The Liberal government has confirmed it has committed more than $3.3 billion in taxpayer funding to electric vehicle manufacturing projects in Canada, including tens of millions of dollars to companies that have since collapsed.

The disclosure appears in a written response to an Order Paper Question from Conservative MP Dalwinder Gill(Calgary McKnight).

According to the response from Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, $3.386 billion has been committed since 2016, with $1.41 billion already disbursed through federal programs such as the Strategic Innovation Fund.

Among the recipients is Lion Electric, which has since entered bankruptcy protection. Ottawa committed $50 million to the company and has already paid out nearly $32 million to support a battery assembly plant and “centre of expertise” in Quebec.

Other heavily subsidized firms include:

Stellantis – $529 million committed, $222 million disbursed

NextStar Energy (LG–Stellantis battery plant) – $500 million committed, $491 million disbursed

General Motors – $259 million committed, $242 million disbursed

Honda Canada – $132 million committed, $90 million disbursed

Ford – $295 million committed, $34 million disbursed

PowerCo (Volkswagen) – $700 million committed, $4.5 million disbursed

Umicore – $551 million committed, $57 million disbursed

Most of the funding went to projects in Ontario and Quebec for vehicle assembly, battery plants and critical-minerals processing.

The Order Paper response shows that many of the contributions are non-repayable, meaning taxpayers will not recover the money if the projects fail. Some agreements include job-creation requirements, while others contain repayment provisions that are not publicly disclosed.

Several projects list no public production capacity, despite receiving hundreds of millions of dollars in subsidies.

The government says the spending is meant to support Canada’s transition to electric vehicles and build a domestic battery supply chain. Critics say the disclosures confirm Ottawa is gambling billions of public dollars on politically favoured corporations — and in at least one case, backing a company that has already gone bust.

The Order Paper response provides the clearest accounting yet of Ottawa’s EV manufacturing subsidies, highlighting both the scale of public spending and the financial risk now borne by taxpayers.

The Liberal government has disclosed that Mark Carney’s travel has already cost taxpayers at least $770,000, according to responses to an Order Paper Question, while refusing to reveal the total cost of flights or security.

In a written response to Parliament, Global Affairs Canada reported that $470,000 was spent on hotel accommodations related to Carney’s travel. The department refused to disclose which hotels were used, claiming that doing so could jeopardize security.

The response did not explain how identifying hotels already stayed in would pose a security risk.

A separate response from the Department of National Defence shows an additional $300,000 was spent on in-flight catering, with officials noting that further costs are still being processed and have not yet been fully tallied.

The government declined to disclose the cost of flights themselves, as well as the expense of security details associated with Carney’s travel.

Taken together, the partial disclosures confirm that Carney’s travel has already generated well over three-quarters of a million dollars in expenses, with the final total expected to be significantly higher once outstanding charges are included.

The Order Paper Question posed by Conservative MP Phil Lawrence sought a full accounting of Carney’s travel costs, including transportation, accommodations, catering and security. Instead, the government provided only selected line items while withholding the most.

This is not the first time Carney’s taste for high-end travel has been charged to the public purse.

In 2018, while serving as Governor of the Bank of England, Carney defended what The Guardian described as a “staggering” expenses bill after it was revealed he had racked up more than £300,000 in travel costs over two years. At the time, British lawmakers questioned business-class flights and international travel tied to elite global financial forums, with Carney arguing the spending was justified by the Bank’s international role.

By withholding flight and security expenses, the government has made it impossible for Parliament to determine the true price tag of his international schedule.

What the Order Paper response makes clear is that Ottawa is willing to release some numbers, just not the ones needed to calculate the full bill.

So far, taxpayers are on the hook for at least $770,000. And the meter is still running.

A Conservative MP sounded the alarm that Liberals might be flip-flopping on a promise not to ban Elon Musk’s X social media platform after Canada’s Artificial Intelligence Minister said the government is now “investigating” it yet again.

Speaking to reporters last Friday, Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon told reporters that the “Privacy Commissioner has started an investigation into X.”

“And again, there was already an investigation before, but he’s added an investigation.”

Conservative MP Dean Allison warned in a post on X last Friday regarding Solomon’s X comments that the Liberal minister’s tone is “lingo” for his true intentions to ban the social media platform.

“A week ago, I said the Liberals will ban @X. They denied it,” he wrote.

“Now they’re back to ‘investigating it’ which is government lingo for ‘give us enough time for the story to die down, then we’ll ban it.’ Liberals censor speech. Conservatives support free speech. Simple as that, folks.”

Reports surfaced earlier this month that Australia and the United Kingdom were looking to ban X. Because of this, Canada’s federal government denied rumors that it would follow suit with a ban of its own of the popular platform.

Solomon himself said at the time, “Contrary to media reports, Canada is not considering a ban of X.”

Recent reports suggest that the UK government was putting together a consortium of nations that would band together and ban Musk’s X as a measure to challenge its AI tool known as Grok.

Claims have been made that Grok has been used to generate sexually explicit images of minors that have been posted on X. Musk himself has addressed the issue, noting, “Anyone using Grok to make illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they upload illegal content.”

The two countries issued a joint statement on Jan. 27 highlighting potential areas of cooperation. The statement says that Canada’s priority to diversify its energy exports, coupled with India being a top consumer of oil and gas, “offers a natural and symbiotic partnership grounded in scale, stability, and long-term opportunity.”

Hodgson and Indian Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri have agreed to deepen bilateral energy trade, with Canada supplying liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and crude oil. Meanwhile India, having the fourth largest refining capacity in the world, could supply refined oil products to Canada. The statement adds that Hodgson and his counterpart recognize the “importance of climate-related objectives.”

Hodgson, a former public utility executive, became energy minister after the April 2025 election and has since relayed elevated interest in Canadian energy during his travels abroad.

Canada’s fertility rate has reached an all-time low of 1.25 births per woman in 2024, with Statistics Canada saying this puts the country in “ultra-low fertility” territory.

The statistics agency said in a Jan. 26 report that this declining fertility is due to a decreased birth rate, as well as more women not having children “by choice, by circumstance or because they are delaying motherhood.”

Statistics Canada said the country’s fertility has been decreasing since 2009, although it fell by a smaller 1.6 percent in 2024 compared to a 5.3 percent decline in 2023 and 6.9 percent decline in 2022.

The agency said Canada entered the “ultra-low fertility” group of countries, which have Total Fertility Rates (TFRs) below 1.30, in 2023. Other countries in the category include Switzerland (1.29), Finland (1.25), Italy (1.18), Japan (1.15), and South Korea (0.75).

By contrast, the World Bank said that in 2023, the countries with the highest fertility were the African countries of Somalia, Chad, Niger, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which had TFRs of 6.1.

Statistics Canada said the average age of mothers at the birth of their first child has also been rising in Canada for decades, and in 2024 it reached an all-time high of 31.7 years. Continue...

The federal government is still sitting on 64 million expired pieces of personal protective equipment purchased during the COVID-19 pandemic — at a cost of more than $150 million, according to a newly released parliamentary response.

The disclosure came in an answer to an Order Paper Question from Conservative MP Dave Epp (Chatham-Kent—Leamington), tabled in the House of Commons on January 26.

The Public Health Agency of Canada confirmed the expired stock includes:

30.1 million gloves

19 million surgical masks

8.6 million gowns

3.8 million shoe covers

2.4 million face shields

98,000 N95 respirators

All of the expired PPE was originally bought between 2020 and 2022 at a total cost of approximately $150.7 million.

Ottawa is also spending millions to store this unusable equipment. Since 2022, the federal government has paid over $20 million in storage costs for PPE destined for recycling or disposal.

The largest share went to private contractor Metro Supply Chain, which received:

The government confirmed that most of the expired PPE is stored in warehouses in Ontario and Alberta.

The response also revealed which companies received contracts under the government’s failed 2019-20 standing offer for PPE, including Bio Nuclear Diagnostics, Cardinal Health Canada, Ferno Canada, and Medline Canada, with contract values ranging from tens of thousands to over $700,000.

While Ottawa insists it “actively divests” surplus equipment, it admits once PPE expires it has “no remaining value” and must be recycled or destroyed.

The federal government spent more than $30 million on vehicles for a two-day G7 summit in Alberta — and over 100 of those vehicles are now parked in storage, according to a parliamentary response released this week.

The figures were disclosed in an Order Paper Question from Conservative MP Blaine Calkins (Ponoka—Didsbury) about the G7 summit held in Kananaskis, Alberta, on June 16–17, 2025.

Public Safety Canada confirmed the RCMP purchased 315 vehicles and leased 648 more specifically for the summit.

The purchased fleet included Chevrolet Suburbans, light-armoured Suburbans, Ford Transit 350 mid-roof vans and Chrysler Pacificas. The government refused to list the makes and models of the leased vehicles, claiming it would take too long to compile the information.

The cost was steep:

$27,446,457 for purchased vehicles

$2,972,987.58 for leased vehicles

That’s more than $30.4 million in total for transportation at a summit that lasted just two days.

After the event, the RCMP admitted 113 of the newly purchased vehicles were put into storage instead of being deployed operationally. The vehicles are currently being kept at the RCMP Service Dog Training Facility in Innisfail, Alberta, along the Queen Elizabeth II Highway.

Polytechnique Montreal, the University of Montreal's engineering school, in an effort reduce its carbon footprint — has chosen to halt the sale of beef for students to purchase.

Reported by CityNews, Patrick Cigana, the director of Polytechnique’s office of sustainable development, claims beef used to account for more than half of the cafeteria's greenhouse gas emissions.

The food professor, Sylvain Charlebois, who runs an agri-food analytics lab at Dalhousie University, wrote on X the school's decision makes it the first university in North America to stop serving beef to students.

Cigana cited research from the University of Oxford platform, saying beef produces ten times the carbon emissions of chicken.

A commenter on Charlebois' post, Michael Penkiunas wrote, "Bold Move."

Charlebois then responded with another possible reason the school may have made the decision, writing, "You mean, convenient move."

A new bombshell report in Financial Times says that US officials have held recent talks with Canadian separatists seeking to break Alberta, Canada's oil-rich western province, away from Ottawa.

"Officials in the [US President] Donald Trump administration discussed loaning Alberta $500 million to break up Canada and make it the 51st state," one source told the FT.

This follows on the heels of Trump earlier this month posting a fictitious map showing Canada as part of the United States. The report also comes days after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's speech in Davos before the World Economic Forum (WEF). He called out President Trump for creating a "rupture" in the existing world order.

Carney has also told his parliament, "The world has changed. Washington has changed. There is almost nothing normal in the US now - that's the truth."

Trump famously fired back: "Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements" while adding that Carney "wasn't so grateful" and that Canada "gets a lot of freebies from us."

Recall too the words of US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent at Davos: "Alberta is a natural partner for the US. People are talking. People want sovereignty. They want what the US has got."

And now the FT article, along with other media, claim Trump is destabilizing Canada by these secret meetings between the Canadian separatists and "very, very senior" officials in the US administration.

Jeff Rath, legal adviser to the movement in question - the Alberta Prosperity Project (APP) - has gone so far as to proclaim that Washington is pushing for an "independent" Alberta.

APP leaders are now seeking follow-up meetings with the US State and Treasury Departments next month to request a $500 million credit facility to bankroll secession, while also pressing for US recognition and new pipeline routes that would bypass Canadian federal approval, according to the reports. They are said to be 'taking advantage' of the ongoing friction between the US and its northern neighbor.

Sources briefed on the discussions told the Financial Times that representatives from the province, where it turns out Carney himself was raised, have met with US State Department officials in Washington on no less than three separate occasions over the past nine months.

Per The Daily Beast, a State Department spokesperson has admitted that the meetings took place but suggested nothing has been agreed to, stressing that "no commitments were made."

That same report cites Carlo Dade from the Canada West Foundation, a Calgary think tank, who described: "The Americans are more than happy to continue to play Canadians off each other."

The British Home Secretary unveiled plans in Parliament on Jan. 26 for a new National Police Service (NPS), which is modeled on the FBI and will take over the fight against terrorism and organized crime in the United Kingdom.

At the weekend, Shabana Mahmood described the NPS as a “British FBI” and said it would alleviate the burden on local police forces, allowing them to concentrate on issues such as shoplifting and street robbery.

The NPS will replace the National Crime Agency, which covers England and Wales, but it will also have a UK-wide role.

On Monday, the Home Office published a 106-page White Paper that sets out in detail the new police structure and how it would be supported by state-of-the-art technology.

The document says the government would invest 115 million pounds ($157 million) over the next three years “to enable the rapid and responsible adoption of AI and automation technologies by the police.”

A new National Centre for AI in Policing, known as Police.AI, would be created.

There are also plans to roll out facial recognition cameras nationwide to help police catch wanted criminals on watchlists.

The number of facial recognition camera vehicles would be increased from 10 to 50.

“A hundred years ago, fingerprinting was decried as curtailing our civil liberties, but today we could not imagine policing without it,” Mahmood said.

Shortly before Davos, Canada and China announced a 5-point 'strategic partnership' which includes slashing tariffs on Chinese EVs from 100% to 6.1% for the first 49,000 units, in exchange for China cutting tariffs on Canadian canola from 85% to 15% until at least the end of the year.

After Donald Trump stomped his feet and threatened to slap a 100% tariff on Canadian exports, PM Mark Carney assured the US that the deal with China was simply 'rectifying' some 'issues' that developed over the last several years.

Yet, the reduced EV tariffs remain...

In response, General Motors CEO Mary Barra told employees at an all-hands meeting that the EV deal is a risk to North American auto manufacturing, WSJ reports.

"I can’t explain why the decision was made in Canada," Barra told employees, warning "It becomes a very slippery slope," and noting that Chinese automakers benefit in China from high tariffs imposed on importers, plus technology restrictions that prevent other companies from entering their market.

Under the agreement between China and Canada, at least half of the EVs imported would be required to have a price of $35,000 Canadian dollars (US$26,000), according to Carney's office. Canada will also work with Chinese automakers to ensure timely vehicle certifications, and that they meet the country's motor-vehicle safety standards.

Canada, meanwhile, is a major market for Detroit automakers. In 2025, Ford, GM and Jeep owner Stellantis sold over 700,000 vehicles combined in Canada. One factor which makes this easy is that Canada's emissions standards closely mirror those of the US.

That said, Canada's auto industry has been burnt, badly by Trump's tariffs on vehicles and parts made there, causing US automakers to scale back manufacturing as a result. Last year GM made the decision to stop making slow-selling electric vans at an Ingersoll, Ontario factory, while Stellantis has canceled plans to build the electric Jeep Compass in Ontario - and will instead make them in Illinois.

Chinese automakers, meanwhile, have been rapidly gaining global market share in recent years, but continue to be effectively barred from entering the massive US car market due to triple-digit tariffs on Chinese vehicle imports. Meanwhile, they're making roughly 25% of new Chinese cars in Mexico.

The federal government has spent more than $5.3 million on an advertising campaign designed to “transform Canadian patriotism,” according to a new parliamentary disclosure.

The figures were revealed in a response to an Order Paper Question from Conservative MP Tim Uppal (Edmonton Gateway), answered January 26.

The Privy Council Office confirmed it allocated $5.55 million and spent $5,349,488.75 on advertising campaigns since 2022, all routed through the Prime Minister’s Office.

Two major ad blitzes carried the same stated goal:

“Transform Canadian patriotism from passive to active and embed the idea of ‘choosing Canada’ into everything we do as a nation. Buy, support, embrace and explore all things Canada.”

The company that promoted insect protein as a climate-friendly food alternative has reportedly only paid back $15 million from a $40 million loan provided by Farm Credit Canada.

Farm Credit Canada has recovered only $15 million of the more than $40 million it loaned to Aspire Food Group, the company behind the government-backed “crickets for food” scheme, and it refuses to say how much taxpayers have actually lost.

The figures were revealed in a response to an Order Paper Question from Conservative MP John Barlow(Foothills), answered January 26.

According to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Farm Credit Canada advanced $36.5 million in 2022 and another $4.19 million in 2024 to Aspire Food Group, a company that promoted insect protein as a climate-friendly food alternative.

As of 2025, Aspire had repaid only $15 million.

The government also confirmed Aspire defaulted on its loan obligations.

“Certain events of default occurred,” the response states. On January 24, 2024, Farm Credit Canada issued a demand letter and moved to enforce its security under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act. The loans were not repaid, and in May 2025, Aspire was placed into receivership under FTI Consulting.

Aspire’s assets were later sold to Halali Group Holdings, with the Ontario Superior Court approving the transaction in October 2025. Following that sale, Farm Credit Canada received an interim distribution of $15 million from the proceeds.

But when asked how much of the remaining balance was written off or forgiven, Farm Credit Canada refused to answer.

“Farm Credit Canada is not in a position to disclose the details of specific loan losses, write-offs, or loan forgiveness for Aspire or any other borrower,” the agency said, calling the information “commercially sensitive.”

Ottawa can say how much it handed out. It can say how little came back. But it won’t say how big the hole is.

The federal government has admitted it knew Algoma Steel was planning layoffs in Sault Ste. Marie months before approving a $400 million taxpayer-backed loan, according to a new parliamentary disclosure.

The admission came in response to an order paper question from Conservative MP Jim Bélanger (Sudbury East—Manitoulin—Nickel Belt), answered January 26.

Finance Canada confirmed that Algoma first told the federal government in June 2025 that layoffs were a possible part of its business plan as it transitioned to a “sustainable long-term” model.

Despite that warning, Ottawa moved ahead with massive financial support.

The government agreed in principle to provide Algoma with a $400 million loan on September 29, 2025, under the Large Enterprise Tariff Loan facility. The deal was finalized on November 17, 2025. The Ontario government simultaneously committed another $100 million, bringing the total public loan package to $500 million.

Just days later, on November 30, 2025, Algoma formally informed the Canada Enterprise Emergency Funding Corporation that it would proceed with layoffs.

Bélanger also asked whether the federal government secured any job guarantees in exchange for the loan. Ottawa refused to say.

“The specifics of agreements… are subject to commercial confidentiality,” the Department of Finance said, declining to disclose whether workers’ jobs were protected as a condition of the bailout.

The disclosure undermines earlier claims that the loan was meant to protect jobs in Northern Ontario and raises new questions about why taxpayers were put on the hook for hundreds of millions of dollars without clear employment guarantees.

In another case of euthanasia via Canada's Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) program, a man in his 60s with a disability was euthanized despite his main source of suffering being loneliness.

Referred to as Mr. B in a 2025 report by the Ontario MAiD Death Review Committee (OMDRC), he was living with cerebral palsy, a condition that affects an individual's ability to move, and is usually caused by damage to the developing brain before birth.

This meant Mr. B was wheelchair-bound — but could independently control his wheelchair, transfer himself, and use the bathroom independently.

He lived in a long-term care facility (LTCF) due to his advanced care needs and had been living there for many years.

His life, partly due to his disability, was characterized by much isolation.

Mr. B expressed this "profound psychosocial suffering and loneliness" which he attributed to a lack of relationships and community.

This is an experience he claimed to have had his entire life.

His living conditions did not help.

His time in an LTCF only further exacerbated his loneliness and feelings of a "lack of belongingness."

His life seemed empty — and due to his profound suffering, six to eight weeks prior to Mr. B requesting MAiD, he decided to stop eating and drinking. Continue...

Ontario resident Margaret Marsilla says her 26-year-old son Kiano Vafaeian was given medical assistance in dying (MAID) in B.C. even though he didn’t suffer from a terminal or unbearably painful medical condition and was denied euthanasia in Ontario.

MAID currently permits doctor-assisted suicide for people with terminal illnesses or other incurable medical conditions. Under Track 2, eligibility also extends to individuals with chronic illness or disability who are experiencing “unbearable physical or mental suffering” but whose death is not “reasonably foreseeable.” An expansion to allow MAID for those whose sole underlying condition is mental illness is currently paused until 2027.

“I strongly feel that if he wasn’t approved for MAID, he would have still been around,” Marsilla said, adding that her son was an intelligent and kind young man whose loss is deeply felt by his whole family.

Marsilla, who took part in the press conference with Joseph Caprara, her husband and Vafaeian’s step-father, said they remained very close to Vafaeian into adulthood, providing financial, housing, and medical support and helping him try to stabilize his life as he faced physical and mental health challenges.

Marsilla noted that her son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in early childhood and later went on to lose sight in one eye and diminished sight in the other eye.

She said Vafaeian later went on to become addicted to cannabis, psilocybin, and other drugs in an attempt to treat his discomfort and mental illness. After being repeatedly turned down for MAID in Ontario between 2022 and 2024, he was given a link in an email from Health Canada to find other provinces where he could seek it, she added. Hanwha says it signed a memorandum of understanding with Algoma that pledges $275 million in financial support to stand up a new structural steel beam mill in Canada.

The pact also declares Hanwha’s intention to purchase steel products for both the construction of Canada’s new submarine fleet and the maintenance infrastructure to support it.

Both commitments come on the condition that Hanwha wins Ottawa’s massive, multi-billion-dollar procurement contract to supply the Royal Canadian Navy with up to 12 modern submarines.

Hanwha also signed co-operation agreements on Monday with Telesat, MDA Space, Cohere and PV Labs, all while a South Korean delegation of government and business officials visited Toronto.

Industry Minister Mélanie Joly and her Korean counterpart, Minister Jung-Kwan Kim, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) earlier this week aimed at strengthening Canada and Korea’s “comprehensive strategic partnership,” which launched in 2022, Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada said in a Jan. 29 news release.

Ottawa says the non-binding MOU was signed to facilitate cooperation between Canada and Seoul on bringing Korean automotive manufacturing to the country and expanding domestic electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing opportunities. It also covers collaboration on critical minerals and artificial intelligence.

The MOU also intends to attract investments in Canada’s battery production, battery-materials processing, and “the refinement, processing and recycling of Canadian critical minerals.”

“This agreement will grow our auto sector, create good jobs and reinforce Canada’s position as a global leader in future‑ready vehicle manufacturing,” Joly said in a Jan. 29 statement.

She told reporters on Jan. 27 that Canada is “happy to have the Koreans in town,” noting that the agreement follows her trip to Korea in November 2025, where she engaged with senior government officials and industry representatives.

The federal government says it has signed a proposed financial settlement with former students of a Saskatchewan residential school that could see each student receive up to $15,000.

The agreement follows a long-running class action lawsuit and could see Ottawa pay out more than $27 million to former students. The Île-à-la-Crosse School operated from the 1860s until the 1970s and had approximately 1,500 students; predominantly Métis children from across northern Saskatchewan.

The agreement is separate from one made by the provincial government. Premier Scott Moe said in September 2025 the province had reached an agreement in principle to pay $40.2 million in restitution to former students of Île-à-la-Crosse.

Under terms of the settlement with the federal government, those who attended the school for less than five years could receive up to $10,000, while those who attended for five years or more could receive up to $15,000, according to a Jan. 30 news release. The class action is open to students who attended only during the day and those who boarded at the facility.

The federal government said an independent party would be appointed by the court to administer the funds and determine the compensation for each former student.

The World Health Organization (W.H.O.) on Friday said the “risk of further spread of infection” from the small outbreak of the deadly Nipah virus in India is “low.”

“There is no evidence yet of increased human to human transmission,” the organization said in an email to Reuters.

W.H.O. said it did not recommend travel or trade restrictions based on the outbreak, which so far has affected only two known patients in West Bengal, India. Indian health officials traced 196 people who came into contact with these patients and placed them under observation. As of Friday, none of them has been listed as infected.

Nipah is a virus spread by bodily fluids, usually from infected animals like bats to humans. It presents with common flu-like symptoms but is extraordinarily dangerous, because it causes swelling in the brain and spinal cord. The bill creates new offences (Criminal Code Section 264.01), which are deeply concerning for normal, loving family interactions, based on a “pattern of coercive or controlling conduct,” even when no violence, threats, or illegal acts occur.

It criminalizes a pattern of otherwise lawful and often common behaviour that may later be perceived as threatening by an intimate partner.

That means ordinary family interactions could be re-interpreted as criminal after the fact.

Examples include:

– Asking a spouse where they are after they said they’d be home

-Expressing concern about excessive drinking

-Disagreeing about finances or spending

-Asking a partner not to give children junk food

– Raising concerns about time away from family

– Setting household boundaries or expectations

These are not crimes. They are part of marriage, parenting, and shared responsibility.

This does not diminish the seriousness of coercive control in genuinely abusive relationships. But criminal law should target clear abuse and violence, which are already addressed in law.

Bill C-16, as written, opens the door to police intervention in the homes of ordinary families.

Senior Trump administration officials have reportedly met several times with Canadian separatist leaders seeking independence for Alberta, according to a new report, as relations between Washington and Ottawa remain strained.

The Financial Times reported that US officials met in Washington with representatives of the Alberta Prosperity Project, a group advocating independence for the oil-rich Canadian province, on three occasions since last spring. The meetings reportedly took place as political and trade tensions between the two countries have escalated.

Jeff Rath, legal counsel for the group, told the outlet after attending meetings that, “The US is extremely enthusiastic about a free and independent Alberta.” He also claimed officials attending the sessions were high-ranking, saying, “We’re meeting very, very senior people leaving our meetings to go directly to the Oval Office.”

The Federal Court of Appeal has ruled that Ottawa’s ban on the import and manufacture of single-use plastic items is reasonable, overturning a lower court decision three years ago.

The unanimous Jan. 30 decision by the three-judge panel found the federal government was reasonable in designating single-use plastic items as toxic and will allow the ban on their production or import.

The manufacturing and import ban was put in place in December 2022 under former Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault and includes single-use plastic items such as grocery bags, stir sticks, plastic straws, disposable polystyrene food containers, and plastic cutlery and dishes, with items like six-pack drink rings being phased out by 2024.

A Federal Court decision in 2023 found that Ottawa had overstepped its authority with the ban in a manner that was “unreasonable and unconstitutional.” The federal government first announced the ban as part of a plan to achieve “zero plastic waste” by 2030. The government said it chose the listed items because they were among the most commonly found as litter and had known and accessible alternatives.

The Jan. 30 appeal decision means the ban will continue and prohibit the manufacture of the six categories of single-use plastic items in Canada.

Ottawa proposed in December to ease its rules on single-use plastics to allow them to be manufactured and sold in Canada for export, saying the environmental benefits of keeping the full ban in place are outweighed by the economic disadvantages. Continue...

The Canada Revenue Agency fired more than 100 employees last year, including 25 for misconduct and 78 for fraudulently applying for and receiving the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) during the COVID-19 pandemic, a new CRA report says.

The agency recorded 370 cases of misconduct in the 2024-2025 fiscal year, 266 of which led to disciplinary measures including suspensions, oral or written reprimands, financial penalties, demotion, and terminations, according to the CRA’s second “Annual Report on Employee Misconduct and Wrongdoing,” released on Jan. 28.

Of the misconduct cases, 25 employees were terminated, while more than 150 employees faced suspensions ranging from one to 30 days.

An additional 78 employees were terminated after they “inappropriately” claimed the CERB benefit, which provided financial support to Canadians whose jobs were “directly” affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the report said. Continue...

“The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Halmagean’s death by the Latvian military police, with support from the Canadian Forces military police, is ongoing,” DND said in a statement released Friday night. “At this time, there is no indication this incident poses an increased threat to the safety and security of our deployed members.”

Ottawa spent at least $839 million on direct cash payments to Ukraine war refugees arriving in Canada, according to federal records that detail the scale of benefits provided under emergency immigration measures.

Blacklock's Reporter says an inquiry of ministry response from the Department of Immigration says 296,779 Ukrainians received one-time cash grants after landing in Canada, with adults paid $3,000 and minor children $1,500 to help cover basic needs such as food, housing, clothing, furniture, and other immediate expenses.

The cash payments were only part of the overall cost.

Federal documents show an additional $102.5 million was spent on free hotels and temporary accommodations, $87.9 million on settlement services, and $16.8 million to administer the Canada-Ukraine Transition Assistance Initiative.

Total spending under the program reached approximately $1.14 billion.

The figures were tabled in the House of Commons in response to a written question from Conservative MP Kerry Diotte (Edmonton Griesbach), who asked for a detailed breakdown of the roughly $20 billion Ottawa has committed to Ukraine-related initiatives since 2022.

Under the emergency program, Ukrainian refugees were offered free flights to Canada, up to 14 nights of free accommodation, language training, orientation services to help families enroll children in school, and free work and study permits.

More than one million Ukrainians applied to settle in Canada before the program expired in 2024, with about 990,000 applications approved.

Internal government documents released previously acknowledged concerns about preferential treatment.

A 2024 internal report, Rapid Evaluation Of The Ukraine Response, said there was a “perception of unfairness” compared with Canada’s response to other humanitarian crises.

It noted criticism that the program was seen as a privileged initiative for a mostly white population, particularly when compared to the treatment of Afghan allies following the fall of Kabul.

The report also revealed Ukrainians were granted exemptions from standard security screening requirements.

Due to overwhelming demand, mandatory fingerprinting and other biometric checks were waived for children under 17, adults over 61, and Ukrainians who had previously held a Canadian visitor visa within the past 10 years.

In addition, Ukrainians were exempted from declaring when they intended to leave Canada, a departure from standard immigration rules.

The department warned these measures could have long-term consequences.

“This may set precedents for future crisis responses,” the report said.

A Toronto man has pleaded guilty to online sexual exploitation of more than 100 girls in the United States, according to the U.S. Justice Department.

The man, 40-year-old, Ramanan Pathmanathan, admitted to creating a fake online persona and targeting the children through social media, according to justice officials.

Pathmanathan previously pleaded guilty to similar crimes in Canada in 2022 and was given a 12-year jail sentence.

He was arrested by U.S. law enforcement on Dec. 3, 2025 after the U.S. officials secured a “temporary surrender” of Pathmanathan from Canada, according to a Jan. 30 Justice Department news release. Following his arrest in the U.S., Pathmanathan remained incarcerated while awaiting trial.

Under Canada’s Extradition Act, someone in custody in Canada can be surrendered for trial in another country. Continue...

A Democratic member of Congress who was caught texting Jeffrey Epstein during a House hearing has had even more connections to Epstein exposed in the latest Epstein files document dump.

According to a series of 2014 emails, which came several years after Epstein’s Florida conviction on sex crimes, Democratic Delegate from the U.S. Virgin Islands Stacey Plaskett arranged to visit Epstein’s island, according to political news outlet NOTUS.

“Will you be able to meet with Jeffrey on his island on Monday Aug. 18th at 11 am?” an Epstein assistant asked Plaskett.

Plaskett was noted in the files touching base with Epstein again in 2017.

Epstein assistant Lesley Groff scheduled a “phone date” between Epstein and Plaskett.

In 2016, Groff wrote Plaskett that “Jeffrey has tried for you a few times on your cell but has been unsuccessful” and urged her to call him.

“Thanks. Spoke with him,” Plaskett responded five minutes later.

The newly released files showed Plaskett contacting Epstein to secure campaign donations in 2017 and 2018.

In September 2018, Plaskett texted Epstein, writing, “I know you’re tremendously busy. Thanks so much for taking time and sharing ideas and thoughts. I appreciate your support and hope I’m not presumptuous to consider you a friend,” according to the New York Post.

Location: about 16 nautical miles north of Oman, within the inbound traffic separation scheme

Incident: a merchant vessel was hailed on VHF by multiple small armed boats

Response: the vessel ignored requests to stop and continued on its planned route

Maritime-security firm Vanguard Tech said in a message to clients that six Iranian gunboats armed with 50-caliber guns approached the tanker as it entered the strategic waterway and ordered it to kill the engines and prepare to be boarded. Instead, the vessel sped up and was later escorted by a U.S. warship.

U.S. officials confirmed armed Iranian boats tried to stop a U.S.-flagged ship and that it was escorted to safety.

The incident occurred at the critical maritime chokepoint where 20% of oil trade and a large share of LNG flows pass daily.

Health Canada has locked away internal reports on vaccine and drug injuries for up to 15 years, citing the sheer scale of the records involved, according to documents tabled in Parliament.

The disclosure emerged in an Inquiry of Ministry response detailing unusually long delays under the Access To Information Act.

Health Canada confirmed its longest current extension is 15 years, covering a request for vaccine and adverse drug reaction reports dating back to 1998.

Officials said the request originally involved several million pages of records. It has since been narrowed in scope and is now being processed, but the extended delay remains one of the longest on record within the federal government.

The Public Health Agency of Canada also acknowledged lengthy delays tied to pandemic-era records, with one request extended by more than five years.

The Bank of Montreal was fined $4 million after “erroneous charges” for monthly plan fees affected more than 100,000 customers, the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada says.

Citing violations of consumer provisions in the Bank Act, the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) said in a Feb. 2 news release that the bank failed to properly disclose details about monthly plan fees that “should have been waived or discounted for certain personal deposit accounts.”

BMO did not disclose all charges applicable to certain personal deposit accounts from 2010 to 2024, and also failed to “clearly disclose” information about when monthly plan fees would begin between 2022 and 2024, FCAC said.

The agency noted that a total of 101,091 customers were financially impacted by the violations. BMO has issued more than $3 million in refunds and redressed interest to impacted customers. Prime Minister Mark Carney says he will abolish the electric vehicle mandate while replacing it with emissions regulations that he says will achieve a similar objective of reaching widespread EV adoption by consumers.

Carney announced on Feb. 5 that Ottawa will repeal the electric vehicle mandate that would have required automakers to produce and sell only electric vehicles by 2035. Instead, Carney said the government will put in place tougher greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions standards for model years 2027 to 2032. The revised aim is to reach an EV adoption rate of 75 percent by 2035 and 90 percent by 2040.

“The more stringent emission standards will enable the government of Canada to repeal the electric vehicle accessibility standard,” Carney said in Vaughan, Ont., on Feb. 5.

Consumer incentives for EV purchases will also be returning. The government will introduce a five-year, $2.3 billion EV Affordability Program offering purchase incentives of up to $5,000 for battery electric and fuel-cell vehicles and up to $2,500 for plug-in hybrids. The two companies announced plans on Feb. 6 for Stellantis to sell its 49 percent stake in NextStar Energy, the multi-billion dollar project first announced in 2022. The transaction is to be completed for the nominal amount of $100.

The parties said the transaction reflects a “mutually agreed, strategic decision” that will help NextStar reach new customers in the field of energy storage systems. Meanwhile, Stellantis said it would remain a customer of battery products manufactured at the Windsor plant.

“By enabling LG Energy Solution to fully leverage the Windsor facility’s capacity, we are strengthening its long-term viability while securing the battery supply for our electric vehicles,” said Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa in a statement.

Stellantis and LG said over $5 billion have been invested in the facility so far, which employs over 1,300 people with a long-term target of 2,500 workers. NextStar had announced the start of mass production of lithium-ion battery cells in November 2025.

Saskatchewan’s Court of Appeal has rejected an attempt by the City of Prince Albert to revoke the property tax exemption status of a local church, ruling that hosting a bake sale doesn’t classify the church as a commercial entity.

The court rejected the theory that a church hosting a sale or fundraiser would jeopardize its tax-exempt status in the Feb. 3 ruling, saying it is the primary use of the property that dictates its status.

The dispute started in 2023 when a city assessor determined that the exemption status of Embassy Church in Prince Albert’s downtown core was largely invalid, according to the ruling.

The church’s main building is used for several different purposes, the court decision notes. It serves as a church but it also houses a registered independent school, and a day care facility. It includes space that is leased to third parties, and areas that can be rented on a one-time basis by members of the public for social or business functions. It also contains a second stand-alone building with a convenience store.

The assessor determined the school portion of the property was exempt, but the remainder was not, a decision the court described as “a dramatic change from the way the property had been dealt with in the past.”

Embassy Church agreed that the portion of the property that includes the stand-alone convenience store and the space rented to third parties on a long-term basis should be subject to taxation, but contested the taxation of the remainder of the space, the ruling said. Continue...

Igor Makarov has waged two unsuccessful Canadian court battles in an attempt to be removed from the sanctions list aimed at punishing those associated with Russia’s war on Ukraine. The oil and gas magnate recently filed a request for arbitration with the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), which bills itself as an autonomous international institution affiliated with the World Bank. In it, Makarov argues that because he’s now a citizen of Moldova, as well as Cyprus where he lives, Canada violated its treaty with the former by freezing his Canadian assets.

Conservative Toronto candidate Joe Tay, a podcaster from Hong Kong, and his supporters faced threats linked to China’s Communist government last year.

Monitors for Canada’s federal electoral process have confirmed that a Conservative candidate from the 2025 election had to get private security because of threats made against him by agents of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) during the campaign.

Conservative candidate Joe Tay, noted by Blacklock’s Reporter, was the target of CCP agents.

Nathalie Drouin, who serves as the national security advisor to the prime minister, said during testimony at a recent House affairs committee meeting, “I am not saying there was no attempt to undermine our democratic exercise.”

“We saw attempts, but we believe the overall result was fair and sound for Canadians,” she added.

Drouin noted, “We offered private security to the candidate, a program that was also available to all MPs facing threats.”

Tay is a podcaster from Toronto and came in second place in the election, losing out to his Liberal rival.

In April of 2025, as reported by LifeSiteNews, Tay stopped his campaign due to threats linked to China’s Communist Chinese Party government.

Tay is from Hong Kong and is a pro-democracy activist. The targets against him included mock “wanted” posters, along with negative online commentary, as well as a campaign to tarnish his name on Chinese-language social media platforms.

During testimony, Tay said that, during his nomination, a venue owner who had hosted a birthday party to which he was invited was summoned twice by the Chinese Consulate for “allowing me on the premises.”

“Volunteers and I were followed, photographed and had our homes monitored by strange vehicles that were reported to local police and the RCMP,” said Tay.

Some Chinese seniors had threats from foreign agents to discourage them from voting for Tay, which read, “If you vote for Joe Tay, the Chinese Consulate will know and you will lose your visa to visit China.”

“I’m not here as a foreign policy expert, nor an expert on China,” Anandasangaree responded.

Cooper said that Beijing “is not a rule of law state. They don’t have an independent judiciary, they don’t have civilian oversight of law enforcement, they don’t respect human rights, they’re actively perpetrating genocide, among other crimes against humanity.”

He added that the fact that Anandasangaree wouldn’t answer no to his questions shows that the government is “prepared to downplay and whitewash the serious interference of human rights abuses, among other outrageous conduct by a brutal dictatorship, all in the name of this new strategic partnership with that brutal dictatorship.”

The Daily Mail on Sunday obtained a federal statement from then-Manhattan US Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman announcing Jeffrey Epstein’s death on Friday, August 9, 2019, ostensibly from suicide.

While at first glance this looks meaningless, there is actually a huge problem. Epstein did not actually die until A DAY LATER.
