Wow. Ciaramella used the old form, the one that did not allow hearsay. That means the entire impeachment was void ab initio, meaning it was legally dead on arrival. The fact that Atkinson then secretly changed the form and backdated it makes it all exponentially worse.

https://x.com/HansMahncke/status/2044841840617087158

Back in 2019, we knew that Atkinson had changed the form, but we didn't KNOW whether Ciaramella had used the new form or the old form. It turns out that he had used the old form - the form which required first hand knowledge. The copy of Ciaramella form made public excluded the first two instruction pages in which the firsthand requirement was stated. While Atkinson subsequently changed the form, it was the earlier form that was submitted (sans the two instruction pages.)

Atkinson's position was that Ciaramella had first hand knowledge of some things. However, the things that he had first hand knowledge of do not appear to have been especially relevant.

Atkinson cited Grassley as authority that secondhand information should be permitted for a whistleblower report. But Atkinson glossed over difference between a non-urgent concern and an urgent concern. This doesn't seem to have been focussed on in discussion. The requirement for firsthand knowledge was reasonable enough for an "urgent" concern.

Another point that hasn't been discussed much. In the Solomon articles in March-April 2019 which led into these discussions, there was discussion of Ukrainian interference in the 2016 election. Trump's contiguous discussion of the CrowdStrike server supports the possibility that Trump was seeking investigation of 2016 election interference - an entirely proper request - as opposed to anticipatory interference in the 2020 election. One of the major misunderstandings of Ukrainian interference in the 2016 is that the interference was initiated by Biden cadres (especially at the Jan 2016 meeting with Ukrainiain prosecutors and Biden cadres while Biden was a leading candidate for nomination) and resulted in the Black Ledger operation that decapitated Paul Manafort as campaign chair in August 2016. The role of Biden cadres in this interference has been clouded by incorrect pointing at Clinton campaign.

There was obviously no way that any of Ciaramella, Wilde or Atkinson could have reasonably been sure that the issues raised by Trump weren't related to past 2016 events, as opposed to still distant 2020 events where Biden's nomination was far from guaranteed.

The issue of Ukrainian interference in the 2016 election surfaced from time to time in the 2019 impeachment hearings, but was ridiculed and shouted down by State Department officials. None of the Republicans or their staff appear to have been well enough informed to focus on the valid issues.

Iran war opens new rifts between Washington, Europe, the Vatican, and Israel

Disputes over Iran, Lebanon, NATO, and diplomatic legitimacy are testing the cohesion of the Western alliance.

The confrontation around Iran has evolved into more than a military escalation. It is now a convergence point for multiple, overlapping crises - strategic, political, and symbolic - that are testing the internal cohesion of the Western alliance.

In a matter of days, tensions have surfaced simultaneously across different arenas: the United States has openly criticized its European allies for what it sees as a lack of support; Italy has recalibrated its position toward Israel following a series of incidents in Lebanon; and an unusually direct confrontation has emerged between Washington and the Vatican, drawing in one of Europe’s key political figures, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Behind the scenes of the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire: Why did Netanyahu, Aoun agree to 10-day truce?

During a security cabinet meeting, Netanyahu was asked what led to the sudden change and Israel’s decision to agree to a ceasefire. “It's a Trump request,” he answered.

US President Donald Trump pressured Israel to agree to a ceasefire in Lebanon after Lebanon’s president clarified to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other senior American officials that such a call would not take place without progress in negotiations between the two countries, according to two sources familiar with the details.

Although the US president posted on Truth Social on Thursday morning that a call between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun would take place, Aoun refused.

As Trump declares truce, Israel reached limit of its force against Hezbollah - analysis

Top IDF commanders have repeatedly made it clear that they do not have the capacity to eliminate Hezbollah solely using military force.

Many in Israel will be furious with US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the impending 10-day ceasefire Trump declared with Hezbollah on Thursday.

But the fact is that Israel had already achieved in this round of war most of what it could militarily.

IDF to maintain positions in southern Lebanon during truce, Israeli official tells 'Post' • Trump invites Netanyahu, Aoun for historic White House talks after separate phone calls

A 10-day ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel will begin at midnight Israel time, US President Donald Trump announced in a Truth Social Post on Thursday.

Trump stated that the ceasefire was reached after separate conversations with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. He also invited Aoun and Netanyahu to the White House for the first direct talks between the leaders of Lebanon and Israel since 1983.

During the ceasefire, the IDF will continue to maintain its positions and areas in southern Lebanon where it is currently deployed, an Israeli official told The Jerusalem Post.

According to Israeli media reports, cabinet ministers were not informed of the ceasefire during a meeting and only learned of it from the media after the meeting ended.

N12 News quoted Netanyahu as saying that Trump asked for the ceasefire, a request to which Netanyahu acquiesced.

Peace between US, Iran, could take six months, officials say - Bloomberg

A peace deal between the United States and Iran could take around six months to be agreed upon, officials from both the Middle East and Europe told Bloomberg.

The officials recommended that the existing ceasefire between the US and Iran be extended, so as to allow for a more suitable timeframe in which to make the deal.

The Strait of Hormuz being opened is a key issue in the deal, the officials said, and Gulf Arab and European leaders want it open as soon as possible, in order to restore the flow of energy through the region, as well as avert a potential global food shortage.

This is a developing story.

Ceasefire agreed between Israel and Lebanon – Trump

A ten-day truce will begin at 5 PM EST (22:00 GMT) on Thursday following talks between the sides, the US president has announced

Published 16 Apr, 2026 16:10 |

US President Donald Trump has announced that a ten-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon has been agreed upon following talks in Washington.

In a post on Truth Social on Thursday, Trump stated the truce would begin at 5 PM EST (22:00 GMT),following what he described as “excellent conversations” with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The talks, held in Washington DC, were thefirst direct meeting between the two nations “in 34 years” andinvolved US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump said, adding thathe had directed US officials to work with both sides toward a “lasting peace.” Trump also claimed that the deal would be his “10th” such achievement.

Trump did not mention Israel’s ongoing war with Hezbollah after its invasion of southern Lebanon in early March, or itsattempt to effectively annex some 15% of the country. Last week, the IDF carried out its largest wave of strikes across Lebanon since the conflict began, pounding central Beirut just hours after the announcement of a two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran.

Israel has killed over 2,000 people and wounded thousands more since March 2, including hundreds of women and children, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry. Around 1.2 million people have been displaced.

In a follow-up post,Trump invited Netanyahu and Aoun to the White House, describing it as the “first meaningful talks” between the two countries since 1983.

Israeli officials reportedly expressed “outrage” after Trump announced the ceasefireahead of the planned Israeli security cabinet call to discuss a truce. Netanyahu told the ministers that the deal would begin “at the request of Trump,” according to Ynet, adding that Israeli forces would remain in their positions in southern Lebanon.

Trump’s announcement comes amid deadly ongoing Israeli attacks on Lebanese civilians. On Wednesday,Netanyahu said he had ordered an expansion of military operations. Multiple strikes on the village of Mayfadoun the same day reportedly left four paramedics dead and six others wounded.Strikes were also reported near one of the last functioning hospitals in southern Lebanon, in the town of Tebnine.

Pentagon misses UAP video deadline. Rep. Luna eyes subpoena

Updated: Apr 16, 2026 / 01:08 PM CDT

A House lawmaker is threatening subpoena action after the Pentagon failed to meet a congressional deadline to turn over dozens of classified UAP videos, saying she is prepared to compel production of the footage if “institutional resistance continues.”

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., chairwoman of the House Oversight Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets, told NewsNation Thursday that the Department of War missed her April 14 deadline to deliver 46 UAP video files she formally requested in a March 31 letter to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Luna said she intends to work directly with Hegseth to secure the footage and described him as a close working partner aligned with President Donald Trump’s directive on UAP disclosure.

She said she is confident cooperation between her office and Pentagon leadership can produce the requested materials.

However, Luna warned that if resistance continues, she is prepared to work with House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer to exercise the committee’s subpoena authority.

She also called for the removal of the unelected official she said was responsible for failing to route her letter to the appropriate authorities within the department.

The 46 videos requested in Luna’s March 31 letter span multiple military branches and locations and include footage of UAP formations captured over Iran, the Persian Gulf, the East China Sea and near U.S. domestic airports.

Among the files requested is footage of an F-16 shooting down a UAP over Lake Huron in February 2023 and multiple incidents documented by MQ-9 drone operators.

Luna’s task force has been investigating UAP disclosure since at least September 2025, when it held a hearing during which whistleblowers testified that the All-Domain Anomaly Resolution

Office, known as AARO, possesses additional video records of potential UAP sightings that have not been publicly released.

“The lack of disclosure regarding the very real threat posed by UAPs in and around U.S. restricted airspace is concerning,” Luna wrote in her March 31 letter.

“The presence of UAPs in and around the sensitive airspaces of U.S. military installations poses a threat to the security of the armed forces and their readiness.”

Luna has also faulted AARO directly, saying the office’s responses when questioned about UAP sightings have been “less than adequate.”

The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform holds broad investigative authority under House Rule X to examine “any matter” at “any time.”

USA Completely Withdraws Troops from Syria

The US has completed the full withdrawal of its troops and equipment from Syria, ending its decade-long military presence in the country.

The last US Army units left the Qasrak base in Hasakah province on April 16 and headed toward Jordan, according to Middle East Eye.

The redeployment across the Jordanian border was chosen for the safety of personnel and to avoid possible attacks by pro-Iranian militias in Iraq.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry stated that the completion of the handover of military facilities reflects the successful integration of Kurdish units into state structures. Damascus is now assuming full responsibility for the fight against terrorism and the protection of its borders.

The troop withdrawal process intensified after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in late 2024 and the rise to power of Ahmed al-Sharaa’s government. In recent months, US forces have also handed over major bases in Al-Tanf and Al-Shaddadi to the Syrian side.

Washington has reportedly approached General Motors and Ford as it seeks to expand military output amid ongoing conflicts

Published 16 Apr, 2026 16:27 |

The Pentagon has approached major US car manufacturers General Motors and Ford about producing weapons and military equipment, the Wall Street Journal has reported, citing sources.

General Motors already supplies military vehicles to the Pentagon through its GM Defense unit, while Ford has no major military contracts.

The discussions reportedly involved senior executives and focused on whether – andhow quickly – civilian factories could be redirected toward producing munitions and other military supplies, as Washington seeks to replenish stockpilesdepleted by the Ukraine conflict and the war on Iran, the outlet wrote on Wednesday.

GE Aerospace and vehicle and machinery maker Oshkosh were also involved in the talks, which began before the US-Israeli war against Iran started on February 28, it added.

Officials have cast thepush as a move to put industry on a “wartime footing,” the outlet noted, invoking World War II-era mobilization, when Detroitautomakers halted car output to produce bombers, aircraft engines and trucks.

The war against Iran has significantly strained US weapons stockpiles. The American military has launched more than 850 Tomahawk cruise missiles during the first four weeks of the campaign. The rate has prompted alarm among some Pentagon officials, the Washington Post reported last month. While the US Department of Wardoes not disclose the exact number of Tomahawks it has, analysis suggests that before Operation Epic Fury, the US Navy had between 4,000 and 4,500 such missiles.

US President Donald Trump has requested a record-breaking military budget of around $1.5 trillion for the 2027 fiscal year, up from nearly $1 trillion this year, according to the administration’s budget outline. The proposal includes more than $1.1 trillion in base defense funding alongside additional allocations tied to ongoing military operations.

The war in Iran is costing the US government roughly $2 billion a day, former congresswomanMarjorie Taylor Greene claimedon X on Thursday. Independent online tracker WarSpend estimates that Washington has spent nearly $48 billion on the conflict since its start.

Burchett: Pentagon’s “just going to delay, delay, delay until they can get everything covered up”

Apr 16, 2026

Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) — Co-chair, Congressional UAP Caucus; Oversight Committee

Ask a Pol asks:

What do you make of the Pentagon breezing through your guys’ April 14th deadline?

Key Burchett:

“They’re just going to delay, delay, delay until they can get everything covered up,” Rep. Tim Burchett exclusively tells Ask a Pol UAP. “It’s just got to come from the top. The President’s just got to say do it. They’ve had 28 days now for them to cover everything up.”

Caught our ear:

Now the Pentagon says they’re working with AARO on disclosure — what do you make of that?

“I don’t trust them as far as I can throw that dome off the Capitol,” Burchett tells us.

NEWS: Moskowitz calls for hearing into missing Los Alamos scientists (& Pentagon disclosure one)

Ask a Pol UAP asks:

Pentagon’s now saying they’re going to go through AARO — the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office — to release what the federal government knows about UFO, according to Liberation Times. Does that make you a little dubious?

Key Moskowitz:

“We now have 10 people, by the way, that are missing or dead dealing with our nuclear program,” Rep. Jared Moskowitz exclusively tells Ask a Pol. “So, I think the Pentagon needs to come clean.”

Do you want to see an investigation into the missing Los Alamos scientists?

“Well, first of all, I think Luna should probably hold a hearing on that,” Moskowitz says. “I think she will. But if the Pentagon doesn’t release this stuff in compliance with Representative Luna’s letter, then I think ultimately we’re going to have to have a hearing on that as well...”

Moderna, Pfizer Press to Toss Bayer’s Covid-Shot Patent Suits

March 31, 2026

Moderna and partners Pfizer and BioNTech urged a judge to dismiss Bayer’s lawsuits accusing their Covid-19 vaccines of infringing a crop-based genetic-engineering patent, arguing the claims are implausible and don’t fit mRNA technology.

Bayer AG’s complaint fails to plausibly allege infringement because most of the asserted patent claims are limited to plant or insecticidal genes—not human mRNA technologies—while the remaining broader claims amount to a “general law of nature,” Moderna Inc. said in a brief filed Monday supporting its motion to dismiss in the US District Court for the District of Delaware.

Steven Spielberg Says His New Alien Film Is Inspired By Real-Life UFO Reports

05:20 16 Apr 2026

Steven Spielberg has revealed that his upcoming sci-fi film Disclosure Day is grounded more in reality than audiences might expect.

Speaking at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, the legendary director said the project is inspired by real-world reports of unidentified aerial phenomena, adding that it contains “more truth than fiction.”

The film marks Spielberg’s return to the alien genre, decades after classics like E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. This time, however, the focus leans more toward modern-day questions around UFO sightings and government secrecy.

Disclosure Day is set for release on 12 June 2026 and features a star-studded cast including Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colman Domingo and Colin Firth.

Early footage shown at CinemaCon hints at a story that blends human drama with mysterious extraterrestrial encounters, with Spielberg teasing an intense viewing experience for audiences.

The director has long expressed an interest in the possibility of alien life, and this latest project appears to explore that idea through a more grounded and thought-provoking lens.

Dead Los Alamos chief's secret UFO files revealed in stunning drop: '100% proof'

13:36 EDT, 16 April 2026 | Updated: 14:57 EDT, 16 April 2026

A senior cybersecurity official at one of America's most secretive nuclear laboratories died several years ago, leaving behind files that an insider claimed reveal classified UFO studies that were never intended to become public.

The documents, described as containing internal memos, scientific reports and historic images, were allegedly discovered among the belongings of the former head of cybersecurity at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).

The lab, located in northern New Mexico, approximately 35 miles northwest of Santa Fe, is linked to UFO lore primarily through its proximity to New Mexico's 'Nuclear Triangle' and reported sightings of 'green fireballs' near atomic sites in the late 1940s.

After the official's death, his son Johnny was sorting through personal effects when he reportedly stumbled upon files labeled with references to 'atmospheric anomalies.' The identities of the deceased staff member and his son are being withheld to protect their privacy and safety.

What initially appeared to be routine paperwork quickly raised alarm when the material appeared to detail classified scientific research into unidentified flying objects.

The discovery was later passed to investigative journalist Jeremy Corbell, who said the contents shocked even him. 'This is a real scientific study at the classified level within our military of UFOs,' he told the Daily Mail.

Corbell, who featured the details in his new documentary Sleeping Dog, set for release on May 12, claimed the material included records of high-level government meetings and scientific studies linked to UFO propulsion systems.

'Los Alamos was always a place where there were elements of the study of the UFO phenomenon… these documents are 100 percent proof that Los Alamos was taking it very seriously,' Corbell said.

The case is now drawing renewed attention to LANL, a laboratory long associated with nuclear weapons development and deep government secrecy.

As a premier nuclear research facility, LANL has been connected to Cold War atmospheric surveillance, classified aerial research and conspiracy theories regarding retrieved technology, including unverified worker claims of alien materials stored in hidden warehouses.

According to Corbell, the discovery began when the cybersecurity chief's son began reviewing stored materials left behind after his father's death.

'This kid, after his dad passed away, starts going through and realizes, "oh, this is some heavy stuff,"' Corbell said.

In Corbell's Sleeping Dog, a film by Michael Lazovsky, he receives a package from Johnny, bursting with files reportedly from LANL.

Johnny told Corbell on the phone that the files included 'official documents from the lab that talk about meetings they had about atmospheric anomalies.'

'There's also some information in there about Russian sightings,' Johnny can be heard saying to Corbell over the phone.

Corbell told the Daily Mail: 'I mean, everything from original Polaroids of very studied UFO cases throughout history, to internal memos and documents of when they have meetings and they're discussing this at a high-level government capacity.'

Corbell shared several pages with the Daily Mail showing what appeared to be mysterious saucer-like craft, crop circles etched across fields and a cylinder-shaped UFO.

There was also a document titled Illustrations and Photos by the Gulf Breeze Witness, which contains dozens of witness sketches and photographic enlargements depicting unidentified flying objects repeatedly seen over the coastal Florida town between 1987 and 1991.

The files pointed to a sustained pattern of sightings rather than isolated incidents.

Franklin Graham making excuses for Trump posting himself as Jesus is one of the worst things I’ve seen.

Trump posted his blasphemous picture with Satan added above him, the original picture had a soldier.

If you search “pictures of Jesus” most of them show Jesus in white with a red robe over his shoulders.

Franklin Graham of all people, who is frequently at the WH and with Trump, should be leading Trump to be a Christian, NOT telling other Christians that Trump did nothing wrong when he committed blasphemy.

Trump knows what he is doing. He knows what he posted. He knows how to manipulate his followers. And he’s not sorry, he never apologized.

Instead he lied, and said he was a doctor, which is also absurd.

Jesus warned about this in Matthew 7: 15-20

“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.”

Pay attention to ACTIONS, not words that tell you what you want to hear.

What everyone got wrong about the Iran-US talks in Islamabad

Despite no immediate deal, the first round signaled something more important.1/3

Published 15 Apr, 2026 20:

Following the talks that took place in Islamabad between Iran and the United States, several experts and commentators were quick to declare the negotiations a failure. However, such assessments are rather unfounded and overlook the complexities of multi-layered diplomatic processes. In such situations, a lack of immediate agreements doesn’t necessarily mean failure.

When negotiations fail, the parties typically resort to more aggressive rhetoric indicating their withdrawal from discussions. However, the public statements of both Iran and the US create room for further contacts, andsuggest the potential for further negotiations and a willingness to institutionalize dialogue.

Pakistan’s position serves as an additional indicator in this situation; rather than distancing itself from the negotiation process, Pakistan has actively reaffirmed its intention to continue mediation efforts. Announcements regarding preparations for a second round of consultations in the near future highlight Islamabad’s desire to maintain its role as a negotiation venue and prevent the erosion of the emerging diplomatic channel.

Despite the high degree of uncertainty, the situation does not warrant excessive optimism. The conflict may escalate again, and a new cycle of confrontation may begin. At the same time, signs of limited alignment between the parties should not be ignored either.

Indeed, both Iran and the US continue to present demands, many of which are rigid and sometimes outright unacceptable or absurd. Yet, this negotiating tactic is commonly employed as a bargaining tool, leaving open the possibility of compromise. Certain official statements indicate a readiness for targeted concessions and discussions around specific de-escalation parameters. For example, US Vice President J.D. Vance noted that Tehran may agree on some sensitive issues, while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas. Araghchi acknowledged the prospect of further consultations and maintaining channels of interaction.

Theongoing diplomatic activity suggests that neither side views the current stage as a definitive rupture; both parties are trying to preserve momentum in the negotiations, even if in a limited way. Tehran’s position remains largely stable and focused on avoiding strategic concessions that could undermine the fundamentals of its political system, including principles tied to the core concept of modern Iranian statehood, the so-called ‘velayat-e faqih’.

It’s notable thateven without evident military parity, the US is interested in a ceasefire. This may be due to the need to take a tactical pause to regroup resources, as well as internal political and economic constraints, including the impact of the protracted conflict on the domestic agenda. Conversely, for Tehran, a ceasefire is a means to solidify the current balance without making long-term commitments.

In this context, the negotiations in Islamabad should be viewed not as a breakthrough toward a comprehensive settlement, but rather as an effort to institutionalize a process of limited de-escalation. The primary aim is to lay the groundwork for a temporary ceasefire rather than achieve sustainable peace, which currently seems unrealistic given the deep ideological and political divides.

As noted earlier,Pakistan plays a crucial rolein this process as a mediator. Islamabad is interested in preventing further escalation, since any potential expansion of the conflict would inevitably impact its strategic and economic interests.Consequently, Pakistan’s efforts are aimed at preserving the negotiation platform and ensuring a minimum level of dialogue between the parties.

It’s notablethat the discussions in Islamabadshifted from the abstract question of whether dialogue was possible to a concrete debate about the parameters of a potential deal– primarily concerning the timeline and format for limiting Iran’s uranium enrichment program. The New York Times reports that the US proposed a lengthy moratorium on uranium enrichment for a period of up to 20 years, while Iran was reportedly willing to discuss a significantly shorter period of around five years.Even if the details have yet to be fully confirmed by both sides, it’simportant that both sides are discussing a possible compromiseinstead of talking about severing contacts. This marks a qualitatively different stage of the negotiation process, one that has nothing in common with failure.

For this reason, overly definitiveassessments of the outcome of the negotiations in Islamabad are inaccurate. Indeed, the parties did not reach an agreement after the first round of talks, both American and Iranian representatives acknowledge this. However, what is more important is that after 21 hours of negotiations, neither side closed the door on further contacts, and Pakistan is already working to organize a second round of consultations in the coming days. Moreover, Vance characterized the American proposals as “the final and best offer” –this implies that a concrete offer is on the table awaiting Tehran’s response.

In diplomatic practice, rigid or even deliberately inflated demands do not indicate the futility of the negotiation process. On the contrary, in the early stages of complex negotiations, parties often adopt hardline positions intentionally so they can later use them as leverage in exchanging concessions. This is particularly evident in Islamabad. The US insists on strict limits on Iran’s nuclear program, the transfer of highly enriched uranium, and free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, Iran is concerned about sanctions, frozen assets, security guarantees, and broader regional de-escalation.In other words, the negotiations are centered around a set of specific demands and counter-demands rather than symbolic gestures, and this signals the beginning of serious bargaining.

In this situation,it’s essential to focus not on the emotional reactionsof external observers but rather on the positions of key Iranian figures directly involved in the decision-making process. In this context, Speaker of the Parliament of Iran Mohammad BagherGhalibaf, who led the Iranian delegation in Islamabad,is particularly notable. The fact that Tehran has sent such a high-level representative to Pakistan, onetasked with tough yet substantive dialogue, is quite telling. Iran’s choice of representativeindicates that it is serious about the negotiationsand views them as a means to safeguard its interests rather than as a superficial show for the media.

In this sense, the talks in Islamabad served a crucial purpose: they shifted the focus away from a confrontational power struggleinto the realm of negotiating terms for mutual deterrence. Of course, this doesn’t mean that a peace deal will be swiftly concluded.Rather, it signifies an attempt to institutionalize limited de-escalationand possibly guide the parties toward a more or less sustainable ceasefire. This process should not be underestimated. If the situation were genuinely deadlocked, the parties wouldn’t be debating the duration of a moratorium, verification mechanisms, the fate of uranium stockpiles, or the sanction regime. In a true stalemate, negotiations come to a halt. In this case, however, we see that the parties are trying to coordinate their positions on complex matters.

Washington’s motivations must also be taken into account.Despite its tough rhetoric, the US is also eager to find a way to withdraw from the current crisis. A prolonged conflict in the Persian Gulf, the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, and instability in theenergy markets impose significant strategic and domestic costs on the US.Thus, as far as we can conclude from its public statements, the White House is not just focused on exerting pressure on Iran, but also wantsto reach an agreement that can be framed as a diplomatic achievement derived from a position of strength. This explains why, despite stringent demands, Washington has not abandoned the negotiation framework.

The main takeaway is that labeling the negotiations in Islamabad a “failure” is methodologically inaccurate. It would be more precise to say that the first round of talks concluded without reaching a final agreement; however, the negotiation process has entered an important phase – the bargaining phase. The parties are no longer discussing the mere possibility of dialogue; they are negotiating over the costs of the future agreement, the duration of restrictions, mutual guarantees, and political dividends. This indicates that despite its fragility, the diplomatic window remains open. And this is the key outcome of the meeting in Islamabad.

Certainly, we shouldn’t harbor illusions about the situation. Given Trump’s character, even the current fragile ceasefire could collapse in an instant. However, it would also be a mistake to underestimate the significance of the Islamabad talks. They offer hope that, even if lasting peace cannot be achieved, a long-term truce may be possible.

Tehran’s goal is clear: to ‘wait Trump out’ and buy time. The history of the Iranian civilization shows that time has always been on its side. And it’s quite possible that the strategy of waiting things out will prove effective once again.

Revealed: Mandelson failed vetting but Foreign Office overruled decision

Peter Mandelson failed his security vetting clearance but the decision was overruled by the Foreign Office to ensure he could take up his post as ambassador to the US, an investigation by the Guardian can reveal.

According to multiple sources, Mandelson was initially denied clearance in late January 2025 after a developed vetting process, a highly confidential background check by security officials.

Keir Starmer had by then announced he would be making Mandelson the UK’s chief diplomat in Washington, posing a dilemma for officials at the Foreign Office, who decided to use a rarely used authority to override the recommendation from security officials.

Mandelson’s failure to secure vetting approval has not previously been publicly revealed, despite intense scrutiny over his appointment and the release by the government of 147 pages of documents supposed to shed light on the case.

Downing Street released a statement late on Thursday confirming the Guardian’s story. It stressed the prime minister had no knowledge that security officials advised Mandelson should not be given clearance, and said responsibility lay with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

“The decision to grant developed vetting to Peter Mandelson against the recommendation of UK Security Vetting [UKSV] was taken by officials in the FCDO,” a government spokesperson said.

“Neither the prime minister, nor any government minister, was aware that Peter Mandelson was granted developed vetting against the advice of UK Security Vetting until earlier this week.

“Once the prime minister was informed he immediately instructed officials to establish the facts about why the developed vetting was granted, in order to enact plans to update the House of Commons.”

Downing Street insiders said he was “furious” about having been kept in the dark about the vetting decision.

Earlier on Thursday, the Conservative leader, Kemi Badenoch, said that if the prime minister had misled the House of Commons over Mandelson’s vetting he “must take responsibility”. Ed Davey, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, said: “If Keir Starmer has misled parliament and lied to the British people, he has to go.”

Further documents are due to be released. However, it can also be revealed that senior government officials have been considering whether to withhold from parliament documents that would reveal Mandelson was not given vetting approval from security officials.

The decision, which rests with the Cabinet Office, has not yet been taken. Any attempt to withhold the documents from the intelligence and security committee (ISC) could amount to a breach of a parliamentary motion to release “all papers relating to Mandelson’s appointment”.

In the statement released on Thursday evening, the Downing Street spokesperson said the government was “committed to complying” with the parliamentary motion, called a humble address. “Any documentation within the scope of the humble address that requires redaction on the basis of national security or international relations will be provided to the ISC. This will include documents provided to the FCDO by UK Security Vetting.”

The revelation that the now former ambassador was not granted clearance by UK UKSV, a division of the Cabinet Office that scrutinises the background of prospective civil servants, will raise further questions about the prime minister’s judgment in appointing him.

Starmer will also be pressed over whether he misled the public in remarks about the security vetting process, which he said had given Mandelson “clearance for the role”.

It is not known who in the Foreign Office made the decision to overrule UKSV.

Sir Olly Robbins, the current permanent secretary in the Foreign Office, was the department’s top civil servant in late January 2025 when the decision was made, having taken up the role earlier that month. The foreign secretary was David Lammy, who is now the deputy prime minister.

Starmer’s then chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney, who resigned in February over his role in appointing Mandelson, could also now be asked whether he had any involvement in, or knowledge or, the decision to overrule UKSV’s denial of clearance.

Friends of McSweeney told the Guardian that he had no knowledge of Mandelson’s developed vetting process or the outcome.

That decision was made weeks before Mandelson was due to take up his post in February 2025. Seven months later, he was sacked over his relationship with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Ministers and officials are now likely to be pressed over whether they have been fully transparent about the process that led to his appointment.

At a press conference in Hastings on 5 February, Starmer responded to a question from a journalist by saying there had been “security vetting, carried out independently by the security services, which is an intensive exercise that gave him [Mandelson] clearance for the role. You have to go through that before you take up the post.” He added: “Clearly both the due diligence and the security vetting need to be looked at again.”

This appeared to partly put the blame for Mandelson’s appointment on the failure of a vetting process which, according to sources, his government had overruled.

As a result of Mandelson’s sacking as US ambassador on 11 September 2025, after the extent of his relationship with Epstein came to light, parliamentary scrutiny mounted. On 16 September, Yvette Cooper, the foreign secretary, and Robbins, her top official, responded to questions over the vetting process with a letter to the foreign affairs select committee.

Yvette Cooper.

Yvette Cooper. Photograph: Andy Rain/EPA

“Peter Mandelson’s security vetting was conducted to the usual standard set for developed vetting in line with established Cabinet Office policy,” the letter said, explaining that the process had been undertaken by UKSV on behalf of the FCDO.

Cooper and Robbins said the process had “concluded with DV clearance being granted by the FCDO in advance of Lord Mandelson taking up post in February”.

What the letter failed to inform parliament was that UKSV had denied Mandelson’s clearance – a recommendation that threatened Starmer having to withdraw a high-profile appointment he had already made public.

UKSV’s vetting decisions are almost always enforced by government departments, but they technically have the authority to override the recommendations. The precise reason that UKSV recommended that Mandelson not receive clearance is now likely to be subject to intense speculation.

US set to launch tariff refund system on April 20

By Tom Hals

April 14 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump's administration plans to launch next Monday the system it will use for issuing refunds to American importers for $166 billion the companies paid in tariffs that ‌the U.S. Supreme Court struck down in February as unlawful.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said, opens new tab in a court filing on Tuesday that it has completed the development of the initial phase of the refund system, known as CAPE. The system will consolidate refunds so importers will receive one electronic payment, with interest when applicable, rather than processing refunds on an entry-by-entry basis.

Agency official Brandon Lord made the declaration, opens new tab in the filing with the New York-based Court of International Trade. The agency disclosed the CAPE launch date in a separate announcement on Friday.

The Supreme Court ruled that Trump overstepped his authority in imposing sweeping global tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, a 1977 law meant for use in national emergencies.

Tuesday's filing said that as of April 9 some 56,497 importers had completed the process to receive electronic refunds for tariffs affected by the court's ruling, an amount totaling $127 billion.

The agency has said it plans to roll out the refund system in ‌phases.

Lord said in his declaration that the agency is considering options for processing refunds on a subset of entries that were subject to $2.9 billion in tariffs. Lord said these normally would require manual processing, which would dramatically increase the workload and divert personnel from the agency's trade operations and enforcement.

After the Supreme Court's decision, importers sued for refunds in the Court of International Trade, which is monitoring the development of the refund system.

More than 330,000 importers paid the tariffs at issue on 53 million shipments of imported goods, according to court documents.

Customs and Border Protection has said the CAPE system will initially process refunds on recently imported goods and straightforward entries.

Many smaller importers feared the cost of the refund process would outweigh the benefits of trying to get reimbursed, forcing some companies to explore creative financing options related to refunds.

Trump denounced the Supreme Court after its ruling and imposed a new temporary global tariff under a different law, though that also has been challenged in court.
