Asteroid CERNQ52 entered Earth's atmosphere on September 6.

It was detected only hours before impact.

The small asteroid burned up over the Indian Ocean.

A tiny asteroid named CERNQ52 entered Earth’s atmosphere over the Indian Ocean after being detected only hours earlier. Here’s what scientists know about the space rock and the danger it posed.

The asteroid was expected to burn up as it plunged through the atmosphere. This could have created a spectacular fireball in the sky.

For anyone watching from a dark location, the event may have appeared as a sudden bright flash.

CERNQ52 was spotted by the Mount Lemmon Survey in Arizona. The survey is part of the wider Catalina Sky Survey. These programmes search the sky for near-Earth objects.

The discovery gave astronomers only a short window to observe the asteroid. More observations were then used to calculate its trajectory.

This rapid tracking was crucial. A small asteroid can be difficult to detect until it gets relatively close to Earth.

How big is asteroid CERNQ52?

Despite the alarming situation, CERNQ52 was extremely small. Estimates put its size at roughly 0.6 to 1.2 metres across.

This is tiny compared with asteroids capable of causing widespread destruction. Its small size also meant that the atmosphere was likely to destroy most of it.

The asteroid would face enormous heating and pressure as it entered Earth's atmosphere. It could therefore break apart and burn up before reaching the ground.

When did CERNQ52 enter the Atmosphere?

The asteroid was predicted to enter the atmosphere at around 16:12 UTC on September 6. This was approximately 9:42 pm IST in India.

The exact timing could change slightly as new observations were added. Its predicted entry region was over the ocean. This significantly reduced the risk to people and infrastructure.

Is this an alarming situation? 

For now, there is no reason to panic. CERNQ52 was far too small to trigger a large-scale asteroid disaster.

It was expected to burn up high in the atmosphere. But the incident raises an intriguing question. What if a larger asteroid approached Earth this quickly?

CERNQ52 is reportedly only the 13th known case of a small asteroid being detected before atmospheric impact. So, this was not an asteroid disaster. It was something more useful.

Winter near the Antarctic Circle brings months of frozen darkness, when sea ice chokes ocean waters and many of its denizens hunker down to ride out the harsh conditions.

But as winter began to release its icy grip, an uncommonly clear satellite image revealed that part of this remote realm was still very much awake, at least volcanically speaking.

Mount Michael, the stratovolcano at the center of Saunders Island, rises above the ice-filled South Atlantic Ocean in this image, acquired with the OLI (Operational Land Imager) on the NASA-USGS Landsat 8 satellite on August 24, 2026.

The natural-color image is overlaid with an infrared signal (OLI bands 7-6-5), shown in red, revealing heat from the persistent lava lake in its summit crater.

A puff of a volcanic plume hovering over the peak, along with darkened snow on its northern slopes, also suggests ongoing activity.

Saunders Island is one of the South Sandwich Islands, a string of small volcanic peaks about 350 kilometers (220 miles) long that formed from the South American plate subducting beneath the tiny South Sandwich plate.

Regular eruptions, including at Mount Michael, have occurred on these islands in recent centuries.

Because of the volcanoes’ remoteness, scientists rely on satellite data to understand their activity.

An analysis of thermal anomalies in Landsat, Sentinel, and ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer) observations spanning 30 years led researchers to conclude that Mount Michael hosts a persistent lava lake in its summit crater.

Only a handful of other volcanoes on Earth, including Kīlauea, Nyamulagira, and Erta Ale, are known to have similar, frequently active features.

Thermal observations from the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) and VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) instruments have also enabled long-term monitoring of Mount Michael.

Data provided through MIROVA, a near-real-time volcanic hot spot detection system, indicate that low-intensity activity has been ongoing at the volcano for the past several years.

Other observations from NASA's Aura satellite show that emissions of sulfur dioxide and other gases are common at Mount Michael.

The cloud-free window over Mount Michael would close in short order. One week later, when Landsat 9 passed over the island, a more active atmosphere had returned. But the weather patterns interacted with the island to put on a spectacle of their own.

The 843-meter-high (2,766-foot-high) peak jutting from the ocean disturbed passing winds to produce a series of wave clouds resembling the wake of a ship, a familiar phenomenon in this region.

False-color imagery captured by NASA’s Aqua satellite indicates that a volcanic track caused by degassing sulfur dioxide was likely present as well.

Space America? Trump Claims Ownership Of The Moon For The USA In Bizarre Truth Social Posts

According to Trump, the Moon belongs to the US. According to the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, not so much.

In a slew of new posts to Trump-owned social media platform Truth Social, President Donald Trump has claimed ownership of the Moon for America, whilst also suggesting that the US state of New Mexico could be renamed New America.

Social media is fairly new, and we can only speculate how previous presidents of the USA would have used it. Except to say, of course, that Theodore Roosevelt would, with 100 percent certainty, have been constantly posting thirst traps.

Giant killer robots and... the Moon?

Well, we're now in a world in which the actual president of the actual USA cannot help but post artificially-generated images and videos on a daily basis, covering a wide variety of topics.

Over the last day or so, Trump has posted images of himself mocked up as Hulk Hogan draped in the stars and stripes, images of himself smashing up Iran with a large mallet, and an image of George Washington sat listening to Trump in the Oval Office.

Those are just some of the posts which don't involve him sitting on a throne surrounded by killer robots.

With that being his style, we probably shouldn't place too much emphasis on what Trump posts to social media.

But a few posts that have caused a little attention from the media, partly because of the recent renaming of the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario, are a post suggesting New Mexico should be renamed New America and another claiming that the Moon belongs to the USA.

Who owns the Moon?

While the US is free to rename various landmarks, and the rest of the world is free to ignore that, there are international agreements that prevent the US (or any other nation) from claiming ownership of the Moon.

In 1967, 111 countries signed up to the Outer Space Treaty, the important bit of international law that governs what humanity can and cannot get up to beyond the confines of Earth.

That includes everything from who is responsible for space junk to, rather pleasingly, who actually owns Neil Armstrong’s substantial collection of Moon poops.

Crucially, the treaty explicitly states that “outer space is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means”. In other words, no country can plant a flag on a bit of celestial real estate and declare it theirs.

This applies whether you're talking about the Moon, Mars, or, for someone with truly unreasonable ambitions and/or misconceptions about gas, Jupiter.

“The most important precept of the Outer Space Treaty is that space is for everyone, and everyone shall have freedom of exploration and access to all areas,” Michelle Hanlon, Air and Space Law Instructor at Research Counsel, told IFLScience.

“The other really important precept is that no state may claim territory in space. Nobody has that authority over the Moon.”

Could there be a Trump Towers: Lunar?

This becomes a little more complicated when you start talking about actually building things up there.

“If you’re building lunar research stations, the Outer Space Treaty has this concept that if it's for science it's OK, so long as you share all your information with everybody,” Hanlon explained.

“But what about building a hotel on the Moon? There's nobody who has the authority to say, yes, you can build that hotel."

In short, the international treaty is unambiguous, and the US is signed up to it. That sounds reassuring, but the President has not exactly been shy about withdrawing from international agreements.

"In reality, the only international law that exists is that which is imposed by the hegemon (or hegemons), who can break it at will," Space Industry Analyst Peter Hague explained on Substack, calling the space treaty "essentially a fig leaf" at this point.

"No major signatory to the Outer Space Treaty considers its most restrictive aspects, on matters such as territorial claims and military activities, as things they are committed not to do," he added.

The treaty is not some magical document which prevents wrongdoing in space by virtue of existing, but a commitment to enforce the rules through pressure here on Earth.

We don't yet know how the world would respond should anyone try to claim ownership of the Moon. With the main barriers still being getting to the Moon and remaining there for significant periods of time, don't expect our natural satellite to become Space America anytime soon.

Authorities in western Libya have arrested five people in connection with a recent string of drone attacks on a major energy facility.

The government said the arrests exposed a “vast plot” and described the attacks as part of a coordinated campaign.

Authorities said the group were part of a "sabotage cell" who also planned to attack a power station south of Tripoli, as well as other vital facilities.

They said foreigners are among the suspects but didn’t give further details.

In August, a large petrol reservoir in Zawiya caught fire during a drone attack on a major oil facility near Tripoli, Libya's state-owned oil company NOC said.

The reservoir is part of the second-largest oil refinery in Libya, with a refining capacity of 120,000 barrels per day. Other drone attacks followed at the Zawiya complex, which is located some 45 kilometres west of Tripoli.

On Thursday, another attack on fuel tanks outside of Tripoli was thwarted, the NOC said.

Libya has the largest oil reserves in Africa. But the country has been beset by violence and instability since the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

Two governments are currently vying for power: the UN-recognised administration in Tripoli led by Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah, and a rival in the east backed by military commander Khalifa Haftar.

Amritsar: Operations at Amritsar airport were suspended for nearly an hour and a half on Sunday night after drones were spotted across the airfield, forcing the diversion of seven flights before the situation was declared normal, Airport Director Anirudh Kumar Sharma said.

Speaking to ANI, Sharma said the Air Traffic Control (ATC) unit received a report from the Indian Air Force at approximately 9.45 pm stating that drones had been spotted across the airfield.

Following the airport's Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for drone sightings, a Joint Action Committee was activated and assembled in the control tower.

The committee determined that the drone activity could disrupt scheduled landings, leading to the decision to close the airfield. Operations were suspended around 9:50 pm.

"At approximately 9:45 pm, the Air Traffic Control (ATC) unit received a report from the Indian Air Force stating that drones had been spotted across the airfield.

By that time, several aircraft scheduled to land in Amritsar were already circling overhead. Following our Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for drone sightings, a Joint Action Committee was activated and assembled in the control tower.

They determined that the drone activity could disrupt scheduled landings, so the decision was made to close the airfield for operations," he said.

With multiple aircraft holding overhead, seven flights had to be diverted, two to Chandigarh and five to Delhi, Sharma said. Police are investigating the incident.

"Airport operations were suspended around 9:50 pm. In the meantime, we had to divert aircraft that were holding overhead; there were approximately seven such aircraft. Two flights were diverted to Chandigarh, and five were diverted to Delhi.

Around 23:00 hours (11:00 pm), the Joint Action Committee assessed that the situation was under control andsince there was no further drone activitydecided to resume normal operations; we declared operations open starting at 23:15 hours.

Subsequently, the flights began returning. Of the seven diverted flights, five returned; one Air India flight that had gone to Delhi was cancelled, and the Malaysia flight is expected to arrive today. Everything has returned to normal.

As for the investigation, that matter is being handled by the police," he added.

Unauthorized UAS forced aerial operations to stop during active wildfires.

Two unauthorized drones interfered with aerial firefighting operations last week as crews battled a wildfire in Garland County, Arkansas.

Regine Skelton of the Arkansas Department of Agriculture’s Forestry Division told KARK-TV that the drones limited the agency’s air response.

The department issued similar guidance in August, warning that unauthorized drones can ground firefighting aircraft, slow emergency response and create airspace hazards.

No details have been released about the drones, their operators or how long the latest interruptions lasted.

Drone interference has also affected wildfire operations elsewhere in the U.S. The Interior Department recorded 53 unauthorized drone incursions during wildfires in 2025, 44 of which directly interfered with or threatened aerial firefighting operations.

As of May, the agency had documented four additional incursions in 2026.

A UFO filmmaker has urged King Charles to back the release of the UK's secret files relating to potential alien encounters.

Mark Christopher Lee - who directed the documentaries The King of UFOs and The Rendlesham UFO - is convinced Britain needs to follow in the footsteps of President Donald Trump's American government by releasing documentation linked to UAPs (unidentified anomalous phenomena) and he wants the monarch to step in.

Lee said: "President Trump’s administration is releasing UFO files, standing up a science advisory council, and treating this as a matter of national importance.

"Britain cannot pretend the sky over Rendlesham Forest [in the UK] and the rest of the United Kingdom is empty.

"The King has spent his life arguing that humanity’s relationship with the Earth matters. Humanity’s relationship with the cosmos matters too. The Crown has survived by adapting. This is the ultimate test."

Lee went on to insist the UK is lagging behind after the Ministry of Defence (MOD) stopped maintaining reports relating to UAPs back in 2009 because officials believed there was no credible threat to the UK - and the filmmaker is convinced the country's position on the matter is becoming untenable as the USA continues to release files relating to mysterious sightings.

He added: "Britain hosted one of the best-documented military UFO cases on Earth at Rendlesham, on what was then a NATO base,.

"Viewers of my Rendlesham film have independently reported orb activity while watching it. That is not a party trick. That is the phenomenon answering back.

"We need a British equivalent of America’s AARO, open archives, and an honest conversation with the public."

Lee concluded: “It does not need to land on the White House lawn or Buckingham Palace. It is already in our skies, our military ranges, our nuclear sites, and - for some of us - our bedrooms."
