Iran's next supreme leader won't 'last long' without my approval, Trump says

As the Iranians get closer to naming their next supreme leader,President Donald Trump said Sunday the new leader "is not going to last long" if the Iranians don't get his approval first.

"He’s going to have to get approval from us," the president told ABC News. "If he doesn’t get approval from us he’s not going to last long.We want to make sure that we don’t have to go back every 10 years, when you don’t have a president like me that’s not going to do it."

He added, "I don’t want people to have to go back in five years and have to do the same thing again or worse let them have a nuclear weapon."

When asked if he would be willing toapprove someone with ties to the old regime, Trump replied, "I would, in order to choose a good leader I would, yeah, I would. There are numerous people that could qualify."

Seeming to offer yet another justification for this war, Trump said Iran was planning to take over the entire Middle East, and suggested he stopped them from doing so.

"They are a paper tiger. They weren’t a paper tiger a week ago, I’ll tell you. And they were going to attack," he said. "Their plan was to attack the entire Middle East, to take over the entire Middle East."

He also hasn't ruled out sending in special forces to seize Iran's enriched uranium: "Everything is on the table. Everything."

A senior administration official told reporters last week that Iran has enriched enough uranium to get to weapons grade material in 10 days or less. (Witkoff said the Iranians negotiators said is 11 bombs they could produce.)

Much of the uranium is believed to be held at the sites bombed during Operation Midnight Hammer Natanz, Isfahan and Fordow according to the official.

"In theory, if we had physical control of that territory, if we had physical control of those places where it's located, we could send our people in and dilute it on premise," the official said.

Over the weekend, Trump met with the families of the six U.S. fallen soldiers.Did witnessing the dignified transfers give him pause?

"No, not at all," he said. "The parents would be upset if I did that. The parents said to me, every one of them, please sir, win this for my boy, and in one case a young woman, as you know. Please, win this for my child."

He added, "It was a beautiful event. It was a beautiful, beautiful event, where I met the parents.They were devastated but proud."

Trump said he wouldn’t predict how long the war would last when pressed on a timeline.

"I don’t know. I never predict. All I can say is we are ahead of schedule both in terms of lethality and in terms of time," he said.

Last week, the president told reporters this war would last just four to five weeks.

In the interview, the president also dismissed rising gasoline prices as a "little glitch."

"I think it’s fine. It’s a little glitch. We had to take this detour," he said. "I knew exactly what was going to happen with the detour. But the nice part is we sank 44 of their ships which is their entire navy. We’ve knocked out their entire AirForce. We’ve knocked out all of their communications, telecommunications. Their anti-aircraft systems are gone. They have absolutely no defense. All they have is talk."

Some of the president's longtime supporters have raised questions about this operation, but Trump denied there's been any pushback from his base.

"It’s more popular than ever. It’s a very MAGA thing what we’re doing. A very very MAGA thing," he said. "Because otherwise we won’t have a country either, we’ll be hit. And MAGA is all about saving America … I’m at the highest point I’ve ever been with MAGA."

NASA’s hiring initiatives: Bring contractors in-house and get new talent with ‘NASA Force’

NASA is hiring new talent to rebuild its “core competencies” and meet the agency’s aggressive moon deadlines.

This push could reinvigorate the workforce and help NASA launch its moon rocket about every 10 months.

But the timing comes just two months after thousands of civil servants received their final paycheck from last year’s buyouts, suggesting the workforce reductions were not conducive to NASA’s long-term goals.

“I’m encouraged to see what appears to be a rectification of what I believe was a serious strategic mistake last year,” Thomas González Roberts, director of the Engineering Space Policy Laboratory at the Georgia Institute of Technology, wrote in an email.

“That said, this new approach won’t immediately reverse some of the negative effects of that decision.”

NASA has two hiring initiatives underway. One will turn government contractors into civil servants. Houston’s mission control, for instance, has “a lot of contractors that should be civil servants,” NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman told CNBC.

The other initiative is a newly announced “NASA Force” that will attempt to attract top minds from the private sector for two-year terms. Isaacman hopes these workers will strengthen NASA’s younger talent pipeline.

“We need some of that talent from industry to come in, short periods of time, and help season our workforce,” Isaacman said in his CNBC interview.

NASA experienced a turbulent 2025. It didn’t have a Senate-confirmed leader for most of the year, there was a 43-day government shutdown and nearly 4,000 people participated in two deferred resignation programs.

Isaacman became the NASA administrator in December after his second confirmation hearing. He spent a few months reviewing the agency’s challenges and opportunities.

And then he began announcing some changes, particularly around NASA’s Artemis Program that is returning humans to the moon.

Artemis II will remain unchanged, launching astronauts on a 10-day mission around the moon as soon as April.

That was going to be followed by the Artemis III moon-landing mission in 2028, but Isaacman announced last week that Artemis III will test hardware in low-Earth `orbit in 2027. Artemis IV will land on the moon in 2028.

NASA needs to launch its Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft more often to maintain muscle memory, Isaacman said. He also wanted an additional mission to test commercial partners’ landers and spacesuits before taking them to the moon.

Rebuilding NASA’s “core competencies” will help with both of those initiatives — and others, Isaacman said.

“We outsourced a lot of our core competencies,” Isaacman said this week during the American Dynamism Summit. “Industry consolidated.

We let stakeholders set the priorities to serve constituent interests and adopted policies in the attempt to make everyone happy — maybe make everyone happy other than the American people and really people all over the world that were waiting for the headlines that only NASA was capable of making.”

Sir Richard Branson has warned that Britain must prepare for war in space and to 'dominate' the industry for the sake of national security.

The British billionaire, 75, gave the eerie warning to crowds at Space-Comm Expo Europe in London this week.

Speaking via video chat at the space conference, he said: 'I'm afraid we're going to have to try to dominate it as far as … future wars are concerned, and hopefully work with Americans, but be ready to stand on our own two feet.'

Sir Richard said the UK is 'capable' of 'matching' competitors China, Russia and the US to dominate space, but added that government support for space companies is 'another matter'.

'It would be wise for the Government, particularly in this age with wars coming back again, to invest in the right projects,' he said.

Maj Gen Tedman called on Britain to be 'more assertive', adding: 'To keep pace with the threats and tech we need to move much faster and exploit commercial industry. The direction is clear. The time is now. The cost of inaction is rising.'

Many countries are already utilising space as a war-fighting domain with satellites for spying, encrypting communications, guiding missiles and ensuring the smooth running of an advanced economy.

Several countries have Space Commands within their militaries including the US, India, Russia, China and the UK - the latter based at RAF High Wycombe.

For this decade at least, a war in space would primarily be about war on Earth.

Given that technologically advanced powers now rely so much on space, it is central to modern military thinking.

Without satellites, the commanders don't know where to position their aircraft carriers, long-range missiles and troops. Nor do they know precisely where the enemy is.

There is an existing Outer Space Treaty, however this is a relic of the 1960s and has not been updated to reflect modern military technology - or the emergence of private enterprises such as the US's Space X and Blue Origin, or China's i-Space.

The treaty prohibits placing nuclear weapons in space, for example, but makes no mention of conventional weapons.

Nor, given they had yet to be invented, does it even mention laser weapons.

We also lack guidelines about how close one country's satellite can get to another's which, given that parts of some countries' nuclear early warning systems are in their satellites, would seem imperative.

On Wednesday, Space Minister Baroness Lloyd of Effra announced a £500million investment in Britain's national space programme, bringing total government funding to £2.8billion between now and 2030.

This lagged far behind Germany's planned €35billion (£30.4billion) investment in the next four years.

The US now finds itself in a new space race with China, with both nations planning to land astronauts on the moon before 2030 and later build bases on its surface.

Chinese satellites have been spotted 'dogfighting' in space, practising moving aggressively within less than a mile of each other suggesting they are preparing for space warfare.

Elsewhere, Russian intelligence satellites have stalked orbiting European spacecraft, prompting suspicions Moscow is developing an anti-satellite weapon.

Prosecutors arelooking for potential crimesrelated to drugs, immigration and other violations, they said.

Cuba isn’t seen as a drug trafficking hub. The involvement of Treasury officials suggest prosecutors could be pursuing charges for sanctions violations, legal experts said.

“It could result in arrest warrants which can then be executed by the same means as we saw in Venezuela,” said Evan T. Barr, a former prosecutor now with the law firm Reed Smith.

A spokesperson for U.S. attorney Jason Reding Quiñones didn’t respond to a request for comment. A Justice Department spokesman said, “Federal prosecutors from across the country work every day to pursue justice, which includes efforts to combat transnational crime.”

The move comes at a crucial moment for U.S. relations with Cuba. The Trump administration has imposed a de facto oil blockade on the Communist island by threatening to put tariffs on anyone shipping oil to Cuba.

Administration officials haveassessed that Cuba’s economy is close to collapse and that the government has never been this fragileafter losing a vital benefactor in Maduro.

Trump is also increasingly emboldened after the January raid in Caracas to capture Maduro, who is now being held in a Brooklyn federal jail awaiting trial on drug-trafficking charges. He has pleaded not guilty. Maduro’s lawyer has asked a judge to toss out the indictment and the case likely won’t go to trial for months, if not years….

A former NASA astronaut has explained why humanity is 'living a lie' after he spent a staggering 178 days in space on the International Space Station (ISS).

Ron Garan orbited planet Earth 2,842 times after leaving his family on April 4, 2011. Before he returned home on September 16 of that year, the astronaut saw a lot of things.

Ron has since gone on to detail some of the biggest revelations he made from his near six-month trip in space, including how he saw the world from space.

Speaking to Big Think, he said: "When we see our planet from the perspective of space, certain things become undeniably clear.

"We keep trying to deal with issues such as global warning, deforestation, biodiversity loss as stand alone issues, when in reality they're just symptoms of the underlying root problem.

"The problem is that we don't see ourselves as planetary."

One thing that struck Ron the most, however, was how differently Earth looked while he was in orbit.

He explained: "I didn't see the economy. But since our human-made systems treat everything, including the very life-support systems of our planet, as the wholly owned subsidiary of the global economy, it's obvious from the vantage point of space that we're living a lie."

Described as the 'Overview Effect', Ron's thoughts is based on the sensation humans feel when they look down at our home.

"When I looked out of the window of the International Space Station, I saw the paparazzi like flashes of lightening storms, I saw dancing curtains of auroras that seemed so close it was as if we could reach out and touch them, and I saw the unbelievable thinness of our planet's atmosphere," the former NASA astronaut went on to explain.

Ron then came to the 'sobering realization' that our planet is only being kept going by a 'paper thin layer'.

"I saw an iridescent biosphere teaming with life, I didn't see an economy, but since our human-made systems treat everything, including the very life-support systems of our planet as the […] subsidiary of the global economy, it's obvious from the vanish point of space that we're living a lie," he added.

Since his return to Earth, Ron has been working hard to ensure we 'work towards a cleaner, safer and more peaceful planet'.

"We're not going to have peace on Earth until we recognize the basic fact of the interrelated structure of all reality," he concluded.

Xi sends warning to ‘corrupt elements’ in Chinese army

Chinese President Xi Jinping has vowed to continue the campaign against corruption within the military after several senior commanders were dismissed over allegations of graft and misconduct.

The president made his warning during a speech before delegates from the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and the People’s Armed Police on Saturday.

“There must be no place in the military for those who are disloyal to the party, nor any place for corrupt elements,” Xi said.

He called for strict oversight in “key areas such as fund flows, the exercise of power, and quality control” during the country’s next five-year plan set to be greenlit later this month.

After securing his third term in 2023, Xi initiated a crackdown on graft in the armed forces and the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party.

The campaign has led to the dismissal of multiple members of the Central Military Commission (CMC) and dozens of generals. In 2023, the Chinese Communist Party expelled two former defense ministers.

Earlier this year, Chinese authorities launched an anti-graft probe into Zhang Youxia, vice chairman of the CMC, on suspicion of “serious violation of discipline and law.”

Western media outlets suggested that Zhang may have been accused of leaking information on China’s nuclear program to the US.

The Central Intelligence Agency has recently renewed efforts to recruit informants in the PLA, releasing Chinese-language ads targeting service members with access to sensitive information about military technology.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has condemned the ads, vowing to “combat infiltration and sabotage activities of foreign anti-China forces.”

A Ukrainian drone attack sparked a fire at an oil depot in Russia’s Krasnodar Krai late on March 7, the region's emergency task force reported.

A Russian drone hit a passenger train in Ukraine's Sumy Oblast on March 8, the media outlet Suspilne reported, citing the regional prosecutor's office.

The drone was preliminarily identified as a Lancet, one of Russia's preferred strike drones.

Ukrainian railways have had a rough go of the past several months as Russia has ramped up its attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure near the frontline.

The campaign has not spared civilians. A similar drone strike at the end of January killed five people and injured two others in Kharkiv Oblast, Sumy's neighbor to the southeast.

IDF attacks Iran aerospace headquarters, sets back dual nuke use space launching tech

The IDF attacked Iran's Aerospace Headquarters for launching satellites on Saturday, technology which could potentially be incorporated in future attempts to develop nuclear weapons that could be fired into space and hit the US.

The headquarters had been used by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to promote its aerospace efforts, including the 2022 launch of the Khayyam satellite, which Iran successfully launched using a Russian Soyuz rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

When that satellite successfully launched into space, it presented serious national security and intelligence concerns for Israel and the West.

Until yesterday’s attack on the site, Israeli officials were concerned that both the Khayyam and the latest space cooperation between Moscow and Tehran would increase Iran’s capabilities to launch ICBMs (intercontinental ballistic missiles), as well as improve its monitoring of targets in the Jewish state and throughout the region in the short-term.

An additional concern for Jerusalem was that Khayyam and future Russian-Iranian satellites could reduce Israeli spies’ ability to penetrate the Islamic Republic’s border with operations that hold back its nuclear progress.

Russian local authorities announced on Sunday that a woman was killed and more than 10 people were injured on Saturday evening in a drone attack carried out by Ukrainian forces targeting multi-story residential buildings in the city of Vasilyivka, Zaporizhzhia Oblast.

The Russian news agency TASS quoted Natalia Romanichenko, head of the Vasilyivka City Council, as saying that she expects the death toll to rise as the debris removal operation continues.

Romaniichenko explained that the first strike occurred around 10:00 PM, resulting in the near-total destruction of a residential building and the collapse of the entrance to another building on a neighboring street.

A fire also broke out, and windows in surrounding buildings were shattered. She confirmed that all the injured were taken to the regional hospital, which was on standby, and that none of their conditions were life-threatening.

The same official noted that Ukrainian forces continued to launch additional drone strikes during the rescue operations, in what appeared to be a deliberate targeting of civil defense teams while they were carrying out their duties.

She commended the resilience of the emergency personnel who continued their work despite the ongoing airstrikes and the presence of drones in the airspace.
