Numerous prominent Democrats are blindly rallying to the defense of a Wisconsin judge arrested Friday by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for allegedly helping an illegal immigrant avoid arrest.

FBI personnel arrested Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Hannah Dugan of Milwaukee on Friday morning after she allegedly helped an illegal immigrant accused of violent crimes slip away from federal immigration authorities on April 18. Numerous congressional Democrats quickly put out statements rallying around Dugan on Friday, just one week after Democratic Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen and other Democrats flew to El Salvador to conduct a welfare check on the deported Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a suspected MS-13 gang member.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents showed up to Dugan’s courthouse on April 18 to apprehend Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, an illegal immigrant accused of domestic abuse who was scheduled for a hearing with the judge that day, according to the unsealed complaint. As Flores-Ruiz’s alleged victims sat in the courtroom, Dugan allegedly became visibly angry and took Flores-Ruiz into her chambers, instructing him to leave the building from a private exit after learning that ICE personnel were on the premises.

Shortly after the news of Dugan’s arrest broke, and in some cases before details of the allegations against her even became clear, elected Democrats rallied to her defense.

“In the United States, we have a system of checks and balances and separations of power for damn good reasons. The President’s administration arresting a sitting judge is a gravely serious and drastic move, and it threatens to breach those very separations of power,” Democratic Wisconsin Sen. Tammy Baldwin said in a statement. “Make no mistake, we do not have kings in this country and we are a Democracy governed by laws that everyone must abide by. By relentlessly attacking the judicial system, flouting court orders, and arresting a sitting judge, this President is putting those basic Democratic values that Wisconsinites hold dear on the line. While details of this exact case remain minimal, this action fits into the deeply concerning pattern of this President’s lawless behavior and undermining courts and Congress’s checks on his power.”

Democratic Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers also released a statement, suggesting that Dugan’s arrest is an example of the Trump administration using “dangerous rhetoric to attack and attempt to undermine our judiciary at every level.”

Democratic Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar conceded that there are still details coming to light, but she nevertheless believes Dugan’s arrest to be “a grave step and undermines our system of checks and balances” and a “drastic move that threatens the rule of law.”

Van Hollen, back in the U.S. after his taxpayer-funded excursion to El Salvador, weighed in on the Dugan situation, saying that “this is what fascism looks like.”

“This Administration’s willingness to weaponize federal law enforcement is shocking and this arrest has all the hallmarks of overreach,” Democratic Wisconsin Rep. Gwen Moore said in a Friday statement. “Federal law enforcement coming into a community and arresting a judge is a serious matter and would require a high legal bar. I will be following this case closely and facts will come out, however, I am very alarmed at the increasingly lawless actions of the Trump Administration, and in particular ICE, who have been defying courts and acting with disregard for the Constitution.”

Other than Van Hollen’s visit and the allegations against Dugan, there have been multiple other alleged instances of Democrats or government officials intervening to protect illegal immigrants — including some with violent criminal records — from federal immigration enforcement. For example, a former New Mexico judge and his wife were arrested Thursday for allegedly harboring an illegal immigrant gang member in their home, while Democrats in multiple states and jurisdictions have tried to prevent local law enforcement from working with federal immigration authorities.

Alaska's Mount Spurr has experienced 66 earthquakes in the last week, signaling 'an elevated level of unrest.'

The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) issued an update Friday, saying that the 11,000-foot-tall volcano has a lower level of erupting than it reported earlier in the year, but warned the event is still possible.

In March, AVO sounded the alarm that Mount Spurr could blow in the next few weeks, but ground deformation has slowed over the last month, and the shoreline along the crater has not lost ice as it would if magma were rising to the surface.

'The likelihood of an eruption has decreased from March, but the volcano remains at an elevated level of unrest and an explosive eruption (or eruptions) like those that occurred in 1953 and 1992 is still possible,' the AVO shared in the update.

'We would expect to see weeks or more of more elevated unrest that would provide advance warning of an eruption.'

Mount Spurr is located about 78 miles from Anchorage, which is home to nearly 300,000 people who are preparing for the eruption.

Locals have rushed to stock up on food and protective gear in the event the volcano blows without notice.

If the eruption does happen, Mount Spurr would spew multiple plumes of ash rising as high as 50,000 feet into the air, Matt Haney, scientist-in-charge at the AVO at US Geological Survey (USGS) told DailyMail.com.

Each ash-producing explosive episode would last three to four hours, and the resulting cloud could blanket the city of Anchorage and other nearby communities in a thick layer of dust.

Virginia Giuffre, who accused Prince Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein of sexual abuse, has died by suicide.

“It is with utterly broken hearts that we announce that Virginia passed away last night at her farm in Western Australia,” her family said in a statement provided to The Australian.

“She lost her life to suicide, after being a lifelong victim of sexual abuse and sex trafficking.

Virginia was a fierce warrior in the fight against sexual abuse and sex trafficking. She was the light that lifted so many survivors. Despite all the adversity she faced in her life, she shone so bright. She will be missed beyond measure.

“The light of her life were her children Christian, Noah, and Emily. It was when she held her newborn daughter in her arms that Virginia realized she had to fight back against those who had abused her and so many others.

“There are no words that can express the grave loss we feel today with the passing of our sweet Virginia. She was heroic and will always be remembered for her incredible courage and loving spirit.

“In the end, the toll of abuse is so heavy that it became unbearable for Virginia to handle its weight. We know that she is with the angels.

MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. — A Treasure Coast judge is facing charges after he was arrested Wednesday night in Martin County.

The Martin County Sheriff's Office said that 19th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida Judge Brett Waronicki was one of the three people arrested in a traffic stop in Jensen Beach.

Waronicki, 46, faces charges of possession of paraphernalia and DUI refusal, the sheriff's office said.

The county's public information officer said Waronicki was the driver of the vehicle when it was pulled over at 10:41 p.m. at Northwest Jensen Beach Boulevard and Northwest Royal Oak Drive.

A probable cause affidavit said law enforcement pulled over Waronicki after the Ford F-150 he was driving failed "to maintain a single lane and was striking the fog line multiple times."

The arrest report also said the pickup was spotted going through the roundabout with no lights on, and also striking the bike lane.

"When speaking with Waronicki, (a detective) observed him to have bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech, and the odor of an unknown alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath," according to the affidavit.

The judge told law enforcement that he had two Vodka drinks but had not had a drink since 6:30 p.m.

The report said Waronicki refused both a field sobriety test and a breathalyzer, claiming he "did nothing wrong."

In 2022, a Cleveland Clinic study found that the risk of covid infection increased with the number of covid vaccine doses received, a phenomenon known as negative efficacy.

Three months after President Donald Trump signed an executive order withdrawing the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO) - they're now suffering from a 'large salary gap' and have 'no choice but to reduce the scale of our work and workforce' with 'significant' layoffs, according to AFP, citing director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Iran says 4 people have been killed in massive port explosion

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — A massive explosion and fire at a port in southern Iran has killed four people, authorities said Saturday.

Babak Mahmoudi, the head of the country’s rescue organization, made the announcement on state television.

At least 516 others have been injured in the blast at the Shahid Rajaei port just outside of Bandar Abbas, a major facility for container shipments for the Islamic Republic that handles some 80 million tons (72.5 million metric tons) of goods a year.

Social media videos showed black billowing smoke after the blast. Others showed glass blown out of buildings kilometers (miles) away from the epicenter of the explosion. State media footage showed the injured crowding into at least one hospital, with ambulances arriving as medics rushed one person by on a stretcher.

Authorities offered no cause for the explosion hours later, though videos suggested whatever ignited at the port was highly combustible.

Industrial accidents happen in Iran, particularly at its aging oil facilities that struggle for access to parts under international sanctions. But Iranian state TV specifically ruled out any energy infrastructure as causing or being damaged in the blast.

Mehrdad Hasanzadeh, a provincial disaster management official, told Iranian state TV that first responders were trying to reach the area while others were attempting to evacuate the site.

Hasanzadeh said the blast came from containers at Shahid Rajaei port in the city, without elaborating. State TV also reported there had been a building collapse caused by the explosion, though there were no immediate other details offered.

The Interior Ministry also said it launched an investigation into the incident.

Shahid Rajaei port in Hormozgan province is some 1,050 kilometers (650 miles) southeast of Iran's capital, Tehran, on the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf through which 20% of all oil traded passes. In 2020, a suspected Israeli cyberattack targeted the port. It came after Israel said it thwarted a cyberattack targeting its water infrastructure, which it attributed to Iran.

The blast happened as Iran and the United States met Saturday in Oman for the third round of negotiations over Tehran's rapidly advancing nuclear program.

The Vatican overturned protocol to ensure that Volodymyr Zelensky was given a front-row seat at the funeral of Pope Francis, along with Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron.

Mr Zelenksy arrived in Rome with his wife, Olena Zelenska, amid expectations of a breakthrough in peace talks in Ukraine.

The leader of the war-torn country was given a spontaneous round of applause as he took his seat in St Peter’s Square after briefly meeting Mr Trump for their first talks since their Oval Office bust-up.

It seems that the Vatican made special arrangements to ensure Mr Zelensky was given a prominent spot in the limelight at a ceremony where most leaders were seated according to their country’s name and whether they were heads of state or government.

Arcane rules dictated that world leaders be seated in alphabetical order according to the name of their country in French – the traditional language of diplomacy when the protocols were made.

As president of Ukraine, Mr Zelensky could have expected to be in the third row or even farther back. Instead, he was seated in the front row, 11 seats away from Mr Trump, who was on his right.

The Vatican did not deny that protocol rules had been bent. “I believe they filled a vacant place,” Matteo Bruni, the Vatican spokesman, told The Telegraph.

Between Mr Zelensky and Mr Trump were, among others, the presidents of India, Hungary, Gabon, Mr Macron and his wife, Brigitte, and Alexander Stubb, Finland’s president.

In French, the United States begins with an E – États-Unis.

To the right of Mr Trump and his wife, Melania, was Alar Karis, the president of Estonia, and the King Felipe of Spain (Espagne in French).

To Mr Zelensky’s right was Michael D Higgins, Ireland’s president, which appears to show that protocol rules were bent to ensure the Ukrainian leader was given a prominent spot.

Elsewhere, the rules were strictly observed, with Javier Milei, Argentina’s president, seated next to a standing Swiss guard on the far right of the front row.

The Prince of Wales, who was representing the King, was seated in the third row, next to Olaf Scholz, the outgoing German chancellor, who is a head of government rather than head of state.

Sir Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister, and his wife, Lady Starmer, were also in attendance, as was Joe Biden, the former US president, who was seated in the fifth row.

Sergio Mattarella, Italy’s president, was in the front row, while Giorgia Meloni, the country’s prime minister, was seated farther back in observance of the protocol regarding heads of government and heads of state such as presidents and royals.

Russia’s top diplomat says his French colleagues “occasionally” express desire to resolve strained relations

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said that manyFrench officials silently agree with millions of their citizens who have no desire to “sacrifice friendship” with Moscowfor thedubious benefits of supporting the “Nazi regime”in Kiev.

Lavrov said on Friday that Moscow has been receiving signals, conveyed through informal channels, communicating Paris’s desire to repair relations between the two countries.

“Our French colleagues send us occasional signals that they really want to deal with the issues at hand, but they do this in a whisper,”Lavrov stated during a ceremony in Moscow, where he awarded the Order of Friendship to French-Russian businessman Emmanuel Quidet.

While relations between Russia and France have deteriorated over the Ukraine conflict, the “strength of the bond between us isevidenced by the fact that a number of French companies continued to operate in Russiadespite threats and difficulties,” Lavrov said, praising Quidet for his work.

“We are deeply convinced that millions of people in France fully realize what is happening, and they have no desire to sacrifice friendship with Russia for the dubious benefits of supporting the Nazi regime,” the top diplomat added.

Lavrov criticized what he described as the “false, crude, and primitive interpretations” of the Ukraine conflict being planted in French public opinion,and accused Paris of playing a leading role in directing Ukraine toward confrontation with Russia.

Despite the political strains, Lavrov emphasized that a number of French companies have continued operating in Russia. “I am confident that they made the right choice,” he said, thanking Quidet – who holds an honorary presidency over a non-profit association of some 400 international companies – for his contribution to strengthening Franco-Russian relations.

France has become one of Kiev’s key backers during the conflict, as well as one of the primary proponents of theidea to deploy a military force into Ukraine, repeatedly floated by French President Emmanuel Macron.

France and the UK have actively promoted the idea within the so-called “coalition of the willing,”a group of around 30 of Kiev’s supporters. In recent days, however, the key advocates of a potential deployment have reportedly shown a weakening desire to send troops,as the group has failed to agree on an actual plan for deployment or the scope of the mission. Moscow has repeatedly warned strongly against the deployment of any NATO troops into Ukraine under any pretext.

No matter what deal I make with respect to Russia/Ukraine, no matter how good it is, even if it’s the greatest deal ever made, The Failing New York Times will speak BADLY of it. Lavrov criticizes Zelensky for leaking confidential talks

“Serious” matters are never discussed in public before negotiations are finalized, the Russian foreign minister says

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has criticized Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky for disclosing information that he believes should remain confidential until negotiations are finalized. Lavrov emphasized that Russia does not intend to publicly reveal the progress of talks with the US on a Ukraine settlement until the process is completed.

Lavrov made the remarks in an interview with CBS News on Thursday, responding to a request for details about Washington’s proposal to end the conflict.

“We are really polite people. And unlike some others, we never discuss in public what is being discussed in negotiations. Otherwise, negotiations are not serious,” Lavrov said.

“If you want to ask for somebody’s opinion regarding the substance [of the proposed peace deal],go to Zelensky. He is happy to talk to anybody through media, even to President Trump,” he added.

Lavrov reaffirmed Moscow’s openness to an agreement but stressed that it would only consider and discuss “serious proposals,”insisting the process “is not supposed to be public.” When asked whether a deal was imminent, he said, “the negotiations continue,”andemphasized that “until the end of the negotiations, we cannot disclose what it is all about.”

“The president of the United States believes, and I think rightly so, that we are moving in the right direction,” Lavrov stated. “The statement by the president mentions a deal, and we are ready to reach a deal. But there are still some specific points, elements of this deal which need to be fine-tuned, and we are busy with this exact process.”

Later on Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US special envoy Steve Witkoff met for talks on resuming direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. Trump later declared the three-hour meeting a success, saying the two sides were “very close to a deal”despite clear differences.

The agreement proposed by Washington reportedly includes US recognition of Russian sovereignty over Crimea, a freezing of the conflict along the current front line, and unofficial acknowledgment of Moscow’s control over four former Ukrainian regions that voted to join Russia, as well as formal opposition to Kiev’s NATO bid.

However,Zelenskyon Friday reiterated that Kiev would not even discuss formally recognizing Crimea as Russian. He saidhis “vision” for a resolution includes more “sanctions, economic and diplomatic pressure”on Moscow, even though Washington’s framework reportedly calls for a phased removal of sanctions.

Trump earlier blamed Zelensky’s “inflammatory”public statements for damaging the negotiation process and warned that Kiev risks losing the entire country if it continues to stall talks with Moscow.

DEADLY CRASH Horror moment police plane nosedives into sea killing at least 5 as aircraft ‘splits in two’ after crashing into water

THIS is the horrifying moment a police plane crashed into the sea and left at least five people dead.

The aircraft was caught on camera nosediving into the water while on a test flight in Thailand before reportedly being split in two upon impact.

The propeller plane appeared to be a Viking DHC-6 Twin Otter with images showing the wreckage floating on the sea in the Hua Hin district.

The plane crashed near Hua Hin Airport just after 8am.

Officials confirmed it was just over 300ft off shore at the time of the fatal plummet.

Only one passenger is said to have survived the horror smash, according to Royal Thai Police spokesperson Archayon Kraithong.

Four died upon impact with their bodies being recovered by emergency crews as a fifth was declared dead in hospital.

The condition of the survivor is still unknown.

All of those on board were police officers, Kraithong later confirmed.

The cause of the crash is still unknown with investigations ongoing.

Archayon said officials are starting to gather evidence, including black box data to help with their inquiry.

Horrified guests at the Baby Grand Hua Hin Hotel watched on as the aircraft slammed into the Gulf of Thailand.

Onlooker Isara Supasa said: "I was shocked and ran onto the beach. There was no sign of life coming from the plane."

National Police Chief Police General Kitrat Phanphet confirmed the victim's families will be closely supported.

Just weeks earlier, three people died after a medical helicopter carrying a patient plunged into the sea in Japan.

The coast guard deployed two planes and three ships to the area as part of the rescue operation with three survivors being found.

The pilot, Hiroshi Hamada, 66, Katsuto Yoshitake, helicopter mechanic and nurse, Sakura Kunitake, 28, were all rescued by the coast guard shortly after the crash.

The trio were found in the water clinging to inflatable lifesavers before they were rushed to hospital.

ACES finds its home in orbit

The Atomic Clock Ensemble in Space (ACES), ESA’s state-of-the-art timekeeping facility, has been successfully installed on the International Space Station, marking the start of a new chapter in space-based precision science.

ACES lifted off on 21 April 2025 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, United States, as part of the 32nd SpaceX commercial resupply services mission to the International Space Station.

On 25 April, the Station’s Canadian robotic arm installed the payload on the Earth-facing side of ESA’s Columbus laboratory, where it is set to operate for 30 months.

Developed by ESA in collaboration with European industry led by Airbus, ACES carries the most accurate atomic timepieces ever launched into space: PHARAO, a caesium-based fountain clock developed by the French space agency CNES, and the Space Hydrogen Maser built by Safran Timing Technologies in Switzerland.

These clocks will work in tandem with a cutting-edge microwave and laser link system to deliver time from orbit with unprecedented precision and allow ACES to establish a “network of clocks”, comparing the most accurate clocks on Earth and in space to explore the nature of time, test general relativity and help pave the way for a redefinition of the second based on next-generation optical clocks.

With installation now complete, the next step is the first switch-on of the system, scheduled for 28 April.

This initial activation will establish communications with ground control, enabling telemetry – data transmitted from ACES to Earth – and telecommands – instructions sent from engineers on the ground to ACES – while stabilising thermal systems in preparation for clock operations.

A six-month commissioning phase will follow, during which engineers and scientists will calibrate the instruments, test time transfer links and characterise the performance of the ACES clocks.

ACES will connect with clocks at selected ground stations several times a day as it orbits Earth on the International Space Station.

When multiple clocks are in the same field of view for the Station, such as two located in Europe, ACES can achieve a precision of one part in 10-17, or about 10 quintillionths of a second, within just a few days.

This is between one and two orders of magnitude better than today's systems using navigation satellites such as GPS.

Comparisons between distant clocks across continents, never directly compared to this accuracy before, will take about a week.

By the end of commissioning, the best operating parameters for PHARAO will be defined. ACES will then begin its two-year science phase, with ten planned sessions of 25 days of data-taking.

After validation by the ACES science team, results will be shared with the global scientific community, opening new frontiers in fundamental physics and the science of time.

The orthodox complex in Russia’s Belgorod Region was “deliberately” targeted by drones, according to the governor and local metropolitan bishop

The iconic New Jerusalem orthodox temple has burned down as a result of a Ukrainian drone attack, Belgorod Region Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov and the local metropolitan bishop have said.

Since the escalation of the conflict between Moscow and Kiev in February 2022,the Russian region bordering Ukraine has repeatedly been targeted by artillery and mortar fire, as well as explosives-laden UAVs from across the border.

In a post on Telegram late Thursday, Gladkov wrote that the “Ukrainian Armed Forces have barbarously attacked our universally beloved New Jerusalem temple compound.”

“During the holy Easter week, one of [the region’s] holiest places was deliberately struck,”he said, adding that Ukrainian UAVs subsequently targeted the firefighters who were trying to contain the fire.

In a separate post, Gladkov suggested that the incident proves “nothing is sacred” for the Ukrainian forces.

The metropolitan bishop of Belgorod Region, Ioann, confirmed the destruction of the New Jerusalem Temple complex in a statement on Telegram Friday morning.

”For several hours, a group of drones was intentionally destroying the wooden buildings of the compound,”he said, claiming that the Ukrainian military used incendiary bombs, and the UAVs were controlled via satellite, making them difficult to jam. The bishop also accused Kiev of targeting the first responders at the scene.

In an article on Thursday, RIA Novosti quoted another representative of the Belgorod Region diocese as saying at least two large drones took part in the attack, with one apparently acting as a radio retransmitter, amplifying the signal for the other UAV.

The orthodox compound, a wooden reproduction of biblical Jerusalem, was built in the early 2000s.

According to Gladkov, over the past 24 hours, theUkrainian military attacked a total of ten locationsin Belgorod Region with artillery shelling and nearly 100 drones.

In late February, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, “it’s clear that the Kiev regime doesn’t shy away from anything… There’s nothing sacred [for them].”

He made the remarks after Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) reported that it detained two suspects who had allegedly planned to assassinate Metropolitan Tikhon, the head of the Simferopol and Crimean diocese, with a bomb, presumably at the behest of the Ukrainian intelligence services.

Metropolitan Tikhon has been described as a close spiritual adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin, though they have never confirmed this.

Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated Moscow’s readiness for unconditional talks with Ukraine during a recent meeting with US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has revealed.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Peskov confirmed that the topic was brought up during the meeting between the Russian president and the US special envoy at the Kremlin on Friday.

“During yesterday’s conversation with Trump’s envoy Witkoff,Vladimir Putin reiterated that the Russian side is ready to resume the negotiation process with Ukraine without any preconditions,”Peskov stated.

The spokesperson stressed that the Russian president has repeatedly spoken about Moscow’s readiness for talks.

The Putin-Witkoff meeting on Friday was the latest in a series of contacts between Moscow and Washington in recent months. The US special envoy, seen as a key figure behind kickstarting negotiations on the Ukraine conflict, has held multiple rounds of talks with senior Russian officials, including at least three meetings with the Russian president.

‘Fantastic tales about space travel technology’ from fake Bay Area company were ‘science fiction’

Ramesh Nathan told investors his Bay Area spacecraft company had seven offices around the world, employed more than 15,000 people, and generated $30 billion in profit in a single quarter.

But, according to the indictment that just led to his fraud conviction, the company had no offices, no workers and no revenue.

A jury on Thursday found Nathan, 43, found guilty of fraud and money laundering after an eight-day trial.

In 2016 and 2017, and possibly earlier, Nathan took about $50,000 from six investors, including U.S. military veterans, his indictment said.

He reeled them in with false promises that his San Francisco-based Relativity Research Fund was involved in development of interstellar space travel technology, prototype spacecraft, combustion-free propulsion systems, cutting-edge robotics, and other innovations, the indictment said.

Relativity had an office in the city’s Financial District, according to the indictment.

His statement to investors that Relativity had completed the requirements for listing on the Nasdaq stock exchange were also false, the indictment said.

So was a statement that the company would merge with another firm, according to the indictment.

“Ramesh Nathan spun fantastic tales about space travel technology and advanced robotics to entice investors into funding his company, but all he had to offer was science fiction,” federal prosecutor Patrick Robbins said after the jury’s verdict in San Francisco U.S. District Court.

“He deceived his investors, many of whom were veterans, about a nonexistent business. Then he used the ill-gotten funds to line his own pockets.”

Relativity, Robbins said, was “a nonexistent business.”

Nathan laundered investors’ funds through various bank accounts, prosecutors said.

He used the money for personal expenses including travel, and also transferred funds to an overseas bank account, his mother, and his former girlfriend, the indictment said.

Nathan was arrested in 2019 while trying to leave the U.S., according to court documents.

Convicted of six counts of fraud and two counts of money laundering, Nathan faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for each fraud charge and 10 years for the two money-laundering counts, but federal sentencing guidelines make maximum sentences rare.

He also faces forfeiture of any property gained through his crimes. He is to appear in court again June 13.

Ukraine suffered catastrophic losses in its incursion, bringing victory in the wider conflict closer, the Russian president has said

Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that Ukrainian forces have been completely driven back from the border region of Kursk, following months of fierce fighting. He made the remarks while being briefed on the frontline situation by the chief of the General Staff, Valery Gerasimov.

Kiev suffered heavy losses during the incursion,which began in August last year, undermining its defenses in other sectors of the front, Putin said.

Gerasimov confirmed that North Korean forces helped defend Russia’s Kursk Region.

Here are the key takeaways from the briefing.

Last holdout eliminated

On Saturday, Russian troops liberated the village of Gornal, which is 1km from the border,and was the last remaining Ukrainian-controlled settlement in Kursk Region, Gerasimov said.

”The defeat of the armed formations of the Ukrainian armed forces that invaded Kursk Region has been completed,” he stated. Kiev’s plans “to create a so-called strategic bridgehead and to disrupt our offensive in Donbass have failed.”

Road to victory

Early on in the incursion, Russian forces managed to halt Ukraine’s advance, and later forced it to switch to defensive operations, Gerasimov said. Subsequent flanking counterattacks isolated Kiev’s spearhead, allowing Russia to destroy the enemy forces in a piecemeal fashion as it regained ground.

The final push to liberate the region began in early March, the general stated, highlighting a daring infiltration deep into Kiev-controlled territorythrough an underground pipelinenear the town of Sudzha, which led to acomplete collapse of the Ukrainian defenses.

Ukraine’s elite units decimated

The botched incursion proved costly for Kiev, Putin said, pointing to “the huge losses... including among the most combat-ready, trained, and equipped, including by Western models of equipment.” These losses will “certainly be reflected along the entire line of combat,” he said.

The total Ukrainian lossesduring the Kursk incursionamounted to more than 76,000 servicemen killed and wounded, and the loss of more than 7,700 units of military equipment, including 412 tanks, 340 infantry fighting vehicles, and 314 armored personnel carriers, Gerasimov said.

North Korean assistance

Gerasimov confirmed that Russia’s military effort in Kursk Region was supported by North Korean troops, whose assistance was provided underthe Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnershipsigned last year.

The soldiers and officers of the Korean People’s Army have “demonstrated high professionalism, courage, and heroism in battle,” the general said.

Return to peaceful life

Russian forces are now carrying out asweeping operation to find “individual Ukrainian armed forces service members attempting to hide on Russian territory,” Gerasimov said. He added that the military is providing assistance to the local authorities to “restore peaceful life,” with demining teams deployed to the region.

Lessons learned and on-the-spot surprises from the first fully successful commercial lunar lander mission bolsters the chances of long-term robotic and human operations on the moon.

The Firefly Aerospace Blue Ghost Mission 1 safely touched down on March 2 within the targeted Mare Crisium landing zone.

Plopping down on its four landing legs, the spacecraft delivered ten science instruments and technology demonstration gear through the Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative.

Blue Ghost completed more than 14 days of surface operations during 346 hours of daylight, stretching its lifetime for a little over 5 hours into the super-chilly lunar night.

Center of gravity

On moon landing day, "I should have had a heart monitor. My heart was racing. But I had full confidence in the team," recalled Jason Kim, Firefly's Chief Executive Officer during the 40th Space Symposium held here April 7-10 by the Space Foundation at The Broadmoor.

The trek to the moon involved seven major engine burns, doing so with the company's in-house engine technology that performed with precision, Kim said. "So we're going to use that engine over and over."

A key to Blue Ghost's spot-on landing was plotting out the spacecraft's changing mass properties, to ascertain the craft's constantly changing center of gravity, said Kim. The team was smart enough to design the vehicle with four propellant tanks, side by side.

"So having that balanced design really helped land on the moon and stick that landing," Kim told the audience. "It's just what commercial companies do.

They come up with creative solutions and innovation to attack the problem." Firefly also conducted robust testing that included 500 hours of rehearsals using multiple simulations to design the system, he said.

Doubling-down on autonomy

Another checklist success was the Blue Ghost's autonomous landing.

"There were no communication outages that we had to worry about. No latencies we had to worry about or false alarms from human error.

It was just doing everything autonomously in the last hour. That's what made it successful … but also that's why it was so challenging," Kim said.

As a big believer of autonomy, Kim said the company is doubling-down on that capability. "All of our spacecraft going forward are going to have some level of autonomy," he said as "that's where the future is going."

Surprise finding

After landing, Blue Ghost immediately got to work.

Kim spotlighted two payloads, the LISTER drill to probe the moon's subsurface and the Lunar PlanetVac that successfully collected, transferred, and sorted lunar regolith from the moon using pressurized nitrogen gas.

It proved to be a low cost, low mass solution for future robotic sample collection.

LISTER was developed jointly by Texas Tech University and Honeybee Robotics, a Blue Origin company that also provided the Lunar PlanetVac.

The LISTER drill, plowing down an unprecedented three feet instead of a projected 10 feet, "did hit some really hard rock formations," related Kim, "and that's the whole discovery.

We learned so much that we didn't know."

A surprising finding from Blue Ghost was the lunar temperature.

"Nobody has ever done noon operations on the lunar surface. We found out that it's hotter than expected and modeled."

It actually starts sooner and it lasts longer, Kim said, observing that the temperature swings on the moon "were really, really crazy."

Crater-generated heat

Adding to the temperature revelation was another Blue Ghost surprise finding.

"We didn't know we were going to land next to a huge crater. The sun does hit us from one side and heats us up. But the sun reflected off one side of that crater and hit us from the back.

So we actually got hotter because of that reason," said Kim. "So there's so much new discovery that we found and we can pass that forward to other CLPS missions."

Axiom Space names new CEO

Commercial space infrastructure developer Axiom Space has named its chief revenue officer, Tejpaul Bhatia, as its new chief executive.

Axiom announced April 25 that it promoted Bhatia, who had been chief revenue officer of the company since 2021, to the CEO post.

He succeeds Kam Ghaffarian, co-founder and executive chairman of the company.

Ghaffarian, who will remain executive chairman, stepped into the CEO role last August on an interim basis when Michael Suffredini, who has been chief executive for eight years, stepped down and joined the company’s board.

Suffredini said personal reasons led him to step down as CEO. Ghaffarian cited Bhatia’s work as chief revenue officer at Axiom as a key reason to make him CEO.

Axiom noted in a statement that Bhatia secured more than $1 billion in contracts since joining Axiom, including overseeing the company’s series of private astronaut missions to the International Space Station.

“Axiom Space was founded to expand the boundaries of what’s possible in space, and Tej has been instrumental in turning that vision into a reality,” Ghaffarian said in a statement.

“His blend of entrepreneurial drive, global perspective and deep commitment to our mission will ensure Axiom Space’s leadership at the forefront of the rapidly growing commercial space market.”

Bhatia came to Axiom from Google, where he was involved in its cloud computing business. He earlier founded and led several startups and worked on ESPN’s video streaming business.

“I’ve been inspired by space exploration since childhood, and leading Axiom Space at this critical inflection point in human spaceflight is the realization of a lifelong ambition,” said Bhatia in the company statement.

Besides its series of private astronaut missions, the fourth of which is slated to launch as soon as May, the company is developing a private space station.

It also has a contract from NASA to develop spacesuits astronaut will wear on Artemis lunar missions.

Earlier this month, Axiom announced plans for fly orbital data centers on satellites being build by Kepler Communications, a step towards long-term plans for larger data centers that will leverage the company’s space station technology.

The Kremlin suspects that the assassination of Yaroslav Moskalik was orchestrated by Ukraine

US President Donald Trump has promised to look into the assassination of a senior Russian general outside Moscow on Friday, telling reporters “That’s a big one.” The incident took place as Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, arrived in Moscow for high-level talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Yaroslav Moskalik, the deputy chief of operations of Russia’s General Staff, was killed in a car bomb explosion outside his residence in Balashikha, a suburb east of Moscow.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova suggested there is “reason to believe that Ukrainian intelligence services were involved in the assassination,”noting that Moskalik was involved in talks to resolve the Ukraine crisis before the conflict escalated in 2022.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also blamed Ukraine, saying: “The Kiev regime once again shows its essence,” while accusing the country of continuing to “engage in terrorist activities”inside Russia.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday, Trump, who apparently had not known about the incident until he was asked, said, “That’s hitting close to home, right? That’s a big one.” He added: “I’ll look at it. If I hear anything, I’ll let you know.”

The assassination occurred as Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, arrived in Moscow for high-level talks with Putin. Russian presidential adviser Yury Ushakov described the three-hour meeting as “constructive and very useful in nature”, saying discussions focused on restarting direct negotiations between Moscow and Kiev which have been frozen since the spring of 2022.

Commenting on the talks, Trump said Russia and Ukraine “are very close to a deal, and the two sides should now meet, at very high levels, to ‘finish it off.’ Most of the major points are agreed to.”

The agreement proposed by Washington reportedly includes US recognition of Russian sovereignty over Crimea, as well as “freezing”the conflict along the current front lines and acknowledging Moscow’s control over large parts of the four former Ukrainian regions which voted to join Russia. The deal would also reportedly prevent Ukraine from joining NATO and initiate a phased removal of the sanctions on Russia.

Zelensky, however, has ruled out any territorial concessions to Moscow, stressing that Kiev will not even discuss recognizing Crimea as Russian territory.

The US Space Force is seeking sources to help upgrade a nuclear weapons tracking system that will involve overhauling more than 3 million lines of code to make it ready for cloud environments.

The Space Force is looking to upgrade the compute and software that handle nuclear monitoring and international nuclear weapons treaties.

The project involves replacing the Air Force Technical Applications Center (AFTAC) National Data Center with a Geophysical Signal Exploitation System (GeoSES) that can also use cloud computing, reports Military Aerospace Electronics.

The Space Force put out a sources-sought notice earlier this week on Sam.gov.

A document included in the notice states: "The US NDC software baseline dates to the 1990s.

It comprises over 3 million lines of code (logical SLOC), written in over a dozen programming languages (including: C, C++, csh, Fortran, Java, Python, Perl, Scheme, SQL).

"The current architecture, characterized by its monolithic nature and tightly coupled components, presents significant challenges to maintainability.

This legacy software, developed prior to the adoption of modern architectural and security practices, is incompatible with cloud-ready environments in its current form."

By overhauling the code and upgrading the "core capabilities" of the National Data Center, the Space Force will instead be able to use cloud computing "to further enhance scalability, reliability and cost-efficiency" where practical for its mission to "detect nuclear explosions anywhere on earth, the atmosphere, or in space."

The current National Data Center software dates from the 1990s and is incompatible with cloud environments.

Currently, the Space Force is looking to industry for information about the cost and workload required to move to the GeoSES cloud platform.

Details about hardware upgrades are limited, but the notice states that all hardware must conform to AFTAC's Enterprise Infrastructure Baseline.

It adds that "hardware, storage, and database requirements must be identified as soon as possible and presented to the AFTAC Infrastructure Strategy Council for approval.

AFTAC maintains a system of more than 3,600 sensors worldwide along with a global network of nuclear event-detection equipment.

Its central location is at the Patrick Air Force Base in Florida, and it has 11 laboratories for research and analyzing data and "actual nuclear debris."

The main lab, known as the Ciambrone Radiochemistry Lab, spans 38,000 sq ft (3,500 sqm).

Last year, the US Space Force expanded its contract with General Dynamics Information Technology (GDIT) for a cloud-based classified environment for industry collaborations.

The expansion aimed to bring in more stakeholders and open up the environment to public cloud providers.

Kiev expects Washington to provide long-term security assistance modeled on the US relationship with Israel, VladimirZelenskyhas said, after Ukraine’s European backersreportedly rejected several points of US President Donald Trump’s proposed peace plan.

Washington presented its draft deal to end the hostilities between Kiev and Moscow during talks in Paris last week. Deliberations about an Israeli model of support for Ukraine first emerged during the presidency of Joe Biden, when Western officials began to acknowledge that Kiev was unlikely to be granted NATO membership. In lieu of collective security guarantees, they sought ways to at least ensure a long-term, uninterrupted flow of Western arms.

Zelensky’s comments come amid increasing friction with Washington, as Trump pushes Kiev to accept what media outlets have described as his “final offer” to end the conflict. Reports indicate that Washington’s framework includes freezing the conflict along the current front lines and recognizing Crimea as Russian territory – a condition Zelensky has firmly rejected.

America is not prepared for drone warfare in the homeland — yet

Earlier this month, the White House announced it would consider drone strikes against Mexican drug cartels.

Although it is important to keep options open when dealing with viable threats, we must also remember that in military planning, the enemy gets a vote.

Stated plainly: We must consider how the enemy will respond to our actions.

In the case of potential drone strikes against the cartels, a predictable response would be that the cartels retaliate with their own version of drone warfare.

Cartels are already using drones daily to track the movements of American law enforcement agents at the border and to transport contraband into our country.

We also know that cartels have shown a willingness to weaponize drones and have used them to attack law enforcement, the Mexican National Guard and criminal rivals within Mexico.

Given this, it seems likely the cartels would retaliate with drone strikes of their own, which invites the question: Are we ready for such a scenario?

A similar question was recently raised in a March inter-agency letter penned by Reps. John McGuire (R-Va.) and Juan Ciscomani (R-Ariz.) to the Federal Aviation Administration, Department of Justice, Federal Communications Commission and Department of Defense.
