Vehicle drives into Los Angeles crowd injuring at least 28; 3 in critical condition

The vehicle hit a crowd outside a club on Santa Monica Boulevard early on Saturday morning, and it is unclear if the incident was intentional, the LAFD said. Authorities said the driver of the vehicle was shot and hospitalized after the crash.

Three people are in critical condition after a vehicle drove into a crowd on Santa Monica Boulevard in East Hollywood, Los Angeles, early Saturday morning.

Sgt. Travis Ward, Central Traffic Division Watch Commander, at the Los Angeles Police Department said the driver was shot after the collision, and had been transported to hospital and taken into surgery. For this reason, he said, LAPD was unable to determine if the driver was intoxicated.

Pictures from the scene showed a bashed up grey vehicle straddling the sidewalk with debris strewn across the floor. At least a dozen firefighters can be seen alongside a number of people sitting on the floor on blankets.

In another picture, firefighters appear to be helping to lift someone off the ground by the car.

A man who was inside the nightclub told NBC News that he heard a “loud bang,” and that a crowd of people ducked believing they’d heard gunshots.

“We look out the club, and it’s a car into the hole right there,” he said. “And then it’s crazy, because people everywhere, laying down, unconscious, people, bleeding out and stuff.”

Sgt. Ward added it was too early to say if the incident was intentional or if the driver ran off the road, adding an investigation was ongoing.

Captain Adam VanGerpen, public information officer for the Los Angeles Fire Department, told NBC News that the vehicle hit a taco cart before running into a large number of people outside a nightclub. He said LAFD was dispatched at 2 a.m. PDT.

Three people are in critical condition alongside six people in serious condition, LAFD said in a separate statement, with 19 in fair condition. It said 124 fire personnel assisted at the scene.

Sgt. Ward said there were no confirmed fatalities.

Messier 6

The sixth object in Charles Messier's famous catalog of things which are not comets, Messier 6 is a galactic or open star cluster. A gathering of 100 stars or so, all around 100 million years young, M6 lies some 1,600 light-years away toward the central Milky Way in the constellation Scorpius. Also cataloged as NGC 6405, the pretty star cluster's outline suggests its popular moniker, the Butterfly Cluster. Surrounded by diffuse reddish emission from the region's hydrogen gas the cluster's mostly hot and therefore blue stars are near the center of this colorful cosmic snapshot. But the brightest cluster member is a cool K-type giant star. Designated BM Scorpii it shines with a yellow-orange hue, seen near the end of one of the butterfly's antennae. This telescopic field of view spans nearly 2 Full Moons on the sky. That's 25 light-years at the estimated distance of Messier 6.

SpaceX added 24 new Starlink satellites to its orbital network on a Friday night (July 18) launch from California.

The company's Falcon 9 rocket lifted off at 8:52 p.m. local (11:52 p.m. EDT or 0352 GMT on July 19) from Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Space Force Base.

At about nine minutes into the flight, the booster's upper stage delivered the two dozen satellites to space.

The flight deployed the Starlink spacecraft into low Earth orbit an hour later, according to a SpaceX update posted to the X social media network.

The Falcon 9 first stage successfully completed its 14th mission by landing on "Of Course I Still Love You," an autonomous droneship stationed in the Pacific Ocean.

The launch was the was SpaceX's 88th Falcon 9 launch of 2025 and 516th completed mission.

With Friday's group (17-3), the Starlink network now includes over 7,965 active units out of the more than 9,200 satellites launched since 2019.

SpaceX's service provides broadband internet access to areas where other connectivity is not available, as well as direct-to-cell capabilities for select phones and providers.

Using the world's most advanced radio telescopes, astronomers have discovered a spinning dead star so rare, strange and unique that they have dubbed it a "cosmic unicorn."

The unique properties of this object, CHIME J1634+44, challenge our current understanding of spinning dead stars and their environments.

CHIME J1634+44, also known as ILT J163430+445010 (J1634+44), is part of a class of objects called Long Period Radio Transients (LPTs).

LPTs are a newly found and mysterious type of celestial body that emits bursts of radio waves that repeat on timescales of minutes to hours.

That's significantly longer than the emission of standard pulsars, or rapidly spinning neutron star stellar remains that sweep beams of radiation across the cosmos as they spin.

But as strange as all LPTs are, CHIME J1634+44 still stands out. Not only is it the brightest LPT ever seen, but it is also the most polarized.

Additionally, its pulses of radiation seem highly choreographed. And what really stands out about CHIME J1634+44 is the fact that it is the only LPT astronomers have ever seen whose spin is speeding up.

"You could call CHIME J1634+44 a 'unicorn' even among other LPTs.

The bursts seem to repeat either every 14 minutes or 841 seconds — but there is a distinct secondary period of 4206 seconds, or 70 minutes, which is exactly five times longer," team leader Fengqiu Adam Dong, a Jansky Fellow at the Green Bank Observatory (GBO), said in a statement.

"We think both are real, and this is likely a system with something orbiting a neutron star."

The team discovered the unusual traits of CHIME J1634+44 using ground-based instruments including the Green Bank Telescope, the Very Large Array (VLA), the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) Fast Radio Burst and Pulsar Project, the NASA-operated space-based observatory, and the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory (Swift).

The object was, in fact, simultaneously discovered by a separate team of astronomers at ASTRON, the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy, using the LOFAR (Low Frequency Array) radio telescope.

While the team led by Dong believes a stellar remnant at the heart of CHIME J1634+44 is a neutron star, the ASTRON team, captained by astronomer Sanne Bloot, refers to it as J1634+44 and think it is a white dwarf.

What both teams agree on, though, is just how strange this LPT is.

This unicorn is speeding up by feeding on a star

Both white dwarfs and neutron stars are dead stars created when stars of differing masses run out of the fuel supplies they need for nuclear fusion at their cores. Once that fuel is over, the stars can no longer support themselves against their own immense gravities.

Neutron stars are stellar remnants that form when massive stars, with masses at least eight times that of the sun, reach the end of their lives and collapse. Smaller stars closer in mass to the sun leave behind a slightly less extreme stellar remnant called a "white dwarf."

Though most of the mass of these dying massive stars is shed in supernova explosions, the cores of the stars maintain a mass between one and two times that of the sun.

This is crushed down to a width of around 12 miles (20 kilometers), creating matter so dense that if a teaspoon of neutron star "stuff" were scooped out and brought to Earth, it would weigh 10 million tons (equal to stacking 85,000 blue whales on a teaspoon).

The Southern Delta Aquariid shower is active from July 18 to Aug. 12, as Earth passes through a trail of ancient debris that is suspected to have been shed by the 4-mile-wide (6.4 km) comet 96P Machholz.

When this debris hits Earth's atmosphere, the friction created by air molecules causes the particles to ignite, creating the visible streaks we see in the sky.

The shower is at its strongest in the week surrounding its peak on July 29, at which time viewers could spot up to eight faint meteors per hour, according to NASA.

Shooting stars associated with the shower will appear to emanate from a patch of sky — known as a radiant — in the constellation Aquarius, close to the bright star Delta Aquarii, from which the annual event gets its name.

When is the best time to see the Southern Delta Aquariid meteor shower?

Stargazers will have their best chance of spotting a Southern Delta Aquariid in the early morning hours in the week surrounding July 29, according to the American Meteor Association.

Around that time, the radiant is at its highest in the southern sky and the waxing crescent moon will be hidden well below the horizon, providing a dark sky in which to hunt for the elusive shooting stars.

As its name suggests, the Southern Delta Aquariids will be most visible to stargazers situated in the Southern Hemisphere, where the radiant is higher in the post-sunset sky.

However, the shower will still be visible to those north of the equator, albeit at a lower hourly rate.

To maximize your chances of catching a Southern Delta Aquariid, first locate the bright star Delta Aquarii in the constellation Aquarius above the southern horizon (or use a stargazing app to help you find it).

Then, find a patch of sky 40 degrees away from the radiant in the direction of the local zenith, which is the point directly above your head.

Remember: the width of your outstretched fist from your thumb to the outside of your little finger accounts for around 10 degrees in the night sky.

The shooting stars seen here will have longer trails compared to those spotted closer to the radiant!

You'll have a much better chance of spotting one of the faint shooting stars if you head away from city lights and allow your eyes 30 minutes to adapt to the darkness.

After that, it's a case of lying back — ideally on a deckchair, and losing yourself in the night sky.

If you see a bright meteor streak across the sky from the north, you may well have spotted a member of the Perseid meteor shower, which has been active since mid-July.

The U.S. Space Force’s Space Training and Readiness Command (STARCOM) marked a historic milestone July 18 as Maj. Gen. James E. Smith assumed command during a change of command ceremony at Patrick Space Force Base.

“We must continue displaying the character to act decisively,” Smith said. “The courage to think boldly, and the commitment to push combat-credibility to every corner of our force, anchored by a connection to our mission and to each other.”

Smith, originally from Boise, Idaho, now takes the helm of STARCOM as its first commander to both reside at and lead the unit from Patrick SFB.

He brings a deep background in space operations and joint service, including prior assignments at NATO and the Pentagon. Most recently, he served as Vice Director for Joint Force Development, Joint Staff.

“I’m absolutely energized to begin this command and to help accelerate our course—grounded in excellence, innovation, and combat credibility,” Smith said following the ceremony.

“Let’s move forward together—always ready, always combat-credible, always above.”

The ceremony comes as a significant waypoint in the Space Force’s presence at Patrick.

Space Force Guardians assigned to STARCOM have steadily arrived at Patrick in the past months, rapidly establishing an initial capability for the command.

Full Operational Capability is targeted for 2026, with the goal of the transition being completed by the end of 2027.

“STARCOM builds and amplifies the Guardian Spirit on which our warfighting service is constructed,” said Gen. Chance Saltzman, Space Force Chief of Space Operations, who presided over the change of command ceremony.

“It’s your job to give them the building blocks of Space Force culture and infuse them with the Guardian DNA that makes them uniquely space warfighting professionals.”

As commander of STARCOM, one of three Space Force field commands, Smith leads more than 8,600 personnel charged with building the intellectual and operational foundation of the Space Force.

Its five Deltas are geographically dispersed across the U.S. and deliver doctrine development, training, testing, and education that shape Guardian readiness at every stage of their careers.

Maj. Gen. Timothy A. Sejba relinquished command to Smith after leading STARCOM since July 2023. He is slated to serve as Special Assistant to the Vice Chief of Space Operations at the Pentagon.

Smith takes the reins of STARCOM’s growth across all mission areas—from space doctrine development and Guardian training programs to major wargames, exercises and test events that advance space readiness across the joint force.

“STARCOM was created to secure our nation’s interests in, from and to space. But building a new service isn’t enough. We must also ensure that service is combat credible and fully integrated into the joint fight,” Smith said.

“That’s the heartbeat of STARCOM’s mission. We exist to forge combat-credible space forces—ready to fight and win. The joint fight hinges on our success. We cannot and will not fail.”

More Ukrainian drones target Moscow in renewed raid

Russia’s air defenses destroyed more than a dozen incoming Ukrainian drones approaching the capital overnight, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin has said. The country’s Defense Ministry reported over 150 interceptions across multiple regions.

The intercepts occurred in the Bryansk, Oryol, Kaluga, Rostov, Tula, Kursk, Smolensk, Voronezh, and Moscow regions, with at least 158 hostile targets downed since 6:15pm Friday, the ministry said at arround 7:00am Saturday.

At least 13 of those drones were intercepted en route to Moscow, according to Sobyanin. There were no reports of casualties or damage, with emergency crews responding to the crash sites, according to the official.

Ukraine has been conducting UAV raids deep into Russian territory for months, often striking residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure.

The Russian government has decried the strikes as “terrorist attacks” which deliberately target civilians.

Kiev has intensified attempted drone attacks on Moscow over the past week, according to Sobyanin, who has been reporting similar nightly raids since Wednesday.

Last month, Sobyanin told reporters that the city’s air defense system operates at the “highest level,” intercepting 99.9% of targets.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov earlier emphasized that Russia employs layered air defense systems to minimize the threat posed by drone attacks.

Russia strikes drone-manufacturing sites in Ukraine – MOD

The Russian military has carried out a series of strikes on Ukrainian defense industrial complex facilities involved in the production of drones and missile parts, the Defense Ministry in Moscow has said.

The oversight attacks involved high-precision air, land, and sea-based weaponry, as well as UAVs, the ministry said in a statement on Saturday.

“All of the intended facilities have been hit,” it read.

The ministry said in a separate statement that Russian warplanes, drones, missile forces and artillery targeted a Ukrainian military recruitment center, an airfield, and launch sites of Kiev’s UAVs.

Temporary deployment sites of the Ukrainian military were struck in more than 130 locations over the past 24 hours, it added.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported Russian strikes in Kiev, Dnepropetrovsk, Poltava, Kharkov, Nikolaev and Sumy Regions as well as in other parts of the country.

Over the past week, Kiev has intensified its drone raids targeting Russian territory, including Moscow.

The Russian authorities describe the incursions, which happen on a regular basis, as “terrorist attacks,” saying that they are deliberately aimed at civilian infrastructure and residential areas.

The Russian Defense Ministry said earlier on Saturday that some 180 Ukrainian UAVs had been shot down inside Russia between 6:00pm on Friday and 11:30am on Saturday, with more than dozen of them having been en route to Moscow.

Russia frequently conducts drone and missile strikes on Ukrainian military infrastructure, maintaining that its operations do not target civilians and accusing Kiev of placing air defense systems in densely populated areas.

Ukrainian drone pilots obliterate Russian fuel depot, frontline positions in precision strikes

Drone pilots from the 4th Border Guard Detachment of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine used FPV drones to destroy a fuel and lubricants depot, three communication antennas, a UAV launch point, and three combat positions of Russian invaders on the Southern Slobozhanshchyna front.

As reported by Ukrinform, this was announced by the Kharkiv Operational Tactical Group on Telegram, which also released a video of the strikes.

"Drone pilots of the 4th Border Guard Detachment of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, operating as part of the Ukrainian Defense Forces, continue to effectively target enemy forces on the Southern Slobozhanshchyna front.

Using FPV drones, they precisely destroyed a Russian fuel and lubricants storage site, three communication antennas, three Russian combat positions, and a launch point for enemy drones," the message states.

As previously reported by Ukrinform, aerial reconnaissance units of the 4th Border Guard Detachment of the State Border Guard Service used Baba Yaga drones to destroy 11 Russian hideouts in the Southern Slobozhanshchyna sector.

British drone fires precision missile for first time in landmark weapons test

A British-made drone has been shot down by using precision missiles for the first time, in a significant breakthrough that could support troops defend against attacks.

The Malloy Aeronautics T-150 successfully deployed laser-directed rockets against flying drones during summer testing in the Utah desert.

The Berkshire-based company, a subsidiary of BAE Systems, confirmed the trials demonstrated the quadcopter's ability to destroy both ground-based and airborne targets with precision strikes.

Initially engineered to transport cargo loads of up to 68 kilograms, the T-150 quadcopters have been retrofitted with 70mm laser-guided rockets originally created for American military use.

Each drone costs tens of thousands of pounds, while the precision munitions cost approximately £15,000 per unit.

The unmanned aircraft are already operational with the Royal Navy's carrier strike group, ferrying supplies, post and equipment between HMS Prince of Wales and its escort vessels during Indo-Pacific operations.

Anthony Gregory, of BAE Systems Air, explained the rationale behind the development. He said: "Everybody can see what's going on in the world with drone technology.

So the counter-[drone] piece is on everybody's lips, and therefore trying to do that in a sustainable and affordable way.

"At the minute, people are having to fire patriot missiles and all that kind of stuff.

Malloy and BAE started the programme to modify the T-150 to make it compatible with precision rockets in February.

A video released by the company shows the drone unloading rockets in the air, with missiles hitting a white van on the ground.

The Ministry of Defence has also joined with private companies to develop laser weapons which are capable of destroying enemy drones.

The lasers are set to be fitted on at least four Royal Navy ships from 2027.

Gregory argued the drone could be cheaper and would provide armed forces flexibility when trying to protect critical national infrastructure.

He said: "Lasers are big and complex. Per shot, they're incredibly cheap. But they are big, expensive, complex bits of kit.

Drones have been used to survey the U.S.-Mexico border for more than 20 years, but relying on unmanned aircraft to help law enforcement track migrant criminals and cartel traffickers remains a sophisticated technological operation that requires constant upgrading.

That is especially true in rural areas like Cochise County, Arizona, where drones have provided the local sheriff’s department with aerial views of 6,200 square miles of terrain that line 83 border miles for several years.

But in a rural setting that includes wide swaths of desert and 10,000-foot mountain peaks, aging aircraft with limited battery life add to the challenge of effectively manning the border.

Drones that were considered state-of-the-art just three years ago are now available in the toy department of the local Walmart, Capt. Tim Williams, who oversees the department’s Special Operations division, said.

But the Cochise County department is part of a pilot program partnered with the world’s oldest drone manufacturer.

Hybrid-style drones being developed by Canadian tech company Draganfly will offer the Arizona department with unmanned aircraft that measures 9 feet wide, can travel up to 75 mph and can help apprehend criminals.

Williams calls the upgrade a “100% force multiplier” that, once fully operational in 2026, will eliminate much of the guessing game associated with securing the border.

“Once (deputies) get better information, they’re off to do their mission and there’s not a lot of questions at that point,” Williams told NewsNation.

How drones are used along the border

Customs and Border Protection began using the MQ-9 Predator B Unmanned Aircraft System to help monitor the U.S.-Mexico border in 2005. T

he agency has used a small fleet of unmanned aircraft to monitor 6,000 miles of land border and 95,000 miles of shoreline, according to the CBP website.

More recently, CBP has used drones to provide aerial support to federal agents and officers in areas like Los Angeles, where anti-ICE protests have continued.

But for local law enforcement departments where working the border is part of daily operations, the need for better air support has gradually increased. unmanned aircraft as part of their personnel ever since.

That includes Cochise County, where Williams said that the batteries of existing drones are limited to about 30 minutes.

Because some of the criminals the department is seeking may be up to two hours away, fighting time and dying batteries have created problems.

But once the Draganfly drones are ready for use next year, the new aircraft can remain in the air for nearly seven hours, allowing more time for deputies to get to hard-to-reach areas.

“This really opens the door for possibilities of what we can do,” Williams said.

Starting with a blank slate

Draganfly CEO Cameron Chell said that despite having existing drones and impressive artificial intelligence technology in place, the aircraft his company is developing has been “future-proofed.”

Besides extended battery life, the new drones can deliver up to 100 pounds in medical supplies, water and other items.

Mossad Chief Pushes For US Assistance In Removing Gazans To Outside Countries

According to a new report by Axios, Mossad director David Barnea visited Washington this week to seek US support for Israel's efforts to persuade regional countries to accept large numbers of Palestinians which Israel plans to forcibly remove from Gaza.

Citing two sources familiar with the discussions, Axios reported that Barnea informed White House envoy Steve Witkoff that Israel has been holding talks with Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Libya about taking in Palestinian refugees. This as there's been on and off negotiations with Hamas, which haven't produced any truce settlement, and the war with Hamas has continued to spiral.

While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed that any relocation of Gaza’s population would be "voluntary," many international legal experts and war monitors argue that such a plan would amount to ethnic cleansing and should be deemed a war crime.

The sources cited in Axios said Barnea told Witkoff that the three countries showed a willingness to accept substantial numbers of Palestinians, and that he suggested the US provide incentives to encourage their cooperation.

In the case of two of the countries, Ethiopia and Libya, there are long-simmering clashes and the potential for renewed civil war present. Libya in particular is actually controlled by at least two rival governments and powerful warlords have sway over the east.

It doesn't appear that Witkoff has committed to supporting the proposal, and representatives from the three named countries have not issued public statement.

Back in February, President Trump put forward an ultra-controversial proposal to expel all two million Palestinians from Gaza, paving the way for Israel transform the strip into the "Riviera of the Middle East."

It was at that time that US officials reportedly began to pressure Prime Minister Netanyahu to identify countries willing to take in large numbers of Palestinians displaced from the Gaza Strip as a result.

All Palestinian nationals from the Gaza Strip who are not protected by the United Nations can receive refugee status in France because of "the risk of persecution by the Israeli armed forces," the nation's National Court of Asylum (CNDA) ruled on Friday.

This follows a previous ruling in September 13, 2024, that Palestinian nationals from the Strip protected by the UN could apply for refugee status in France given the fact that their protection on the spot could no longer be ensured.

Friday's decision was made under the 1951 Geneva Convention "because of the methods of warfare used by Israeli forces since the end of the ceasefire concluded on 19 January 2025 in March 2025."

It was sparked by a Gazan woman's application to CNDA for international protection alongside her son due to the fact she was not legally protected by the UNRWA the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East). Their case marks the first time in France that a resident of Gaza has been granted the status of refugee by CNDA.

The mother and son had been taken care of by the France embassy in Cairo and were able to enter France thanks to two consular passes, where they were then granted protection by the French Office for the Protection of Refugees and Stateless Persons (OFPRA) under European law "in view of the situation of indiscriminate violence of exceptional intensity resulting from the armed conflict between Hamas forces and the Israeli armed forces, in accordance with a case law of the Court of 12 February 2024."

Following this, the applicants asked CNDA to recognize them as refugees on the basis of the 1951 Geneva Convention relating to the Status of Refugees.

The Court announced that, following an examination of their application, and taking into account the current situation in the Gaza Strip following the end of the ceasefire in March 2025, the mother and son would be personally persecuted on account of their "nationality,” by the Israeli armed forces which control a substantial part of that territory.

In reaching this conclusion, CNDA relied on available public sources, in particular reports by UN bodies. It concluded that Israel's methods of warfare, "which directly and indiscriminately affect the entire civilian population of Gaza" are “sufficiently serious [to be considered] as acts of persecution.”

Grounds for granting refugee status under the Geneva Convention

The five grounds for granting refugee status under the Geneva Convention are persecution due to “membership of a group united by its cultural, ethnic or linguistic identity, its common geographical or political origins, or its relationship with the population of another State.”

Despite France not officially recognizing a Palestinian state, considering the two “stateless persons in Gaza,” it found that they possessed the characteristics of a ‘nationality” and were therefore eligible.

Thousands of Afghans have moved to the UK under a secret scheme which was set up after a British official inadvertently leaked their data, it can be revealed.

In February 2022, the personal details of nearly 19,000 people who had applied to move to the UK after the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan were leaked.

The previous government learned of the breach in August 2023 when some of the details appeared on Facebook.

But the existence of the leak and relocations were kept secret after the government obtained a super-injunction stopping it from becoming public.

Details of the major data breach, the response and the number of Afghans granted the right to live in the UK as a result only came to light on Tuesday after a High Court judge ruled, external the gagging order should be lifted.

The leak contained the names, contact details and some family information of people potentially at risk of harm from the Taliban.

Downing Street would not confirm whether the official responsible for the leak had faced disciplinary action, with a spokesman saying they would not comment on individuals.

The government also revealed on Tuesday:

The MoD believes 600 Afghan soldiers included in the leak, plus 1,800 of their family members, are still in Afghanistan

The scheme is being closed down, but relocation offers already made to those who remain in Afghanistan will be honoured

The secret scheme - officially called the Afghan Relocation Route - has cost £400m so far, and is expected to cost a further £400m to £450m

The breach was committed mistakenly by an unnamed official at the MoD

People whose details were leaked were only informed on Tuesday

Speaking in the House of Commons, Defence Secretary John Healey offered a "sincere apology" to those whose details had been included in the leak, which came to light when some appeared on Facebook.

He said it was as a result of a spreadsheet being emailed "outside of authorised government systems", which he described as a "serious departmental error" - though the Metropolitan Police decided a police investigation was not necessary.

Healey said the leak was "one of many data losses" related to the Afghanistan evacuation during that period, and contained the names of senior military officials, government officials and MPs.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch apologised on behalf of her party.

She told LBC: "Somebody made a terrible mistake and names were put out there... and we are sorry for that. That should not happen."

In a 2024 High Court judgement made public on Tuesday, Mr Justice Chamberlain said it was "quite possible" that some of those who saw parts of the leaked document in a Facebook group "were Taliban infiltrators or spoke about it to Taliban-aligned individuals".

It had earlier been feared the number of people at "risk of death or serious harm" because they appeared on the list, or because their family member did, could be as high as 100,000.

However, a review of the incident carried out on behalf of the MoD found it was "highly unlikely" an individual would have been targeted solely because of the leaked data, which "may not have spread nearly as widely as initially feared".

The MoD has declined to say how many people may have been arrested or killed as a result of the data breach.

The same review judged the secret scheme to be an "extremely significant intervention" given the "potentially limited" risk posed by the leak.

An email has been sent to those impacted by the breach, urging them to "exercise caution", and take steps like protecting their online activities and not responding to messages from unknown contacts.

Healey said those who have been relocated to the UK have already been counted in immigration figures.

'Unprecedented'

Tuesday's disclosure dates back to the August 2021 withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan, which saw the Taliban retake power and quickly surround the capital Kabul.

The leak involved the names of people who had applied for the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (Arap) scheme, which the UK government set up to rapidly process applications by people who feared reprisals from the Taliban and move them to the UK.

The evacuation - which saw 36,000 Afghans moved to the UK - has already been heavily criticised in the years since it was launched, with a 2022 inquiry by the Foreign Affairs Committee finding it was a "disaster" and a "betrayal".

When the government set up a new relocation scheme last year in response to the leak, members of the press quickly learned about the plans.

The government asked a judge to impose an injunction on the media. The court then imposed a type of order which prevented outlets from reporting any detail of the leak, or even that the injunction itself existed. Healey said he was not aware of any other similar injunctions being in place.

He told the House even he had been prevented from speaking about the breach because of the "unprecedented" injunction, after being informed while still shadow defence secretary.

Reading a summary of his judgment in court, Mr Justice Chamberlain said the gagging order had "given rise to serious free speech concerns".

He continued: "The super-injunction had the effect of completely shutting down the ordinary mechanisms of accountability which operate in a democracy.

"This led to what I describe as a 'scrutiny vacuum'."

Court documents disclosed on Tuesday revealed then-Defence Secretary Ben Wallace "personally" applied for the stringent injunction in order to give the government time to do "everything it reasonably can to help those who might have been put at further risk by the data compromise".

The injunction was extended in November 2023 on the basis the Taliban may not have been aware of the leaked data's existence.

However, Mr Justice Chamberlain decided to lift it on the ground the MoD's internal review found the Taliban "likely already possess the key information in the dataset" and confirmation of its existence was "unlikely" to "substantially" raise the risk" faced by those impacted.

Shadow defence secretary James Cartlidge, who was in government when the secret scheme was established, said "this data leak should never have happened and was an unacceptable breach of all relevant data protocols".

Erin Alcock, a lawyer for the firm Leigh Day, which has assisted hundreds of Arap applicants and family members, called the breach a "catastrophic failure".

Earlier this month, the government confirmed it had offered payouts to Afghans whose information had been compromised in a separate data breach.

His comments were made on IMO, the podcast that former First Lady Michelle Obama co-hosts with her brother, Craig Robinson.

Mr. Obama said he had a gay professor who became a role model.

Over 100 British spies and commandos exposed in data leak

The breach and the government’s response to it areprojected to cost up to £7 billion

The identities of more than 100 MI6 spies, British special forces operatives and other military personnel were compromised in a massive data breach which was subsequently covered up, multiple media organizations reported on Thursday.

The fallout from the massive British Defense Ministry Afghanistan leak was kept from public view under a court-imposed superinjunction for years. That gag order was lifted Tuesday by a High Court judge, allowing the media to report on the incident.

Days later, several news outlets revealed that UK military and intelligence personnel were among those exposed.

The names of more than 100 British officials were in the leaked data, including members of MI6 and special forces, the BBC admitted on Thursday.

The UK Defense Ministry had originally leaked a spreadsheet via a mistakenly sent email in February 2022 containing then personal details of nearly 19,000 Afghans. These individuals had worked with the British during the decades-long US-led war in Afghanistan and had applied for resettlement in the UK, fearing retaliation from the Taliban.

The data breach resurfaced the following year, when someone in Afghanistan posted part of it on Facebook and threatened to publish the rest. This prompted London to scramble to put a gag order on the matter and create a secret relocation scheme for those affected. The individuals were not informed of the leak “despite the risk to their safety,” according to the BBC.

The total costs of relocating thousands of Afghans and their families to the UK and housing them, “could be assumed to run into several billion pounds,” according to Judge Justice Chamberlain, who lifted the superinjunction. A total of 4,500 people have been moved from Afghanistan to the UK under the scheme to date, the BBC reported on Thursday.

UK Defense Secretary John Healey has issued a “sincere apology” on behalf of London to those whose information was compromised in the data breach. He said he was “unable to say for sure”whether anyone had been killed as a result of the leak, according to the BBC.
