The Environmental Protection Agency has cleared the release of 2.4 billion genetically-modified mosquitoes in California and Florida. The mosquitoes, created by biotech firm Oxitec, will be non-biting Aedes aegypti males engineered to only produce viable male offspring, per the company. Oxitec says the plan will reduce numbers of the invasive Aedes aegypti, which can carry diseases like Zika, yellow fever and dengue.

Female mosquitoes will die, while males will reproduce and spread the self-limiting gene to the next generation, eventually leading to population declines. While these diseases aren’t yet spreading in California, the invasive insect has been flagged as a growing risk as their numbers increase across the state, reports the Guardian’s Gabrielle Canon.

“Given the growing health threat this mosquito poses across the U.S., we’re working to make this technology available and accessible,” Oxitec CEO Grey Frandsen says in a statement. “These pilot programs, wherein we can demonstrate the technology’s effectiveness in different climate settings, will play an important role in doing so.”

The mosquitoes will also contain a genetic marker so that scientists can easily identify them from wild populations, per Oxitec.

The experiment is an extension of a pilot project that the EPA approved in 2020, the company says. In 2021, Oxitec released 144,000 genetically-modified mosquitoes in the Florida Keys. It also released mosquitoes in Brazil, claiming that after 13 weeks, the technology suppressed 95 percent of Aedes aegypti.“It’s ingenious,” Mustapha Debboun, a medical and veterinary entomologist and general manager of the Delta Mosquito and Vector Control District, tells Mashable’s Mark Kaufman. “Instead of using a human being to apply a pesticide to kill these mosquitoes, we’re using male mosquitoes to do the job for us…It’s nature against nature.”

But critics aren’t convinced the mosquitoes will be entirely safe.

“There’s no such thing as 100 percent effective in science,” Dana Perls, the food and technology program manager with Friends of the Earth, tells the Guardian. “Yet the public is being asked to trust that Oxitec’s experiment will work and no [genetically-engineered] female mosquitoes will survive. But how do we know that?”

The Guardian reports opponents are concerned about the mosquitoes coming in contact with Tetracycline, an antibiotic used in agriculture, that the publication says would allow female mosquitoes to survive.

Supporters say the mosquitoes rarely travel more than 500 feet from where they’re born, reports Lisa M. Krieger for Mercury News. EPA regulations require that the mosquitoes cannot be released within “500 meters of wastewater treatment facilities, commercial citrus, apple, pear, nectarine, peach growing areas, or commercial cattle, poultry and pig livestock producers,” per The Guardian. Still, critics say more tests should take place in controlled environments.

“Once released into the environment, genetically engineered mosquitoes cannot be recalled,” Dr. Robert Gould, president of San Francisco Bay Physicians for Social Responsibility, tells Mercury News. “Rather than forge ahead with an unregulated, open-air genetic experiment, we need precautionary action, transparent data and appropriate risk assessments.”

German Chemical Giant Warns Of "Total Collapse" If Russian Gas Supply Cut

CEO of Germany's multinational BASF SE, the world's largest chemical producer, has warned that curbing or cutting off energy imports from Russia would bring into doubt the continued existence of small and medium-sized energy companies, and further would likely spiral Germany into its most "catastrophic" economic crisis going back to the end of World War 2.

Company CEO Martin Brudermuller issued the words in an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper just ahead of German officials by midweek giving an "early warning" to industries and the population of possible natural gas shortages, as Russia appears ready to firmly hold to Putin's recent declaration that "unfriendly countries" must settle energy payments in rubles, related to the Ukraine crisis and resultant Western sanctions.

According to Bloomberg he mused that while "Germany could be independent from Russia gas in four to five years" it remains that "LNG imports cannot be increased quickly enough to replace all Russian gas flows in the short term."

But in the meantime, Brudermuller described that "It's not enough that we all turn down the heating by 2 degrees now" given that "Russia covers 55 percent of German natural gas consumption." He emphasized that if Russian gas disappeared overnight, "many things would collapse here" - given that "we would have high levels of unemployment, and many companies would go bankrupt. This would lead to irreversible damage." He continued:

"To put it bluntly: This could bring the German economy into its worst crisis since the end of the Second World War and destroy our prosperity. For many small and medium-sized companies in particular, it could mean the end. We can't risk that!"

The dire warning of coming disaster in the event Russian gas is shut off came in response being questioned over whether it's at all possible to abandon Russian energy.

Asserting that this issue is not "black and white" - and that the German economy stands on the brink of catastrophe, the BASF CEO said that if this standoff continues to escalate it will "open the eyes of many on both sides"...

"A delivery stop for a short time would perhaps open the eyes of many - on both sides. It would make clear the magnitude of the consequences. At BASF, we would have to scale back or completely shut down production at our largest site in Ludwigshafen if the supply fell significantly and permanently below 50 percent of our maximum natural gas requirement. Minister Habeck has already activated the early warning level of the gas emergency plan."

One of the five people killed in a helicopter crash at Mount Disappointment has been remembered as a "passionate" leader of the meat industry, as investigators continue to investigate the cause of the tragedy.

Police said the other four occupants of the plane, all of whom died, were a Cheltenham man aged 32, an Inverloch woman aged 50, and two men from New South Wales aged 59 and 70.

Mr Troja was flying with a major client and their working group to inspect a property, the company told the ABC.

Chief executive Paul Scanlon told the Victorian Country Hour that Mr Troja had had a long and distinguished career in the meat industry and his death had hit the company hard.

"It's a tragic time for us here at Radfords," he said.

"Our thoughts are with his wife Ann, his children and his grandchildren and the members of his extended family and friends and also the family and friends of the other people caught up in this accident," Mr Scanlon said.

"We're not just sending our prayers, we are sending our guns, our ammunitions, humanitarian aid, all of this, our body armour," he said.

"We're going to be sending our armoured vehicles, our Bushmasters as well, and we'll be flying them over there on our C-17 [Globemasters]."

But he did not say how many vehicles would be sent or when they would be flown to Europe.

Mr Morrison's confirmation came after Defence Minister Peter Dutton said his department was still looking into how to get the Bushmasters to Ukraine.

"We are very, very much open to the request and I think of the inspiration that President Zelenskyy has provided to his own people and the world – he has brought Europe together in a way that was not possible before the war — we want to do whatever we can to help bring this war to an end," Mr Dutton said on Friday morning.

Speaking via a translator, Mr Zelenskyy said Ukraine needed weapons as well as sanctions against Russia and its supporters.

"Most of all we have to keep those who are fighting against this evil armed," he said.

"For example you have very good armoured personnel vehicles, Bushmasters, that could help Ukraine substantially, and other pieces of equipment that could strengthen our position in terms of armament.

"If you have an opportunity to share this with us we would be very grateful."

Arizona State Rep. Mark Finchem on Katie Hobbs’ Potential Prosecution: “She Knowingly Did This. I Don’t See How This Doesn’t End Up In Some Kind of a Conviction”

Soros-funded Arizona Secretary of state Katie Hobbs has knowingly and intentionally violated Arizona election law after several warnings from the Arizona Attorney General.

Katie Hobbs stole the 2020 election, and she is going to do it again in 2022.

After repeated warnings from Attorney General Mark Brnovich and a failed lawsuit to prevent her own indictment, corrupt Katie Hobbs defied election law and shut down the online candidate petition form but only for certain candidates on March 17th. This shutdown did not affect her failing campaign for Arizona Governor or other statewide races.

ARS 16-316 states,

the secretary of state shall provide a system for qualified electors to sign a nomination petition … for [candidates for statewide and legislative offices] by way of a secure internet portal.

The Gateway Pundit reported yesterday that the Attorney General finally referred a criminal case against Katie Hobbs for her clear-cut election law violations. Brnovich delegated his powers to investigate Hobbs and enforce the law against her to Cochise County Attorney Brian McIntyre.

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (AP) — The government of El Salvador said Monday it has arrested more than 1,000 gang suspects after a wave of killings over the weekend.

President Nayib Bukele ordered food for gang members held in Salvadoran prisons be reduced to two meals per day, seized inmates’ mattresses and posted a video of prisoners being frog-marched through corridors and down stairs.

The government declared a state of emergency and locked down prisons after 87 murders were committed Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Authorities have blamed the killings on gang members, and on Monday authorities said soldiers and police had raided gang strongholds around San Salvador.

Bukele wrote that those detained would not be released. His order that food for gang inmates be cut apparently was aimed at stretching current food supplies to feed the new detainees as well.

“Don't think they are going to be set free,” Bukele wrote in his Twitter account. “We are going to ration the same food we are giving now (to inmates).”

“And if the international community is worried about their little angels, they should come and bring them food, because I am not going to take budget money away from the schools to feed these terrorists,” the president wrote.

Bukele also posted a video showing guards with billy clubs roughly forcing inmates to walk, run and even descend stairs with their arms held behind their necks or backs.

At one point, a handcuffed inmate tumbles down a flight of stairs as a guard forces him to descend running. The prisoner groans and then is forced to his feet to continue running.

The inmates were stripped to their underwear, and their mattresses were taken away.

El Salvador’s congress granted Bukele’s request to declare a state of emergency early Sunday amid the wave of 87 gang-related killings over the weekend. By comparison, there were 79 homicides in the entire month of February.

The state of emergency suspends constitutional guarantees of freedom of assembly and loosen arrest rules for as much as thirty days, but could be extended. The decree allows suspects to be detained without a lawyer for up
