Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefit theft has become a pervasive issue in several states, with some of the most vulnerable families being left without vital food benefits.
Why It Matters
Some 40 million Americans receive SNAP benefits, which are loaded onto electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards that can be used at approved retailers and select online stores. But they are vulnerable to fraud tactics as cards can be skimmed or cloned, something several states are trying to combat.
However, the problem is getting worse: Fraudulent SNAP transactions increased by 55 percent between the final quarter of fiscal year 2024 and the first quarter of fiscal year 2025, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service.

A federal appeals court on Tuesday appeared doubtful of President Donald Trump’s attempt to reinstate an anti-racketeering lawsuit that alleged a broad conspiracy by Hillary Rodham Clinton, former FBI Director James Comey, and others to link his 2016 presidential campaign to Russia.
The three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit also heard arguments on whether nearly $1 million in sanctions imposed against Trump and his former attorney Alina Habba should stand.
Newsweek contacted Trump's legal team for comment via email outside of normal office hours on Wednesday.

Reid Hoffman on Friday responded to President Trump’s order to launch an investigation against him and other Democrats in relation to their connection with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
“The call for an investigation is an obvious ploy to avoid releasing the files. Simply release all the files, and expose the people who had both deep and ongoing relationships with Epstein,” Hoffman, the co-founder of LinkedIn, wrote in a post on X.
In a follow-up post, he pledged to advocate for the release of all Epstein files to gain justice for the victims of his sex-trafficking ring and “promote the values of truth our great country was founded on.”
“I want this complete release because it will show that the calls for baseless investigations of me are nothing more than political persecution and slander,” Hoffman wrote late on Friday.
“I was never a client of Epstein’s and never had any engagement with him other than fundraising for MIT,” he continued.

Billionaire Reid Hoffman visited disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein's private Caribbean Island after he was convicted of sex crimes – asking the pedophile billionaire to help raise funds for MIT.
The LinkedIn co-founder and Democrat mega-donor, 55, went to Little St. James – which has been dubbed 'pedophile island' – on one occasion, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Epstein allegedly used the $125 million estate to abuse underage girls alongside Ghislaine Maxwell and was convicted of soliciting a child for sex in 2008.
Hoffman traveled to the island with Joi Ito, the then-MIT Media Lab director, who had asked Hoffman and Epstein to help raise funds for MIT.
Documents also reveal that director Woody Allen attended dozens of dinners with his wife at Epstein's Manhattan townhouse, while the former president of Harvard University, Lawrence Summers, asked the late pervert for help raising cash.
In an email to The Wall Street Journal, Ito confirmed Hoffman attended the island, with other documents revealing that he planned to stay at Epstein's notorious townhouse in Manhattan in 2014, although this did not happen.
Ito said in an email: 'Reid attended a few fundraising events at my request, including one trip to Little St. James, after I confirmed to Reid that Mr. Epstein had been an approved donor target for MIT in accordance with university rules and regulations.'
Both Ito and Hoffman had been planning to revisit the island in November 2014, before traveling with Epstein from Palm Beach, to the island and then to Boston.
Epstein did own a Florida mansion, and although the purpose for the trip has not been confirmed, he is accused of assaulting underage girls and young women at the property.
Hoffman then apologized for meeting with the convicted sex offender, telling the Journal: 'While I relied on MIT's endorsement, ultimately I made the mistake, and I am sorry for my personal misjudgment,'
He also reportedly planned to stay the night in Epstein's townhouse in December 2014, before planning to attend a 'breakfast party' with Epstein and Bill Gates.
Hoffman, who is worth $2billion, says his last interaction with Epstein was in 2015, when he invited Epstein to a dinner in Palo Alto.
The billionaire added: 'It gnaws me that, by lending my association, I helped his reputation, and thus delayed justice for his survivors.'

According to the Journal the Oscar-winning movie director Woody Allen, attended dozens of dinners with his wife, Soon-Yi Previn, at Epstein's mansion and invited him to film screenings.
They reportedly got together nearly every month in 2014 and 2015, and also visited the studio of artist Jeff Koons in 2013, and to Sotheby's auction house in 2017.
A spokesman for Allen and his wife, Soon-Yi, said: 'Woody and Soon-Yi lived in the same neighborhood as Epstein and were frequently invited to dinner parties at his townhouse.
The pair were said to have been such regulars that Epstein's staff knew to prepare a special flourless chocolate cake for Allen.
Soon-Yi is the adopted daughter of Allen's movie star former wife Mia Farrow. She and Allen wed in Venice in late 1997, when Allen was 61, and she was 26.
Allen was accused of molesting his adoptive daughter Dylan Farrow, but denied that claim, and no criminal charges were ever brought against him.

Alnitak, Alnilam, and Mintaka are the bright bluish stars from east to west (upper right to lower left) along the diagonal in this cosmic vista. Otherwise known as the Belt of Orion, these three blue supergiant stars are hotter and much more massive than the Sun. They lie from 700 to 2,000 light-years away, born of Orion's well-studied interstellar clouds. In fact, clouds of gas and dust adrift in this region have some surprisingly familiar shapes, including the dark Horsehead Nebula and Flame Nebula near Alnitak at the upper right. The famous Orion Nebula itself is off the right edge of this colorful starfield. The telescopic frame spans almost 4 degrees on the sky.

Last night at 4pm EST, something unprecedented happened. Nvidia stock rallied 5% on earnings, then crashed into negative territory within 18 hours. Wall Street algorithms detected what humans couldn’t: the numbers don’t add up.
Here’s what they found.
Nvidia reported $33.4 billion in unpaid bills, up 89% in one year. Customers who bought chips haven’t paid for them yet. The average wait time for payment stretched from 46 days to 53 days. That extra week represents $10.4 billion that may never arrive.
Meanwhile, Nvidia stockpiled $19.8 billion in unsold chips, up 32% in three months. But management claims demand is insane and supply is constrained. Both cannot be true. Either customers aren’t buying or they’re buying without cash.
The cash flow tells the real story. Nvidia generated $14.5 billion in actual cash but reported $19.3 billion in profit. The gap is $4.8 billion. Healthy chip companies like TSMC and AMD convert over 95% of profits to cash. Nvidia converts 75%. That’s distress level.
Here’s where it gets criminal.
Nvidia gave $2 billion to xAI. xAI borrowed $12.5 billion to buy Nvidia chips. Microsoft gave OpenAI $13 billion. OpenAI committed $50 billion to buy Microsoft cloud. Microsoft ordered $100 billion in Nvidia chips for that cloud. Oracle gave OpenAI $300 billion in cloud credits. OpenAI ordered Nvidia chips for Oracle data centers.
The same dollars circle through different companies and get counted as revenue multiple times. Nvidia books sales, but nobody actually pays. The bills age. The inventory piles up. The cash never comes.
AI company CEOs admitted it themselves last week. Airbnb’s CEO called it vibe revenue. OpenAI burns $9.3 billion per year but makes $3.7 billion. That’s a $5.6 billion annual loss. The $157 billion valuation requires $3.1 trillion in future profits that MIT research shows 95% of AI projects will never generate.
Peter Thiel sold $100 million in Nvidia on November 9. SoftBank dumped $5.8 billion on November 11. Michael Burry bought put options betting Nvidia crashes to $140 by March 2026.
Bitcoin, which tracks AI speculation, dropped from $126,000 in October to $89,567 today. That’s a 29% crash. AI startups hold $26.8 billion in Bitcoin as collateral for loans. When Nvidia falls another 40%, those loans default, forcing $23 billion in Bitcoin sales, crashing crypto to $52,000.
The timeline is now certain. February 2026, Nvidia reports fourth quarter and reveals how many bills aged past 60 days. March 2026, credit agencies downgrade. April 2026, the first restatement. The fraud that took 18 months to build unwinds in 90 days.
Fair value for Nvidia: $71 per share. Current price: $186. The math is simple.
This is the fastest moving financial fraud in history because algorithms detected it in real time. Human investors are 90 days behind.

View Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS Through NASA’s Multiple Lenses

NASA is in the midst of an unprecedented solar system-wide observation campaign, turning its spacecraft and space telescopes to follow comet 3I/ATLAS, the third known interstellar object to pass through our solar system.
Twelve NASA assets have captured and processed imagery of the comet since it was first discovered on July 1, and several others will have opportunities to capture more images as the comet continues to pass through our solar system.
By observing the comet from so many locations, NASA has an opportunity to learn about the ways that 3I/ATLAS differs from our solar system’s home-grown comets and give scientists a new window into how the compositions of other systems may differ from our own.
Observations from Mars
The closest imagery of the comet was taken by NASA’s spacecraft at Mars. Earlier this fall, 3I/ATLAS passed by Mars from a distance of 19 million miles, where it was observed by three NASA spacecraft.
The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) captured one of the closest images of the comet, while the MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN) orbiter obtained ultraviolet images that will help scientists understand the comet’s make-up.
Meanwhile, the Perseverance rover grabbed a faint glimpse from the surface of Mars.
Sun watchers’ view
Some of NASA’s heliophysics missions have the unique ability to observe areas of the sky near the Sun, which allowed them to track comet 3I/ATLAS as it passed behind our Sun as seen from Earth, making observations with ground-based telescopes impossible.
NASA’s STEREO (Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory) captured images from Sept. 11 to Oct. 2, and the ESA (European Space Agency) and NASA mission SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) observed the comet from Oct. 15 to 26.
Images from NASA’s PUNCH (Polarimeter to Unify the Corona and Heliosphere) mission, which launched earlier this year, reveal the comet’s tail during observations from Sept. 20 to Oct. 3.
Despite previously observing and discovering thousands of comets, this is the first time NASA’s heliophysics missions have purposefully observed an object originating in another solar system.
Asteroid explorers
NASA’s Psyche and Lucy spacecraft, currently on their respective outbound journeys to study various asteroid targets throughout the solar system, were able to observe 3I/ATLAS en route.
On Sept. 8 and 9, Psyche acquired four observations of the comet over eight hours from a distance of 33 million miles. These images will help scientists refine the comet’s trajectory.
On Sept. 16, Lucy took a series of images from 240 million miles away. Stacking these images together provides detail on the comet’s coma and tail.
The NASA-funded ATLAS (Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System) telescope in Chile discovered 3I/ATLAS on July 1.
Later that month it was viewed by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. In August, both NASA’s James Webb Telescope and SPHEREx (Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer) captured imagery.
Comet 3I/ATLAS will fly closest to Earth about Friday, Dec. 19, at 170 million miles, which is almost twice the distance between the Earth and Sun.
NASA spacecraft will continue to observe the comet as it makes its journey through the solar system, passing the orbit of Jupiter in spring 2026.
