NASA’s EZIE Mission Captures ‘First Light’

NASA’s EZIE (Electrojet Zeeman Imaging Explorer) mission has taken its first measurements.

These “first light” observations show that EZIE is poised to reveal crucial details about Earth’s auroral electrojets — powerful electric currents that flow through our upper atmosphere where auroras glow in the sky.

This information will help us better understand Earth’s connection to space and mitigate the negative impacts of space weather on society.

With a trio of CubeSats, EZIE launched in mid-March to map the auroral electrojets up close and in detail for the first time.

These intense currents are generated in the northern and southern polar regions of our atmosphere, about 65 miles (105 kilometers) above the ground, when tremendous amounts of energy are transferred into Earth’s upper atmosphere from the solar wind.

The same process can also ignite colorful auroras (northern or southern lights) in our skies.

The EZIE spacecraft are designed to map the strength and direction of these currents by studying emission from oxygen molecules about 10 miles (16 kilometers) below the electrojets.

The oxygen molecules emit microwaves at a frequency of 118 gigahertz.

But in the presence of magnetic fields, such as those created by the electrojets, this emission line divides in a process called Zeeman splitting.

The stronger the magnetic field, the farther apart the 118 GHz line is split. The polarizations, or wave orientations, of the oxygen emission reveal the direction of the magnetic field.

On March 19, one of the three EZIE satellites successfully recorded Zeeman splitting of the 118 GHz oxygen emission line for the first time with its Microwave Electrojet Magnetogram (MEM) instrument.

The observations reveal the strength and direction of the responsible magnetic field — in this case, Earth’s own magnetic field near the magnetic equator.

“The EZIE team is very excited about these first-light results,” said Sam Yee of the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, the mission’s principal investigator.

“The observations demonstrate that both the spacecraft and the MEM instrument onboard are working as expected.”

The EZIE mission is expected to begin its formal science investigations in about a month, following final checkouts and calibrations.

The promise of cheap labor is “a drug that too many American firms got addicted to … [and] cheap labor is a problem precisely because it’s been bad for innovation,” Vice President JD Vance told his audience of investors in March:

LOS ANGELES, California — Mayor Karen Bass tried to strike an upbeat tone as she delivered the bad news Monday in her “State of the City” speech, cutting 400 civilian jobs in the L.A. Police Department next year.

The Los Angeles Times reported:

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass released a proposed budget on Monday that would eliminate a nearly $1 billion financial gapby cutting more than 2,700 city positions — about 1,650 of them through layoffs.

The $14 billion spending plan, which covers the 2025-26 fiscal year, would provide funding for scores of new hires at the fire department, three months after the Palisades fire destroyed thousands of homes and killed 12 people.

At the Los AngelesPolice Department, more than 400 workers would be targeted for layoffs, all of them civilians, according to figures prepared by city budget officials. The number of police officers would continue on its gradual downward trajectory, with new hires failing to keep pace with attrition.

Bass also claimed that the process of recovery and building after the Palisades Fire was the fastest in the history of the state:(liar)

Today, in reporting on the State of our City, I report to Los Angeles that the recovery in the Palisades is on track to be the fastest in California history. We’re not just moving fast to move fast. We know that the faster we can rebuild, the faster we can heal. We still have a long way to go, and for those who have lost a home, each and every day is a day too long. We want to be fast, we want to be safe and we want to be resilient.

We have issued permits to rebuild twice as fast as after the Camp and Woolsey fires, we restored water nearly a year and a half faster than after the Camp Fire, and we restored power in just two months. Los Angeles, I assure you, rebuilding is underway.

Many residents, frustrated by delays in debris removal, building permits, and insurance company payouts, would disagree.

Bass said the city would start using AI technology to speed up the process of approving building permits, and called on the City Council “to pass an ordinance to waive all plan check and permit fees so that Angelenos can get home.”

However, skeptical residents are running out of time. And many refuse to forget that she was out of the country when the fires broke out in January, breaking a campaign promise to refuse international travel.

ESA welcomes inauguration of the African Space Agency

The European Space Agency has joined the world space community in congratulating the African Space Agency on its official inauguration.

The African Space Agency (AfSA) is the second regional space agency after ESA and has been in development since 2015, with the African Union Commission adopting an African space policy and strategy in 2016.

The African Space Agency brings together the 55 member countries of the African Union to coordinate and implement Africa's space ambitions.

Its headquarters are in Egypt, which launched Africa's first satellite in 1998. Since then, 18 African countries have launched a further 63 satellites and many African nations have implemented their own space programmes to the benefit of their people.

AfSA has the goal of harnessing space science and technology for Africa's socio-economic development, promoting collaborative research and the peaceful exploration of outer space.

The inauguration of AfSA came just prior to the start of this week's NewSpace Africa conference, which brings together space agencies and space companies from around the world to discuss how space innovation can help empower Africa's economy.

ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher offered ESA's congratulations on the inauguration of the agency saying: “The establishment of the African Space Agency is a real milestone for the continent and signals an important advance for Africa’s space strategy.

Space has the power to spur innovation and inspiration, and I look forward to working together for the benefit of citizens on both continents.”

Speaking at the inauguration in Cairo, ESA Director of Internal Services Marco Ferrazzani said: "ESA is proud to partnering with this new regional space agency.

Collaboration with Africa dates back three decades and today ESA even runs a dedicated EOAFRICA Initiative. With AfSA, this cooperation will be brought up to the next level.”

ESA formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding with AfSA that will underpin the implementation of the EU-Africa Space Partnership Programme by the EU, which is designed to strengthen ties between Europe and Africa and encourage the use of space technologies by both public and commercial operators.

Since Africa is disproportionately affected by climate change, there is a particular goal to improve early warning systems for severe weather events or hardships related to climate.

In an additional project co-financed by the European Union, ESA already works with the African space sector on the implementation of a satellite-based augmentation system for air traffic control systems, that enhances the security of air traffic.

Furthermore, ESA is ready to collaborate on further bilateral activities with AfSA.

FCC grants AT&T, AST SpaceMobile permission to trial space broadband network

AT&T and AST SpaceMobile have been given the go-ahead from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to carry out direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity trials with emergency services later this year.

In an announcement this week, AT&T said it will work with AST SpaceMobile to begin testing direct-to-cellular satellite connectivity on public safety’s Band 14 spectrum for FirstNet, AT&T's first responder network.

FirstNet operates a network for first responders that is supported by AT&T.

The first responder network already uses satellite technology for its deployable assets, such as SatCOLTs — satellite cell on light trucks, which are vehicles equipped with mobile cell sites that connect via satellite when networks go down during natural disasters.

AT&T will test direct-to-cellular connectivity via AST's BlueBird satellites orbiting Earth. AST's BlueBird satellites launched in September.

It comes just a couple of months after AT&T carried out direct-to-device (D2D) video calls with AST SpaceMobile.

“Satellite connectivity on FirstNet is being built with public safety’s unique needs in mind,” said Matt Walsh, AVP – FirstNet and NextGen 9-1-1 Products, AT&T.

“First responders need more than the minimum, and we are excited to continue building out our comprehensive network to serve the public safety community.”

Founded in 2017, AST's first test satellite, Bluewalker 1, was launched in 2019; Bluewalker 2 was canceled. Its latest test satellite, Bluewalker 3, launched in 2022.

AST was planning a constellation of almost 170 satellites; the first 20 were originally due to enter operation by 2023, with another 90 deployed through 2024. According to more recent press releases, it seems to have revised its constellation plans down to 100.

Verizon and AT&T, along with Vodafone, are all investors in AST SpaceMobile, rivaling Elon Musk's SpaceX Starlink.

"Alongside integration efforts with partner networks, we are installing five gateways in the United States, and we are now accelerating our path to commercial activity, starting with testing service with off-the-shelf cellular handsets on AT&T and Verizon networks," said Chris Ivory, chief commercial officer of AST SpaceMobile.

During the recent direct-to-device video calls, AST received special temporary authority from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to test its satellite broadband network in the US.

The company also carried out separate calls with Verizon. To carry out the trial video calls, AST used AT&T and Verizon's 850MHz spectrum, which is compatible with standard smartphones.

Scientists left baffled after discovering lone black hole floating through space

Scientists have been left stunned after stumbling across a lone black hole drifting through space.

It's not every day astronomers come across an isolated black mass roaming the Milky Way. In fact, it's a 'one in a million' chance, despite being seven times larger than Earth's sun.

The 'Galactic bulge' is also usually completely invisible to both eye and lens, since black holes absorb any light that falls over them.

Black holes are the compact remains of exploded stars which are so dense that its gravity stops anything, even light, from escaping its singularity.

The late cosmologist Stephen Hawking had a better explanation for how black holes essentially suck the life out of anything that comes in its path, writing in his novel that they cause 'spaghettification'.

The British professor explained how anything that gets too close to a black hole is distorted into a long, thin shape as a result of its gravitational pull.

Anyway, for decades astronomers have only been able to guestimate where they are based on the way gravity stretches spacetime and bends the light from distant stars.

Yet for the first time in history, scientists believe they have spotted a black hole based on deflections of a source star, though no star orbits it.

According to the group of researchers from the American Astronomical Society who published their findings in The Astrophysical Journal, a lonely black hole was seen from a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) as early as 2011.

Over the course of a six-year period, the team monitored the segment of sky to watch stars were being abnormally moved from their positions, hinting at a hidden object causing havoc under a cloak of invisibility.

The researchers say the mysterious void is around 5,000 light years from our home planet in the constellation of Sagittarius, reports Science News, and is actually much closer to us than the other ginormous one in the Milky Way's center at around 27,000 light years away.

Kailash Sahu, an astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, said it's 'the only one so far.'

The news comes as Sahu and his colleagues discovered the looming mass coursing through the constellation in 2022 but a second team refuted the claim, saying the body could've been a neutron star.

Speaking at the time, researcher Dr Martin Dominik of the University of St Andrews, said: "Einstein did it again - black holes make themselves invisible, but they cannot hide their gravity," as per The Daily Mail.

Now, the new observations from the HST confirm that the mass is so large that is must be a black hole.

While singular black holes are probably frequent, with theoretical estimates suggesting there could be up to 100 million black holes hidden among the hundreds of billions of stars in the Milky Way, they are difficult to find.

This is largely because it's rare for them to line up with a large star, which reveals their presence.

China Space Project Investigated by Newsweek Illegal, Chile Says

Aplanned joint space observatory between China and the Latin American global astronomical hub of Chile was not permitted under Chilean law, the Chilean government has said, in comments that highlighted deepening regional geopolitical tensions over security and technology.

The project between a Chinese state astronomical institute and a private Chilean university in Chile's Atacama desert, aiming to track space objects over the southern skies, drew concerns and warnings from the U.S. that it would also be used to track satellites, thus aiding China's military space awareness in a region that the U.S. considers vital to homeland defense, as Newsweek reported last December.

Chinese astronomers involved in the project had said that the facility at Cerro Ventarrones would be civilian in nature.

Last week, the Chinese Embassy in Santiago, Chile's capital, said that it was similar to others undertaken by other countries in Chile including by the United States, and accused the U.S. of an "escalation of interference."

While Chile's Foreign Ministry stopped short of saying the Ventarrones Astronomical Park was or would be canceled, it noted that the project had not been legal since the local cooperation partner was a private institution.

"If this initiative is focused on astronomical observation, it should be noted that, according to current regulations, private entities are not permitted to enter into international agreements on this matter," Verónica Arqueros Sáez, a spokesperson for Chile's Foreign Ministry said in an email to Newsweek on Friday.

"There are two possible courses of action: one is through a state-to-state negotiation and agreement, and the other is to channel the initiative through the University of Chile, since, by law and as a public university, it is authorized to enter into such agreements," she said.

"Additionally, the project was being developed on public land, under the terms of a concession granted by the Ministry of National Assets.

Therefore, it is essential to assess whether the project meets the conditions established for granting the concession," Arqueros Sáez said.

Last month, the Chilean Foreign Ministry announced that the project was "under review," after the Newsweek investigation revealed that part of the 10-square-mile complex would be off-bounds to Chileans, and that it was not clear exactly what the Chinese side planned to do at the site, which was being built by a Chinese state-owned company that was also involved in construction projects for the Chinese military elsewhere.

The park was announced as a joint initiative between the Universidad Católica del Norte (UCN) and China's National Astronomic Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC).

China has made no secret of the link between its space interests and political and security goals, saying it will create "effective governance in space."

The Sitian Project, a Chinese state science plan seen by Newsweek, had identified the future Ventarrones Observatory as one of five overseas nodes in a global surveillance system to "fully scan" the skies of the entire Southern and Northern Hemispheres every half an hour to "meet national strategic needs."

Chile is one of the most coveted locations for space observation on Earth thanks to its clear skies, dry conditions and high altitudes.

The United States, European countries, and Japan also have facilities there. Up to 70 percent of the world's large telescopes are in Chile.

Chilean media Ex-Ante declared the project over: "The closure of the project is interpreted as a response to the signals that the United States has been sending for some time regarding China's technological advance in Latin American countries," the news site said, before suggesting that Chile needed a "national space strategy that considers both the scientific value of these facilities and their possible geopolitical and security implications."

The Universidad Católica del Norte did not immediately respond to Newsweek's written request for comment.

Europe’s mini food lab launches into space to grow steaks, potatoes from single cells

To reduce the cost of feeding astronauts in space, the European Space Agency (ESA) just launched a lab into space in a significant first step in manufacturing food in space, a new frontier.

Feeding an astronaut can cost close to 27,000 US dollars a day. To tackle that hefty price tag and explore a new venture in space, the ESA wants to put a food production plant on the International Space Station (ISS) in two years.

The project’s primary motivation is cost-driven, but the initiative could clear a fundamental roadblock that’s inhibiting humans from becoming a multi-planetary species: space food.

Researchers at the Imperial College in London and Bedford-based company Frontier Space are at the forefront of an emerging science.

Lab-grown chicken has already arrived on supermarket shelves in the US and Singapore. Proponents of growing food in a lab argue that its true value lies in its ability to provide a sustainable and eco-friendly food source.

A bioreactor can make any kind of food

Dr. Aqeel Shamsul, CEO and founder of Bedford-based Frontier Space, told the BBC that science can now produce food and drink from “pure energy.”

“It is no longer the stuff of science fiction.” Using a bioreactor at Imperial College’s Bezos Centre for Sustainable Proteins, they genetically engineer food like fermenting beer, known as “precision fermentation.”

They add a gene to yeast that produces “extra vitamins,” but they can use this method to manufacture everything in food, such as protein, fat, carbohydrates, and whole meals.

The system might work on Earth, but it’s uncertain whether it will function properly in the challenging conditions of space.

The team sent a sample of the special yeast that might be the dawn of a new agriculture in a smaller version of the bioreactor to assess how to make a dream a reality.

Can a bioreactor make a medium-rare steak in space?

Once released by the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, a small cube satellite holding a mini-lab will orbit the Earth in Europe’s first commercial returnable spacecraft, Phoenix.

Three hours later, it will fall back to Earth off the coast of Portugal. A recovery vessel will whisk the sample back to London, where food scientists will assess how to build a bioreactor that will enable them to grow food in space as early as next year.

However, the bioreactor-made products look like “brick-colored goo,” as per the BBC, so Imperial College wants to solve that problem.

Astronauts already find space food challenging on the ISS. Cooking in space involves injecting a pouch with hot water, as the food is freeze-dried or irradiated.

Imperial College’s master chef, Jakub Radzikowski, can make starches and proteins from fungi.

He told the BBC that they could “any kind of cuisine in space,” though the project awaits approval. But the possibility of producing nutrient-rich complex foods in space is quickly becoming a reality.

“The dream,” Dr. Aqeel Shamsul said, “is to have factories in orbit and on the Moon.” The BBC concludes that the bioreactor would be the first step in creating the necessary infrastructure to allow habitation in space.

When a social media message pops up offering a high-paying consulting job from an unknown recruiter, it’s easy to be intrigued.

But before you accept this too-good-to-be-true offer, think twice.

For many current and former members of the Department of the Air Force, and increasingly, across the entire U.S. government workforce, this is the first step in a recruitment scheme by foreign intelligence entities, officials warn.

“Our adversaries are exploiting personal freedoms and online platforms to target our people,” said a counterintelligence analyst assigned to the Air Force Office of Special Investigations Center.

“These aren’t random messages. They’re calculated attempts to exploit trust.”

The analyst could not be named for operational reasons. However, their concern was echoed at the highest levels of the agency.

“These aren’t just job offers, they’re intelligence operations in disguise,” said Special Agent Lee Russ, AFOSI Office of Special Projects executive director. “Our adversaries are targeting the very people who’ve kept this nation secure.”

According to an April 2025 memo from the National Counterintelligence and Security Center, hostile foreign intelligence entities have targeted U.S. government personnel by posing as consulting firms, headhunters and think tanks.

“This isn’t a new tactic, it’s just become more aggressive and more refined,” the analyst said. “Adversaries have figured out how to blend into legitimate spaces online.”

According to the NCSC release, which operates under the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, these schemes are part of a broader campaign to collect sensitive information from individuals with U.S. government backgrounds, often under the guise of employment opportunities.

“Recruiters often appear friendly and credible, offering flattery and emphasizing your government experience,” Russ said. “They may pose as representatives of legitimate, even allied-nation companies, making their approach seem trustworthy.”

These outreach efforts often begin with what appears to be a professional opportunity, like a message from a recruiter or a inquiry that aligns with the target’s background, the analyst said.

That sense of normalcy is what lowers defenses and allows the interaction to progress unnoticed.

“The sophistication is what makes it dangerous,” the analyst said. “Adversaries are using professional norms and targeting people who’ve let their guard down because the interaction seems normal.”

These increasingly advanced attempts often appear via social media, email, or job platforms, making them difficult to detect.

“Foreign actors reach out to service members privately, which means there’s no institutional oversight,” the analyst added.

“What someone does on their personal account doesn’t necessarily have the same safeguards as an official one, and adversaries are taking advantage of that.”

Over time, those conversations can shift subtly from general networking to probing questions. Then, what started as a casual dialogue quietly shifts into something more serious.

“These schemes have evolved into long-term social engineering campaigns designed to appear professional and legitimate,” Russ said.

What makes these campaigns particularly effective, officials say, is how gradually they unfold.

However, this was the same Paris meeting that preceded Secretary Rubio saying if progress was not made quickly, the USA would exit their role in negotiating a peace deal==.

President Trump and Secretary Rubio areputting pressure on Ukraine, EU, U.K as well as the CIA background playersto get to a place of earnest peace discussion, by threatening to pull back from their effort and likely allowing Russian President Putin a lot of implied latitude to increase hostile action.

The belligerent Ukraine officials (harsh Nazi tones on display) feel emboldened to keep fighting with enhanced funding and support from the EU, U.K, NATO and CIA operativesembedded with Ukraine forces. As an ancillary matter, the potential for Trump to pull back standsas a visible motive for the USA Deep State to keep attacking Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Normal diplomatic lines ofcontact between President Trump and Vladimir Putinwould be risky given the oppositional nature of the U.S. Intelligence Community. The emissary/envoy approach removes the IC influence and control agents from the issue.

On the ‘ceasefire’ table is still the subject of European countries being the peacekeepers on the demilitarized zone between Ukraine and Russian forces. France and the U.K want assurances that U.S. troops would protect the “coalition of the willing” if the EU puts peacekeeping boots on the ground in Ukraine.

The US will propose officially accepting the peninsula as part of the Russian Federation at a meeting with Kiev and its European backers on Wednesday, as part of a broader peace deal to stop the conflict, the Washington Post wrote on Tuesday citing anonymous sources.

“[Crimea] is our territory, the territory of the people of Ukraine. We have nothing to talk about on this topic – it is outside our Constitution,”Zelensky said.

The Ukrainian leader claimed that discussing the issue of sovereignty over Crimea could only lead to additional fighting.

“As soon as we start talking about Crimea, about our sovereign territories, we enter the format of prolonging the war,” he said, adding that this is “what Russia wants.”

Last week, Zelensky lashed out over the subject in a press conference, saying that US special envoy Steve Witkoff had no authority to discuss such issues with Russia.

The US proposal on Crimea was already presented to Ukraine in Paris last week, and includes eventual sanctions relief for Moscow in exchange for a peace deal, the Post reported on Tuesday, citing sources familiar with the deliberations.

Ukrainian officials interpreted the plan as Washington’s final offer before the US washes its hands of peace efforts, the newspaper wrote, citing anonymous sources.

Brigadier General Yahya Saree said in a statement on Tuesday night that the Yemeni armed forces carried out a military operation, targeting USS Harry Truman in northern Red Sea with missiles and drones.

"Yemeni armed forces also targeted the US aircraft carrier Vinson in the Arabian Sea, using 3 cruise missiles and 4 drones," he said.

Yemenis have been hitting Israeli and American targets in support of Palestinians in Gaza since the regime launched its devastating war on Gaza on October 7, 2023, and in response to the American-British aggression on their homeland.

The operations have effectively shut down the Eilat port south of the occupied territories, causing significant economic setbacks for the Israelis.

Although it has not been confirmed what specific weapon was used in this strike, the target lies within the operational range of the Palianytsia turbojet drone missile system.

Developed domestically during the Russian invasion of Ukraine and unveiled in the summer of 2024, Palianytsia is designed for precision long-range attacks on targets deep within enemy territory.

This is not the first time Ukraine has struck a facility of the GRAU using such drones.

On the night of September 17 to 18, 2024, Ukrainian forces launched a drone attack on the 107th Arsenal ammunition depot in Toropets, 500 kilometers (310 miles) from Ukrainian soil.

Bondi that illegal aliens granted voluntary departure under federal immigration law can remain in the United States past their court-ordered departure deadline—if that deadline happens to fall on a weekend or legal holiday.

Justice Neil Gorsuch authored the majority opinion, joined by Justices Roberts, Sotomayor, Kagan, and Jackson, effectively rewriting the meaning of a “60-day” voluntary departure period to accommodate the convenience of deportable individuals, not the rule of law.

At the center of the case was Hugo Monsalvo Velázquez, a Mexican national who entered the U.S. illegally nearly two decades ago and was ordered to leave within 60 days.

His departure deadline fell on a Saturday, but instead of leaving, he filed a motion to reopen his case on the following Monday.

Both the Board of Immigration Appeals and the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that he had missed his deadline. But the Supreme Court has now overruled them, injecting ambiguity into what was once a firm immigration deadline.

In a strong dissent, Justice Clarence Thomas—joined by Justices Alito, Kavanaugh, and Barrett—blasted the majority for stretching the law beyond its clear terms, arguing that ’60 days means 60 days,’ not whenever the alien gets around to it.

“The merits question in this case—whether petitioner left the United States within “60 days” after October 12, 2021— is straightforward,” Alito wrote in his opinion.

The 60th ‘day’ after October 12, 2021, was Saturday, December 11, 2021. And petitioner failed to depart the country by that Saturday. … There is no justification for [a 2-day extension],”

Saturday is a day of the week, and there is no reason why petitioner could not have left the country on or before that date. Petitioner gives us no reason to believe—and I am aware of none—that the roads to Mexico, his home country, were closed; so he could have driven or taken a bus across the border. He also could have flown to Mexico or any other country that would admit him.”

“Nevertheless, the Court holds that he was entitled to “a 2-day extension because the last day of his voluntary departure deadline happened to fall on a weekend. There is no justification for that decision,” he added.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has recommended that people go to primary sources regarding developments in the US-Russian talks on the Ukraine conflict, warning of fake news.

In an interview with RIA Novosti on Tuesday, the spokesman was asked to comment on a recent report from the Financial Times that claimed Moscow was ready to halt hostilities in the Ukraine conflict along the current front line.

“A lot of fakes are being published now, including by respected publications, so you should only listen to the primary sources,” Peskov said.

According to the FT article from Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin offered to freeze the conflict along its current front line during his meeting with US special envoy Steve Witkoff earlier this month in St. Petersburg.

Russian presidential foreign policy aide Yury Ushakov confirmed on Tuesday that Moscow is expecting another visit from Witkoff later this week.

This will be the diplomat’s fourth visit to Russia since the start of the US diplomatic push around the Ukraine conflict.

US President Donald Trump has touted a big reveal of his plan to wrap up the hostilities in Ukraine.

“I will be giving you a full detail over the next three days,” he told journalists on Monday, adding that the US has held “very good meetings on Ukraine, Russia.”

The Kremlin has noted that while work is underway, the peace process is unlikely to conclude soon.

“This topic is so complex that it probably shouldn’t be constrained by strict timeframes,” Peskov told the press on Tuesday.

Trump and his administration have signaled a growing dissatisfaction with the pace of the peace talks.

“If it is not possible to end the war in Ukraine, we need to move on,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters last Friday.

Throughout the Ukraine conflict, Moscow has consistently said it remains open to talks with Kiev.

Negotiations must be based on the realities on the ground and address the root causes of the crisis, such as Ukraine’s aspiration to join NATO.

The Kremlin has previously insisted that it will not accept a temporary halt in hostilities, saying this would just allow Ukraine’s Western backers to rearm Kiev.

Japanese firms have developed the world’s first lightning-triggering and guidance system using flying drones, according to reports translated from Japanese sources.

Developed by The Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT), these drones have successfully induced and guided lightning using electric field fluctuations. Engineers designed a lightning-resistant cage to protect the drones during strikes.

Following successful trials earlier this year, there are plans to deploy networks of these drones across cities and around critical infrastructure to help prevent lightning-related damage and improve public safety.

“In the future, this result is expected to contribute to research into the generation of lightning, which has yet to be fully understood, and to the reduction of lightning damage to cities and people,” said the firm in a statement.

Guided lightning defense

A significant natural danger, lightning is thought to cause between $702 million to $1.4 billion (¥100 and ¥200 billion) in damage in Japan each year.

The risk still exists despite current defenses, such as lightning protection for vital infrastructure like the communications facilities of NTT Group.

NTT is responding by developing its lightning protection technology with the goal of completely preventing lightning strikes on important infrastructure and metropolitan areas.

The use and range of traditional lightning rods are limited, especially in difficult-to-equip places like wind turbines and outdoor event spaces.

NTT has been investigating drone-based lightning induction, a cutting-edge technique that uses drones to monitor thunderclouds, intentionally trigger lightning, and safely reroute it, in order to remedy this issue.

In a recent field demonstration under natural thundercloud conditions, NTT, in collaboration with Fujitsu, successfully tested this concept.

The experiment featured two key technologies: lightning induction using electric field fluctuations to attract lightning to a drone, and a specially designed lightning-resistant cage that prevents drone failure even under direct strikes.

Lightning safety breakthrough

In the hilly area of Hamada City, Shimane Prefecture, Japan, a first successful drone-based lightning-triggering experiment was carried out between December 2024 and January 2025.

To safeguard vital infrastructure, the test sought to create technologies that can safely control and actively trigger lightning.

The researchers employed a ground-based field mill to track the strength of the electric field during the experiment.

A drone with a lightning-resistant cage was flown to 984 feet (300 meters) on December 13, 2024, when an oncoming thundercloud increased the electric field.

The drone was wired to a ground switch, and when the switch was turned on, an abrupt shift in the electric field caused a lightning strike.

It was the first documented instance of a drone actively causing lightning, according to NTT.

A lightning-resistant cage and a technique for initiating electric field fluctuations were two significant advancements that the experiment showcased.

Even after a strike, the drone remained stable in mid-air thanks to the metal cage’s ability to distribute magnetic fields and redirect lightning current away from delicate drone components.

A man who studied the science of humans and culture unexpectedly stumbled upon a restricted section of Area 51 in Nevada — and lived to tell the tale of his wild experience.

In 1996, Jerry Freeman innocently set out on a week-long mission to follow the trail of the pioneers who headed out west to California in 1849 to find gold.

The pioneers never made it to their destination, but they did leave behind several journals on the border of Area 51 — which is about 80 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

It became Freeman’s mission to find those lost inscriptions. However, despite so many years passing, the Air Force was not keen on Freeman accessing the restricted area.

As a result, the ambitious man set out at night to get the job done. While he might not have found what he was looking for, Freeman stumbled upon something even better.

Freeman described his experience to journalist and UFO researcher George Knapp, recalling one night when he came across a possible alien spacecraft, according to the Daily Mail.

“It looked like a dry lake bed to me, nothing else, but at night it was a different story,” Freeman said.

“I could clearly see what were security lights on the perimeters and I could see lights that opened and closed near the center of the lake,” the anthropologist continued.

Freeman was only able to observe for a few minutes, but during that short period of time, he felt vibrations under his feet that indicated that something was being tested.

“I think if they’d have caught me in there that they’d have lit me up like a Roman candle,” he admitted.

A roughly six-meter-tall Evangelion Unit 01 statue made its appearance in Hamamatsu, central Japan, on Sunday as part of a local government tourism campaign through next February in the hope of cashing in on the city's connection to the popular anime film.

The purple giant humanoid robot from the film "Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time" will tower over the lobby of Hamamatsu city hall in Shizuoka Prefecture until late January next year, including on weekends and public holidays.

About 170 people lined up in front of the municipal headquarters to see the statue ahead of the public opening at 10:30 a.m.

During the opening ceremony, the city firefighters' music band played the popular theme song of the anime.

The local initiative, which celebrates the 30th anniversary of the original TV series, follows Evangelion-themed campaigns launched in recent years by Tenryu Hamanako Railroad Co. and Enshu Railway Co. centered around the city's Tenryu Futamata Station - a model for Village-3 in the 2021 movie.

The station has since been inundated with "anime pilgrims" eager to see a 3.6-meter-tall "Spear of Longinus," a giant extraterrestrial weapon central to the story, installed in 2023 at its train depot.

Evangelion-themed trains also run at certain times through the station.

As part of Hamamatsu's new campaign, the two local railway operators began sales of one-day unlimited ride passes featuring images of the main character Shinji Ikari and fellow pilot Kaworu Nagisa.

Visitors can complete a stamp rally covering 21 spots along the Tenryu Hamanako and Enshu railway lines, with cutouts of Evangelion characters placed at certain locations. Those who collect 10 stamps will receive an exclusive sticker.

"Through Evangelion, I want people to rediscover the appeal of Hamamatsu's tourism and culture," said Mayor Yusuke Nakano, while also expressing interest in partnering with Hakone in Kanagawa Prefecture and Ube in Yamaguchi Prefecture.

Hakone served as the model for the postapocalyptic fortified city of Tokyo-3, while Ube is the hometown of series director Hideaki Anno. Both locations have also run Evangelion-related tourism campaigns in the past.

Federal judge orders Trump administration to rehire all Voice of America and Radio Free Asia staff

A federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to restore Voice of America, saying the effort to gut the 80-year-old government-funded news service likely violated the law and Constitution.

U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth said the administration’s rush to dismantle the VOA and related news organizations funded by the U.S. Agency for Global Media resulted in the suspension of hundreds of journalists and employees. It put some overseas correspondents at risk of being deported to their home countries, the judge noted. And Lamberth said the silencing of VOA — for the first time in 80 years — also deprived hundreds of millions of listeners of a reliable source of news in parts of the world that lack a free press.

Lamberth said the administration offered virtually no justification for the draconian cuts, suggesting it was working to comply with President Donald Trump’s March 14 executive order requiring a significant scaling back of the agency. Yet the cuts were so bone-deep, Lamberth said, that they likely violated even Trump’s command that the programs continue to operate at legally required minimum levels of service.

“They took immediate and drastic action to slash USAGM, without considering its statutorily or constitutionally required functions as required by the plain language of the [executive order], and without regard to the harm inflicted on employees, contractors, journalists, and media consumers around the world,” Lamberth said. “It is hard to fathom a more straightforward display of arbitrary and capricious actions than the Defendants’ actions here.”

The judge, a Reagan appointee, is ordering the Trump administration to immediately restore all employees and contractors to their news programs and unfreeze funding streams for other affiliated networks like Radio Free Asia and Middle East Broadcasting Networks. He also ordered officials to restore VOA programming to fulfill the legal mandate that it “serve as a consistently reliable and authoritative source of news.”

A spokesperson for USAGM did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The ruling is the latest legal blow to the administration’s effort to dramatically remake the federal bureaucracy, and one aimed squarely at one of the U.S. government’s most visible and widely known properties around the world. Other judges have grappled with lawsuits aimed at dismantling government agencies, such as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and U.S. Agency for International Development, raising alarms that the administration appeared to be attempting to permanently obliterate them before courts could act.

Lamberth nodded to that concern, noting that had courts not stepped in multiple times, several of USAGM’s prominent news services might already be gone. He noted that as of now, the only operational news service under USAGM is a 33-person unit in the Office of Cuba Broadcasting.

Trump and his allies have decried Voice of America as a bastion of “far-left” ideology and suggested it doesn’t serve U.S. government interests.

Lamberth indicated in his ruling that the sweeping effort to break VOA appeared to be based in part on those views, despite claims that the administration was not targeting First Amendment-protected speech.

Lamberth also indicated that the effort was likely a direct breach of the Constitution, saying the administration’s “unwillingness to expend funds in accordance with the congressional appropriations laws is a direct affront to the power of the legislative branch.”

“VOA has been operating under statutory mandate and with steady congressional appropriations for over eighty years, and in so doing, has cultivated an audience of 425 million listeners who rely on VOA’s output — particularly in areas of the world where a free press is otherwise unavailable,” Lamberth wrote. “The Networks have contributed to U.S. international broadcasting by almost exclusively relying on their yearly congressional appropriations, which have been uninterrupted for decades before March 15, 2025. There is no sign that the defendants considered these longstanding reliance interests before taking the sweeping actions at issue here.”

What are the chances he left the same message with Boasberg in the wee hours of March 15? In fact (and I will look at transcript), I believe Boasberg admitted to being "in communication" with ACLU prior to issuing any order or setting hearings.

Hendrix denied the emergency motion bc Trump adm said the 2 anonymous Venezuelan illegals cited in the lawsuit would not be removed. Butjust like in the Boasberg casethat was not enough.

ACLU was demanding the case be converted into a class action suit covering ANYONE in the jurisdiction that might be subject to the Alien Enemies Act-which is what Boasberg did before his "return the planes" stunt.

ACLU was hoping for same outcome here. Hendrix was not playing their game. Even so, he was advancing the suit on Good Friday-but that wasn't good enough for ACLU, which is used to running roughshod over the courts.

They immediately appealed, taking the matter out of Hendrix's hands. Then they cried to SCOTUS, who bailed ACLU (and the illegals) out.

SCOTUS just got involved in what looks like a very dirty case from the start. Good to see at least one judge stand up for himself and for the process.

Judge Hendrix had to admonish ACLU twice in one day about not following the rules.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. described the many manufactured food products offered that are high in calories but low in nutritional value.

“So, strawberry flavoring in food, but there’s no nutrients. It’s sugar.” Kennedy said. “Your body is craving that, but it doesn’t get filled up. It doesn’t give you nutrition, but you want to eat more.”

Kennedy, a longtime health advocate, has championed President Donald Trump’s call for “fresh thinking on nutrition” as part of the Make America Healthy Again initiative. The secretary spoke in Indianapolis on April 15 in support of Gov. Mike Braun’s announcement of nine health-related executive orders.

Kennedy has urged states to prohibit the use of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funds to purchase certain foods with high sugar content but little nutritional value.

SNAP, colloquially known as food stamps, is a federal program administered by the states that helps nearly 42 million low-income Americans pay for food.

To change the list of foods eligible for purchase with SNAP funds, states must request a waiver from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). A handful of states, including Indiana, are doing that.

Advocates call this a commonsense way to promote better food choices.

Some critics say the initiative amounts to virtue signaling, a symbolic action unlikely to produce any positive effect.

Kennedy hopes it will fuel a movement toward healthier food consumption that will reverse the growing prevalence of obesity among Americans.

Junk Food Origins

Kennedy and others have blamed the glut of tasty but vacuous foods on big tobacco companies, which entered the food industry more than 60 years ago.

In the 1960s, R.J. Reynolds and Philip Morris, then the largest tobacco brands, began developing children’s beverages including Hawaiian Punch, Kool-Aid, Capri Sun, and Tang, according to a report from The BMJ, formerly the British Medical Journal.

“Tobacco executives transferred their knowledge of marketing to young people and expanded product lines using colours, flavours, and marketing strategies originally designed to market cigarettes,” a team of researchers reported.

The Supreme Court ruled that weekends and holidays cannot be counted when foreign nationals are given deadlines to leave the United States. In a split 5-4 decision, a majority of justices on the nation’s highest court ruled in favor of Hugo Abisai Monsalvo Velazquez, a Mexican national who had been living unlawfully in the U.S. for years and ordered deported. Velazquez successfully argued that his 60-day notice to leave the country — which ended on a Saturday — should have provided more flexibility for weekends and holidays.

Psychotropic Drugs May Be To Blame For Mass Shootings

Tennessee has just passed a law requiring toxicology testing for mass killers. That means the bodies of these sickos will now get a full drug screening during autopsy, including for psychotropic drugs like antidepressants. It’s about time.

Other states should follow suit. Wyoming is already considering doing so. In fact, I’ll go further: RFK Jr. should strike while the iron is hot and announce an investigation at the federal level. He’s spoken before about the links between antidepressants and school shootings, and of course, he’s taken more than his fair share of flak for it. Now he can actually do something.

Tennessee Bill HB1349/SB1146 has passed both houses of the state legislature. It will mandate a full panel of toxicology screening for mass killers — defined as anybody who kills more than four people — and a detailed report will be made available to the public in each case. Investigators will study drug interactions in killers’ bodies, because combinations of drugs can have different effects than they would individually. Investigators will also consult with providers of mental health services in cases where the killer has used them.

The law was drafted with the help of the advocacy group AbleChild. Its co-founder, Sheila Matthews, had this to say: “This law isn’t just about Tennessee. It’s a blueprint for dismantling the wall of secrecy protecting industries that profit from ignorance. When someone commits mass murder, the public has a right to know if mind-altering drugs played a role.”

The issue of psychotropic drugs and their role in mass killings, especially school shootings, has been mired in controversy ever since it was revealed that one of the Columbine killers, Eric Harris, was on the powerful antidepressant Luvox, way back in April of 1999.

Do these drugs play a role or not?

RFK Jr. has long maintained there’s a plausible link between antidepressant use and school shootings. In an interview with Elon Musk two years ago, he said, “Prior to the introduction of Prozac, we had none of these events.”

During his confirmation hearings in February, he maintained that the link between antidepressants and mass killings “should be studied, along with other possible culprits.”

He went on to say antidepressants are overprescribed and that they’re dangerous and addictive.

“I know people, including members of my family, who’ve had a much worse time getting off SSRIs [selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, one of the main classes of antidepressant] than people coming off heroin,” Kennedy said.

Kennedy’s questioners in the Senate, of course, wanted to make him out to be a kook and a conspiracy theorist and pretty much every other bad thing under the sun, and they seized on comments and opinions they thought made him sound as kooky and unhinged as possible. But the truth is, when it comes to antidepressants and violence, the evidence is compelling. Broadly, there’s a well-established link between SSRIs and violence. For example, a massive Swedish study from 2020, looking at over three-quarters of a million people, showed a clear link between SSRI use and violent crime, especially in 15-24 and 25-34 year olds. The risk was elevated even up to 12 weeks after users stopped taking the drugs. The US FDA’s adverse event reporting system (FAERS) shows that SSRIs are consistently associated with violence among adults.

There aren’t many studies that look at school shootings and antidepressants use in particular, but those that do claim there is no causal link. In so many specific cases, though, we simply don’t know whether the shooter was on antidepressants or not. That’s where laws like HB1349/SB1146 come in: let’s do some tests and find out. It’s hard to understand the objections, at least the moral ones anyway. During its passage through the two houses of the Tennessee legislature, Bill HB1349/SB1146 was subject to some pretty fierce challenges. On the one hand, you had people like Rep. James Carter, who claimed the bill was simply a distraction from the real issue with mass killings: guns. I can understand why this objection is raised — guns really do kill people, in the same way that knives and bats and pretty much any object, from a brick to a bookend, can be used to kill someone — but so what? Which is to say, it’s a facile objection and one that shouldn’t be entertained, unless America wants to become like Britain and start removing the tips from kitchen knives and requiring licences for dessert spoons.

Other objections, like those of Sen. Lisa Monroe, were just, well, bizarre. She questioned whether mandatory testing was a violation of the killer’s right to privacy in death, which is a question nobody, anywhere, has ever asked before — with good reason. Some thoughts are best left unspoken, Lisa.

The pecuniary objections, which weren’t given voice by any of the senators or representatives — they’re much easier to understand, and they get to the heart of the matter, I think. Drug makers have untold billions of dollars riding on these drugs, which are prescribed to tens of millions of people the world over, not just in America. In Scotland, a full quarter of the entire adult population is now prescribed antidepressants, and a further third are also prescribed a variety of mental-health drugs from benzodiazepines to so-called “z-drugs” like zopiclone and zolpidem. In America, it’s something like 20% of adults over a certain age who are on antidepressants.

Makers of antidepressants already have to deal with embarrassing questions about their efficacy, like a massive meta-study in the British Medical Journal, which recently showed just 15% of users enjoy benefits they wouldn’t get from a placebo. These questions don’t go away, even as rates of prescription rise. The questions are only — rightly — asked with greater urgency. A proven link to mass killings would be a disaster.

But if Make America Healthy Again is about anything, it’s about getting to the bottom — the real bottom — of what’s making America so sick. And only a sick society could regularly produce people who go into schools with guns and kill as many kids as they can. If antidepressants are even partially to blame, Americans have a right to know and to seek a different form of treatment.
