Oil Extends Biggest Gain This Year as Powell Sparks Broad Rally
Oil extended its biggest one-day gain this year as investors embraced risk assets and industry estimates showed a draw in U.S. stockpiles.
West Texas Intermediate traded above $81 a barrel after rallying 3.8% on Tuesday. The industry-funded American Petroleum Institute reported that U.S. crude inventories sank by about 1 million barrels last week, according to people familiar with the figures. The snapshot also showed a drop in crude at the key storage hub in Cushing, although gasoline holdings jumped.
Crude’s rally on Tuesday to the highest close since Nov. 11 came alongside gains in raw materials and equities after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell sought to reassure investors the central bank can rein in inflation without damaging the U.S. economy. If he succeeds, that would safeguard oil demand.
Oil has roared higher in the opening days of the new year as concerns about the pandemic, especially the impact of the omicron variant, have eased off. At the same time, stockpiles have extended declines, suggesting a tighter market, and several OPEC+ producers have seen interruptions to supply.
“There are a lot of supply factors and omicron fears are ebbing,” said Howie Lee, an economist at Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp. in Singapore. “The market will remain tight for a while. Wherever the market is right now has just started to reflect oil’s fair value and there is still more to run.”
Official data on U.S. oil stockpiles follow later on Wednesday from the Energy Information Administration. Should they confirm a drop, it would be a seventh successive fall.

Biden Regime Launches New 'Domestic Terrorism Unit' To Confront 'Anti-Authority Ideologies'
While testifying before Congress on Tuesday morning, Deputy U.S. Attorney General Matt Olsen announced the formation of a new “domestic terrorism unit” that will “augment” the government’s existing approach.
Olsen — a former Obama NSA official — personally directed the formation of the task force, according to his statements before Congress.
“This group of dedicated attorneys will focus on the domestic terrorism threat, helping to ensure that these cases are handled properly and effectively, coordinated across the Department of Justice and across the country.”
“We’ve seen a growing threat from those who are motivated by racial animus, as well as those who ascribe to extremist anti-government and anti-authority ideologies,” Olsen said The deputy AG proudly announced that the federal government has arrested and prosecuted more than 700 Americans following the “attack” on the Capitol last January.
“The Department of Justice has undertaken an effort unprecedented in its scope and complexity, to hold accountable, all of those who engaged in criminal acts,” Olsen said in reference to the Capitol protests.
“We continue to methodically gather and review the evidence,” Olsen said.
He later said the country is facing an “elevated threat” from domestic extremists.
Olsen then praised the DOJ’s “Civil Rights Division”, saying the division has “led the prosecution of some of the most heinous attacks in recent years.”
“While there is no single federal crime that is labelled ‘domestic terrorism’, the criminal code does define domestic terrorism, and this definition does provide us with expanded authorities, including enhanced sentencing for terrorism offenses,” Olsen said.
He then said the department was bound by their “commitment to protecting civil liberties and our duty to ensure equal and impartial justice.”
“We prosecute individuals for engaging in violent behavior, not for their beliefs or associations,” Olsen said.
He then added that the government “would not hesitate” to prosecute those who fit the regime’s definition of domestic terrorists.

The 71-year-old defendant, Thomas Welnicki of Rockaway Beach, Queens, allegedly made the threats to Trump as well as a dozen unidentified members of Congress in several calls over the past year to Secret Service offices and other law enforcement, a criminal complaint says.
Welnicki also allegedly told the Secret Service that there was a $350,000 reward to kill Trump and the lawmakers and said he might travel to Georgia on the same day the then-president was due to be there, Jan. 4, 2021.
Trump was not identified by name in the complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Brooklyn. But a footnote in that document identifies Welnicki’s target as the person who served as president from January 2017 through January 2021.

Jennifer was last seen walking home from school. She was one block from her family's residence on 15th Street and 109th Avenue in Tampa, Florida on November 15, 1982 at approximately 3:00 p.m.
Authorities suspected that Thomas Peter Welnicki, a family friend of Jennifer with an extensive criminal history for charges ranging from theft to drug possession to minor assault, was involved in her case. A photograph of Welnicki is posted with this case summary.
When questioned by police, he claimed to have a psychic vision of Jennifer's abduction and murder. He said she was abducted and strangled by two men. One of them, he said, was in his forties and had a criminal history, and the other was a blond man in his mid-twenties whom Jennifer knew and trusted, and whose conscience troubled him deeply after the child's death. Welnicki himself matches the description of the blond man.
Authorities believe Welnicki's "vision" was actually a confession, but he denies this. He failed a polygraph about Jennifer's case, but this may have been because he was taking medication to prevent seizures. Welnicki he has never been charged in connection with Jennifer's case.
At the time of her disappearance, Jennifer was a second-grade student at Lassie C. Shaw Elementary School, which was one miles from her home. She was a good student and well-behaved. Her presumed abduction remains unsolved. Her mother self-published a book about it in 2011, titled "Jennifer, Where Are You?"
