Musk slams Zelensky for rejecting ceasefire
The US-based billionaire has accused the Ukrainian leader of letting “men die in trenches” instead of seeking a peace deal
Tech billionaire Elon Musk has lashed out at Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky in a series of X posts, accusing him of prolonging the conflict with Russia by refusing to negotiate.
Musk’s comments follow a tense White House meeting on Friday between Zelensky, US President Donald Trump, and Vice President J.D. Vance. The meeting ended abruptly without a planned minerals agreement.
During a heated exchange, Zelensky resisted Trump’s demand to negotiate with Moscow, leading Trump to accuse him of ingratitude, “gambling with World War III,” and lacking the willingness to end the conflict.
After Zelensky’s “fiasco” in Washington, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called an emergency summit in London on Sunday to discuss Western support for Ukraine. Some European leaders raised the possibility of sending ground troops.
Early Sunday, Musk reposted a statement made by Balazs Orban, political director of HungarianPrime Minister Viktor Orban, calling for “direct negotiations with Russia” and an “immediate ceasefire and peace.” He then re-shared his 2022 peace proposal, suggesting referendums in Russian-controlled territories, the recognition of Crimea as Russian, and Ukraine’s neutrality.
The Donetsk People's Republic, Lugansk People's Republic, Kherson Region and Zaporozhye Region—formerly part of Ukraine—became federal subjects of Russia after referendums in 2022. Crimea and Sevastopol had previously voted to join the country in 2014.However, Kiev continues to assert sovereignty over these territories.
“What I said over 2 years ago was that Ukraine should seek peace or suffer severe loss of life for no gains.The latter was Zelensky’s choice. Now, he wants to do that again. This is cruel and inhumane,” Musk wrote in a pinned post.
Musk followed up with a meme of a tram running over people, with Zelensky at the control lever. Another post showed ablood-stained chessboard next to a dining table, captioned: “The reality of war.”
He later reposted the image, adding: “The EU leaders and Zelensky having fancy dinners while men die in trenches.How many parents will never see their son again?”
Musk’s remarks come as Zelensky demands more funding from Western backers while resisting talks with Moscow. Reports indicateWashington is unwilling to approve further aid unless Ukraine agrees to negotiations.
During the summit, Starmer urged the EU and other sponsors to take a leading role in supporting Kiev. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau backed the idea, stating that “everything’s on the table.” French President Emmanuel Macron said deployment would only be possible “when the peace is signed.”
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has expressed strong opposition to the potential deployment of Western peacekeeping forces.He emphasized that NATO expansion towards Russia’s borders is perceived as a threat, and deploying the bloc’s troops in Ukraine,even under a different guise, does not alter this perception.

The legislation was included in the Fiscal Year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which passed by a bipartisan vote of 87-13.
“NATO has held strong in response to Putin’s war in Ukraine and rising challenges around the world,” said Kaine. “The Senate’s vote today to pass my bipartisan bill to prevent any U.S. President from unilaterally withdrawing from NATO reaffirms U.S. support for this crucial alliance that is foundational for our national security. “The Senate should maintain oversight on whether or not our nation withdraws from NATO. We must ensure we are protecting our national interests and protecting the security of our democratic allies,” said Rubio.
Kaine and Rubio successfully fought to include their bipartisan bill as an amendment to the Fiscal Year 2024 NDAA. Specifically, the amendment would require the advice and consent of the Senate or an Act of Congress before suspending, terminating, or withdrawing U.S. membership in NATO. If any U.S. President attempts to leave NATO without Senate approval or an Act of Congress, the amendment prohibits any funding from being used to do so.

A plan developed by France and Britain to end the Ukraine conflictinvolves a month-long ceasefirefollowed by the deployment of Western European peacekeepers to Ukraine, French President Emmanuel Macron has said.
Kiev’s backers held an emergency summit in London on Sunday, in response to Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky’s disastrous trip to Washington last week. Zelensky’s visit to the White House was abruptly cut short on Friday after his meeting with US President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance devolved into a shouting match in front of the media.
Macron told Le Figaro newspaper on Sunday thathe does not believe in any peace deal that could be achieved as a result of talks between the US and Russia, claiming that Russian President Vladimir Putin would seek to humiliate Ukraine, including by demilitarizing it.
According to the French president, Paris and London have developed their own alternative plan to stop the fighting. “We want peace, but we do not want it at any cost,without guarantees,” he explained.
The French-UK plan envisages a temporary, month-long “truce in the air, on the seas, and on energy infrastructure,” Macron said.
A contingent of Western European peacekeepers, led by France and the UK, would be deployed to Ukraine at a later stage when the situation on the ground is safe for them, he added.
“There will be no European troops on Ukrainian soil in the coming weeks. The question is how can we use this time to try to get a truce accessible, with negotiations that will take several weeks, and then, when the peace is signed, a deployment,” Macron stated.
Following the gathering in London, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the UK and France are ready to lead a “coalition of the willing” to provide military support to Ukraine, including the deployment of troops and aircraft, after a peace deal with Russia has been reached.
Moscow has repeatedly ruled out a temporary ceasefire with Kiev, insisting on a permanent, legally binding peace dealthat addresses the root causes of the conflict.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov earlier said that the idea of deployingWestern European peacekeepers to Ukraine is meant to “further fuel the conflict and stop any attempts to cool it down.” Moscow has said itwill view any foreign troopsthat arrive in Ukrainewithout a UN mandate as legitimate targets.
President Putin stated last week that Moscow does not object to Western Europe’s participation in the peace process, but stressed that “no one can demand anything from Russia here.”

A car has reportedly driven into a crowd of people in the western German city of Mannheim, causing casualties, local media reported today.
A black car drove at high speed into people, travelling from the centrally located Paradeplatz square towards the city's landmark water tower, the Mannheim24 news website reported, adding that several people were severely injured.
At least one person was killed during the incident, DW reported this afternoon, citing local media.
One person was also seen lying under a tarpaulin on site, according to a reporter for the Deutsche Presse-Agentur agency. It was unclear whether they had been injured or killed.
Several people were seen lying on the ground in the aftermath, with two people apparently being resuscitated, an eye witness told Reuters.
Another witness told Welt that 'all hell broke loose', without further detail.
The incident occurred as crowds gathered in cities across regions including Germany's Rhineland for parades to mark the carnival season.
Police were on high alert for this year's carnival parades after social media accounts connected to ISIS called for attacks on the events in Cologne and Nuremberg.

Dozens of Russian civilians returned by Ukraine
Kiev has repatriated 33 individuals from occupied parts of Kursk Region, according to Moscow’s human rights commissioner
Kiev has handed over 33 civilians from Ukrainian-controlled parts of Russia’s Kursk Region, Moscow’s human rights commissioner Tatyana Moskalkova has announced. Most of the repatriated citizens are elderly, the official noted.
According to Moskalkova, who welcomed the individuals as they crossed into Belarus,the group includes four children between 1 and 10 years of age. Nine of the civilians need urgent medical assistance, including several wheelchair-bound individuals, the official revealed.
On Tuesday, the repatriated civilians are expected to arrive in the city of Kursk, where they will be reunited with their families and receive all the necessary medical aid.

Magnitude 4.5 earthquake shakes Washington hours after quake rocks Los Angeles area
This earthquake struck after the Los Angeles area was rattled by a magnitude 3.9 earthquake on Sunday night. That earthquake rattled the Hollywood area after the Oscarsceremony had ended and celebrations were getting underway.
ORCAS, Wash. - Hundreds of residents in Washington state reported feeling an earthquake early Monday morning, hours after another earthquake struck about 1,200 miles to the south in the Los Angeles area.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck about 6 miles east of Orcas, Washington, just after 5 a.m. local time.
Soon after the quake rumbled across the Pacific Northwest, hundreds of people across the region, as well as into portions of Canada, reported feeling the shaking.
According to the NWS National Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska, there is no threat of a tsunami from this earthquake.
So far, there are no reports of damage or injuries.
