The Gargoyles' Eclipse

In dramatic silhouette against a cloudy daytime sky over Paris, France, gargoyles cast their monstrous gaze outward from the west facade of Notre Dame Cathedral. Taken on March 29, this telephoto snapshot also captures the dramatic silhouette of a New Moon against the bright solar disk in a partial solar eclipse. Happening high in Parisian skies, the partial eclipse was close to its maximum phase of about 23 percent. Occurring near the end of the first eclipse season of 2025, this partial solar eclipse followed the total eclipse of the Full Moon on March 13/14. The upcoming second eclipse season of 2025 will see a total lunar eclipse on September 7/8 and partial solar eclipse on September 21. The partial solar eclipse will be seen only from locations in planet Earth's southern hemisphere.

Trump's Global Tariffs Send Stock Markets Crashing Around The World

Saturday, the banks are mostly open. I strongly recommend you go in and get SOME cash. Not to pay Bills, but to SURVIVE for a month or two. I just got the word: Margin Calls began this morning. Hedge funds have been hit with the biggest margin calls since Covid shut down huge parts of the global economy in 2020, after Donald Trump’s tariffs triggered a powerful rout in global financial markets.

Wall Street banks have asked their hedge fund clients to pony-up more money as security for their loans because the value of their holdings had fallen as stock values dropped, according to three people familiar with the matter. Several big banks issued the largest margin calls to their clients since the beginning of the pandemic in early 2020. I am told these Margin Calls are "much larger than during the 2008 Great Financial Crisis."

The margin calls underscore the intense turbulence in global markets on Thursday and Friday as Trump’s tariffs announcement was followed by retaliatory duties by China, and other countries readied their own responses. Wall Street’s S&P 500 share index was set to post its worst week since 2020, while oil and riskier corporate bonds have sold off heavily.

The real danger of the stock market dropping like it is, is that as stock values drop, the Banks will make Margin Calls to those borrowers telling them they need to pony-up more money to collateralize their loans. Some who borrowed will be able to pay, others will not. When they cannot pay, the Bank "calls-in the loan" and the Borrower is in Default.

As more and more defaults happen, more stock values plunge, triggering more stock selling which only makes the whole thing worse. It feeds on itself!

This immediately triggers the "Credit Default Swaps." Banks went to Insurance companies and bought protection if the Borrowers Default. That protection is Credit Default Swaps: If the loan defaults, the Insurance company pays the Swap.

But as this stock slide continues, more and more loans will default and some Insurance companies may NOT be able to pay-off on those Credit Default Swaps. The Insurance companies go under.

When they go under, all the OTHER banks that they insured must then book losses ON THE SAME DAY... and the Banks go under.

This is very much like what happened to cause the Great Financial Crisis of 2008.

Department of Defense completes Underway Recovery Test 12 with NASA

NASA’s Exploration Ground Systems Landing and Recovery team and the Department of Defense successfully completed the third recovery test for the crewed Artemis II mission aboard amphibious transport dock USS Somerset (LPD 25) off the coast of San Diego, March 31.

The primary objectives for Underway Recovery Test 12 were to demonstrate and evaluate the processes, procedures, and hardware for recovery operations for the crewed Artemis II mission around the moon.

“The U.S. Navy and NASA have a long history of partnering together to support the recovery of astronauts and equipment used for space exploration and research,” said Capt. Andrew Koy, commanding officer, USS Somerset.

“The inherent capabilities of our amphibious transport dock ships are the perfect combination to ensuring the Artemis capsule and crew are safely recovered following their mission.

The well deck, flight deck, medical facilities, and immense cargo carrying capacity crewed by highlight trained and proficient Sailors, continues the NASA and Department of Defense legacy.”

Underway Recovery Test 12 allowed NASA and the Department of Defense to practice operational procedures for Artemis II, including timing of crew extraction from the capsule to the ship’s medical bay and day-and-night recovery procedures to support certification of personnel and processes for Artemis II mission.

Artemis II astronaut U.S. Navy Capt. Victor Glover embarked the ship for Underway Recovery Test 12.

“This puts my two loves together, space and the navy. I am really in my happy place here,” said Glover.

“The partnership between NASA and the U.S. Navy is a testament to a fostered symbiotic relationship built on trust, where our needs are met by their unparalleled expertise and resources.

Together, we’re not just working side by side; we’re one team! As we prepare to send the next group of explorers around the Moon and beyond, we’re pushing the boundaries of human achievement, all thanks to the strength of this incredible partnership.”

Working in support of U.S. Space Command, additional U.S. Navy units included Expeditionary Strike Group 3, Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 23, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group 1, and Amphibious Construction Battalion 1, with support from U.S. Air Force’s First Air Force, Detachment 3, and U.S. Space Force’s 45th Space Launch Delta Weather Squadron.

After the 2022 successful recovery of the Orion spacecraft from the Artemis I mission using amphibious transport dock USS Portland (LPD 27), and with the addition of crew for the Artemis II mission, the recovery teams modified their timelines and procedures to ensure the astronauts will be safely on the recovery ship within two hours after splashing down in the Pacific Ocean.

After a 10-day mission, NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen will reenter Earth’s atmosphere at 25,000 mph, landing approximately 60 miles off the coast of California, where one of the U.S. Navy’s amphibious transport dock ships will recover the capsule and crew with NASA and DoD personnel.

JCB is set to double the size of a new factory currently under construction in Texas in response to President Donald Trump’s tariffs

The machinery maker confirmed today that newly-announced tariffs will significantly impact its business in the short-term.

Today JCB Chairman Anthony Bamford said: “JCB has been in business for 80 years this year and we are well accustomed to change.

“The United States is the largest market for construction equipment in the world and President Trump has galvanised us into evaluating how we can make even more products in the USA, which has been an important market for JCB since we sold our first machine there in 1964.”

JCB last year bought 400 acres of land in San Antonio after recognising the need to produce even more machines in North America, where the firm’s existing manufacturing plant in Savannah, Georgia, has operated for 25 years and employs around 1,000 people.

Its original plan for a 500,000 square feet factory in San Antonio has now been revised and JCB is forging ahead with plans to double its size to one million square feet.

Science tends to remember the names of those whose work echoes long after the lab coats are folded away—and Melba Roy Mouton is one of them.

As an African American woman making waves in both science and education, she left a legacy that still shines bright.

Born in 1929 in Fairfax, Virginia, Mouton came of age during a turning point in history, right between the aftermath of World War II and the start of the space race.

Instead of getting lost in the theoretical clouds, Mouton kept her feet firmly planted in the real-world math trenches.

She snagged both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Howard University, where she not only aced her courses but also got involved in Future Teachers of America.

A Numbers Whiz with Purpose

Driven by a deep sense of mission, she put her math chops to work at the Army Map Service and later at the Census Bureau.

There, she wasn’t just crunching numbers—she was charting the future, using data to track how the country was expanding and to help plan for what came next.

But it was her move to NASA that truly launched her career into orbit. In 1959, she joined the Goddard Space Flight Center, just in time for humanity’s first serious foray beyond the atmosphere.

There, Mouton took on the massive task of tracking and crunching data for some of the earliest space-bound objects, including the legendary Echo 1 satellite in 1960.

Thanks to her sharp data skills and uncanny knack for predicting orbital paths, she became a cornerstone of the early space program, where even the tiniest miscalculation could mean a mission going sideways—literally.

Consider what Echo 1 represented: it wasn’t just a shiny object floating around up there.

This balloon-like satellite was NASA’s very first experimental step into satellite communications.

It helped test out intercontinental radio, phone, and TV signals, proving that microwave communication from space was more than just sci-fi chatter.

A Life-Long Career

Mouton’s top-notch work didn’t go unnoticed. In 1973, she earned a well-deserved promotion to Assistant Chief of Research Programs in NASA’s Trajectory and Geodynamics Division.

One of her key roles? Overseeing the legendary human computers: a brilliant team of women who crunched numbers by hand to keep space missions on track.

These were the real MVPs before machines took over, calculating rocket paths with nothing but pencils, paper, and pure genius.

Fast-forward to 2016, and the film Hidden Figures finally gave these unsung heroines their time in the spotlight. Long before Hollywood came calling, though, NASA recognized their contributions.

In 1972, Mouton and several of her Black colleagues appeared in an ad in The Afro American newspaper, a clear nod to NASA’s effort to reflect the diversity of the minds powering their missions.

Turns out, Mouton didn’t just calculate trajectories—she helped chart a new course for inclusion, too.

A Leading Lady in Code

While many were still wrapping their heads around basic coding, Mouton was already bending APL to her will.

And here’s a fun twist—Tron, the groundbreaking 1982 Disney film, used that very same language to generate its trippy special effects.

So in a way, Mouton’s field of work helped take both astronauts and arcade warriors to new dimensions.

To honor her contributions, Mouton received the Apollo Achievement Award. But her legacy didn’t stop at Earth’s edge. In May 2022, a spot on the Moon was officially named Mons Mouton.

And the story gets even cooler: Mons Mouton is set to become the touchdown point for NASA’s upcoming VIPER mission (short for Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover).

So, while Mouton may have worked behind the scenes during her lifetime, her name now literally shines on the Moon.

Florida Senate passes bill to ban weather modification and geoengineering

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida Senate lawmakers passed SB 56, which would bar geoengineering and weather modification activities in the state.

The legislation bans the release or injection of chemicals into the atmosphere for the purpose of modifying weather, temperature, or climate.

What it does: SB 56 prohibits any injection, release, or dispersion of chemicals or substances into the atmosphere intended to alter weather patterns or sunlight.

These activities would be considered third-degree felonies, punishable by up to five years in prison and fines up to $100,000.

The House version, HB 477, was amended Wednesday, cutting the bill down from 10 pages to a single page. Reps. Kevin Steele and Debbie Mayfield are sponsors of the bill.

What they are saying: Sen. Ileana Garcia, sponsor of the bill, said the legislation addresses environmental concerns by Floridians. The proposal also has the support of Senate President Ben Albritton.

“Through this bill we are addressing modern environmental concerns brought forward by our constituents and eliminating any ambiguity regarding the legality of weather modification,” Garcia said in a statement. “Currently there is no system in place to track reports and concerns our residents have regarding geoengineering and weather modification.”

“The bill creates a system to log, track, investigate and mitigate if necessary, so residents can separate fact from fiction and have a better understanding of what is happening in their communities,” she said.

“I have heard the conspiracy theories out there, but the fact is we should not be shutting down legitimate concerns. Healthy skepticism is important,” Albritton said. “People have a right to know what is happening. There’s a lot we don’t know in this field of science and people are rightfully concerned.”

“This bill goes a long way to bring peace of mind to our citizens so they can report what they are seeing, and we can make sure it’s lawful activity, not geoengineering or weather modification,” he said.”

In closing: The bill creates a system through the Department of Environmental Protection where Florida residents can report suspected geoengineering activities via email.

DEP will investigate any report that warrants further review and is authorized to refer reports of observed violations to the Department of Health or the Division of Emergency Management. In addition, publicly owned airports are mandated to report any aircraft equipped with devices to modify the weather starting Oct. 1.

Next steps: SB 56 passed on the full senate floor, while the house bill has one more committee stop before it heads to the full floor for consideration. Gov. Ron DeSantis has expressed support for the Senate’s version of the bill.

SpaceX is targeting Saturday, April 5 for a Falcon 9 launch of 28 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

The four-hour launch window opens at 10:40 p.m. ET, with backup opportunities available until Sunday, April 6 at 2:40 a.m. ET. If needed, additional opportunities are also available on Sunday, April 6 starting at 10:14 p.m. ET.

The chief of space operations told Congress that present policies are restricting the U.S. Space Force’s capabilities to respond to threats on U.S. assets in orbit.

During a congressional hearing Thursday, Gen. Chance Saltzman, a three-time Wash100 Award winner, discussed with lawmakers the importance of establishing a declaratory policy to move fast, especially as adversaries like China rapidly expand their presence in space.

Bureaucracy Impeding US Space Superiority

Saltzman explained to the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission, a bipartisan advisory group, the current process to carry out basic operations such as developing and testing capabilities and training, all of which are done in simulation.

In his written testimony, the space leader pointed out that the U.S. government and the Department of Defense have outdated ways of thinking, leading to restrictive space policies.

He said, “we restrain ourselves from doing what is needful to avoid creating improper perceptions of ‘weaponizing space.’

In reality, space has been weaponized for at least two decades, and our slowness to absorb that reality has held back our progress.”

He also raised concerns about over-classification, which affects information-sharing across the Joint Force and with partners and allies.

Saltzman said the present attitude about information sharing is “need to know” rather than “need to share,” which the official said is a more progressive take.

Online forums based in the United States that rely on First Amendment protections are getting caught up in internet regulations in the UK and Europe, where they now risk being blocked under recent legislation.

Hailed by the British government as the world’s first online "safety" law, the Online Safety Act (OSA) requires online platforms to implement measures to "protect" (censor) people with far-reaching implications for internet services.

Gab, an American social media network, positions itself as a champion of free speech. Gab CEO Andrew Torba said in a March 26 social media post that the UK government has demanded that it submit to “their new censorship regime under the UK Online Safety Act.”

Gab — which has no legal presence in the UK — was informed in a letter from UK regulator Ofcom on March 16 that it falls specifically within the scope of the law and must comply. Gab has refused to comply with the OSA. “We will not comply. We will not pay one cent,” Torba said. Gab’s lawyers said that their client is a US company with no presence outside of the United States. “The most fundamental of America’s laws — the First Amendment to our Constitution — ensures Gab’s right to provide a service that allows anyone, anywhere, to receive and impart political opinions of any kind, free from state interference, on its US-based servers,” they said in a statement last month. Gab also refused to comply with legislation in other countries.

Web forum Kiwifarms said it also received a letter from Ofcom. The platform is now blocking users in the UK because of the legislation. “You are accessing this website from the United Kingdom. This is not a good idea. The letter states the UK asserts authority over any website that has a ’significant number of United Kingdom users’. This ambiguous metric could include any site on the Internet and specifically takes aim at the people using a website instead of the website itself.”

In November 2022, Rumble CEO Chris Pavlovski turned “off France entirely” after the company refused to comply with the country’s demand for the removal of Russian state-media accounts.

The law has already affected dozens of smaller UK websites, from forums for cyclists, hobbyists, and hamster owners, to those supporting divorced fathers. The regulatory pressure and the many rules have caused many of them to shut down, despite some operating for decades.

US lawyer Preston Byrne said he believes that enforcement of the law could set it on a political collision course with the United States. “London should brace for significant political blowback” he told The Epoch Times by email.

Tidmarsh mulled that the UK could also face threats of tariffs. This year, US President Donald Trump issued a memorandum seeking to protect American companies and innovators from what he called “overseas extortion.” The chairman of the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Brendan Carr, appointed to the FCC helm by Trump in January, said that DSA’s approach was “something that is incompatible with both our free speech tradition in America and the commitments that these technology companies have made to a diversity of opinions.”

Police helicopter 'near miss' during drone alert

April 4, 2025

A police helicopter was forced to abandon a mission when the pilot reported coming dangerously close to a drone.

The chopper had been sent to assist at RAF Lakenheath, in Suffolk, following reports of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in the vicinity.

Flight data indicated the aircraft climbed steeply and made a series of sharp turns while over the nearby town of Newmarket in November.

The National Police Air Service (NPAS), which operates the Airbus H135, would not comment as the incident was still under investigation.

However, a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to police revealed the helicopter withdrew "due to a drone coming close to them".

NPAS confirmed that the helicopter, understood to have the registration G-POLJ, had been sent to the area on 22 November following reports of drone sightings.

The US Air Force said a number of unmanned aerial systems had been spotted in the vicinity of RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk, RAF Feltwell in Norfolk and RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.

NPAS has video footage of the incident but would not release it on national security grounds, following a series of FOI requests.

What is known as an Airprox notification was sent following the incident.

These are submitted when a pilot or air traffic personnel identify a near miss in which the safety of the aircraft involved may have been compromised.

'Doing loops'

The near miss incident was detailed in an FOI request to Norfolk and Suffolk Police, made by Stuart Onyeche.

This disclosed a log entry which stated: "NPAS is withdrawing due to a drone coming close to them."

The logs contained 35 notifications related to drone sightings reported to local police between 22 and 27 November.

They contained reports, mostly from members of the public, which described drones making three loops of an undisclosed perimeter and another doing loops around Feltwell.

Sightings were also reported at Bodney Camp, another military installation, and were seen moving in the direction of Sandringham and a nearby Center Parcs.

One log entry also described a man who "grabbed the drone, got back in the car and roared off at speed", although the date when this happened was unclear.

The final entry stated: "Informant said that he has spoken to ex-USAF service men, and he now believes that a UFO/spaceship was captured by the US military during the early 80s."

Mr Onyeche, who said his work was aviation related, told the BBC the incident "raises obvious safety concerns for the public on the ground from the risk of collision above".

He added: "The public are being kept in the dark about what happened, so we are being left to join dots and speculate."

Suffolk Police referred the BBC's inquiries to the Ministry of Defence.

Scepticism

Ian Hudson, a drone commentator and analyst, extracted data from the flight tracking website ADS-B Exchange.

He said it showed G-POLJ taking off from North Weald Airfield, in Essex, at 21:13 GMT on 22 November. It arrived at RAF Lakenheath 23 minutes later before turning southwest towards Newmarket.

The chopper then climbed steeply before making a series of turns. The BBC was able to reproduce his findings.

The flight path "appears to be a search or pursuit over Newmarket", and there were reservations within the drone community about the presence of drones in the skies above the airbases, Mr Hudson said.

"There is scepticism about drone sightings at night as often there are mis-identifications," he added.

Investigations into the sightings were led by the Ministry of Defence Police.

An MOD spokesperson said: "We take threats seriously and maintain robust measures at defence sites."

In February, the i-Paper published an analysis of open source data which indicated three people, linked to Russian military intelligence, had been in the area during and leading up to the sightings.

The BBC has not been able to verify these reports.

Operator arrested for flying drone into Comerica Park during Opening Day of Detroit Tigers game

DETROIT – A person operating a drone was arrested after flying it into Comerica Park during the Detroit Tigers’ Opening Day game.

The incident occurred Friday, April 4, at 1:43 p.m. during gameplay.

The Detroit Police Department said the incident originated from the top floor of the parking structure at Brush Street and East Adams Avenue.

Officials reported that the drone operator was identified quickly and arrested near the scene.

The FBI, along with the Michigan State Police and DPD, is actively investigating.

Maui Fisher Busted For Drone and Narcotics Violations

KEAWAKAPU BEACH, Maui – What started as a drug investigation led to possession charges, but also a fishing violation for 37-year-old Christopher Glavor of Kihei.

On Sunday, an officer from the DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) was contacted by Maui Police dispatch about an anonymous complaint of someone fishing using an unmanned drone.

The responding officer saw Glavor in possession of what appeared to be marijuana. The officer also observed drug paraphernalia in open view, on a table attached to Glavor’s chair.

A glass bong, loose marijuana and in a clear glass jar and in a plastic package, and a yellow wax-like substance were taken as evidence.

The substances in the packages and containers were field tested, and produced positive results for marijuana, hashish, and marijuana concentrate.

Glavor was arrested for Promotion of a Detrimental Drug in the Second Degree and two charges of Promotion of a Harmful Drug in the Fourth Degree.

During his investigation the DOCARE officer spotted a drone lying in the sand. Glavor admitted to using the drone to cast his fishing line.

He was cited for Possession or Use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle On, In, or Near Marine Waters Prohibited.

Glavor was booked, posted $600 bail, and was released from custody. He is scheduled to appear in Wailuku District Court on May 8.

Pilot Reports Drone Near His Wing At 13,000 Feet Over Tekoa

A pilot reported to authorities that a drone was flying near his wing at 13,000 feet over Tekoa late Thursday afternoon.

The Whitman County Sheriffs Office received the report around 6:00. Air traffic control in Seattle heard from a pilot who reported the drone.

Controllers then informed the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office who determined the plane was over Tekoa.

Spokane County Deputies then relayed the information to the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office who were advised of the sighting.

Police use drone to search for fugitive suspect during multiple incidents

Police used this drone camera during a series of incidents in Flintshire. Officers dealt with a medical emergency, a wanted suspect and helped paramedics among other events.

North Wales Police gave the update about their busy day in Holywell yesterday (Friday) on the force's NWP North Flintshire Facebook page - and even posted a photo of the drone.

The wrote: "Holywell residents may have noticed a hive of police activity this afternoon. We were initially in the area assisting with a medical emergency, when we noticed a male who we believe is a suspect in a number of criminal damage offences.

"He got on his toes and so we had a number of officers head over for a search and a drone. During this another incident came in where ambulance required assistance.

"Then 4 more immediate incidents all came in at the same time across the district. While all this was going on two officers called for assistance."

The spokesman added: "It's distressing for officers on scene and for officers who can't head over to help.

I'll be late off as likely will other officers ensuring any paperwork that needs completing is sorted before going home. A chaotic start to the weekend!"

It is unclear whether the suspect in the search involving the drone was caught.

Houthis claim drone strike on 'military target' near Tel Aviv

Yemeni Houthis from the Ansar Allah rebel movement conducted a drone strike on an "Israeli military target" near the city of Tel Aviv, according to the movement’s military spokesman, Yahya Saria.

"The Yemeni armed forces carried out an operation to destroy an Israeli military target in the occupied area of Jaffa (Tel Aviv - TASS) using a drone," the representative of the movement said on the air of the Houthi-owned Al Masirah TV channel, News.Az reports citing TASS.

Earlier the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported intercepting a drone approaching the country's airspace from the east.

According to The Times of Israel, the Israeli military shot down the UAV over the Arava Desert in southern Israel.

Following the escalation of the conflict in Gaza in 2023, the Houthis issued a warning that they would bombard Israeli territory and prevent associated ships from navigating the waters of the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Although Houthi attacks stopped after a ceasefire was imposed in Gaza in mid-January, hostilities resumed in early March when the rebels announced their intention to target Israeli vessels in the Red Sea and subsequently renewed rocket strikes on targets within Israel.

On March 15, US President Donald Trump authorized military action against the Houthis, who control about one-third of Yemen’s territory.

He attributed the decision to Houthi attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. According to the US Central Command, the operation aims to protect American interests and ensure freedom of navigation.

In retaliation, the Ansar Allah movement conducted a series of attacks on the US aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman in the northern Red Sea, utilizing missiles and drones.

There have been no reports of damage to the ship resulting from these strikes.

Russia comments on Krivoy Rog strike

Ukrainian and Western service members were killed in the attack on Friday, the Defense Ministry said

Russia has said that it carried out a missile strike on military personnel in the eastern Ukrainian city of Krivoy Rog on Friday evening.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry,its target was “a meeting place of commanders of military units and Western instructors in one of the restaurants.”

Up to 85 Ukrainian and foreign soldiers and officers were killed, and up to 20 vehicles were damaged, the MOD said.

Ukrainian officials reported that the missile struck a residential area, damaging several apartment blocks. Aleksandr Vilkul, the head of the Krivoy Rog defense council, said that 18 civilians were killed, including nine children, and 56 people were wounded.

Dmitry Lubinets, Ukraine’s top human rights official, denied that there was a military site in the area.

Russia has maintained that it only strikes military targets. Between March 29 and April 4,Moscow conducted seven “group strikes” on command centers, military airfields, weapons factories, and ammunition depots, the MOD said.

The ministry added that Ukraine had carried out =•six attacks on “elements of Russia’s energy infrastructure” over the last 24 hours••, in violation of the moratorium brokered by the US last month.

Ukrainian troops continued to shell civilian targets on Friday, killing at least two people and injuring 14 others, Russian officials said.

World Economic Forum founder and chairman Klaus Schwab is to step down, a spokesperson for the Forum said on Thursday.

Moscow has stated that Kiev is breaking the terms of the ceasefire agreed upon with the US

Russia’s stance regarding the potential peace settlementof the Ukraine conflict will be known in the near future, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has claimed.

During a March 18 phone call, Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to his US counterpart Donald Trump’s suggestion that both sides implement a 30-day halt on attacks on energy facilities. Since then, Moscow has repeatedly accused Kiev of violating the terms of the agreement.

Speaking to journalists on Friday, Rubio reiterated that Trump wants to put an end to the Ukraine conflict. However, “you can’t end a war unless both sides agree,” Rubio stated. “We will know soon enough – in a matter of weeks, not months – whether Russia is serious about peace or not. I hope they are. It would be good for the world if that war ended, but obviously we have to test that proposition,” he said.

Rubio also claimed that theUkrainian side had shown “a willingness to enter, for example, into a complete ceasefire to create space for negotiation.”

FBI chat logs show immediate clampdown on the Hunter Biden story, with a gag order silencing internal confirmation the laptop was real.

The US House Judiciary Committee has released internal chat logs, that show the FBI moved into cover-up mode the very day the New York Post published the Hunter Biden laptop story, on October 14, 2020.

The logs, first reported about by journalists Michael Shellenberger and Catherine Herridge, reveal that the FBI employees were immediately instructed “not to discuss the Biden matter,” while an intelligence analyst who, during a call with Twitter, accidentally confirmed that the story, i.e., the laptop, was real, was placed under a “gag order.”

The reason the analyst, who was with the FBI’s Criminal Investigative Division, was able to so quickly confirm the reporting was based on credible information was the fact the FBI had seized and authenticated Hunter Biden’s laptop several months earlier.

Big Tech platforms – notably Twitter and Facebook – then started censoring the article, branding it falsely “Russian disinformation.” By maintaining the “no comment” policy instead of confirming that the laptop was real and under investigation, the FBI was in effect tacitly promoting the false narrative about foreign interference.

These moves originated from the Foreign Influence Task Force, which was shut down earlier this year for its activities related to censorship through pressure on social platforms.

The laptop scandal was unfolding during a crucial time in the 2020 campaign and represents one of the most egregious publicly known examples of political censorship of free speech and media orchestrated by government agencies.

The chat logs that have now been published reveal that one of the FBI staff involved in the Hunter Biden laptop story suppression was Bradley Benavides.

Only weeks prior, Benavides featured in another controversy: that time in what appeared to be a smear campaign against Senators Ron Johnson and Chuck Grassley, who were allegedly “advancing Russian disinformation.”

At the time, the senators just so happened to be investigating Hunter Biden’s financial connections to foreign governments.

A letter the Judiciary Committee sent Benavides in June 2023, shows that he had by that time gone through the Big Tech-Big Government “revolving door” – and was senior risk manager at Amazon.

A federal program is separately authorized and funded by Congress. If a program is not authorized, or authorized at a specific level, it is not supposed to receive funding. But because of Congressional inaction, apathy, and inattention, these programs regularly receive such funding even though they lack legal authorization.

491 specifically-identified unauthorized programs and federal spending accounts for roughly 8% of the annual federal budget of $6.45 trillion, or $516 billion dollars. The DOGE effort to cut government fraud, waste, and abuse has so far saved taxpayers $140 billion by comparison.

The Congressional Budget Office couldn’t find or estimate the dollar amounts spent by the other 1,000 zombie programs they identified.

According to a recent investigation by RealClearInvestigations, the United States government is quietly funding what experts are calling “zombie programs” — agencies and initiatives that legally expired but are kept alive through backdoor budget tricks and annual appropriations

In 2016, candidate Trump even mentioned this concept of refusing to pay for unauthorized programs as a way to get more funding to the military. The media ‘fact checked’ Trump’s claim as ‘false’ even though it was true, because, they said, Congress doesn’t have to follow the law.

One of the most egregious examples? The Legal Services Corporation (LSC), a taxpayer-funded outfit originally established to provide free legal assistance to low-income Americans. Congress let its authorization expire in 1980, yet the agency is still alive and well in 2025 — operating with 135 employees and a $560 million budget.

Republicans in 2011 tried to make modest cuts to the LSC, and the left-wing mainstream media said it would cause major social problems. Leftist media said it was going to “gut a crucial anti-poverty lifeline.” Left-wing non-profits rallied to protect this subsidy and corporate welfare to the nation’s attorneys.

The LSC has long been accused of funding politically motivated litigation, supporting left-leaning advocacy groups, and diverting taxpayer money into causes far beyond its original mandate. In past decades, LSC grantees have been caught assisting in lawsuits to block welfare reform, challenging voter ID laws, and filing environmental and immigration-related lawsuits aimed at advancing progressive policy goals rather than defending the poor in court. Some grantees have used federal funds to lobby state legislatures, coordinate with activist networks, and even sue landlords and small businesses en masse under dubious legal theories.

45 years after it was supposed to be shut down, the LSC is still spending hundreds of millions with zero legislative oversight.

South Korean Populist President Removed from Office, continuing an international trendline

Commentary

We now have a distinct trendline.  The United States, Brazil, Romania, Hungary, France, and now South Korea have all faced crushing attacks on their societies because of the rise of Populist leaders.  Populism is the mortal danger to Globalism and China.  Globalists and China will work together to ensure a populist leader is defeated, removed, and subject to extensive and crushing lawfare to render them powerless.

At approximately 1030pm Eastern Time on April 3, the South Korean Constitutional Court decided 8-0 for sustaining the impeachment and immediately removing President Yoon from office.  It is looking like up until April 1st, the Justices were leaning to nullify the impeachment until the senior judge changed his mind and the other judges fell into place.  Unclear what changed his mind, but this is one of the differences in the South Korean and American Court systems, there is this atmosphere of conforming to the consensus in South Korea.  President Yoon was from the People Power Party, a relatively recent creation of conservatives and populists who came together to fight the insipid growth of the Korean Democrat Party (KDP).

Since 2017 the KDP has grown in strength and continued to win elections despite what the public sentiment appeared to be.  It started with the May 2017 elections in the wake of the impeachment and removal of a previous President, Park Geun-hye, of the Grand National Party, the pre-existing conservative Party.  There were valid issues about Park, but her circumstances were also leveraged to call for Presidential Elections, which the KDP won after the episode with Park.

The KDP has grown in strength in the National Assembly and a corrupt leftist, Moon Jae-in won the 2017 Presidential election and soon eliminated 100s of Military and Intelligence officials and dismantled the Intelligence Agency’s ability to defend against North Korea and China to consolidate his power and strengthen his ties with China.  The elections in 2017 and 2020 were fraught with fraud issues.  The Korean Election Commission (KEC) and the Association of World Election Bureaus (A-Web) have the USAID Logo on their websites which is now explains much of what the KEC and A-Web were really up to and who was paying them.

Yoon’s removal was a huge and hurtful loss to months of amazing, never before seen mass demonstrations from the Korean populist movement.  With the South Korean Constitutional Court decision to sustain the impeachment of President Yoon it means he is immediately removed from the Presidency and the Presidential Residency of South Korea.

The unanimous outcome of the court was shocking.  In addition, new elections will be conducted within 60 days.

The supporters of the KDP waved Blue, Green, and Antifa Flags (Blue and Green normally reflect Communist leanings).  The very upset Populists waived South Korean and American Flags.  The different flags explain everything

To South Koreans who are anguished: this is what Americans had to undergo since 2020.

Many Americans were upset, were angry, and some felt it was over.

But those who supported Donald J. Trump formed, stormed, and prevailed through four years of a twisting landscape of daily obstacles from the Communists and Deep States, and now President Trump is back, but the fight continues daily.

The lesson learned is to never give up, never surrender.  The South Koreans must be Identify the causes and methods of the fraud and relentlessly expose them despite a corrupt domestic media.

Bill sponsor Rep. Rebekah Stewart, a Lakewood Democrat, argued in Orwellian fashion that such legislation was in the child’s best interest.

“Supporting a child’s gender identity is indeed in the best interest of the child, and that support cannot be used against a loving and supportive parent in a dispute,” Stewart claimed.

“This bill is truly the least that we can do. Frankly, I wish that we didn’t have to bring this bill, but the reality of navigating the world today as a transgender human necessitates it,” she added.

But Republicans were furious that their Democrats would dare claim that referring to children by their proper pronouns would be considered child abuse.

“The idea that misgendering your own child is considered coercive control, which is another word for child abuse, because you want to get your child help instead of affirming their delusions … this is the most disgusting bill I’ve seen so far,” stated GOP State Rep. Jarvis Caldwell, a Republican from Colorado Springs.

The bill now heads to the Colorado State Senate, which Democrats also control. One can assume it will pass in that chamber and then signed into law by far-left Colorado Governor Jared Polis.

GUANGZHOU, China — At his factory in southern China, hat supplier Jeffy Ma is trying to keep up with global demand as well as President Donald Trump’s seismic changes to international trade.

Trump announced on Wednesday a new round of 34% “reciprocal” tariffs on Chinese goods, part of tariffs he imposed on countries around the world over what he says are unequal trade relationships with the United States. China responded on Friday by imposing the same levy of 34% on U.S. imports, escalating the trade war between the world’s two biggest economies.

With the combined U.S. tariff on most Chinese imports now at least 54%, the cost of many everyday goods produced in China — from hats to auto parts to electronics — is set to rise.

While Trump has promised the cost of the new tariffs will be borne by countries such as China, Ma says it is American consumers who will mainly pay the difference in the form of higher prices.

His company, Ace Headwear, sews, embroiders and finishes golf visors, cycling headwear and baseball hats for brands such as Wilson and Fila, as well as for Major League Baseball teams. About 40% of the hats his 350 employees make are sold to the United States.

“For us, the manufacturing profit is very low, so we cannot absorb so much,” Ma told NBC News last week at his factory in the southern Chinese manufacturing hub of Guangzhou. “I think the final result is that the consumer in U.S.A., they will pay.”

The 34% tariffs come on top of earlier tariffs of 10% each that Trump imposed on Chinese goods in February and March. China had announced retaliatory tariffs in response to those as well.

“It’s a mess,” Ma said of the tariffs. “It’s a challenge to all of us.”As the cost of doing business with the U.S. increases, Ma is looking to sell more to China and other markets.

He has also considered building new factories in Southeast Asia, where China has shifted some production in an effort to avoid U.S. tariffs. That may be less appealing, however, now that Trump has slapped tariffs as high as 49% on countries such as Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia, keeping China relatively cost-effective as a manufacturing base.

Even before Trump’s latest tariff announcement, Ma said, relocating to Southeast Asia was far from a perfect solution, given China’s role as the world’s largest manufacturing powerhouse with a skilled labor force and efficient supply chains.

Nor is it realistic for factories like his to move to the U.S., he said, due to the country’s lack of skilled sewing workers, which he said can be difficult to find even in China.

Most of the workers at his company, which was founded in 2014, have a decade or more of experience, Ma said, “so their efficiency is higher.”

Countries such as Vietnam are trying to persuade Trump to roll back his tariffs, and China may also be willing to negotiate, said Tianchen Xu, senior China economist at the Economist Intelligence Unit, a financial forecasting service…

The Ukrainian leader reportedly tried to identify who published the details about the draft minerals deal

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has made ministerial staffers take lie detector tests in an effort tofind out who leaked the draft of the minerals deal with the US, the Financial Times (FT) reported on Saturday, citing government officials.

According to FT, the tests had been administered across several ministries after Zelensky instructed Ukraine’s domestic security service to investigate the leak.

The draft, which was first reported by opposition Ukrainian MP Jaroslav Zheleznyak, outlined the mechanism for the US to manage revenues from oil, gas, and mineral projects.Ukrainian officials told FT that they were “caught off guard”by the scope of the latest American demands.

US President Donald Trump has been trying to persuade Kiev to sign the minerals agreement since February. At the same time, he refused to provide specific security guarantees to Ukraine, arguing that joint business ventures would be enough to deter Russia.

Earlier this week, Trump accused Zelensky of “trying to back out” of the deal and warned that he would face “big problems” if the agreement failed to come through. Speaking to CNN, he reiterated that Ukraine will “never be a member of NATO.”

The attempt to sign a deal in late February was aborted after Zelensky’s heated argument with Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance in the White House.

The US planned to sign the deal during Zelensky’s visit to the White House in late February. “He got to the Oval Office and blew up what should have been the easiest thing to do in the world,” US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in an interview with journalist Tucker Carlson published on Friday.

The EU needs to deprive Hungary of its voting rights within the blocto ensure sanctions on Russia stay in place, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna has said. Budapest has long advocated a diplomatic solution to the Ukraine conflict and called for restrictions against Moscow to be lifted.

Hungary is allegedly “playing on [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s team” and “not on our European team,” Tsahkna told the German newspaper Rheinische Post in an interview published on Saturday. He stated that Budapest could bloc some key decisions related to the bloc’s policy on Russia in the near future, since they require unanimity.

In particular, Hungary could block the next extension of sanctions on Moscow, Estonia’s top diplomat said. “If they block this in June, not only will the sanctions expire, but we would have to hand over the €240 billion to Putin,” Tsahkna said, adding that EU nations would then have to fund Kiev’s war effort with the money “from our taxpayers.”

The foreign minister was referring to Russian sovereign funds frozen by Western nations following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022. An estimated $300 billion worth of assets were frozen in total, with around $213 billion of that held by Euroclear, a Brussels-based clearing house. The frozen funds have already accrued billions in interest, of which Euroclear transferred €1.55 billion ($1.63 billion) to Kiev last July.

According to Tsahkna, Hungary should be stripped of its voting rights to prevent the funds from being unlocked.“Article 7 of the Treaty on European Union provides for the possibility of withdrawing a member state’s voting rights if it endangers the securityof [the EU] and that of the other members. So that’s exactly what Orban is doing,” he claimed, adding that the bloc is “getting closer and closer” to such a step.

He also suggested confiscating the Russian assets, claiming that “there is a legal way to do this” but providing no details. The idea has repeatedly been floated, with some EU members, including France and Spain, reportedly pushing for the move.

Belgium, which hosts Euroclear, has opposed confiscation, calling it “an act of war.” The EU has previously rejected seizing the money as well due to legal and financial stability concerns.

The Kremlin has condemned any seizure of Russian assets as “theft” and warned of serious legal repercussions, hinting at possible retaliatory measures against Western investments in Russia.

The French president could become contact man for the “coalition of the willing” supporting Kiev, the outlet has reported

French President Emmanuel Macron may take the lead in engaging Russia on behalf of Kiev’s European backers in a bid to end the Ukraine conflict, The Telegraph has reported, citing an Elysee Palace source.France’s leader is reportedly not averse to talks, in contrast to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Macron is said to be willing to be a negotiator “when the time is right,” the source told the paper, who added however that time has not yet come. In March, Macron stated that he was “ready to talk” to Russian President Vladimir Putin but only when Kiev and its European backers decide that “the time is right.”

In early March, Macron and Starmer stated that they were ready to lead a “coalition of the willing” consisting of European countries ready to support Kiev with troops and aircraft if it struck a peace deal with Moscow.Ukraine’s backers in Europe now want someone to head their own talks with the Kremlin independently of US President Donald Trump’s peace effort, the Telegraph reported.

Earlier this week, Finnish President Alexander Stubb said he would like to see either London or Paris talking to Moscow. “My personal preference would be that our representatives of the coalition of the willing would be doing that. In other words, France or the United Kingdom,” he said.

Starmer has “no plans” to engage in any talks with Russia, the British newspaper reported.

The Kremlin has denied receiving any requests for talks from the EU or the UK. “There have been no such signals so far,” the Russian president’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, told journalists on Friday.

According to The Telegraph, London and Paris are “happy” to let Washington’s peace efforts play out but want more pressure exerted on Russia.Some of Kiev’s European backers also hope that Trump will “lose patience” with Moscow and ramp up active military support for Ukraine.

Britain and France have emerged as Ukraine’s strongest supporters, while the US stance has shifted under the Trump administration. In March, American and Russian delegations met in Saudi Arabia and agreed to begin normalizing relations.

Moscow and Washington have been trying to negotiate a diplomatic settlement to the Ukraine conflict, achieving limited progress with a partial ceasefire. Russia has accused Ukraine of violating the truce and claimed that British specialists were involved in a recent strike. Moscow has also rejected the idea of NATO-aligned European troops being stationed in the conflict zone, accusing London and Paris of planning a military intervention that could lead to a direct conflict with NATO.

Pregnant Woman Seriously Injured by Rock Thrown Through Tesla Windshield

A pregnant woman sitting in the passenger seat of a Tesla EVwas injured by a two-pound rock that smashed through the car windshield in Vancouver, Canada.

Authorities are now investigating if the rock was intentionally thrown at the vehicle made by Elon Musk’s company.

Police said the Tesla was headed north on Nanaimo Street on the evening of March 30, and was struck by a rock as the electric vehicle passed East 27 Avenue, according to a report by Global News.

The rock reportedly smashed through the car windshield and seriously injured a pregnant woman in the passenger seat before landing on the floor of the Tesla. The victim is expected to make a full recovery.

“We are working to determine whether this was a criminal act, and if someone intentionally targeted this Tesla,” Vancouver Police Department Sergeant Steve Addison said. “This very serious incident could easily have resulted in someone’s death, but for a few inches.”

While investigators examined the Tesla and canvassed the neighborhood, authorities have yet to determine where the rock came from and are encouraging the public to call 604-717-4021 if they have any information.

Police specified they would like to hear from anyone who either saw the incident or may have footage taken on Nanaimo Street, between East 29th and East 22nd March 30, between 8:40 and 9:00 p.m.

A staggering 130 additional officers, meanwhile, have been deployed to various “Tesla Takedown” events over the weekend in Vancouver, where they have been tasked with keeping the peace.

This comes as Tesla owners and facilities have been targeted by vandals and arsonists across the United States since New Year’s Day, in apparent response to Musk’s support for and involvement with President Donald Trump’s administration.

In Vancouver, police reportedly said they have been investigating atotal of 28 Tesla-related incidents since January 20that appear to be politically motivated.

Nine of those incidents have involved private Tesla owners, with the remaining 19 occurring at Musk’s dealerships, and at electric vehicle charging stations.

The 19 incidents have involved “hateful words and symbols spray-painted on buildings,” and “eggs thrown at cars, and smashed windshields,” Global News noted.

Meanwhile, the nine incidents involving private Tesla owners have included rocks and liquid being thrown at vehicles, car wipers having been damaged, and racist symbols scrawled on vehicles.

By comparison, there were no incidents involving Tesla attacks reported in 2024, police noted.

Ex-lawmaker George Santos faces 7-year prison sentence for federal fraud, identity theft

Disgraced former Rep. George Santos could face more than seven years in prison if New York prosecutors get their way.

Santos, 36, who became just the sixth House member to be expelled from the chamber and the first Republican, pleaded guilty to federal fraud and identity theft charges in August as part of a plea deal after having been indicted on felony charges.

The former lawmaker stole from political donors, used campaign contributions to pay for personal expenses, lied to Congress about his wealth and collected unemployment benefits while actually working.

"No matter how hard the DOJ comes for me, they are mad because they will NEVER break my spirit," Santos posted on X Friday in the wake of a court filing by the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York.

Santos has already agreed to serve a minimum of two years in prison and was expected to be sentenced in February but asked the court to postpone sentencing until he can make enough money from his podcast to pay the nearly $600,000 he owes in restitution and forfeiture.

Prosecutors alleged he had raked in around $800,000 from appearances on the Cameo app, with previous reports suggesting he was charging $350 a pop for videos featuring his drag alter ego Kitara Ravache. Santos previously denied ever dressing as a drag queen or associating with drag queens.

Prosecutors argued in the filing Friday that Santos warrants a significant sentence because his "unparalleled crimes" had "made a mockery" of the country’s election system.

"From his creation of a wholly fictitious biography to his callous theft of money from elderly and impaired donors, Santos’s unrestrained greed and voracious appetite for fame enabled him to exploit the very system by which we select our representatives," the office wrote.

They wrote that he had been unrepentant for years and blasted investigations into his crimes as a "witch hunt."

They also said his claims of remorse after pleading guilty "ring hollow" and suggested he has a "high likelihood of reoffending" given he has not forfeited any of his ill-gotten gains or repaid any of his victims.

The lawyers maintain such a sentence is in line with those handed to former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and other political figures facing similar financial crimes.

Santos' legal team asked for a two-year sentence in a Friday court filing. His lawyer, Andrew Mancilla, said prosecutors were selling a false narrative to the court.

"The government wants headlines, not justice. This vindictive 87-month demand ignores sentencing norms for similar cases," Mancilla said.

The freshman lawmaker was expelled a year into his first term in the House in the wake of a damning House Ethics Committee report that found he misused campaign funds on luxury items and OnlyFans, among other things. He had not been convicted of a crime at the time.

During his campaign, Santos claimed that he attended New York University, that he had worked at Goldman Sachs and Citigroup, and that his grandparents had fled the Nazis during World War Two. None of those claims were true.

Santos was once touted as a rising political star after he flipped the suburban district that covers the affluent North Shore of Long Island and a slice of the New York City borough of Queens in 2022.

Last year he failed in an attempt to relaunch his political career by running as an Independent in a neighboring district to re-enter the House.

New court decision in a disputed North Carolina race means 65,000 votes are a step closer to be being thrown out

The fresh ruling could tip the results of a race for North Carolina state Supreme Court, which is still caught up in legal battles months after Election Day 2024.

A three-judge panel of the North Carolina Court of Appeals ruled Friday that more than 65,000 votes cast in the contested race for the state Supreme Court in 2024 must be recounted and verified — a win for the Republican candidate in the razor-thin, disputed contest and a decision that could potentially tip the election results in his favor.

In the ruling, the Republican majority involved in the decision ordered that a group of more than 65,000 voters, whose eligibility was challenged by Republican Supreme Court candidate Jefferson Griffin and his lawyers, now have 15 business days to provide state elections officials with the necessary proof of identity that would verify their votes. The court ruled that any voters who don’t respond will not have their votes counted in the race between Griffin and Democrat Allison Riggs, which is still caught in legal battling five months after Election Day.

The arduous task of verifying those voter identities will fall on the North Carolina State Board of Elections. And the decision sets up an appeal to North Carolina's highest court, the state Supreme Court — the body that the winner of this election will join.

“The inclusion of even one unlawful ballot in a vote total dilutes the lawful votes and ‘effectively disenfranchises’ lawful voters,” the Republican majority on the three-person panel wrote in its opinion. “Post-election protests protect against this risk of vote dilution by enabling candidates and voters to rigorously investigate the election process, identify and challenge unlawful ballots, and ensure those ballots are not counted.”

The one Democratic judge involved in the state Court of Appeals' decision said the majority’s ruling amounted to “changing the rules by which these lawful voters took part in our electoral process after the election to discard their otherwise valid votes” and called the majority's ruling an “an attempt to alter the outcome of only one race among many on the ballot is directly counter to law, equity, and the Constitution.”

The latest decision overturns a ruling by a lower state court from February that had effectively dismissed the case.

In a statement, Riggs said her campaign would appeal the ruling. Doing so is all but certain to put the case before the North Carolina state Supreme Court — the same bench whose seat is at stake in the case. Republicans currently have a 5-2 majority on that court.

“We will be promptly appealing this deeply misinformed decision that threatens to disenfranchise more than 65,000 lawful voters and sets a dangerous precedent, allowing disappointed politicians to thwart the will of the people,” Riggs said in an emailed statement. “North Carolinians elected me to keep my seat and I swore an oath to the constitution and the rule of law — so I will continue to stand up for the rights of voters in this state and stand in the way of those who would take power from the people.”

In a statement, Griffin spokesperson Paul Shumaker said, "We are pleased" with the ruling, calling it "a win for the citizens of North Carolina."

Griffin himself sits on the Court of Appeals but recused himself from the case.

Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin said in a statement that "this partisan decision has no legal basis and is an all-out assault on our democracy and the basic premise that voters decide who wins their elections."

The decision in the battleground state race is the latest chapter in a running saga since the November election.

Griffin and state Republicans have repeatedly claimed that the 65,000 votes in question should be invalidated because they were fraudulently cast by ineligible voters. Litigation over whether those votes should be counted has been stuck in both federal and state courts since the election.

A series of legal developments and rulings earlier this year put the decision in the hands of the state court system, though Riggs' campaign hasn't ruled out legal action that would seek to put the matter back before federal judges.

Riggs, the incumbent Democratic state Supreme Court judge who was appointed to the bench in 2023, was narrowly ahead of Griffin after Election Day, triggering a series of recounts.

A full machine recount, as well as a partial hand recount of the race, both showed Riggs leading Griffin by 734 votes. More than 5.5 million ballots were cast in the race, which the NBC News Decision Desk did not call, amid the recounts and legal cases. Even small changes to the vote count in the race could affect the outcome.

Following the original ballot count after Election Day, Griffin’s team filed hundreds of legal challenges across all of North Carolina’s 100 counties, alleging that more than 65,000 people voted illegally.

Many of the allegations centered around people who Griffin’s lawyers claimed didn’t have a driver’s license number or Social Security number on file in their voter registration records. Their protests were also related to overseas voters who haven’t lived in North Carolina and overseas voters who failed to provide photo identification with their ballots.

In its ruling Friday, the Republican majority on the Court of Appeals instructed the State Board of Elections “to immediately direct the county boards to expeditiously identify the military and overseas voters challenged under this protest and notify said voters of their failure to abide by the photo ID requirement or equivalent, to allow said voters fifteen (15) business days from the mailing of the notice to cure the defect, and upon verification, to include in the count of this challenged election the votes of those voters who timely cure their failure to abide by the photo ID requirement and to omit from the final count the votes of those voters who fail to timely cure their deficiencies."

In their ruling, the two Republicans said that overseas voters who have never lived in North Carolina should not have their ballots counted.

Minnesota food bank CEO steps down as legislators question her $721K salary

Second Harvest Heartland defended its executive compensation and financial stewardship, but some legislators are concerned by the "out of control" salaries at nonprofits requesting public dollars.

Minnesota’s hunger crisis is growing—and apparently so is the appetite for big executive pay at one of the state’s top food nonprofits.

Allison O’Toole, CEO of Second Harvest Heartland, earned $721,000 in total compensation in 2022—even as the nonprofit has lobbied for taxpayer funding and warned of rising hunger across Minnesota, where 26% of households with children are food insecure, according to its own research.

Now, as O’Toole steps down after six years at the helm, lawmakers are raising questions.

Concerns first raised during legislative hearing

Rep. Pam Altendorf, R-Red Wing, told Alpha News that O’Toole’s salary issue first surfaced during a recent “food day” at the Capitol, when food shelf representatives, including O’Toole, testified before the House Children and Families Committee.

“Rep. Bjorn Olson pulled the 990 [tax form] and shared Allison O’Toole’s salary with our committee members right before she testified,” Altendorf said. “That’s when the questions started.”

Rep. Marion Rarick, R-Maple Lake, later raised the issue during a March 17 House committee hearing where a DFL lawmaker questioned why a GOP bill was reducing funding for Second Harvest Heartland in a proposed agriculture budget.

“It looks like the base funding for Second Harvest Heartland is $3.4 million and you reduce it by $900,000 in both the first biennium and the tails,” said Rep. Zack Stephenson, DFL-Coon Rapids.

But Rarick said she thinks the organization “can handle it.”

“They do have a $260 million, that’s their gross revenue,” she said during the hearing. “What’s even more interesting, I think, is that their CEO, their top person, makes $721,000. Yeah, $721,000 is the top person … and they have 10 people that make more than the governor, which is more than $150,000. So that’s well over $2.6 million in their highest-paid people.”

About a week after the salary figures were brought up at the committee hearing, Second Harvest announced O’Toole’s resignation.

Altendorf said days later, Second Harvest lobbyists pulled both her and Rarick off the House floor for a private hallway meeting. At the time, Altendorf’s tweet highlighting O’Toole’s salary had received more than 65,000 views.

“I reassured them that no one questions the need for food banks in Minnesota,” Altendorf said. “But now that this has been exposed, everyone is questioning why an organization that claims to be a nonprofit is paying its CEO nearly a million per year. This is disgusting and incomprehensible to the average person who’s living paycheck to paycheck.”

Millions in revenue, taxpayer funds

Records show Second Harvest brought in roughly $260 million in total revenue in 2022—with over $6 million coming from government grants, according to a report in the American Experiment.

And it’s not just O’Toole earning well into the six figures at the food shelf.

Several executives at Second Harvest earn over $300,000 annually, with at least seven staffers making between $140,000 to $280,000 per year, according to the 2022 tax records.

Despite the high salaries, Second Harvest Heartland has maintained a strong presence at the Capitol this session, requesting public funding to address what it calls record-breaking demand for food assistance.

Altendorf also pointed to what she sees as a deeper issue. She says the nonprofit hired a “voter engagement coordinator” in 2024 to conduct get-out-the-vote efforts—something she calls “a huge conflict of interest” for an organization receiving taxpayer dollars.

“The public is waking up to the money funneling system happening within the Minnesota state government,” Altendorf said. “And I’m hearing loud and clear—taxpayers have had enough.”

O’Toole, who previously led MNsure during its rollout and served as state director for U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, was hired by Second Harvest in 2019, according to reports.

The organization’s Chief Operating Officer, Sarah Moberg, will serve as the interim CEO while a national search is conducted for O’Toole’s replacement. Records show Moberg’s annual salary is listed as roughly $370,000.

Second Harvest defends pay, says public funding doesn’t cover salaries

In a statement to Alpha News, Second Harvest Heartland defended its executive compensation and financial stewardship, stressing that none of its state funding goes toward administrative costs or staff salaries.

“Second Harvest Heartland is independently audited each year. Our latest report confirms that 92.5 cents of every dollar we spend goes toward food and hunger relief programming, with only 3.6% of our budget dedicated to general and administrative expense – which includes compensation,” stated communications director Mike Stephenson.

“Last year, government contracts made up roughly 2% of our $315 million annual budget, with $1.7 million coming from the state of Minnesota, all of which was designated for direct food spending,” he added.

The organization also pointed to its size and scope—distributing more than 167 million pounds of food last year across a network of more than 1,000 partners—as justification for offering competitive wages to attract and retain talent in the fight against hunger.

Stephenson added that O’Toole’s departure had been part of a planned leadership transition and was not in response to recent criticism.
