The Diamond Moon and Other Astronomical Events to See in September 2026

September is full of opportunities to expand your knowledge of the night sky. Mark your calendars.

August set the bar high for stargazers, with two eclipses and the peak of the Perseids meteor shower. But it’s not time to put away your telescopes, with some lesser-known astronomical events set to arrive across the sky this month.

The Pleiades will appear next to the moon, Venus will reach its brightest point of the year, Neptune will be in its best position for spotting with a telescope, and as an encore to the Perseids, there will also be a smaller meteor shower.

Here are some dates worth marking on your calendar for the month to come.

Venus near Spica: September 1 and 2

September begins with an easy opportunity to spot two of the brightest objects in the night sky. Venus will appear near Spica, the most intense star in the constellation Virgo. Both objects will be visible to the naked eye.

The exact timing of Venus’ appearance is September 2 at 00:17 UTC. This means that, depending on the your location, the conjunction could occur in the afternoon or evening of September 1.

It should be easy to tell the two celestial objects apart. Venus will shine much more brightly, looking like a white dot that doesn’t twinkle as much as the stars. Spica will appear nearby as a considerably fainter bluish dot. The two will be approximately 1.5 degrees apart.

A handy trick is that 0.5 degrees in the sky is roughly the average diameter of a full moon. Therefore, once you find the brightest point in the sky—which will be Venus—you can find Spica about three moons away.

A Diamond Studded Moon: September 3

The moon will be accompanied by one of the most famous star clusters in the sky.

On the night of September 3, it will appear approximately 1.1 degrees from the Pleiades—close enough to observe both objects in the same region.

The moon will be about 59 percent illuminated, according to Star Walk’s calculations.

The Pleiades, also known as “the Seven Sisters” or M45, is a star cluster located in the constellation Taurus.

Six or seven of its members are usually visible to the naked eye under good conditions, although the cluster contains hundreds of young stars.

These stars were born at approximately the same time and remain gravitationally bound together.

It will be vital for communications back to Earth

Blue Origin, a private space agency operated by Jeff Bezos, has been selected by NASA to build a 'next-generation' communications system that serves as a 'Wi-Fi network' of sorts around Mars.

This new infrastructure will prove to be vital for progress towards a Mars expedition, as while it technically doesn't provide internet service on the red planet's surface, it notably expands communications and navigation services between Mars and Earth, laying the foundations for sustained exploration in the near future.

As a sign of its commitment NASA has provided as much as $700 million for this deal, with Jeff Bezos' company expected to complete the 'high-performance Mars telecommunications orbiter' by December 31, 2028 at the very latest.

NASA's Artemis missions are finally opening up the possibility for an extended human presence in space once again with a long-awaited landing on the Moon, and this new Blue Origin partnership could extend those fortunes to Mars too with many astronauts dreaming about reaching the planet for the first time in history.

How will this telecommunications orbiter work?

According to NASA's official release on the new partnership, Blue Origin's latest project would "enable reliable, high-bandwidth communications and navigation services for current and future Mars missions."

It will be implemented as a cog in NASA's wider space infrastructure line up, with the orbiter consisting of a "high-performance telecommunications spacecraft orbiting Mars, transmitting science data, imagery, navigation information, and critical mission communications for spacecraft operating on and around the planet."

Right now it's quite difficult for NASA to receive regular and consistent communications from Mars due to its distance from Earth, yet this potentially vital piece of infrastructure would serve as a pathway for that data to be transmitted, almost like a Wi-Fi network that takes your information from one computer to another.

Will this increase the chances of a manned mission to Mars?

While the existence of this project casts an eye towards the future of Mars exploration by NASA, it's likely something that will happen in decades rather than years with the Moon remaining the current focus.

Not only is the lunar surface a far easier prospect when it comes to distance, but it's something that NASA has obviously achieved before – albeit over half a century ago – and has been concretely building towards for a number of years now with several Artemis missions already under its belt.

It's likely that we see the creation of a permanent base on the Moon before NASA even begins to properly prepare for any potential Mars missions, yet the Blue Origin project remains an important stepping stone in understanding more about the big red planet.

Additionally, NASA still has to solve the unavoidable issue of preservation when it comes to a Mars mission, as current technology would result in an estimated travel time of around six months each way which will obviously be challenging, if not currently impossible from a supplies perspective.

Scientists have managed to experiment with a new form of food that is created from recycled plastic bottles, but there remain concerns surrounding health risks associated with extended stays in space that persist in the eyes of NASA.

Oklahoma City Manager Arrested on 11 Felony Voter Fraud Charges After Falsifying Registration Applications With Other People’s Names

The city manager of a tiny Oklahoma town has been arrested and charged with 11 felony counts of voter registration fraud after investigators say she submitted applications using other people’s names and forged their signatures.

Shonda Lou Barnes, city manager for the Town of Mannsville in Johnston County, was taken into custody at her home Monday afternoon on a warrant charging her with 11 counts of false affidavit in voter registration. She was booked into the Johnston County Jail, KXII reported.

The Johnston County Election Board flagged the applications in late May.

The forms had been submitted from the Mannsville area just before the voter registration deadline so the names could vote in the June primary.

Investigators found multiple applications bearing matching signatures that did not belong to the people whose names were on the forms. Authorities then traced those applications to Barnes.

Johnston County Sheriff Gary W. Dodd did not mince words:

“As one of Oklahoma’s 77 constitutionally elected sheriffs, it is our duty and the duty of every Sheriff’s Office in this State to protect the integrity of our elections — one of the most sacred rights of citizens of this country.”

This is not some abstract “voting irregularity.” This is a sitting city official allegedly manufacturing voters by stealing identities and forging signatures so those names could participate in a primary election.

And it is not Barnes’ first tangle with public money and public records.

In 2017, while serving as Mannsville town treasurer, Barnes was charged with felony embezzlement after a state audit found nearly $80,000 in mismanaged funds between 2011 and 2015. Court documents at the time alleged she obtained a state grant under false pretenses.

The same audit documented unauthorized overtime, scrap-metal sales with no deposits, an unauthorized inmate commissary fund, unsupported food purchases, and missing receipts. Her nephew was serving as fire chief during part of that period.

Appeals Court Restores Bowe Bergdahl’s Desertion Conviction — Rules Federal Judge Had No Authority to Erase Court-Martial Judgment

The United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled Tuesday that a federal district court had no authority to overturn former Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl’s military conviction for desertion and misbehavior before the enemy.

Remember Bowe Bergdahl?

He’s the Army soldier who walked off his post in Afghanistan in 2009, left his brothers in a war zone, and triggered a desperate search that cost American lives.

Bergdahl abandoned his post in Afghanistan on June 29, 2009, without authorization. He was subsequently captured by the Taliban-linked Haqqani network and held for nearly five years.

His disappearance triggered a massive search-and-rescue operation that placed other American service members in danger and resulted in several injuries, according to the court.

The six U.S. Army soldiers commonly cited as having died during operations allegedly connected to the search for Bowe Bergdahl were:

Staff Sgt. Clayton P. Bowen

Pfc. Morris L. Walker

Staff Sgt. Kurt R. Curtiss

2nd Lt. Darryn D. Andrews

Pfc. Matthew M. Martinek

Staff Sgt. Michael C. Murphrey

In 2014, Barack Obama approved an outrageous prisoner exchange that released five Taliban detainees from Guantanamo Bay in return for Bergdahl. Obama then staged a celebratory Rose Garden appearance with Bergdahl’s parents.

Bergdahl ultimately pleaded guilty in October 2017 to desertion and misbehavior before the enemy.

Military prosecutors requested a 14-year prison sentence. Instead, military judge Col. Jeffrey Nance sentenced Bergdahl to a dishonorable discharge, reduction to the Army’s lowest enlisted rank, and forfeiture of $10,000, without a single day in prison.

President Trump blasted that lenient punishment as a “complete and total disgrace to our Country and to our Military,” as The Gateway Pundit reported.

In 2023, Judge Walton vacated the conviction after concluding that Nance should have disclosed his application for a Justice Department immigration-judge position. Nance had submitted his ruling rejecting one of Bergdahl’s claims as the sole writing sample accompanying that application.

But the D.C. Circuit did not decide whether Nance’s undisclosed application created an appearance of bias. Instead, it ruled that Walton never possessed jurisdiction to vacate the military judgment in the first place.

Bergdahl had already pursued his case through the Army Court of Criminal Appeals and the Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces. Both military appellate courts upheld the conviction.

He then attempted to use a civilian district court to obtain what amounted to another direct appeal.

On Tuesday, the D.C. Circuit finally put an end to Bergdahl’s latest legal stunt.

A three-judge panel ruled that federal district courts have no authority to vacate a military court-martial judgment. Senior U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton’s 2023 order wiping out Bergdahl’s conviction is vacated. The case goes back to Walton with orders to dismiss it for lack of jurisdiction.

Bergdahl’s military conviction for desertion and misbehavior before the enemy stands.

Circuit Judge Robert Wilkins wrote the opinion. Chief Judge Sri Srinivasan and Judge Gregory Katsas joined. Wilkins put it in plain English:

“Because Bergdahl seeks to have his court-martial conviction declared expunged and without effect … he effectively asked the District Court to vacate the military judgment. However, the authority to vacate a court-martial judgment belongs to tribunals exercising direct appellate review, not district courts conducting collateral review.”

Another senior figure at Democratic fundraising platform ActBlue invoked the Fifth Amendment during congressional testimony Tuesday as House Republicans investigate allegations of fraudulent and foreign political donations.

Kimberly Peeler-Allen, a member of ActBlue's board of directors, invoked her constitutional right against self-incrimination while appearing before the House Administration, Judiciary and Oversight committees, according to sources familiar with her testimony.

Her decision follows similar moves by other ActBlue officials.

ActBlue co-founder Matt DeBergalis invoked the Fifth during a closed-door deposition Aug. 20, while CEO Regina Wallace-Jones asserted the same right during congressional questioning in June.

The House Administration Committee began investigating ActBlue in 2023 following concerns that the fundraising platform's fraud-prevention procedures were inadequate to prevent illegal foreign donations.

Committee Chairman Bryan Steil, R-Wis., has focused in part on ActBlue's previous practice of not requiring donors to provide credit card CVV security codes.

"We have an entity here with ActBlue, that has raised roughly $20 billion since its creation," Steil told Fox News.

"We want to make sure that they have the fraud prevention protocols in place to make sure that foreign funds are not coming into U.S. elections."

Steil acknowledged that witnesses have a constitutional right to invoke the Fifth Amendment but said their refusal to answer questions has frustrated lawmakers seeking information about ActBlue's operations.

Bel was one of the more than 350,000 Haitian immigrants who lost TPS status after the Supreme Court in June cleared the way for the Trump administration to end the program, which provides work authorization and protection from deportation to migrants fleeing countries that are deemed unsafe due to armed conflicts or natural disasters.

He had recently been fitted with a GPS ankle monitor by the Department of Homeland Security as part of the department's effort to track former TPS holders, according to posts on his social media account.

I came to this country to pursue my education, I didn't come here to commit a crime or hurt anyone," Bel posted in July. "Yet now I'm walking through the streets of the United States with a GPS monitor on my leg, carrying a feeling of shame and humiliation that I never imagined I would experience."

During a press conference Tuesday, Pastor Carl Ruby read a statement on behalf of Bel's father in which the elder Bel said, "After my son was outfitted with the ankle monitor, he felt like he was treated like an animal."

A record 89% of US adults say government corruption is widespread - which is up 10% from last year, and far above the average 72%-79% between 2010 and 2025, according to a new Gallup poll.

Unsurprisingly, Democrats' perceptions of government corruption spiked the most since 2024 - going from 57% to 91% this year, while independents also feel this way at 90%. Republicans at 83% are up 12 points since 2024.

According to Gallup, the reasons are different between Republicans and Democrats - with Dems' perceptions appearing closely linked with whatever party is in power, while Republicans have much greater consistency on the topic - which "suggests a more underlying view of government corruption that depends less on the party in power."

Gallup also notes that before the recent increase, the US already outranked other advanced economies in corruption perceptions. Continued:

The U.S. has increasingly diverged from other advanced economies in perceptions of government corruption, based on Gallup polling across the 38 member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. The median level of perceived corruption among OECD countries has fallen from 69% in 2009 to below 60% since 2022.

Full data collection for 2026 is not yet complete in all countries, so the closest comparison across the OECD is from 2025, when a median of 59% said corruption is widespread in their government.

In the early years of this trend, countries such as Greece, Hungary and the Czech Republic all saw scores above 90%. But over time, the highest levels of perceived corruption across the bloc have gradually fallen, reaching 79% in 2025 — placing the U.S. atop the OECD rankings for the first time, even before the additional 10-point increase within the past year.

By 2024, there was already a 15-point gap between the U.S. and OECD countries on this metric, but that rose to 20 points in 2025 as U.S. perceptions of corruption increased six points to 79%, compared with 59% across the OECD. The gap between the U.S. and the OECD median could potentially be even wider this year.

Two CDC-supported studies on Danish autism rates between 1995 and 2000 present contradictory findings: one claims an increase in autism cases after the mercury-based preservative thimerosal was removed from childhood vaccines, while the other reports a steady decline.

Both papers cannot be correct. And the CDC will not come clean about the discrepancy between the studies. One researcher, former CDC employee Diana Schendel, was involved in both studies. She should be questioned under oath as to what happened.

Two US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (“CDC”) studies of the autism rate in Denmark in the 90s: the first one, produced by admitted felon Poul Thorsen, says the autism rate increased from 1995 to 2000, which was then used to claim there is no connection between giving infants mercury in vaccines and autism; the second study found that the autism rate in Denmark not only decreased from 1995 to 2000, but was more than 10 times higher than the rate claimed by Thorsen. At least one of these studies is bogus.

Thorsen was a Danish researcher hired by the CDC in 1999 to do a series of studies, including several on the role of vaccines causing autism. He was indicted for embezzling more than $1 million from the CDC and other crimes by a US federal court in 2011. He lived openly in Denmark, where he was an instructor at Aarhus University, but was finally arrested and extradited to the US in 2025. Yesterday he pleaded guilty.

The first study, ‘Thimerosal and the Occurrence of Autism: Negative Ecological Evidence from Danish Population-Based Data’, a widely publicised and highly influential study released in 2003, claimed that mercury in vaccines played no role in causing autism because the rate of autism in Danish children increased after mercury was removed from Danish-produced vaccines in 1992.

Another CDC study, ‘Recurrence of Autism Spectrum Disorders in Full- and Half-Siblings and Trends Over Time: A Population-Based Cohort Study’, led by Therese K. Gronborg and released in 2013, however, shows the exact opposite: that the rate of autism in Danish children decreased after mercury was removed. And if the increasing rate of autism claimed in the earlier study showed that mercury had no role in causing autism, then logic would also require that the rate of autism going down, as shown in the current study, indicates that mercury in vaccines may very well have a great deal to do with causing autism.

Another Google Court Loss: Federal Judge Orders Tech Giant to Change Its Ad Practices After Ruling It Ran Illegal Monopoly

Google received another public flogging in federal court on Wednesday.

U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema in Alexandria, Virginia, ordered Google to stop the conduct that has been strangling revenue from web publishers for years — the latest blow in the government’s antitrust case against the tech giant’s advertising empire.

This follows Brinkema’s ruling last year that Google violated US antitrust laws by unlawfully maintaining monopoly power in open web display advertising. It was the SECOND time a federal judge ruled that Google held an illegal monopoly in part of its business, after Judge Amit Mehta found the same thing in online search.

Google is a monopolist. The courts confirmed this again.

The Department of Justice announced its victory in their case in April 2025:

“This is a landmark victory in the ongoing fight to stop Google from monopolizing the digital public square,” said Attorney General Pamela Bondi. “This Department of Justice will continue taking bold legal action to protect the American people from encroachments on free speech and free markets by tech companies.”

Assistant Attorney General Abigail Slater went even further in the same DOJ statement:

“The Court’s ruling is clear: Google is a monopolist and has abused its monopoly power. Google’s unlawful dominance allows them to censor and even deplatform American voices. And at the same time, Google destroyed and hid information that exposed its illegal conduct. Today’s opinion confirms Google’s controlling hand over online advertising and, increasingly, the internet itself.”

Google censors and deplatforms American voices. The DOJ said it clear and out loud.

Here’s what the case was about… Google controlled BOTH sides of the online advertising market. It owned the platforms publishers use to sell ad space, the platforms advertisers use to buy it, AND the AdX exchange where the transactions happen — while pocketing a 20 percent fee.

Government lawyers even recounted how a senior Google executive once compared the setup to Goldman Sachs owning the New York Stock Exchange.

Historically, Google has taken a cut of over 30 cents on the dollar for every advert that passes through the system.

On Wednesday, Judge Brinkema, in a two-page order, declined to force Google to sell off the AdX exchange. But she ordered “behavioral remedies” — a set of rules governing how Google must operate — and will publish the full details in 14 days. She indicated she accepted “most of the parties’ proposed behavioral remedies.”

The DOJ said it was “pleased that the court ordered substantial relief” and added: “We are one step closer to restoring competition and bringing relief for the American people in online advertising markets. The Department is evaluating appropriate next steps.”

Google, of course, spun the ruling as a win because the court didn’t break the company apart, and it says it will appeal.

But Google’s troubles are far from over. Last year, the European Commission fined the company €2.95 billion ($3.5 billion) over its ad tech practices in an EU shakedown. A trial in Texas over its digital advertising practices was paused pending the outcome in Virginia.

And publishers and competitors are moving ahead with their own lawsuits seeking financial damages.

Two federal judges. Two illegal monopolies. And Big Tech’s grip on the digital public square is finally being pried loose — one ruling at a time.

Mysterious decagon over Saturn’s south pole even bigger than its famous northern hexagon

Cape Canaveral: Scientists have discovered an enormous 10-sided wave pattern in the icy ammonia clouds over Saturn’s south pole.

The spinning, meandering decagon appears to be even bigger and more unstable than the hexagon of clouds around Saturn’s north pole that was spied by NASA’s twin Voyagers in the 1980s, the Spanish-led team reported Wednesday.

This new jet stream formation popped up in the Hubble Space Telescope’s sights in 2023 after earlier observations came up empty.

The researchers suspect the bizarre atmospheric phenomenon may have formed between 2017 and 2023, when Saturn’s south pole was tilted away from Earth and therefore out of view.

It could still be evolving, with a single side of the decagon already exceeding 16,700 kilometers.

The findings are significant because it shows “the ‘unique’ hexagon is not as extraordinary as we thought," lead author Agustin Sanchez-Lavega with the University of the Basque Country said in an email.

The findings were published in the journal Science Advances.

Although all of the solar system’s planets with atmospheres have wave-spawning disturbances, only Saturn churns them out looking like polygons, geometric shapes bounded by straight lines.

Both sit on jet streams, but the hexagon is practically stationary whereas the decagon migrates eastward at a tame 6 mph (10 kph).

“Saturn still has the ability to surprise us," the University of Leicester's Leigh Fletcher said in a statement. He measured the wind in the decagon as part of the study using the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile.

By comparing these two formations on opposite ends of Saturn, scientists can learn more about the weather patterns of giant gas planets, according to Sanchez-Lavega.

“This is a highly interesting phenomenon that appears to be unique to Saturn, and we want to know why,” he said.

Sanchez-Lavega wonders whether they might be related to the cyclones on Jupiter that are arranged in polygonal shapes.

Improving views of Saturn's southern hemisphere over the next several years should allow astronomers to capture more details of the decagon and perhaps solve “this intriguing atmospheric mystery,” he said.

It’s unclear whether the decagon will last as long as the hexagon, which has been visible by spacecraft for more than 40 years. That is longer than a Saturnian year, which is equivalent to 30 Earth years.

“For the time being, all I can confirm is that the decagon is still there,” Sanchez-Lavega said.

NASA Rocket Takes First Multi-Point Look Inside Radio-Disrupting Clouds

High above Earth, thin veils of metallic haze drift through the edge of space.

Known as sporadic E layers, these high-altitude “clouds” form from the vaporized dust of burnt-up meteors, earning their name from the unpredictable way they emerge and then dissipate.

Now, new results from a NASA sounding rocket — a suborbital research rocket — that flew five detectors through one of these layers simultaneously reveal unexpected complexity in the layer for the first time.

Though invisible to the eye, sporadic E layers make their presence known to the radio signals we rely on for long-distance communication.

When present, sporadic E can send those signals ping-ponging off in unexpected directions, rendering the technology temporarily unreliable.

Scientists have long sought a fuller understanding of these radio-disrupting clouds, but until recently, they had only sampled them one narrow slice at a time.

The rocket, called the sporadic E Electrodynamics Demonstration, or SpEED Demon for short, launched from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia on Aug. 24, 2022, and demonstrated the first concurrent, multi-point view inside sporadic E.

Its results, from a team led by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, are described in a new study in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics.

Sporadic E layers form in the ionosphere, a region of the upper atmosphere beginning around 40 miles (60 kilometers) up where the neutral gases begin to transform into plasma, or ionized gas.

Some of the particles there come from meteors, which burn up and leave behind traces of iron, magnesium, and other metals. These metals occasionally clump into dense, cloud-like sheets — the sporadic E layers — that reflect radio waves.

“Sporadic E layers are, in one sense, giant mirrors of radio frequency waves in the sky,” said Aroh Barjatya, the mission’s principal investigator and a professor of engineering physics at Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach, Florida.

When a sporadic E layer forms, signals meant to travel out to space can ricochet back toward the ground.

Air traffic controllers and marine radio users may pick up distant transmissions as though they were nearby, and radars scanning beyond the horizon can register so-called “ghosts,” or false targets. The effects reach everyday technology, too.

“The biggest source of error in the GPS in your phone, for example, is from the plasma in the ionosphere, and sporadic E layers can contribute to this uncertainty,” said Henry Valentine, the study’s lead author, who conducted the work at Embry-Riddle and is now a researcher at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory.

Station Crew Cleans Up, Relaxes After Busy Month of Spacewalks

The Expedition 75 crew members are coming off a busy period that saw four spacewalks take place in one month outside of the International Space Station.

The orbital septet cleaned spacesuits, conducted cargo operations, and relaxed throughout Wednesday.

Astronauts Sophie Adenot of ESA (European Space Agency) and Jessica Meir of NASA completed the last of four spacewalks during a monthlong period on Tuesday, Sept. 1.

Adenot and Meir spent six hours and 49 minutes installing a spacecraft navigation aid, swabbing the station’s exterior for microorganisms, and preparing a cosmic particle detector for future upgrades.

The duo spent Wednesday mostly relaxing taking time out for exercise and joining NASA flight engineers Anil Menon and Jack Hathaway for a post-spacewalk conference with mission controllers on the ground.

Menon worked throughout Wednesday refilling spacesuit tanks with water, photographing suit gloves for inspection, and downlinking video captured from cameras attached to the spacewalkers’ helmets.

He also transferred cargo in and out of the Cygnus XL cargo spacecraft berthed to the Unity module since April 13. Hathaway swapped out orbital plumbing components in the Tranquility module and uninstalled gear from inside a research incubator.

The duo also spent a portion of Wednesday relaxing following their daylong support of Tuesday’s spacewalking activities.

During August, three spacewalks were performed with the first taking place on Aug. 6 when Meir and Menon installed a modification kit on the station’s starboard truss structure preparing it for a future roll-out solar array.

The next two spacewalks saw Menon and Adenot disconnect a failed space-to-ground antenna from the Z1 truss segment on Aug. 18, then install a spare antenna on Z1 on Aug. 25.

The station’s three cosmonauts from Roscosmos stayed busy throughout Wednesday with a variety of research, cargo, and inspection duties.

Flight engineer Andrey Fedyaev turned off a camera that automatically photographed wildfires on Earth in multiple wavelengths during the crew’s sleep shift. Next, he photographed the condition of light fixtures in the Zarya module for analysis.

Flight engineer Pyotr Dubrov packed items for disposal inside the Progress 94 resupply ship then photographed the condition of windows inside the Zvezda and Nauka modules.

Flight engineer Anna Kikina checked the operation of scientific equipment, deployed carbon dioxide monitoring hardware, then cleaned Roscosmos ventilation systems.

NASA’s SpaceX Crew-13 mission now is targeted to launch no earlier than late September to the International Space Station. A new target launch date will be shared once confirmed.

Few thoughts in response:

1) NASA has not given up on LEO. Within weeks of being on the job, I publicly addressed the Starliner situation and the role NASA played in it, and we have since taken a very active role with Boeing in implementing the investigation recommendations and putting Starliner on a path to life beyond Atlas V. We intend for Starliner to safely transport astronauts to and from the International Space Station, and commercial LEO destinations, in the years ahead. I actually agree that we should have more crewed transport vehicles, but how many major endeavors do you want NASA to solve simultaneously? The more NASA takes on in parallel, the less will be accomplished. And if there is considerable demand in LEO and lots of economic potential, nothing stops the companies referenced from raising capital and building vehicles. We are trying to get back to the Moon, build a base, get underway on nuclear power, launch more science missions, replace the International Space Station with a commercial service, but now we also need to fund several new crewed vehicles too? To the author’s point, nothing stopped one company from building a suborbital vehicle and operating it dozens of times without NASA as an anchor tenant, but I think market realities have spoken and the service appears to have been paused.

2) America and NASA are not giving up our astronauts, and as a commercial astronaut, I state that as emphatically and patriotically as possible. Of course, if useful research and affordable data become available as a commercial service, similarly to how we purchase and make available Earth observation data, we would have to look at it.

3) I am about as pro-commercial space as it gets, for what I hope are obvious reasons. But to be clear, you cannot simply slap the word “commercial” on every problem or opportunity, pound the table about “deleting NASA’s burdensome requirements,” and assume it automatically produces a more affordable, better solution supported by a thriving market. When people talk about relying on private capital and commercial services, someone still has to pay, a service provider has to execute really well, and if NASA is the customer, it is likely a service that has rarely been done before. If it turns out NASA is ultimately the only meaningful customer, that has the potential to become a very expensive proposition, if it works at all.

U.S. DOE announces $12 million space solar fund

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has launched a $12 million fund for the research and development of space-based solar technologies, with DOE officials announcing the fund on Sept. 1.

Aiming to expand domestic manufacturing of solar panels for outer space applications, the Space Photovoltaics (PV) Research and Development Partnership Intermediary Agreement (PIA) opportunity “will help ensure the next generation of space photovoltaics (PV) is developed in America,” the DOE says.

Led by the department’s Integrated Energy Systems Office (IESO), the program hopes to accelerate technical innovation on U.S. shores, driving down prices of domestic space solar products and projects.

“The next frontier for solar PV power generation is in space,” says assistant Secretary of Energy Audrey Robertson.

“As demand for space-grade PV skyrockets, this investment will establish American leadership in next-generation, space-based PV, bolster our national security, and enhance our economic competitiveness.”

The funding will focus on both solar cell innovation and “rapid production and demonstration,” according to the DOE. Winning cell innovation projects will be awarded $1.5 million each, and production and demonstration projects will receive $2 million each.

Funding energy on the final frontier

What makes space solar so exceptionally valuable, the DOE says, is the removal of solar energy’s greatest barrier to operations: weather.

The vast majority of terrestrial solar projects are subject to interruption thanks to inclement weather conditions, and all terrestrial projects are, of course, at the mercy of Earth’s rotation.

Positioning solar energy projects in space solves both of those problems with ease, DOE officials say.

Despite policy changes largely limiting solar and other renewable energy projects in the U.S., the second Trump administration’s race for energy security and “space superiority” has kept the door open for space solar initiatives like the PIA.

“Space PV also has the potential to facilitate major advances in spaceflight and further the Trump Administration’s space superiority agenda,” DOE representatives say.

“The United States, a longstanding global leader in PV technology, developed the first solar cells specifically tailored for spacecraft and, in March 1958, launched the world’s first solar-powered satellite.”

The PIA will fund space-based solar projects for up to three years, with both university and industrial research laboratories eligible for the R&D opportunity.

Potential applicants for the Department of Energy’s space solar fund must complete their bid for department funding Oct. 8. TechWerx, the DOE’s government-funded innovation hub, will host an informational webinar on the research fund Sept. 15.

SpaceX Starlink Mission

September 2, 2026

On Wednesday, September 2 at 1:42 a.m. PT, Falcon 9 launched 27 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

This was the 35th flight for the first stage booster supporting this mission, which previously launched Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich, DART, Transporter-7, Iridium OneWeb, SDA-0B, NROL-113, NROL-167, NROL-149, NAOS, and now 26 Starlink missions.

Following stage separation, the first stage landed on the Of Course I Still Love You droneship, which was stationed in the Pacific Ocean.

There was a possibility that residents of Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura counties may have heard one or more sonic booms during the launch, but what residents experienced depended on weather and other conditions.
