Bone and Robotics Research Informing Future Missions as Crew Nears Departure

The Expedition 73 crew kicked off the week studying how to live and work in space during long-term missions including staying healthy in weightlessness and operating planetary robots from a spacecraft.

The seven International Space Station (ISS) residents also replaced flight hardware and continued preparing for a crew swap beginning at the end of the month.

Scientists studies into the long-term effects of reduced gravity on an astronaut’s body enable NASA and its international partners to plan safe and successful missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

Crews move around in microgravity with minimal effort; however, this affects their bodies in a similar way to how patients on Earth confined to bedrest experience. As a result, bones and muscles atrophy without daily exercise and proper nutrition.

Just one of many human research investigations taking place on the orbital outpost, the Bone on ISS study explores an astronaut’s bone health before, during, and after a spaceflight.

Station commander Takuya Onishi from JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) and Flight Engineer Nichole Ayers from NASA began their Monday with this experiment.

Onishi assisted Ayers as she performed a blood draw then processed the samples for spinning in a centrifuge. The samples were stowed in a science freezer for later analysis.

Results may provide insights into how an individual’s bones adjust to microgravity and help treat space-caused bone loss as well as Earthbound aging conditions.

NASA Flight Engineer Anne McClain spent her day on the CIPHER suite of 14 human research experiments tracking multiple aspects of a crew member’s health in space.

She processed her blood and urine samples for preservation and analysis for more insight into bone health and cardiovascular issues.

The knowledge gained may prepare an astronaut for different gravity environments such as the Moon or Mars and lead to advanced care for patients on Earth.

McClain, along with Onishi and Roscosmos Flight Engineer Kirill Peskov, spent time packing personal items for the ride back to Earth planned for early next month inside the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft.

Ayers began packing her gear last week. NASA Flight Engineer Jonny Kim explored ways to control robotic vehicles on a planetary surface from an orbiting spacecraft.

Working with engineers on the ground, Kim set up a laptop computer inside the Columbus laboratory module and tested space-to-ground robotic controlling methods.

The experiment tests a variety of technologies including consoles, touchscreens, haptics, and virtual reality goggles that may benefit future space exploration.

Results may also inform missions to asteroids and operations in disaster zones or inhospitable areas on Earth. Kim later partnered with Onishi and Ayers replacing flight hardware in the Tranquility module.

Roscosmos Flight Engineer Alexey Zubritsky assisted Peskov on Monday helping him get ready to end his stay aboard the orbiting lab.

Zubritsky set up biomedical hardware and applied sensors measuring Peskov’s blood flow as he wore the experimental lower body negative pressure suit.

The data is being collected to test the suit’s ability to pull fluids from the upper body and counteract space-caused head and eye pressure.

The suit operations may also help a crew member adapt quicker to the return to Earth’s gravity.

Zubritsky then inventoried a variety of computer and electronics hardware while Peskov reviewed Dragon departure procedures on a computer tablet.

Veteran Flight Engineer Sergey Ryzhikov videotaped his workout session on the advanced resistive exercise device helping researchers keep crews fit and healthy in space.

He spent the rest of his shift replacing electronics and fire protection hardware and cleaning ventilation systems throughout the space station’s Roscosmos segment.

Crew-10 joined the Expedition 72 crew when arriving to the station in March.

Throughout Expedition 72 and into Expedition 73, the crew aboard the space station contributed to hundreds of experiments, including testing expanded capabilities of existing hardware for pharmaceutical production in space, investigating how cells sense gravity, which is an important aspect of space biology, and examining the effects of microgravity on protein yields in microalgae, a potential source for life support, fuel, and food on long-duration missions.

The crew will depart the space station after the arrival of Crew-11 and a handover period. Ahead of Crew-10’s return, mission teams will review weather conditions at the splashdown sites off the coast of California prior to departure from station.

The mission is part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, which provides reliable access to space, maximizing the use of the station for research and development and supporting future missions beyond low Earth orbit by partnering with private companies to transport astronauts to and from the space station.

Humongous parachute for European Mars landing mission tested successfully

The European Space Agency (ESA) conducted a successful parachute test for the ExoMars Mars landing rover earlier this month, even as uncertainty looms over US involvement in the project.

The parachutes, which are designed to slow the descent of the ExoMars lander, have caused more than a few headaches for the development team. In 2019, a drop of the 35m parachute from about 35km up resulted in a test failure.

There were concerns that further setbacks would delay the mission, but as it turned out, the parachutes didn't hold things up – the system was successfully qualified in 2021. Russia's invasion of Ukraine, however, did.

ESA suspended the mission as it rethought its plans without Roscosmos' involvement.

In 2024, ESA and NASA inked an agreement to get the long-delayed Rosalind Franklin rover to the red planet. Then, Trump took office, and the proposed NASA budget cuts made it uncertain whether the space agency could contribute as planned.

Most recently, the US Senate Committee on Appropriations offered hope, restoring "not less than $73,900,000" for the mission [PDF] - just slightly less than the cost of moving the Space Shuttle between museums.

So testing the parachutes was a welcome distraction from the wrangling over the mission's future. The Register understands that the activity had long been planned and budgeted for outside of whatever squabbling might be happening in the US.

The test dropped a dummy ExoMars descent module from an altitude of almost 30 km, and its parachutes were successfully deployed.

There are two main parachutes: a first stage that is 15m wide, and a variant of the parachute used for the successful ESA Cassini-Huygens mission to Titan, Saturn's largest moon. The second is a 35m monster – and will be the largest parachute ever to open over Mars.

"Using two parachutes allows us to design a strong, medium-sized parachute to decelerate the probe through supersonic speeds and then a much larger, lightweight parachute for the final descent," said John Underwood, principal engineer at Vorticity, the UK company entrusted with parachute design and test analysis.

While the parachutes will scrub off a considerable amount of velocity, retro-rockets will be fired 20 seconds before touching down in order to avoid creating a surprise crater on the surface. Nobody needs another Schiaparelli incident.

The successful test took place at the Swedish Space Corporation's Esrange Space Center in Kiruna, northern Sweden, on 7 July.

Luca Ferracina, ESA's system engineer for the ExoMars landing module, said, "We are running this campaign to confirm our readiness for Mars, and to verify that the parachutes are still performing as expected after the long storage."

The move is a prudent one, and one that we fervently hope is a precursor to this mission, which one space agency insider called "snakebit," will finally reach Mars.

It would be a shame if the closest the carefully crafted ExoMars parachute system got to the red planet was almost 30km above the Arctic Circle. ®

Senate Majority Leader John Thune on Monday said the Federal Reserve should remain politically independentbut called for oversight of the central bank’s expensive headquarter renovations.

In comments to reporters, Thune said he didn’t know whether Fed Chair Jerome Powell could be fired over his management of the building upgrades, where costs have ballooned to $2.5 billion, but said when it comes to interest rates, the Fed is historically shielded from politics.

“That agency is supposed to be independent and operate sort of outside the whims of the political process,” he said. “So that seems to be kind of where — not notwithstanding the president obviously has an opinion about this — but that seems to be where he’s landing in terms of what he may or may not do.”

As for the headquarter renovations, the Republican leader said the issue “requires and demands some amount of oversight.”

White House Budget Director Russell Vought has been digging into the costs of the project, and Powell has also asked the Fed’s inspector general to look into it.

The central bank is self-funded, but its profits are given to the U.S. Treasury annually.

Thune’s remarks come as Trump and his administration have been escalating their attacks on Powell, who has held interest rates steady this year despite vehement calls from the president for lower borrowing costs. The Fed chief has said he is waiting to see how tariffs feed through to the economy before making any policy moves, though he expects to cut rates sometime later this year.

The senator said he met with Trump today but they did not discuss Powell.

The US Justice Department said Monday (July 21) that a Chinese-born US researcher admitted guilt to stealing trade secrets, including technology for detecting nuclear missile launches.

The man, identified as a 59-year-old Chenguang Gong, is a resident of San Jose, California.

Gong was charged with transferring over 3,600 files from his employer, a research and development company, to his personal storage devices.

In a central California district court, Gong pleaded guilty to one count of theft of trade secrets, facing up to 10 years in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for September 29.

Having become a US citizen in 2011, Gong briefly worked as an engineer in 2023 at a Los Angeles-area research and development company, which was not named, the Justice Department stated.

The stolen files included blueprints for infrared sensors used in space-based systems to detect nuclear missile launches and track ballistic and hypersonic missiles, per the Justice Department.

Additionally, Gong took blueprints for sensors enabling US military aircraft to detect incoming heat-seeking missiles and deploy countermeasures.

“The files Gong transferred include blueprints for sophisticated infrared sensors designed for use in space-based systems to detect nuclear missile launches and track ballistic and hypersonic missiles, as well as blueprints for sensors designed to enable US military aircraft to detect incoming heat-seeking missiles and take countermeasures, including by jamming the missiles’ infrared tracking ability,” the Justice Department wrote in a press release.

Between 2014 and 2022, while employed at various major US technology companies, Gong applied to join Chinese government-funded “Talent Programs,” the Justice Department noted.

These programs aim to recruit individuals with “expert skills, abilities, and knowledge of advanced sciences and technologies” to bolster China’s economy and military capabilities.

“Gong also transferred files containing trade secrets relating to the development of “next generation” sensors capable of detecting low observable targets while demonstrating increased survivability in space, as well as the blueprints for the mechanical assemblies used to house and cryogenically cool the victim company’s sensors.

This information was among the victim company’s most important trade secrets that are worth hundreds of millions of dollars,” the department noted.

Viasat to demonstrate communications tech for DIU's Hybrid Space Architecture initiative

CARLSBAD, California. Viasat was selected by the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) to prototype and demonstrate communications technologies for the Hybrid Space Architecture (HSA) initiative, the company announced in a statement.

HSA seeks to integrate civil, commercial, and military space assets into a unified network to improve operational resilience and situational awareness for U.S. and allied forces, the statement reads.

Viasat’s participation will focus on demonstrating intelligent network maneuverability through its software-defined networking platform, NetAgility.

The platform is designed to support dynamic, real-time routing across multi-orbit, multi-vendor satellite networks by leveraging mission and network situational awareness to optimize communications pathways, the company says.

These capabilities are intended to enable seamless interoperability across commercial and government networks, aligning with U.S. Space Force strategic objectives, according to the statement.

Demonstrations will occur across several combatant commands, including Indo-Pacific, European, Central, and Southern Commands, with initial events planned for later this year.

The HSA effort is led by DIU in coordination with U.S. Space Systems Command and other Department of Defense stakeholders.

Scientists use X-rays to remotely measure magnetic reconnection in near-Earth space

The magnetosphere, formed by Earth's magnetic field, acts as a protective shield that deflects solar wind—the flow of charged particles constantly streaming from the sun toward our planet.

This magnetic barrier protects our atmosphere and the technology we increasingly depend on in near-Earth space, such as communication satellites.

However, the magnetosphere isn't impenetrable, as a fundamental process called "magnetic reconnection" can temporarily strip this barrier during intense solar wind and cause violent energy fluctuations in near-Earth space.

As human activity in this region increases, understanding and forecasting such space weather becomes critical.

A key to understanding these breaches lies in measuring what's known as the "reconnection rate," which quantifies energy efficiency in magnetic reconnection processes.

For decades, scientists have attempted to measure this rate using various methods, including spacecraft flying directly through reconnection zones and observations of solar flares by remote imaging.

However, these traditional approaches provide only local snapshots of the magnetic reconnection process or are limited by specific, often unsteady conditions.

Obtaining a comprehensive and consistent picture that bridges the gap between local and global reconnection rates remains a challenge.

Against this backdrop, a research team led by Associate Professor Yosuke Matsumoto from the Institute for Advanced Academic Research at Chiba University, Japan, is testing an innovative approach using soft X-ray imaging to measure the reconnection rates.

The study, co-authored by Mr. Ryota Momose from Chiba University and Prof. Yoshizumi Miyoshi from Nagoya University, was made available online on June 23, 2025, and was published in Volume 52, Issue 12 of the journal Geophysical Research Letters on June 28, 2025.

Soft X-ray emission occurs through a charge exchange process between the heavy ions in the solar wind and the hydrogen neutral atoms originating from Earth.

In this study, the researchers propose leveraging the soft X-rays that are naturally emitted when solar wind particles interact with the boundaries of the magnetosphere to remotely measure reconnection rates across much larger regions than previously possible.

The team conducted advanced computer simulations on the Fugaku supercomputer, combining high-resolution global magnetohydrodynamic simulations of Earth's magnetosphere with a model of soft X-ray emission.

From the simulations, they analyzed how reconnection-related X-rays can be viewed from a satellite positioned at a lunar distance during intense solar wind conditions.

This vantage point roughly matches that of an upcoming X-ray imaging satellite like GEO-X, which is scheduled for launch in the near future.

After analyzing the simulation results, the researchers found that the brightest X-ray emissions form distinct cusp-shaped patterns that directly reflect the magnetic field structure around reconnection zones.

By measuring the opening angle of these bright regions, they calculated the global reconnection rate to have a value of 0.13, which closely matches theoretical predictions and previous laboratory measurements.

Hubble spots interstellar invader Comet 3I/ATLAS for the first time

The Hubble Space Telescope has caught its first glimpse of comet 3I/ATLAS. The comet is just the third object humanity has observed entering the solar system from beyond its limits.

Prior to 3I/ATLAS, the previous two "interstellar invaders" were 1I/'Oumuamua, spotted in 2017, and 2I/Borisov, detected in 2019.

Both have now left the solar system, though other interstellar bodies are predicted to dwell undetected in our cosmic backyard.

As Space.com reported on July 11, recent research suggested that 3I/ATLAS could be even more exciting than initially perceived, as its trajectory through the solar system indicates it comes from a region of the Milky Way older than our 4.6 billion-year-old solar system.

With an estimated age of 7 billion years, that would make 3I/ATLAS the oldest comet we've ever seen.

Astrophysics undergrad student astrafoxen alerted his followers to the Hubble images of 3I/ATLAS via this Bluesky feed.

"Hubble Space Telescope images of interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS are out! These were taken 5 hours ago. Plenty of cosmic rays peppering the images, but the comet's coma looks very nice and puffy.

Best of luck to the researchers trying to write up papers for this... " the post reads.

One such paper is already available, albeit as a preprint. Describing optical and near-infrared spectroscopy performed on 3I/ATLAS, the research reveals that:

"3I/ATLAS is an active interstellar comet containing abundant water ice, with a dust composition more similar to D-type asteroids than to ultrared trans-Neptunian objects."

D-type asteroids are space rocks packed with organic molecule-rich silicates and carbon with water ice in their interiors. The arrival of 3I/ATLAS into the solar system has initiated an exciting period for astronomers.

Since the solar system interloper was spotted on July 1, 2025, by the ATLAS survey telescope, an array of other instruments have attempted to get in on the act by spotting the comet.

One project that will be trying to get a good look at 3I/ATLAS is the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, which observes the universe near and far with the largest digital camera ever built.

That is fitting, as the comet from beyond the solar system was actually first spotted as scientists were preparing to make observations with Rubin.

The new observatory, which released its first images of the cosmos on June 23, 2025, is expected to discover between 5 and 50 interstellar objects as they zip through the solar system during the observatory's decade-long Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST).

In the meantime, 3I/ATLAS can enjoy the undivided attention of astronomers aiming to study interstellar bodies with a view to painting an intimate picture of planetary systems beyond our own.

SpaceX aborted the launch of two communications satellites just before liftoff on Monday evening (July 21).

A Falcon 9 rocket topped with two of SES' O3b mPOWER internet spacecraft was set to launch from Florida's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at 5:27 p.m. EDT (2127 GMT) on Monday.

But it didn't quite happen: SpaceX called an abort just 11 seconds before liftoff. The launch window extended for another 90 minutes or so, but the company soon decided to stand down for the day.

"Standing down from today’s launch of the @SES_Satellites O3b mPOWER mission and now targeting tomorrow, July 22 for liftoff. Vehicle and payload remain healthy," SpaceX said via X on Monday evening.

At the time of this article's publication, the company had not yet explained what caused the abort.

The two-hour launch window on Tuesday opens at 5:12 p.m. EDT (2112 GMT). SpaceX will stream the action live via its website and X account, beginning about 15 minutes before liftoff.

Luxembourg-based SES' mPOWER constellation consists of eight satellites in medium-Earth orbit, all of which have been launched by SpaceX.

The son of former President Joe Biden claimed he would use military pressure to return migrants deported under Trump.

Hunter Biden, son of former US President Joe Biden, has said he would threaten El Salvador with military action to force the return of foreign nationals deported there during Donald Trump’s presidency.

Speaking in an interview published on Monday with YouTuber Andrew Callaghan, Biden criticized Trump-era immigration policies and urged Democrats to adopt a more aggressive approach, even in the face of anti-immigrant sentiment among American voters.

”[If I were president] I would pick up the phone and call the f*cking president of El Salvador and say, ‘You either f*cking send them back or I’m going to f*cking invade.’ It's a f*cking crime what they're doing,” Hunter Biden said.

He referred to both Trump and Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele as “dictator thugs,” and described the high-security prison in Tecoluca – a centerpiece of El Salvador’s anti-gang crackdown – as a “concentration camp” where “if you’re not dead, you would want to be dead.”

The Trump administration’s hardline immigration policies, which include mass deportations of suspected gang members, have sparked controversy and led to multiple protests against US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Critics say many deportees were denied due process, while Trump supporters maintain the measures were necessary to protect the public.

Over the course of a three-hour interview, Biden praised his father’s legacy while condemning Democratic officials who suggested the party should soften its immigration stance following Trump’s return to the White House in 2024.

”All these Democrats say, you have to talk about and realize that people are really upset about illegal immigration? F*ck you!” he said, emphasizing the economic contributions of undocumented workers, particularly in low-wage sectors.

Advocacy groups have long noted that fear of retaliation or deportation prevents many undocumented laborers from challenging exploitation and contributes to suppressed wages across the US economy.

At least five civilians have been killed and several others injured in a series of Ukrainian drone strikes on vehicles in Russia’s Kherson Region over the past 24 hours, according to regional officials.

On Monday, Kherson Region Governor Vladimir Saldo said three civilians were killed when a Ukrainian drone struck a private bus in the Golopristansky district in the region’s south.

He added that three more civilians were “gravely injured” and were taken to a local hospital.

In another incident in the same district, Saldo said an artillery shell hit a passenger car, injuring two civilians, who were also hospitalized.

Two more civilians were wounded in the town of Nova Kakhovka to the north of Golopristansky district, in what Saldo described as a “terrorist attack” that struck another civilian vehicle.

Separately, the city administration of Nova Kakhovka said a minibus was damaged in a Ukrainian drone strike, with two people dying at the scene.

Another victim of the strike was hospitalized, officials said, releasing a picture of a badly damaged vehicle, with a blurred body lying on the ground nearby.

Russian officials have repeatedly accused Ukrainian forces of attacking civilian targets in frontline areas.

In February, officials in Russia’s Zaporozhye Region reported that a school bus was attacked by a Ukrainian drone, injuring the driver and five children.

In November, local authorities said four people were killed and 17 injured when a Ukrainian artillery strike hit a passenger bus in Kherson Region.

Ozzy Osbourne has died 'surrounded by love' at the age of 76, a statement from his family said.

The Black Sabbath frontman had performed from a throne on stage at Villa Park in Birmingham less than three weeks ago.

In a statement, his family said tonight: 'It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love.'

The rocker was able to bid an emotional farewell to his fans on stage this month as he reunited with his original Black Sabbath bandmates Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward for the first time since 2005.

'You've no idea how I feel - thank you from the bottom of my heart,' Osbourne told the crowd in his final speech.

The star was a titan of music who somehow survived controversies that would end the careers of many others, and weathered health problems that would leave most of us on our backs.

Whether it was biting the head off both a bat and a dove, snorting a line of ants or urinating on a US war memorial while wearing one of his wife Sharon's dresses, Osbourne was defined by his antics both on and off stage.

His death ends the final chapter of a life that was marked by both dizzying success and fame but also scandal, abuse and even prison time.

The singer, who sold more than 100 million records, will forever be synonymous with the heavy metal band he formed in his home city of Birmingham with Tony Iommi, Bill Ward and Geezer Butler in 1969.

With hits that included Iron Man, War Pigs and Paranoid, Black Sabbath's pushing of occult themes proved both hugely popular and controversial, with a future pope even condemning Osbourne for his 'subliminal satanic influence'.

Osbourne's most infamous moment came when he bit the head off a bat that had been thrown on stage during a solo performance. He later claimed he thought it was made of rubber.

After being thrown out of the band in 1979 due to his drug-fuelled antics, Osbourne forged a hugely successful solo career, with hits that included Crazy Train and Hellraiser.

But his hellraising off stage continued. In 1989 he attempted to kill Sharon while high on drugs, and seven years before that he urinated on the treasured Alamo Cenotaph in Texas, an act that saw him banned from San Antonio for a decade.

He was also injured in a quad bike crash at his UK home in 2003, an episode that had a serious impact on his fragile health.

Yet there was also redemption for the troubled singer, who relaunched himself as a reality tv star in The Osbournes in the early 2000s, after getting clean from drink and drugs with the help of Sharon.

It saw two of his and Sharon's children, Kelly and Jack, become stars in their own right, whilst their other daughter Aimee declined to appear.

Osbourne's final performance with Black Sabbath came in 2025, when he reunited with his bandmates for a final gig at Aston Villa's Villa Park stadium in Birmingham.

Having then suffered from Parkinson's disease for more than five years, he was seated for much of the farewell performance.

Born John Michael Osbourne on December 3, 1948, the singer was raised by his parents Lilian and John with three older sisters and two younger brothers in a small two-bedroom home in Birmingham.

The family of eight grew up poor and Ozzy said it was difficult because his parents were always fighting about money.

The only subject that caught his attention at school was music and he performed in several productions of Gilbert & Sullivan operettas.

The Open Source Project DeFlock Is Mapping License Plate Surveillance Cameras All Over the World

DeFlock has mapped the locations of more than a thousand ALPRs around the United States and thousands more around the world.

On his drive to move from Washington state to Huntsville, Alabama, Will Freeman began noticing lots of cameras.

“So I moved to Alabama, and on my way there, once I started getting into the South, I saw a ton of these black poles with a creepy looking camera and a solar panel on top,” Freeman told me. “I took a picture of it and ran it through Google, and it brought me to the Flock website. And then I knew like, ‘Oh, that’s a license plate reader.’ I started seeing them all over the place and realized that they were for the police. And I didn’t like that.”

Flock is one of the largest vendors of automated license plate readers (ALPRs) in the country. The company markets itself as having the goal to fully “eliminate crime” with the use of ALPRs and other connected surveillance cameras, a target experts say is impossible.

In Huntsville, Freeman noticed that license plate reader cameras were positioned in a circle at major intersections, forming a perimeter that could track any car going into or out of the city’s downtown. He started to look for cameras all over Huntsville and the surrounding areas, and soon found that Flock was not the only game in town. He found cameras owned by Motorola, and a third, owned by a company called Avigilon (a subsidiary of Motorola). Flock and automated license plate reader cameras owned by other companies are now in thousands of neighborhoods around the country. Many of these systems talk to each other and plug into other surveillance systems, making it possible to track people all over the country.

“It went from me seeing 10 license plate readers to probably seeing 50 or 60 in a few days of driving around,” Freeman said. “I wanted to make a record of these things. I thought, ‘Can I make a database of these license plate readers?’”

And so he made a map, and called it DeFlock. DeFlock runs on Open Street Map, an open source, editable mapping software. He began posting signs for DeFlock to the posts holding up Huntsville’s ALPR cameras, and made a post about the project to the Huntsville subreddit, which got good attention from people who lived there. People have been plotting not just Flock ALPRs, but all sorts of ALPRs, all over the world.

The Royal Navy has conducted a pioneering trial demonstrating the launch and recovery of uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUVs) from a submarine, expanding the capabilities of the UK’s nuclear-powered attack submarines.

According to a news update received by the UK Defence Journal, the trial took place in the Mediterranean under Project Scylla.

The exercise successfully tested the use of torpedo tubes to deploy and retrieve autonomous systems designed for underwater reconnaissance, communication, and seabed warfare missions.

Project Scylla is being delivered through AUKUS Pillar 2, which focuses on developing advanced defence technologies to strengthen security across both the Indo-Pacific and Euro-Atlantic regions.

The trial represents an early milestone in integrating such technologies into frontline operations.

Commodore Marcus Rose, Deputy Director for Underwater Battlespace Capabilities, said:

“Delivery of these trials demonstrates our commitment to the use of advanced capabilities as part of a future hybrid Fleet and are a big step forward in delivering new capability to the Submarine Service.”

The Royal Navy said that trials such as this form part of its Atlantic Bastion ambition, which aims to incorporate advanced technologies including autonomous systems and artificial intelligence to boost the effectiveness of the Fleet in contested environments.

The trial was conducted by the Submarine Delivery Agency’s Autonomy Unit, in partnership with L3Harris, a key industry provider of autonomous maritime systems.

China on Monday (July 21) conducted a warfare demonstration showcasing a wide array of uncrewed systems, in an attempt to position itself as a major global drone supplier.

State media CCTV reported that the exercise was held at an Inner Mongolia testing ground, and it simulated the “seizure and control of critical border locations.”

The drill featured six phases of a futuristic battlefield scenario, including reconnaissance, AI planning, infiltration, aerial attack, elimination, and anti-access, deploying various Chinese-made systems.

Displayed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) included ISR drones, long- and short-range loitering munitions, uncrewed helicopters, and tactical first-person view (FPV) devices.

Ground systems, such as smart command-and-control units and anti-drone defences, were also showcased.

A rare live-fire demonstration featured the OW-5 anti-drone laser weapon, whose “high-energy beam barely visible to bare eyes” downed a drone “a few kilometres away,” CCTV reported.

Unveiled statically at the 2021 Zhuhai air show, the upgraded OW5-A50, with a 50-kilowatt output, integrates command-and-control, radar, sensors, and a laser gun on an 8x8 Dongfeng truck, enabling standalone or networked air defence.

CCTV highlighted laser weapons’ ability to instantly destroy targets with unlimited ammunition, dependent on the power supply.

The exercise demonstrated drone-artillery coordination, with a 155mm howitzer engaging targets using real-time UAV-transmitted coordinates.

Small tactical drones, including a flying jammer disrupting electro-optical equipment over several kilometres, were also featured.

Notable drones included the Flying Frog (VTOL reconnaissance), Flying Falcon (high-speed loitering munition), Black Bee (grenade-throwing), and Flying Whale (bomb-dropping).

“With these smart partners, our infantry soldiers can evolve into future nodes with full-domain situational awareness and precision strikes, to win by intelligence on the modern battlefield,” CCTV stated.

Norinco, China’s largest arms manufacturer and exporter, organised the event, unveiling its Feilong (Flying Dragon) loitering munitions family.

The series includes the anti-personnel Feilong-10, with a range under 10km, and the Feilong-300A, an anti-radiation drone targeting air defence radars up to 300km away.

The Feilong-60 serves as a reconnaissance source or hoverable cruise missile, launchable from rocket systems, while the Feilong-30 adapts to trucks, vehicles, or ships.

These drones can form a networked swarm for saturated attacks, per CCTV.

Bill Clinton wrote a 'warm and gushing' letter which was included in Jeffrey Epstein's infamous 50th 'birthday book', The Mail on Sunday can reveal.The former US president was one of hundreds who contributedto a heavy leather-bound, gold-embossed album of letters that Epstein's ex-lover Ghislaine Maxwell took more than a year to compile leading up to the landmark date. Mr Clinton's letter is one page and is embossed with: 'From the desk of William Jefferson Clinton' at the top.

Donald Trump is now suing The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) for $10billion (£7.46billion) for a story published last week alleging his contribution to the book was a 'sexually suggestive' and 'bawdy' letter to Epstein, framed by the outline of a naked woman with Mr Trump's signature mimicking pubic hair. It's not my language, it's not my words.'

Mr Trump has said he parted ways with Epstein before allegations against him became public in 2006.

The Mail on Sunday has learned Maxwell, currently serving 20 years in jail on child sex trafficking charges, began asking Epstein's friends for contributions to the birthday book at the end of 2001. It was presented to Epstein, who was later convicted of being a paedophile, on his 50th birthday, on January 20, 2003.

Prince Andrew and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson – both friends of Epstein at that time –are also believedto have contributed letters to the book alongside Mr Clinton, who regularly flew in Epstein's private jet, dubbed 'the Lolita Express'.

Last night, a source said: 'Ghislaine asked everyone they knew and that included presidents, princes and kings. 'Bill Clinton wrote a warm and gushing letter.It was one page and profuse in its admiration for Jeffrey.' The MoS has been told Epstein's close friend, Harvard scholar Henry Rosovsky, former New Mexico governor Bill Richardson and computer pioneer Marvin Minsky also all contributed letters. The WSJ claimed Epstein's lawyer Alan Dershowitz wrote a letter but he has yet to comment about the claim.

The whereabouts of the original book is not known.

It is thoughtto havebeen seized during one of the raids on Epstein's homesin Florida and New York, where Maxwell kept 'dozens of albums' filled with pictures of their trips together including holidays to visit Prince Andrew at Balmoral, Buckingham Palace and Windsor. A source claimed the WSJ's story was based on a 'poor facsimile' copy of the alleged Trump letter and said: 'The book is now sitting in a storage facility somewhere, if it still exists.

'What was in the evidence pile were poor-quality copies of single pages, not a copy of the whole book.' On Friday, Ms Bondi backtracked and filed court documents seeking the release of Grand Jury testimony in both the Maxwell and Epstein cases.

Epstein died in jail in 2019 as he awaited trial on child sex trafficking charges. His death was officially ruled a suicide but Maxwell's brother Ian told the Mail yesterday he believed the billionaire was murdered. His sister is currently seeking an appeal in the Supreme Court. Sources say it is unlikely that Prince Andrew will be mentioned in either tranche of documents.

The FBI has closed the investigation into Andrew and a source close to the probe said: 'The timelines of the cases are not when Andrew would have been around.' (If the FBI under Trump's first term got the book, they probably would have released it, as part of the coup.)

Drone warfare’s expansion endangers non-combatants. Criminals’ homemade grenades lack precision, damaging homes and causing unintended deaths.

Correa recounts a tragic incident: “The grenades are hand-made by them. The targeting system is not very precise.

There was a 10-year-old kid who was killed by one of these grenades in the middle of a town.”

Military personnel also suffer, with about 60 troops wounded and four killed in the past two years. One victim, 20-year-old soldier Edison Guerrero, died in May near the Venezuelan border during a patrol.

His sister, Noralba Rodríguez, shared her anguish: “This war doesn’t make any sense.” As criminals refine their drone skills, Bonilla warns that they currently hold the upper hand in this evolving aerial domain.

U.S. officials told a Senate committee on Tuesday that there have been more than 3,000 drone events near American airports since 2021, including 11 aircraft this year that reported taking evasive action to avoid collisions.

Those drone incidents have caused significant flight delays at times near major airports, said Steven Willoughby, a counter drone official with the Homeland Security Department, who told the Senate Judiciary Committee that in two instances drones collided with aircraft conducting critical response operations during emergencies in California and Texas this year.

Officials also raised concerns about the intentional use of drones for attacks, and also at major sporting events. They also point to major upcoming events like the 2026 World Cup.

Of around 90,000 special events annually where the FBI could have had counter drone protection, it was only used in about 0.05% of events, according to testimony from the Department of Justice and the FBI.

"We cover the Super Bowl, right? What about the other 200-plus NFL games that are happening?" Willoughby said. "We can’t be everywhere all the time."

Sports leagues have also urged Congress to take action. Some tethered drones are used by broadcasters to provide aerial coverage.

Senators and administrative officials said Congress needs to change laws to toughen penalties for drone use and to give federal agencies new expanded authority to address drones that may be used to threaten the public or events.

Congress in 2018 expanded authority of the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security to disable or destroy threatening drones and that has been repeatedly temporarily extended.

New legislation would expand federal coverage for airports and critical infrastructure like power plants, oil refineries or chemical facilities and high-risk prisoner transports.

It would also allow state and local law enforcement to directly take down drones without waiting for federal authorities.

Senator John Cornyn said "it just strikes me we are woefully unprepared." Senator Ted Cruz added "drones pose an immediate and growing threat to our national security."

Willoughby noted that since 2018, the Secret Service has tracked hundreds of drones violating temporary flight restrictions that protect the president and others, while the FBI and Justice Department said drones used as espionage technology within the United States is also increasing.

Willoughby added that in the last six months of 2024, over 27,000 drones were detected within 500 meters of the U.S. southern border.

A man pleaded guilty in June after he was charged with violating defense airspace after he flew a drone over the NFL AFC Championship game in Baltimore in January;

in September, a Boston man was charged with unlawfully flying a drone near the finish line of the April 2024 Boston Marathon, which prompted law enforcement to seize it mid-air and land it.

At least $9.6 billion of specifically identified illicit payments were made by SCB from its NYC branch to OFAC and known terrorist names. The $9.6 billionwas found in internal trade reports turned over by bank whistleblowers and represents the first batch from SCB Dubai office that cleared through SCB NYC. There are estimated over $100 billion more of illegal payments that are more recentand from SCB China where it has 53 mainland branches that facilitate dollar trade payments for oil and war-making materials.

These payments were hidden by SCB from required disclosure in its ongoing Deferred Prosecution Agreement now under the jurisdiction of DCUSA Pirro and SDNY Clayton where both were briefed on SCB after their appointments. There are career blockers at each jurisdiction.

Involvement by the NYAG

In early 2024, NYAG was briefed by terrorist financing experts and the whistleblowers in detail on the illicit payments yet did nothing about it other than reapprove SCB annual license.

NYAG was briefed in two meetings in February and March 2024 about the $9,6 billion of illegal payments and did nothing but approve the annual renewal of SCB State banking license.One of meetings was recorded and clearly shows that NYAG officials recognized the payments were not previously known and not in prior SCB sanctions settlements. Five NYAG senior staff including Letitia James Deputy Scott Spiegleman were in all meetings. In late 2024, Spiegleman went to work for IBM which has a large tech contract running the SWIFT platform.IBM Promontory advised SCB to hide currency trade data.

Involvement by the Federal Reserve

The Fed, along with its wire operations platform SWIFT, failed to block the SCB payments to sanctioned names – ignoring the Treasury OFAC and SDGT lists. The COO of SWIFT, Cheri McGuire had been at SCB where she was directly involved in SCB hiding its currency trades. Cheri McGuire was approved by the Fed and is now COO of SWIFT – designated under Dodd-Frank as a Systematically Important Financial Market Utility quasi-regulated by the Fed. The Eastern District of Virginia USA is also considering investigation because SWIFT its US headquarters in VA.

With all oil trade required to be in $USD, China is using Standard Chartered Bank (“SCB”) and it’s NYC branch to buy Iranian oil in $USD. Maximum Pressure is being thwarted by a lack of enforcement by the Fed and the SWIFT system – each have ignored the Treasury sanction designations.

Recommendations:

Direct USA Pirro to prosecute SCB for breach of its Deferred Prosecution Agreement; Direct SDNY Clayton to intervene and prosecute SCB in the case now in the US Second Circuit.

Retract delegated authority from the Fed returning it to Treasury to enforce Maximum Pressure. End any operating agreement the Fed has with Brussels-based Society for Worldwide International Financial Transactions and merge its operations into Treasury.

Background

The SCB evasion case is a rare situation where inside whistleblowers turned over 40,000 emails that contained the currency trade records for several years. SCB attempted to hide 100% of their currency trades. The internal whistleblowers were fired and filed suit in a case now on appeal in the US Second Circuit. Obama and Biden career DOJ officials (John-David Barnea in SDNY, Gregg Maisell in DCUSA, and Matthew Komar FBI) have been blocking action on this case since 2024 because it was likely that news of $9.6 billion in specific evasion payments made by a NYC bank branch to known sanctioned terrorist and Iran linked entities would be embarrassing to a Biden campaign. Enforcing the sanctions laws on the currently known sanctions evasion payments in this case will yield the US more than $10 billion in settlements, while full investigation of the SCB China oil trade payments is likely to be a much higher amount of proceeds to the US. SCB knowingly and frequently violated its obligations to self-report SARS to Treasury FinCen and excluded 100% of its F/X trades in breach of its Deferred Prosecution Agreements of 2015, and 2019.

Whistleblowers in late 2023 realized they were in possession of all the SCB’s internal trade reports over a 6-year period that formed the basis of SCB’s prior sanctions evasion settlements and DPAs.

After 3 meetings (one recorded) with SDNY USA Damian Williams and NY AG Letitia James senior staff in 2024 where the new sanctions evasions evidence was presented, Brutus alleges a coverup began.

FBI agent Matthew Komar, Treasury’s Alexander Manfull, and SDNY’s Jean-David Barnea made false statements to the Court claiming the SCB’s currency trades had been includedeven though the $9.6 billion to the 92 SDGT entities were not previously listed in the DPA’s nor part of prior settlements.

Based on these shocking findings and the change in DOJ’s case posture in 2024, Brutus moved to re-open its case against SCB.Biden DOJ denied the existence of any of the currency trades that had been in the 75 excel files given to the Government by Brutus as evaluated by Declarant David Scantling, a terrorism financing expertand former Assistant Secretary of Defense for Counter Terrorism who evaluated a subset of 551,000 trades to find the 92 entities on the OFAC / SDGT list.

New OFAC / SDGT entities uncovered include Euro African Group Ltd, majority owned by Mohommed Bazzi, the lead global Hizballah financing agent, Koussani Steel, Kuwait Automotive Group, Bank d’Algeria, Iranian oil trading cutouts and know SDGT proxies, and Bank of Gambia.

NPR’s news chief Edith Chapin — who has served as the chief editor since 2023 — is stepping down from her role by the end of the year, an email to staffers revealed.

“Two years with two big executive jobs has been a comprehensive assignment,” Chapin wrote in a memo obtained by the Washington Post. “I love journalism, it has been my life for more than 35 years, and I will keep championing it for many more years.”

She added that she plans to “reset after a few months of a career break.” Her last day has not been explicitly stated, however, as she wrote, “I’ll be here for a while.”

NPR chief executive Katherine Maher wrote in a memo to staffers on Tuesday that Chapin — who has been with NPR in various capacities since 2012 — made the decision roughly two weeks ago, writing, “Edith has been an indispensable partner during my first year at NPR, a steady leader for a large part of this organization, and a fantastic collaborator as a member of the executive team.”

“She didn’t bat an eye when I walked in the door, and has shown me the ropes around this place with patience and sincerity. When it comes to steely fortitude in service of the mission, I sure wouldn’t want anyone else in our foxhole,” Maher continued.

This news comes as NPR goes through another major transition, as broadcasting institutions NPR and PBS are losing their flow of taxpayer dollars thanks to President Donald Trump’s rescission bill.

The Financial Times reports broadcasting institutions NPR and PBS would lose their flow of taxpayer dollars when the package, which the Republican-led Senate approved after 2 a.m. by 51 votes to 48, is signed into law.

Kentucky Senate Republican candidate Rep. Andy Barr (R-KY) has bankrolled prominent Republican sponsors of a recently proposed bill that would provide amnesty to illegal aliens.

Barr hopes to replace the outgoing Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), saying, “In the Senate, no one will fight harder to keep the border closed and deport illegals.”

He wrote on his campaign website, “Andy Barr believes we must deport all illegals and close the border.”

The Kentucky Republican also attacked MAGA Republicans who want to deport illegal aliens and curb immigration as “nativists,” in a similar vein to Hillary Clinton accusing Donald Trump of embracing a nativist political movement.

Barr told Red, White, and Bluegrass host Bode Brooks, “At the same time, our agriculture sector, our hospitality sector in Kentucky, they certainly need legal workers, the horse industry, I’ve had the privilege of representing them and the great thing about the president’s policies that will secure the border and keep our communities safe is that it will create the opportunity to streamline our overly bureaucratic legal guest worker programs so that our signature industries have the labor they need.”

The Kentucky Republican remarked, “Some of these ‘nativists,’ frankly, are directly at odds with the agriculture sector in Kentucky. We are a nation of immigrants, but we are also a nation of laws.”

It appears that Barr has financial backed Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL) and ten other House Republicans that introduced the Dignity Act, a bill to provide amnesty to illegal aliens.

Former Breitbart News Executive Chairman and War Room host Steve Bannon described these Republicans as “traitorous.”

The National Review chastised the bill, writing, “Congress should read the signs of the time and reject this bill as yet another attempt to sneak mass amnesty by an American people who have been demanding law and order for decades.”

The Trump administration shot down this proposal, summarily stating, “The president made it clear he will not support amnesty for illegal aliens in any way.”

It appears that Barr has backed Salazar and many of the lawmakers backing the bill.

Building America’s Republican Representation PAC, Barr’s leadership PAC, has donated $10,500 to Salazar’s congressional campaign since 2020.

Valadao has long called for amnesty, saying in 2013, “Addressing immigration reform in the House cannot wait. I am serious about making real progress and will remain committed to doing whatever it takes to repair our broken immigration system.”

He even voted against a bill proposed by then-Rep. and now-Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) to stop Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) amnesty program.

Bacon has said he backs amnesty to illegal aliens, including those in the DACA program.

“I do think the President’s willing, and I’m surely willing, to have a balanced approach. I personally think people came here as kids, no fault of their own, and we should have a plan for them,” Bacon said in January.

According to Circling the News, Two FireAid concerts with live streams were held at the Intuit Dome and the Kia Forum on January 30 in Los Angeles. An A-list of performers donated their time to raise money for fire victims.

More than $100 million came through donations. This editor reached out to the Annenberg Foundation, which was tasked with distributing funds, in April to find out how fire victims could receive direct financial help.

The answer was the money was intended for nonprofits, no individual could receive money even though it was intended for fire victims.

An Alabama man is accused of tying children up in an underground bunker and allowing men to pay roughly $200 to sexually abuse them.

Andres Velazques-Trejo, 29, William Chase McElroy, 21, and Dalton Terrell, also 21, are jailed in connection with the horrific sex abuse and human trafficking of at least six children between the ages of 3 and 10 for more than a year.

A fourth person, Timothy St. John, a 23-year-old Bibb County resident, was later arrested in Chilton County on charges of rape, sodomy, human trafficking, kidnapping, bestiality and cruelty to animals.

“He would tie one child to the bed, one child to a chair and one to one of the support poles,” Bibb County Assistant District Attorney Bryan Jones said of Velazques-Trejo.

“Then he would allow people to pay to have sex with the children,” Jones said. “It’s hard to fathom that someone can do this to a child.”

Bibb County Sheriff Jody Wade announced the indictments over the weekend.

Jones on Tuesday described the underground bunker as the basement of an old house at or near the home of a family member of McElroy.

The basement had been converted, at some point, to be used as a storm shelter and that’s where the repeated abuse took place between January 2024 and earlier this year.

Jones said the bunker had a concrete floor, an old bed, a couple of chairs and concrete pilings holding up the ceiling.

Wade’s weekend statement said the investigation began Feb. 4 of this year “following concerns regarding the sexual abuse of children in an underground bunker located in Brent.”

Two of the victims were found to be performing sex acts on each other.

When discovered, they reported that McElroy had done to them, or taught them to do, the things they were doing to each other, Jones said.

The accusations alleged the children were forced to endure vaginal intercourse, anal intercourse, and oral sex.

This is ridiculous. Alina Habba was made an interim U.S. attorney back in March. She was formally nominated a month ago. But she hasn't even received a hearing, let alone the up-or-down vote that a president's nominees deserve.

There are literally more than 260 federal positions where a Trump nominee is still waiting for a vote. That's nearly three times the 94 people who have actually been confirmed. Many had their hearings months ago, but have now been kept waiting for a final vote for no reason other than obstructionism and laziness.

This is unacceptable. We have a Republican Senate. We are only guaranteed to hold the White House for a four-year window. The MOST important role of a Republican Senate is to confirm a Republican president's nominees. Until this administration has its undersecretaries, U.S. attorneys, ambassadors, and judges, it cannot execute the many crucial agenda items it has for making America great again.

Cancel the August recess. Work weekends. Change the rules if you must. But get the nominees confirmed. Period.

The courtroom on Tuesday and an overflow room were both packed with Peters supporters, many of whom wore pins calling for her to be freed from prison.

Her attorney, Peter Ticktin, confirmed in an interview with Newsline on Monday that he has been in contact with the Department of Justice.

“I’ve basically been letting people at the DOJ understand what our situation is, or her situation is, and remember, the president of the United States basically called for her immediate release and has made it very clear that she’s a political prisoner,” Ticktin said.

Peters was convicted by a Mesa County jury, and prosecuted by the office of a Republican district attorney. There has been no credible claim that the trial was politically compromised.

==Varholak brought up the atypical nature of the habeas corpus petition= , in that it is not a petition calling for the overturn of a conviction or an unsuccessful appeal, but for Peters to be released on bail pending her appeal.

“Do you have any cases, anywhere, ever, where a court has granted habeas on an appeal bond?” Varholak said.

Peters’ attorneys did not provide the precedent of a case in which a petition under such circumstances has been granted. They acknowledged the unusual nature of the request, but argued that Peters should be released on bail due to health and safety concerns.

“If there has ever been a case where someone should be released on bail, this is the case,” Ticktin said in court. “She’s living in hell, because someone is afraid of what she might say.”

Peters had asked to attend Tuesday’s hearing remotely from prison in Pueblo, but her motion was denied on July 8. Peters’ attorneys said in the motion that she wanted to attend the hearing Tuesday because the issues being discussed “affect her liberty interests.”

Ticktin said in the interview with Newsline that Peters, who is 70 years old, has fibromyalgia.

The date of a subsequent hearing has yet to be scheduled, = but Varholak gave the state attorney general’s office and Peters’ attorneys several weeks to provide updated briefs and responses.==

contracts between 2014 and 2016, allowing unvetted, foreign, Chinese tech workers located in China to provide tech support for Pentagon cyber and Intel systems through Microsoft Government Azure.

This went straight to the top. Obama must be held accountable for giving the CCP access to the entire US federal government’s cyber systems.
