5 US Navy personnel face charges over F-35 fighter jet crash
The investigation into the unauthorized leak of an official video showing the crash of a F-35C fighter jet in the South China Sea last month has concluded with five navy personnel facing charges, the U.S. Navy said.
Cmdr. Zach Harrell, spokesperson for the commander of Naval Air Forces, confirmed to the RFA on Friday that “one U.S. navy ensign, one senior chief petty officer, and three chief petty officers have been charged under Article 92 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.”
A navy ensign is the lowest rank of junior officer while chief petty officer and senior chief petty officer are senior enlisted ranks.
The video of the so-called “ramp strike” by the fighter jet on the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier emerged earlier this month and was shared widely on social media.
The Pentagon afterwards confirmed that the shipboard video of the Jan. 24 crash was authentic. It shows footage, apparently originating from the pilot’s landing aid television (PLAT) and taken from two angles as the jet comes into land.
From the first one, the plane hits the deck then rotates and skids in flames. In the second, it crashes onto the deck before sliding off the flight deck and into the sea.
PLAT is installed on the carrier to assist pilots in making accurate landings.
In the video, yelling can be heard for the pilot to abort the landing attempt but within five seconds the F-35C drops into the South China Sea. The pilot safely ejected, the U.S. Navy said.
Another video clip and a photo circulating on social media shows the F-35C hitting the water. Nobody has been charged in connection with those as they are deemed personal recordings and not government property, according to an anonymous spokesman cited by USNI News.
Cmdr. Harrell did not disclose identities of the four senior enlisted sailors and the junior officer facing charges, adding that “there is an ongoing investigation into the crash.”

‘Non-judicial punishment’
Carl Schuster, a retired U.S. Navy captain, predicted the five personnel will likely receive a “captain's mast,” also known as an Article 15.
A captain’s mast is a non-judicial disciplinary hearing into minor offenses of the crew.
“The senior chief and chief petty officers are looking at a reduction in rank and forfeiture of pay. The ensign would receive a letter of reprimand, which will prevent him from being promoted, ensuring he is out of the Navy in 18 months,” Schuster said.
“They are on sea duty so they can't refuse a captain's mast but they can request court martial. However, a special court martial can inflict very severe punishment,” he added.
Meanwhile the spokesperson, Cmdr. Harrell, said the recovery from the crash took place swiftly and did not cause too much disruption to the carrier’s operations.
“We remain grateful to the highly trained sailors aboard USS Carl Vinson who immediately responded to ensure that the pilot was recovered from the water, all injured personnel were cared for, and flight deck was cleared and re-set for operations,” he told RFA.
“After a short pause in accordance with safety procedures, the rapid response from the crew enabled flight operations to resume with minimal impact to mission requirements.”
Still pending is the task of recovering the sunken jet from the depths of the South China Sea.
The U.S. Navy said in late January that it was “making recovery operations arrangements for the F-35C aircraft” but did not give further details. The Japanese coastguard also issued a navigation warning for mariners to beware of salvage operations in an area in the northern part of the South China Sea. The warning remains in effect.

This case in Harris County is one of only a handful of cases in young children nationwide, she said. “I understand that it’s a very scary thing and parents have concern.”

Just when we thought we finally got the hang of this whole wellness thing, a new study from Tufts University throws a curveball our way.
People reports that Tufts has released their Food Compass, a nutrient-profiling system that was developed by researchers at the university. The system uses a unique algorithm to assign foods a score between 1 and 100, with 100 being the most healthy.
Among the many observations made thanks to the Food Compass is that chocolate ice cream in a cone with nuts (score of 37) is healthier than a multigrain bagel with raisins (score of 19). And we can only imagine what the bagel's Food Compass score becomes once you slather it with cream cheese or butter.
Additionally, you might want to skip on that side of saltine crackers with your next bowl of soup. The crispy crackers scored a less than impressive 7. But if you are feeling peckish, your best bet is chocolate-covered almonds (score of 78) and air-popped, unbuttered popcorn (score of 70).
According to Dariush Mozaffarian, who led the study, the goal of the Food Compass is to simplify what healthy eating looks like. "Once you get beyond 'eat your veggies, avoid soda,' the public is pretty confused about how to identify healthier choices in the grocery store, cafeteria, and restaurant," Mozaffarian said, according to People. "Consumers, policy makers, and even industry are looking for simple tools to guide everyone toward healthier choices."

The term Primary Water was coined by the late Dr. Stephen Riess, the geophysicist who independently discovered its existence and pioneered its development, beginning in the 1930s until his death in December 1985.
“My discovery was put to a field test by locating and drilling many wells. The records to date from these tests is 70 producing wells out of 72 attempts, all drilled in hard rock, all located in distressed areas generally considered unproductive.” (Dr. Stephen
Riess, 1954)
Primary water is a little known renewable resource that originates deep within the earth. When conditions are right, oxygen combines with hydrogen to make new water.
This water is constantly being pushed up toward the surface under great pressure. The water finds its way towards the surface through fissures or faults. Depending on the geology, primary water can be accessed close to the surface, or even flow out as a
spring.
Primary water has never been a part of the hydrologic cycle until it finally arrives at the surface. Traditional hydrologic cycle water is finite and volumes fluctuate relative to available rain and snowmelt. Primary water is renewable and plentiful regardless of the
weather.

Ross Frazier: This is Escondido, Sunday the 22nd of September 1985 and we’re taking instruction from Dr. Stephen Riess, an eminent earth scientist at his home in Escondido, high on a rock promontory overlooking the valley and showing massive protrusions of granite boulders all around. Stephen Riess is a very controversial scientist and has extensive knowledge worldwide in the finding of water.
Turning to address Dr. Stephen Riess . . . Do you have any immediate finds in Escondido in the last three or four months?
Dr. Riess: Yes we’ve been successful in drilling some very good wells and it happens that both locations are on the highest parts in the county. A thousand feet higher than the pump stations for the water supply from the water resources department. And the cost of pumping it from there, these stations, the river water from Sacramento up into these reservoirs here is $93 an acre foot in power
bills and it is poor quality water. So the point now is that this water wells can produce the water for $20 pumping cost instead of $93 to lift it from the pipeline below up to the surface.
Ross Frazier: And with no carrying of silt or anything of that nature.
Dr. Riess: No. It’s clean water.
Ross Frazier: The water here is very pure water, isn’t it?
Dr. Riess: It’s exceptionally good. It’s usually about one-third of the mineral content of the prevailing Colorado River water.
Ross Frazier: This is because you’re extracting primary water from very deep.
Dr. Riess: This is because it is primary water obtained below the crust and is in the non-oxidizing zone.
Ross Frazier: So this is not being oxidized?
Dr. Riess: No.
Ross Frazier: And it is not picking up contaminants.
Dr. Riess: It does not dissolve or pick up any contaminants and therefore it is superior water. It does not need any more cleaning or pre-treatment for the distribution system.
Ross Frazier: And you don’t have any, or very little if any, radiation?
Dr. Riess: Well, there may be fast dissolving radon which is about one day lifetime in the water in the reservoir.
Ross Frazier: And radon will not be a really factor here.
Dr. Riess: No, it is no factor at all.
Ross Frazier: Because it’s decay is so rapid.
Dr. Riess: Right now. And in itself is not very serious.
Ross Frazier: It wouldn’t be anywhere near the contaminants that could be picked up as a result of surface testing of nuclear weapons.
Dr. Riess: Naturally, that is the point. When they are talking about claiming waters, bad waters, which are already bad at the origin from the faucet and then going to the industrial and whatever uses there are and then go through the sewage lines, the retreating is absolute insanity.
Ross Frazier: It is not necessary because . . .
Dr. Riess: It’s ridiculous. An article that I got in the paper here before me today is talking about treating two hundred million gallons of sewage for re-use. Now who in the Devil would want to use sewage water again?
Ross Frazier: It’s unnecessary.
Dr. Riess: Absolutely unnecessary.

A group of 2000+ journalists and lawyers are suing the CIA and its former director Mike Pompeo, claiming the intelligence agency spied on them when they visited WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange at Ecuador's embassy in London.
Lawyers for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange sued the US Central Intelligence Agency and its former director Mike Pompeo on Monday, alleging it recorded their conversations and copied data from their phones and computers.
The attorneys, along with two journalists joining the suit, are Americans and allege that the CIA violated their US constitutional protections for confidential discussions with Mr Assange, who is Australian.
They said the CIA worked with a security firm contracted by the Ecuadoran embassy in London, where Mr Assange was living at the time, to spy on the WikiLeaks founder, his lawyers, journalists and others he met with.
'He's not well': Julian Assange's family 'living in fear' he won't survive extradition processMr Assange is facing extradition from Britain to the US, where he is charged with violating the US Espionage Act by publishing US military and diplomatic files in 2010 related to the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.
Robert Boyle, a New York attorney representing the plaintiffs in the lawsuit, said the alleged spying on Mr Assange's attorneys means the WikiLeaks founder's right to a fair trial has "now been tainted, if not destroyed."
"The recording of meetings with friends, with lawyers and the copying of his attorneys' and friends' digital information taints the criminal prosecution because now the government knows the contents of those communications," Mr Boyle told reporters.
"There should be sanctions, even up to dismissal of those charges, or withdrawal of an extradition request in response to these blatantly unconstitutional activities," he said.
The suit was filed by attorneys Margaret Ratner Kunstler and Deborah Hrbek, and journalists Charles Glass and John Goetz.
They all visited Mr Assange while he was living inside the Ecuadoran embassy in London under political asylum, since withdrawn.
The suit named the CIA, former CIA director and former US secretary of state Mr Pompeo, and the security firm Undercover Global and its chief executive David Morales Guillen.

It said Undercover Global, which had a security contract with the embassy, swept information on their electronic devices, including communications with Mr Assange, and provided it to the CIA.
In addition it placed microphones around the embassy and sent recordings, as well as footage from security cameras, to the CIA, the suit alleges.
This, the attorneys said, violated privacy protections for US citizens.
Mr Assange is awaiting a ruling on his appeal of the British extradition order to the United States.
The charges he faces could bring a sentence of up to 175 years in prison.

Mike Pompeo 'approved' the spying, suit claims
The suit said that Spain-based Undercover Global was recruited to work with the CIA in 2017 by officials from the Las Vegas Sands casino group.
Las Vegas Sands was at the time controlled by the late tycoon Sheldon Adelson, a powerful conservative backer of the Republican Party who, the suit said, "had cooperated with the CIA on similar matters in the past."
The suit said that while Undercover Global controlled security at the embassy, each visitor had to leave their electronic devices with a guard before seeing Mr Assange.
"The information contained on the plaintiff’s devices was copied and, ultimately, given to the CIA," they said.
"Defendant Pompeo was aware of and approved the copying of information contained on plaintiffs’ mobile electronic devices and the surreptitious audio monitoring of their meetings with Assange," the suit alleged.
It said the defendants became aware of the spying only when the Spanish newspaper El Pais reported in September 2019 that Morales and Undercover Global were under criminal investigation in Spain.
El Pais revealed information on the London operations that had previously been sealed in the case.

I am forcibly sickened by what I have seen happen in Pinal County when it comes to the 2022 primary election. Absolute incompetence when it came to the operations of the election and the assumption that firing one or two people would rectify the situation. An untold number of people were denied the right to vote. The election was not completed. I filed an injunction in an effort to prevent it from being canvassed. Instead of granting an emergency injunction, she scheduled the hearing two days after the deadline to canvass. Further, I served them Friday morning at 8am with the lawsuit and the delivery of that service was delayed until after they had their meeting to canvass, four days before their deadline to do it. I was also told by one of the supervisors that they were advised to not discuss my lawsuit during their meeting because they hadn’t been served yet.
I would say it this time for the federal government to get involved, but we all know what that looks like.

I dug a bit into the code to see how the password, message, and image are encoded and decoded. Not sure how useful it is, seemed reasonably secure. It might be possible to brute force the last 1/3 of the password, since that's used to embed the encrypted message into the image, and I think it has a known text prefix "–* PK v 1.0 REQUIRES PASSWORD –*". The first 2/3 are hashed and used to encrypt the message.
