House Appropriators Offer Air, Space Forces $261 Billion in 2026

Absent a full defense budget request from the White House nearly six months into President Donald Trump’s tenure, lawmakers are taking matters into their own hands.

House appropriators on June 9 took the unusual step of unveiling an $831.5 billion defense funding measure, even before the Trump administration has said how it intends to spend the money.

The legislation includes $228 billion for the Air Force and $29 billion for the Space Force. Last week, another House appropriations subcommittee also approved nearly $4 billion for military construction across the two services.

If passed into law, the Department of the Air Force would receive $261 billion from the House—a slight uptick from the $257.1 billion Congress provided the Department of the Air Force in 2025.

It is also roughly equal to the topline amount the Trump administration had indicated it would seek for 2026.

Not all the funds earmarked for the Department actually end up supporting Airmen and Guardians.

About 20 percent of the Department of the Air Force Budget each year passes directly to other federal agencies, largely the National Reconnaissance Office, a defense intelligence agency whose missions are tightly linked to the Space Force.

It is not yet clear how much of this “pass-through funding” is included in the draft legislation.

Rep. Ken Calvert (R-Calif.), the defense appropriations subcommittee chairman, said in a release that the proposal is part of a “historic commitment to strengthening and modernizing America’s national defense,” combined with another reconciliation bill to deliver $1 trillion for defense in 2026 for the first time ever.

Lawmakers aim to send both the core defense spending bill and its military construction companion on to the full House by the end of the week.

Capitol Hill normally takes its cues from the executive branch.

So while Washington has grown used to unorthodox budgeting, with Congress typically failing to pass funding legislation until well after a fiscal year starts, appropriating funds before a budget is submitted is an entirely new twist.

“Unprecedented,” wrote Byron Callan, a long-time defense analyst with Capital Alpha Partners, wrote in his June 9 newsletter. “DoD has not sent Congress a complete FY26 budget request, only an appendix to the ‘skinny budget.’”

The appendix, released by the White House’s Office of Management and Budget May 30, outlined $261 billion in funding for the Air Force and Space Force as well. But it stopped short of including line-by-line details of how those billions would be spent, for instance, on weapons buys or bonus pay.

OMB has promised to publish those specifics later this month.

“I know the process to this point has been a little non-traditional, but it is important that we do our jobs as appropriators and get moving on this critical legislation,” Rep. John Carter (R-Texas), who chairs the military construction subcommittee, said in a June 5 news release.

“As this process unfolds and we receive further budget documentation, we will take it under consideration including those proposals aimed at improving efficiencies.”

Nato jets scrambled over Poland in response to Russia drone barrage

Nato fighter jets were scrambled to protect Polish airspace as Russia launched a barrage of drones and missiles at neighbouring Ukraine, including in its less bombarded western region.

“Due to the intensive air attack by the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine, Polish and [Nato] allied aircraft began to operate in Polish airspace in the morning,” the Polish armed forces said.

Poland, a Nato member since 1999, did not provide details about what other allied states were involved in the operation. Russian missiles have briefly breached Polish airspace on at least two occasions since the start of the war.

The incident came as Russia and Ukraine traded strikes on military airfields amid fading hopes of a peace deal after President Trump suggested Washington was prepared to let the two countries “fight for a while”.

Ukraine said Russia had launched a record 479 drones at its town and cities overnight.

The attack was the biggest on western Ukraine since the start of Russia’s invasion, according to Oleksandr Tretyak, the mayor of Rivne, a city about 90 miles from Poland. Explosions were also heard in Lviv, the region’s biggest city.

There were no immediate reports of deaths or significant damage to civilian infrastructure. However, Ukraine said that Russia had carried out a “massive” drone and missile strike on one of its operational airfields.

“[This was] one of the largest that Russia has inflicted on our state recently,” said Yuriy Ignat, the Ukrainian air forces spokesman. He did not identify the airfield in question or give details about casualties or damage.

On Monday night all four major airports in Moscow had temporarily halted flights, the local civil aviation authority said, while Russian drones bombarded the Ukrainian capital Kyiv.

Earlier in the day, Ukraine said it had struck Russian warplanes at an airfield about 200 miles from Moscow that is regularly used for bombing raids.

Ukraine’s general staff said it had hit a MiG-31 and either a Su-30 or Su-34 fighter jet on the attack on the Savasleyka airfield in the Nizhny Novgorod region. It said it was still clarifying the extent of the damage.

Last week an audacious Ukrainian drone attack on warplanes at airfields deep inside Russia caused significant damage to the Kremlin’s fleet of strategic bombers.

A western diplomat told Reuters that President Putin was planning a “huge, vicious and unrelenting” response to the Spiderweb operation.

Russia will soon be capable of launching more than 500 long-range drones a night at Ukraine as it ramps up production and constructs new launch sites, a source in Ukrainian military intelligence told the Kyiv Independent website last week.

There is currently a federal investigation into the Biden autopen scandal.

DOJ official Ed Martin last month revealed the three ‘gatekeepers’ who were allegedly selling access to the autopen were Biden’s Chief of Staff Ron Klain, Mao lover and senior White House Advisor Anita Dunn and Biden attorney Bob Bauer.

Last Wednesday President Trump directed his White House Counsel, David Warrington, in consultation with Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate “whether certain individuals conspired to deceive the public about Biden’s mental state and unconstitutionally exercise the authorities and responsibilities of the President.”

Rep. Mark Green Retires from the U.S. House of Representatives

WASHINGTON—Today, Rep. Mark Green (TN-07), Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement:

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce my retirement from Congress.Recently, I was offered an opportunity in the private sector that was too exciting to pass up. As a result, today I notified the Speaker and the House of Representatives that I will resign from Congress as soon as the House votes once again on the reconciliation package.

It was the honor of a lifetime to represent the people of Tennessee in Congress. They asked me to deliver on the conservative values and principles we all hold dear, and I did my level best to do so. Along the way, we passed historic tax cuts, worked with President Trump to secure the border, and defended innocent life. I am extremely proud of my work as Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, and want to thank my staff, both in my seventh district office, as well as the professional staff on that committee.

I have now served the public for nearly four decades. The Army took me to Iraq and Afghanistan. The people sent me to the Tennessee legislature and the halls of Congress. Along the way, I have often remarked on the strength of the men and women I have served with. I know that the integrity, decency, and faith of the American people are what powered us for the first 250 years, and will power us for another 250 and beyond.

I can proudly look back at my time in Congress and the success that we have accomplished on behalf of Tennesseans and the American people. I am grateful to Speaker Johnson and House Leadership for placing their trust in me to chair the Committee on Homeland Security, lead the effort to impeach former Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and to pass H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act, the strongest border security legislation in history to ever pass the House. However, my time in Congress has come to an end.

Though I planned to retire at the end of the previous Congress, I stayed to ensure that President Trump’s border security measures and priorities make it through Congress. By overseeing the border security portion of the reconciliation package, I have done that. After that, I will retire, and there will be a special election to replace me.

I have no doubt that my colleagues in this Congress will continue to strengthen the cause of freedom. May God bless them, and the United States of America.”

Rep. Green served as the Freshman Class President in the 116th Congress following his election in 2018. At the beginning of the 118th Congress, Rep. Green was selected as Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, becoming the only member of Congress to be selected at the start of their third term to chair a major legislative committee in the 21st century. In 2024, Rep. Green led the effort to impeach former Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Alejandro Nicolas Mayorkas for high crimes and misdemeanors. On February 13, 2024, the House of Representatives successfully impeached Secretary Mayorkas.

Highlights from Rep. Green’s service in the 116th Congress:

• Rep. Green introduces his first bill to Congress, the Protecting Gold Star Spouses Act, alongside former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard to allow Coast Guard Gold Star Spouses to continue receiving stipends via the Survivor Benefits Plan (SBP) from the federal government during a lapse in appropriations for the Department of Homeland Security.

• Rep. Green’s legislation directing the Secretary of Defense to conduct a study on the toxic exposure of American veterans who served at K2 Air Base in Uzbekistan passed in the FY2021 NDAA.

• Rep. Green’s Spiritual Readiness Amendment to the FY2020 NDAA, which directed the Department of Defense to assess the availability and usage of the assistance of chaplains, houses of worship, and other spiritual resources for members of the Armed Forces of all self-identified religious affiliations in order to help counter the tragic rate of military suicides, was signed into law.

• Rep. Green’s Unifying DHS Intelligence Enterprise Act was passed by the House of Representatives.

Judge denies California's request for immediate restraining order but sets arguments for Thursday

A federal judge in San Francisco declined on Tuesday California’s request to immediately block the Trump administration from using Marines and members of the state’s National Guard to enforce laws in the state, including by assisting federal officials with immigration enforcement.

Senior US District Judge Charles R. Breyer instead scheduled a hearing for 1:30 p.m. Thursday over a request from the state for a temporary restraining order that would bar officials from directing the service members to assist with certain law enforcement activities.

Attorneys for the state had asked the judge earlier Tuesday to swiftly issue the order without receiving a response from the Trump administration. But the judge has asked both sides to submit more written arguments in the case ahead of the hearing later this week.

In a brief filing to the court Tuesday afternoon, the Justice Department called the state’s request “legally meritless” and argued that if granted, it “would jeopardize the safety of Department of Homeland Security personnel and interfere with the Federal Government’s ability to carry out operations.”

(7) committing any act of treason against, or attempting by force to overthrow, or bearing arms against, the United States, violating or conspiring to violate any of the provisions of section 2383 of title 18, or willfully performing any act in violation of section 2385 of title 18, or violating section 2384 of title 18 by engaging in a conspiracy to overthrow, put down, or to destroy by force the Government of the United States, or to levy war against them, if and when he is convicted thereof by a court martial or by a court of competent jurisdiction.

(b) Whenever the loss of United States nationality is put in issue in any action or proceeding commenced on or after September 26, 1961 under, or by virtue of, the provisions of this chapter or any other Act, the burden shall be upon the person or party claiming that such loss occurred, to establish such claim by a preponderance of the evidence. Any person who commits or performs, or who has committed or performed, any act of expatriation under the provisions of this chapter or any other Act shall be presumed to have done so voluntarily, but such presumption may be rebutted upon a showing, by a preponderance of the evidence, that the act or acts committed or performed were not done voluntarily.

A network of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) with known affiliations to Marxist-aligned political ideologies initiated coordinated protest activity across Los Angeles last Friday. Almost immediately, these protests escalated into widespread unrest, including acts of vandalism, arson, and looting, consistent with patterns observed in previous color revolution-style mobilizations by the Democratic Party.

There is reason to believe that an early staging of a coordinated national mobilization effort is underway to unleash a color revolution across cities, similar to BLM-style protests that morphed into riots in 2020, spearheaded by a group identifying itself as "No Kings." This organization appears to function as a front entity for broader far-left networks, with affiliated support from established rogue leftist NGOs, including Indivisible, a Soros-funded nonprofit previously linked to a failed color revolution targeting Elon Musk's Tesla earlier this year.

Leftist news outlet Common Dreams stated that Indivisible's Leah Greenberg is one of the leading groups behind the "No Kings" movement.

This weekend's planned protest is receiving organizational backing—or, at the very least, logistical support—from nearly 200 groups, including a wide range of NGOs (get ready for the bussing of professional protesters to cities near you).

FBI Director Kash Patel has filed a lawsuit in Texas against an MSNBC columnist who falsely claimed the official spent more time in “nightclubs” than inside the Bureau’s headquarters in Washington, DC.

Patel is suing Frank Figliuzzi for “fabricating a specific lie” about him, according to court documents, namely that “reportedly (Patel has) been visible at nightclubs far more than he has been on the seventh floor of the Hoover Building.”

Defendant knew that this was a lie when he said it,” Patel’s attorneys alleged. “…Since becoming Director of the FBI, Director Patel has not spent a single minute inside of a nightclub.”

The suit also claimed “there was no basis for Defendant’s fabrication, and Defendant’s use of the weasel word, ‘reportedly,’ is itself a fabrication.”

“Defendant did not rely on reporting by any other person,” attorneys said in the filing. “Defendant made up the story out of whole cloth, and by using the word ‘reportedly,’ attempts to distance himself from what is a maliciously false and defamatory statement.”

The attorneys allege Figliuzzi’s claim constituted defamation, noting that Figliuzzi previously wrote, “Patel is one of the most ill-suited Cabinet nominees—not just now, but of all time.”

“Defendant fabricated this story to discredit Director Patel because of Defendant’s clear animus toward Director Patel,” his attorneys said.

“Defendant previously wrote, ‘Patel is one of the most ill-suited Cabinet nominees—not just now, but of all time.’ And, ‘The FBI’s motto is Fidelity, Bravery, Integrity. The record suggests that Patel doesn’t possess any of those traits.’”

“Defendant also wrote, ‘It isn’t just that Patel is wholly unqualified to lead the pre-eminent law enforcement and intelligence agency in the nation and perhaps the world … Patel’s particular problem goes far beyond competence: His record shows no devotion to the Constitution, but blind allegiance to Trump.”

The FBI director’s suit also alleged that “as a partisan commentator, (Figliuzzi) was motivated to sensationalize, and in this case, fabricate a story to self-promotingly advance his own name recognition, at the expense of Director Patel.”

Representatives for Patel declined to comment.

The lawsuit came just a month after MSNBC was forced to retract Figliuzzi’s claim on May 5.

“This was a misstatement,” MSNBC anchor Jonathan Lemire said at the time. “We have not verified that claim.”

Remittances to Mexico worth over US $63B in 2023, a new record

Remittances to Mexico hit a record high of over US $63 billion in 2023, according to data published by the Bank of Mexico on Thursday.

Mexicans living and working abroad sent $63.31 billion home last year, a 7.6% increase compared to 2022. Remittances out of Mexico increased 19.5% last year to total $1.05 billion, or just 1.7% of the incoming amount.

Most of the incoming money — 99% of which was wired electronically in transfers that averaged $393 per transaction — came from the United States, where millions of Mexicans live. Analysts attributed the record inflow last year to the strength of the United States labor market.

Incoming remittances totals have been on the rise for a decade, and the inflow is predicted to grow again this year to reach between $66 billion and $68 billion, the El Financiero newspaper reported.

Although last year’s remittances total was a record, the annual growth in their value in percentage terms was the lowest since 2015.

Data from the research arm of the bank BBVA shows that Guanajuato was the largest recipient of remittances among Mexico’s 32 federal entities, with $5.41 billion flowing into the state last year.

Ranking second to sixth were: Michoacán, $5.4 billion; Jalisco, $5.35 billion; Chiapas, $4.36 billion; México state, $4.25 billion; and Mexico City, $3.86 billion.

According to BBVA, over half of the remittances sent to Mexico come from just two states — California and Texas, both of which have large Mexican populations.

Georgia, Illinois, Colorado, Florida, Arizona, New York and North Carolina are also significant sources of remittances, BBVA said.

The importance of remittances to the Mexican economy is underscored by the fact that their value last year was well above that of both oil export revenue ($33.21 billion) and direct foreign investment inflows ($32.9 billion in the first nine months of 2023).

President López Obrador frequently describes Mexicans working abroad as “heroes” given the large sums of money they send to their families.

Some migrants increased the amount of their transfers in 2023 to offset the appreciation of the peso, which began the year at around 19.5 to the US dollar and ended at just below 17. The dollar was trading at about 17.15 pesos on Friday afternoon.

Gabriela Siller, director of economic analysis at Banco Base, said on the X social media platform that remittances sent to Mexico last year lost 10% of their purchasing power due to the appreciation of the peso and “high inflation,” even though inflation declined throughout most of 2023.

“It was the first decline [in purchasing power] since 2013 and the largest since 2010,” she wrote.

Supreme Court Will Hear Judicial Watch Case on Election Law Challenge

We’re going to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court just agreed to hear Judicial Watch’s appeal of the decision of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in a case filed on behalf of Congressman Mike Bost and two presidential electors challenging an Illinois law extending Election Day for 14 days beyond the date established by federal law (Rep. Michael J. Bost, Laura Pollastrini, and Susan Sweeney v. The Illinois State Board of Elections and Bernadette Matthews (No. 1:22-cv-02754, 23-2644, 24-568)).

The lower courts had denied that Bost had standing to challenge Illinois’ practice of counting ballots received after Election Day. (The Election Day lawsuit was initially filed on May 25, 2022.)

It is an injustice that the courts would deny a federal candidate the ability to challenge an election provision that could lead to illegal votes being cast and counted for two weeks AFTER Election Day. The Supreme Court’s decision to hear this case is a critical opportunity to uphold federal law, protect voter rights, and ensure election integrity. Illinois’ 14-day extension of Election Day thwarts federal law, violates the civil rights of voters, and invites fraud.

Federal law defines Election Day as the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of every even-numbered year. Our complaint states: “Despite Congress’ clear statement regarding a single national Election Day, Illinois has expanded Election Day by extending by 14 days the date for receipt and counting of vote-by-mail ballots.” The Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit recently ruled in another Judicial Watch lawsuit, filed on behalf of the Libertarian Party of Mississippi, that counting ballots received after Election Day is unlawful.

Illinois’ election law allows vote-by-mail ballots received up to 14 days after the polls close on Election Day to be counted as if they were cast and received on or before Election Day. The lawsuit notes that “[e]ven vote-by-mail ballots without postmarks shall be counted if received up to 14 calendar days after Election Day if the ballots are dated on or before Election Day.” A Seventh Circuit panel found that Congressman Bost had no standing to challenge the provision, despite the increased costs and injuries to his federal candidacy caused by the two-week counting of ballots arriving after Election Day.

Pakistani Tied to Plot to Kill Jews in NYC Extradited to US

A Pakistani national living in Canada who has been charged in connection with a plot to conduct an Islamic State group-inspired terrorist attack at a Jewish center in Brooklyn was extradited Tuesday to the U.S.

Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, 20, was charged in federal court in the Southern District of New York with attempting to provide material support and resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization, ISIS, and attempting to commit acts of terrorism transcending national boundaries.

He is scheduled to make an initial court appearance Wednesday, the Department of Justice said in a news release. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

“The foreign terrorist organization ISIS remains a clear and present danger to the American people, and our Jewish citizens are especially targeted by evil groups like these,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said. “The Department of Justice is proud to help secure this extradition, and we will prosecute this man to the fullest extent of the law.”

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrested Khan on Sept. 4, 2024, based on a criminal complaint filed by the FBI in the Southern District of New York. That day, the DOJ said he planned to reach the U.S. border, using three cars to travel through Canada before he was stopped by Canadian authorities near Ormstown, Quebec, approximately 12 miles from the border.
