Abstract
Over the past 35 years, patients have suffered from a largely hidden epidemic of side effects from drugs that usually have few offsetting benefits. The pharmaceutical industry has corrupted the practice of medicine through its influence over what drugs are developed, how they are tested, and how medical knowledge is created. Since 1906, heavy commercial influence has compromised congressional legislation to protect the public from unsafe drugs. The authorization of user fees in 1992 has turned drug companies into the FDA's prime clients, deepening the regulatory and cultural capture of the agency. The announcements come as the FBI and Department of Homeland Security recently warned of likely terrorist attacks.
As Islamic terror incidents and national security threats increased under the Biden administration, major arrests, indictments and guilty pleas were recently announced in Virginia, North Carolina and Florida.
In Vienna, Virginia, 34-year-old former CIA analyst Asif William Rahman pleaded guilty Friday to retaining and transmitting “Top Secret National Defense Information,” including removing classified documents, photographing them, transmitting them, and destroying devices, according to a federal complaint. IHe was indicted by a grand jury and arrested last November. He remains in federal custody and faces 10 years in prison for both counts of willful retention and transmission of classified information related to national defense.
Classified documents he shared appeared on social media platforms detailing a U.S. foreign ally’s planned actions against a foreign adversary, the complaint states.
Raham, who had a Top-Secret security clearance with access to sensitive compartmented information, also “deleted and edited journal entries and written work product on his personal electronic devices to conceal his personal opinions on U.S. policy and drafted entries to construct a false narrative regarding his activity,” investigators said. He also admitted to destroying multiple electronic devices, including a personal cell phone and internet router he used to transmit classified information and photographs of classified documents. He also admitted to discarding them in public trash receptacles to avoid being caught.
For roughly six months last year, Rahman repeatedly accessed and printed classified national defense information, took them to his residence, reproduced them, altered them and communicated top secret information from his job to multiple people, the complaint states.
U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia Jessica Aber said, “Rahman’s actions placed lives at risk, undermined U.S. foreign relations, and compromised our ability to collect vital intelligence in the future.”
On Thursday, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina Michael Easley Jr. announced a criminal complaint against a 29-year-old Durham, North Carolina, resident was unsealed for his plan to join ISIS and engage in acts of terrorism.
Alexander Justin White was arrested prior to boarding a flight to Morocco to join ISIS. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison.
From May to October last year, under the name “Sulaiman Al-Amriki,” he allegedly made multiple social media posts supporting ISIS, including posting ISIS recruitment and fundraising videos. He was also involved in financial transactions with refugee camps known to be fronts to funnel money to ISIS members, according to the complaint.
His alleged goal was to join ISIS and become “a mujahideen,” a martyr, to fight “jihad,” Islamic holy war, according to the complaint. When making travel plans, he made it “appear as nothing more than a vacation when he in fact claimed that he would rather die than return to the United States,” the complaint states.
“We work closely with the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force to shut down suspected terrorist activities in the United States, including American citizens willing to commit violence against our troops,” Easley said.
The investigation involved the FBI’s Raleigh-based Joint Terrorism Task Force, including multiple local and state law enforcement agencies. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service and Morocco General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance were involved.
In Orlando, Florida, 44-year-old Jordanian Hashem Younis Hashem Hnaihen recently pleaded guilty to four counts of threatening to use explosives and one count of destruction of an energy facility. In convicted, he faces decades in prison.
According to court documents, beginning last June, a masked man began targeting and attacking Orlando-area businesses because of their perceived support for Israel. “Warning letters” to the federal government were left, including political demands and threats to “destroy or explode everything here in whole America. Especially the companies and factories that support the racist state of Israel,” according to the complaint.
Next, a solar power generation facility in Wedgefield, Florida, was destroyed. Solar panels were smashed, wires were cut, critical electronic equipment damaged, and threatening demand letters were also left. Another warning letter threatening to “destroy or explode everything” was found at an industrial propane gas distribution depot in Orlando.

The facility is expected to serve as a hub for Danish F-35 fighter jets and long-range drones, enhancing the kingdom’s ability to monitor and defend its Arctic territories.
"The base will be especially required to receive Danish fighter jets (F-35) to periodically stay and land in Kangerlussuaq due to periodic readiness to repel attack and protect sovereignty, as well as show force ... within the territory of the Kingdom of Denmark," the report stated.

Our nation relies on dedicated, selfless public servants every day. They are the lifeblood of our democracy.
Yet alarmingly, public servants have been subjected to ongoing threats and intimidation for faithfully discharging their duties.
In certain cases, some have even been threatened with criminal prosecutions, including General Mark A. Milley, Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, and the members and staff of the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol. These public servants have served our nation with honor and distinction and do not deserve to be the targets of unjustified and politically motivated prosecutions.
General Milley served our nation for more than 40 years, serving in multiple command and leadership posts and deploying to some of the most dangerous parts of the world to protect and defend democracy. As Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, he guided our Armed Forces through complex global security threats and strengthened our existing alliances while forging new ones.
For more than half a century, Dr. Fauci served our country. He saved countless lives by managing the government’s response to pressing health crises, including HIV/AIDS, as well as the Ebola and Zika viruses. During his tenure as my Chief Medical Advisor, he helped the country tackle a once-in-a-century pandemic. The United States is safer and healthier because of him.
On January 6, 2021, American democracy was tested when a mob of insurrectionists attacked the Capitol in an attempt to overturn a fair and free election by force and violence. In light of the significance of that day, Congress established the bipartisan Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol to investigate and report upon the facts, circumstances, and causes of the insurrection. The Select Committee fulfilled this mission with integrity and a commitment to discovering the truth. Rather than accept accountability, those who perpetrated the January 6th attack have taken every opportunity to undermine and intimidate those who participated in the Select Committee in an attempt to rewrite history, erase the stain of January 6th for partisan gain, and seek revenge, including by threatening criminal prosecutions.
I believe in the rule of law, and I am optimistic that the strength of our legal institutions will ultimately prevail over politics. But these are exceptional circumstances, and I cannot in good conscience do nothing. Baseless and politically motivated investigations wreak havoc on the lives, safety, and financial security of targeted individuals and their families. Even when individuals have done nothing wrong—and in fact have done the right thing—and will ultimately be exonerated, the mere fact of being investigated or prosecuted can irreparably damage reputations and finances.
That is why I am exercising my authority under the Constitution to pardon General Mark A. Milley, Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the Members of Congress and staff who served on the Select Committee, and the U.S. Capitol and D.C. Metropolitan police officers who testified before the Select Committee. The issuance of these pardons should not be mistaken as an acknowledgment that any individual engaged in any wrongdoing, nor should acceptance be misconstrued as an admission of guilt for any offense. Our nation owes these public servants a debt of gratitude for their tireless commitment to our country.

1. Pardons don’t seem to create immunity from prosecution, only conviction. You need to raise it as a defense.

Trump to Call for ‘Revolution of Common Sense’ in Inaugural Address
In his speech, excerpts of which were shared with The Wall Street Journal, the incoming president will proclaim a ‘new era of national success’

WASHINGTON—President-elect Donald Trump will call for a “revolution of common sense” during his inaugural address, according to prepared remarks, as he caps a historic comeback and embarks on an agenda that includes mass deportations, steep tariffs and slashing the size of the federal government.
“I return to the presidency confident and optimistic that we are at the start of a thrilling new era of national success. A tide of change is sweeping the country,” Trump is expected to say, according to remarks shared with The Wall Street Journal.
“My message to Americans today is that it is time for us to once again act with courage, vigor and the vitality of history’s greatest civilization.”
While a combative Trump in his 2017 address lamented “American carnage,” his speech has been designed to be more optimistic, people familiar with the drafting say, though Trump is known to veer off script.
At the same time, the 47th president is expected to dispense with some of the lofty rhetoric of his predecessors and describe in blunt terms what he views as the most pressing national problems and his solutions for them.
Trump is expected to sign several executive orders at the U.S. Capitol following his swearing-in, part of a flurry of day-one action.
Freezing temperatures forced the inauguration inside the Capitol, the first time since Ronald Reagan’s second inauguration in 1985. Washington is heavily barricaded, but officials weren’t expecting widespread protests, a sign of the diminished public opposition to Trump, whose comfortable victory in November has left Democrats demoralized and without a clear leader.
Trump for now enjoys mostly unified Republican support and the party narrowly controls the House and Senate, giving him a chance to pursue his ideas, which include building on the massive tax-cut package enacted in his first term and boosting American fossil fuels.
Since the election he has outlined provocative plans, including a bid to acquire Greenland, pointing to its strategically important location. He also is pledging to upend the Justice Department, which he has accused of pursuing politically motivated investigations against him and other Republicans.
During a rally Sunday, Trump promised to “act with historic speed and strength and fix every single crisis facing our country” and he exulted in his victory in what was one of the most tumultuous elections in modern times, including a near assassination in July.
Thousands of his supporters have arrived in Washington. Hotels, bars and restaurants over the weekend were packed, reflecting a more festive atmosphere than his first inauguration, when some Americans were reluctant to embrace him.
Pedicab drivers downtown were ferrying customers around while blaring Trump’s unofficial theme song, “Y.M.C.A.” by the Village People.
Trump plans to issue dozens of executive orders in his first few days, with immigration, border security and energy production at the forefront, and plans to travel to states to highlight those actions, according to people involved in the planning.
He will also move to gut federal diversity programs. Trump intends to issue an executive order on Monday to reinstate TikTok, buying more time to work out a deal for the platform to shed its Chinese ownership or close in the U.S. On Friday, he is scheduled to tour fire-ravaged Los Angeles.

At 78, Trump will be the oldest president to take the office, supplanting the mark set by his predecessor, Joe Biden, whose age became a focal point in the campaign, forcing the stunning turn of events that led to him being replaced on the ticket by Vice President Kamala Harris.
Former Ohio Sen. JD Vance will be sworn in as vice president, and at age 40, will be the third youngest in history to hold the job.
A new Wall Street Journal poll found that voters want a less assertive set of policies than Trump promised during the campaign, including on immigration and his plans to replace thousands of career civil-service workers with people chosen by the president.
Still, Trump enters the White House with more support than when he first took office. He further broadened the GOP coalition during his campaign, attracting more working-class voters and Black and Hispanic people, largely over his economic message. Inflation has cooled significantly from the pandemic and Trump inherits an overall strong economy.
He has moderated vows of quickly bringing down food prices and has backed away from his boast of swiftly ending the war in Ukraine.
Elon Musk, who will oversee a Department of Government Efficiency outside advisory panel, has dialed back talk about the size of cuts that can be achieved. Musk, the world’s richest man, will attend the inauguration, cementing his outsize role in the new administration.
Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg also plan to attend, former adversaries of Trump who have worked on a rapprochement. Scores of other leading executives are attending—eager to further curry favor with the incoming president—including TikTok Chief Executive Shou Chew.
Biden will attend, as will former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton. Former first lady Michelle Obama isn’t attending, underscoring tensions with Trump, who has for years attacked her and her husband.
Trump skipped Biden’s inauguration four years ago, angry over his loss and fresh off the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot, where his supporters tried to stop the certification of the vote. More than 1,500 people have been charged in connection with the attack, and Trump has suggested he is planning to pardon many of them.
Trump’s attempts to overturn the election led to indictments in Washington and Georgia but he outlasted those prosecutions and others. Earlier this month he was sentenced in New York in a hush-money payment case, making him a felon, but he faced no punishment. His ability to withstand the legal cases was just part of his comeback.
The GOP establishment in Washington was ready to move on from him after his 2020 loss to Biden, but Trump banked on his supporters across the country sticking with him. He beat back more than a dozen rivals and easily captured the GOP nomination.
Along the way, Trump faced two assassination attempts, one that left him bloodied yet defiant on a rally stage in Butler, Pa. The last defeated president to mount a successful comeback was Grover Cleveland, who was denied re-election in 1888 before rebounding in 1892.

Donald Trump is due to be sworn in for a second term as US president on Monday in Washington, DC.
The ceremony will begin around noon local time, followed by Trump’s inaugural address to the nation and a parade to the White House.
He is expected to unleash a torrent of executive orders later in the day on issues including energy, immigration, and trade. The announcements are part of efforts to undo the legacy of outgoing President Joe Biden and show immediate progress on policy areas that were key to Trump returning to the White House.

Comet ATLAS Rounds the Sun
Why does Comet ATLAS have such colorful tails? Last week Comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS) passed its closest to the Sun well inside the orbit of Mercury and brightened dramatically. Unfortunately, the comet was then so angularly near the Sun that it was very hard for humans to see. But NASA's SOHO spacecraft saw it. Pictured is a SOHO (LASCO C3) image of Comet ATLAS that is a composite of several different color filters. Of the several tails visible, the central white tails are likely made of dust and just reflecting back sunlight. The red, blue, and green tails are likely ion tails with their colors dominated by light emitted by specific gases that were ejected from the comet and energized by the Sun. Currently, Comet ATLAS is showing long tails in southern skies but fading as it moves out of the inner Solar System.
