Illinois Governor Invested In Company With $2.6 Billion In State Contracts

Amid the national debate over whether members of Congress should be able to trade stock, the governor of Illinois is demonstrating how prevalent conflicts of interest are for elected officials who own securities.

In 2020, Gov. JB Pritzker’s trust bought stock in the health insurance company Centene Corp. That same year, Illinois gave $2.6 billion worth of Medicaid contracts to Centene Corp.

An investigation by the Better Government Association, a nonprofit Illinois watchdog, uncovered these interesting investments. Even though Pritzker’s investments are in a blind trust, which means that Pritzker is not privy to investment decisions, they demonstrate why blind trusts can’t prevent conflicts of interest.

Each year, Pritzker receives a copy of his current investments from his fund managers, which have the potential to influence the state contracting process.

Pritzker, a member of the family that owns the Hyatt Hotel dynasty, has a net worth of $3.6 billion, according to Forbes.

During his 2018 campaign, he pledged to purge his investment portfolio of companies that held state contracts, according to the report.

However, in 2020, his portfolio managers invested in Centene Corp., one of Illinois’ largest Medicaid contractors, according to the association’s report. While not illegal, the association’s experts say Pritzker could have instructed his trust managers not to invest in state contractors to eliminate the potential for a conflict of interest.

Pritzker and his trust managers refuse to disclose how much the investments are worth nor when the investments were made. All that has been disclosed so far is that his stake in Centene Corp is worth over $5,000, according to his Statement of Economic Interest form filed with the state.

These investments should serve as a wake-up call for investment reform for public officials. Public servants should be transparent when it comes to investing.

Arab Coalition Command in Yemen Announces Suspension of Military Operations - State Media

The Yemeni armed opposition movement Ansar Allah, also known as the Houthis, announced on Sunday a three-day cessation of hostilities against Saudi Arabia and its coalition. The news comes as this month marks the seventh anniversary of the war, which has caused one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.

The Saudi Arabian-led coalition said on Tuesday it would cease hostilities in Yemen during inter-Yemeni talks in Riyadh, that will be held on Wednesday, according to the Saudi news agency SPA.

The alliance said that suspending military operations is aimed at creating “appropriate conditions” for peace talks to succeed.

“We announce the cessation of military operations inside Yemen to make the consultations successful and create a positive environment for peacemaking during the month of Ramadan, at the invitation of His Excellency the Secretary-General of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf,” the statement says.

Earlier in the month, the warring sides made efforts to initiate peace talks amid continuing hostilities. Saudi Arabia has offered to hold the meeting in Riyadh, ready to guarantee the inviolability of the Houthi delegation. Yemeni President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi has also agreed to take part in the talks, which would be the first attempt to arrange a direct meeting between the leaders of both sides of the Yemeni civil war.

The Houthi representatives, so far, have not officially confirmed their participation in the talks, and have increased their shelling of Saudi territories. At the end of the last week, they carried out a massive attack on energy facilities in the kingdom.

The negotiations are expected to be held between March 29 and April 7 and resemble a conference. The parties plan to discuss a number of issues to tackle the political crisis, including the formation of a new Yemeni government and the reconstruction of war-affected areas. In addition, participants will discuss the opening of humanitarian corridors from northern Yemen, which has been in a transport blockade for more than seven years.

A number of Arabic media outlets have suggested that the negotiations may be the first step towards ending the war.

SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (AP) — David Frodsham was a top civilian commander at a U.S. air base in Afghanistan when he “jokingly” asked an IT technician for access to YouPorn, the video-sharing pornographic website.

During his time in the war zone, Frodsham told one woman that he hired her because he “wanted to be surrounded by pretty women,” and routinely called others “honey,” “babe,” and “cougar” before he was ordered home after the military verified multiple allegations of sexual harassment.

“I would not recommend placing him back into a position of authority but rather pursuing disciplinary actions at his home station,” wrote one commanding officer when recommending that the Army order Frodsham to leave his post at Bagram Airfield and return to Fort Huachuca, a major Army installation in Arizona, according to a U.S. Army investigative file obtained by The Associated Press.

But when Frodsham returned to his home station in fall 2015, he rejoined the Network Enterprise Technology Command, the Army’s information technology service provider, where he had served as director of personnel for a global command of 15,000 soldiers and civilians, according to his Army resume.

By spring of the following year, he was arrested in Arizona for leading a child sex abuse ring that included an Army sergeant who was posting child pornography to the internet. Among the victims was one of Frodsham’s adopted sons

Frodsham pleaded guilty to sex abuse charges in 2016 and is serving a 17-year sentence. But records reviewed by the AP show that the U.S. Army and the state of Arizona missed or ignored multiple red flags over more than a decade, which allowed Frodsham to allegedly abuse his adopted son and other children for years, all the while putting national security at risk.

The state permitted Frodsham and his wife, Barbara, to foster, adopt and retain custody of their many children despite nearly 20 complaints, and attempted complaints, of abuse, neglect, maltreatment and licensing violations. Meanwhile, the Army gave Frodsham security clearances and sensitive jobs at a time when his illicit sexual practices made him vulnerable to blackmail.

“He would have been an obvious target of foreign intelligence services because of his role and his location,” said Frank Figliuzzi, the former assistant director of counterintelligence for the FBI. “Fort Huachuca is one of the more sensitive installations in the continental United States. People with security issues should not be there.” In addition to NETCOM, where Frodsham worked, Fort Huachuca is home to the Army’s Intelligence and Security Command, according to its website.

Public relations officials at Fort Huachuca confirmed that Frodsham was a program manager for NETCOM before he was arrested on child sex abuse charges. They declined to say whether Frodsham was disciplined after returning from Afghanistan, or whether the Army ever considered him a security risk.

NFL Orders Teams To Hire Minority Or Female Offensive Assistant Coaches For 2022 Season

The NFL will require every team to hire a minority or female offensive assistant coach for the 2022 season in an effort to ensure more opportunities for diverse candidates.

The policy was adopted by NFL owners during their annual meeting on March 28 and requires all 32 NFL teams to hire an offensive assistant coach who is “a female or a member of an ethnic or racial minority,” regardless of whether or not the team already has a coach who satisfies those requirements among their staff.

It is unclear exactly when the policy goes into effect.

According to the NFL, the individual hired will “receive a one-year contract and work closely with the head coach and offensive staff to gain experience.”

Teams will receive funding toward the coach’s salary for up to two years from a league-wide fund.

“In recent years, head coaches have predominantly had offensive backgrounds. We believe this resolution will assist greatly in continuing to source and identify diverse candidates earlier in their career, providing pipeline depth and furthering developing the diverse offensive pipeline,” the updated NFL policy reads.

The policy adopted Monday is an adjustment to the Rooney Rule adopted by the National Football League in 2003 which requires league teams to interview ethnic-minority candidates for head coaching and senior football operation vacancies.

That rule was adopted based on recommendations by the league’s Workplace Diversity Committee in an attempt to “develop a deep, sustainable talent pool at all levels of the organization” and “increase the number of minorities hired in head coach, general manager, and executive positions,” according to the NFL.

The Rooney Rule has regularly been updated and expanded since it went into effect.

Top suspect in Russian opposition murder wounded in Ukraine

Chechen rumored to be main suspect in killing of liberal Russian politician is recovering in hospital

Ruslan Geremeev, a Chechen fighter long suspected of involvement in the 2015 killing of liberal politician Boris Nemtsov, has been wounded during the fighting in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, but is recovering in hospital, the head of the Chechen Republic Ramzan Kadyrov revealed on Tuesday.

It was Geremeev’s unit that put up the Chechen flag on the Mariupol city hall last week, Kadyrov said on his Telegram account. The Chechen commander was wounded “during the continuing fighting for the city” and ended up in the hospital.

“On my way to Mariupol I visited my dear brother and personally saw that he was not in mortal danger. He is on the mend and will soon be back in the ranks,” Kadyrov added, calling Geremeev “a real soldier and true patriot.”

Geremeev was never formally accused of involvement in the February 2015 death of Nemtsov, a liberal politician who was gunned down in Moscow while walking along the river with his Ukrainian girlfriend. Russian investigators sought to interview him in relation to Nemtsov’s murder, which a Moscow court in June 2017 ruled had been a contract killing.

Moscow reveals number of foreign mercenaries killed in Ukraine

Five Chechens were sentenced to prison for carrying out the hit, but the person who commissioned it was never identified. The US blamed Geremeev for Nemtsov’s death and placed him on the sanctions list in 2019, offering no evidence of his involvement.

Chechen units have taken part in the fighting for Mariupol, a coastal city in southeastern Ukraine which has long been held by “Azov,” the Ukrainian regiment openly using Nazi insignia.

Moscow reveals number of foreign mercenaries killed in Ukraine

Russian forces are continuing their efforts to track down and eliminate soldiers of fortune, the defense minister has said

The Russian military has killed some 600 foreign mercenaries during its military operation in Ukraine, while hundreds more have fled the country, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu has stated.

The number of non-Ukrainian combatants fighting on the side of Kiev has recently been reduced via strikes launched against them with high-precision munitions, resulting in fatalities, Shoigu said during a video conference on Tuesday.

“Over the past two weeks, over 500 mercenaries have left the country and about 600 more have been eliminated,” the minister said, adding that the Russian military was “continuing its targeted efforts aimed at tracking down and destroying them.”

Speaking about the military operation in general, Shoigu said its primary aim in the first stage had been fulfilled, with “significant damage being delivered to the Ukrainian Army.”

Criteria for foreign fighters in Ukraine named

This allowed the Russian forces to focus next on liberating the breakaway Donbass republics of Donetsk and Lugansk.

Russia has carried out several strikes on bases hosting soldiers of fortune in Ukraine since the start of the campaign.

An attack on the Yavoriv range in the western Lvov region in mid-March left up to 180 foreign fighters dead, according to the Defense Ministry, although Ukraine reported a much less significant death toll. Another strike targeted a Ukrainian Special Operations Forces training center in the northern Zhytomyr region, where more than 100 Ukrainian troops and foreign fighters were killed.

Moscow sent its troops into Ukraine in late February, following a seven-year standoff over Kiev’s failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements, and Russia’s eventual recognition of the republics of Donetsk and Lugansk. The German- and French-brokered protocols had been designed to regularize the status of those regions within the Ukrainian state.

UK reveals conditions for lifting Russia sanctions

It will take more than a ceasefire in Ukraine for London to lift its sanctions against Russia, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson told his cabinet on Tuesday, insisting that Moscow must fully alter its policy towards its neighbor.

Pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin “must be increased both through further economic measures and providing military aid to ensure Russia changes course completely,” Johnson told his ministers, according to his spokesman.

Foreign Minister Liz Truss had told the Sunday Telegraph earlier this week that sanctions “should only come off with a full ceasefire and withdrawal, but also commitments that there will be no further aggression.”

Johnson’s comments came as Russian and Ukrainian negotiators met in Turkey to discuss the “practical phase” of talks, according to Russian Deputy Minister of Defense Alexander Fomin. He told reporters that the parties are preparing an agreement on the “neutrality and non-nuclear status of Ukraine” and providing Kiev security guarantees in return.

As a sign of good faith, Russia intends to “drastically” de-escalate military activity near Kiev and Chernihiv in northern Ukraine, Fomin also announced. However, there was no talk of a ceasefire of any kind.

London and Washington have led the way in imposing a wide-ranging embargo on Russian goods, services, property, bank reserves, transactions, individuals, and government officials.

Though the US insists that “the world” has sanctioned Russia, the embargo has been limited to Washington’s NATO allies, plus Australia, Japan, and South Korea.

US Top Commander In Europe Forced To Rebut Latest Biden Remarks

In yet another awkward contradiction out of this US administration concerning Ukraine, which at this point seems to come almost daily, the head of US European Command was forced to issue a contrary explanation after Biden on Monday said multiple times that US forces are "helping train" Ukrainian troops in Poland.

This triggered a rebuttal of the US Commander-in-Chief from Gen. Tod Wolters, who also serves as NATO’s supreme allied commander in Europe. On Tuesday Gen. Wolters denied that the US is currently training Ukraine forces in Poland.

"I do not believe that we are in the process of currently training military forces from Ukraine in Poland," the top general told a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing.

He said further according to The Hill when pressed on Biden's series of statements, which the White House had later sought to downplay as gaffes and merely lacking in nuance:

“There are liaisons that are there that are being given advice,” Wolters told Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), without elaborating further. "And that's different than [what] I think you're referring to with respect training.”

But again, as we detailed earlier, Biden had actually asserted that American forces were training Ukrainians in Poland multiple times, strongly suggesting this was anything but "confusion" or a mere gaffe on the president's part...

National security adviser Jake Sullivan previously stated that the US currently has 10,500 troops in Poland, some of which the president visited over the weekend. Across Europe, Washington has bolstered its presence to the tune of 100,000 total troops. The U.S. has 10,500 troops in Poland as part of the 100,000 total that it has stationed across Europe, told reporters.

When initially asked Monday about this "training the Ukrainian troops" remark, Biden offered the dubious explanation that he was actually referencing he himself "being with and talking with the Ukrainian troops who are in Poland."

But it remains that not only his own advisers have had to offer repeat corrections, but now even the US head of European Command in Senate testimony. This goes beyond an awkward situation, but even into the realm of dangerous, given many of these walked-back remarks serve as a huge provocation to Russia (especially Saturday's regime change statement fiasco from Warsaw).

Last January, Stew Peters decided to roll out the thesis that I have personal responsibility for the morbidity and mortality associated with the COVID-19 mRNA vaccines consequent to my pioneering work in developing the ideas and reduction to practice of using synthetic mRNA as a transient “gene therapy” method, with the entry level application being for vaccine purposes. The core idea captured in the original nine patents which stem from my work between 1987 and 1989 was that there are multiple key problems with the idea of permanent “gene therapy” as originally envisioned by Richard Roblin, PhD and academic Pediatrician Dr. Theodore Friedman in 1972. The modern embodiment of this concept can be found in the many writings from the WEF and others concerning “Transhumanism” and use of CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing technology. To really understand all of this requires a brief journey through the history and logic of “gene therapy”.

The January 2015 UC San Diego News center piece entitled “Friedman Recognized for Pioneering Gene Therapy Research: School of Medicine professor receives prestigious Japan Prize” nicely summarizes the underlying logic of “Gene Therapy” as envisioned by Friedman and Roblin.

“Though posed as a question, Friedmann and Roblin firmly believed the answer was yes, citing emergent thinking, new studies and growing data that suggested “good DNA” could be used to replace defective DNA in people with inherited conditions.

“In our view,” they wrote, “gene therapy may ameliorate some human genetic diseases in the future. For this reason, we believe that research directed at the development of techniques for gene therapy should continue.”

It is time to face reality.

If Britain is the future of the coronavirus in highly mRNA vaccinated countries, the future is bleak.

Britain authorized Pfizer’s mRNA Covid vaccine even before the United States. It vaccinated against Covid faster than any other advanced country except Israel.

The results have been worse than unpromising.

Last week, Chris Whitty, England’s chief medical officer, warned the coronavirus would remain a public health threat “for the rest of our lives.” This assessment is far grimmer than any that American officials have made, at least publicly. But Britain is now facing yet another wave of Covid infections and deaths - its fourth, or fifth, or sixth, depending on who’s counting.

Dismissing Whitty as a fearmonger would be easy. In much of 2020 and 2021, he pushed lockdowns and offered regular predictions of doom.

But even a stopped hysteric can be right twice a day. And Whitty’s assessment is actually much darker than one he made in mid-December - when he predicted that “each six months [going forward] will be better than the last six months.”

When a suicide bomber attacked Kabul International Airport in August last year, the death and destruction was overwhelming: The violence left 183 people dead, including 13 U.S. soldiers.

This kind of mass casualty event can be particularly daunting for field workers. Hundreds of people need care, the hospitals nearby have limited room, and decisions on who gets care first and who can wait need to be made quickly. Often, the answer isn’t clear, and people disagree.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) – the innovation arm of the U.S. military – is aiming to answer these thorny questions by outsourcing the decision-making process to artificial intelligence. Through a new program, called In the Moment, it wants to develop technology that would make quick decisions in stressful situations using algorithms and data, arguing that removing human biases may save lives, according to details from the program’s launch this month.

Though the program is in its infancy, it comes as other countries try to update a centuries-old system of medical triage, and as the U.S. military increasingly leans on technology to limit human error in war. But the solution raises red flags among some experts and ethicists who wonder if AI should be involved when lives are at stake.

“AI is great at counting things,” Sally A. Applin, a research fellow and consultant who studies the intersection between people, algorithms and ethics, said in reference to the DARPA program. “But I think it could set a precedent by which the decision for someone’s life is put in the hands of a machine.”

Founded in 1958 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, DARPA is among the most influential organizations in technology research, spawning projects that have played a role in numerous innovations, including the Internet, GPS, weather satellites and, more recently, Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine.

But its history with AI has mirrored the field’s ups and downs. In 1960s, the agency made advances in natural language processing, and getting computers to play games such as chess. During the 1970s and 1980s, progress stalled, notably due to the limits in computing power.

Since the 2000s, as graphics cards have improved, computing power has become cheaper and cloud computing has boomed, the agency has seen a resurgence in using artificial intelligence for military applications. In 2018, it dedicated $2 billion, through a program called AI Next, to incorporate AI in over 60 defense projects, signifying how central the science could be for future fighters.

“DARPA envisions a future in which machines are more than just tools,” the agency said in announcing the AI Next program. “The machines DARPA envisions will function more as colleagues than as tools.”

Amid pushes for a fourth dose of COVID-19 vaccines, the World Health Organization has said it is looking into reports of hearing problems stemming from the vaccines.

According to NBC News, the WHO has reported 367 cases of tinnitus among people who had received a COVID-19 vaccine.

The condition is characterized by ringing in the ears, and it usually occurred within one day of the vaccine being administered to patients who reported it.

Patients who experienced this side effect ranged in age from 19 to 91, NBC reported. Almost 75 percent of those who reported the condition were women.

In addition to the cases of tinnitus, the WHO reported 164 people identified new hearing loss after receiving the vaccine as of Feb. 22.

“A recent signal detection activity at the Uppsala Monitoring Centre (UMC) identified hearing loss (including sudden cases) and tinnitus following COVID-19 vaccination as a preliminary signal to be further assessed,” the WHO wrote in a newsletter.

Some of the patients who experienced these symptoms also reported “headache, dizziness and nausea,” the WHO said.

NBC said reports of tinnitus came from 27 different countries including Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States.

While some patients recovered quickly, others had to undergo “steroid treatment” to address the side effects, the newsletter said.

In addition, multiple patients described their tinnitus after vaccination as “unrelenting and life-altering for months,” NBC reported.

The WHO said it needed to continue monitoring reports of these side effects to make a final determination on next steps.

“Awareness of this possible link may help healthcare professionals and those vaccinated to monitor symptoms and seek care, as appropriate,” the newsletter said.

“As there is still only limited data in the literature providing evidence for this link, further monitoring is required.”

This report comes as the Food and Drug Administration authorized a fourth dose of the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines on Tuesday.

Last week, Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen H. Hicks signed the implementation plan for Joint All Domain Command and Control, or JADC2. It's the final step needed before moving forward on delivering JADC2 capabilities to the warfighter, which will bring a better way to sense, make sense of and act on the volumes of information generated into today's joint, all-domain warfighting environment.

The finalized and approved implementation plan serves as the critical final step needed before building out JADC2 capabilities, said Marine Lt. Gen. Dennis A. Crall, who serves as the director of command, control, communications and computers/cyber as well as chief information officer on the Joint Staff.

"[It's] the seminal document that we've been waiting for — and it's been difficult for the reasons you might expect, it's so comprehensive," Crall said during a virtual briefing today at the Pentagon.

Crall said the implementation plan is important because it defines who will do what in building out JADC2 for the warfighter.

"This is what the I-plan actually does for us," Crall said. "It takes a look very clearly at specific and prioritized plans. How are we going to accomplish the very things that we said, again, in what order, how do you measure them, how do we leverage the boards, bureaus, working groups, cells, committees that are in the building, to empower them, to move these to fruition?"

The implementation plan for JADC2 also provides a plan for who will be doing what — so everybody working on execution of JADC2 knows what everybody else is doing, he said.

"We don't always know what others are working on," Crall said. "The I-plan captures that at its fullest, so you can look across your lane of expertise, be informed by some of the other efforts, and maybe that provides opportunity to come up with a better way."

The implementation plan also outlines, among other things, milestones for delivery of JADC2 and plans for funding as well.

"That's why the implementation plan is so critical and important to what we do," Crall said.

With the delivery of the implementation plan, Crall said it's now time to move ahead with building out JADC2.

"This is the year of delivery," he said. "And that's exactly what we intend to do. I think we've talked, we've studied, we've interacted, we've mapped, it's now time to put these together and learn by doing."

Like clockwork, the wall-to-wall news coverage of the latest crisis has shifted gears.

We have gone from COVID-19 lockdowns to Trump-Biden election drama to the Russia-Ukraine crisis to the Ketanji Brown Jackson confirmation hearings to Will Smith’s on-camera assault of comedian Chris Rock at the Academy Awards Ceremony.

The distractions, distortions, and political theater just keep coming.

The ongoing reality show that is life in the American police state feeds the citizenry’s voracious appetite for titillating, soap opera drama.

Much like the fabricated universe in Peter Weir’s 1998 film The Truman Show, in which a man’s life is the basis for an elaborately staged television show aimed at selling products and procuring ratings, the political scene in the United States has devolved over the years into a carefully calibrated exercise in how to manipulate, polarize, propagandize and control a population.

This is the magic of the reality TV programming that passes for politics today: as long as we are distracted, entertained, occasionally outraged, always polarized but largely uninvolved and content to remain in the viewer’s seat, we’ll never manage to present a unified front against tyranny (or government corruption and ineptitude) in any form.

The more that is beamed at us, the more inclined we are to settle back in our comfy recliners and become passive viewers rather than active participants as unsettling, frightening events unfold.

We don’t even have to change the channel when the subject matter becomes too monotonous. That’s taken care of for us by the programmers (the corporate media).

“Living is easy with eyes closed,” observed John Lennon, and that’s exactly what reality TV that masquerades as American politics programs the citizenry to do: navigate the world with their eyes shut.

As long as we’re viewers, we’ll never be doers.

Studies suggest that the more reality TV people watch—and I would posit that it’s all reality TV, entertainment news included—the more difficult it becomes to distinguish between what is real and what is carefully crafted farce.

“We the people” are watching a lot of TV.

On average, Americans spend five hours a day watching television. By the time we reach age 65, we’re watching more than 50 hours of television a week, and that number increases as we get older. And reality TV programming consistently captures the largest percentage of TV watchers every season by an almost 2-1 ratio.

This doesn’t bode well for a citizenry able to sift through masterfully-produced propaganda in order to think critically about the issues of the day, whether it’s fake news peddled by government agencies or foreign entities.

Those who watch reality shows tend to view what they see as the “norm.” Thus, those who watch shows characterized by lying, aggression and meanness not only come to see such behavior as acceptable and entertaining but also mimic the medium.

This holds true whether the reality programming is about the antics of celebrities in the White House, in the board room, or in the bedroom.

It’s a phenomenon called “humilitainment.”

I will go through some points related to it and for us in Syria most of them are old and known but for the Western audience they are new and for many of the deceived people in the world, they are new and these points are what we will build our future vision on, perhaps for decades, not for days, months, or years.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to address Australian parliament

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will address Australian politicians at 5:30pm AEDT on Thursday, as Russia's war continues to rage through his country.

The Prime Minister and Opposition Leader will each welcome Mr Zelenskyy, before he makes the address via video link.

Parliament will briefly suspend to facilitate the address, and senators will gather in the House of Representatives for the speech.

Mr Zelenskyy has addressed the US Congress, Canadian parliament, British parliament and other parliaments around the world over recent weeks.

He has repeatedly called on supporters of Ukrainian sovereignty to "do more" to help his country resist the Russian invasion.

There had been rumours Mr Zelenskyy would address the Australian parliament during this sitting week, with Prime Minister Scott Morrison saying last week he would "welcome any opportunity for him to speak to the Australian people".

'The enemy has marked me target number one'

In a video shot recently on the streets of Kyiv, Mr Zelenskyy said he feared his life was in danger.

"The enemy has marked me as target number one, my family as target number two," said the President, dressed in khaki and flanked by his officials.

"They want to destroy Ukraine politically by destroying the head of the state."

Several assassination attempts have been made on Mr Zelenskyy, including one allegedly by Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov in early March.

Mr Zelenskyy's wife, Olena Zelenska, their 17-year-old daughter Sasha and nine-year-old son Kyrylo, remain in Ukraine in hiding.

"As every woman in Ukraine, now I fear for my husband," Ms Zelenska wrote in a series of messages sent through intermediaries to ABC America.

"Every morning before I call him, I pray everything goes well.

"I also know how strong and enduring he is. He is able to withstand anything."

Earlier this month, Scott Morrison pledged $70 million to buy military equipment and weapons for Ukraine as part of a coordinated Western effort to help its armed forces resist Russia's invasion.

"The overwhelming majority of that [$70 million] will be in the lethal category," Mr Morrison said.

"We are talking missiles, ammunition, we are talking supporting them in their defence of their own homeland in Ukraine."

The government is also putting around $35 million toward humanitarian support to help international organisations responding to Ukrainians fleeing the country and seeking asylum in neighbouring regions.

Freshman Congressman Madison Cawthorn, a North Carolina Republican, is facing calls to reveal more information about his recent claims that fellow lawmakers in Washington have invited him to an orgy and done cocaine in front of him.

On Tuesday, Meghan McCain said on Twitter that the American people "deserve to know" the names of the people that Cawthorn was referring to when he made the controversial remarks in an interview last week.

McCain, a TV personality and daughter of the late John McCain, speculated that those lawmakers are likely MAGA supporters.

"So, Madison Cawthorne [sic] only hangs out with hard core MAGA people in DC..." McCain began. "The American public deserves to know which members of congress are doing cocaine and having orgies because they are unfit for office. Should we all just start guessing the people he's talking about?"

Cawthorn's controversial statements came during an appearance on the Warrior Poet Society podcast, in which he said that the Netflix drama House of Cards was an accurate portrayal of Washington.

"I look at all these people, a lot of them that I've looked up to through my life, I've always paid attention to politics," Cawthorn said. "Then all of the sudden you get invited to, 'Well hey, we're going to have kind of a sexual get-together at one of our homes, you should come.' I'm like, 'What did you just ask me to come to?' And then you realize they are asking you to come to an orgy."

Cawthorn then added that he's watched some of the people leading the national movement against drug addiction "do a key bump of cocaine" right in front of him.

His statements have reportedly angered several of his Republican colleagues, who discussed the issue during a closed-door House GOP conference meeting on Tuesday, which Cawthorn did not attend.

Arkansas Representative Steve Womack was among those who spoke out, telling the group he has received questions from his constituents about the claims, Politico reported. Others in the GOP have reportedly expressed doubt in Cawthorn's allegations.

According to reporters from both CNN and Politico, some lawmakers on Tuesday even joined McCain in wanting Cawthorn to identify the names of those who he claimed have engaged in the inappropriate behaviors.

"There's a desire among fellow Republicans for Cawthorn to identify the colleagues involved to prove the truth of his comments, but that desire to name names could also cause new headaches for a conference that's already faced an array of controversies this Congress," Politico reporter Olivia Beavers wrote on Tuesday.

In response to the ongoing controversy, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has promised to sit down with Cawthorn to discuss his comments.

This is not the first time the 26-year-old and staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump has caused trouble for the GOP. Earlier this month, Cawthorn faced criticism from the party for referring to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as a "thug."

Senator Richard Burr, a fellow North Carolina Republican, said in an interview on Tuesday that Cawthorn has "been an embarrassment at times."

Newsweek reached out to Cawthorn's office for comment but did not hear back in time for publication.

The US and EU have “tarnished their reputation” by freezing Russia’s central bank reserves, ex-President Dmitry Medvedev has said

A new financial order will be negotiated in the world, and the West won’t have the main say in it anymore, ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has claimed.

The “hellish” sanctions imposed on Russia by the US, EU, and their allies over the conflict in Ukraine have failed to cripple to the country, but are instead “returning to the West like a boomerang,” Medvedev, the former Russian president who is now the deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, wrote on Telegram. “This is hurtful for our ‘friends’ in Europe and overseas.”

But while the West continues its “fruitless efforts” to restrict Russia, “the world is gradually moving towards a new logic of global economic relations; towards upgrading the financial system,” he said.

According to Medvedev, the US and EU have “tarnished their reputation” by blocking the reserves of the Russian central bank. “It is impossible to trust those who freeze the accounts of other states; steal other people’s business assets and personal possessions, compromising the principles of sanctity of private property.”

After the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine in late February, the US and EU froze nearly half of Russia’s foreign currency reserves, worth $300 billion. Washington created a special Task Force, KleptoCapture, to oversee the implementation of sanctions against Moscow and seize the assets of individuals and entities who violate them.

Confidence in reserve currencies is “fading like the morning mist,” and the prospect of abandoning the dollar and euro in this role does not seem like such an unrealistic prospect anymore, he said. “The era of regional currencies is coming.”

Russia said that from March 31, it will only accept payments for gas in rubles from “unfriendly countries,” which include the US and EU, while China and Saudi Arabia have been discussing switching to the yuan in their oil trade.

“No matter if they want it or not, they’ll have to negotiate a new financial order,” Medvedev said. “And the decisive voice will then be with those countries that have a strong and advanced economy, healthy public finances and a reliable monetary system. And not with those who endlessly inflate their public debt, issuing more and more pieces of paper into circulation which aren’t backed by national wealth.”

Kremlin reveals details on switching to ruble payments for gas

Importers of Russian gas will be allowed time to switch the settlement method

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the process of switching to ruble payments for Russian gas export deliveries will take time and won’t begin immediately this week, despite the March 31 deadline set by presidential order.

“This process is more drawn out in time for technical reasons,” he told reporters, adding that importers will be allowed time to adjust.

Earlier this week, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the government to take necessary steps to switch all payments for Russian natural gas from “unfriendly” importers to the ruble, starting March 31.

The move targets states that are waging economic warfare against Russia by imposing numerous sanctions and freezing the country’s foreign currency reserves, following the launch of the military operation in Ukraine.

These will most likely include the US, EU, Canada, Australia, Japan, and a number of smaller countries.
