Scientists may have spotted the long-lost Luna 9 spacecraft, an uncrewed Soviet space mission that achieved a historic soft landing on the Moon in 1966 and returned images of its surface.

It operated for just three days, but provided humanity with valuable data about the lunar surface. Despite its historic significance, the exact location of Luna 9 remained a mystery for decades.

The spacecraft's landing site was estimated to be in the Oceanus Procellarum region, but the uncertainty was too large to pinpoint its location.

But now, the researchers in the UK and Japan used an artificial intelligence (AI) to identify several promising candidate locations for the spacecraft.

They used an advanced machine-learning algorithm called YOLO-ETA (You-Only-Look-Once-Extraterrestrial Artifact) to scan images of the lunar surface by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO).

The team, led by Lewis Pinault at University College London, published the results in npj Space Exploration. The researchers hope that their model's predictions could soon be tested using new observations from India's Chandrayaan-2 orbiter.

"The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) Narrow Angle Camera has imaged the Moon continuously since 2009, providing a unique record of both natural and anthropogenic surface features at up to 0.25 m pixel-1 resolution," the new team explains in their study.

"Identifying artificial objects within the resulting vast dataset remains a challenge owing to illumination variability, complex backgrounds, and the small pixel footprints of many targets."

The algorithm detected a cluster of candidate artifacts near 7.03 Celsius N, -64.33 Celsius E, which match the expected dispersal pattern of mission components. The terrain and horizon in the images appear consistent with the flat lunar landscape seen in Luna 9's 1966 photographs.

"These findings identify promising locations for follow-up imaging and demonstrate that compact, edge-deployable machine-learning models can support future orbital surveys of lunar artefacts and surface assets," researtchers wrote in the study.

While the findings are promising, they are not yet definitive proof of Luna 9's location. Further imaging by LRO or future orbiters is needed to confirm the discovery. Overall, the study highlights how AI can be used efficiently in planetary exploration.

Mars Organics Are Hard to Explain Without Life, NASA-Led Study Finds

In 2025, scientists reported the discovery of long-chain organic molecules called alkanes in the ancient mudstones of Mars.

Now, in a new study, a team led by Alexander Pavlov of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center argues that their inferred original abundance of these molecules, before millions of years of radiation destroyed much of them, is difficult to explain by non-biological processes alone.

That does not mean that the detected alkanes are evidence of life on Mars; the conclusion relies on modeling how radiation breaks down organic material over time.

However, the finding does suggest that the origin of these molecules warrants closer inspection.

The interesting thing about the alkanes found in the Martian mudstone is that they could be fragments of long-chain fatty acids, which on Earth are produced largely – but not exclusively – by life.

The initial Curiosity sample showed alkanes at concentrations of around 30 to 50 parts per billion, which isn't particularly high.

Pavlov and his colleagues asked two questions: could there once have been more of them in the stone? And if so, where could they have come from?

The Cumberland mudstone has been sitting on the surface of Mars, exposed to harsh radiation for about 80 million years, which would have slowly broken down any organic material in the rock.

The researchers drew on laboratory radiolysis experiments to estimate how quickly radiation would break down alkane precursors, arriving at a much higher original concentration of 120 to 7,700 parts per million (ppm).

Then, they considered the non-biological deposition and formation mechanisms that could have put them there – processes that include transport from interplanetary dust, meteorites, atmospheric haze fallout, hydrothermal chemistry, and reactions such as serpentinization.

Even when combined, these processes were unable to approach the inferred original abundance of the molecules.

"Our approach has led us to estimate that the Cumberland mudstone conservatively contained 120 to 7,700 ppm of long-chain alkanes and/or fatty acids before exposure to ionizing radiation," the researchers write in their published paper.

"We argue that such high concentrations of long-chain alkanes are inconsistent with a few known abiotic sources of organic molecules on ancient Mars."

The paper is very careful to point out that they are not claiming a definitive detection of life beyond Earth.

There could be non-biological alkane formation pathways on Mars that we don't know about, or something we don't know about how radiation acts on organic molecules on Mars.

Further research is required to fill in these blanks.

It's been well established that Mars hosts many different kinds of organic molecules. The question now is what they are telling us about habitability – or lack thereof.

Mexico joins NASA’s Artemis Program

Mexico has joined the Artemis Program, promoted by the United States Government through NASA, for space exploration, which aims to take people back to the lunar surface.

The accession was announced today at an event led by Foreign Affairs Secretary Marcelo Ebrard Casaubon, attended by Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation Secretary Jorge Arganis Díaz-Leal, and supported by representatives of the Legislative Branch and the National Conference of Governors (Conago), and was welcomed by the U.S. government.

Foreign Minister Ebrard said that the Artemis Program, promoted by the United States, is a sign of the good relationship between Mexico and that country, and that “it had been discussed for several years, but now it is a reality.”

He specified that U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris formally invited Mexico to participate in the program in November.

In this regard, Vice President Harris, via Twitter, expressed her satisfaction today with “Mexico's decision to join the Artemis Accords and conduct responsible and sustainable exploration.”

The foreign minister also stressed that Mexico's participation in the program responds to “a convergence on a series of principles regarding space, sustainability, inclusion, peaceful purposes, and participation in design, technology, and projection, as well as being part of the project.”

He noted that 50 years ago “we were spectators, now we are going to be participants; it is a big step for Mexico.”

Secretary Ebrard stressed that Artemis “symbolizes the values that identify the countries that are going to participate in this project, of gender equality, of protection for all, of a type of egalitarian society [...] it will have an immense cultural impact throughout the world in favor of gender equality.”

The space agencies of the 13 signatory countries are participating in the program. Among the programs being carried out under the Artemis principles is NASA's project to explore the Moon in the near future.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson thanked Foreign Minister Ebrard today for the decision and said, “Mexico joins a growing number of nations that are signatories to the Artemis Accords.

We welcome Mexico's leadership in signing the Accords and working with us to explore space responsibly for the benefit of all.”

For his part, Dr. José Hernández Moreno, a retired NASA astronaut of Mexican origin, expressed his congratulations, saying, “It's great that Mexico is joining the Artemis project, because once again we are going back to the Moon, but this time we are not going to do it as a country [...] we are going to do it as a community.”

Vulcan suffers solid rocket booster problem during USSF-87 launch

United Launch Alliance said an issue affected one of the four solid rocket boosters that helped propel its Vulcan rocket into space Thursday on a mission for the United States Space Force.

Despite the problem the rocket, making only its fourth flight, continued on its planned trajectory, the company said.

The 202-foot-tall (61.6 m) rocket thundered away from pad 41 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at 4:22 a.m. EST (0922 UTC) but less than 30 seconds into the flight, there appeared to be a burn through of one of the nozzles on a Northrop Grumman-built graphite epoxy motor (GEM) 63XL solid rocket boosters (SRBs).

Shortly after, as the rocket performed its pitch over maneuver, the vehicle began to roll in a more pronounced way than is typical for this stage of flight. The Vulcan rocket appeared to counteract the anomaly and the SRBs jettisoned as planned at T+ 1 minute, 37 seconds into the flight.

“We had an observation early during flight on one of the four solid rocket motors, the team is currently reviewing the data,” ULA said in a statement roughly an hour after liftoff. “The booster, upper stage, and spacecraft continued to perform on a nominal trajectory.”

The rocket was carrying the USSF-87 mission. It’s a series of payloads for the U.S. Space Force, highlighted by at least one Geosynchronous Space Situational Awareness Program (GSSAP) satellite, though two may be onboard.

ULA leadership said prior to launch that it would be roughly 10 hours from liftoff until the end of the mission, so it might be Thursday afternoon before an update on the status of the payload is given.

This was ULA’s second national security mission following completion of the Vulcan rocket’s certification in March 2025.

There are several more on the company’s launch manifest for 2026, including a GPS satellite and satellites for the Space Force’s Space Development Agency.

ULA’s plan for 2026 was to launch 16 to 18 missions with Vulcan. The latter vehicle would launch from both coasts.

More SRB challenges

The “observation” noted on one of the SRBs on Thursday morning’s flight marks the second time in just four flights that ULA ran into a similar issue.

A burn through was noted during the second certification launch of Vulcan back on Oct. 4, 2024. ULA and Northrop Grumman went through a series of tests and analysis to address the anomaly, including a hot fire test in Utah.

Ultimately, the U.S. Space Force deemed Vulcan capable to launch national security payloads for it and the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO). The USSF-106 mission on Aug. 12, 2025, went smoothly, giving ULA leadership confidence in their launch vehicle.

“We’ve had a couple of anomalies that we’ve worked through. You all are aware of those. Those are behind us now and so the Vulcan rocket is ready to go,” said John Elbon, the interim CEO of ULA, during a virtual media roundtable on Tuesday.

The work was led by Karen Perez, a postdoctoral researcher at the SETI Institute who was a doctoral student at Columbia University at the time of the research.

"We're looking forward to what follow-up observations might reveal about this pulsar candidate," Perez said in a statement. In particular, she added, the researchers hope to use the pulsar to probe general relativity.

Testing the rules of the universe

General relativity, first proposed by Albert Einstein, proposes that gravity is not a force in nature but a property of how space-time curves.

A nearby pulsar in the Milky Way would let researchers learn about "precision measurements of the space-time around a supermassive black hole," the statement noted.

That's because pulsars rotate so rapidly that they are sensitive to the subtle gravitational pulls of massive neighboring objects, like other stars.

The pulsar's rotation could then, in theory, produce "anomalies" in the pulses of light that it sends toward Earth, said study co-author Slavko Bogdanov, a research scientist at the Columbia Astrophysics Laboratory.

"In addition, when the pulses travel near a very massive object, they may be deflected and experience time delays due to the warping of space-time, as predicted by Einstein's general theory of relativity," Bogdanov added.

Researchers detected the suspected pulsar through Breakthrough Listen, a scientific research program that aims to find signals of civilizations beyond Earth.

The new findings came from the Breakthrough Listen Galactic Center Survey, which, as the name suggests, hunted for signals coming from the center of the Milky Way.

Breakthrough Listen released all of the data publicly, the researchers added, "allowing researchers worldwide to pursue independent analyses and complementary science cases."

Further research is needed to confirm whether the signal really was a pulsar, or if it came from some other exotic radio source.

Born on February 12, 1809, in a humble one-room log cabin on the Kentucky frontier, Abraham Lincoln’s life represents the incredible potential that is uniquely fostered in America. Largely self-taught, he educated himself by reading borrowed books by candlelight after long days of labor on his family’s farm. From those unlikely beginnings emerged a mind of remarkable clarity and depth that would later define his leadership. Through midwestern grit and determination, Lincoln became an accomplished attorney, a State Representative, a Member of Congress, and a brilliant orator, writer, and debater. He was undoubtedly one of the most intelligent men of his age.

Yet with every public triumph came personal tragedy, and his life reflected the complex divisions plaguing the country in the early 19th century. His marriage to Mary Todd brought together a slave-owning family with the man who would eventually bring slavery to an end. While his marriage flourished, the loss of three of their four beloved children left Lincoln in a dark melancholy for the rest of his life. He and his wife bore on their face the scars of their own grief and, eventually, the grief of our entire embattled Nation.

As slavery continued to tear the Republic apart in the 1850s, Lincoln’s opposition to the expansion of slavery quickly spread across the land. He entered the race for the United States Senate, where his legendary debates against pro-slavery Democrat Stephen Douglas made him a nationally known figure. In 1860, the newly founded Republican Party chose him as its standard bearer, and the American people entrusted him with the presidency of the United States.

Shortly following Lincoln’s election as our 16th president, Southern States began to secede from the Union. During the course of four grueling years, President Lincoln led the country through its darkest days and fought tirelessly to preserve our Republic during great trial. He commanded vast armies against the forces of the Confederacy at great cost to human life, issued the Emancipation Proclamation that freed millions from the chains of bondage, and championed the Thirteenth Amendment to expel the scourge of slavery from American soil forever.

Re-elected in triumph in 1864 amid the devastation of civil war, President Lincoln turned to the solemn work of binding up our Nation’s wounds. Armed with resolute courage, he sought to restore the rule of law, heal the divisions of civil strife, and reclaim the enduring American principles of liberty, freedom, and prosperity—ideals that had been tested to their breaking point by years of bloodshed and bitter division. In his crusade to restore the Union and renew its founding promises, he spread a message of reconciliation, working to unite a divided Nation around its most deeply-held values. Tragically, his commitment to justice and peace ultimately cost him his life: Just over a month into his second term, at the age of 56, he was killed by an assassin’s bullet on April 14, 1865.

Europe's most powerful rocket launches for 1st time, carrying 32 Amazon internet satellites to orbit

Europe's new Ariane 6 rocket just notched another milestone.

The most powerful version of the Ariane 6 — known as the 64, because it sports four strap-on solid rocket boosters — lifted off for the first time ever today (Feb. 12).

The Ariane 64 launched from Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana at 11:45 a.m. EST (1645 GMT; 1:45 p.m. local time in Kourou), carrying 32 satellites aloft for the Amazon Leo broadband constellation.

If everything goes according to plan, all of the spacecraft will be deployed in low Earth orbit (LEO) by one hour and 54 minutes after liftoff.

Today's launch was the sixth overall for the Ariane 6, a heavy lifter that's operated by the France-based company Arianespace.

The 203-foot-tall (62-meter-tall) rocket — the successor to the recently retired Ariane 5 — debuted with a test flight in July 2024 and aced four operational missions last year.

However, all of those previous missions featured the Ariane 62, which has two solid rocket boosters. Today's flight was the first of the 64 version, which can haul more than 20 metric tons of payload to LEO — about twice as much as the 62.

It was also the first Ariane 6 launch for a commercial customer — the others lofted government-operated spacecraft — and the first to feature the rocket's jumbo 65-foot-long (20-meter-long) payload fairing.

Amazon Leo, previously known as Project Kuiper, is Amazon's version of SpaceX's Starlink broadband megaconstellation.

Amazon Leo will eventually consist of more than 3,200 satellites, which will reach orbit on more than 80 launches performed by a variety of rockets — SpaceX's Falcon 9, United Launch Alliance's Atlas V and Vulcan Centaur, Blue Origin's New Glenn and the Ariane 6.

Today's launch was the eighth in the Amazon Leo buildout phase (not counting an October 2023 mission that lofted two prototype satellites). Those eight flights have sent 185 spacecraft to the final frontier.

China aces test of next-gen lunar capsule and rocket in effort to land humans on moon before NASA (video)

China just took another step toward landing astronauts on the moon.

On Wednesday (Feb. 11) local time, the nation conducted a low-altitude abort test of its next-gen Mengzhou ("Dream Vessel") capsule, which could carry crews to the moon as soon as 2030.

Mengzhou performed as designed during the test, which lifted off from the Wenchang Space Launch Site on Hainan Island.

The capsule successfully maneuvered itself away from its Long March 10 rocket and splashed down in the ocean under parachutes, showcasing capabilities that would be needed in the event of a launch emergency.

The Long March 10 is a key piece of China's moon plans as well: It's a new heavy lifter that will launch the nation's astronauts to Earth's nearest neighbor. And the rocket aced an important trial of its own on Wednesday.

The Long March 10's first stage is designed to be reusable, like that of SpaceX's workhorse Falcon 9 rocket. On Wednesday, the booster guided itself to a powered, vertical splashdown in the ocean after Mengzhou went its separate way.

The Long March 10 is still in development, and Wednesday's flight did not come close to reaching orbit. But the rocket's splashdown success was still a major milestone on the road to recovery and reuse.

China has also made progress recently with its crewed lunar lander, a vehicle named Lanyue. As a result, many space experts give the nation a real chance of winning the crewed race back to the lunar surface.

NASA aims to put boots on the moon in 2028 on the Artemis 3 mission, which will use a modified version of SpaceX's Starship vehicle as its lander. But it's unclear if the mission will be able to meet that timeline.

A lot depends, for example, on the success of Artemis 2, a crewed trip around the moon that could launch as soon as next month. Artemis 2 will employ NASA's Space Launch System rocket and Orion capsule but will not incorporate Starship.

Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman delivered opening remarks for the U.S. Space Force Delta 13 Commandant’s Lecture Series at Johns Hopkins University in Washington, D.C.,

Feb. 4. Space Delta 13, Detachment 3, manages the Space Force Joint Professional Military Education Program, which prepares Guardians to lead within the space warfighting domain.

The series is composed of the three most recent Air Force and Space Force service chiefs who mentor students attending both intermediate and senior level professional military education. Saltzman spoke about his experiences as CSO as well as the history of the service branch.

Col. Alison Gonzalez, commander of Space Delta 13, and Col. Kirk Johnson, commandant of Space Delta 13, Detachment 3, were also present for the lecture, lending support for the series that will continue throughout the month.

The general touched on topics such as the importance of controlling the space warfighting domain, readiness and response, innovation, cyber and space battle capabilities and predictions, along with views and ideas for students to consider.

Students had the opportunity to ask questions and receive insight about the chief of space operations’ tasks, responsibilities and goals. Saltzman ended his lecture by congratulating the students and thanking them for their dedicated service.

“It takes dedicated training, education, and experience centered on warfare in the domain in order to be able to build organizations that can control it,” Saltzman said.

Following the general’s visit, the students gained a broader understanding of the future of the space domain and the direct impact that they have on the Space Force mission.

Air Force, Space Force senior enlisted advisors emphasize quality of life’s importance in national defense

The senior enlisted advisors of the Air Force and Space Force reminded senators Feb. 11 that preserving – and improving – quality of life for military personnel is just as essential in defending the nation as high-tech weaponry and tactics.

“Sixth-generation platforms need Airmen who have a sixth-generation quality of life,” Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force David R. Wolfe, told a Senate Armed Services Subcommittee.

“People and platforms are not competing variables; they are two parts of the same lethality equation. If one is weak, the entire system fails,” he said.

Wolfe appeared before the Armed Services Personnel Subcommittee joined by Chief Master Sgt. of the Space Force John F. Bentivegna, as well as senior enlisted advisors from the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The hearing was the latest installment in an annual ritual in which lawmakers gain insights and information from the military’s senior enlisted leaders. As in past hearings, similar topics emerged, including the status of housing and the battle to eliminate mold.

There were questions as well about the availability – and quality – of childcare, efforts to eliminate and combat sexual abuse, and how quality of life impacts recruiting and retention, among other topics.

Also important, the enlisted leaders said, was ensuring a living wage and uninterrupted pay.

While thanking Congress for providing a recent bump in pay, Bentivegna said, “we must continue to ensure compensation remains responsive to the real-market conditions our Guardians encounter.

“Beyond direct compensation, we know that the well-being of our Guardians is paramount to readiness. Access to affordable childcare and food security, for example, are essential to quality of life,” he said.

While echoing the senior enlisted advisors on many points, Bentivegna also noted the importance of food security and efforts under current law to help personnel have access to and afford enough food.

“To continue this positive trend, both quality of life and quality of service challenges must remain our combined focus,” he said.

“We must continue to invest in flexible solutions to strengthen licensing portability for spouses and increase telehealth service access for members and our families.”

Wolfe, Bentivegna along with the other enlisted advisors all agreed that there is a direct and crucial link between readiness and ensuring quality of life for active-duty personnel and their families.

Airmen and Guardians were described as sophisticated and advanced weapon systems.

“Like any advanced system, it requires precise maintenance to function under pressure,” Wolfe told senators.

“This maintenance is measured in the stability of their family, education, spousal employment, the quality of their housing, and their access to care.

If our Airmen are distracted by family instability or financial hardship, their performance degrades. In our profession, degraded performance can mean mission failure and lives lost.”

The enlisted leaders agreed that although progress has been made on some issues, including the state of housing and barracks, they acknowledged that more work must be done.

Wolfe told senators his goal was to provide them “an honest accounting of where we are succeeding, where we are facing challenges, and where we require your support.”

Progress has been realized to add capacity for childcare, he said, noting that 17 of 35 military construction requirements have been funded.

That effort will reduce “the projected childcare space shortfall by over 60% when complete. However, despite this work, nearly 2,600 children remain on the unmet need waitlist,” he said.

In an effort to improve substandard housing and especially remove mold from buildings, Wolfe said the Air Force has invested $1.1 billion in the last four years to attack those longstanding problems.

To date, 149 projects have received money with another 31 scheduled to collect funding this year.

Additionally, both the Air Force and Space Force have strengthened the services’ Tenant Bill of Rights and mechanisms for resolving disputes with landlords.

While the 2-hour hearing was polite, senators directed a number of questions about efforts to reduce the waiting list at childcare centers and to improve mental health and reduce suicides.

Wolfe and Bentivegna said there has been progress on making childcare available thanks in part to additional funding Congress provided.

But they acknowledged more must be done on that issue as well as on ensuring there are sufficient tools to reduce suicides and mental health services available to any Airman or Guardian who needs it.

Director-General of the Syria Coroner’s Office Hossein Noufel [2016] disclosed that the body organs of thousands of Syrian civilians have been sold in the international black markets over the past six years.

Local sources in Idlib province told al-Akhbar newspaper that during the past two weeks, 15 people have been kidnapped from different districts, most of them children.

Also, social media activists have released tens of messages and warned the Idlib residents of the possibility of abduction of their children and trafficking of their body organs by the terrorist groups, saying that most of the kidnapped children have been transferred to Turkey.

Local sources in several districts of Idlib have reported that over 10 children have been abducted in different parts of the province, including Kafarouma, Jidar Bekalfoun, Atma, Jisr al-Shaqour and al-Fayqa by the militants.

Also, a local source in Sarmada town North of Idlib said that “a number of militants driving a white van abducted a 10-year-old child but they faced the residents’ resistance and were arrested but sources said that they were freed from Fatah al-Sham (formerly known as al-Nusra) prison the same day”.

Iran denies 14-year-old detainee access to asthma medication, family says

A 14-year-old Turkmen protester arrested in the northeastern city of Gonbad-e Kavus is under psychological pressure in custody and has been denied full and regular access to his asthma medication, sources close to his family told Iran International.

Eiltay Akhoundi was detained on Friday, January 9, 2026, in Gonbad-e Kavus. After being held for three days in a detention facility run by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ intelligence unit, he was transferred to the Juvenile Correction and Rehabilitation Center in Gorgan.

The Trump administration covertly sent thousands of Starlink satellite internet terminals into Iran following a deadly crackdown on demonstrations and sweeping internet shutdowns, The Wall Street Journal reported citing US officials.

Roughly 6,000 terminals were smuggled into the country after Iranian authorities suppressed unrest in January by killing thousands of protesters and restricting connectivity, marking the first time Washington has directly sent Starlink kits into Iran, the report said.

The State Department had purchased nearly 7,000 terminals in prior months — most in January — to help anti-government activists bypass internet blackouts, officials said, adding that some funding was redirected from other internet freedom programs to finance the purchases.

President Donald Trump was aware of the deliveries, officials said, though it was unclear whether he or another official directly approved the operation.

Pentagon let CBP use anti-drone laser before FAA closed El Paso airspace: Report

The Pentagon allowed U.S. Customs and Border Protection to use an anti-drone laser earlier this week, leading the Federal Aviation Administration to suddenly close the airspace over El Paso, Texas, on Wednesday, according to two people familiar with the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive details.

The confusing arc of events began as the FAA announced it was shutting down all flight traffic over the city on the U.S.-Mexico border for 10 days, stranding some travelers, but the closure ended up only lasting a few hours.

The Trump administration said it stemmed from the FAA and Pentagon working to halt an incursion by Mexican cartel drones, which are not uncommon along the southern border.

One of the people said the laser was deployed near Fort Bliss without coordinating with the FAA, which decided then to close the airspace to ensure commercial air safety.

Others familiar with the matter said the technology was used despite a meeting scheduled for later this month between the Pentagon and the FAA to discuss the issue.

While the restrictions were short-lived in the city of nearly 700,000 people, it is unusual for an entire airport to shut down even for a short time.

Stranded travelers with luggage lined up at airline ticket counters and car rental desks before the order was lifted.

Normal flights resumed after seven arrivals and seven departures were canceled. Some medical evacuation flights also had to be rerouted.

Jorge Rueda, 20, and Yamilexi Meza, 21, of Las Cruces, New Mexico, had their morning flight to Portland, Oregon, canceled, so they were losing part of their Valentine’s Day weekend trip.

Rueda said he was glad that “10 days turned into two hours.” They were booked on an evening flight out of El Paso.

A troubling lack of coordination

The investigation into last year’s midair collision near Washington, D.C., between an airliner and Army helicopter that killed 67 people highlighted how the FAA and Pentagon have not always worked well together.

The National Transportation Safety Board said the FAA and the Army did not share safety data with each other about the alarming number of close calls around Reagan National Airport and failed to address the risks.

Democratic Sen. Tammy Duckworth of Illinois, a former Army helicopter pilot who serves on committees focused on aviation and the armed services, said the issue Wednesday was the latest example of “the lack of coordination that’s endemic in this Trump administration.”

Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said he would request a briefing from the FAA on the incident.

Rep. Veronica Escobar, a Democrat whose district includes El Paso, said neither her office nor local officials received any advance notice of the closure. After it was lifted, she said “the information coming from the federal government does not add up.”

“I believe the FAA owes the community and the country an explanation as to why this happened so suddenly and abruptly and was lifted so suddenly and abruptly,” Escobar said at a news conference.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said earlier that the airspace was closed as the Defense Department and the FAA halted an incursion by Mexican cartel drones and “the threat has been neutralized.”

Officials at the Department of Homeland Security, FAA and Department of Transportation did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

A Trump administration official insisted the agencies were in lockstep to protect national security and pointed to Duffy’s statement. The Pentagon said it had nothing to add to its statement that largely mirrored Duffy’s.

Cross-border drone activity is not new

Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales, whose congressional district covers an area that stretches about 800 miles (1,300 kilometers) along Texas’ border with Mexico, said cartel drone sightings are common.

“For any of us who live and work along the border, daily drone incursions by criminal organizations is everyday life for us. It’s a Wednesday for us,” Gonzales said.

Eileen Gu garners backlash for commenting on Trump’s statement while representing China

American-born Team China Olympic skier Eileen Gu came under immense scrutiny on social media this week aftermaking comments about President Donald Trump’s recent criticism of U.S. Olympian Hunter Hess.

Gu, who was born in San Francisco, is the highest-paid Winter Olympic athlete in the world, making an estimated $23 million in 2025 alone in partnerships with Chinese companies, including the Bank of China, and western companies. Gu has said she represents China for her mother, who was born there.

Gu has never spoken out against China’s alleged human rights abuses, including the nation’s alleged systematic campaign of repressionagainst Uyghurs and other predominantly Muslim ethnic minorities in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

However, Gu has commented on Trump’s criticism of Hess for expressing “mixed emotions” about representing the U.S. in Milan Cortina.

“I’m sorry that the headline that is eclipsing the Olympics has to be something so unrelated to the spirit of the Games. It really runs contrary to everything the Olympics should be,” Gu told reporters Monday.

“The whole point of sport is to bring people together. … One of the very few common languages, that of the human body, that of the human spirit, the competitive spirit, the capacity to break not only records, but especially in our sport, literally the human limit. How wonderful is that?”

Gu also claimed she had been “caught in the crossfire” herself.

“As someone who has got caught in the crossfire before, I feel sorry for the athletes,” Gu said. “I hope that they can ski to their very best.”

Gu’s comments have incited backlash on social media, with many critics pointing out that Gu has never spoken out against China for its alleged human rights violations.

Former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedomblasted Gu in a lengthy X post,calling her a “traitor.”

“Eileen Gu is a traitor. She was born in America, raised in America, lives in America, and chose to compete against her own country for the worst human rights abuser on the planet, China. She built her fame in a free country, then chose to represent an authoritarian regime while cashing in on endorsements linked by watchdog groups to mass detention and forced labor camps. When human rights come up, she disappears,” Kanter wrote.

“That’s not neutrality. That’s a choice. She chose to play for a country responsible for the deaths of tens of millions of its own people and that is running concentration camps right now, instead of the country where she was born and given opportunity.”

Hudson Institute senior fellow Michael Sobolik also pointed out Gu’s silence on China’s alleged persecution of Uyghurs and the political imprisonment of individuals who oppose Xi Jinping.

“Listen, it’s fine for athletes to criticize the U.S. president. It also isn’t that interesting because it happens all the time.What’s interesting about this story … is that Eileen Gu is an American skier competing for China. No mention about whether the CCP’s genocide of Uyghurs ‘runs contrary to everything the Olympics should be.’ No criticism of Xi Jinping for the imprisonment of Jimmy Lai, Pastor Ezra Jin, Gulshan Abbas, or China’s many other political prisoners,” Sobolik wrote on X.

“If you criticize America but won’t say a word about the CCP, that says a lot about you. If you’re an American athlete that leverages the freedom this country has given you to represent an authoritarian regime, that says even more.”

Republican communications specialist Matt Whitlock echoed similar criticism of Gu in an X post.

“Can’t imagine a worse voice on this topic than an athlete who threw away her American citizenship for Chinese Communist Party endorsement deals. Does Eileen Gu have any criticism for Xi Jinping for genocide, slavery, and arresting dissenters?” Whitlock wrote.

Several other X users spoke out against Gu.

Trump has been one of the most discussed figures at this year’s Winter Olympics, and several athletes have made suggestive criticisms of his handling of the U.S., including Hess.

Trump made a scathing post on social media, calling Hess a “real loser.”

“U.S. Olympic Skier, Hunter Hess, a real Loser, says he doesn’t represent his Country in the current Winter Olympics,” he wrote.

“If that’s the case, he shouldn’t have tried out for the Team, and it’s too bad he’s on it. Very hard to root for someone like this. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Hess originally said of representing the U.S., “It brings up mixed emotions to represent the U.S. right now, I think. It’s a little hard. There’s obviously a lot going on that I’m not the biggest fan of, and I think a lot of people aren’t.

“I think, for me, it’s more I’m representing my friends and family back home, the people that represented it before me, all the things that I believe are good about the U.S. If it aligns with my moral values, I feel like I’m representing it. Just because I’m wearing the flag doesn’t mean I represent everything that’s going on in the U.S.

“I just kind of want to do it for my friends and my family and the people that support me getting here.”

TMZ on Thursday revealed new footage that has reportedly “landed on the FBI’s radar” amid the ongoing search for Nancy Guthrie.

Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC’s Savannah Guthrie, has been missing for over a week. Not long after her family reported her missing, investigators declared that she had not left her home willing, and the case has since been treated as an abduction. The FBI has also received multiple ransom notes demanding payment for Nancy’s return.One of those notes included personal details about the contents of Nancy’s home.

On Tuesday, the FBI released footageof a “potential suspect” walking up to Nancy’s front door. The individual wore a mask and dark clothing.

Two days later, TMZ founder Harvey Levinrevealed that the FBI obtained new footage that could be connectedto Nancy’s disappearance.The clip, taken near a residence five miles from her home, showed a man wearing a backpack and holding another one. The man appears to be trying to access the backyard of a home.The backpack in his hand, Levin noted, featured a distinct detailalso present on the backpack of the potential suspect seen in front of Nancy’s home.

“The backpack that he’s holding has reflective stripes,” Levin said, “similar to the backpack that the kidnapper was wearing at Nancy’s door. It’s unclear from the video exactly where those reflective stripes are located, but they are reflective stripes. And we know, and reported yesterday, that this is a Walmart backpack, which is fairly common.”

After failing to gain entry into the backyard, the man walked away.

Levin also pointed out the fact that this occurred at 1:53 a.m. The footage from Nancy’s home was captured at 2:12 — just 19 minutes later. He continued:

In 2021, the family of a hospitalized first responder sought a court order directing Dr. Bowden, or a nurse under her supervision, to administer Ivermectin to the patient, who was on a ventilator and in a medically induced coma due to severe COVID-19 complications. A state district court granted the order. However, shortly before

Dr. Bowden's nurse was set to arrive at the hospital, an appeals court blocked the district court's order. Dr. Bowden was not aware of this stay. Dr. Bowden continued efforts to prescribe Ivermectin, and when the nurse

appeared at the hospital, hospital staff refused entry and law enforcement was called However, despite acting in good faith to provide medical care to a potentially dying patient at the request of the patient's family-and while under the assumption that she was acting in full accordance with the law-the Texas Medical Board issued an administrative penalty and public reprimand of Dr. Bowden. Dr. Bowden has now sued the TMB to reverse the reprimand. Attorney General Paxton is not only declining to represent TMB in the case, but he has now filed an intervention in the case in support of Dr. Bowden. Further, Attorney General

Paxton-in support of Mary Talley Bowdenis also declining to represent TMB in another case brought by Dr.

Bowden. "I will not stand by as Dr. Bowden has her Constitutional rights trampled and ability to serve her patients impeded with an illegal reprimand," said Attorney General Paxton. "Dr. Bowden has been a champion for health freedom, selflessly served her patients, and acted in full accordance with the law. That's why I've filed this intervention in support of Dr. Bowden and to ensure administrative agencies don't violate the rights of

licensed professionals in Texas." The intervention notes that TMB's reprimand was done with no consideration of medical expert testimony, ignored the fact that Dr. Bowden was acting in reliance upon both a court order and advice of counsel, and

ignored due process during the hearing on the reprimand.

Gail Slatercame into the administration as a part of the JD Vance network(Peter Thiel, Palantir, etc.), and it looks likethat same Vance network stood asideand watched Larry Ellison leverage his position to see her removed.

Slater was a solid MAGA voice in a critical Antitrust positionagainst the interests of Big Tech and Big Corp. However, I said on Christmas Day 2024 –we were likely to be very disappointed by the influence of Big Tech/Big Corp in the White House{SEE HERE}.
