WHAT?

Jan Bryant: They thought they were done multiple times. Multiple times the people that were running the rooms thought they were done (counting ballots), or almost done. Or were gonna be done Wednesday morning (Nov. 4th), then Thursday morning (Nov. 5th), then Friday morning. Then it went on the whole next week. And I’m like, I asked the question, You don’t know how many ballots are still left to come in? I don’t know who does, again…process…project management, but zero.

State House Rep. Mark Finchem: On that point Ma’am, I’m tracking with you but, what day did the truck show up?

Jan Bryant: Every day, yeah, every day.

Mark Finchem: OK. Just a minute. I want to make sure we capture this properly. So there were trucks that showed up on the 3rd, and then the 4th, and then the 5th, and how long did that go on. How many days?

Jan Bryant: I wasn’t there the whole last week. My last day was the 10th and they were still coming in. They were coming from a company called Runbeck, that does the high speed scanning and printing of duplications, and I think the military ballots. And now I’m getting out of my comfort level here talking about this. I don’t know what they are doing but those ballots are coming in from a high speed scanning company called Runbeck that…. apparently you haven’t heard of Runbeck.

Mark Finchem: No, I’ve heard of Runbeck Ma’am. What I’m trying to figure out is whether they printed them or if they scanned them. And if they scanned them offsite, to what purpose?

Jan Bryant: I can’t tell you.

Mark Finchem: Wasn’t that your job to scan them? I mean, not your job, but the (MCTEC).

Jan Bryant: No, all the high speed scanning happens at Runbeck. So, those ballots go to Runbeck. As far as I know there were no observers there. I don’t know. I never got called to work at Runbeck. That’s all I can tell you.

Mark Finchem: OK, with all do respect Mr. Cook, now we’ve now opened up a whole new can of worms.

That’s a question for the county employees to explain to you, where those ballots came from that whole next week. I don’t know where they came from.

Rudy Giuliani: So you were there from Nov. 3rd through the 10th. Seven days later (after election) ballots were still coming in.

Jan Bryant: Yes.

Jan Bryant: I watched them go through the tabulation machines. And I watched people working on the adjudication of those ballots.

Rudy Giuliani: And how many ballots.. Jan Bryant: Oh, I don’t know.

Rudy Giuliani: What was the largest number you saw in one day. Just a guess. How many cartons? Jan Bryant (06:58:13): OK, there was….I wasn’t there…there was usually 2 or 3 shifts. I wanna say one day they thought 90,000 was a good number, for a shift. And if they were running multiple shifts a day. It was somewhere between the 3rd and the 10th. State Senator Sylvia Allen (07:00:09): Ms Bryant, I’m curious, why did the county on the last days you were there, brought in county employees to take part in, being part of the observers?

Jan Bryant: They weren’t observing they were actually adjudicating. So they were doing.. I think they just need all hands on deck. I mean, that was the intent, was to get the work done and finish counting because they kept thinking they were done and.

Senator Allen: I was thinking they were working to make up for the lack of not having Republicans. So were we (Republicans) short of having volunteers to go in and observers in Maricopa.

Jan Bryant: I don’t believe so. There was always at least two of us in the tabulation center and at least one in one of the other rooms like signature verification. What the (county) employees were doing was the adjudication work which also requires two different parties to adjudicate each ballot. So you had to have at least 2 of the 3 parties to do that. So that’s what the county employees were doing at the end. They brought them on just to help with the backlog.

State House Rep. Bret Roberts: You got to a point where they continued to say they didn’t know where these trucks of ballots were coming from.

Jan Bryant: It’s not that they didn’t know. It’s that they didn’t know how many were still coming.

Bret Roberts: I assume at this point in time these were not early ballots in any way shape or form. I’m just kind of curious, did anything stand out to you as far as these new ballots, didn’t know where they were coming from, as far as a physical appearance in any way?

Jan Bryant: No. Everything… they just looked like ballots. Just kept coming. They all came in the same bins…..

Mass. churches amassed over $82M in small business PPP loans; Roman Catholic dioceses alone collected over $20M

BOSTON – Massachusetts churches, including Catholic and Christian religious organizations, received upwards of $82 million in forgivable loans through the federal Paycheck Protection Program, according to Small Business Administration data released last month.

The Roman Catholic Dioceses of Worcester, Fall River and Springfield, along with the Archdiocese of Boston, collected over $20 million in PPP loans, distributed among different churches and administrative departments under their jurisdiction. Boston’s Archdiocese, led by Cardinal Sean Patrick O'Malley received the most within this group, with over $8 million in PPP aid.

Ray Delisle, director of communications for the Diocese of Worcester, said the PPP loans were necessary to keep people employed in the diocese, while continuing to provide services to the community during these hard times.

“The purpose of the program was to keep people’s jobs and if we couldn’t keep them employed, they’d be on unemployment, further pressuring the system for support,” Delisle said. “This allowed us to keep on being able to provide the supports that society relies on us for, and we have to keep those going, especially during a pandemic.”

Paycheck Protection Program loans allowed small businesses across the country to borrow up to $10 million to pay for employee wages, utilities and rent, with the opportunity of loan forgiveness as long as the funds were used for their intended purposes.

Larger churches and dioceses would not normally qualify for this kind of government aid, since there is a 500-employee cap for businesses and organizations to qualify for PPP loans, but through lobbying the Catholic Church convinced the Trump administration to grant them an exemption from this rule last year.

Northeastern University law professor Peter Enrich said he sees no legal issue in providing PPP aid to non-taxable entities like churches, since the program was designed to maintain wages and the money ends up in the hands of workers. However, he said there would be a legal issue if the government had denied churches loans because of their religious affiliations.

“To launch an aid program but then say ‘we’re not going to do that for any religious entity’ would raise very serious concerns about the federal Constitution’s free exercise of religion clause,” he said. “The government can’t discriminate against entities just because they are religious entities.”

'Important considerations to why some' secular organization should not have received aid

American Atheists Massachusetts State Director Zachary Bos said the secular organization does not object to religious institutions receiving PPP funding when needed to support their employees, but that there are important considerations to why some of them should not have received aid.

Bos said the church’s non-taxable status is conditional to their abstinence from political influence and lobbying, but that the church often sways political candidates and policy.

“The issue is some of these religious organizations exist solely because of their refusal to follow the rules,” Bos said. “If they wanted to continue with political advocacy, that would be fine. They just have to pay to play like every other organization has to do. I’m not sure why PPP funds should be subsidizing a tax cheat.”

Bos also said churches with valuable assets were not in as much need as small businesses that had no other way of staying open than to secure PPP loans, and that some of the churches in financial trouble were in that position because of past coverups of child sexual abuse.

“It’s especially morally problematic that Catholic dioceses in many places, including Boston, were paying huge settlements and penalties for child sexual abuse,” Bos said. “That money is going out the door and their coffers are being refilled by taxpayer dollars. I don’t see the economic justification for supporting morally abusive businesses.”

Many other Massachusetts nonprofits also received PPP loans, including universities, which amassed over $64 million according to the SBA data. Nonprofit preschools, together with primary and secondary education institutions, received over $175 million in PPP loans. These included schools with religious affiliations.

Religious organizations of other denominations – including synagogues, seminaries and temples – received around $14 million through the program.

Nicolas Duquette is an economist specializing in nonprofit taxation and spending policy at the University of Southern California’s Sol Price School of Public Policy. He said churches have some differences from other nonprofits, but they do depend on hired workers and have costs like others do.

“A church differs from, say, a research university in that a lot more of its resources will come from donations or from people volunteering their efforts for service,” Duquette said. “But there are also many programs that run behind the scenes – soup kitchens, support groups, counseling, daycare centers – that do require paid staff and incur costs.”

Duquette said churches are in fact non-taxable entities, but that it is important to highlight that their payroll is still subject to income taxes, just like wages in for-profit businesses.

“For-profits don’t pay taxes on the money they pay their employees either. They only pay taxes on profits left over after they pay their payroll,” he said. “For purposes of economic policy, we really shouldn’t care if people have a religious or secular job, a business or nonprofit job, if the goal of the program is to keep people employed and able to pay their bills.”

Duquette said that the ambiguity of spending activities in churches is an important factor in some people’s skepticism of their use of donations and financial resources.

“Churches come in all shapes and sizes, and we know less about them than we do about other types of charities and nonprofits because they are not required to disclose their finances in the way that any other secular charity, with only a few exceptions, must,” Duquette said.

“Part of the reason why I think some people are concerned with what the church is up to is that we know so little about their activities, so skepticism has no way to check itself.”

U.S. consumer prices post biggest gain in nearly 12 years as inflation pressures build

U.S. consumer prices increased by the most in nearly 12 years in April as booming demand amid a reopening economy pushed against supply constraints, which could fuel financial market fears of a lengthy period of higher inflation.

The report from the Labor Department on Wednesday also showed a strong building up of underlying price pressures. Demand is being driven by nearly $6 trillion in government relief since the COVID-19 pandemic started in the United States in March 2020 and the vaccination of more than a third of the population.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and many economists largely view higher inflation as transitory, with supply chains expected to adapt and become more efficient. But there are concerns that inflation could linger amid reports that companies are raising wages as they compete for scarce workers. Though job openings are at a record 8.1 million and nearly 10 million people are officially unemployed, companies are scrambling for labor. Generous unemployment benefits, fears of contracting COVID-19, parents still at home caring for children and pandemic-related retirements have been blamed for the disconnect. Average hourly earnings jumped in April.

The consumer price index jumped 0.8% last month, the largest gain since June 2009. The CPI rose 0.6% in March. Food prices increased 0.4%. The cost of food consumed at home also gained 0.4%. The cost of food consumed away from home rose 0.3%. Gasoline prices fell 1.4% after accelerating 9.1% in March. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the CPI climbing 0.2% in April. In the 12 months through April, the CPI shot up 4.2%. That was the largest gain since September 2008 and followed a 2.6% increase in March. The jump mostly reflected the dropping of last spring's weak readings from the calculation. Those so-called base effects are expected to push annual inflation even higher in the months ahead.

U.S. stock index futures extended losses on the data, which investors feared could force the Fed to raise interest rates sooner than expected. The dollar rose against a basket of currencies. U.S. Treasury prices were lower. The Fed slashed its benchmark overnight interest rate to near zero and is pumping money into the economy through monthly bond purchases. The U.S. central bank has signaled it could tolerate higher inflation after years of lower inflation.

Excluding the volatile food and energy components, the CPI soared 0.9%, the largest gain since April 1982. The so-called core CPI rose 0.3% in March. There were increases in prices for used cars and trucks, shelter, airline fares, recreation, motor vehicle insurance as well as household furnishings. In the 12 months through April, the core CPI jumped 3.0% after increasing 1.6% in March.

The Fed tracks the core personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index for its 2% inflation target, a flexible average. The core PCE price index is at 1.8%.

Japan to restart nuclear reactor beyond 40-year limit in June

An aging nuclear reactor in central Japan will be restarted in late June, becoming the first unit to operate beyond the government-mandated 40-year service period under new rules set after the 2011 Fukushima disaster, the operator said Wednesday.

Kansai Electric Power Co. will begin loading nuclear fuel into the No. 3 unit at the Mihama plant in Fukui Prefecture from May 20, with full operation expected to commence after final inspections in late July, according to the utility. The Nuclear Regulation Authority granted approval in 2016 for the reactor to operate beyond the 40-year limit for an additional period of up to 20 years, after screening the company's safety measures for the unit.

The mayor of Mihama also gave his consent for the resumption in February this year, followed by Fukui Gov. Tatsuji Sugimoto on April 28. But the No. 3 unit, which has been idle since the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, will likely operate for just four months until Oct. 25 as the implementation of counterterrorism measures is unlikely to be completed, according to the company. Two other Kansai Electric reactors in Fukui Prefecture have also secured nuclear watchdog approval and local consent to operate beyond the 40-year limit. But the Nos. 1 and 2 reactors at the Takahama plant will not resume operation for the time being as the utility is unlikely to meet a June 9 deadline to complete the implementation of counterterrorism measures.

The Mihama No. 3 unit began commercial operation in 1976. The Takahama No. 1 reactor did so in 1974 and the No. 2 unit in 1975.

Insurance Brokers Sell Assets to Win Approval for $35 Billion Merger

Aon, Willis Towers Watson agree to $3.6 billion deal with rival to help address EU’s antitrust concerns.

Aon PLC and Willis Towers Watson PLC on Wednesday agreed to sell a package of assets to a smaller rival in an effort to win antitrust approval for their $35 billion tie-up to create the world’s largest insurance broker.

The $3.57 billion deal with Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. comes as Aon and Willis are under pressure to address concerns from the European Union’s executive arm around a combination of the No. 2 and No. 3 brokers.

The EU fears that, left unchecked, their merger would narrow customer choice and give the combined entity too much sway over prices for helping clients purchase financial protection against property and casualty damages, trade tensions and cybercrime.

Together, the companies would have combined revenue of more than $20 billion. That would top Marsh & McLennan Cos.’ total of $17.2 billion last year and dwarf the more than $6 billion generated by Gallagher.

Aon and Willis, both registered in Ireland, are betting that the asset sales to Gallagher would resolve the European Commission’s issues by allowing the rival broker to expand its business helping insurers buy reinsurance or protection against claims and extend its reach geographically.

Senators Introduce Bill Forcing Colleges to Disclose Financial Ties With Beijing

Lawmakers recently introduced a bill that would force American colleges to disclose their financial ties with the Chinese regime, including its Confucius Institutes, in order to qualify to receive international students.

The bill, put forward by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), would make such disclosure a condition to a university’s eligibility to be part of the Student and Exchange Visitor Program, which provides approval for schools to enroll students holding non-immigrant visas.

“The centerpiece of this bill is disclosure and transparency,” Grassley said on the Senate floor on May 10. “If the schools want visas for their foreign students, they’ll first have to disclose their ties to the Chinese government.”

The bill comes amid heightened scrutiny on the Chinese regime’s influence on American campuses. A 2020 investigation by the Department of Education found that universities received almost $1.5 billion in contracts and gifts from China from 2014 to 2020.

“The communist regime poses a serious threat to U.S. research as well as undue influence on our college campuses,” Grassley said in a May 5 statement.

One of the vehicles of Beijing’s influence is Confucius Institutes. Billed as Chinese language and culture centers, the institutes have been sharply criticized for promoting Beijing’s propaganda and suppressing academic freedom in universities across the country.

From 2006 to 2019, the Chinese regime poured more than $158 million to about 100 U.S. universities through Confucius Institutes, according to a 2019 U.S. Senate subcommittee on investigations report (pdf). There are currently 47 Confucius Institutes in the country, according to the National Association of Scholars (NAS).

“This legislation will shine a light on any funny business that the Chinese government is trying to play on our campuses under the guise of Confucius Institutes and any financial ties between our educational institutions and the communist regime,” Grassley said in the statement.

The proposed legislation would effectively codify a Trump-era policy proposal that was automatically rescinded when President Joe Biden took office because the proposed rule not been formalized through regulatory processes before the end of former President Donald Trump’s term.

Last year, the Trump administration designated the Washington-based Confucius Institute U.S. Center as a foreign mission. Then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said at the time that the measure was a recognition of the center’s role in “advancing Beijing’s global propaganda and malign influence campaign on U.S. campuses.”

The Senate in March passed a bill that would force host universities to take full control of Confucius Institutes or lose their federal funding.

In the past few years, dozens of Confucius Institutes have closed down around the country. But in their place, many universities have simply entered into new rebranded partnerships with the Chinese regime under a different name, according to the NAS.

Swiss aim to re-open economy, donate AstraZeneca COVID-19 shots

Switzerland aims to expand its economic re-opening and may donate millions of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine doses to developing countries as the Alpine nation grows increasingly confident it is beating back the pandemic.

Health Minister Alain Berset on Wednesday said the country may give 3 million of 5.4 million AstraZeneca doses it has reserved to the COVAX vaccine sharing programme. Switzerland has enough mRNA shots from producers including Pfizer and Moderna to cover 2021 and 2022, Berset said. The government announced plans starting May 31 to re-open indoor dining in restaurants, increase attendance at public events and ease work-from-home requirements as infections, hospitalisations and deaths have fallen. A final decision is due on May 26. AstraZeneca’s shot, restricted in some countries or limited to certain age groups after links to very rare blood clots, has yet to be approved in Switzerland as the Swiss regulator seeks more data. “If it is approved, then only a limited number would be deployed in Switzerland,” Berset told a news conference in Bern. “We looked at it today, and the Interior Ministry has been tasked with making necessary inquiries about how we would donate 3 million doses available to COVAX.”

So far, Switzerland has ordered more than 40 million vaccine doses, including 13.5 million in 2021 and 7 million in 2022 from Moderna, 6 million from Pfizer and its German partner BionTech , 5 million from CureVac and 6 million from Novavax. Berset said mRNA vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer, as well as CureVac’s yet-to-be-approved shot form the backbone of Switzerland’s strategy for initial shots and future refresher jabs, seen as likely as the coronavirus mutates.

Berset said people should continue to stick to social distancing, mask wearing, and getting COVID-19 vaccines. About a quarter of the 8.6 million population has got jabs so far.

Global firms leave Myanmar office block with military ties

A number of tenants of a high-end office block in Myanmar that the United Nations said is built on military-owned land have moved out or are reviewing their leases, including McKinsey, Coca-Cola and Reuters, the companies said.

Activist group Justice for Myanmar last month called on commercial tenants of the Sule Square complex of offices and shops in the heart of Myanmar’s commercial hub of Yangon to stop indirectly supporting the army. “Sule Square has big-name tenants that continue to lease office space in the building, indirectly supporting the army,” Justice for Myanmar said in a report in which it identified 18 of the tenants.

Reuters approached all of the companies named in the report. Of the eight that said they had moved or were reviewing office plans, two cited the military link. Others cited various reasons including business prospects and staff safety. Business has collapsed in the Southeast Asian country since a Feb. 1 coup that prompted widespread protests and strikes, during which the army has killed hundreds of civilians and arrested thousands. Opened in 2017 near the historic Sule Pagoda, Sule Square was developed by a local affiliate of Hong Kong listed Shangri-La Asia, which also manages the building and an adjacent hotel. The site was leased from the military, according to a 2019 fact-finding mission established by the United Nations to investigate the army’s economic interests, media and human rights groups. As the basis for its conclusion that the land is owned by the military, the mission in its report cited what it called digital records. One of the authors of the report, human rights consultant Chris Sidoti, said the material had been archived and was not immediately available. On Tuesday, Reuters made a request to the United Nations to get access to the records. Shangri-La, which said in 2017 it had invested $125 million in the development, declined to comment on Reuters’ questions about land ownership.

A spokesman for Myanmar’s junta did not answer calls seeking comment. Reuters could not independently verify details of the land lease deal. Myanmar’s military, which directly ruled for almost 50 years after taking power in a 1962 coup, owns large tracts of land and controls conglomerates that span everything from mining to banking. McKinsey & Company terminated its lease of serviced office space in Sule Square in early 2021, said Melissa Yeo, director of reputation and communications, Southeast Asia, at the consultancy, without elaborating. In an emailed statement, Coca-Cola said it would not be renewing its lease when it ends in mid-June citing “changing business requirements”.

When contacted for comment, a spokesperson for Reuters, which was not one of the companies named in the report, said it is not currently using its Sule Square office and was reviewing its tenancy. The spokesperson did not comment on the building’s possible military ties.

Government warning to gas hoarders: Don't put gasoline in plastic bags

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a warning to people attempting to hoard gas amid the chaos prompted by the Colonial Pipeline cyberattack.

"Do not fill plastic bags with gasoline," the agency warned in a Twitter thread. "Use only containers approved for fuel." The CPSC says consumers should follow the gas canister manufacturer's instructions for storing and transporting gasoline. When filling a gas canister, individuals should never pour gasoline over or near an open flame. Doing so will lead to flame jetting, "a sudden and possibly violent flash fire," the agency wrote. "We know this sounds simple, but when people get desperate they stop thinking clearly. They take risks that can have deadly consequences," the CPSC concluded. "If you know someone who is thinking about bringing a container not meant for fuel to get gas, please let them know it's dangerous." Cars have lined up for hours at gas stations across the East Coast to fuel up, causing over 1,000 locations to report gasoline outages.

It’s unconscionable to not condemn these attacks on the week of Eid,” said the Minnesota Democrat.

White House Agrees To Removes China's Xiaomi From Pentagon Trade Blacklist

In what is being described as a "rare victory" for a Chinese technology giant entangled in a spat with the US government, it appears the Biden Administration has decided to end the persecution of Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi, which had been targeted by the Trump Administration, along with a host of other Chinese firms, most notably telecoms titan Huawei.

A Joint Status Report released late Tuesday showed the DoD and Xiaomi had agreed to resolve ongoing litigation "without further contest". Xiaomi had sued the US government after the Pentagon placed it on a government blacklist, accusing it of having close ties to the Chinese military, though the Biden administration now believes that vacating that designation "would be appropriate."

“The parties have agreed upon a path forward that would resolve this litigation without the need for contested briefing,” according to the filing. A comprehensive "joint proposal" is expected to be filed before May 20.

A Xiaomi spokeswoman said the company is watching the latest developments closely, without elaborating.

Xiaomi sued the government earlier this year after the Pentagon issued an order designating the firm as having ties to the PLA, Chinese military, which would have led eventually to the firm's forceful de-listing from US exchanges and its expulsion from global equity benchmark indexes. The settlement isn't exactly a surprise: An American judge granted Xiaomi an injunction back in March to prevent "irreparable" harm to the company's business on the expectation that the Trump Administration's move would likely be over turned (the ruling also cited the US government's "deeply flawed" process for including it in the ban, according to US District Judge Rudolph Contreras, who oversaw the case ).

Unsurprisingly, Xiaomi shares surged more than 6% on the news in Hong Kong markets on Wednesday.

But the deal is just another example of how the Biden Administration is trying to walk a tightrope between the Biden family's longstanding business ties to China (which we learned some new details about just the other day) and the antagonistic approach to waging economic war against China pioneered by President Trump, which has proven to be enduringly popular among the American people.

Founded by billionaire entrepreneur Lei Jun more than 10 years ago, Xiaomi was seen as a unlikely target for Trump's scrutiny (the firm enjoyed the financial backing of American chip giant Qualcomm in its early years).

‘Magic Fairy Dust’: Florida Restaurant Owner Says People Started Applying As Soon As Gov. DeSantis Nixed Unemployment Waivers For Job Search

A businessman who owns two restaurants – one in Florida and one in New York – said business is booming in the sunshine state after the state brought back the job search requirement for people receiving unemployment benefits while on Fox & Friends Wednesday morning.

“It’s just like that, magic fairy dust,” Buddy Foy Jr., owner of Chateau by the Lake, said. “Now you have to look for a job, the waiver is being removed for that search requirement for unemployment. And in the last 5 days, literally everyday it’s building to more and more.”

“We got zero phone calls in five months for jobs, we filled our jobs through referral, Steve, through our current employees. And in the last 5 days, our staff is saying ‘I can’t keep answering the phone, we have to serve customers’.”

Foy Jr., said business owners now get to “compete for labor” just as they had prior to the pandemic.

Meanwhile, business isn’t doing as well in New York, with Foy Jr., saying “business is tough” and that he’s “counting on referrals.”

“We will open New York Memorial Day Weekend and we will take reservations based on the supply of labor,” he said.

Foy Jr., recently moved to Florida, calling the move a “blessing” after New York forced him to shut down his business. Still, Foy Jr., says he understands why people don’t want to get a job when there’s no incentive.

“You make more money on your involvement at home, so I don’t blame them.”

Le Pen Denounces Migrant Taxi NGOs as Part of ‘Modern Slavery’

French populist leader Marine Le Pen denounced the activities of migrant taxi NGOs, linking them to people trafficking and modern slavery.

Le Pen made her statements on France’s national day of the abolition of the slave trade on Monday, criticising NGOs, which operate primarily in the Mediterranean Sea, for picking up migrants and transporting them to Europe.

“The trafficking of human beings organised by smugglers in the Mediterranean and encouraged under the guise of misguided humanism by NGOs funded by the European Union is part of this modern slavery,” Le Pen alleged in a statement released by her party, the National Rally.

“Slavery, as it was practised, was recognised as a crime against humanity. Its modern form and the resulting economic human trafficking is an abomination,” Le Pen said, adding that France should return to being a symbol to the world against tyranny, saying the country must fight against modern slavery.

“In particular, it requires breaking with ultraliberalism and globalism and putting the economy at the service of man, not the other way around,” she said.

Le Pen is not the first to accuse migrant taxi NGOs of being linked to people-traffickers, as such accusations have been levelled against so-called civil society groups for years.

In 2017, the Italian government released photographs that claimed to show people-smugglers directly working with a German NGO.

The following year, a former member of the security staff for a migrant taxi NGO claimed to have received death threats from far-left extremists after he had blown the whistle on activists allegedly co-operating with people-traffickers by alerting Italian authorities.

In July 2020, the German Joint Analysis and Strategy Centre for Illegal Migration (Gasim) levelled allegations of co-operation between the so-called charities and people-traffickers, saying that the criminals track the NGO vessels in the Mediterranean and send migrants to them.

The report also claimed that gangs had directly communicated with NGOs using a satellite phone in some cases.

Last week, Sea-Watch dropped off 454 migrants in Sicily, and SOS Mediterranee had delivered another 236 to the island just days before. Landings of illegal immigrants have soared in recent days.

BlackBerry Prevents DarkSide Ransomware — Years Before It Ever Existed

DarkSide is a newer ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) product that offers its malware for download on the dark web. Like many other RaaS vendors, DarkSide allows their customers to download malware and attack victims to extort money, exfiltrate files, and then share in the proceeds with the malware creators.

RaaS and other Malware as a Service (MaaS) vendors allow anyone to become a threat actor by offering the malware for download after signing up. This makes these services extremely dangerous for organizations around the world as traditional security companies are required to build defenses against hundreds if not thousands of different actors who attack with variants of the original malware.

Some RaaS services offer a very low barrier to entry, offering their malware for free in exchange for a share of the paid ransoms. Other RaaS vendors require some upfront payment to download the malware; but usually do not share in any profit from ransoms paid.

The FBI has been actively tracking DarkSide since it was first discovered in October 2020. The attack often occurs in two phases; after gaining access to the network, threat actors first exfiltrate as much data as they can before then encrypting the drives.

By exfiltrating the victim’s data, as with any good business model, the attackers then have multiple paths to revenue. They can threaten to release a victim’s sensitive data publicly and still control the victim’s computers, keeping them from being productive.
