The federal government has slapped a $10,000 fine on Universal Ostrich Farms in Edgewood, British Columbia, closing out a months-long legal fight over an avian flu response that saw the entire ostrich flock killed without individual testing.
A federal tribunal upheld the penalty, siding with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, which accused the farm of failing to comply with reporting and disease-control requirements under the Health of Animals Act.
The dispute began after avian influenza was detected on the property. Rather than test each bird, the CFIA ordered all remaining ostriches destroyed, nearly a year after the first signs of the flu, including birds the owners said showed no symptoms and posed no risk.

The Trudeau government's use of the Emergencies Act in response to the Freedom Convoy protest was unconstitutional, the Federal Court of Appeal ruled.
The Federal Court of Appeal has unanimously affirmed a lower court ruling that found Justin Trudeau's use of the Emergencies Act in response to the Freedom Convoy protest was an unconstitutional action.
The ruling ends a lengthy legal process that began in 2022 when protesters from across Canada descended on Ottawa to oppose vaccine mandates and lockdowns imposed on the public in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
After a lengthy-but-peaceful demonstration in the nation's capital, Trudeau, then prime minister, used the country's most extreme legal measure as his government invoked the Emergencies Act to bring a violent, forceful end to the protest in February 2022.
This decision was ruled unconstitutional by Justice Richard Mosely in January 2024, who wrote that due to the “nature” and “broad powers” of the act, it should only be used as “a tool of last resort.”
The government, he said, “cannot invoke the Emergencies Act because it is convenient or because it may work better than other tools at their disposal or available to the provinces.”
The justice also said “threats to the security of Canada,” a significant requirement built into the act, were not met.
Rebel News previously reported how the Liberal government spent at least $2 million attempting to appeal Mosley's ruling.
“When consulted a few hours before the Act was invoked, most provinces expressed the view that provincial capacity and authority were not exceeded,” the Federal Court of Appeal ruling said, noting “the invocation of the Act would be divisive, unconstructive and unnecessary.”
Despite assertions from the government the Freedom Convoy posed a dire national security threat, “these concerns, as troubling as they might have been, were found in the preceding section of these reasons to be insufficient to ground a reasonable belief that a threat to national security existed at the time.”
The justices also weighed in on trade disruptions created by simultaneous demonstrations occurring in Alberta at the Coutts border crossing and in Ontario at the Ambassador Bridge in Niagara Falls.
“The trade-related impacts of the protests were not without repercussions for commerce,” the ruling noted, but suggested this did not create a risk to health and safety that necessitated using the Emergencies Act.
A key portion of the decision hinged on the right of peaceful protest laid out in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The appeal court agreed with the initial ruling that found the government's use of the Emergencies Act was “overbroad” as it swept up peaceful protesters alongside those committing more serious infractions.
“Although such individuals would not likely have been the focus of enforcement efforts by the police, they could nevertheless have been subject to enforcement actions,” the appeal decision said.
“This led the Federal Court to find that the right to freedom of expression of individual protesters who did not participate in the disruption of the peace was thus infringed,” the justices acknowledged.
Federal Court Justice Richard Mosley's decision was upheld unanimously by three Federal Court of Appeal justices.

In December, St. Jean Baptiste Parish in Morinville, Alberta, welcomed over 300 Catholics for its official reopening ceremony led by Bishop Gary Franken, following four years of rebuilding after arsonists burned it down.
“It was a really joyful moment for our parish,” parish pastor Fr. Trini Pinca told the Catholic Register. “And of course, for me, especially as a pastor, after enduring four years and a half of not having a church, moving from one school to another, maybe sometimes in the rectory, and not being able to decorate and celebrate.”
The newly restored church includes vivid paintings of Christ’s life, including his Baptism at the River Jordan by St. John the Baptist. The new church also contains stain-glassed windows donated by a Sherwood Park and four bells from a church in Quebec City.
In an interview with CBC News, Pinca compared the rebuilding of the parish to a phoenix rising over the ashes, saying, “One message that I have received after the fire was a message from my bishop back in the Philippines, and he just mentioned about the image of the phoenix rising.”

The Federal Court of Appeal has determined that the Liberal government improperly and illegally invoked the Emergencies Act (Canada’s equivalent to martial law) to disperse the convoy demonstrations in downtown Ottawa in February 2022.
This ruling, issued on Friday, rejected the federal government’s challenge to a 2024 lower court judgment that declared former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s invocation of the act unjustified and a violation of demonstrators’ rights under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
The three-judge panel emphasized that, despite the inconvenience and disruption caused by the protests, these events did not rise to the level of a genuine threat to national security. The judges stated that cabinet lacked sufficient reasonable grounds to conclude such a threat existed, thereby failing to meet the strict statutory requirements for invoking the legislation.

Over 100,000 Canadians sought medical care outside of the country last year as Liberals continue to prioritize assisted suicide over actual health care, according to a new report.
On January 13, the Fraser Institute published results from a survey of physicians across Canada, which found that 105,529 Canadians sought healthcare outside the country, amid month-long wait times to receive care in Canada.
“Clearly, the number of Canadians who ultimately receive their medical care in other countries is not insignificant,” the Fraser Institute concluded. “That a considerable number of Canadians travelled abroad and paid to escape the well-known failings of the Canadian health-care system speaks volumes about how well the system is working for them.”

As the US dollar hegemony system dies by design, the replacement is quickly being built into a digital infrastructure.
If you think the United States is actually fighting this, you're mistaken. It's simply a guise. The US government itself propped up China for trade going back to the 70s while creating the dollar system with Saudi Arabia.

The forced contraception was part of centuries of Danish policies that dehumanized Greenlanders and their families and included policies that removed young Inuit children from their parents.
The 1951 “Little Danes” experiment removed Inuit children from the country and sent them to live with Danish foster families for reeducation and controversial parental competency tests, which “resulted in the forced separation of Greenlandic families.”

China has filed requests to reserve orbital slots for almost 200,000 satellites, prompting concerns it may be positioning itself to control large swathes of near-Earth space, according to the Daily Mail.
The applications, submitted on December 29 by the newly formed Institute of Radio Spectrum Utilisation and Technological Innovation, outline two constellations—CTC-1 and CTC-2—each with 96,714 satellites spread across thousands of orbits. If built, the system would dwarf SpaceX’s Starlink plans and could restrict access for rival operators.
Officials have offered little detail about the satellites’ role, fuelling speculation about military or security uses. According to China in Space, Nanjing University of Aeronautics says the network would support “Low-altitude electromagnetic space security, integrated security defence systems, electromagnetic space security assessment of airspace, and low-altitude airspace safety supervision services.” Analysts say this closely resembles SpaceX’s military-focused Starshield system.
The Daily Mail writes that the filings were made with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), which allocates orbital spectrum. Toronto Police Service has declined to participate in the federal government’s gun grab program, according to Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree.
The decision comes as the Liberal government prepares alternative methods to collect prohibited firearms in Ontario, including the use of so-called mobile collection units. These units would be staffed by off-duty Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers or local police officers, the minister said.
The federal gun grab program is intended to compensate owners of firearms prohibited under recent gun control legislation. Ottawa has previously sought cooperation from municipal and provincial police services to assist with collection and enforcement.
Several provinces have also indicated they will not participate in administering the federal gun buyback program through their provincial or municipal police services, including Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
The federal government has said it is developing alternative collection methods in jurisdictions where local participation is not forthcoming.
Toronto police have not publicly detailed the reasons for their refusal, but police services across the country have raised concerns in the past about resource constraints and the use of local officers for federal initiatives.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has admitted that the “rules-based international order” was always a partially false narrative that countries knowingly upheld for decades because it benefited them.
During a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Tuesday, Carney said nations such as Canada prospered under and promoted a system they understood was not fully true.
“We knew the story of the international rules-based order was partially false, that the strongest would exempt themselves when convenient, that trade rules were enforced asymmetrically,” Carney said.
“And we knew that international law applied with varying rigor depending on the identity of the accused or the victim,” he added, comparing decades of compliance to a shopkeeper displaying a political sign he does not believe in, calling it “living within a lie” to “avoid trouble.”

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick was heckled by former Vice President Al Gore during a World Economic Forum (WEF) event in Davos, Switzerland on Tuesday, according to news coverage.
Gore booed Lutnick while the Commerce secretary was giving a speech at an invite-only dinner event hosted by BlackRock CEO Larry Fink, Mediaite reported on Wednesday. The report comes after Lutnick criticized Europe during his remarks, which prompted European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde to suddenly leave the dinner event, multiple outlets reported.
“I sat and listened to his remarks,” Gore said Wednesday in a statement provided to Mediaite. “I didn’t interrupt him in any way. It’s no secret that I think this administration’s energy policy is insane.”
“And at the end of his speech I reacted with how I felt, and so did several others,” Gore continued.
The WEF and a representative for Gore each did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
“During Secretary Lutnick’s three-minute speech, no one left hastily,” a Commerce Department spokesperson told the DCNF in a statement on Wednesday. “Only one person booed, and it was Al Gore.”
Moreover, Fox Business Network Senior Correspondent Charles Gasparino wrote in a Wednesday X post that he was told by a “reliable” anonymous source that “at the dinner Lagarde walked out BEFORE [Lutnick’s] speech and was tired like everyone is at Davos.”
Lutnick claimed in an op-ed published by the Financial Times on Tuesday that the Trump administration was “not going to Davos to uphold the status quo,” but instead was going “to confront it head-on.”
“For far too long, the fate of the global economy has been decided by an international establishment who took America’s economic power and gave it to the rest of the world,” Lutnick wrote. “Some of our past leaders believed the lies that offshoring was necessary, borders were not, and our national interest needed to submit to global lower cost of labour for the common good. That approach failed the US, crushed American workers and ripped apart most of the rest of the world as well. It destroyed industries, weakened supply chains and left working people in most western countries behind.”
Gore suggested Wednesday that U.S. government policy should promote “regenerative agriculture” during a panel discussion at the WEF. Gore added that the U.S. needs “policies that [are] in recognition of the fact that governments around the world typically do subsidize farming, but don’t subsidize them in ways that incentivize them to go in the wrong direction, but incentivize them to go in the right direction.”
Gore, the failed 2000 Democratic presidential nominee, is the cofounder and chairman of Generation Investment Management, and also the founder and chairman of The Climate Reality Project, a nonprofit organization which aims to combat the “climate crisis,” according to a biography on his website.

Crowds of Canadian citizens stood in long lines across Alberta for hours this week to sign a petition for a referendum on leaving Canada - officially titled "A Referendum Relating to Alberta Independence." The petition requires at least 177,000 signatures in order to trigger the referendum, which would ultimately decide if the province will separate.
Petitions have 120 days to collect the signatures needed. Pro-separation groups say they could get as many as 1 million signatures, which would be a clear indication that Alberta will leave Canada. Alberta's population is currently 5 million people.
Some petition locations reported as many as 10,000 signatures in a day and the public response is described as "concerning" by critics who want to remain part of Canada's "constitutional monarchy." Alberta is widely considered the most conservative province in the country and has been at odds with the far-left Canadian government (ruled by Ontario progressives).
The referendum would mean a simply Yes/No question for voters on separation. A majority (51% or more) would then lead to a legal process overseen by the Canadian federal government. Come polls indicate that 60% of Albertan citizens are still opposed to the measure, however, the recent turnout for the petition suggests the tide is turning. The federal government has hired a UK-based contractor to find out what Canadians think about Ottawa sending Canadian tax dollars to other countries.
According to a newly published contract award notice, Global Affairs Canada awarded a $62,500 non-competitive contract for a “Syndicated Research Study – Canadian Views on International Assistance” to Jennifer Hudson, whose listed business address is in London, England.
In other words, Ottawa is paying someone overseas to ask Canadians how they feel about Ottawa spending money overseas.
The contract was awarded on January 20, 2026, runs through July 31, 2026, and covers polling and public opinion research on Canada’s foreign aid programs. The procurement was conducted as a directed, non-competitive contract, with the government citing “exclusive rights” as the reason no other bids were considered.
While the research is supposedly about Canadian attitudes, the work itself is being handled outside the country by a contractor with no Canadian address listed in the procurement documents.
The contract comes as Canadians face rising costs of living at home, while the federal government continues to funnel billions into international assistance, development programs, and global initiatives.
Apparently, when Ottawa wants to know what Canadians think about that, the answer must first pass through London.

CBC says successful vendors must help implement the Corporation’s Workplace Strategy and its environmental commitments, with a “core objective” of selecting sustainable products from manufacturers who integrate environmental stewardship into everything they sell.
The winning supplier will be expected not only to furnish CBC offices nationwide, but also to support the development of an “intelligent, affordable and continuously evolving range of furniture products.” What exactly makes a desk intelligent — or how often a chair must evolve — is not specified.
The solicitation emphasizes that manufacturers must be well established in the Canadian market, suggesting CBC wants domestic suppliers.
The broadcaster continues to cut programming, lay off staff, and plead poverty while receiving nearly $1 billion annually in taxpayer funding.

Nationalist group Second Sons of Canada has caused a stir online after the organization posted a photo from a demonstration it held on an Ontario overpass to protest road deaths caused by what they allege are Indian truck drivers.
Around 40 members from the group held a black banner saying, “Indian trucks kill Canucks,” on an overpass in Orillia, Ontario, on Saturday.
The group spoke out about the protest on its social media accounts, saying it was trying to “raise awareness” about a growing problem on Canadian highways.
“Canadians are being killed and maimed in record numbers in transport truck collisions. This is not random; it is a direct result of a foreign diaspora population that has no regard for our standards or values,” Second Sons wrote.

In November 2024, Canada ordered ByteDance Ltd. to close its subsidiary TikTok Technology Canada Inc. But on Wednesday, that order was set aside by the Federal Court
TikTok will be able to continue operating its subsidiary in Canada for now, after a judge shelved a previous order for it to wind down — with the government’s apparent blessing.
In November 2024, under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Canada ordered ByteDance Ltd. to close its subsidiary TikTok Technology Canada Inc. But on Wednesday, that order was set aside by the Federal Court.
The decision came after a motion made by Canada’s government in TikTok’s appeal, with the court “noting the consent of the parties.”
The judge sent the matter back to Canada’s Industry Minister Melanie Joly “to undertake a new further review” under the Investment Canada Act.
The previous order followed a national security review with evidence and advice from Canada’s security and intelligence agencies, but did not ban the app, merely the company’s business operations in Canada.
A TikTok spokesperson welcomed the decision, and said the company looks forward “to working with the minister towards a resolution,” adding that the app has more than 14 million users in the country. That’s about one-third of the population.
“Keeping TikTok’s Canadian team in place will enable a path forward that continues to support millions of dollars of investment in Canada and hundreds of local jobs.”
University of Ottawa law professor Michael Geist said in a post on X that the move means the government has hit the “reset button” on the pre-existing ban.
This so-called reset comes days after Prime Minister Mark Carney was the first Canadian leader in more than eight years to visit China, where he announced a detente on tariffs and trade with President Xi Jinping.
Canada’s Innovation, Science and Economic Development department didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

On X Wednesday, pro-life Garnett Genuis, a father of five and an Alberta MP of the Conservative Party, shared the “Good News” as he called it.
“Good News. After the challenges we experienced with the student centre at York two weeks ago, the university’s administration stepped up to let us speak to students within a public space that they control,” he wrote.

Around 10,000 federal employees have been given notice this week that they may soon lose their jobs, according to the unions representing the workers.
The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) said that about 5,000 of its members received “workforce adjustment notices,” warning they may lose their jobs as the federal government looks to cut the public sector over the next three years.
“Public services aren’t just a budget line — they’re a lifeline for communities and families,” Sharon DeSousa, PSAC national president, said in a Jan. 23 news release.
DeSousa said that the job cuts will result in “slower services, longer waits, and weaker programs.”
The union said that the notices were given to 1,172 employees at Global Affairs Canada, 775 workers at Transport Canada, 598 employees at Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, 895 employees at Health Canada, 446 workers at Environment and Climate Change Canada, and 261 workers at Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
Other federal departments impacted by notices include Public Safety Canada (391 employees), Canadian Heritage (303 workers), Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (206 employees), Administrative Tribunals Support Service of Canada (22 workers), and the Canada School of Public Service (10 workers). Zhang became a prolific speculator in Beijing’s real estate market between 2005 and 2018, the December 2025 court ruling said. “I have concluded that the grievor is entitled to damages of $5,000 under s. 53(2)(e) of the [Canadian Human Rights Act],” adjudicator Christopher Rootham wrote in the decision, which was first reported by Blacklock’s Reporter.
Rootham wrote that Lemay was entitled to the damages due to the “pain and suffering” he experienced over the “loss of dignity and self-worth that he incurred by being placed on leave without pay.”
Rootham also said the employer was required to provide backpay for the time Lemay was on leave, including the benefits he would have received if he had remained on the job.
