Why has a precision strike military drone been hovering over the north coast?

A high‑powered military strike drone has been hovering over the north coast this week.

The activity was spotted on Flight Radar only a few miles off the coast of Wick and Thurso as the high-tech Protector RG Mk 1 aircraft took flight for testing.

It was also seen flying directly over the northern Highlands, near areas such as John o’ Groats and Thurso.

According to the RAF, the Protector is a highly advanced remotely piloted aircraft.

It has long endurance and precision‑strike capabilities to support missions including surveillance, search and rescue, and armed operations alongside NATO and US forces.

The aircraft carries Brimstone precision‑guided missiles and 500lb Paveway laser‑guided bombs.

It is also able to operate at an altitude of up to 40,000ft with for more than 30 hours at a time.

The drone can also be tasked with supporting anti-terrorism operations and assisting HM Coastguard with search and rescue missions.

But why was this aircraft seen over the north‑east of Scotland?

In February last year the Ministry of Defence announced they were conducting flight testing after adding four new Protector drones to their arsenal.

The RAF say the flight was not part of the ongoing Operation Agile Warrior wargames, but a separate trial.

An RAF spokesperson said: “Protector has been conducting routine trials; this is not linked to Agile Warrior.

“Testing took place at Holbeach Range in Lincolnshire in December and the Cape Wrath Range in Scotland today.”

FlightRadar shows the drone flew from RAF Waddington and returned there last night.

Two aircraft from RAF Lossiemouth are currently stationed at a British base in Cyprus.

The base was recently hit by an Iranian drone strike.

UK mobilizes lawyers to keep report on Gatwick 'drone' chaos under wraps

Exclusive The UK's Department for Transport (DfT) is assembling government lawyers to fight the Information Commissioner's decision that it must release a document summarizing the lessons from the 2018 Gatwick drone chaos.

Government sources confirmed the development to The Register this week – the latest in a series of attempts made by the DfT to prevent the "Lessons Report" document from being released in full.

This incident review document is likely to provide greater detail about what exactly happened during the 2018 disruption at London Gatwick Airport, which prevented around 800 flights from taking off, affecting around 120,000 passengers.

Officials blamed the situation on drone sightings, although experts disagree.

The DfT has also allegedly attempted to conceal the document's existence, despite requests made under Freedom of Information laws explicitly seeking its release.

Ian Hudson is one of the few drone experts committed to uncovering further details about the Gatwick incident, and he has filed hundreds of these requests since 2018, including those that revealed the document's existence.

Hudson has fought for the document's release since May 2024. In responding to one of his requests in July 2024, Hudson believes the DfT tried to conceal the document.

The response ignored parts of the request pertaining to the Lessons Report, only answering other questions by saying the information was already in the public domain.

Follow-up requests made later that year revealed that the DfT had five versions of the Lessons Report document. However, the department refused to release it based on national security grounds and upheld this decision following an internal review.

"Specifically, these documents include structures, processes, and actions taken by us as a government in response to a drone incursion at a UK airfield which, if released into the public domain, would be likely to assist an assailant in harming critical national infrastructure, possibly leading to a significant loss of life," the DfT wrote. "Thus, it has been assessed that the release of these documents poses a national security concern."

Hudson engaged the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) to fight his corner, and on October 20, 2025, the DfT released what it claimed was the document in question [PDF].

However, everything of importance, except the information already in the public domain, was completely redacted.

The ICO examined the DfT's response and published an official decision notice on February 2, 2026, ruling that the government's attempt to apply the national security exemption, preventing the document's release, was not valid, and that it must finally unredact it, for the most part.

After consulting with the DfT on the matter, John Edwards, the Information Commissioner, was ultimately unconvinced that the section 24(1) national security exemption applied, and after reviewing the redacted content, ruled that it was "unlikely" to lead to security issues.

Reporting the decision, senior case officer Samantha Coward said Edwards deemed the information "high level" and struggled to see how it would endanger the UK.

Edwards also decided that the age of the redacted information is a factor. The technology behind drones and the way in which airports and law enforcement detect them "will have significantly moved on since 2018. It is constantly evolving," he believes.

The ICO only sided with the DfT on its section 23(1) defense, and agreed that the names of three national security bodies that appear in the report must remain redacted. Everything else must be released.

Given the DfT's plans to appeal, which the ICO also told The Register was going ahead, the case will now be overseen by the Government Legal Department and head to the General Regulatory Chamber first-tier tribunal (FTT).

Neither the ICO nor DfT wished to provide any further comment.

The great drone debate

The government and airport officials have maintained that Gatwick Airport's runway was closed for 33 hours between December 19 and 21, 2018, because of multiple drone sightings, which began on the evening of the first day. The incident was named Operation Trebor.

Reports at the time suggested there were at least 50 sightings in the first 24 hours, while follow-up testimony from Sussex Police confirmed there were 109 credible sightings in total.

However, numerous sources have since cast doubt over whether there was a drone at all, and whether a drone could even be piloted in the weather conditions at the time.

The BBC has been accused of mistranslating remarks by Pete Hegseth about the conflict with Iran, after a speech was altered in a way that suggested the United States was targeting the Iranian “people”.

BBC Persian, which broadcasts to audiences inside Iran, translated comments by the US defence secretary as saying Washington was bringing death to the Iranian “people”.

However, Mr Hegseth had in fact referred to the Iranian “regime” as the target.

The US attack on an Iranian ship returning from a naval exercise hosted by India was a blatant breach of international maritime norms, former Indian diplomat Kanwal Sibal has told RT.

A US submarine sank Iranian Navy frigate the IRIS Dena on Monday, 40 nautical miles off the city of Galle in southwestern Sri Lanka. At least 87 people were killed in the attack. The Sri Lankan Navy and Air Force, with assistance from the Indian Navy, conducted a major rescue operation, saving 32 sailors.

Attacking the unarmed ship returning from the naval exercise in the Indian Ocean was “unnecessary,” former Indian Foreign Secretary Sibal told RT.

“They [the US] were aware the ship was there. They had the plane capable of surveillance. And then they position themself at a spot to make sure the frigate was sunk. It is nothing to boast about,” he said. “If they wanted to attack it, they could have done it when it was close to Iran where the war is taking place,” Sibal said.

India had invited a host of countries, including the US and Iran, for its biennial MILAN naval exercise. The US Navy participated in the drills with a P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft (MPRA) from Patrol Squadron, according to an official statement.

Sibal said ships do not come armed for the exercises. “So, it is not as if the Iranian ship was armed to the teeth. It is a bit embarrassing for India since we were the hosts [of the naval exercises],” he said.

Sri Lanka takes custody of second Iranian ship after rescuing crew

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said the island nation is neutral in the US-Israeli war on Tehran, but that humanity must prevail

Sri Lanka says it has taken custody of a second Iranian ship and rescued its 208 crew members, a day after the US sank another Iranian vessel off the island nation’s coast in an attack which killed at least 87 sailors.

The Sri Lankan Navy helped offload sailors from the second ship, the IRIS Bushehr, which had requested port entry due to engine trouble, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake told reporters on Thursday.

Like the sunken IRIS Dena, the IRIS Bushehr had also participated in a naval exercise hosted by India in February.

Dissanayake said the Sri Lankan Navy decided to formally take charge of the IRIS Bushehr and its crew after discussions with the relevant authorities, diplomatic missions, and the ship’s captain.

While Colombo is neutral in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, triggered by US-Israeli strikes on Iran, it will not allow its territory to be used by any nation in conflict, Dissanayake asserted.

Moulton brought Gomes da Silva to the State of the Union address Feb. 24 as his guest in a highly publicized trip announced earlier in the month. Moulton had posted on social media thathe had to allow Gomes da Silva to hide in his office after leaving the speech early due to social media posts about him by the Department of Homeland Security(DHS).

A spokesperson for Congressman Moulton told CBS News the decision to escort Gomes da Silva out of the House gallery was made “out of an abundance of caution” due to DHS “targeting and harassing Marcelo.”

In an appearance on MSNOW following the address,Moulton called Gomes da Silva a “great American,” a “patriot,” and “a reminder of what courage looks like.”

“We all know Marcelo because of his tragic immigration story where he was thrown in a detention facility for days on end, sleeping on a concrete floor and not even given a Bible… and yet throughout that time he insisted on helping others, [was] more focused on translating for other detainees and helping them contact their families than even his own safety,” Moulton said.

“He wanted to come here and confront not just Donald Trump at the State of the Union, but his MAGA Republican enablers, who are my colleagues here in the House of Representatives, and he did that. He put a human face on this immigration tragedy and what I think so many colleagues saw is not just an immigrant, but a great American, a great young American, an amazing patriot, someone whose courage we should all emulate in these challenging times,” he said.

Following his visit to Capitol Hill, Gomes da Silva recently testified on Beacon Hill in support of proposed legislation to ban ICE agents from making civil immigration arrests in state courthouses and on other state-owned property.The bill would also ban sheriff’s departments from entering into any new 287(g) agreements in Massachusetts.

“It’s very important to note that a lot of kids that are growing up in our community now are going to build some type of anger not towards ICE itself but towards anyone they deem to be working with them. We should note that a lot of people are really nervous and scared about police officers and a lot of people don’t want to go off to work. I think it’s important for our community to go out and be able to build a better economy and work,” Gomes da Silva said while testifying before the House Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security on the Protect Act.

Gomes da Silva was held for nearly a week at ICE Boston’s Burlington facility back in May after agents detained him while he was driving his father’s car. ICE had been searching for da Silva’s father — a habitual traffic offender via speeding violations — on behalf of local law enforcement when they took him into custody.

Both Moulton and da Silva have claimed he was treated inhumanely during his detainment, saying he was “denied basic necessities, including access to a shower and a bed to sleep in.”

Moulton conducted an oversight tour of the ICE Burlington facility back in Dec. to follow up on a previous tour he made earlier in 2025. He told reporters following his Dec. visit that “the abuses of ICE need to be prosecuted. Not just defunded — prosecuted. They need to be held accountable to the law that they claim to enforce.”

ICE Boston says Moulton’s and Gomes da Silva’s claims are untrue.

The situation sparked a highly publicized feud between Moulton and Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons, who called Moulton’s words “disgusting” and “pure political theater.”

Da Silva was reportedly in the U.S. on a student visa that had expired unbeknownst to him when he was taken into custody by ICE. An immigration judge later granted da Silva a $2,000 bond after determining he was not a danger to the public.

Following his release, Gomes da Silva received a wave of sympathetic media coverage and was invited by Gov. Maura Healey to tour her office at the State House.

Gomes da Silva responded to a request for comment by the Herald through his lawyer.

“I would like to respond to the Boston Herald’s irresponsible and outrageous reporting. I want to be clear: I have never assaulted anyone. I have never been contacted by the police about any accusations of assault,” Gomes da Silva said. “I only learned about these reports that allegedly include my name in them through the media. I have never seen these alleged reports. My attorney has since requested these alleged reports and was denied.”

A Moulton spokesman has told the Herald, “According to our review, Marcelo has never been charged with a crime.”

The Herald is appealing both the Milford Juvenile Court and the Milford Police’s denial of releasing Gomes da Silva’s background on the ground Moulton has turned the teen’s story into a public debate on ICE enforcement.

Company takes swift action to enforce zero tolerance policy against cruelty, illegal activity

Sheridan, WY — Epik LLC, a leading domain registrar and internet services company, has suspended two domains hosting websites linking to hundreds of videos depicting severe animal cruelty and abuse. After reviewing formal complaints, Epik confirmed the domains connected to illegal and deeply harmful material, and that both domains were registered to the same account holder. Epik’s abuse prevention team determined both domains were in direct violation of its Terms of Service which strictly prohibit websites hosting or promoting content involving cruelty or abuse.

While a domain owner may not directly create the content posted on user-generated platforms, they are responsible for moderating what appears on the domains under their control. When illegal content is connected to their domains, they have a legal obligation to remove it, disrupt its distribution, and report it to appropriate authorities. In this case, that responsibility was not met.

Epik takes its responsibility as a domain registrar very seriously and reserves the right to remove access to any content that violates international, federal, state or local laws, as well as customary acceptable use standards. This applies to any content that shows illegal activity, or promotes, encourages, or displays cruelty to humans or animals. The company has a dedicated compliance team that works tirelessly to ensure domain owners are operating within the Terms of Service agreement and to create an online environment of safety and security.

Both domains have been permanently suspended effective immediately, and the user who registered them is being permanently banned from the Epik platform. As a result, both domains are now ineligible for transfer. The websites associated with those domains are no longer accessible, and all content previously linked through those sites cannot be reached through Epik infrastructure.

Epik unequivocally condemns animal cruelty in any form and has zero tolerance for such content, whether hosted on our infrastructure, registered through us, or appearing anywhere online. WASHINGTON — Digital sabotage had knocked a Somalian news website and email accounts offline in August.

"I can still feel the frustration," reporter Abdalle Ahmed Mumin told Reuters. "Our link to the outside world, to the international media, is our website."

It was only after getting help from Qurium, a Swedish nonprofit that does digital defense work for news organizations and nonprofits, that Mumin was able to get his site back on its feet.

When Qurium investigated, it eventually traced a source of the outage to a surprising place: Wyoming.

Although Qurium said it wasn't able to get to a lock on who pulled the trigger on the cyberattack, it did discover that the sabotage was carried out with the help of a limited liability company based out of the vast western state.

Reuters has found it was one of at least three instances in the past four months in which digital defenders have implicated Wyoming LLCs in high-profile hacking activity. Interviews with half a dozen tech and compliance experts and hacking victims like Mumin suggest that the state once known as the rugged refuge for 19th-century bandits is now catering to 21st-century outlaws.

"It's the virtual Wild, Wild West," said Sarah Beth Felix, who runs Palmera Consulting, an anti-money laundering advisory firm. She said the state made registering anonymous shell companies so easy that foreign crooks "don't have to be physically in Wyoming to hide out in Wyoming."

Joe Rubino, the general counsel for the Wyoming Secretary of State's Office, which is responsible for registering the state's business entities, said his colleagues were taking the information flagged by Reuters "for further review and investigation."

He added that Wyoming's Secretary of State, Chuck Gray, supports the idea of new laws "to prevent abuses of Wyoming's corporate filing system by foreign entities" but that the state legislature had yet to take the matter up.

Wyoming isn't alone in allowing anonymous shell companies — Delaware and Nevada have similar offerings — but Qurium said hackers particularly favored Wyoming LLCs because they were advertised as cost-effective and user-friendly.

Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) revealed Friday that it didn’t take him long to realize Kristi Noem was “dead as fried chicken” after he grilled her on Capitol Hill.

Just hours after a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Tuesday, where Kennedy pressed Noem over a $220 million taxpayer-funded ad campaign she approved as secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, the senator received a call from a furious President Trump, he told Fox News host Will Cain.

“He was mad as a mamma wasp,” the folksy Louisiana Republican said of Trump’s demeanor.

Noem claimed during the hearing that the president “tasked” her with “getting the message out to the country and to other countries” through pricey commercials that illegal immigrants “needed to leave.”

Kennedy said he was “stunned” that the since-fired DHS secretary testified that the president “approved every single bit” of the ad campaign.

But Trump, after apparently watching the hearing, informed Kennedy that it wasn’t the case.

A 52-year-old Guatemalan national living illegally in the Westlake district of Los Angeles pleaded guilty in federal court Friday to running one of the largest human smuggling operations ever prosecuted in the United States — an enterprise that moved approximately 20,000 people across the southern border over more than a decade, left seven people dead on an Oklahoma highway including a 4-year-old child, and kept human beings locked in stash houses until their families paid up or faced death threats.

His name is Eduardo Domingo Renoj-Matul. His alias was “Turko.” And for years, he operated in the open, just blocks from downtown Los Angeles.

Renoj-Matul entered his guilty plea on two federal counts: conspiracy to bring aliens into the United States for financial gain, and hostage-taking. Sentencing is scheduled for October 2, 2026, at which point he faces a statutory maximum of life in federal prison. The plea came roughly thirteen months after his February 2025 arrest, which itself followed years during which his transnational criminal organization moved thousands of Guatemalans through Mexico, across the Arizona border, and into a network of stash houses stretching from Phoenix to Los Angeles.

The scale of the operation is difficult to absorb. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California, the Renoj-Matul organization functioned for at least twelve years. Associates in Guatemala recruited migrants and charged between $15,000 and $18,000 per person for transportation to the United States. The immigrants were first handed off to Mexican smuggling networks who moved them through Sonora and into Arizona, where Renoj-Matul’s people collected them and held them in stash houses — at least one of which sat on James M. Wood Boulevard in Westlake — until fees were paid in full. Prosecutors say migrants who could not pay were not simply turned away. They were held hostage.

Dynamic pricing is becoming a defining feature of modern retail, with more of America’s best-known brands adjusting prices in real time based on demand, timing, and market conditions, according to Decodo.

A new report from Decodo, which analyzed more than 1.5 million data points across 120 global eCommerce retailers, reveals which companies are changing prices most often — and when shoppers are most likely to find a deal.

At the top of the list is Amazon, which recorded 116,509 price changes over the past year — far more than any other retailer analyzed. The online marketplace also offered the deepest average discounts, with prices dropping by 35.3% on average. According to the data, Wednesday is the best day for shoppers to find bargains on Amazon. Walmart ranked second with 68,926 price adjustments and an average discount of 10.6%, while Kroger came third, making 55,601 changes with an average 9.1% reduction. For both Walmart and Kroger, Monday emerged as the most favorable day for deals.

Registered Agents Inc. has for years allowed businesses to register under a cloak of anonymity. A WIRED investigation reveals that its secretive founder has taken the practice to an extreme.

Inside a drab one-story office building in Post Falls, Idaho, a little-known American company has built the machinery that enables hundreds of thousands of businesses to operate in near-total secrecy.

The company, Registered Agents Inc., is a one-stop shop for people seeking to incorporate a business in any US state, often in those with advantageous tax policies, while obscuring their identities. According to five former employees of Registered Agents Inc. or its subsidiaries, the company routinely incorporates thousands of businesses on behalf of its customers using fake personas. Former Registered Agents Inc. employees say that the company’s widespread use of personas is an outgrowth of its founder’s obsession with privacy and a desire to push the boundaries of incorporation laws.

The registered agent industry, which incorporates businesses and acts as a point of contact for legal notices, is already effective at masking the identity of who owns a company. Registered agents have many legitimate uses, and states often require that a company have a registered agent. In some instances, however, these services have benefited “oligarchs, criminals, and online scammers,” according to a 2022 investigation by The Washington Post and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. Experts say a lack of adequate federal and state regulations of registered agents helps to make the United States a hotbed for money-laundering and other shady business dealings.

In a typical scenario, a registered agent would incorporate a company on behalf of a customer. An employee of the registered agent company would list their name on the incorporation documents, sometimes providing the company’s email address and office as contact information. That process provides business owners one layer of secrecy, preventing anyone who looks at state records from determining the real owner of a company.

Registered Agents Inc., according to the former employees, routinely goes one step further, incorporating companies in the names of fictional personas created by the company’s founder, Dan Keen. It’s unclear what benefit Registered Agents Inc. or its customers receive when a company is incorporated by a fake identity.

Around the country, at least 1,463 companies incorporated by Registered Agents Inc. list a woman named Riley Park as an organizer or agent, according to a WIRED analysis of publicly available incorporation documents. But Riley Park isn’t a real person, the former employees say. She’s one of multiple fake personas used by Registered Agents Inc. Former employees identified at least 10 fake personas used by the company, including David Roberts, Drake Forester, and Morgan Noble.

Using business records made public by OpenCorporates, a website that shares and standardizes information sourced from business registries around the world, WIRED found 36,257 business listing company officers who share names that former employees say are fake. At least 3,735 of these businesses’ incorporation paperwork references Registered Agents Inc., either explicitly in the paperwork or by using an address known to former employees as belonging to Registered Agents Inc.

WIRED’s analysis found that these companies are registered in 20 different states and appear to provide services ranging from law enforcement training to landscaping. Many of these companies with officers using an alleged fake name were registered to addresses known by sources to belong to Registered Agents Inc. For example, six allegedly fake names were listed as officers for 887 of businesses registered to the same address in Sheridan, Wyoming—an office of Registered Agents Inc.
