George Santos Sentenced to More Than Seven Years in Prison
Former congressman George Santos was sentenced to more than seven years in federal prison and two years of supervised release on Friday.
Santos, 36, had pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft last year.
George Santos was sentenced on Friday to more than seven years in prison in what is the culmination of one of the wildest political scandals in memory.
The disgraced former congressman sobbed as Judge Joanna Seybert handed down his sentence, which includes two years supervised release, in a Long Island federal courtroom. “I offer my deepest apologies,” he said, according to the Associated Press. “I cannot rewrite the past, but I can control the road ahead.”
Santos, 36, pleaded guilty to counts of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft last summer. Prosecutors were granted the 87-month-long sentence they sought for the man they called a “pathological liar and fraudster.” He has been ordered to surrender by July 25.
In 2022, Santos was largely unknown when he ran for a congressional seat covering parts of Queens and Long Island that was left open by Democrat Tom Suozzi. Though the North Shore Leader, a small local newspaper, unearthed discrepancies with Santos’s financial disclosures prior to the election, it wasn’t until he secured his victory that fall that more questions began to surface about his past.
What emerged was a seemingly endless wave of falsehoods: lies about Santos’s employment history, his education, and even the cause of his own mother’s death. Deeper still were the inconsistencies with Santos’s campaign finances and his net worth, including reports of dubious contributions.
In 2023, federal prosecutors unveiled an indictment against Santos, alleging the representative defrauded campaign donors by directing their contributions to his personal accounts and using the funds to purchase designer clothes and pay bills. They also alleged that he fraudulently applied for pandemic unemployment benefits despite being employed. A subsequent superseding indictment alleged Santos conspired to inflate his campaign’s financial records to qualify for assistance from the national party as well as stole the identities and financial information of his donors to make contributions in their names unknowingly. The 23 total counts against Santos ranged from wire fraud, money laundering, aggravated identity theft to making false statements to the Federal Election Commission.
Santos was initially defiant, rebuffing calls for his resignation and vowing to run for reelection. But the beleaguered representative soon made history in 2023 by becoming only the sixth member of the House to be expelled from the political body following a damning ethics report that found “substantial evidence” of his rule breaking.

Today America confronts a new era of great power competition and the rise of a multipolar order with a State Departmentthat stifles creativity, lacks accountability, and occasionally veers into outright hostility to American interests. The Department has long struggled to perform basic diplomatic functions, even as both its size and cost to the American taxpayer has ballooned over the past fifteen years. The problem is not a lack of money, or even dedicated talent, but rather a system where everything takes too much time, costs too much money, involves too many individuals, and all too often ends up failing the American people.
Bureaus and offices fight to be included on the approval chains for the most mundane of memos, only then to reach agreement on drafts that are bloated in length while stripped of all meaning. Motivated and creative State Department employees see their ideas watered down by turf battles until they give up, disillusioned, while the inboxes of senior officials are inundated with hundreds of requests for approval. While the talented and loyal are driven into indifference,radical ideologues and bureaucratic infighters have learned to play on this exhaustion to push through their own agendasthat are often at odds with those of the President and undermine the interests of the United States.
An example of an out-of-control Departmentis the Global Engagement Center (GEC) that I shuttered last week. The office engaged with media outlets and platforms to censor speech it disagreed with, including that of the President of the United States, who its director in 2019 accused of employing “the same techniques of disinformation as the Russians.” Despite Congress voting to shutter it, the GEC simply renamed itself and continued operating as if nothing had changed.
Unless we confront the underlying bureaucratic culturethat prevents the State Department from carrying out an effective foreign policy, while allowing offices like GEC to flourish in the shadows,nothing will change. That is whyI am initiating a broad reorganizationof the Department to address the steady growth of bureaucracy, duplication of functions, and capture by special interests that have crippled American Foreign Policy.
We will drain the bloated, bureaucratic swamp, empowering the Department from the ground up. That means regional bureaus and our embassies will now have the tools necessary to advance America’s interests abroad because region-specific functions will be streamlined to increase functionality.Redundant offices will also be removed, and non-statutory programs misalignedwith America’s core national interests will cease to exist. All non-security foreign assistance will be consolidated in regional bureaus charged with implementing U.S. foreign policy in specific geographic areas.
This will ensure every bureau and officein the Department of Statehas clear responsibility and mission. If something concerns Africa, the bureau of African Affairs will handle it. Economic policy will be consolidated under the Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy, and Environment, while the responsibilities for security assistance and arms control will be united under the Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security.

The Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Laborbecame a platform for left-wing activiststo wage vendettas against “anti-woke” leaders in nations such as Poland, Hungary, and Brazil, and to transform their hatred of Israel into concrete policies such as arms embargoes.
The Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migrationfunneled millions of taxpayer dollars to international organizations and NGOsthat facilitated mass migration around the world,including the invasion on our southern border.
To transfer the remaining functions of USAID to such a monstrosity of bureaus would be to undo DOGE’s work to build a more efficient and accountable government.Consequently, the bureaus and offices in the J Family will be placed under the new Coordinatorfor Foreign Assistance and Humanitarian Affairs charged with returning them to their original mission of advancing human rights and religious freedom, not promoting radical causes at taxpayer expense.
The American people deserve a State Department willing and able to advance their safety, security, and prosperity around the world, one respectful of their tax dollars and the sacred trust of government service, and one prepared to meet the immense challenges of the 21st Century. Starting this week, they will have one.

“We are facing what appears to be a targeted strike against judges in the form of intimidation by unknown sources,” U.S. District Court Judge Esther Salas said during “Speak Up For Justice!,” a nationwide online forum Tuesday to address an escalating storm of retributive political outrage and covert retaliation against U.S. judges from angry extremists.
Salas described a new tactic: “Hundreds of pizzas have been delivered to judges all over this country in the last few months. And in the last few weeks — judges’ children.” Salas said her late son’s name was included with pizza deliveries this week. Daniel Anderl was shot dead in 2020 at the front door of the family’s New Jersey home by an angry lawyer Salas had previously ruled against.
“And now Daniel’s name was being weaponized to bring fear to judges and their children. You’re saying to those judges — ‘You want to end up like Judge Salas? You want to end up like Judge Salas’ son?'” she said.
Salas urged federal investigators to find those responsible for the deliveries and has urged other states to adopt laws similar to the one bearing her son’s name. New Jersey’s Daniel’s Law protects the private data of judges, police and public employees.
Tuesday’s panel called for lawyers and judicial groups to stand up to intensified partisan attacks.
“Increasingly these attacks have included threats and attempts to intimidate judges by threatening impeachment based on nothing more than they disagree with the ruling the judges made,” said former U.S. District Judge Paul Grimm.
Panelists did not name names. But the most recent clash involved the Trump administration’s fury over being thwarted in an immigrant deportation case, with officials like Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller decrying “JUDICIAL TYRANNY — and Marxist Judges!” and President Trump posting on a social media platform, “This judge, like many of the Crooked Judges’ I am forced to appear before, should be IMPEACHED!!!”
Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts rebuked Trump, noting, “For more than two centuries, it has been established that impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision. The normal appellate review process exists for that purpose.”
Also on Tuesday, former Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli spoke about a new lobbying group, the Public Safety Information Protection Coalition, that’s also focused on shielding judges’ private data.
Gov. Phil Murphy signed Daniel’s Law in 2020. The statute was amended in 2023 to let third-party data protection firms like Atlas Privacy file lawsuits if companies didn’t delete their clients’ private data fast enough.
“Right now, the law is in such a state of disarray that it’s not being enforced, and that’s a bad thing,” Molinelli said. “What matters is, Daniel’s law needs to be fixed.” He said lawmakers should restore the original Daniel’s Law and then fix the problems surrounding data privacy.
Atlas has argued that Daniel’s Law is “too great a threat to the business models” of companies that harvest and use data. In a statement too late for broadcast, its spokesman said, “Daniel’s Law has been upheld as constitutional by every federal and state court in which it has been challenged, and these data brokers know New Jersey and other states are finally ready to hold them accountable for their continued and willful non-compliance.”

Esther Salas Home attack
On July 19, 2020, an assailant targeted Salas's family at their home. Daniel, aged 20, opened the door when the assailant knocked. The assailant then opened fire, killing Daniel at the scene. Mark was also shot multiple times and left in a critical but stable condition.[23][24][25] Salas was in the basement at the time of the attack and was not injured. The Federal Bureau of Investigation led the investigation into the attack on Salas' family home in conjunction with the U.S. Marshals Service and local law enforcement.[21]
The following day, the FBI identified 72-year-old attorney Roy Den Hollander as the primary suspect; Den Hollander was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the town of Rockland in upstate New York.[21][26][27] Den Hollander was a self-described antifeminist previously known for filing unsuccessful lawsuits against "ladies night" promotions at bars and nightclubs, as well as suing Columbia University for offering women's studies classes.[21][28] Den Hollander had appeared before Salas in connection with a lawsuit he brought challenging the military's male-only draft.[26][29] In various writings, Den Hollander ranted about his hatred of women, used racist and sexist terms to disparage Salas, and spoke of his personal grievances.[27] Den Hollander described himself as a "men's rights" activist but was ejected from the National Coalition for Men and is also a suspect in the shooting death of a men's rights lawyer Marc Angelucci at his home in Crestline, California, earlier the same month.[30]
Salas was interviewed for a 60 Minutes report in February 2021 about this attack, in which 60 Minutes also revealed the discovery of the gunman's planning for an attack on Justice Sonia Sotomayor.[31]
The shooting led to the Daniel Anderl Judicial Security and Privacy Act of 2021, endorsed by the Senate Judiciary Committee on December 12 of that year.[32][33] The Act was signed into law by President Joe Biden on December 23, 2022.[34]

Specifically, the complaint says Dugan assisted Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, a Mexican immigrant, avoid being arrested by federal immigration officials at the Milwaukee County Courthouse after he appeared in her courtroom for a pre-trial conference on April 18. Flores-Ruiz is facing three misdemeanor battery counts.
Two federal agents eventually chased Flores-Ruiz down outside the courthouse and apprehended him at the intersection of West State Street and 10th Street downtown, according to the complaint.
"Hannah C. Dugan has committed herself to the rule of law and the principles of due process for her entire career as a lawyer and a judge," an attorney for Dugan said in a statement. "Judge Dugan will defend herself vigorously, and looks forward to being exonerated."
On April 25, Dugan appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Stephen C. Dries during a brief hearing in a packed courtroom at the federal courthouse. Dugan, wearing a black dress with white flowers, made no public comments during the brief hearing.
At the hearing, Dries asked if prosecutors were seeking detention, and they said they were not. He answered that he did not believe that the charges were “eligible” for detention.
As it ended, her attorney, Craig Mastantuono, told the court: "Judge Dugan wholeheartedly regrets and protests her arrest. It was not made in the interest of public safety." Dugan is now being represented by former U.S. Attorney Steve Biskupic.
Dugan made her federal court appearance a little more than two hours after she was arrested at the county courthouse at about 8 a.m. April 25.
Federal prosecutors Kelly Watzka and Keith Alexander declined to comment as they walked out of the courtroom after a brief hearing.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on April 23 did not deny that he’s considering removing COVID-19 vaccines from the childhood vaccination schedule.
“We need to ask questions and we need to consult with parents, we need to give people informed consent, and we shouldn’t be making recommendations that are not good for the population,” Kennedy said during an appearance on Fox News.
Politico, citing anonymous sources, reported this week that Kennedy is mulling the removal of COVID-19 shots from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s schedule for children.
An official with the Department of Health and Human Services, which Kennedy heads, told The Epoch Times in an email that “no final decision has been made.”
The CDC, which is part of the department, did not return an inquiry.
Kennedy said on Fox that President Donald Trump does not believe that any person should be required to receive a vaccine, and noted that all vaccines carry risks.
“The COVID vaccine, the recommendation for kids was always dubious,” Kennedy said.
“And it was dubious because kids had almost no risk for COVID-19. Some kids—certain kids that had very profound morbidities—may have a slight risk. Most kids don’t, so why are we giving this to tens of millions of kids? Because the vaccine itself does have profound risks.”
Kennedy noted that established side effects of the COVID-19 vaccine include a form of heart inflammation called myocarditis and a related condition called pericarditis. He also pointed out that 15 vaccinated participants in Pfizer’s clinical trial died, compared with 14 participants who did not receive the company’s vaccine.
Three COVID-19 vaccines are currently available for use in the United States: one from Pfizer, one from Moderna, and one from Novavax.
Advisers to the CDC recommended in 2022 that the agency add COVID-19 vaccines to the schedule, concluding that the benefits of the shots outweighed the risks. The CDC in 2023 added them to the schedule.
According to the schedule, all children who have never received a COVID-19 vaccine should receive at least one dose, depending on their age, while those who have received a vaccine in the past should receive at least one additional dose. Unlike many vaccines on the schedule, the COVID-19 vaccine has not been made compulsory for school attendance in states.
Kennedy said during his confirmation hearings, “I recommend that children follow the CDC schedule, and I will support the CDC schedule when I get in there if I’m fortunate enough to be confirmed.”

LOUIVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville officials have agreed to pay almost $1.6 million in damages and attorneys’ fees to settle the lawsuit Josephson v. Ganzel brought by Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys representing a respected psychiatrist whom the university demoted, harassed, and ultimately fired for speaking out on the harms of “transitioning” children.
In September of last year, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit ruled that Josephson’s case should proceed to trial, declaring public university officials can be held personally accountable for censoring professors or retaliating against them as the University of Louisville did in Josephson’s case.
“After several years, free speech and common sense have scored a major victory on college campuses,” said ADF Senior Counsel Travis Barham.“As early as 2014, Dr. Josephson saw the truth behind dangerous procedures that activists were pushing on children struggling with their sex. He risked his livelihood and reputation to speak the truth boldly, and the university punished him for expressing his opinion—ultimately by dismissing him.But public universities have no business punishing professors simply because they hold different views. Dr. Josephson’s case illustrates why—because the latest and best science confirms what he stated all along. Hopefully, other public universities will learn from this that if they violate the First Amendment, they can be held accountable, and it can be very expensive.”
“I’m glad to finally receive vindication for voicing what I know is true,” said Josephson. “Children deserve better than life-altering procedures that mutilate their bodies and destroy their ability to lead fulfilling lives. In spite of the circumstances I suffered through with my university,I’m overwhelmed to see that my case helped lead the way for other medical practitioners to see the universal truth that altering biological sex is impossibly dangerouswhile acceptance of one’s sex leads to flourishing.”
The university hired Josephson to head up the then-struggling Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychology, which he turned around into a program that received a national reputation for its work. He received high praise from both the university and outside psychiatric associations for his work. Josephson was also sought out for advice on how to improve and lead other child and adolescent psychiatry divisions.
But when Josephson, during a Heritage Foundation panel discussion,spoke in his personal capacity against subjecting children to harmful drugs and surgery in radical, misguided attempts to treat gender dysphoria, university officials—responding to demands from activists at the university’s LGBT Center—demoted him to the role of a junior faculty member andstripped him of his teaching duties.
University officials then conspired to get him fired. These efforts included keeping an “Allan tracking document,” solicited complaints from alumni who were coached on what to say, and discussing the need to generate “strong documentation” to avoid his reappointment. In February 2019, the university announced that it would not renew his contract,terminating his employment at the university after nearly 15 years of distinguished service.
In light of the settlement and the agreement on attorneys’ fees, ADF attorneys filed a stipulated dismissal of the remaining claims in the case on Monday.

Speaking with Time Magazine, Trump said he would “absolutely” sign a law banning members of Congress from trading stocks, slamming Pelosi for allegedly profiting off insider information during her career in public life.
“I watched Nancy Pelosi get rich through insider information, and I would be okay with it [a ban],” Trump stated.
“If they send that to me, I would do it.”
The comment comes amid long-standing accusations that Pelosi has suspiciously timed trades that coincide with legislation and regulation that passes through Capitol Hill.
Though Pelosi insists she personally doesn’t trade stocks, insisting its her husband Paul’s domain, her financial disclosures tell a different story. According to Quiver Quantitative, the Pelosis’ net worth has more than doubled since 2015, skyrocketing from $121 million to $253 million.
