Can only speculate, but I assume it was partially to shield Trump for being blamed for the pretty bad economic knock-on effects of the plandemic (i.e., inflation and muh supply chain issues), among other things. Frankly, Trump deserves some of the blame for this (though not all - Fed/Treasury controls the printers).

If you subscribe to the Law of War / Devolution theory, it basically gave Trump an extra term, as Biden was "officially" the president, but Mil was treating his administration as an occupying force and had loyalty to Trump. I kind of buy this, but at the same time, the US MIL has not given me much hopium that they were loyal to Trump... I suppose they couldn't make it "too obvious", though.

Good question though, anon. Not sure anyone has a fully air-tight theory at this point.

hA Florida jury on Friday found that CNN defamed a U.S. Navy veteran in a 2021 story about people paid to rescue endangered Afghans following the Taliban takeover of that country.

It was an unusual ruling against a media outlet in a defamation case. Libel laws are generally protective of news organizations, and plaintiffs must meet a high standard to prove defamation.

The jury in Panama City, Florida, deliberated for more than eight hours starting Thursday before ruling in favor of Zachary Young, who blamed CNN for destroying his business by showing his face onscreen in a story about a "black market" of smuggling out desperate Afghans for high fees.

The jury awarded Young $5 million in compensatory damages. An undisclosed settlement was reached later Friday regarding punitive damages, according to the judge overseeing the case. Details of that settlement were not immediately available.

Young had argued that his business targeted sponsors who could afford to pay for Afghans to get out, not individual Afghans charged as much as $10,000 for the service. While CNN said it was wrong to use the phrase "black market," it contended that its reporting on Young was accurate.

CNN told The Associated Press that it would have no comment on the verdict. But it sent a statement to the website Mediaite saying: "We remain proud of our journalists and are 100% committed to strong, fearless and fair-minded reporting at CNN, though we will of course take what useful lessons we can from this case."

At a trial located in a conservative part of the country, Young's lawyers urged jurors to send a message to the media. Questions submitted by jurors during the trial telegraphed some hostility, with one wondering whether CNN had treated the plaintiff as guilty until proven innocent.

Private messages also became part of the trial, with plaintiffs showing internal messages where CNN's reporter, Alex Marquardt, said some profane and unflattering things about Young. Marquardt testified in the trial that his story "was not a hit piece."

Marquardt's story first aired on Nov. 11, 2021, during Jake Tapper's CNN broadcast, and subsequent printed stories were used on the network's website.

Defamation trials are actually rare in the United States, in part because the strong constitutional protections for the press make proving libel difficult. From the media's standpoint, taking a case to a judge or jury is a risk many executives don't want to take.

Rather than defend statements that George Stephanopoulos made about Trump last spring, ABC News last month agreed to make the former president's libel lawsuit go away by paying him $15 million toward his presidential library. In the end, ABC parent Walt Disney Co. concluded an ongoing fight against Trump wasn't worth it, win or lose.

In another case, Fox News agreed to pay Dominion Voting Systems $787 million on the day the trial was due to start in 2023 to settle the company's claims of inaccurate reporting in the wake of the 2020 presidential election.

With the verdict in, lawyers were hearing testimony during the punitive damage phase of the trial about the overall financial health of CNN.

What health experts believe could happen with bird flu in 2025The CDC said the risk of bird flu to the general public is low, but public health experts say they are worried the virus could mutate and become more transmissible.

Moderna has been awarded approximately $590 million from the federal government to help speed up the development of an mRNA-based bird flu vaccine, alongside other influenza vaccines, health officials announced Friday.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) said in a press release that the funding will allow the pharmaceutical company to accelerate the development of an H5N1 mRNA influenza vaccine "that is well matched to strains currently circulating in cows and birds and expands the clinical data supporting the use of mRNA vaccines that may be needed if other influenza strains emerge with pandemic potential."

Moderna said the funding will support the expansion of clinical studies "for up to five additional subtypes of pandemic influenza."

The U.S. government previously awarded the vaccine manufacturer $176 million in July 2024 to help expedite the development of an mRNA vaccine that could be used for bird flu.

mRNA technology is the same type that was used in the development of some COVID-19 vaccines. While some vaccines use a weakened or inactive virus to stimulate an immune response, mRNA vaccines teach the body how to make proteins that can trigger an immune response and fight off an infection.

Researchers can often design mRNA vaccines more quickly than they can produce the live or weakened pathogens needed for a live-attenuated or inactivated vaccine.

The federal government already has two bird flu vaccine candidates, which use traditional vaccine technology, available in the nation's stockpile. Officials previously noted they'd have 10 million ready-to-use doses within the beginning of 2025. Vaccines were being stockpiled as a precaution.

"Avian flu variants have proven to be particularly unpredictable and dangerous to humans in the past. That is why this response has been a top priority for the Biden-Harris Administration and HHS," HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra said in a statement on Friday. "Accelerating the development of new vaccines will allow us to stay ahead and ensure that Americans have the tools they need to stay safe."

Bird flu cases in humans have been spreading across the country since April 2024 with 67 confirmed cases as of Friday, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The first death of a human bird flu patient was reported in Louisiana earlier this month. The patient was over the age of 65 and had underlying medical conditions, according to health officials.

Most human cases have occurred after coming into contact with infected cattle, infected poultry farms or other culling operations.

The CDC and other public health officials say there is currently no evidence of human-to-human transmission and the risk to the general public is low.

A Pakistani neuroscientist held in US custody has told Sky News she has hope she will be freed after "new evidence" emerged which may suggest her innocence.

Dr Aafia Siddiqui, 52, was once one of the most wanted women in the world for her alleged links to al Qaeda's leadership and was jailed for 86 years in 2010 for attempting to murder an FBI agent in Afghanistan.

Dr Siddiqui, dubbed "Lady al Qaeda" by her critics, has maintained her innocence and hopes the tide could now be turning.

"I hope I am not forgotten, and I hope that one day soon I will be released," she exclusively told Sky News, through her lawyer.

"I am... a victim of injustice, pure and simple. Every day is torture... it is not easy."

She added: "One day, Inshallah (God-willing), I will be released from this torment."

Dr Siddiqui's lawyer, Clive Stafford Smith, is calling on outgoing US President Joe Biden to issue a pardon and has submitted a 76,000-word dossier to him.

The Appeals court decision only upheld Hanen's ruling for the state of Texas, thereby suspending the program in the Lonestar state, and said the judge was incorrect in halting the program nationwide.

The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday upheld most of a lower court's ruling that former President Barack Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was unconstitutional, throwing the future of the program in jeopardy.

U.S. District Court Judge Andrew Hanen in September of 2023 ruled that the Biden administration could not codify the program as a memorandum and that efforts to do so violated immigration law, according to The Hill.

The Appeals court decision only upheld Hanen's ruling for the state of Texas, thereby suspending the program in the Lone Star state, and said the judge was incorrect in halting the program nationwide, per CNN.

The court ruled that Texas was the only state to demonstrate “sufficient evidence that DACA has caused the harms it alleges and that those costs would be partially alleviated if DACA were enjoined."

The state had argued that “DACA recipients impose over $750 million in annual costs on the state, those costs are traceable to and exacerbated by the Final Rule, and a favorable judgment against DACA would at least partially alleviate Texas’s harm,” the judges wrote, according to Bloomberg Law.

The court also barred the government from accepting new DACA applications.

The order comes as President-elect Donald Trump is set to take office on Monday, which means the Biden administration has no time to try and further appeal the decision. The incoming Trump administration has not commented on the ruling so far.

A Georgia state senator and hardline supporter of President-elect Trump appeared to be pushed to the floor before being arrested while trying to enter the state House chamber on Thursday.

State Sen. Colton Moore, who previously tried to have Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis impeached for indicting Trump, tried to enter the House floor to attend Gov. Brian Kemp's State of the State Address --- but was ultimately led away in handcuffs.

Moore is currently banned from entering the chamber after he blasted the state Senate's decision last year to consider a resolution to name a building at the University of North Georgia after the now-deceased former speaker David Ralston.

Moore accused Ralston of using his office to delay court cases for criminal defendants he had represented as an attorney. Ralston claimed in 2019 that his actions were entirely legal. (I heard that he said it in the Senate session. It's like the prior governor here representing Fani Willis, they protect their own)

"This body is about to memorialize, in my opinion, one of the most corrupt Georgia leaders that we are ever going to see in my lifetime," Moore exclaimed at the time.

On Wednesday, Moore wrote to current House Speaker Jon Burns outlining why he thought the ban was unconstitutional and said he intended to be at today’s joint session. "I will NEVER back down," Moore wrote on X, sharing the letter he penned to Burns. "I will ALWAYS speak the truth and represent the people of Northwest Georgia as their trusted America First Senator."

But when he tried to enter the chamber on Thursday, he was met by a wall of resistance and appeared to be pushed back by an attending doorman. Moore told state troopers in attendance that he had a constitutional right to enter and that a doorman should be arrested for breaking the law.

"This is a joint session of the General Assembly. Your House rules do not apply,"Moore told the men. "I'm going into the chamber." Unable to get in, Moore asked a state trooper whether he was stopping him from entering. The trooper appeared to say that the doormen were responsible for who entered.

A scuffle ensued, with video showing Moore appearing to be pushed to the floor by one of the doormen. He was then surrounded by state troopers and subsequently arrested.Burns said that the incident was "incredibly unfortunate."(Bullshit, he sent the guy that body slammed him)

"The senator refused to cooperate with doorkeepers and law enforcement and created a dangerous situation when he chose to use force against our law enforcement officers, dedicated doorkeepers and House staff,"Burnssaid in a statement to Fox News Digital. "I want to thank every House staff member and our entire House family forholding the line to honor Speaker Ralston’s legacy of dedicated service to our state. As you saw today, the integrity and decorum of this House are non-negotiable---period."

Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones said that "there is real work to be done this session and the focus should be on delivering for the people of Georgia instead of personal grievances and egos."

Meanwhile,Moore said that the state was "ruled by authoritarians" on his way out and that the ban was censorship of his voice as an elected official.

Georgia Republican chairman Josh McKoon said that he was"deeply disappointed" that Moore had been denied admission to the chamber and "shocked" that he had been taken into custody.

"It was not only legally appropriate to admit him to today’s proceedings --- it was simply the right thing to do," McKoon wrote in a statement to FOX 5 Atlanta. "Our focus should be on the excellent agenda being outlined by Governor Kemp today to continue to make Georgia the best place in the country to live, work, and raise a family — not internal conflicts."

In 2023, Georgia’s Republican Senate Caucus suspended Moore for attacking them for opposing his plan to impeach Willis for indicting Trump in an election interference case.

"The Georgia RINOs responded to my call to fight back against the Trump witch hunts by acting like children and throwing me out of the caucus," Moore wrote on X at the time. "But I’m not going anywhere."

Moore was the most prominent backer of a special session to impeach and remove Willis or defund her office, winning Trump’s endorsement.

Full Moon, Full Mars

On January 13 a Full Moon and a Full Mars were close, both bright and opposite the Sun in planet Earth's sky. In fact Mars was occulted, passing behind the Moon, when viewed from some locations in North America and northwest Africa. As seen from Richmond, Virginia, USA, this composite image sequence follows the evening lunar occultation before, during, and after the much anticipated celestial spectacle. The telescopic time series is constructed from an exposure made every two minutes while tracking the Moon over the hours encompassing the event. As a result, the Red Planet's trajectory seems to follow a gently curved path due to the Moon's slightly different rate of apparent motion. The next lunar occultation of bright planet Mars will be on February 9 when the moon is in a waxing gibbous phase. Lunar occultations are only ever visible from a fraction of the Earth's surface, though. The February 9 occultation of Mars will be seen from parts of Russia, China, eastern Canada, Greenland and other (mostly northern) locations, but a close conjunction of a bright Moon with Mars will be more widely visible from planet Earth.

A massive asteroid the size of the Empire State Building is zooming towards our planet this weekend.

The asteroid, named 2024 WY70, is estimated by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to be roughly 820 feet in diameter, with JPL's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) forecasting that it could be between 656 and 1443 feet across.

New York's Empire State Building is about 1,250 feet tall, while the Eiffel Tower is about 1,060 feet tall.

Despite its size, we won't be able to spot 2024 WY70 as it zips past our planet.

"Asteroids are generally too faint to have been detected by the current techniques and surveys, so it's very hard to see by our naked eyes," Minjae Kim, a research fellow in astronomy and astrophysics at the University of Warwick, told Newsweek.

2024 WY70 is expected to pass us on January 18 at a distance of 3,920,000 miles, which is about 16 times further away than the moon's 238,900-mile orbit around our planet.

"Asteroids are debris left over from the early formation of the Solar System," Martin Barstow, a professor of astrophysics and space science at the University of Leicester in the U.K., previously told Newsweek.

"They exist on a wide range of orbits due to gravitational interactions between them and other bodies in the solar system."

Asteroids are mostly found in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, but the gravity of planets especially Jupiter, can nudge asteroids onto trajectories that cross Earth's orbit.

CNEOS tracks a large number of asteroids all around the solar system, classifying them by size and distance from our planet.

2024 WY70 is a Near-Earth Object or NEO, due to it coming within about 120 million miles of the sun, or 30 million miles of Earth.

Due to its large size, 2024 WY70 is also classified as a potentially hazardous asteroid (PHAs) or potentially hazardous object (PHOs), which must be at least 460 feet across and come within around 4.7 million miles of the Earth.

"Asteroids and comets with a perihelion distance (closest to the Sun) less than 1.3 astronomical units (AU), or approximately 120 million miles/194 million km, are called near-Earth objects---or NEOs," Svetla Ben-Itzhak, an assistant professor of space and international relations at Johns Hopkins University, previously told Newsweek.

"Astronomers consider a near-Earth object a threat if it has an Earth minimum orbit intersection distance of 0.05 AU (around 4.7 million miles or 7.5 million km) or less and is at least 140 meters [460 feet] in diameter.

Those are known as potentially hazardous objects (PHOs)."

Jeffrey Epstein was offered a sweetheart plea deal by federal prosecutors in return for incriminating information that would lead to President Trump’s impeachment, according to the late pedophile’s cellmate.

Ex-Westchester cop and convicted killer Nicholas Tartaglione, Epstein’s bunkmate at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan weeks before his death in August 2019, said the disgraced financier dished on the dirt-digging expedition after a confab with the feds.

“He said, ‘When you were a cop, what do you know about proffers and cooperating?’ I said, ‘Jeff, it’s pretty simple, the prosecutors, you know, they caught a fish --- you. They’re not gonna let that fish off the hook unless you give them a bigger fish,'” recalled Tartaglione in a phone call with Jessica Reed Kraus, a California-based self-described journalist who recorded the conversation and later posted it to her Substack.

“He said, ‘Yeah, well, that’s what they said,'” the quadruple murderer recalled. “He said, ‘They told me they’d let me plead out something small, and I’ll do just a couple of years in a camp, if I can give them something on Trump to get him impeached.’

“He says, but the government told me I don’t have to prove what I say about Trump, as long as Trump’s people can’t disprove it,” Tartaglione said --- adding that Epstein considered “making stuff up” to save his skin. Tartaglione never said what Epstein ultimately planned to do.

Tartaglione, 57, was convicted in 2023 of murdering four people, including a man he tortured and strangled over stolen drug money. The one-time Briarcliff Manor cop was sentenced last year to four consecutive life sentences.

Tartaglione was Epstein’s cellmate when the moneyman was discovered with bruises on his neck on July 23, 2019. Epstein told his lawyers that Tartaglione “roughed him up,” which the cellmate denied.

Epstein was removed from Tartaglione’s cell and put on suicide watch. He killed himself three weeks later on Aug. 10 --- though questions over the possibility of foul play remain. While he was supposed to be placed with a new cellmate, Epstein was alone, according to a report from the Department of Justice Inspector General.

Epstein at the time was facing a raft of charges from federal prosecutors, including sex trafficking of minors and sexual exploitation and abuse.

Trump and Epstein did know each other, but they weren’t friends, Tartaglione said.

According to Tartaglione, Epstein said he knew Trump only socially and the two were not friendly. In fact, he said Trump once threw him out of a party at Mar-a-Lago for being flirtatious with young women.

“I said, ‘Well, do you know Trump?'” Tartaglione claimed in the phone call. “He says, ‘Well, you know, I know him. I met him, but we don’t like each other.’ I laughed. I said, ‘Why?’ He said, ‘Trump threw me out of a party at his place in Florida.’

“I said, ‘Why he throw you out? He said, ‘Oh he got mad, I was talking to some girl.’

“By now I got wind of what he was in there for,” Tartaglione told the interview. “And I said, ‘How old was the girl, Jeff?’ And he says, ‘Oh about 18, 19.’

“So, I was a cop. I said, ‘Jeff, that means probably 14, 15.’ And he says, ‘Well he threw me out. I haven’t talked to him since.'”

It is not clear when the party was.

Tartaglione said Epstein admitted, “I don’t know anything” about Trump.

Tartaglione added that Epstein was additionally considering turning because he wanted to save his “girlfriend” --- a likely reference to Ghislaine Maxwell, who was sentenced to 20 years for sex trafficking in 2022.

Before his death, Epstein said that he had so much dirt on Trump and Hillary Clinton that he could have had the 2016 election cancelled, his brother Mark Epstein told The Post last year.

The US president-elect launched the Solana-based token on Saturday

President-elect Donald Trump’s “official” meme coin, TRUMP, has surged to a near $14 billion market capitalization within hours of its launch, according to cryptocurrency trackers. The Solana-based meme token was unveiled early on Saturday, two days before Trump’s inauguration as the 47th president of the United States.

The token started trading at an opening price of $0.1824, but within five hours had jumped over 8,000%, trading at roughly $14.4 as of 08:00 GMT, according to Dexscreener. Its market cap stood at $14 billion at the time. Over 66,000 buyers have so far bought the token, outpacing the nearly 18,000 sellers. Liquidity also surged, topping $388 million.

Trump announced the launch of the coin on his official Truth Social and X accounts.

“My NEW Official Trump Meme is HERE! It’s time to celebrate everything we stand for: WINNING! Join my very special Trump Community. GET YOUR $TRUMP NOW,” the president-elect wrote on his social media platform.

The crypto community initially voiced concerns about the token’s legitimacy, with some warning of a possible hack or social engineering scheme. Pseudonymous blockchain engineer cygaar noted on X that the project’s official website mirrors those of Trump’s previous NFT collections and suggested that “either this is the greatest cyber heist of all time, or this is legitimate.” However, as Trump’s posts remained online, and with Polymarket data suggesting only a 10% chance of account compromise, skepticism began to subside, pushing the price of the token further up.

The token’s explosive growth has also drawn concerns regarding its allocation.

“80% of the token supply is locked in a multisignature wallet, amounting to $3 billion controlled by the creator, who also added $40 million in liquidity,” Conor Grogan, head of product business operations at Coinbase, said in a post on X, adding that the project was seeded with millions of dollars of funds from Binance and Gate, two exchanges that don’t serve US customers. Other analysts noted that 80% of the token’s circulating supply is allocated to Fight Fight Fight LLC and CIC Digital LLC, entities linked to the Trump Organization, with only 20% of the supply split equally between public investors and liquidity.

The launch of TRUMP comes as the president-elect continues to align himself with cryptocurrency initiatives. Once an outspoken crypto-skeptic, he made a U-turn during his election campaign and pledged to reshape the US cryptocurrency landscape to make the country the “crypto capital of the planet.” Paul Atkins, Trump’s pick to chair the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), is expected to spearhead these efforts. A known crypto advocate and former SEC commissioner, Atkins will replace Gary Gensler, who has been criticized for his crackdown on the industry.

NASA Kennedy Ground Systems Prepping Hardware for Artemis II, Beyond

Teams with NASA are gaining momentum as work progresses toward future lunar missions for the benefit of humanity as numerous flight hardware shipments from across the world arrived at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida for the first crewed Artemis flight test and follow-on lunar missions.

The skyline at Kennedy will soon see added structures as teams build up the ground systems needed to support them.

Crews are well underway with parallel preparations for the Artemis II flight, as well as buildup of NASA’s mobile launcher 2 tower for use during the launch of the SLS (Space Launch System) Block 1B rocket, beginning with the Artemis IV mission.

This version of NASA’s rocket will use a more powerful upper stage to launch with crew and more cargo on lunar missions.

Technicians have begun upper stage umbilical connections testing that will help supply fuel and other commodities to the rocket while at the launch pad.

In summer 2024, technicians from NASA and contractor Bechtel National, Inc. completed a milestone called jack and set, where the center’s mega-mover, the crawler transporter, repositioned the initial steel base assembly for mobile launcher 2 from temporary construction shoring to its six permanent pedestals near the Kennedy’s Vehicle Assembly Building.

“The NASA Bechtel mobile launcher 2 team is ahead of schedule and gaining momentum by the day,” stated Darrell Foster, ground systems integration manager, NASA’s Exploration Ground Systems Program at NASA Kennedy.

“In parallel to all of the progress at our main build site, the remaining tower modules are assembled and outfitted at a second construction site on center.”

As construction of the mobile launcher 2’s base continues, the assembly operations shift into integration of the modules that will make up the tower.

In mid-October 2024, crews completed installation of the chair, named for its resemblance to a giant seat.

The chair serves as the interface between the base deck and the vertical modules which are the components that will make up the tower, and stands at 80-feet-tall.

In December 2024, teams completed the rig and set Module 4 operation where the first of a total of seven 40-foot-tall modules was stacked on top of the chair.

Becthel crews rigged the module to a heavy lift crane, raised the module more than 150-feet, and secured the four corners to the tower chair.

Once complete, the entire mobile launcher structure will reach a height of nearly 400 feet -- approximately the length of four Olympic-sized swimming pools placed end-to-end.

On the opposite side of the center, test teams at the Launch Equipment Test Facility are testing the new umbilical interfaces, which will be located on mobile launcher 2, that will be needed to support the new SLS Block 1B Exploration Upper Stage.

The umbilicals are connecting lines that provide fuel, oxidizer, pneumatic pressure, instrumentation, and electrical connections from the mobile launcher to the upper stage and other elements of SLS and NASA’s Orion spacecraft.

“All ambient temperature testing has been successfully completed and the team is now beginning cryogenic testing, where liquid nitrogen and liquid hydrogen will flow through the umbilicals to verify acceptable performance,” stated Kevin Jumper, lab manager, NASA Launch Equipment Test Facility at Kennedy.

“The Exploration Upper Stage umbilical team has made significant progress on check-out and verification testing of the mobile launcher 2 umbilicals.”

The testing includes extension and retraction of the Exploration Upper Stage umbilical arms that will be installed on mobile launcher 2.

The test team remotely triggers the umbilical arms to retract, ensuring the ground and flight umbilical plates separate as expected, simulating the operation that will be performed at lift off.

NASA Posts Touching Tribute to the Late David Lynch

In the wake of celebrated surrealist director David Lynch's death at the age of 78, NASA has joined the throngs of mourners celebrating the life of the "Mulholland Drive" and "Blue Velvet" auteur.

"Keep your eye on the donut," the space agency wrote in a post on X-formerly-Twitter, "and not on the hole."

That simultaneously mundane and profound statement, published in one of Lynch's transcendental meditation books, was accompanied by an image of a black hole at the center of the M87 galaxy that resembled the delicious fried dough pastry at the heart of so many scenes in "Twin Peaks."

Most of Lynch's work --- save for his 1984 adaptation of "Dune" starring a young Kyle MacLachlan — took place on terra firma. Still, he encouraged everyone to "explore the otherworldly and the unknown," as NASA so aptly put it in its post.

"We will focus not on the loss, but on what we gained from the years we shared this planet with you," the space agency shared. "We will see you in our dreams."

The latter half of that tear-jerking homage is reminiscent of comments the "Twin Peaks" creator made in a rare 2023 interview with the BBC.

Conducted after the passing of composer and longtime Lynch collaborator Angelo Badalamenti the year prior, the interviewer noticed that the director kept referring to his old friend in the present tense --- and the response was flooring.

"You have to keep Angelo alive," Lynch said. "I believe life is a continuum, and that no one really dies, they just drop their physical body and we'll all meet again, like the song says."

"It's sad but it's not devastating if you think like that," he continued. "Otherwise, I don't see how anybody could ever, once they see someone die, that they'd just disappear forever and that's what we're all bound to do."

"I'm sorry but it just doesn't make any sense," the lifelong transcendental meditation enthusiast said. "It's a continuum, and we're all going to be fine at the end of the story."

Viewed through that lens, Lynch is merely further along the continuum than the rest of us --- and there's no doubt that those whose lives he touched will indeed be seeing him in their dreams.

COWVR and TEMPEST V10 Datasets Available in First Public Release

NASA's Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PO.DAAC) released the first three Compact Ocean Wind Vector Radiometer (COWVR) and Temporal Experiment for Storms and Tropical Systems (TEMPEST) datasets produced by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The COWVR and TEMPEST instruments are passive microwave radiometers installed on the International Space Station (ISS) as part of the Space Test Program - Houston 8 (STP-H8) technology demonstration mission.

The project aims to demonstrate a lower-cost, lighter-weight sensor architecture for providing microwave data, with the primary objective of ocean surface vector wind products and tropical cyclone intensity tracking for the Department of Defense (DoD).

The datasets include:

COWVR STP-H8 Surface Wind Vector and Column-Integrated Atmospheric Water Measurements Version 10.0 (COWVR_STPH8_L2_EDR_V10.0): This Level 2 dataset from the COWVR instrument provides geolocated surface wind vectors, precipitable water vapor, and integrated cloud liquid water, as well as the microwave brightness temperatures used to derive them.

COWVR STP-H8 Antenna and Microwave Brightness Temperatures Version 10.0 (COWVR_STPH8_L1_TSDR_V10.0): This Level 1 dataset from the COWVR instrument provides calibrated, geo-located antenna temperature and brightness temperatures, along with the sensor telemetry used to derive those values. Brightness temperatures are derived from the microwave band frequencies 18.7 gigahertz (GHz), 23.8 GHz, and 34.5 GHz. (Note: This product is best suited for a calibration/validation user or sensor expert.)

TEMPEST STP-H8 Antenna and Microwave Brightness Temperatures Version 10.0 (TEMPEST_STPH8_L1_TSDR_V10.0): This Level 1 dataset from the TEMPEST instrument includes satellite-based observations of calibrated, geo-located antenna temperature and brightness temperatures, along with the sensor telemetry used to derive those values. Brightness temperatures are derived from the microwave band frequencies 87, 164, 174, 178 and 181 GHz. (Note: This product is best suited for a calibration/validation user or sensor expert.)

Version 10.0 is the first unrestricted public release of these data, which are named as such to be consistent with the internal version numbering of the project team prior to release.

These datasets cover the period from January 2022 to the present, with forward streaming planned until August of 2025.

Both the Level 1 and Level 2 datasets provide data in HDF5 format, with roughly one file per hour (the orbital period of the International Space Station is approximately 90 minutes).

Delivering Data Faster and More Frequently

Developed by JPL and launched into space on December 21, 2021, COWVR and TEMPEST are passive microwave radiometers deployed on the Japanese Experiment Module Exposed Facility (JEM-EF) of the ISS for a three-year mission.

From their perch on the ISS, COWVR and TEMPEST will provide crucial data that scientists use to forecast weather and climate.

COWVR is responsible for measuring the speed and direction of winds blowing over the ocean surface, while TEMPEST observes the vertical distribution of water vapor and moisture in the atmosphere.

Such measurements are vital to weather prediction, as heat and moisture from the ocean influences atmospheric conditions and winds play a key role in driving ocean currents and distributing masses of warm air.

Better insight into how these processes interact is key to more accurate forecasting, but getting the requisite data to study them can be difficult.

From 2003 to 2020, measurements of ocean surface wind vectors, rain rates, and total precipitable water were primarily obtained by the WindSat instrument aboard the DoD’s Coriolis satellite.

Traveling in Sun-synchronous orbit, WindSat had an equatorial crossing time of 6 p.m. and a revisit time of 8 days.

Now, COWVR and TEMPEST are filling the data gap left by WindSat’s departure, and revisiting locations within the ISS’s orbit with greater frequency.

NASA Assigns Mary Beth Schwartz, David Korth to Johnson Center Posts

NASA has announced the appointments of Mary Beth Schwartz as head of center operations directorate at the Johnson Space Center and David Korth as deputy for Johnson’s safety and mission assurance directorate.

Schwartz, who has been working with NASA for almost 20 years after starting as an intern, was the immediate former deputy of Johnson’s center operations directorate, according to her LinkedIn profile.

Her previous positions in the agency include senior chair of the payload safety review panel for the International Space Station and Space Shuttle programs.

She also worked as manager of safety and mission assurance business office and led its budget consolidation and integration functions.

A graduate of bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from the University of Houston, Schwartz has received the NASA Exceptional Service medal the NASA Honor and Silver Snoopy awards.

Vanessa Wyche, Johnson Space Center director, cited Schwartz’s “unique perspective” in focusing center operations not only on mission and customer goals but also employee experience.

“I appreciate her vision for the organization, commitment to the mission and overall genuine respect of the workforce,” she said.

Korth’s Background

Wyche also acknowledged Korth’s track record meriting his appointment as Johnson’s safety and mission assurance directorate deputy, calling him an “outstanding leader and engineer” with a full grasp on the agency’s safety procedures.

“His leadership will ensure the center continues its safety-first ideology,” Wyche commented.

Korth has worked at NASA for over 17 years and held the role of deputy manager of the ISS Avionics and Software Office before his new appointment.

He also previously served as deputy manager of the ISS Systems Engineering Office where he concurrently headed procurement for the NASA commercial destination program.

His NASA career started in 1998 as an engineer in the ISS operations planning group, bringing with him over eight years of experience in the Houston-based aerospace company Barrios Technology.

He also previously worked part-time for five years as an adjunct mathematics instructor at Lee College.

Korth has earned several career recognitions, including a Rotary National Award for Space Achievement, two NASA Outstanding Leadership medals and a NASA Exceptional Achievement medal.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from Texas A&M University and a master’s degree in statistics from the University of Houston-Clear Lake.

President Biden has named 19 researchers who contribute to NASA’s mission as recipients of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE).

These recipients are among nearly 400 federally funded researchers receiving the honor.

Established in 1996 by the National Science and Technology Council, the PECASE Award is the highest honor given by the U.S. government to scientists and engineers who are beginning their research careers.

The award recognizes recipients’ potential to advance the frontiers of scientific knowledge and their commitment to community service, as demonstrated through professional leadership, education or community outreach.

“I am so impressed with these winners and what they have accomplished,” said Kate Calvin, chief scientist, NASA Headquarters in Washington.

Unique Moment Space Rock Strikes Driveway Captured on Camera

ARing doorbell camera has captured the moment a meteorite hit a driveway in Canada.

Newsweek has contacted the University of Alberta for comment via email.

According to the University of Alberta, the footage marks the first time the sound of a meteorite hitting Earth has ever been recorded.

In July, Joe Velaidum, who lives on Prince Edward Island, a Canadian province in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, noticed a small fragment of space rock on his property after walking his dogs. This week, he shared footage of the rock's impact with media outlets.

Velaidum returned from walking his dogs to find mysterious dust particles in his driveway. After reviewing his security footage and seeing a rock come flying out of nowhere, he suspected it was a meteorite.

The homeowner sent about 7 grams of the rock to Chris Herd, a curator of the University of Alberta's meteorite collection and professor in its science faculty, via the university's Meteorite Reporting System.

Herd confirmed that the rock was a meteorite after visiting the site and collecting more samples. He later concluded that Velaidum's clip was the first of its kind.

The meteorite likely broke off from an asteroid between Mars and Jupiter, Herd said.

The rock can be seen briefly in only one frame of the video, indicating its speed, the University of Alberta said. A cloud of dust can be seen rising from the ground where the rock falls.

In a news release issued by the University of Alberta on Monday, Herd said: "As the first and only meteorite from the province of PEI, the Charlottetown Meteorite sure announced its arrival in a spectacular way.

No other meteorite fall has been documented like this, complete with sound. It adds a whole new dimension to the natural history of the Island."

He added in a separate statement: "It's really awesome. It's actually the first and only meteorite ever found on the Island, and what a way to make that discovery.

Every time that this happens, it's a new sample from space. It's from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, so it's come a long way."

Velaidum told CBC News: "The shocking thing for me is that I was standing right there a couple of minutes right before this impact.

If I'd have seen it, I probably would've been standing right there, so it probably would've ripped me in half."

He told CTV News: "We need to be reminded that the lives that we lead are just a small part of this celestial drama that's so much bigger than we can possibly imagine."
