America's top spy, the US Director of National Intelligence, is on a secret visit to Australia, the ABC has learnt.
James Robert Clapper Jr directs the US National Intelligence Program and reports directly to President Barack Obama.
So far the Federal Government is refusing to give any details of his activities and meetings while in Australia, but the United States embassy in Canberra has confirmed Mr Clapper's visit.
"As allies, the United States and Australia cooperate closely on a wide range of issues," an embassy spokeswoman told the ABC.
"It is not uncommon that senior US Government officials visit Australia and engage in high-level consultations."
Before flying to Australia Mr Clapper stopped over in New Zealand where he met with Prime Minister John Key.
"I've met General Clapper on a couple of occasions. He's obviously got great insight into intelligence and what's happening around the world," Mr Key said.
The US intelligence chief is believed to be travelling onboard a US military C-17 Globemaster.
Last week the Australian Federal Police hosted the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation James B Comey on a two-day visit to Australia.
Mr Comey also met with Attorney-General George Brandis and Justice Minister Michael Keenan.

A top lawyer for President Donald Trump’s National Security Agencypreviously worked for Senate Democrats on their discredited probe attempting to tie Trump to Russia and has a history of partisan anti-Trump activism, a Daily Wire investigation reveals.
April Falcon Doss is the current general counsel for the NSA, the powerful cyber-intelligence agency, according to the agency’s website. A longtime veteran of the agency, Doss also worked as an NSA intelligence lawyer from 2003 to April 2016. But in between those two stints, she worked on the highly-partisan congressional investigation into Russian involvement in the 2016 election.
Just months into Trump’s first term as president, she took a high-level job working for Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) on the Senate Intelligence Committee, investigating supposed Russian interference in the 2016 election. Doss was the Democrats’ Senior Counsel for the committee’s Russia investigation, which conducted hundreds of interviews in its failed attempt to find evidence of conspiracy between Trump and Russia. (The entire SSIC was filled with democrats and republicans that participated with Obama’s coup. All of them hated Trump)
The Daily Wire’s discovery of Doss’s continuing employment at the top level of the intelligence community comes as newly-revealed documents provide further evidence of unethical conduct by Democrats and the intelligence state aimed at sabotaging Trump. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard submitted a criminal referral over what she called a conspiracy of “manufactured intelligence”, and Trump has said the documents could support the prosecution of people as high up as former President Barack Obama, and his top intelligence chiefs, James Comey and James Clapper.
Doss is a transparently partisan activist who has written publicly about her opposition to Trump. She has called for Trump to be permanently banned from social mediafor staging an “insurrection,” attacked Republicans for opposing a crackdown on “disinformation,” and defended the treatment of Trump aides Carter Page and Michael Flynn at the hands of the intelligence state.
The Record reported in June 2022 that the NSA, during the Biden administration, had re-hired Doss for the top role. The intelligence agency didn’t publicly announce the hire, it reported, because it didn’t want to “stir the hornet’s nest among Capitol Hill Republicans.”That’s because in the interim, Democrats, “experts,” and intelligence officials had decried it as improper — and ultimately blocked it — when Trump had attempted to name a Republican former House intelligence committee staffer to the same role.
The Trump administration appointed Michael Ellis to the job in November 2020, but then-NSA Director Gen. Paul Nakasone placed him on administrative leave the day he saw sworn in, while an investigation into whether Ellis’s hire was appropriate ensued. The investigation ultimately found no wrongdoing, but by that time, Ellis had resigned.
The job remained without a permanent occupant until Doss — after brief stop back at the same private practice — filled it. The general counsel job is considered a “career civil service” position, so she remained in the Trump administration, even as Trump sought to prevent a repeat of his first term, which was derailed by left-wing “deep state” intelligence actors pushing a cyber-conspiracy.

It was a Great Honor to tour the Renovation (and some new Construction!) of the Federal Reserve Building with Chairman Jerome Powell, Senator Tim Scott, and others. It’s got a long way to go, would have been much better if it were never started, but it is what it is and, hopefully, it will be finished ASAP. The cost overruns are substantial but, on the positive side, our Country is doing very well and can afford just about anything — Even the cost of this building! I’ll be watching and, hopefully, adding some expertise. As everyone knows, I renovated the Old Post Office on Pennsylvania Avenue, and it was a roaring SUCCESS. The total Construction cost was a small fraction of the Fed Building’s cost, and it is many times the size. With all of that being said, let’s just get it finished and, even more importantly, LOWER INTEREST RATES!

The divergent treatment of two people with similar backgrounds echoed those concerns. In Ellis’s case, Trump’s own NSA brass tried to stop a Republican from being hired in a Republican administration, and he was driven out by the early months of the Biden administration. In Doss’s case, Biden’s NSA approved the hiring of a Democrat, and worked to hide it. Thus far, she’s been retained in the second Trump administration.
Doss— who “earned her J.D. degree from the University of California at Berkeley, and received an M.F.A. degree from Goucher College,” according to the NSA website — also taught at Georgetown University. In that role, she published essays ==reflecting a personal opposition to Trump.
Writing for Just Security in May 2021, Doss celebrated that “at long last,” President Trump had been banned from all major social media platforms. In the essay, she blamed Trump for “deaths at the Capitol and a serious attempt to prevent certification of the election, plus the ongoing ‘Big Lie’ – the sustained set of evidence-free claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen.” (The idea that right-wing rioters killed police on January 6 turned out to be, itself, misinformation.)
Doss also slams Republican efforts to prevent censorship, and said Republican conspiracy theories like “the rapid spread of anti-vaccination propaganda” necessitated a wide-ranging crackdown on “disinformation.”
In November 2020, she wrote an op-ed advising the “Biden-Harris Administration” onracial equity, and how to crack down on“disinformation” like Qanonand “extremism” like the right-wing plot to kidnap the governor of Michigan. (Many of the defendants in that alleged plot were later acquitted after their attorneys presented evidence that government assets had lured and encouraged them).
In a July 2021 article called “The Tucker Carlson Disinformation Show,” she attacked Carlson for calling Nakasone, the NSA director in the first Trump administration, a “far-left partisan.” Nakasone was the one who drove out the Republican general counsel, ultimately opening the slot for Doss.
“Carlson’s repeated assertion that it’s ‘illegal’ for the NSA to spy on Americans is untrue,” Doss wrote. She dismissed Republicans’ objections to the targeting of Trump officials, mockingly imagining conservatives saying “but Carter Page…” and “But Michael Flynn….”
In response to The Daily Wire’s inquiry, a spokesman for the Department of Defense, which oversees the NSA, said it was looking into the matter.
In April, President Trump fired Gen. Timothy Haugh, who led the NSA since 2023, after a meeting with Laura Loomer. Last month, the White House vetoed the Pentagon’s nomination for his replacement, Lt. Gen. Richard Angle, Politico reported.
Senator Warner, Doss’ former boss, has been railing at Gabbardfor releasing documents about the five-alarm effort by the intelligence community to tie Trump to Russia during his first term, with Warner asking: “What was Tulsi Gabbard trying to distract from with her insulting lies about the Russia investigation?”

House Republicans are launching their own select subcommittee around the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6, part of the broader effort among the GOP to rewrite what happened when rioters stormed the building that day in 2021.
The effort, which will be led by Rep. Barry Loudermilk, has been stalled for months over disagreement around its jurisdiction.But after the White House intervened, Loudermilk was granted power as its chair to issue subpoenas to compel testimony or information, he said.
Although the focus of the probe was not immediately clear, the Georgia Republican told reporters Wednesday that the panel would review security and intelligence failures and request materials that weren’t disclosed by the Democratic-led Jan. 6 committee from the 117th Congress. Judiciary Committee staff already started some of the work, he added.
Loudermilk introduced the resolution establishing the committee Wednesday, just as lawmakers were leaving for their August recess. The House will vote on it when they return to Washington.
“House Republicans are proud of our work so far in exposing the false narratives peddled by the politically motivated January 6 Select Committee during the 117th Congress, but there is clearly more work to be done,”said House Speaker Mike Johnson in a statement. “The resolution introduced today will establish this Select Subcommittee so we can continue our efforts to uncover the full truth that is owed to the American people. (Loudermilk should tell Johnson to release 100% of the videos of the original Jan. 6th, he promised it but never released it.)
Republicans have long argued that Democratic-led efforts to investigate the failures around Jan. 6 and the GOP campaign to subvert the results of the 2020 election were an unfair attack on Donald Trump. In anticipation of potential retaliation from Trump or his allies, President Joe Biden issued pardons in the final hours of his presidency for lawmakers on the House panel that led the probe.
Earlier this year, the Trump administration launched broad efforts to undo work by the Biden administration in the wake of the Capitol attack. Trump quickly issued broad pardons for those involved, and his Justice Department dismissed prosecutors involved in the investigations.
Loudermilk emphasized that the investigative panel has been a priority for
Trump, and the two began speaking about it before he was inaugurated in his second term. Although negotiations with GOP leadership have been in the works since last October, talks around the panel picked up again in earnest last month, Loudermilk said. He told reporters that at a meeting with Trump in June, the president pressed Loudermilk about the reason for the delay and said he had expected the panel to be established earlier this year.
Loudermilk said he expected the breakdown of the panel to be 5 Republicans and 3 Democrats. House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and ranking member Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) will be ex officio members, and although assignments have not been finalized, Loudermilk said Rep. Morgan Griffith (R-Va.) would serve on the subcommittee.
Raskin also sat on the previous Jan. 6 committee panel.

ABINGDON, Va. – The former Vice Chairman of the Smyth County School Board was sentenced today to 30 years in prison for using at least six minor, male victims to produce child pornography.
Todd Stewart Williams, 54, of Chilhowie, Virginia, pled guilty in April 2025 to four counts of persuading, inducing, enticing, and coercing and attempting to persuade, induce, entice, and coerce one or more minors to engage in any sexually explicit conduct for the purpose of producing any visual depiction of such conduct, in interstate commerce. In addition to his prison term, the Court sentenced Williams to10 years of supervised release and ordered him to pay more than $20,000 in assessments.
“Children are spending more time online than ever before, which makes them susceptible to individuals looking to do them harm,” United States Attorney C. Todd Gilbert said today. “It is our job in the law enforcement community to protect our kids and prosecute those who prey upon the innocent. Today’s sentence sends a clear message to anyone who exploits a child: you will be fully held accountable.”
