Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel (D) said Tuesday that there is “absolutely” enough evidence to charge a group of Republicans with election fraud for falsely claiming to be the state’s electors during the last presidential election.

Nessel has yet to pursue charges against the 16 Republicans, instead referring the investigation to federal prosecutors for jurisdictional reasons, she said according to The Detroit News. Nessel did not rule out pursuing charges against the Republicans in the future.

“Seemingly there’s a conspiracy that occurred between multiple states. So if what your ultimate goal is, is not just to prosecute these 16 individuals, but to find out who put them up to this, is this part of a bigger conspiracy at play in order to undermine the legitimate results of the 2020 presidential election, not just in Michigan but nationally? … It creates jurisdictional issues,” Nessel said during a press conference, according to the Detroit Free Press.

“I feel confident we have enough evidence to charge if we decide to pursue that. Again, I want to make it clear, I haven’t ruled it out. But for all the reasons I stated, I think that it’s a better idea for the feds to pursue this,” she said.

The Michigan Republican Party slammed Nessel after the press briefing, accusing the Democrat of “playing political games.”

“Dana Nessel is playing political games with people’s lives and livelihoods for the sake of scoring political points ahead of an election,” GOP spokesman Gustavo Portela said in a statement.

On December 14, 2020, a group of 16 Democratic presidential electors met in the state Capitol to certify themselves as Michigan’s electors to cast votes in the 2020 presidential election. At the same time, a group of Republicans, including Michigan Republican Party Co-Chairwoman Meshawn Maddock and Republican National Committeewoman for Michigan Kathy Berden, met at the Michigan GOP’s headquarters to sign a certificate declaring themselves to be Michigan’s electors.

President Joe Biden beat former President Donald Trump in Michigan to win the state’s 16 electoral votes. Biden won the state with roughly 150,000 votes more than Trump.

The Secret Service improperly redacted hundreds of pages of records related to Hunter Biden’s overseas travel — and apparently withheld information about trips to China, Russia and other countries, two leading Republican senators claim.

In a Tuesday letter to Secret Service Director James Murray, Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) alleged the agency “hid names and other information contained in email conversations regarding Hunter Biden without any proper legal justification.”

Biden — whose father, President Biden, was vice president at the time — decided to ditch his Secret Service bodyguards before flying to Kazakhstan to pursue a deal on behalf of the Ukrainian energy company Burisma, the Washington Examiner reported last year.

Hunter Biden reportedly planned to meet with then-Kazakhstan Prime Minister Karim Massimov, who was arrested on treason charges Saturday following his ouster as head of the country’s counterintelligence and anti-terror agency.

Grassley and Johnson also said the Secret Service “did not produce any communications regarding Hunter Biden’s travel for the years 2010, 2011, and 2013,” even though its own “travel records show that Hunter Biden made trips to China and other destinations around the world, including, Russia, Italy, Spain and Mexico.”

The lawmakers demanded that the Secret Service provide complete, unredacted copies of the documents it turned over and explain why it didn’t produce records from 2010, 2011 and 2013.

The senators said they wanted a response “as soon as possible” and set a Jan. 26 deadline.

MISSION, Texas (Border Report) — The FBI late Wednesday was conducting an investigation at the Laredo home of Democratic U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, Border Report has confirmed.

In an email to Border Report, FBI spokeswoman Rosanne Hughes wrote: “The FBI was present in the vicinity of Windridge Drive and Estate Drive in Laredo conducting court-authorized law enforcement activity. The FBI cannot provide further comment on an ongoing investigation.”

Cuellar’s office told Border Report late Wednesday that the congressman will fully cooperate in any investigation.

“Congressman Cuellar will fully cooperate in any investigation. He is committed to ensuring that justice and the law are upheld,” his office said in a statement.

Texas lawmakers allege 2020 Census ‘undercount’ of border, demand Bureau meeting

The Monitor newspaper published photos that showed agents in and around Cuellar’s house and said the agents were taking photos.

Cuellar is vice chairman of the House Homeland Security Appropriations Committee, arguably the most powerful lawmaker on the South Texas border.

He is currently serving his ninth term in Congress representing Texas’ 28th Congressional District, which spans from Laredo to San Antonio and Mission, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley.

He is expected to face a stiff challenge during primary elections from Democratic hopeful Jessica Cisneros, an immigration lawyer who once interned in Cuellar’s office. Cuellar defeated Cisneros in 2020, however, she has galvanized support from many organizations throughout South Texas.

The FBI is conducting what it described as “court-authorized” law enforcement activity at the Laredo home of U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar.

Although FBI spokesperson Roseanne Hughes did not identify what the agency is investigating, she did issue a statement acknowledging the activity.

Asked for a statement about the FBI’s presence at Cuellar’s home, Hughes confirmed law enforcement activity in the area.

“The FBI was present in the vicinity of Windridge Drive and Estate Drive in Laredo conducting court-authorized law enforcement activity,” the statement read. “The FBI cannot provide further comment on an ongoing investigation.”

At Cuellar’s home, located in the 8200 block of Estate Drive,federal vehicles were seen with cases and other items taken from the congressman’s home as over a dozen agents filed in and out of the residence Wednesday afternoon.

Calls made to Cuellar and his office seeking comment have not been immediately returned.

It was unclear if anyone was at home during the time the FBI was present, but the dogs in the backyard wagged their tails and barked at the occasional neighbor lingering too long near the sidewalk.

A silent parade of onlookers drove slowly by the neighborhood, some stuck their phones out their windows like the driver of a white SUV, a sticker showing her support for one of Cuellar’s challengers clung to the rear window.

Agents worked into the night.

Shrugs and questions abound on the streets of Laredo, the congressman’s home, and on social media.

In a statement Wednesday night, the congressman’s office attributed the following to Cuellar: “Congressman Cuellar will fully cooperate in any investigation. He is committed to ensuring that justice and the law are upheld.”

This is a developing story.

An online tweet-turned-meme attempted to link then-U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke, and Mexican drug lord Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera (commonly knownas “El Chapo”) in a plot to “keep the USA/Mexico border open”:

Nothing implied or stated in this meme from January 2019 stands up to scrutiny, though. First off, the suggestion that the featured photograph captured some form of furtive meeting or secret negotiations between El Chapo and Democrats Pelosi and O’Rourke does not reflect reality. This picture was taken in May 2016 — while Guzmán was in custody in Mexico awaiting extradition to the United States — in conjunction with a tour of three Trans-Pacific Trade Partnership countries undertaken by a bipartisan U.S. House delegation. The man standing next to Pelosi is not El Chapo, but then-President Enrique Peña Nieto of Mexico:

A better version of the photograph was contemporaneously posted to Facebook by U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas, who was talking with Nieto at the time the picture was snapped (but was cropped out of the version used in the meme):

It is true that another drug lord claimed during El Chapo’s January 2019 trial that the latter had paid a bribe of $100 million to Nieto, but the alleged bribe was supposed to have been solicited to induce Nieto to call off the authorities’ attempts to find and arrest El Chapo, not to “keep the US/Mexico border open”:

The stunning testimony was delivered in a New York courtroom by Alex Cifuentes Villa, a Colombian drug lord who worked closely with Mr. Guzmán from 2007 to 2013, when the kingpin was hiding from the law at a series of remote ranches in the Sierra Madre mountains.

According to Mr. Cifuentes, Mr. Peña Nieto first reached out to Mr. Guzmán about the time he was elected president in late 2012, asking the drug lord for $250 million in exchange for calling off a nationwide manhunt for him.

Moreover, the bribe accusation against Nieto as related in court was both unproved and somewhat far-fetched:

“Did members of the [Nieto] administration take bribes?” says Alejandro Hope, a Mexican security analyst and columnist at the El Universal newspaper. “Yeah maybe. But at the end of the day Guzmán was captured twice, then extradited. So if he did make those bribes they were a very poor investment.”

Taking handouts from business has become almost expected, especially among members of Peña Nieto’s PRI party, which ruled Mexico for 71 years. Taking a briefcase of cash from the world’s most sought-after drug lord, though, is a brazen, idiotic move, Hope says. You would think someone in that position could at least transfer it through shell companies in the Cayman Islands.

Finally, O’Rourke did not run a “$70 million open borders campaign.” His position on immigration has been to oppose the construction of a border-long wall (of the type U.S. President Donald Trump has called for) as an unnecessary and ineffective measure for improving border security, but not to advocate for “open borders”:

Q: Would you accept some compromises here if you want to make changes, including, for instance, funding the president’s border wall?

A: I think this one is going to be on the American people. And I think, when we make the choice clear that we can do the right thing by this country and for those kids, and not do it at the price of a 2,000-mile, 30-foot-high, $30 billion wall; not doing it at the price of deporting people who are seeking asylum, deporting people in some cases back to certain death; not doing it at the cost of ending family migration, which is the story of this country — certainly of the O’Rourkes — and millions of families who have fled terror or starvation in their countries to be here. I think the American people are going to force us to do the right thing. That always happens in America. It is frustrating. It’s slow. It doesn’t happen right away. But, ultimately, we get it right. And I’m confident that the American people this time are going to get it right.

Nieto left office in December 2018, and El Chapo was sentenced to life in prison plus 30 years by a U.S. court in July 2019 and is currently serving his sentenceat ADX Florence.

AUGUSTA, GEORGIA – A U.S. Army major assigned to the U.S. Army Cyber Command at Fort Gordon, Ga., has beensentenced to 30 yearsin federal prison for producing child pornography.

JasonMichael Musgrove,41, of Grovetown, was sentenced to 360 months in prison by U.S. District Court Chief Judge J. Randal Hall after pleading guilty to Production of Child Pornography, said Bobby L. Christine, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia. Musgrove also was ordered to pay restitution of $9,000 to the victims and to register as a sex offender.

There is no parole in the federal system.

A Texas congressman is seeking to designate seven of the top Mexican cartels as “foreign terrorist organizations,” a move he says would give law enforcement in the U.S. enhanced tools to combat the cartels.

Critics of the proposal, by U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Austin, fear such a designation could harm Mexico’s ability to wage its own fight against the cartels — and damage the U.S.'s relationship with its southern neighbor.

McCaul’s legislation, HR 1270, targets the Arellano Félix Organization, Los Zetas, La Familia Michoacana, and the Beltran Leyva, Sinaloa, Juárez and Gulf cartels.

It would permit the government to freeze funds tied to the organizations and qualifies persons found guilty of aiding the cartels for 15 additional years of prison time. A life sentence is possible if the aid — including providing, among other things, identification documents, lodging, training, weapons and transportation — leads to the death of an individual.

“The definition under federal law of terrorism says ‘to intimidate a civilian population or a government by assassination or kidnappings.’ To me the cartels fall squarely into that definition,” says McCaul, a former chief of counter terrorism and national security in the U.S. attorney’s office. “I am concerned that Mexico is losing this war against the drug cartels and so are we.”

U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Laredo, fears that it could further complicate Mexican President Felipe Calderón's current battle against crime.

“I think this will damage our relationship with our partner Calderón, who has risked so much to fight the drug cartels," Cuellar says. "And I think this will only strengthen his political opposition. He doesn’t work in a vacuum."

Former Mexico officials with ties to Texas under investigation

A former governor of the Mexican border state of Tamaulipas forged close ties with Texas politicians before investigations in that country and a recent arrest in San Antonio cast a shadow over his tenure.

Tomás Yarrington Ruvalcaba,who ran Tamaulipas from 1999 to 2005, is one of three former governors the Mexican government acknowledged this month are the targets of a corruption probe.

And documents in a criminal case in Texas allege that Yarrington, who worked hand in hand with his Texas counterparts during his career as state treasurer, governor, Mexican congressman and border mayor, was on the takefrom one of Mexico's most notorious drug cartels.

The former Tamaulipas governors facing investigation in Mexico — Yarrington, Eugenio Hernández and Manuel Cavazos Lerma — often crossed the Rio Grande to rub elbows and pose for photos with their colleagues in Texas.

Yarrington, who has not been charged with any crimes and has publicly denied any wrongdoing, was once honored by the Texas Senate.

San Antonio raid

On Feb. 8, federal agents raided the Stone Oak-area home of Antonio Peña Arguelles, arresting the 56-year-old legal resident from Mexico and accusing him of money laundering. An affidavit filed by a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agent outlining the allegations against Peña Arguelles madeserious accusations about Yarrington.

An informant “described Antonio Peña Arguelles as a conduit between Mexican politicians, in particular Tomas Yarrington, and Zeta (drug cartel) members Miguel Treviño Morales and Heriberto Lazcano,” the agent wrote.

The affidavit went on to allege that Peña Arguelles funneled millions of dollars from the Zetas to Yarrington and other elected officials.

In arresting Peña, the DEA accused Yarrington of taking money from two of Mexico's most notorious organized crime figures.

The Dodd-Frank financial reform legislation of 2010 ordered the Government Accountability Office (GAO), an investigative body for Congress, to audit the Fed’s alphabet soup of emergency lending programs conducted during and after the 2008 financial crisis. The GAO found that a cumulative $16.1 trillion had been pumped out to Wall Street firms by the Fed – at super cheap interest rates. The GAO provided data for the peak amounts outstanding and also a cumulative total.

Why is a cumulative total essential and relevant? Because one institution in 2008, Citigroup, was insolvent for much of the time the Fed was flooding it with cheap loans. (Under law, the Fed is not allowed to make loans to an insolvent institution.) And when an insolvent institution is getting loans rolled over and over by the Fed for a span of two and a half years, at interest rates frequently below one percent when the market wouldn’t loan it money at even double-digit interest rates, it’s highly relevant to know the cumulative tally of just how much Citigroup got from the Fed. According to the GAO, that tally came to $2.5 trillion for just some of these Fed loan programs. (See page 131 of the GAO study here.)

The academic scholars that compiled the Fed’s loans during the financial crisis for the Levy Economics Institute also provided cumulative tallies. Their tally, which included additional Fed bailout programs not included by the GAO, came to $29 trillion.

The largest of the Fed’s emergency loan programs to Wall Street trading houses in 2008 was called the Primary Dealer Credit Facility, or in alphabet-soup-speak, PDCF. It made a cumulative tally of $8.9 trillion over a span of more than two years. Just three Wall Street trading firms received 64 percent of that money: Citigroup, a cumulative $2.02 trillion; Morgan Stanley, a cumulative $1.9 trillion; and Merrill Lynch, a cumulative $1.78 trillion.

Back in 2008 there was no law that forced the Fed to ever reveal the names of the banks that borrowed this money from the Fed and the amounts borrowed. The Dodd-Frank legislation made these disclosures by the Fed the law of the land. But Dodd-Frank set up a two-tier level of disclosures. If the emergency lending program was under Section 13(3) of the Federal Reserve Act, as the Primary Dealer Credit Facility was, the Fed would have to reveal the firm names and amounts borrowed one year after the program had been terminated. But emergency operations conducted through the Fed’s so-called “open market” operations would not have to reveal the names of the firms and amounts borrowed until two years after the loans were made.

Thus, it appears that in 2019 the Fed decided to make astronomical sums available to Wall Street’s trading houses not through a Primary Dealer Credit Facility (which it set up again in March 2020) but through its repo loan open market operations.

Illegal immigrants worried about having proper identification to fly can now use an arrest warrant as an alternate form of ID when presenting to airport security, according to a TSA letter obtained by the Daily Caller.

Responding to Republican Texas Rep. Lance Gooden’s Dec. 15 inquiry about illegal migrants flying across the country, TSA Administrator David Pekoske explained that certain Department of Homeland Security (DHS) documents may be considered acceptable forms of alternate identification for non-citizens, including a “Warrant for Arrest of Alien” and a “Warrant of Removal/Deportation.” -Daily Caller

"TSA’s response confirms the Biden Administration is knowingly putting our national security at risk," Rep. Gooden told the Caller, adding "Unknown and unvetted immigrants shouldn’t even be in the country, much less flying without proper identification."

The TSA's Pekoske wrote: "TSA is committed to ensuring that all travelers, regardless of immigration status, are pre-screened before they arrive to the airport, have their pre-screening status and identification verified at security checkpoints, and receive appropriate screening based on risk before entering the sterile area of the airport."

Pekoske outlined that the alien identification number found on a DHS document is processed through one or both of the following databases: the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) One mobile application or TSA’s National Transportation Vetting Center (NTVC).

Individuals who use the alternate forms of identification undergo extra screening, according to the letter.

Additionally, TSA said it screens passengers through its Secure Flight program before they enter airport security and board a plane to check if they are on terrorist database and other watch lists.

France calls for new 'European order'

The French leader has marked the beginning of his country’s presidency of the EU with a call for a new ‘European order’

French leader Emmanuel Macron, has marked the start of his country’s presidency of the EU by calling for a “frank” dialogue with Russia, which he deemed necessary for building a new rules-based “European order.”

“Our continent’s security requires strategic rearmament of our Europe as a force of peace and balance, particularly in our dialogue with Russia,” Macron said in a speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday.

He explained he has been making this point “for several years.”

“Both for us and for Russia, for the sake of the security of our continent which is indivisible, we need this dialogue,” Macron said, adding that it should be “a frank and demanding dialogue in the face of destabilization, interference and manipulation.”

According to the French president, cooperation with Russia must be based on principles and rules “to which we agreed and which we acted not against, not without, but with Russia thirty years ago.”

This new system, Macron argued, should be free of threats, coercion, and spheres of influence, and would give states a free choice when it comes to the membership of organizations or security arrangements, while guaranteeing their territorial integrity.

He suggested that this “new order of security and stability” should first be discussed within the EU, then within the NATO framework, before being proposed “for negotiation with Russia.”

Son of infamous Cold War hawk takes up new role amid growing tensions with Russia

Mark Brzezinski, son of former US national security advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski, has been sworn in as US ambassador to Poland. Vice President Kamala Harris conducted the ceremony on Wednesday, which was attended by Brzezinski’s sister Mika and brother-in-law Joe Scarborough, both hosts of MSNBC’s Morning Joe.

Brzezinski, who previously served as US ambassador to Sweden from 2011 to 2015, was nominated for the position in August and confirmed by the Senate last month.

His father, Zbigniew, served as the national security advisor under former president Jimmy Carter and was well known as the architect of the Grand Chessboard theory of geostrategic power. The elder Brzezinski viewed the Eurasian continent as the fulcrum of world power and believed it was in the best interests of the US to control it, given its richness in natural resources, physical wealth, and population.

His efforts to wrest control of Eurasia from the Soviet Union included funding and supporting the Mujahideen, the Islamic fundamentalist faction in Afghanistan which later became the Taliban. He openly spoke in interviews of seizing the opportunity to “giv[e] to the USSR its Vietnam war.”

However, the consequences of that project later led to the 9/11 attacks and America’s own war in Afghanistan. It became the longest in US history and eventually culminated in disaster for the Biden administration, whose pullout from Afghanistan last August was widely criticized and has contributed to his spiraling approval ratings.

Brzezinski the younger heads to Warsaw as tensions between the US and Russia mount, with the US attempting to frame troop movements within Russian borders as a plot to attack Ukraine despite no evidence of such a plan and NATO members threatening to further amass their own troops along Russia’s borders.
