Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky has issued an apparent military threat to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban over the ongoing refusal by Budapest to lift a veto on billions in loans underwritten by EU members for Kiev.

Orban last month blocked a planned €90 billion ($106 billion) emergency loan raised by EU members for Kiev – following the bloc's failure to agree on outright stealing billions in Russian assets frozen in Belgium. Orban took the step in response to Ukraine preventing key Russian oil supplies from reaching Hungary via the Druzhba pipeline.

Speaking on new weapons for Kiev’s armed forces on Thursday, Zelensky stated: “We hope that one person in the EU will not block the €90 billion… Otherwise, we will give the address of this person to our armed forces, to our guys, so that they call him and communicate with him in their own language.” Continue...

Lawyers from The Democracy Fund will be representing prominent Toronto artist David Wall after he was wrongfully ejected from a courtroom while sketching.

The Democracy Fund (TDF) is now representing veteran Toronto courtroom sketch artist David Wall following his removal from a public court session while attempting to document proceedings through sketches.

Wall has chronicled major Canadian trials for more than 24 years, including the Via Rail terrorism case, a G20 police disciplinary hearing, and the deportation proceedings of Ernst Zundel.

Several recent concerning incidents have impeded Wall's work. In April 2025, while Wall was sketching in court, a security officer approached him and told him to leave. Despite a judge intervening and allowing him to remain, the officer still wrongfully forbade Wall from sketching him.

Wall was again told to exit the courtroom during an incident in November 2025, during which a court security officer told him to "pack up and go" because it was after 5pm and only lawyers could stay. A separate officer reportedly told Wall that things could "get physical" if he didn't leave. Only through a judge's intervention was Wall allowed to remain.

The incidents culminated in December of 2025, when Wall was forced out of the courtroom after a security officer told him he “had no business here and was not family or a witness in the case." There was no judge intervention this time, and he was forced to leave the courtroom.

Lawyers for TDF have written to the Ministry of the Attorney General for Ontario to demand an explanation for Wall's removal and to get "assurances that David will be allowed to sketch in open court." Continue...

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said he cannot “categorially rule out” military involvement in the war with Iran after the US and Israel launched an attack over the weekend. He emphasized that Canada may have to protect its citizens and allies if the fighting expands further.

Ottawa is arranging charter flights and reserving hundreds of seats on commercial airlines to help more than 2,000 Canadians who are seeking to leave the Middle East amid the Iran war.

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand said during an evening press conference on March 4 that more than 106,000 Canadians and permanent residents in the Middle East have registered with the Registration of Canadians Abroad service amid a conflict triggered by U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran on Feb. 28.

The registered Canadians are spread across more than a dozen countries, but 85 percent of those seeking assistance are concentrated in five: 1,171 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), 237 in Qatar, 164 in Lebanon, 93 in Israel, and 74 in Iran. In total, 2,035 people have asked the government for help leaving the region.

Anand said the options available for Canadians wishing to leave the Middle East depend on a range of factors, and urged Canadians in the region who have not yet registered to do so immediately.

“The situation is volatile and is changing by the hour,” she said. “In some countries, the airspace is open, in others it is partially open, and in others it’s fully closed.”

A statement from the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said U.S. and Canadian officials detected and tracked two Russian Tu-142 military planes earlier on Wednesday, an incident that NORAD described as routine.

“The Russian aircraft remained in international airspace and did not enter American or Canadian sovereign airspace,” NORAD said. “This Russian activity in the Alaskan and Canadian ADIZ occurs regularly and is not seen as a threat.”

Two U.S. Air Force F-35 fighter planes, two F-22 fighters, four KC-135 tanker planes, and one E-3 airborne warning and control aircraft were mobilized, while Canada sent two CF-18 fighter aircraft and one CC-150 tanker plane to monitor, identify, and intercept the two Russian planes in the identification zones.

The Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone, or ADIZ, is intended to serve as a buffer to warn of potential incursions by foreign aircraft. It extends hundreds of miles into the Bering Sea and the Arctic Ocean.

The Mersey River Wind Farm got a big shot in the arm last week during an announcement in Hunts Point by federal Minister of Energy and Natural Resource Tim Hodgson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Gregor Robertson, Canada Infrastructure Bank CEO Ehren Cory and Premier Tim Houston.

The project will get a $206-million loan from the Canada Infrastructure Bank, $25 million from Natural Resources Canada and a federal Clean Technology Tax Credit worth up to $122.5 million.

The Canada Infrastructure Bank, a Crown corporation, refused to provide the interest rate or terms of its loan.

In a written statement, Natural Resources Canada said its $25 million is “a conditionally repayable contribution agreement where funding would be repayable based on profits generated from the project within the first five years of operation.“

German media were still singing his praises in 2016. The man from Eritrea had landed a job as an electrical assistant at a firm in Rheinbach, in North Rhine-Westphalia, and gave interviews about leaving his homeland three years earlier to escape political persecution.

He wanted German citizenship, he said. His boss at the time was quick to describe Asmerom G. as talented, reliable, and “capable of anything,” according to Bild newspaper.

However, then reality arrived. Within a year, Asmerom G. was in trouble with the law. A brawl led to a conviction for grievous bodily harm at Siegburg District Court, earning him a six-month suspended sentence.

He moved on from Rheinbach and took up work behind the wheel of a freight truck.

Somewhere along the way, he made a trip back to his home country — for reasons that remain unclear — and returned to Germany with a woman named Weghata A., who was 31, his wife under Eritrean law.

On July 26, 2025, she delivered their daughter.

Three months later, Weghata A. was dead.

Canada’s Senate calls itself the chamber of “sober second thought,” but new expense records show taxpayers are footing the bill for booze, fine dining and even disco parties.

Expenses reviewed by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation show senators charged taxpayers $116,100 in hospitality spending last year, a 67% increase compared to the previous year.

“It’s probably hard for senators to provide that sober second thought when they’re spending thousands on booze,” said Franco Terrazzano, federal director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. “Taxpayers are going to be outraged when they see how unelected senators are milking their expenses.”

Since 2019, Senate spending includes $27,000 on alcohol purchased from the LCBO, SAQ, wineries and The Beer Store. Senators also spent thousands on gifts, including $1,600 at a Newfoundland distillery.

A First Nation on Vancouver Island has given longtime residents of a trailer park on its reserve lands two years to get out so the First Nation can create housing for its own members.

The K’ómoks First Nation announced on Wednesday that the Queneesh Trailer Park will be closing on January 31, 2028, "to begin to make way for much-needed housing and services for Nation members."

Longtime residents of the trailer park, on which 27 trailers are located housing over 100 people, told CHEK News that the First Nation is treating them unfairly, and they have limited options to relocate their homes due to costs and limited space on the island.

Kathy Jenkins, a park resident of 34 years, said, "There’s no place to move our trailers to on the Island. We are stuck. We have put our life savings into this trailer, and now we have to leave with nothing."

The 24-year-old Montreal native was wanted by Toronto police on a first-degree murder charge linked to the death of 28-year-old Kashif Jamal Bentley-Jean, who was shot in the parking lot of the shopping centre last July.

Officers responding to the Yorkdale mall shooting found the victim suffering from gunshot wounds outside the Indigo book store in the shopping centre’s parking lot during the early morning hours of July 17, 2025. He was pronounced dead at the scene despite attempts to save his life, Toronto police said in a March 5 press release.

Fuentes Gramajo was placed atop Canada’s Most Wanted List last year, and a reward of up to $100,000 was offered by Toronto police for any information leading to his arrest. Police have not released the details that led to the suspected gang member’s arrest or if the reward will be paid out.

There is already talk among Quebec’s political class — across the political spectrum — of invoking the notwithstanding clause after Canada’s top court struck down a law that barred people seeking refuge from Quebec’s daycare system.

The Supreme Court of Canada ruled on Friday the province’s policy — which excluded asylum seekers from the province’s subsidized daycare network — discriminated against women. The decision means people seeking refugee status can continue to access the system. It also extended eligibility to those without work permits.

Quebec’s low-cost daycare system, which emerged in the late 1990s, is widely regarded as one of the most successful child-care programs in the world, credited with helping more mothers enter the workforce. Even New York City’s newly elected mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has pointed to Quebec’s system as a model.

But the program faces a shortage of spaces. About 30,000 children remain on waiting lists for daycare spots, according to provincial figures. About 6,000 of those spaces are currently used by children of refugee claimants.

The program, first announced in November as part of Ottawa’s 2026–2028 Immigration Levels Plan, seeks to “accelerate” a pathway for work permit holders already in Canada to transition to permanent residence in fiscal years 2026 and 2027 to tackle labour shortages in in-demand sectors.

Government officials have not provided updates on the “one-time measure” since its announcement. Diab told the Toronto Star in an interview published March 6 that the measure is one way to reduce the temporary resident population, noting that more than half of the 395,000 people who became permanent residents in 2025 had previously held temporary permits.

“We have launched it already,” the minister said, adding that details on application and approval numbers are not yet available. “But we will in the month of April be able to provide more clarity and more detail on them,” she noted.

Diab’s comment echoed the three-year immigration levels plan, announced alongside Budget 2025 on Nov. 4, which states that reducing temporary resident admissions is part of Ottawa’s goal to “reduce the total number of temporary residents to less than five per cent of Canada’s population by the end of 2027.”

But according to Country Life in B.C., the initial offering through Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers closed without a single bid.

The properties, which include the historic Home Ranch near 70 Mile House, were first offered with a January 9 deadline. With no sales, the process moved to a “tender by auction” system with a March deadline.

Despite the lack of bids, Ritchie Bros. says interest remains high. But industry observers say the bigger issue is growing uncertainty about land tenure in B.C., particularly surrounding Aboriginal title claims.

Lawyers for Ottawa-area resident Evan Blackman have filed an appeal arguing that the freezing of his bank accounts under the federal Emergencies Act violated his rights under section 8 of the Charter, which protects Canadians against unreasonable search and seizure.

Blackman was arrested on February 18, 2022, during a large police operation that cleared Freedom Convoy protestors from downtown Ottawa.

He faced charges of mischief and obstructing a peace officer.

Hours after his release, Blackman discovered he could no longer access funds in any of his bank accounts. His bank informed him that the accounts had been frozen under emergency financial measures enacted by the federal government during the protest.

Court evidence showed police shared information with financial institutions identifying individuals connected to vehicles in the protest zone.

Institutions were then required to freeze accounts and report financial information for those designated as part of the operation.

In November 2025, the Ontario Court of Justice convicted Blackman of mischief and obstructing a peace officer and rejected his request to stay the charges, ruling the frozen accounts were separate from his arrest and did not affect criminal proceedings.

Blackman is now appealing to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, arguing the trial judge applied the wrong legal test and failed to consider whether the account freezes were part of the same coordinated operation against protestors.

“Freezing someone’s bank account is an extraordinary use of state power," Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms lawyer Chris Fleury said.

"When the government interferes with a person’s ability to access their own money, the courts must carefully examine whether those actions respected the protections guaranteed by the Charter.”

The appeal contends that the financial measures and police enforcement occurred simultaneously, involved the same law enforcement agencies, and were intended to achieve the same goal of ending the protest.

If successful, the appeal could lead to a new hearing on Blackman’s application for a stay of proceedings.

During a press conference on Monday, Trump did not rule out killing the new Supreme Leader of Iran, adding that he believes the younger Khamenei will “lead to just more of the same problem for the country.”

Trump also told reporters on Monday that the US has struck “over 5000 targets to date,” but is leaving “some of the most important targets for later, in case we need to do it.”

“If we hit them, it’s going to take many years for them to be rebuilt, having to do with electricity production and many other things, so we’re not looking to do that if we don’t have to,” he added. “We are waiting to see what happens before we hit them. As war in the Middle East rattles global energy markets and threatens one of the world’s most critical oil routes, Russian President Vladimir Putin is signaling that Moscow stands ready to step back into Europe’s energy market, if European leaders are willing to drop the “political pressure.”

Speaking Monday during a televised meeting with government officials and executives from Russia’s largest energy firms, including Gazprom, Rosneft, and Transneft, Putin said Russia remains prepared to resume large-scale oil and gas cooperation with European buyers under long-term agreements, according to Reuters.

The comments come as global energy markets face growing instability following U.S. and Israeli military strikes against Iran and the potential for disruptions to oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints.

Putin made it clear that Moscow has never closed the door on Europe. Instead, he suggested it was European political decisions, particularly sanctions and energy bans, that cut the continent off from Russian hydrocarbons.

According to the Kremlin, any renewed cooperation must guarantee “sustainability and stability” in trade relations, an apparent reference to the sweeping sanctions and energy restrictions imposed by the European Union after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“If European companies and European buyers suddenly decide to reorient themselves and provide us with long-term, sustainable cooperation, free from political pressures, free from political pressures, then yes, we’ve never refused it. We’re ready to work with Europeans too. But we need some signals from them that they’re ready and willing to work with us and will ensure this sustainability and stability,” Putin said.

Boeing shares fell a little more than 3% in late-morning trading in New York after a new report from The Wall Street Journal stated that deliveries of some narrow-body 737 MAX jets would be delayed following the discovery of scratched wiring on newly built aircraft.

Boeing told the WSJ that each affected jet can be fixed within days and that the wiring flaw will not derail its target of delivering about 500 737 MAX jets this year, though March deliveries could be slowed.

Flying taxi maker Archer Aviation has alleged that its rival Joby Aviation has been misleading regulators and investors for years by hiding its connections to China.

In a March 9 filing in federal court in California, Archer accused Joby of running a manufacturing unit in Shenzhen, China, for more than a decade that received government grants intended to spur technological development and of carrying out fraudulent business practices that gave it an improper competitive edge.

“Joby has falsely presented itself as a domestically rooted, American-made, fully vertically integrated aviation company while covertly relying on its Chinese manufacturing subsidiary,” Archer alleged in the filing.

The lawsuit alleges that the company later hid aerospace components shipped from that facility by falsely labeling thousands of pounds of imported components as mundane consumer goods such as hair clips, napkins, socks, and similar products.

This approach, the suit alleges, allowed Joby to “evade U.S. tariffs, distort competition, improperly secure government contracts and strategic partnerships, and circumvent national-security oversight.”

Archer’s counterclaim, filed in a lawsuit initiated by Joby, further argues that Joby secured at least $131 million in U.S. Air Force contracts while marketing its aircraft as committed to American innovation, raising national security concerns in areas in which Chinese supply chain dependencies were not fully disclosed.

Alex Spiro, an attorney for Joby, said in a statement to The Epoch Times that the company “doesn’t respond to nonsense.”

“Archer’s constant legal issues and flailing business operations have left it no choice but to resort to invented nonsensical theories,” Spiro said in a statement. “We will see them in court.” Continue...
