WASHINGTON—The CIA drone strike that killed al Qaeda’s leader over the weekend demonstrates potent U.S. capabilities to target individual terror chieftains, but leaves unanswered the question of whether Washington can remotely thwart plots in Afghanistan before they become a threat.
Senior U.S. officials said that Ayman al-Zawahiri, who was killed in a strike in Kabul on Sunday morning by Hellfire missiles fired from a drone, wasn’t involved in planning al Qaeda terror operations at the time of his death, but rather offered guidance to the group and its many affiliates.

The Senate voted 86-11 on Tuesday to approve the PACT Act.
The bill increases healthcare funding and access for military veterans.
All 11 votes against the measure came from Republicans.
Eleven Republican senators voted Tuesday against a bipartisan measure, the PACT Act, that is designed to help veterans who were exposed to toxic chemicals while deployed abroad.
The bill was approved in the Senate by a vote of 86-11 a week after 41 Republicans elected to stall the final passage of the measure, citing concerns over its cost. Twenty-five Republicans who voted against the bill last week voted for a nearly identical version of the legislation in June.
The effort to block the legislation caused an uproar among veterans groups, with critics arguing that aid for veterans was being held hostage over GOP opposition to another measure, the Inflation Reduction Act, which includes significant amount of money to combat climate change and lower health care costs.

Arizona’s three largest County Primary Elections are rife with serious irregularities that have been occurring all day long, sparking even more concern for election integrity.
The Gateway Pundit reported earlier today on the massive voter concerns in Maricopa County.
The moment that polls opened this morning, machines weren’t working, and some voters were unable to get a ballot right away.
Across the State, worries also continue to mount over the type of pen Arizona elections workers are pushing voters to use on election day. We reported that the pens are possibly causing overvoting or vote changing.
One Maricopa County voter also told The Gateway Pundit,
When I put my ballot into the machine in Phoenix, the poll worker told me to wait for a green checkmark, but then told me to hit the red ‘return’ button and pull the ballot all the way out. When I asked if that was normal she told me that it’s been happening all day and that I needed to flip the ballot over and insert it upside-down with the blank side up. She said ‘as long as we get the green checkmark, we know it’s been read properly.’ I do not know if my upsde-down ballot was actually counted properly.
Pinal County also saw serious irregularities before and during Election Day.
In Pinal, 63,000 incorrectly printed mail-in ballots were sent out and delivered to voters just weeks before the election. The fact that this happened already proves that this election is compromised to its core.
On Election Day, Pinal County poll workers were then busted by a voter, illegally helping voters make choices on their ballots. We discovered that they were trained to do this, as well as give Republican ballots to Democratic voters.

Reps. Seth Moulton (D-MA) and Veronica Escobar (D-TX) are pushing the “Mass Shooter Prosecution Act,” which would open mass shooters and their “support networks” up to terrorism charges in the event the shooters use guns Democrats typically label “assault weapons.”
Yahoo News quoted Moulton addressing mass shooters, saying, “They are terrorists and they should be prosecuted as terrorists.”
He added, “[The bill] also allows prosecutors to go after the material support networks. Networks that provide aid, perhaps its guidance, instructions maps. Whatever helps these attackers carry out these vicious assaults.”
Escobar said, “My community of El Paso was forever changed by the actions of a domestic terrorist fueled by white supremacy theories. With this legislation, we’re giving law enforcement the tools they need to follow through with investigations into terrorist networks and any individual responsible for attacks against our communities.”
The text of the “Mass Shooter Prosecution Act” defines a mass shooter as “whoever kills 3 or more people in a single incident using a machinegun or a covered semiautomatic weapon in a circumstance described in subsection (b).”
The semiautomatic weapons that qualify under the heading of “mass shooting” are the same types of weapons House Democrats voted to ban last week. Firearms outside those apparently fall outside the parameters of proposed terrorism charges.
The punishment for those who meet the definition of “mass shooter” is imprisonment for “any term of years or for life. ”

The Valley of Hinnom is first mentioned in the Hebrew Bible as part of the border between the tribes of Judah and Benjamin (Joshua 15:8). During the late First Temple period, it was the site of the Tophet, where some of the kings of Judah had sacrificed their children by fire (Jeremiah 7:31).
The Valley of Hinnom is the Modern Hebrew name for the valley surrounding the Old City of Jerusalem and the adjacent Mount Zion from the west and south.
The tophet is eventually destroyed by king Josiah, although mentions by the prophets Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Isaiah suggest that the practices associated with the tophet may have persisted.
Most scholars agree that the ritual performed at the tophet was child sacrifice, and they connect it to similar episodes throughout the Bible and recorded in Phoenicia (whose inhabitants were referred to as Canaanites in the Bible) and Carthage by Hellenistic sources. There is disagreement about whether the sacrifices were offered to a god named "Moloch". Based on Phoenician and Carthaginian inscriptions, a growing number of scholars believe that the word moloch refers to the type of sacrifice rather than a deity. There is currently a dispute as to whether these sacrifices were dedicated to Yahweh rather than a foreign deity.
However, while scholars recognize the existence of an underworld deity called "M-l-k" with various vocalizations (e.g. Molech, Milcom)

Adelaide man jailed and 15 young victims rescued after international child abuse investigation
Fifteen young victims have been rescued, a South Australian man jailed and five people arrested overseas, following an international investigation into the sexual abuse of children.
The Adelaide man, 68, who paid for children to be sexually abused while he watched on webcam, was sentenced to more than 15 years’ imprisonment by the District Court of South Australia today (3 August 2022).
He had pleaded guilty in February 2021 to 50 offences, which included charges relating to viewing, remotely instructing and recording the sexual abuse of children on 55 occasions between March 2018 and January 2020. Police believe the youngest child was aged just three when they were first abused.
The man was prosecuted in Australia, and the victims and alleged facilitators identified in the Philippines as a result of an investigation by the Australian Federal Police, South Australia Police (SAPol), Australian Border Force (ABF), the Philippine National Police (PNP) and Philippine National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
The case was also the first time that the AFP-led Criminal Assets Confiscation Taskforce (CACT) sought to confiscate the home of a person charged with child sex offences pursuant to Commonwealth proceeds of crime and confiscation laws. The man was not accused of profiting from his crimes, but of allegedly using his property as an instrument of crime to commit serious offences.
In November 2020 and May 2021, the AFP sought, and obtained, Supreme Court of South Australia restraining orders under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 in relation to the man’s unencumbered property, which was where many of his internet-based offences were alleged to have taken place.
The confiscation proceedings were settled in late 2021, resulting in the man paying the Commonwealth* $165,000 - which was half of what his home was worth, as assessed by an independent valuation.
The Australian criminal investigation was launched in February 2020 after ABF officers examined the man’s baggage when he arrived in Melbourne on a flight from overseas.
They allegedly found child abuse material on his mobile phone and called in the AFP.
The man was charged over the illegal content and the case was allocated to the South Australia Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team (SA JACET), the specialist taskforce comprising AFP and SA Police officers who investigate child exploitation offences in South Australia.
A digital forensic examination of the man’s data storage devices uncovered horrific footage of sexual acts involving children.
Police found more than 55,000 images and videos of child abuse material on his devices.
Further investigations by SA JACET found the man communicated with adult ‘facilitators’ in the Philippines to procure several children for his depraved requests. The children were forced to perform sexually explicit acts on camera which he watched live from his suburban Adelaide home.
SA JACET arrested and charged the man with additional offences in April 2020.

The hall-of-fame voice of the Los Angeles Dodgers died Tuesday.
The news of Scully’s death comes a little over a year after his wife Sandra died from her battle with ALS. Back on February 2021, Scully had also mourned the death of his longtime friend and fellow Dodgers legend Tommy Lasorda.
"I want to express my gratitude for all your kind messages about my beloved Sandi. And with the loss of my dear friend Tommy, it's been quite a lot to bear," Scully said on social media in 2021.
Dodgers fans and baseball fans across the world remember Scully's storytelling during his 67-year run as the voice of Los Angeles baseball.
The New York native’s journey with the Dodgers began in 1950 when the team played their home games in Brooklyn. Scully followed the Dodgers in the team’s move to Los Angeles in 1958.
Many Angelenos remember Scully for his iconic call of Game 1 of the 1988 World Series. Scully provided a memorable play-by-play call of injured Dodgers outfielder Kirk Gibson limping way to the batters box before delivering a two-run walkoff home run to give Los Angeles a 5-4 win over the heavily-favored Oakland Athletics.
"In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened," Scully said on-air seconds after Gibson’s home run.
In addition to calling Dodgers games, Scully occasionally called NFL games PGA Tour golf. He also called nationally-televised sporting events for both CBS and NBC on top of calling every Dodgers game through 2016.
Scully’s illustrious career in the broadcast booth landed him in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982 and in 2016, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - An unborn child with a detectable heartbeat is now eligible for the Georgia individual income tax dependent exemption.
According to the Georgia Department of Revenue, the 11th Circuit’s ruling on HB 481, or the Heartbeat Law, made the amendment effective on July 20, 2022.
Therefore, a taxpayer may claim a dependent personal exemption in the amount of $3,000 for Tax Year 2022 for an unborn child with a detectable heartbeat at any time on or after July 20, 2022, and through December 31, 2022.
The department states that medical records and other documentation will likely be required to support the dependent deduction.

Ukraine-related embargo targets Skolkovo and Russian tech sector in general
Washington on Tuesday announced a new round of embargoes targeting Russia’s finance and technology sectors, in particular the semiconductor industry. Among the entities sanctioned by the State Department are the Skolkovo technology park outside Moscow – Russia’s equivalent of Silicon Valley – and MMK, one of the world’s largest steel producers.
The Skolkovo Foundation, Technopark Skolkovo LLC and the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) found themselves blacklisted for “operating or having operated in the technology sector of the Russian Federation economy.”
Also targeted by the State Department sanctions was the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MFTI), for “operating or having operated in the defense and related materiel sector,” specifically developing drones for use by the Russian military.
The Treasury Department said the new US sanctions were targeting “Kremlin-connected elites, a major multinational company, and a sanctions evasion operation, as well as one yacht.” The embargoed “elites” and businesses operate in “economic sectors that generate substantial revenue for the Russian regime,” the Treasury said.
The sanctioned yacht is Alfa Nero, a Cayman Islands-flagged ship belonging to the newly sanctioned Andrey Guryev. He is the founder of PhosAgro, the leading Russian manufacturer of chemical fertilizer. The company itself has not been sanctioned, the Treasury hastened to note.
Alfa Nero “has reportedly shut off its location tracking hardware in order to avoid seizure,”the US government added.

MMK’s finance division and the Turkish-based MMK Metalurji subsidiary were also embargoed. Americans who have open business with MMK have until September 1 to wrap it up, and until October 3 to divest any debts. The deadline for dealing with the Turkish company is January 31, 2023.
The most notable name on the list of “elites”allegedly close to the Kremlin is Alina Kabaeva. The retired rhythmic gymnast and former lawmaker was sanctioned for having been a government official, having a “close relationship” to President Vladimir Putin, and being the head of the National Media Group, “a pro-Kremlin empire of television, radio, and print organizations.”
Back in 2015, British tabloids spread the rumor that Kabaeva was Putin’s secret lover, after the Russian president was not seen in publicfor over a week – having been on holiday.
