Trump kicks Tucker Carlson out of MAGA

The US president has expelled the conservative commentator over his criticism of the Iran war

US President Donald Trump has expelled prominent conservative talk show host Tucker Carlson from his Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement, saying Carlson has “lost his way.”

The breaking point between the two came over the US-Israeli attack on Iran, which Carlson has characterized as “absolutely disgusting and evil.”

“Tucker has lost his way. I knew that a long time ago, and he’s not MAGA,” Trump said in an interview with ABC News on Thursday.

“MAGA is saving our country. MAGA is making our country great again. MAGA is America first, and Tucker is none of those things,” the US president added.

During his 2024 election campaign, Trump vowed to avoid foreign interventions, promising to be a “peace president,” and assuring supporters he was “not going to start a war, I’m going to stop wars.” This became a core MAGA campaign theme.

Carlson, the former Fox News host, was given a prime speaking slot at the Republican National Convention in 2024 and interviewed Trump during his campaign. Now he runs the Tucker Carlson Network, an online streaming platform which he has increasingly used to advocate for a non-interventionist foreign policy.

His content has also been used by RT, and he has conducted high-profile interviews with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow.

Last June, Trump called Carlson “kooky” on Truth Social after the journalist criticized those urging military action against the Islamic Republic.

Trump has recently lost another prominent ally – former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene. Their relationship soured late last year over the release of documents related to the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Greene accused Trump of preventing the files’ disclosure and pushed for full transparency.

Trump in turn called her “wacky” and a “ranting lunatic,” leading to Greene’s resignation from Congress in January.

President Donald Trump told CNN Friday that Iran’s leadership has been “neutered” and thathe’s looking for new leadershipthatwill treat the United States and Israel well, __even if that’s a religious leader and it’s not a democratic state_.

“Iran is not the same country it was a week ago. A week ago they were powerful, and now they’ve been indeed neutered,” he told CNN in a brief but wide-ranging phone interview.

In that call,he also said Cuba would fall “pretty soon” and emphasized the importance ofvoter ID legislation, which he suggested could be determinativein his Texas Senate endorsement.

Trump expressed confidence in the ease of picking a new leader in Iran— which he’s said he must be involved in — and again compared the mission to Venezuela, where the US captured Nicolás Maduro earlier this year and put his deputy in power.

“It’s gonna work very easily. It’s going to work like did in Venezuela. We have a wonderful leader there. She’s doing a fantastic job. And it’s going to work Iike in Venezuela,” he said, referring to acting president Delcy Rodriguez.

Trump also said he was open to having a religious leader in Iran. “Well I may be yeah, I mean,it dependson who the person is.I don’t mind religious leaders. I deal with a lot of religious leaders and they are fantastic,” he said.

And pressed onif he is insisting there needs to be a democratic state, Trump told CNN,“No, I’m saying there has to be a leader that’s going be fair and just. Do a great job. Treat the United States and Israel well, and treat the other countries in the Middle East —they’re all our partners.”

He went on to tout his relationship with those countries in the Middle East, claiming they’re “fighting for us.”

“And I became very friendly with all those countries. That’s why they’re all fighting for us. Before I got involved,we didn’t even speak to UAE and Saudi Arabia. You know, (President Joe) Biden shut out.Bidenand (President Barack)Obama shut Saudi Arabia, UAE Qatar, he shut them all out. They were all going to goto China, and I got involved in very short period of time that became my friends,” Trump said.

And while the president praised the US operation against Iran — saying it’s a “12, maybe 15 on the scale of 10” —he suggested he wasn’t worried about rising gas prices.

“That’s all right. It’ll be short term time. It’ll go way down very quickly,” he said, while dismissing that prices are up significantly and saying he’s “already figured out” the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump separately told CNN that Cuba “is going to fall pretty soon:“Cuba is gonna fall pretty soon, by the way, unrelated, but Cuba is gonna fall too.They want to make a deal so badly,” he told Bash when touting US military success in his second term.

“They want to make a deal, andso I’m going to put Marco (Rubio) over there and we’ll see how that works out. We’re really focused on this one right now. We’ve got plenty of time, but Cuba’s ready — after 50 years,” he added, explainingthat Iran is the current priority.

He continued on Cuba: “I’ve been watching it for 50 years, and it’s fallen right into my lap because of me,it’s fallen, but it’s nevertheless fallen right into the lap. And we’re doing very well.”

A day earlier,Trump said at the White House that it’s only a “question of time” before American Cubans can return to their home country, appearing to say that’s next on the administration’s agenda after the ongoing war with Iran.

“He’s (Rubio) doing some job, and your next one is going to be,we want to do that special Cuba,” Trump said Thursday referring to his Secretary of State.“He’s waiting. But he says, ‘Let’s get this one finished first.’ We could do them all at the same time, but bad things happen.If you watch countries over the years, you do them all too fast, bad things happen. We’re not going to let anything bad happen to this country.”

Trump emphasizes voter ID law

After the war with Iran, Trump saidthe next most important issue for his administration is passing voter ID legislation— and that it could be key to his endorsement in the contentious Texas Senate runoff.

Trump has said he’ll soon make a choicebetween Sen. John Cornyn, the incumbent, and state Attorney General Ken Paxton, who’s been pushing the SAVE America Act.

“I’m making a decision fairly shortly, but I want and then I feel very strongly that we have to have the full and complete SAVE America Act, OK?I want the SAVE America Act. It is more important than everything else we’re working on other than the war,” he told Bash.

Trump suggested he needs assurances that both candidates would support the legislation.(Guaranteed Cornyn wouldn’t vote for that. That could be why Thune and other leaders are backing Cornyn. He’s their secret bomb to shut down everything Trump needs and wants. I believe this is true, the Republicans keep the ones that are guaranteed a NO vote against anything Trump and America needs. The Reps are begging, literally begging Trump to back Cornyn. They are freaked if he’s not,there has to be a much darker and deeper why Cornyn is so valuable to them. And they know Paxton is not corrupt, he’s just too honest and a Constitutional Patriot and lawyer; and once he gets in Senate the whole anti Trump Cabal of Senate Republicans will or may be disabled.)

“The Senate has to act on it. The House on it.And I don’t want the watered down one — that doesn’t mean anything. I want the one that just told you, five things,” he said.

Cornyn supports the bill but has refused to say whether he personally would vote to change Senate rules in order to pass it.

“There’s not the votes in the Republican conference to change those rules,” he told CNN ahead of the primary.

Paxton said this week he would consider dropping out of the contentious runoffif Senate leaders agreed to gut the filibuster and pass the legislation.

“The Save America Act is the most important bill the U.S. Senate could ever pass, and I’m committed to helping President Trump get it done,” he wrote on X.

Cornyn (lies, lied, and sabotages everything Trump) shot back on X: “I repeat what I have consistently said==: I support the bill and have encouraged Senate Republicans to get it done.”

Sri Lanka Takes Control of Iranian Supply Ship, Evacuates Sailors

The government of Sri Lanka has decided to take control of the Iranian supply ship IRIS Bushehr, with the president of the country calling it a humanitarian effort after the ship sought refuge in Colombo. They are evacuating the sailors from the ship and will move the Bushehr to a remote port in the northeast of the country.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake of Sri Lanka reported that they had carefully discussed the situation, emphasizing that the country remains neutral in the current war in the Middle East. He said that there had been discussions with the Sri Lankan Navy and the captain of the Iranian ship, as well as the embassies of Iran and the United States.

“We have to understand that this is not an ordinary situation,” the president said during a briefing on Thursday night. “It’s a request by a ship belonging to one party to enter into our port. We have to consider that according to the international treaties and conventions… Thus, we have adopted a very clear position. We do not act in a biased manner towards any state, nor do we submit to any state. We are a sovereign and independent state. As a government, we have a responsibility regarding our seas, a responsibility regarding our state, and a responsibility towards our people.”

Sri Lanka indicated that it was prepared to take custody of both the crew and the vessel, subject to agreements and understandings reached between the parties.

The president said they had received a request from the ship to enter the Port of Colombo and that they were subsequently informed that one of the ship’s engines had suffered damage. He said the decision, however, was that retaining the ship in Colombo, the country’s main commercial port, “carries the risk of adversely affecting our maritime industry.”

The decision called for evacuating most of the personnel aboard the Bushehr aboard a boat that was placed alongside on Thursday night. A total of 208 people, including 53 officers, 48 senior sailors, 23 sailors, and 84 cadets, were landed and processed by immigration and received a medical check. They are being moved to a navy camp in Welisara, about 10 miles outside Colombo.

The Sri Lankan Navy has boarded the Iranian ship and is working with 15 crewmembers who remained aboard to help translate and provide information. The vessel will be moved to the Port of Trincomalee, where it will remain indefinitely.

Commissioned in 1974, the vessel is 108 meters (354 feet) in length and 3,300 dwt. It was believed to have been dispatched from Iran to resupply the frigate Dena, which the U.S. sank on Wednesday. Trump affirmed earlier on Friday that there would be no deal with Iran and that the US would only accept the Islamic regime’s “unconditional surrender.”

Separately, Russia is said to be providing Iran with targeting information that includes locations of US warships and aircraft in the Middle East, The Washington Post reported on Friday, citing three officials familiar with the intelligence.

Dozens of Democrats havevoted against a nonbinding resolutionin the House that reaffirms Iran as the "largest state sponsor of terrorism."

The resolution, put forward by Rep. Brian Mast, R-Fla., passed by a 372-53 vote on Thursday, with all those voting no being Democrats. Two Democrats also voted present.

Among those who voted against the measure were all the members of the "Squad," such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., and Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich.

The resolution said the Islamic Republic of Iran "remains the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism and provides substantial financial and military support to groups including Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis."

It added that Iran "poses a direct and persistent threat to the United States and is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American citizens," citing the Pentagon as saying that "Iranian-backed proxy militias are responsible for the deaths of at least 603 U.S. service members in Iraq – roughly one in every six American combat fatalities."

It also said, "according to the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafeal Grossi,Iran has amassed a large stockpile of enriched uranium and continues to block access to undeclared sites in Iran affiliated with their ‘big, ambitious nuclear weapons program.’"

The resolution concludes by saying, "That the House of Representatives declares it is the policy of the United States… that Iran continues to be the largest state sponsor of terrorism."

California Democratic Rep. Lateefah Simon,who voted no, claimed the resolution "contains inaccuracies and is designed to justify the President's actions in Iran."

"Republicans in Congress are not only surrendering their constitutional duties – they are also playing politics with a resolution reaffirming Iran as a leading state sponsor of terrorism," Simon wrote on Facebook. "That is already U.S. policy."

"I have been clear about my opposition to the brutal and devastating actions of the Iranian regime against those protesting for freedom," Simon continued. "This resolution does nothing to advance their freedom and instead, puts Congress on record as giving the Administration further pretext for a war that should not have been started in the first place."

Rep. Julie Fedorchak, R-N.D., who voted in favor of the resolution, said in a statementthat, "This week’s bipartisan classified briefing with Marco Rubio, Pete Hegseth, John Ratcliffe, and General Dan Caine underscored the significance of the threat we face from an Iran intent on developing nuclear weapons behind a curtain of impenetrable ballistic weapons."

"Standing with our allies and confronting state-sponsored terrorism is essential to protecting Americans and advancing stability around the world," she added."This resolution sends a strong message that we will not ignore or excuse the regime’s extremist actions."

Rep. Adam Smith, a Democrat from Washington state who also voted in favor of the resolution, said, "I agree with the principal assertion of this resolution that Iran is a bad actor.

"Iran's malign and destabilizing actions in the region and treatment of its own citizens should be denounced. I have never contested this. What I do contest is that going to war is the reasonable response to this assertion," he continued. "I support this resolution. I do not support the president’s war of choice with Iran."

Brendan Schulman, former VP of policy and legal affairs at DJI, said in 2021, amid leaving the drone maker for Boston Dynamics, that Hudson's work in uncovering piecemeal details about the incident had left him "convinced" there was never a drone near Gatwick.

"Weather conditions in the Gatwick area on the first evening of the incident were unsuitable for covert or overt operation of UAS [unmanned aircraft systems], especially given the technology available in 2018," Graham Degg, founder of drone industry trade body Unmanned Support, told The Register.

"Claims that UAS were flying in ways described on that evening were therefore extraordinary. To date, the industry has not been presented with the extraordinary evidence required to counter the official narrative.

"The CAA and other authorities have continued to reference the Gatwick incident when seeking to strengthen drone regulations. Additional regulation adds an administrative burden to all professional operators and hampers growth.

Perhaps worse is the fact that the Gatwick incident is also used by regulators outside the UK to the same ends and with similar impact. Never was so much regulation caused by an incident for which so little evidence seems to exist."

Hudson, who is a contributor to the Airprox Reality Check fact-checking website, previously summarized the drone industry's concerns about the official Gatwick narrative.

Freedom of Information requests revealed that the first sightings of drones were in the hours well after sunset, at a time when rainfall was reported at the airport.

Very few drones had water resistance ratings to fly in these conditions at the time, and drone enthusiasts questioned why someone who had access to one of the few rain-resistant drones, and would not want to be caught, would fly with their lights on in such close proximity to an airport.

The Royal Air Force deployed aerospace engineering company Leonardo's Falcon Shield drone detection system at Gatwick on December 20, which remained operational between then and December 24.

Leonardo has since said that no malicious drones were detected during this time, but detected all of the friendly test drones the airport and Sussex Police sent to the skies, testing the system's efficacy.

The company's testimony conflicts with the redacted Operation Trebor debrief report [PDF], the timeline from which states that numerous drone sightings were made after Falcon Shield was deployed.

Surely there's footage?

One thing that could have settled the speculation was for the government or Sussex Police to release imagery of the drones that were sighted at Gatwick.

It wasn't until June 2023, however, that the Home Office finally revealed that images of the drone sightings existed and supplied them following Freedom of Information requests.

Before then, Giles York, Chief Constable of Sussex Police at the time, told Parliament's Defence Committee that there were 109 credible confirmed drone sightings, but said there was no footage.

"One of the most curious parts about it was that there was no filmed imaging at all of the drone, even though so many people thought they had seen it," said committee chair Dr Julian Lewis when questioning York over the lack of footage.

"Isn't it rather strange that no CCTV system and nobody with a mobile phone camera managed to pick up this device when it was causing such disruption?"

York responded by saying he was not surprised, and that because of the drones' speed and size, capturing them on any device at 0.5 miles away was "fantastically challenging."

"Should you wish to come and visit Gatwick Airport to have a look, I would welcome you there, because why it wasn't captured kind of feels obvious," said York.

"Gatwick Airport – I am looking behind me – is a huge area. You try telling me what a drone half a mile away at the other end of a runway looks like from here, film it on the best phone that you have got, and show me the footage that says, 'Undoubtedly, this is what we have got.'

"This is one of the fascinating things for us. We feel that we have seen so many pictures, videos, and whatever of drones in flight, but considering the length of the runway, the width of the airport itself, and the distances concerned, personally, having been at the heart of it, I am not surprised we haven't had any."

Sussex Police previously confirmed its investigation into Operation Trebor ran up a hefty bill to the tune of £790,000 ($1.05 million). It resulted in no convictions, nor much in the way of credible evidence.

"I am hoping the Lessons Learned document captures how unreliable sightings of lights at night are, as the same pattern of airport closures without any evidence of a drone has been reported across the EU, for example, in Norway," Hudson told The Register.

"The release of EO/IR [electro-optical/infrared] cockpit video by the MoD this week from a downing of a Shahed is positive proof drones can be captured without difficulty on EO/IR, and the RAF deployed one of the best EO/IR systems in the world to Gatwick, which only evidenced a lack of any rogue drones."

Arab states in the Persian Gulf are running dangerously low on interceptors to take down Iranian-fired missiles,two regional officials told CBS News.

Governments in the region have asked the U.S. to expedite new supplies, and they've been told that officials in Washington are creating a task force to do so —but it isn't happening as fast as needed.

The hundreds of drones launched by Iran are an added complication.The officials speculated that Iran is intentionally hitting the Arab states to get them to pressure the U.S. to end the war.

On Wednesday,Air Force Gen. Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff,pushed back on supply concerns and told reporters at the Pentagon that there were sufficient "precision munitions for the task at hand, both on the offense and defense."

In a statement provided to CBS News on Thursday night, White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said that"Iran's retaliatory ballistic missile attacks" had decreased by 90%because the joint U.S.-Israeli strikes were "crushing" Iran's "ability to shoot these weapons or produce more."

"President Trump is in close contact with all of our regional partners, and the terrorist Iranian regime's attacks on its neighbors prove how imperative it was that President Trump eliminate this threat to our country and our allies," Kelly said.

Three regional officialsalso acknowledged that communication is challenging as, despite being more than a year into his term,President Trump has not sent ambassadors to many of the countries, including Lebanon, Jordan and Qatar.

Due to the lack of nominations or slow-moving confirmations, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait are among the locations without a presidential representative in-country and are relying on charge d'affaires. Amer Ghalib, the former mayor of Hamtramck, Michigan, was nominated to be ambassador to Kuwait but faltered during confirmation hearings due to questioning about his past antisemitic and incendiary social media posts.

The National Security Council and the State Department are also thinly staffed compared to prior administrations, which leaves fewer points of contact. Mr. Trump's envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, do not handle country management issues.

In addition to the Iranian-fired missiles, Kuwait has also had incoming fire from nearby Iraq, where militias have fired missiles and drones into civilian areas.

Meanwhile, 10 people believed to be Iranian agents were arrested Wednesday in Qatar on suspicion of planning attacks. There is concern about sleeper cells and radicalization among Shiite Muslim populations in certain countries such as Bahrain.

Also,many officials expressed broad concern about the Kurdish fighters expected to enter Iran, saying that injecting sectarian conflict into the already combustible situation will be detrimental and also cause friction with Turkey, which fears Kurdish separatists.
