Joe Biden’s Utter Ineptitude on Trade Policy

<snip>

The fact of the matter is that the Trump tariffs are popular. On June 6th of this year, the United Steelworkers union wrote an impassioned letter to the office of the United States Trade Representative defending the Trump tariffs. “The overall tariffs that have been imposed, and the breadth of the sectors and products involved, were designed to address both the CCP’s policies and practices, and the impact on our economy, producers, and workforce,” the union wrote. “The tariffs… all play a part in leveling the playing field, and are an important component of the overall posture with China.”

Steel tariffs, in particular, have had a serious effect on U.S. manufacturing. President Trump boldly imposed a whopping 25% tariff on steel imports into the U.S. Between that and the 10% aluminum tariff, we’re looking at roughly $40 billion in import duties. In total, duties on Chinese imports equate to about $300 billion. At this point, it should be abundantly clear that we are not talking about small potatoes here. Tariffs matter.

<snip>

As of now, the Trump tariffs have prevailed, and it seems as though Biden wishes the issue would just go away. Instead of leading the charge on trade policy, Biden has cowered in the fear of challenging a successful Trump-era policy. While Trump still remains “The Tariff Man,” Biden has claimed the title of “The Man Who Has No Clue What the Hell He is Doing.” One thing is very clear to me: Trump was perhaps the most competent and aggressive president on trade next to the great William McKinley.

Fauci’s Net Worth Soared To $12.6+ Million During Pandemic – Up $5 Million (2019-2021)

While millions of Americans suffered under his pandemic policies, Fauci's personal profits soared.

Last night, our auditors at OpenTheBooks.com received Dr. Anthony Fauci’s FY2021 financial disclosures from the National Institutes of Health.

The documents contain a wealth of previously unknown information. For example, the Fauci household’s net worth now exceeds $12.6 million – up $5 million from 2019 through 2021.

In January 2022, U.S. Senator Roger Marshall forced open Dr. Anthony Fauci’s unredacted FY2019 and 2020 financial disclosures. The release followed a heated Senate exchange between Fauci and Marshall that concluded with Fauci calling the senator a “moron.”

It was Fauci’s “code red moment” when America’s ‘top doctor’ melted down on national television in the Senate hearing. (When Marshall cited ‘Forbes,’ that was our research on Fauci’s financials published in my then-column at Forbes.)

It’s been a dogfight to open the books on the Fauci finances. For example, our organization has filed four federal lawsuits versus NIH to open the books.

During the ongoing pandemic year of 2021, the Fauci’s household income, perks and benefits, and unrealized investment gains totaled $2,832,876 — including federal income and benefits of $903,497; outside awards and royalties totaling $1,019,205; and $910,174 in investment gains.

Here are the numbers as compiled by our auditors at OpenTheBooks.com, an organization I lead. This analysis uses information we previously unearthed plus the newly released disclosures.

Investment Gains: $910,174

Disclosures show $910,174 in gains within the Fauci stock, bond, and money market portfolio during 2021 – in 2020, the portfolio gained $794,369. The total value of Dr. Fauci’s investment account was $10,271,626 and his wife’s investments totaled another $2,405,887, as of 12/31/2021.

These funds were held in a mix of trust, retirement, and college education accounts. Fauci has an IRA worth $706,219 (up $67,700); a defined benefit brokerage account totaling $2,551,210 (up $147,688); and a revocable trust worth $7,014,197 (up $1,718,299). His wife’s revocable trust is worth $2,269,225 (up $306,406) and an IRA totaling $136,662 (up $16,385).

The disclosures show that he’s invested in fairly broadly targeted mutual funds, with no reported holdings of individual stocks. The Fauci’s deposited an additional net $1,346,304 in savings during this period.

Fauci’s 2021 disclosures show that he continues with an ownership stake in a San Francisco restaurant, Jackson Fillmore, worth between $1,000 and $15,000: but received minimal income from the restaurant.

"No Evidence" US Involved In Nord Stream Pipeline Attack Because Pentagon Says So

Fox News reporter Jennifer Griffin has confirmed that the U.S. was not responsible for the Nord Stream 2 pipeline explosion, because the Pentagon told her so.

Yes, really.

Despite accusations flying that the United States could have been involved in the blasts that have reportedly could scupper the pipelines permanently, and without any investigation having taken place, Griffin’s crack journalism has solved the case.

“There is no evidence or indication the US was involved in any way with the Nordstream 2 pipeline explosions,” Griffin tweeted.

“My question at the Pentagon briefing today: Can you rule out that the U.S. was involved? Senior Military Official: ‘Yeah, we were absolutely not involved.’ ”

Well, that’s that then, case closed.

As Chris Menahan notes, the Fox News reporter has been guilty of brazenly amplifying false regime propaganda before.

“Earlier this year, Griffin put out the debunked hoax story that Russia bombed the Babi Yair holocaust memorial in Ukraine.”

The reporting was later debunked after an Israeli journalist visited the site and found it to be completely unscathed.

Griffin also recycled the lie that Russia was using “mobile crematoriums” to “evaporate” war dead, when the supposed video proving it was taken from a 2013 YouTube video.

“When news came out about US biolabs in Ukraine, Griffin also simply repeated Pentagon talking points to dismiss the story as a nothingburger,” writes Menahan.

When Griffin was recently rewarded with a new multiyear contract, she stated that it “has been an honor to provide viewers with trusted reporting from the Pentagon and across the world on issues that are paramount to all of us – the security and safety of our fellow citizens and allies.”

“Trusted reporting.”

Another $1.1BN In Arms Ukraine: "We Will Not Be Deterred," White House Says

On Wednesday President Joe Biden approved $1.1 billion more in military aid for Ukraine, marking the 22nd such installment, and as the US is warning Russia against following through with annexation of four territories which wrapped a 5-day referendum on joining the Russian Federation.

According to the White House Press Secretary, this latest defense package consists of "18 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or HIMARS, as well as munitions for those systems, 150 armored multipurpose vehicles, 150 tactical vehicles to tow weapons, 40 trucks and 80 trailers to transport heavy equipment, two radars for unmanned aerial systems, 20 multi-mission radars as well as secure communication systems and body armor."

The report continues, "Unlike a presidential drawdown authority, which pulls weapons directly from U.S. stockpiles, the latest security assistance package is authorized through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, or USAI, which uses funds appropriated by Congress."

In total this brings US commitment of security assistance to more than $16.2 billion since February, when the Russian invasion began. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in announcing the fresh defense aid, "We will not be deterred from supporting Ukraine."

Meanwhile, the West in general is likely about to hit some significant practical limitations concerning this vow of "not being deterred" - as Dave Des Roches, an associate professor and senior military fellow at the U.S. National Defense University, explained to CNBC:

"I’m greatly concerned. Unless we have new production, which takes months to ramp up, we’re not going to have the ability to supply the Ukrainians," Des Roches told CNBC.

Europe is running low, too. "The military stocks of most [European NATO] member states have been, I wouldn’t say exhausted, but depleted in a high proportion, because we have been providing a lot of capacity to the Ukrainians," Josep Borrell, the EU’s high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, said earlier this month.

EU mobile coverage may go down this winter – Reuters

The networks don’t have sufficient resilience to deal with possible blackouts, telecom officials told the news agency

Possible blackouts in the EU during the winter may leave people without a stable mobile connection because the existing backup power reserves are not sufficient, Reuters reported on Thursday, citing a warning it received from four telecom officials.

Telecoms could take measures like optimizing traffic flow or upgrading equipment to more power-efficient variants, but they would likely need government intervention to prevent mobile phone outages, the news agency said.

“We are a bit spoiled maybe in large parts of Europe where electricity is pretty stable and good,” Reuters quoted one of the unnamed executives as saying. “The investments in the energy storage area have maybe been less than in some other countries.”

According to Reuters analysis, Europe has some 500,000 mobile network towers, most of which are equipped with backup batteries that can last around 30 minutes in a blackout.

French electricity distributor Enedis plans for potential power cuts of up to two hours, with suspension of supply rotated between various parts of the country. Paris pledged to ensure that crucial consumers like hospitals and police stations are not impacted, but mobile networks are not on the list, according to Reuters sources.

The French utility told the agency that regular customers would be treated equally. A finance ministry official explained that “it’s not easy to isolate a mobile antenna” from other consumers on the power grid.

Swedish telecom regulator PTS said it was preparing for possible emergencies by buying transportable base stations and fuel stations, when asked about the issue. Germany’s Deutsche Telekom intends to use diesel generators to handle outages, according to the report. The head of the Italian telecom lobby Asstel, Massimo Sarmi, said in an interview with Reuters that his group wanted the government to exclude mobile networks from power rationing.

The EU faces possible blackouts after deciding to decouple its economy from Russian energy supplies in retaliation for Moscow’s military campaign in Ukraine. Brussels imposed restrictions on trade with Russia amid already surging energy prices in Europe.

Kremlin reveals next step on Donbass, Kherson, and Zaporozhye

Russian President Vladimir Putin will sign accession treaties on Friday, his spokesperson has announced

The Kremlin has revealed when Russian President Vladimir Putin will sign treaties on the inclusion of the two Donbass republics, as well as the self-proclaimed states in Kherson and Zaporozhye, into the Russian Federation. The move follows referendums held in the respective territories.

The ceremonial signing will take place in the St. George Hall inside the Kremlin Palace on Friday at 3pm Moscow time, after which Putin will deliver a “voluminous speech,” according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov. The Russian president will also personally meet with the heads of the new territories.

The announcement comes after the two republics and two self-proclaimed states made official requests to join the Russian Federation after having held public referendums on the issue between September 23 and 27. The move was overwhelmingly supported by the local population, according to official results announced late on Tuesday.

Peskov separately noted that Putin’s speech on Friday will not be a formal address to the Federal Assembly – the country’s parliament – stating that such a speech will be held in a completely different format and is yet to be announced.

As explained by Senator Konstantin Kosachev, the vice speaker of the upper house of Russia’s parliament, signing the treaties is only one of the key steps necessary to officially incorporate the new territories into the Russian Federation.

After Putin signs the treaties, they must be submitted to the country’s Constitutional Court to ensure they comply with Russian law. Once they are cleared, the documents have to be ratified by the lower house, the State Duma, and the upper house of parliament, the Federal Council. Only after that will the DPR, LPR, and the regions of Kherson and Zaporozhye officially become integrated into the Russian Federation.

The next session of the Federal Council is planned for October 4, according to chairman Valentina Matvienko, who said that if “everything is confirmed” the body will take the treaties on accepting the new territories up for consideration.

The EU and the US have repeatedly refused to accept the results of the referendums, calling them a “sham.” Western leaders have also vowed to never recognize “any kind of annexation in Ukraine.” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen claimed she was “determined to make the Kremlin pay for this further escalation,” while US State Secretary Antony Blinken stated that Kiev had “every right” to take back the territories that are trying to secede from its rule.

https://www.rt.com/russia/563737-putin-donbass-accession-treaties/

Blinken is the worst SOS in perhaps all of time. The State Department is supposed to support freedom, but they don’t. Our government has lost all authority to dictate anything to anyone. Since when is it not a regions right to recognise and join a country that is not killing them daily for 9 years? Russia and the regions are doing everything by the book of international law. Not exactly what Barry did with the Coup on Ukraine. The more I learn of the savage nature of our authoritarian Cabal government the more I understand the US is responsible for billions of deaths around the world, and they are cool with it. They want to the same in our country.

NATO tested underwater ‘equipment’ close to Nord Stream leak zone – Moscow

In June, the alliance experimented with unmanned subs near the island of Bornholm

NATO conducted exercises using deep-sea equipment in the area where gas leaks in the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines were detected this week, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova said on Thursday. She added that the entire Baltic Sea is “packed full” of the bloc’s military infrastructure.

Speaking at a regular press briefing on Thursday, Zakharova dismissed any allegations that Russia was behind the incident. “May I ask you a question? When exactly did Russia decide it wanted to stop supplying energy to Europe?” she asked.

Zakharova said NATO was engaged in military activities close to the location where the leaks were found, noting that it might have presented an interesting “opportunity” for the alliance.

“So, maybe the NATO bases never conducted exercises there, while American soldiers have never been stationed on the territory of nearby countries?” she quipped, adding that this summer "in the area of Bornholm, Denmark, NATO conducted exercises that used deep-sea equipment”.

Zakharova was apparently referring to Exercise Baltic Operations (BALTOPS) 22 in the Baltic Sea, which took place in June 2022 and were meant to demonstrate the military bloc's “mine hunting capabilities,” according to the statement by the US Navy at the time. In particular it sought to experiment with Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUV) by deploying them off the coast of Bornholm island.

Zakharova urged Washington to offer “an explanation” and “confess” to the truth, saying that the US had left that job to Poland's former foreign minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, who earlier “thanked” the US for destroying the pipeline.

NATO said Thursday that the pipelines were damaged in what appeared to be a “deliberate, reckless, and irresponsible acts of sabotage,” promising to meet any attack on its critical infrastructure “with a united and determined response.”

Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the Nord Stream leaks as a probable “terrorist act” which is unlikely to have been possible “without the involvement of some state power.”

On Monday, Denmark reported leaks from the pipelines after the operator reported a loss of pressure on both Nord Stream 1 and 2. Danish and Swedish authorities later said there had been a series of undersea explosions near Bornholm. In total, there have been four gas leaks detected in the Nord Stream system.

EU state threatens to block new anti-Russia sanctions

If new restrictions target the energy sector, there will be no backing from Hungary, a senior official has said

Budapest will not support any new anti-Russian sanctions proposed by the EU if they target Russian energy, a senior official in the government of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has warned.

“Hungary has done a lot already to maintain European unity but if there are energy sanctions in the package, then we cannot and will not support it,” Gergely Gulyas, Orban’s chief of staff, told journalists during a briefing on Thursday.

“We are waiting for a final, full list of sanctions and then we can negotiate about it,” he added. “Hungary cannot support energy sanctions.”

Gulyas was referring to the eighth package of sanctions that EU members are currently debating. The official reiterated his government’s criticism of Brussels’ policy.

The restrictions imposed on Russian trade have failed to put an end to Moscow’s military operation in Ukraine, he said. They also hurt European nations worse than they did Russia, contrary to what the EU leadership promised, he added, citing surging energy prices and the profits that Russia has raked thanks to them.

Hungary is heavily dependent on Russian energy supplies and has been resisting Brussels, as it pressured member states to decouple their economies from the source. Budapest secured a waiver for itself when an embargo on importing Russian oil was included in one of the previous rounds of sanctions in May.

The new EU package may include measures to enforce a price cap for Russian oil bought by third parties, more individual sanctions against Russian citizens, and further curbs on EU trade with Russia, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told journalists on Wednesday.

America’s Throwaway Spies

How the CIA failed Iranian informants in its secret war with Tehran

https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/usa-spies-iran

The spy was minutes from leaving Iran when he was nabbed.

Gholamreza Hosseini was at Imam Khomeini Airport in Tehran in late 2010, preparing for a flight to Bangkok. There, the Iranian industrial engineer would meet his Central Intelligence Agency handlers. But before he could pay his exit tax to leave the country, the airport ATM machine rejected his card as invalid. Moments later, a security officer asked to see Hosseini’s passport before escorting him away.

Hosseini said he was brought to an empty VIP lounge and told to sit on a couch that had been turned to face a wall. Left alone for a dizzying few moments and not seeing any security cameras, Hosseini thrust his hand into his trouser pocket, fishing out a memory card full of state secrets that could now get him hanged. He shoved the card into his mouth, chewed it to pieces and swallowed.

Not long after, Ministry of Intelligence agents entered the room and the interrogation began, punctuated by beatings, Hosseini recounted. His denials and the destruction of the data were worthless; they seemed to know everything already. But how?

“These are things I never told anyone in the world,” Hosseini told Reuters. As his mind raced, Hosseini even wondered whether the CIA itself had sold him out.

Rather than betrayal, Hosseini was the victim of CIA negligence, a year-long Reuters investigation into the agency’s handling of its informants found. A faulty CIA covert communications system made it easy for Iranian intelligence to identify and capture him. Jailed for nearly a decade and speaking out for the first time, Hosseini said he never heard from the agency again, even after he was released in 2019.

The CIA declined to comment on Hosseini’s account.

Hosseini’s experience of sloppy handling and abandonment was not unique. In interviews with six Iranian former CIA informants, Reuters found that the agency was careless in other ways amid its intense drive to gather intelligence in Iran, putting in peril those risking their lives to help the United States.

One informant said the CIA instructed him to make his information drops in Turkey at a location the agency knew was under surveillance by Iran. Another man, a former government worker who traveled to Abu Dhabi to seek a U.S. visa, claims a CIA officer there tried unsuccessfully to push him into spying for the United States, leading to his arrest when he returned to Iran.

Such aggressive steps by the CIA sometimes put average Iranians in danger with little prospect of gaining critical intelligence. When these men were caught, the agency provided no assistance to the informants or their families, even years later, the six Iranians said.

James Olson, former chief of CIA counterintelligence, said he was unaware of these specific cases. But he said any unnecessary compromise of sources by the agency would represent both a professional and ethical failure.

Inspector General: The IRS Uses Cloud Computing Services Without Adequate Security Controls, Putting Taxpayer Data At Risk

Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, Cloud Services Were Implemented Without Key Security Controls, Placing Taxpayer Data at Risk (No. 2022-20-052) (Sept. 27, 2022):

To facilitate and guide its cloud security implementation efforts, the IRS developed its Cloud Security Reference Architecture in September 2019 and the Cybersecurity Cloud Operations Framework in November 2019. The IRS issued its updated Cloud Strategy and Cloud Security Internal Revenue Manual in March 2021 and September 2021, respectively.

By the end of Calendar Year 2020, the IRS had fully implemented 56 cloud services, 12 of which contained taxpayer data. The IRS deployed these cloud services without fully implemented security controls for protecting the data. ... [T]he IRS continued to accelerate cloud adoption without ensuring that important security controls designed to protect taxpayer data were in place in the cloud environment. ...

Control weaknesses over cloud computing services can pose a substantial risk to taxpayer records currently residing on these services. The potential harm includes breach and unauthorized access and disclosure of taxpayer information.

U.S. says ex-Army major and his wife tried to leak military health data to Russia

https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-charges-ex-army-major-his-wife-over-alleged-plot-leak-military-health-data-2022-09-29

WASHINGTON, Sept 29 (Reuters) - A former U.S. Army major and his anesthesiologist wife have been criminally charged for allegedly plotting to leak highly sensitive healthcare data about military patients to Russia, the Justice Department revealed on Thursday.

Jamie Lee Henry, the former major who was also a doctor at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, and his wife, Dr. Anna Gabrielian, were charged in an unsealed indictment in a federal court in Maryland with conspiracy and the wrongful disclosure of individually identifiable health information about patients at the Army base.

Reuters could not immediately determine who is representing them in the case.

The indictment alleges that the plot started after Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine.

Prosecutors said the pair wanted to try to help the Russian government by providing them with data to help the Putin regime "gain insights into the medical conditions of individuals associated with the U.S. government and military."

The two met with someone whom they believed was a Russian official, but in fact was actually an FBI undercover agent, the indictment says.

At a hotel in Baltimore on Aug. 17, Gabrielian told the undercover agent "she was motivated by patriotism toward Russia to provide any assistance she could to Russia, even if it meant being fired or going to jail," the indictment says.

In the meeting, she volunteered to bring her husband into the scheme, saying he had information about prior military training the United States provided to Ukraine, among other things.

At another meeting later that day, Henry told the undercover agent he too was committed to Russia, and claimed he had even contemplated volunteering to join the Russian army.

"The way I am viewing what is going on in Ukraine now, is that the United States is using Ukrainians as a proxy for their own hatred toward Russia," he allegedly told the agent.

The agent in turn urged them to read a book called "Inside the Aquarium: The Making of a Top Soviet Spy," telling the pair it would help them understand what they were about to do.

"It's the mentality of sacrificing everything ... and loyalty in you from day one," the agent said. "That's not something you walked away from."

Apparently Henry had some reservations about providing healthcare data, saying it would violate the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the indictment says, but his wife had no hesitations.

In a subsequent Aug. 24 meeting, she told the undercover agent her husband was a "coward" to be concerned about violating HIPAA, but she violated the law "all the time" and she would see to it that they could provide Russia with access to medical records from Fort Bragg patients.

By the end of the month, she had handed over information on current and former military officials and their spouses, it says.

Iron Mountain CEO ‘praying for inflation’ because it’s good for business: report

The chief executive of a Boston-based tech firm told investors that he has been “praying for inflation” because it’s good for his business, according to a report.

William Meaney, CEO of data storage and management company Iron Mountain, told Wall Street analysts last week that high prices benefit the company’s margins, which is why he has been “doing my inflation dance praying for inflation,” according to audio of the speech obtained by the news site The Intercept.

Meaney told investors on Sept. 20 that raising prices “obviously covers our increased costs, but … a lot of that flows down to the bottom line.”

“Where we’ve had inflation running at fairly rapid rates … we’re able to price ahead of inflation” — or increase prices beyond the rate at which the Consumer Price Index has risen, Meaney told investors, according to The Intercept.

Meaney acknowledged that what was good for his company may be bad for the general public.

“I wish I didn’t do such a good dance, but that’s more on a personal basis than on a business model,” he said.

The Post has sought comment from Iron Mountain.

Meaney said that other firms are also raising prices to grapple with inflation, too.

“People are seeing what FedEx, UPS, and others are having to do to actually manage their business and pass on that inflation,” he was quoted as saying by The Intercept.

Last week, FedEx said its delivery rates will increase by an average of 6.9% beginning Jan. 2. The week before, FedEx sent stocks tumbling after it revealed disappointing quarterly profits, blaming high costs for labor and fuel in addition to weakening demand.

Last November, UPS hiked its shipping rates by an average of 5.9%.

The Post has sought comment from FedEx and UPS.

Joe Karasin, the head of growth marketing at CircleIt, a Chicago-based software company, told The Post that the comments were off base.

Ex-Democrat congressman sentenced to 30 months in prison for election fraud

Myers fraudulently stuffed the ballot boxes in support of specific Pennsylvania Democrats from 2014 to 2018.

By Madeleine Hubbard

Updated: September 29, 2022 - 1:58pm

Former Pennsylvania Democrat Rep. Michael "Ozzie" Myers has been sentenced to 30 months in prison after pleading guilty to election fraud.

Myers, 79, pleaded guilty in June to several election fraud charges, including "orchestrating schemes to fraudulently stuff the ballot boxes for specific Democratic candidates in the 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 Pennsylvania elections," the Justice Department said Tuesday in announcing his sentence.

Myers would charge the candidates "consulting fees," which he would in turn use as bribes to help his clients win the election.

He worked with at least two election judges in the scandal, court documents show.

Federal District Court Judge Paul S. Diamond also ordered Myers to pay $100,000 in fines, $10,000 of which is due immediately, and submit to three years of supervised probation after serving his term in prison.

Myers, who served in the House from 1976 to 1980, was expelled from his position after being involved in the Abscam bribery scandal where FBI agents posed as Arab sheiks. He served time in prison after being convicted of bribery and conspiracy.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Jacqueline Maguire said Myers is "now a federal felon twice over, heading back behind bars, with time to consider the great consequence of free and fair elections."

More than 50 paid employees of global arms companies are working inside the UK’s Ministry of Defence, openDemocracy can reveal, sparking questions about conflicts of interest and national security.

They include nine staffers on long-term secondment from the UK’s biggest weapons manufacturer, BAE Systems, some of whom have been embedded inside the department for years.

Last year, the company made more than £4.1bn in sales from the MoD, boasting about its “strong and long-standing relationships” with the UK government. Almost all of this money was spent through contracts that were awarded without competitive tender.

The government would not say whether the secondment scheme represented a conflict of interest.

Campaigners today called on the government to come clean about lobbyists and business officials working in Westminster. The finding comes after it emerged that Liz Truss’s top aide, Mark Fullbrook, is being paid via his own lobbying firm.

Dr Michael Ofori-Mensah, head of research at Transparency International Defence and Security, said:

“Seconding industry insiders for senior Whitehall roles can provide invaluable insight, but also carries major conflict of interest risks.

“Government should do more to mitigate the risks of captured policy and procurement by establishing a comprehensive register of lobbyists and strengthening oversight of the revolving door between the public and private sector.”

Records obtained by openDemocracy show that at least four BAE officials have been based for over three years in Defence Equipment and Support, the arms-length government body that purchases military goods and services from companies like BAE.

A further six MoD staff are on secondment from Qinetiq, a huge defence technology company, while Rolls-Royce and Babcock have supplied at least two staffers each.

Democrats scrap plan to vote on stock trading ban before elections

House Democrats have scrapped a tentative plan to move this month on legislation barring lawmakers from trading stocks — a vote sought by some Democrats heading into the midterm elections.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said Thursday that there was not enough time for lawmakers to study the details of the proposal, which had been introduced just two days earlier, before the House leaves Washington Friday for the long midterm recess.

“People have to look at it,” Hoyer told reporters gathered in his office in the Capitol.

“It’s an important issue,” he continued, and leaders want the extra time “to make sure that if and when we do something, we do it right.”

The announcement is a departure from comments made by Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) earlier in the month, when she indicated the negotiations were going well “and we believe we have a product that we can bring to the floor this month.”

It’s also certain to anger those Democrats who were pressing to vote on a reform proposal — one that’s popular among voters — before November’s elections. Some supporters of the legislation said this week that the true reason the vote was punted was that Democratic leaders simply don’t support the concept of banning lawmakers from owning and trading stocks.

Pelosi and Hoyer have been among those prominent opponents, noting that federal law already prohibits insider trading and warning that a special ban for members of Congress might dissuade talented people from running for office.

Yet the proposal has gained enormous momentum in the current Congress following revelations that scores of lawmakers have violated existing laws designed to eliminate conflicts of interest between legislators and the investments they pursue.

Even if no laws are violated, supporters of the ban say, the current system can create the damaging perception lawmakers are trading on information not available to the general public or crafting legislation to boost their own finances.

That pressure from within the caucus forced Pelosi to have a change of heart earlier in the year, when she directed Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), chair of the House Administration Committee, to draft a stock ban proposal based on “where the support is in our caucus.”

After months of negotiations, Lofgren released that proposal on Tuesday night. The wide-ranging legislation prohibits stock trades not only by members of Congress, but also their spouses and dependent children, senior congressional aids, the president, the vice president and high-ranking members of the judicial branch, including Supreme Court justices.

As AG, Cortez Masto Left Thousands of Rape Kits Untested. Laxalt Helped Clear the Backlog—And Arrests Followed.

Nevada's former top cops now facing off for crucial Senate seat

With Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto as Nevada's attorney general, thousands of rape kits sat untested. When Adam Laxalt took over the role, the Republican Senate hopeful secured millions of dollars to clear the backlog, leading to more than a dozen arrests.

In October 2014—the tail end of Cortez Masto's eight-year term as Nevada's top cop— a national nonprofit found that just 16 percent of the 5,231 rape kits collected in Las Vegas from 2004 to 2013 were examined, leaving nearly 4,400 untested. Statewide, the number of untested kits reached 7,500, prompting Laxalt to pledge during his 2018 campaign to "clear up the backlog." Within months of taking the attorney general's office in 2015, Laxalt secured $3.7 million to do just that, and by November 2018, nearly 7,400 untested kits had been sent to labs for testing.

In some cases, the testing of those kits led to high-profile arrests. In November 2020, for example, police arrested a 49-year-old Las Vegas man for a sexual assault that a woman reported in 2012, Cortez Masto's fifth year as attorney general. The kit stemming from the assault, however, went untested until 2018, when Laxalt held the office. The kit's eventual examination revealed a DNA match with the alleged assailant, who had prior arrests for battery and domestic violence. Another backlogged rape kit tested in 2016 linked a suspect to a 1997 rape and murder.

Now, Laxalt and Cortez Masto are squaring off for a coveted Senate seat that could determine control of the upper chamber come 2023. Cortez Masto has leaned on her tenure as attorney general in that race—her campaign site says the Democrat "kept our communities safe" and "made it her mission to stand up for vulnerable women and girls." Cortez Masto's inaction on Nevada's substantial rape kit backlog, however, could give Laxalt an opening as the political opponents directly compare their records at the helm of the same office.

"By doing nothing about the thousands of untested sexual assault kits, Masto neglected victims and allowed violent criminals and killers to prey on more people," Laxalt told the Washington Free Beacon. "Fixing this egregious failure was one of my top priorities as AG, and we moved heaven and earth to process those kits quickly and get justice for the victims. I cleaned up her mess before, and I’m ready to do it again in the U.S. Senate."

Cortez Masto, whose campaign did not return a request for comment, faced criticism over the kit backlog during her first Senate run in 2016. At the time, a Senate Leadership Fund ad noted that during Cortez Masto's time as attorney general, "thousands of rape kits were never sent for DNA analysis." Even Cortez Masto's media allies confirmed the charge—a 2016 PolitiFact article said it's "hard to find any evidence that [Cortez Masto] took on the specific problem of the state's rape kit backlog while in office from 2006 to 2014," whereas Laxalt "was able to secure roughly $3.7 million in grants and redirected settlement funds to pay for funding the backlog about a year after taking office."

Beyond her passiveness on Nevada's rape kit backlog, Cortez Masto accepted an array of lavish gifts as attorney general, including a $750 luxury handbag and complimentary tickets to award shows and sporting events. Laxalt, meanwhile, declined to take political gifts as Nevada's top law enforcement officer, saying, "If I want to go to a boxing event, I'll either pay for it myself or not go." Cortez Masto's net worth has also skyrocketed since she was sworn in as senator in 2017—while USA Today called Cortez Masto's finances "relatively modest" during her 2016 campaign, she is now worth as much as $7.5 million, according to her most recent federal financial disclosure. Still, Cortez Masto says she ran for office to "serve and give back."

Cortez Masto and Laxalt are set to square off in November after both candidates advanced from their June primaries. Cortez Masto, who is often identified as the "most vulnerable U.S. senator in America" in her joint fundraising pleas, trails Laxalt by 1 point, according to a Thursday poll from liberal think tank Data for Progress.

‘Zuckbucks 2.0’: Democrat Operatives Are Helping Milwaukee Rig Its 2022 Elections

The Republican Party of Wisconsin has filed a lawsuit challenging the city of Milwaukee’s “Milwaukee Votes 2022” initiative, after an exclusive report by Empower Wisconsin revealed that Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson asked a Democratic Party operative for help spinning the city’s privately funded get-out-the-vote campaign, which some critics label “Zuckbucks 2.0.”

“The Republican Party of Wisconsin is deeply concerned that cities like Milwaukee are working with Democrat operatives and partisan third party groups to get out the vote in a manner designed to tip the scales for Democrats,” Mark Jefferson, executive director of the Republican Party of Wisconsin said in a press release. “Government’s role in elections must be to ensure fairness and transparency, not to benefit one party at the expense of another, and we will aggressively fight to ensure that election laws are followed.”

In text and emails obtained by state Rep. Janel Brandtjen’s public records request, Johnson and his aide Jeff Fleming ask left-wing operative and political consultant Sachin Chheda for how to respond to questions regarding “Milwaukee Votes 2022,” a door-to-door canvassing get-out-the-vote campaign “funded by the private sector.” Chheda has an extensive history of working for Democratic political campaigns, the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, and former Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle.

“Getting multiple media requests on where the $$$ is coming from for canvassing and outreach. Do you have an answer?” Fleming texted Chheda on Sept. 12.

“Private donors and foundations,” Chheda responded, before adding that Fleming could also direct reporters’ questions to Melissa Baldauff, another Democratic Party activist (and former communications director for Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers) who is the spokeswoman for Milwaukee Votes 2022, per the records.

But Chheda then changed his mind, texting Fleming, “Actually hold on. Can we just sit tight for an hour and then get back to folks?” Fleming’s response was not included in the requested records.

A couple of days later, Chheda texted Johnson himself and asked if there was any update on “whether you got these questions at the art museum?”

Johnson responded:

Hey, Sachin. Yes they did ask about Milwaukee Votes 2022. I said that it is:

– nonpartisan

– an initiative that we spoke about going back to May

– encourages all voters to be engaged regardless of party

– Isn’t much different than the activity we see before elections

–Just turn on your television and you’ll see private dollars expended to encourage voters.

Facebook Announces Hiring Freeze, Warns Of "Team Restructuring", Stocks Slumps

As advertising revenue growth stalls, Meta Platforms Inc., the owner of Facebook and Instagram, told employees that it plans to implement a hiring freeze and restructure employee teams in the latest effort to trim costs, reported Bloomberg.

A person in attendance during a company Q&A session said CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the hiring freeze as this is the latest evidence advertising revenue growth for the social media giant is slowing. There's also the concern about waning activity among users.

"For the first 18 years of the company, we basically grew quickly basically every year, and then more recently our revenue has been flat to slightly down for the first time," Zuckerberg told staff Thursday.

"I had hoped the economy would have more clearly stabilized by now, but from what we're seeing it doesn't yet seem like it has, so we want to plan somewhat conservatively," he added.

Last week, Meta began quietly cutting staff by reorganizing departments while giving 'reorganized' employees the ability to apply for other roles within the company, according to WSJ.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/the-cia-wants-to-bring-back-the-woolly-mammoth/ar-AA12p9Vz?ocid

A venture capital firm funded by the CIA has officially placed its bets on bringing back extinct species like the woolly mammoth and the thylacine, according to a public portfolio released this month and spotted by The Intercept.

The company is called In-Q-Tel, and its mission (according to its website) is to invest in technologies that bolster the United States’ national security. In-Q-Tel is over 20 years old, but only now have its taxpayer dollars been directed towards the genetically-engineered resurrection of extinct animals, or de-extinction.

In-Q-Tel has now added Colossal Biosciences to its public portfolio; in other words, the CIA has thrown taxpayer dollars behind de-extinction efforts. Colossal made headlines last year when it announced its intention to bring back the woolly mammoth, the appreciably hairier cousin of the elephant, which went extinct about 4,000 years ago. The company’s stated goal is to bring a mammoth calf into the world within five years.

Colossal followed up that statement this summer, when it announced it would also try to resurrect the thylacine, or Tasmanian tiger, a wolf-like marsupial that was driven to extinction by overhunting in the early 20th century.

Colossal argues that “rewilding” such extinct creatures will support local economies and help reverse the effects of climate change by having a net positive effect on carbon offset.

Critics of de-extinction raise several problems: they argue that the original habitats of most extinct animals no longer exist and that funding put towards de-extinction would be better invested in protecting species that are still around. Colossal and its supporters contend that funding the genomics research behind de-extinction and funding conservation work are not mutually exclusive.

Complicating matters on a conceptual level is that whichever animals are cobbled together from the genomes of extinct species and their nearest extant cousins wouldn’t be the same animals that disappeared years ago. They’d be proxy species: animals that look and might act like the ones that are gone.

Even if de-extinction goes over flawlessly—which is to say, without harming either the animals used to produce the proxy animals or the proxy animals themselves—behavioral characteristics can’t be extrapolated from genes. In other words, the animals won’t have a pre-existing population to teach them how to act like a mammoth or a thylacine.

A thylacine in captivity in the 1930s.

On its website, Colossal also states its intention to eventually resurrect the dodo bird, a flightless bird endemic to Mauritius that was hunted to extinction in the 17th century.

In a 2019 debate on de-extinction, Colossal co-founder George Church said that bringing back the mammoth is not just a vanity project, or something cooked up for the sake of recreating a cool animal. The research involved in mammoth de-extinction could mean helping cure the herpesvirus in Asian elephants. Church said that questions of human guilt about extinction are “almost irrelevant,” and that “the question is, do these species have something to offer us?”

Since In-Q-Tel’s mission is about investing in technology that strengthens national security, you may wonder if there are hairy proboscidean or carnivorous marsupial super-soldiers on the horizon. Oh, that was just me? The reality is much simpler—though only as simple as the actual feat of de-extinction.

In a blog post published to the company’s website on September 20, two executives emphasized the importance of understanding genomics and applying new computer power to biological datasets. “Strategically, it’s less about the mammoths and more about the capability,” they wrote.

Alongside Colossal, In-Q-Tel named Chi Botanic and Living Carbon (both work on genetically engineering plants) as companies doing useful research in complex bioengineering. Colossal is the only one of the three that In-Q-Tel has in its portfolio.

CIA officers may be able to profit off the research, though. The Intercept reported that members of In-Q-Tel’s board are permitted to sit on the boards of companies in which the firm invests. In 2016, the Wall Street Journal found that half of In-Q-Tel’s board members were connected to companies the firm had invested in, raising ethics concerns.

Even if the timeline is short, de-extinction is a long way off. It depends on what you expect out of the process. Something mammoth-like or thylacine-ish could well come out of Colossal’s work, now by way of the CIA’s funding. But whether you think the final result is akin to the work of Lazarus or Frankenstein is another matter.

In-Q-Tel ?

sounds familiar

don't think I've seen anything about this. Found on /pol/

McGREGOR, Texas (KWTX) - A top law enforcement official confirmed to KWTX that five people are dead, and a suspect in custody, following a shooting Thursday morning in McGregor.

The shooting happened just before 8 a.m. in the 900 block of Monroe. The official told KWTX an unidentified man shot his wife and her two children dead

There were also two additional victims found once authorities arrived on the scene from a home nearby. One woman’s body was found by the street while the other woman was found dead inside the nearby home.

The shooter was reportedly shot by McGregor police and taken to the hospital.

Authorities held a press conference around 12:15 but did not release much information other than saying a gun was used in the incident.

McGregor ISD has notified parents that counselors are on hand at various campuses. “In light of today’s events, and out of respect for the victims, all MISD activities, including the JH pep rally and all JH & sub-varsity games, have been canceled,” the district said in a statement.

Residents in that area near Monroe and West 8th Street first reported the gunfire at about 8 a.m. A construction worker in the area told KWTX he witnessed a wounded person lying on the ground, and a man firing rounds at another person moments before police arrived in the neighborhood. Authorities have not officially confirmed that information.

McGregor ISD immediately notified parents and staff about the incident and briefly locked down its campuses. “Rumors abound about what appears to be a horrific tragedy in our community,” McGregor ISD Superintendent James Lenamon said in a message to his community.

“There was a domestic disturbance that resulted in a shooting in McGregor this morning. As a result of that shooting, MISD ‘locked down’ for about 15 minutes. Once we received an all clear from MPD, the lockdown was lifted,” the superintendent further said.

Lenamon said grief counselors would be made available at district campuses if needed.

“This is a very fluid situation. Details are coming in rapidly and the gravity of the situation, and the required response, will change many times before the day is out. We will update you throughout the day as appropriate,” the superintendent said, “Rest assured, that the mental and physical well-being of every student and staff member is our top priority. We will be here today, and in the days to come, to meet the needs our your children.”

The Troy Independent School District announced on Thursday that all middle school, freshman, and junior varsity football games have been canceled “due to the tragic shooting in the McGregor community.”

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to all involved,” the district said.
