Inspector General Says Post Office Used iCOP Surveillance Program to Illegally Spy on Social Media Users

Why did the US government use the postal service to monitor what Americans post on social media?

The law enforcement arm of the US Postal Service secretly monitored and collected Americans’ social media posts, according to documents previously obtained by Yahoo News.

The spying program is known as iCOP, or Internet Covert Operations Program and involved goons trolling through social media sites to look for “inflammatory” posts – and then sharing the information with other government agencies.

Last we checked, “inflammatory” language was covered by the First Amendment.

“iCOP analysts are currently monitoring these social media channels for any potential threats stemming from the scheduled protests and will disseminate intelligence updates as needed,” the bulletin posted last year said.

The bulletin mentioned the “Stop the Steal” rally and included screenshots from an alleged member of the Proud Boys, but iCOP conceded that none of the posts contained anything threatening.

The bulletin didn’t mention anything about Antifa or BLM terrorists.

It turns out the post office used the program to illegally spy on Americans.

An inspector general investigation concluded the Post Office illegally used iCOP to spy on social media users.

Yahoo News reported:

An inspector general probe into the U.S. Postal Service surveillance program, known as iCOP, concluded that the agency did not have the legal authority to conduct the sweeping intelligence collection and surveillance of American protesters and others between 2018 and 2021.

The Postal Service Office of Inspector General launched an investigation into iCOP — which stands for Internet Covert Operations Program — at the request of Congress in direct response to reporting from Yahoo News last year.

“We determined that certain proactive searches iCOP conducted using an open-source intelligence tool from February to April 2021 exceeded the Postal Inspection Service’s law enforcement authority,” the March 25, 2022, inspector general report stated.

Using sophisticated technology and software, iCOP was running keyword searches like “protest” on social media to collect online speech about a host of different events that contained no threats and had nothing to do with the Postal Service’s work.

The inspector general report notes that in April 2021 Postal Inspection Service lawyers asked iCOP to remove “protest” from its keyword searches “to protect constitutional rights.”

Frank Albergo, president of the Postal Police Officers Association, told Yahoo News that the Postal Inspection Service had “lost their way.”

Biden boasts move will protect Americans from what he claims is ‘Putin’s price hike’

US President Joe Biden unveiled a two-pronged plan on Thursday to lower gas prices by increasing supply anddecreasing demand(WTF is wrong with him?), vowing to lead the country to a future of clean energy while soothing its immediate wounds by unleashing millions of barrels from its strategic reserves.

A “use it or lose it” policy would see Washington punish US oil companies by charging them fees for federal leases they hadn’t drilled on in years, Biden explained. Oil and gas companies are also obligated to use what they have, the president said, pointing to 9,000 unused but approved production permits for federal lands, amounting to more than a million unused acres that US oil and gas companies supposedly have the right to exploit.

If they don’t use the land, Biden suggested, they should pay up. “For US oil companies that are recording their largest profits in years, they can put those profits to productive use by producing more […] restarting idle wells, or producing on the sites they are already leasing.” American families, the president said, “can’t afford to let oil companies sit on their hands.”

What they shouldn’t be doing, he argued, is shipping those profits to investors – $80 billion in the last year alone, he claimed, and likely to increase in 2022. While insisting he was a “capitalist,” Biden chided oil companies for cashing in over “Putin’s price hike” while Americans struggled to put food on the table.

“I have no problem with corporations turning a good profit,” Biden insisted, but “investing those profits in production and innovation, that’s what they should do. Invest in your customers. It’s not [just] the patriotic view; it’s good for your business as well.”

Biden eventually acknowledged that getting oil production restarted took time, but promised to release one million barrels per day from the nation’s strategic oil reserves over the next six months, amounting to 180 million barrels, as a stopgap measure.

This bounty would be temporary, Biden warned, stating that ultimately the US and the rest of the world would have to wean itself off fossil fuels and speed the transition to a “clean energy future that’s made in America with American products and American values.” To get that project off the ground, the president announced he would be using the Defense Production Act to secure an American supply chain for electric vehicle batteries and the minerals needed to make them: lithium, graphite, nickel, and other elements that are scarce in the US but abundant in countries like Russia and China.

Biden, troublingly, did not explain how specifically the Defense Production Act would secure a supply chain for these minerals, and suggested that the country would be involved in spreading the gospel of green energy, exporting those technologies around the world.

He admitted his ideas had come from America’s 11 largest utility companies, whose CEOs visited him earlier in the month, but insisted they had told him energy savings would show up in families’ bills immediately and promised a $6,500 per home payment for families to weatherize their homes.

As for the reasons behind the US’ fuel problems in the first place, Biden blamed first the Covid-19 pandemic for sending the demand for oil plummeting, then the “strength and speed of our recovery” for sending it soaring skyward once again. He ultimately settled on Russian President Vladimir Putin as the real source of Americans’ troubles and the reason why gas rose over a dollar per gallon in many cities as soon as the first Russian soldier set foot in Ukraine.

“Our family budgets, your family budgets, none of it should hinge on whether a dictator declares war,” Biden lamented. Whilethe US gets less than 3% of its oil from Moscow, Biden has repeatedly linked the spike in fuel prices directly to his embargo on Russian oil and gas, eager to be seen as the one dealing out punishment to Russia.

Biden also promised he would not be dissuaded from his plan, revealing he was “open to deals to strengthen the plan but I will not be put off.” He would do whatever was necessary “to protect you from Putin’s price hike,” Biden said, declaring “Americans can’t afford [politics] right now,” but that “we’re the only nation that has turned every crisis we’ve ever faced into an opportunity.”

Latvia outlaws symbols used by Russian troops in Ukraine for “glorifying aggression”

The parliament of Latvia has adopted a law banning the display of the letters “Z” and “V” in public, saying the symbols used by Russian troops in Ukraine stand for glorifying aggression and war crimes. The former Soviet republic, now an EU and NATO member, acted after the government in Kiev called for the censorship of the symbols.

The Saeima used urgent procedure to vote on Thursday on amendments prohibiting displays of “military aggression and war crimes” at public events.

The law also says no permits for public events will be given if they are held within 200 meters of monuments commemorating the Soviet Army in Latvia. Individuals convicted under the new law will be fined up to €400, while companies can be fined up to €3,200.

“In condemning Russia’s hostilities in Ukraine, we must take a firm stand that symbols glorifying Russian military aggression, such as the letters 'Z', 'V' or other symbols used for such purposes, have no place in public events,” Artuss Kaimins, chair of the Saeima’s Human Rights and Public Affairs Commission, said in a statement.

His words echo those of Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba, who earlier this week called on the entire world to “criminalize” the “Z” as support for Russian “barbarism.” A Slovenian diplomat on Thursday revealed that his embassy in Kiev was asked to take down their flag because it was too similar to that of Russia.

Several German states have already said they would fine individuals for displays of the symbol. Latvia’s neighbor Lithuania is also considering a ban on “Z,” as well as the black-and-orange St.George’s ribbon, used on Soviet WWII victory medals.

Latvia officially bans symbols glorifying Nazi or Communist regimes, except when used for “educational, scientific or artistic purposes.” That has not stopped the annual marches honoring Latvian members of the Waffen-SS. Some 200 people gathered in Riga on March 16 to honor Hitler’s collaborators, after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Neither V nor Z are part of the Russian alphabet, which uses the Cyrillic script. Both symbols have been used to distinguish Russian vehicles taking part in military operations in Ukraine over the past month.

Moscow sent troops into Ukraine in late February, following a seven-year standoff over Kiev’s failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements and end the conflict with the breakaway regions of Donetsk and Lugansk. Russia ended up recognizing the two as independent states, at which point they asked for military aid.

Russia demands that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join the US-led NATO military bloc. Kiev insists the Russian offensive was completely unprovoked and has denied claims it was planning to retake the two Donbass republics by force.

Pakistani PM Imran Khan ‘accidentally’ named the United States as the culprit when he claimed “a foreign country I can’t name” was eager to see him removed from his post via a no-confidence vote.

“America has – oh, not America but a foreign country I can’t name” sent the leader the message in an effort to meddle in his country’s politics, Khan said in a televised address on Thursday, after a no-confidence vote against him was rescheduled.

Khan had received a briefing letter from the Pakistani ambassador to the US that included a recording of a senior official from Washington implying the relationship between the two countries would improve in Khan’s absence, local media reported on Thursday.

“They say that ‘our anger will vanish if Imran Khan loses this no-confidence vote’,” Khan claimed, describing the contents of the letter.

US State Department spokespersonNed Price insisted there was “no truth” to the allegations, stating Washington was “closely following developments in Pakistan” but that it “respect[ed] and support[ed] Pakistan’s constitutional process and the rule of law.”

It’s not the first time Khan has accused Washington of meddling in the country's internal affairs and trying to influence its policy decisions. He broached the issue at a Sunday rally where he sought to draw on supporters’ energy as his political opposition has attempted to oust him and reminded his supporters during Thursday’s broadcast that Pakistan had gotten nothing from supporting the US’ war on “terror” except a lot more terrorists and drone bombings.

Khan has refused to bow to American pressure and condemn Russia for sending troops into Ukraine, arguing Pakistan had nothing to gain by such a move. However, this has made him a target for the US and its allies, who are already upset that neighboring India has also refused to join their sanctions campaign against Moscow.

Debate regarding the no-confidence motion was supposed to begin on Thursday, though the deputy speaker, a member of Khan’s party, suspended the proceedings when the legislators chose not to address other items on the agenda first. This scandalized opposition leader Shahbaz Sharif, who told reporters that the deputy speaker had “once again dishonored the parliamentary norms by not allowing the agenda item for a debate.”

Parliament is next due to meet on Sunday. Khan’s party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, is not just outnumbered – it’s fighting the two more mainstream parties (Pakistan Muslim League-N and Pakistan People’s Party) that typically switch off power between them.

On top of that, he faces even steeper odds, as surviving the no-confidence measure would bring him one step closer to becoming the only Pakistani PM to ever complete his term. The embattled PM – who previously played cricket for the country’s team, leading them to their only World Cup victory in 1992 – has refused to resign, no matter what the odds against him, declaring he will “never quit whatever the result may be.”

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner made a "valuable" appearance on Thursday before the U.S. House of Representatives committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol, Representative Elaine Luria, a member of the panel, said.

"It was really valuable for us to have the opportunity to speak to him," Luria told MSNBC. The Democratic representative declined to provide specifics about Kushner's appearance before the panel via videolink, but said he commented on various reports about events of the day that have already been published.

"He was able to voluntarily provide information to us to verify, substantiate, provide his own take on this different reporting," she said.

Kushner is the first close relative of the former president known to have spoken to the House Select Committee. He also served as a senior adviser in the Trump White House.

A committee spokesman declined comment.

The Select Committee has conducted hundreds of interviews in its investigation of the attack on the Capitol last year by supporters of Trump as lawmakers were poised to certify the Republican's defeat in the November 2020 presidential election by Democratic President Joe Biden.

Washington’s point man on anti-Russia sanctions warned India against deeper cooperation with Moscow

A top US national security official has called on India to scale back its economic and military ties with Russia,warning of “consequences” for any nation that helps Moscow avoid a recent wave of Western sanctions.

Speaking to reporters after meeting with Indian officials on Thursday, Washington’s deputy national security adviser for international economicsDaleep Singhurged New Delhi not to boost Russian energy imports, and to avoid any moves that might “undermine” the US dollar.

“What we would not like to see is a rapid acceleration of India’s imports from Russia as it relates to energy or any other any other exports that are currently being prohibited by the US,” he said, adding that the United States is “very keen for all countries, especially our allies and partners, not to create mechanisms that prop up the ruble and that attempt to undermine the dollar-based financial system.” (Him saying that out loud, is going to be taking as a challenge of how many countries can now get on board to undermine the dollar! Asked what those consequences could entail, the adviser declined to elaborate, saying that was part of “private discussions that I’m not going to share publicly.”

Singh’s remarks followed reports that Moscow and New Delhi are currently working out a rupee-ruble payment system, which would allow the two nations to conduct bilateral trade in each others’ currencies. India also recently agreed to buy a quantity of Russian crude oil at a discount, an unpopular decision with the US and some allies, who have embarked on a punitive sanctions campaign designed to isolate Russia’s economy and wreck the ruble.

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also visited the Indian capital on Thursday, coinciding with official meetings with Singh as well as UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss.

Though American, Australian and British officials have criticized India’s refusal to go along with the sanctions spree, US State Department spokesman Ned Price insisted that Washington is not “seeking to change” any nation’s “relationship with the Russian Federation,” citing India in particular.

“What we are seeking to do, whether it is in the context of India or other partners and allies around the world, is to do all we can” to ensure that “the international community is speaking in unison,” Price added in comments on Lavrov’s trip.

While condemning Russia’s “needless war” on Ukraine, Singh said his visit to India was “in a spirit of friendship to explain the mechanisms of our sanctions,” but nonetheless warned that there would be “consequences [for] countries that actively attempt to circumvent or backfill” those penalties. “If you set that against the reality that China and Russia have now declared a no limits partnership, and that Russia has said that China is its most important strategic partner, by extension, that has real implications for India,” he said, claiming that Moscow would not “come running to India’s defense” in the event of a Chinese incursion.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned Europe of a new influx of migrants that, in his opinion, will “inevitably” follow the food crisis.

Discussing on Thursday the unprecedented sanctions imposed on Moscow by the West in response to the Russian attack on Ukraine, Putin criticized the behavior of some Western politicians, who are allegedly prepared tosacrifice their citizens’ interests in order to “enjoy the good graces of their overseas master and overlord,” branding such an approach as “the opposite of populism.”

“​​People are urged to eat less, put on more clothes, and use less heating, give up on travel – presumably for the benefit of the people who are demanding this kind of voluntary deprivation as a sign of someabstract North Atlantic solidarity,” Putin said at a meeting on air transportation and aircraft manufacturing on Thursday.

He underlined that Moscow has been seeing “such questionable approaches and actions” in economic, energy, and food policies for more than a year.

Incidentally, the food crisis will inevitably be followed by another one, another wave of migration, primarily to the European countries.

A few days ago, the risks of an “unprecedented” global food crisis were discussed at the G7 summit in Brussels. Since Russia and Ukraine are key crop suppliers in the world, the G7 leaders have blamed Moscow’s offensive in Ukraine for a looming crisis and are now discussing a package of measures to prevent food shortages.

Nevertheless, in Putin’s opinion, theWest continues to make decisions that “are pushing the global economy towards crisis,” leading to the disruption of production and logistics chains, an increase in global inflation, and the aggravation of inequality, to a decline in the living standards of millions of people, and to mass famine in the poorest countries.

Putin accused the US of trying to solve its own problems at the expense of other countries and to shift the blame for its own economic mistakes onto Russia. Moreover, in the president’s opinion, the US is going to try to cash in on the current global instability, for example, by attempting “to push Europe towards expensive American liquid natural gas.”

Putin added that all the sanctions which are being imposed on Moscow now “have been prepared in advance” and “would have been imposed in any case.” They are poised, according to the president, “to curb Russia’s development,” to undermine its sovereignty and to weaken its “industrial, financial and technological potential.”

Taking into consideration the fact that the West has been imposing the restrictions against Russia for many years, there is no point thinking that this approach would change any time soon, Putin emphasized.

The West strongly condemned Russia’s military attack on Ukraine, calling it “unlawful” and “unjustified,” and slapped Moscow with hard-hitting sanctions, covering many sectors of the Russian economy. The restrictions include Washington’s ban on energy imports, an international ban for the use of the SWIFT interbank messaging system, and personal sanctions against Putin. Hundreds of companies have suspended or completely halted their operations in Russia.

In response, Moscow has included most of the Western countries in its list of “unfriendly states.” All of these countries are now subject to various retaliation measures, restrictions, and specific requirements from Russia. For example, Moscow now wants all “unfriendly” states to pay for gas supplies in rubles. Another retaliatory initiative saw the Finance Ministry requesting that Russian companies that want to work with firms from countries on the list receive government permission first.

I’m convinced countries that take in refugees do it for the money laudering and they love war for this reason. As much as the majority have goid hearts the countries know money flows when wars are ignited. Of all places Poland ahould not be im support of Ukraine (caveat with my minimal understanding of the countries).

Poland has requested €2.2 billion from the EU to cover the costs associated with the Ukrainian refugees, the country’s deputy interior minister, Blazej Pobozy, has revealed.

Speaking to the TVP Info broadcaster, Pobozy explained that, with such an influx of refugees, the costs are huge and are expected to rise even more.

“We calculate the costs at around a thousand euros per person for the first six months. At this moment, the needs which we reported to the European Commission have amounted to 2 billion 200 million euros,” the official said.

He added that Poland is not only “a spokesman” for the Ukrainians in Europe but also a country helping the refugees “here and now,” and thus it has all the grounds to apply for funds from the EU “here and now.” According to Pobozy, only 16 million euros have been allocated for his ministry so far to deal with the crisis, which was obviously not enough.

“So far, Poland has not received any money for refugees from the European Commission,” he said.

The deputy minister believes, however, that eventually his country will receive the requested funds. He emphasized, however, that if Poland waited for money to arrive before providing help to the refugees, there would by now be “a gigantic humanitarian catastrophe.”

According to the latest data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the total number of refugees having fled Ukraine since the launch of Russia’s attack on February 24 exceeds 4 million. More than 2.3 million are now in Poland.

Russia attacked its neighbor in late February, following Ukraine’s failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements signed in 2014, and Russia’s eventual recognition of the Donbass republics in Donetsk and Lugansk. The German and French brokered protocols had been designed to regularize the status of those regions within the Ukrainian state.

Russia has now demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join the US-led NATO military bloc. Kiev insists the Russian offensive was completely unprovoked and has denied claims it was planning to retake the two republics by force.

Abstract

Currently, the world is struggling with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Prion-like domains are critical for virulence and the development of therapeutic targets; however, the prion-like domains in the SARS-CoV-2 proteome have not been analyzed. In this in silico study, using the PLAAC algorithm, we identified the presence of prion-like domains in the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. Compared with other viruses, a striking difference was observed in the distribution of prion-like domains in the spike protein, since SARS-CoV-2 was the only coronavirus with a prion-like domain found in the receptor-binding domain of the S1 region of the spike protein. The presence and unique distribution of prion-like domains in the SARS-CoV-2 receptor-binding domains of the spike protein is particularly interesting, since although the SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV S proteins share the same host cell receptor, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), SARS-CoV-2 demonstrates a 10- to 20-fold higher affinity for ACE2. Finally, we identified prion-like domains in the α1 helix of the ACE2 receptor that interact with the viral receptor-binding domain of SARS-CoV-2. Taken together, the present findings indicate that the identified PrDs in the SARS-CoV-2 receptor-binding domain (RBD) and ACE2 region that interact with RBD have important functional roles in viral adhesion and entry.

Azerbaijan planning ‘large-scale’ attack, Armenia claims

Yerevan claims Baku is looking for a pretext for a military offensive

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has accused Azerbaijan of trying to create a pretext for launching “a large-scale attack on Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh.”

The latter is a disputed region, most of which has been under Yerevan's de-facto control since the collapse of the USSR in 1991. In the fall of 2020, Armenia and Azerbaijan fought a relatively short, but bloody, war over the territory. It ended with Baku making gains and Russia brokering a peace agreement, which saw Moscow send peacekeepers to the area.

Pashinyan cited Baku’s claims that Yerevan had not responded to its five-point peace settlement proposal, sent via the Minsk Group - established in 1992, by the OSCE – on March 10. According to the Armenian prime minister, his government responded on March 14.

Speaking on Thursday at a government meeting, Pashinyan said that Baku “first dumps theses on a diplomatic or public platform,” and “ascribes some promises to Armenia,” claiming later that Yerevan is not complying with the agreements.

Pashinyan believes that “Baku is trying to legitimize a large-scale attack on Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh.” There is considerable concern in Yerevan that the Azeris might take advantage of the current situation where Russia is embroiled in the Ukraine conflict.

Nevertheless, the prime minister expressed hope that, despite rising tensions in bilateral relations, his upcoming meeting in Brussels with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and European Council President Charles Michel on April 6 will bear fruit.

“I once again express Armenia’s readiness to sign a peace agreement with Azerbaijan. Armenia is ready for the immediate start of peace negotiations,” Pashinyan said.

On Thursday, Azerbaijan’s leader also expressed support for a peace agreement as soon as possible.

The last few weeks have seen a significant escalation in tensions around Nagorno-Karabakh – a region populated with ethnic Armenians, but internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan – with the international community expressing concern over the developments.

Armenia has accused Azerbaijan of seizing two villages, Khramort and Parukh – which the Azerbaijanis call Farukh – located on the armistice line which was established in 2020 between Azerbaijan and the self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR). Armenian media claims that the ensuing firefight, which allegedly involved Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 combat drones, resulted in more than a dozen wounded and three killed on its side, as well as an unspecified number of Azerbaijani casualties.

Baku denied the accusations, saying its troops were simply “continuing the process of clarifying their locations and positions without the use of force.”

However, on March 26, Russian peacekeepers, who are currently patrolling the NKR, reported that the Azerbaijani military had violated the ceasefire, launching airstrikes against forces of the breakaway region. Baku then accused Russia of taking a “one-sided” view of the events. Blaming Armenia for the escalation, Azerbaijan claimed that it was responding to a “covert attack” by the “illegal Armenian forces.”

The Ukraine ‘aid’ bill that’s actually a license to kill and defraud

Papers show how the Ukraine stays a Western proxy in a war with with Russia

On March 15, US President Joe Biden signed a bill approving a staggering $13.6 billion in aid to Ukraine. Heavily promoted in advance as a vital lifeline to Kiev that would safeguard citizens, defend refugees, and protect democracy, references to the supposedly landmark move immediately vanished from the mainstream media following its White House approval, and have remained absent ever since.

One explanation for this informational deficit could well be that in reality, the legislation serves no tangible benevolent ends of any kind, in fact providing an effective blank cheque for proxy war, anduntrammelled embezzlement by US government agencies and contractors.

This much is certain from a precursory analysis of the bill’s lengthy underlying text. The term “military” crops up over 350 times, “humanitarian” just 58. What’s more, almost half the headline $13.6 billion wellspring ($6.5 billion) has already been allocated - to cover the cost of weapons shipments to Ukraine and the buildup of NATO forces in the region in January and February this year. In other words, before the war had even formally begun.

Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) reports published in the weeks prior to the war commencing highlight some of the gruesome purposes to which this “lethal aid” may have been put. In one representative filing on February 18, its investigators documented how a kindergarten in breakaway Luhansk had been struck by shrapnel, while 20 children were being taught inside. Luckily, they all escaped uninjured.

The same report noted that, “in violation of withdrawal lines,” OSCE observers identified placement of surface-to-air-missile systems, howitzers, anti-tank guns and multiple-launch rocket systems in government-controlled areas of Donetsk. Neither this blatantly belligerent activity, nor the Organization recording how the overwhelming majority of missile and rocket attacks carried out in the days leading up to the invasion were targeted at breakaway areas by government forces, has ever been mentioned by a Western news outlet.

This may be partially explained by the US, UK and Canada pulling out of the OSCE mission in Ukraine in mid-February, allegedly due to fears of impending Russian invasion – another rationale for the English-speaking trio’s withdrawal could be that revealing the reality of egregious government abuses in Eastern Ukraine was problematic, and politically unpopular at home.

The mainstream code of silence on such crimes against humanity is no longer rigorously maintained. In fact, many current and former Western state and deep-state officials have been unabashed in confirming Washington’s overriding priority is arming Kiev to the teeth, to foment a protracted insurrection and trap Russia in a bloodspattered quagmire, in the manner of the Soviet-Afghan War.

This comparison was drawn favorably by US lawmaker Adam Smith, House Armed Services Committee chair, after legislation to establish a “Ukraine Resistance Fund” was recently drafted. Speaking to MSNBC on February 28, failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton echoed his endorsement, stating “the model that people are now looking toward” in respect of the Ukraine crisis is the “armed insurgency [that] basically drove the Russians out of Afghanistan.”

Washington’s shameful experience of funding, arming and training the Afghan resistance is much-venerated in modern US foreign policy circles today, despite the strategy creating the conditions that led to the tragedy of 9/11, on the alleged basis it was fundamental to the fall of Communism. However, many mainstream historians - and indeed the CIA’s then-Soviet Affairs chief - largely or completely discount the Afghan war as a factor in the Soviet Union’s collapse.

In its defense, the “aid” bill contains some protocols related to food and medical aid, although details on what will be sent to whom and where are troublingly unforthcoming.

The State Department is afforded lone responsibility for deciding every aspect of distribution, with no apparent obligation on the part of officials to publicly account for any allocations - raising the obvious prospect that the intended beneficiaries of this ostensibly humanitarian disbursement could well be soldiers, mercenaries or guerilla fighters.

Conversely, it could be that these projects are concerned with selling inflammatory, indirect US intervention in the Ukraine crisis to its own population, on a false prospectus.

"CEO of Germany's multinational BASF SE, the world's largest chemical producer, has warned that curbing or cutting off energy imports from Russia would bring into doubt the continued existence of small and medium-sized energy companies, and further would likely spiral Germany into its most "catastrophic" economic crisis going back to the end of World War 2.

Company CEO Martin Brudermuller issued the words in an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper just ahead of German officials by midweek giving an "early warning" to industries and the population of possible natural gas shortages, as Russia appears ready to firmly hold to Putin's recent declaration that "unfriendly countries" must settle energy payments in rubles, related to the Ukraine crisis and resultant Western sanctions.

According to Bloomberg he mused that while "Germany could be independent from Russia gas in four to five years" it remains that "LNG imports cannot be increased quickly enough to replace all Russian gas flows in the short term."

"But in the meantime, Brudermuller described that "It's not enough that we all turn down the heating by 2 degrees now" given that "Russia covers 55 percent of German natural gas consumption." He emphasized that if Russian gas disappeared overnight, "many things would collapse here" - given that "we would have high levels of unemployment, and many companies would go bankrupt. This would lead to irreversible damage." He continued:

"To put it bluntly: This could bring the German economy into its worst crisis since the end of the Second World War and destroy our prosperity. For many small and medium-sized companies in particular, it could mean the end. We can't risk that!"

The dire warning of coming disaster in the event Russian gas is shut off came in response being questioned over whether it's at all possible to abandon Russian energy.

Asserting that this issue is not "black and white" - and that the German economy stands on the brink of catastrophe, the BASF CEO said that if this standoff continues to escalate it will "open the eyes of many on both sides"...

And what if, for example, Putin's demand for payment in rubles leads to an immediate stop in gas supplies?

"A delivery stop for a short time would perhaps open the eyes of many - on both sides. It would make clear the magnitude of the consequences. But if we don't get any more Russian gas for a long time, then we really have a problem here in Germany. At BASF, we would have to scale back or completely shut down production at our largest site in Ludwigshafen if the supply fell significantly and permanently below 50 percent of our maximum natural gas requirement. Minister Habeck has already activated the early warning level of the gas emergency plan."

Separate sources estimate that at Ludwigshafen alone this scenario would immediately lead to some 40,000 employees being possibly laid off, or at least put on short-time working hours."

"He warned further in the interview that many Germans are currently greatly underestimating the consequences of what Russia shutting off the taps would mean... nothing less than a historic crisis:

"Many have misconceptions. I notice that in many of the conversations I have. People often make no connection at all between a boycott and their own job. As if our economy and our prosperity were set in stone."

He explained that higher prices are already having a huge impact on the food supply given at this point BASF has been forced to reduce the production of ammonia for fertilizer production.

Brudermuller called this "a catastrophe and we will feel it even more clearly next year than this one. Because most of the fertilizers that the farmers need this year have already been bought. In 2023 there will be a shortage, and then the poor countries in particular, for example in Africa, will no longer be able to afford to buy basic foodstuffs." In a very alarming statement and forewarning, he added: "There is a risk of famine."

A ransomware attack on a Pfizer vendor triggered overpayments to hourly staffers — and now the pharma giant wants most of that money back

Pfizer employees say they're frustrated and angry over a payroll mistake that could force them to give back money some have already spent.

"I think everybody is just really disheartened with how all of this was handled. To ask for this money back, is just I think morally wrong,” said one employee who requested anonymity, over fear of retribution from Pfizer.

One employee provided WWMT with a letter and documents received last week that showed Pfizer telling the employee they owed more than $800 in overpayment. Another employee said the issue is affecting hourly workers all across the company.

Pfizer said the overpayments happened following a ransomware attack on Ultimate Kronos Group in December 2021. Pfizer uses Kronos to track the hours employees work and pay them.

“We all feel that this is Pfizer’s payroll mistake. We never asked for this money, we were never consulted on whether we wanted extra money,” the anonymous Pfizer worker said.

The employee said they had no idea they were being overpaid and the money Pfizer is asking for has already been spent.

“We feel very much taken advantage of. We feel the stockholders are the only ones benefiting and we were kind of just gone to the wayside,” the employee said.

According to Pfizer's letter, affected workers can choose to repay the money over one, three, or six months. The letter went on to say the company will not take money from future paychecks without notice.

Pfizer also said it would pay $250 towards each worker's overpayment balance.

Pfizer, which produced one of the three COVID-19 vaccines available in the U.S., reported more than $80 billion in revenues for 2021 and 92% operational growth. It was also the first COVID-19 vaccine to receive emergency use authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

A paedophile who posed as a medic in refugees camps and offered to rescue children from an orphanage in Ukraine has been banned from leaving the UK.

Adam Wyles travelled to Poland and Ukraine between March 7 and March 21 to provide aid to refugees fleeing the war, despite having previous convictions for possessing indecent images of children.

Police were told that the 34-year-old pretended to be a medical officer and had a fake air ambulance medic uniform and a false identification badge.

A person who travelled with him revealed that Wyles of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, also offered to rescue children in an orphanage in Ukraine while on his trip.

Wyles was given a community order and a give year sexual harm prevention order which restricted his contact with children in 2015 having been convicted of possessing indecent images.

He breached the order in October 2019 when he tricked a charity, Little Miracles, which supports children with disabilities into letting him drive a coach to Europe.

The charity, which knew nothing about his previous convictions, allowed him to drive their coach to the south coast and onto France and Germany before returning to the UK.

He did not have any contact with children on the trip.

Police who invested the breach found he possessed more indecent images of children on his computed, including 52 still and 25 videos in the most serious Catergory A.

He was also found to have failed to comply with his order between February and September 2019 by not informing police he had been staying with a new partner.

He was also found to have communicated with a 12-year-old girl, which resulted in him being jailed for 27 months in May 2020.

At the time of his sentencing in May 2020, Judge Katherine Moore at Norwich Crown Court ruled that he posed a 'high risk of sexual harm to children', and renewed his Sexual Harm Prevention Order for ten years.

He was also placed on the sex offenders' register for the same period of time.

The court also heard at the time that he held other previous convictions which included posing as a police officer and possessing a police uniform.

Judge Levett told Ipswich Crown Court this week: 'I reach the conclusion it is necessary and proportionate to amend the order.'

House Republicans are demanding that the Oversight and Reform Committee “immediately” convene a hearing with top Biden administration officials on the $13.6 billion aid package to address Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In a letter to committee chair Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.), 17 GOP lawmakers led by committee ranking member Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) and Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-Ind.) said it was “vital” that the funding ensure that the appropriated aid is “distributed effectively and efficiently to best support not only the Ukrainian military resistance but also those Ukrainian civilians currently under Russian siege or displaced by Russian aggression.”

The lawmakers want Secretary of State Blinken, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, U.S. Agency for International Development Administrator (USAID) Samantha Power and OMB Director Shalanda Young to testify before the panel.

“In any crisis the speed and scale of response and proper implementation are critical to success,” Spartz said. “Congress must exercise its oversight responsibility more effectively and demand timely accountability from the Executive Branch.”

The Hill has reached out to Maloney’s office for comment.

The supplemental aid package was included in the $1.5 trillion government funding bill that President Biden signed earlier this month to fund the government through September.

Among its provisions, the deal included roughly $6.5 billion for the Department of Defense to support deployments to the region and to replenish stocks of equipment sent to Ukraine. It also included nearly $4 billion for the State Department and nearly $2.8 billion for USAID, including money for humanitarian assistance programs.

The U.S. has been racing to help Ukraine fend off Russia’s invasion, which is in its second month, through military and humanitarian aid.

President Biden held a call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday, and said the U.S. would provide $500 million in budgetary assistance to Ukraine.

“As Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to wage war against the sovereign nation of Ukraine, we must ensure bureaucratic red tape does not slow down this crucial aid or fall into the wrong hands,” Comer said.

“Chairwoman Maloney must immediately convene a hearing with top Biden Administration officials to ensure taxpayer dollars allocated for Ukraine’s military and citizens are not wasted, abused, or mismanaged,” Comer continued.

There has been some “progress” in peace talks with Ukraine, Lavrov says

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday that Ukraine has come closer on the terms regarding Crimea and the Donbass republics. He made the comments several days after a round of peace talks with Kiev concluded in Turkey.

“There is progress, foremost in terms of recognition of the impossibility of Ukraine becoming a member of a bloc, the impossibility of Ukraine [joining] NATO,” Lavrov told reporters during his trip to New Delhi, India.

“We’ve also seen a lot more understanding of reality. I’m referring to the situation with Crimea and the Donbass.”

Crimea voted to leave Ukraine and join Russia shortly after the 2014 coup in Kiev. The Donbass republics of Donetsk and Lugansk broke away from Ukraine the same year.

During peace talks in Istanbul, Turkey on Tuesday, the Ukrainian team proposed holding separate negotiations on the status of Crimea over the course of 15 years. However, they refused to recognize the peninsula as part of Russia, or to recognize the two Donbass republics as independent states.

The Kremlin previously stated that Crimea’s return to Ukraine is impossible. According to amendments adopted in 2020, the Russian Constitution bans the surrender of Russian territory, with the exception of minor border adjustments.

Eliminating the FDA’s blood donation ban on men who have sex with men would help ease the U.S. shortage

For the first time ever, the American Red Cross this week declared a national blood shortage crisis and hospitals are putting out calls for donors — yet the Food and Drug Administration continues to ban men who have sex with men from donating blood.

It is long past time for the FDA to eliminate this ban. No other group is similarly banned from donating blood. Prohibiting only men who have sex with men from donating blood is the definition of homophobic, because it presumes that this sexual orientation is unsafe. That is provably false: Studies report no risk to the blood supply in other countries that do not ban donations from this group of men.

The assumption that blood from sexually active gay and bisexual men is deadly is deadly. UCLA researchers say lifting the ban would mean as many as 350,000 new donors and could treat more than a million people.

The FDA’s current policy is this: A man who has had sex with another man in the last three months may not donate blood. It is an outdated artifact of the early years of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

In March 1983, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published a report that HIV can be transmitted by blood. Shortly after, gay and bisexual men began to be turned away from donating blood at Irwin Memorial Blood Bank in San Francisco if they had been sexually active in the last five years. This unofficial policy became official in September 1985, when the FDA banned gay and bisexual men for life from donating blood.

That policy was partially lifted 30 years later when the FDA swapped the lifetime ban for a year of abstinence. That policy was shortened to the current three-month ban in April 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic forced the cancellation of blood drives across the country, causing blood supply shortages in New York and Seattle and the loss of enough blood to treat 3,000 people in Southern California.

The argument for a three-month ban is to account for early infection that an individual may not be aware of. In the summer of 2021, the United Kingdom revised its 12-month abstinence requirement to allow blood donations by men who have sex with men as long as they have been monogamous for three months. Yet even a three-month ban is scientifically unwarranted.

The FDA acknowledges that current blood-screening methods can detect infectious diseases such as HIV and hepatitis C within this three-month window. That the U.S. has sophisticated screening methods in place is why no one was surprised when researchers found found no difference in HIV infection when the lifetime ban was shortened to one year in 2015. This is good news: With more than 17 million blood transfusions every year in the U.S., the country does not rely on the honor system. The bad news is that people are punished for telling the truth about who they are and blood donors are turned away even though their blood is needed and would be carefully screened.

Yet here we are today. To turn away blood donors because of their sexual orientation while there is a critical blood shortage during the worst pandemic in a century is medically baseless and morally reprehensible.

A more sensible approach would be to assess potential blood donors’ risk for infectious disease on a case-by-case basis, regardless of sexual orientation. Other countries are doing just that. Three weeks ago, the Canadian Blood Services announced it would entirely lift its ban on men who have sex with men donating blood. Israel did the same thing back in August. Both are shifting toward a practice similar to Italy’s, which eliminated its ban in 2001. That country went straight from an outright ban to an individual risk assessment, a practice that does not consider sexual orientation but at-risk behavior. A study led by Italy’s National Institute of Health compared HIV infection among blood donors before and after the ban was lifted. There was no difference in the rate between men who have sex with men and heterosexuals.

The ban on blood donations by men who have sex with men should have been ended in the wake of the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando in 2016, when men who tried to give their blood to save their friends’ lives could not do so. Now, as countries around the world report dangerously low numbers of blood donors and the American Red Cross says hospitals in the U.S. have “less than a day’s supply of certain blood types,” the FDA ought to do what is medically and morally right and end the ban on blood donation by sexually active men who have sex with men.

A school nurse in Hartford, CT was suspended over a “transphobic” Facebook post in which she questioned why 11-year-olds were on puberty blockers.

77-year-old Kathleen Cataford, who works at Richard J Kinsella Magnet School, posted in a mum’s Facebook group that there was an 11-year-old girl at the school on puberty blockers and 12 other students identifying as “non-binary.”

“Investigate the school system curriculum…CT is a very socially liberal, gender confused state,” she wrote. “As a public school nurse, I have an 11yo female student on puberty blockers and a dozen identifying as non-binary, all but two keeping this as a secret from their parents with the help of teachers, SSW [social workers] and school administration.”

A record $31 million award to a mom and pop bakery that accused a liberal Ohio college of ruining its business with false accusations of racism has been upheld by a state appeals court.

Gibson's Bakery, a 135-year-old family business near the campus of Oberlin College, was initially awarded more than $40 million in punitive and compensatory damages in the aftermath of a 2016 incident in which the owner's son confronted three black Oberlin students who were stealing wine from the store. Although the suspects were arrested and later admitted they were shoplifting, the episode touched off school-sanctioned protests and accusations of racism that crippled the store's business.

He’s taught courses on the AIDS epidemic, the opioid crisis, and the coronavirus pandemic.

In this faculty insight (adapted from a Career & Academic Resource Center podcast episode), Silverstein discusses his courses and his experience working with Harvard Extension students in the Faculty Aide Program.

Harvard Extension: Jason, can you share a bit about yourself and the courses you’ve taught at Harvard Extension School?

Silverstein: Absolutely. I’ve had a chance to offer classes through the Extension School and Harvard Summer School since the spring of 2017. I’ve been able to teach classes on everything from AIDS, to earthquakes, to the opioid epidemic.

I’ve also taught a class on death and dying, called Dying Well, which has meant so much to me and came out of my dissertation research on pediatric palliative care at Boston Children’s Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Recently, we’ve been offering a pretty innovative course on the coronavirus pandemic, which has been an incubator for students’ own interventions.

The US, Germany, and France may push Ukraine into ending the fighting early – and the UK is reportedly concerned

Britain wants Ukraine and Russia to keep on fighting until Kiev scores a military victory, an alleged government source, cited on Thursday by The Times, has indicated. London is concerned that Kiev’s other Western backers might push it into settling for peace too soon.

Boris Johnson’s government is concerned that President Volodymyr Zelensky may be pushed into making significant concessions to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in terms of “territory, sanctions and the pursuit of Putin as a potential war criminal,” the anonymous individual claimed.

“Some of our allies may be too eager for [Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky] to settle,” the source said, referring to France, Germany, and the US. “We think Ukraine needs to be in the strongest possible position militarily before those talks can take place.”

London believes there must not be an “easy off-ramp” for Moscow, and urges that the sanctions be intensified “until all Russian forces have left Ukraine, including Crimea,” the newspaper reported.

Crimea broke away from Ukraine in 2014 after the democratically elected government in Kiev was overthrown in a violent coup. Moscow says Crimea is a part of its territory and considers its status settled.

The UK prime minister warned Zelensky against yielding in a phone call on the weekend, the report said.

Britain has been one of the most vocal backers of Ukraine in its stand-off with Russia, helping it with its military build-up since 2014 and shipping thousands of missiles in the weeks before the hostilities started.

Russia launched the attack on Kiev in late February, citing NATO’s creeping expansion into Ukraine as a major threat to national security, and accusing Western nations of refusing to resolve the conflict diplomatically.

Moscow stated that it was limiting military action in Ukraine to targeted strikes against military infrastructure, and to keeping Ukrainian forces in check in the hope of limiting civilian casualties and damage. It said it has no designs on territorial conquest or regime change in the country.

Dmitry Medvedev says that Russia could cease exports to “unfriendly countries”

Amid Western sanctions, Russia might stop selling and buying food from “unfriendly countries,” former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has revealed.

Medvedev, who is currently the deputy chair of the country’s Security Council, published a list of suggestions related to Russia’s food security and exports on Telegram on Friday. The post notes that Russia is a “major grain producer, on a par with India and China,” and when it comes to wheat, the country has been the “largest exporter in recent years.”

He also pointed out that agro-industrial exports reached over $37 billion last year.

Medvedev unveiled plans to sell “food and crops only to our friends” in rubles and their respective national currencies. According to him, Russia has “a lot of friends” outside of Europe and North America.

The former president suggested that Russia should not “ship [its] food and crops to unfriendly parties.” According to his plan, the government will prioritize the internal food market, with particular focus on price control. Medvedev added that Russian farmers could expect “massive and systemic” support.

Following the reunification of Crimea with Russia in 2014, the US and EU slapped Moscow with economic sanctions. Russia responded with counter-measures, including a ban on certain food imports. The West has imposed more sanctions since February 24, 2022, when Russia launched its military offensive against Ukraine. The Kremlin has vowed that no hostile step will remain unanswered.

On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree, according to which gas exports to “unfriendly countries” (those that have imposed economic sanctions on Russia) will have to be paid for in rubles starting from April 1. Among these countries are the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Switzerland, all 27 nations of the EU, and several others.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday that Russia could start selling other hydrocarbons and commodities for rubles as well, noting that it’s an “idea that should definitely be worked on.”

China calls for ‘objective’ analysis of Russia’s claims about US biolabs in Ukraine

A “fair, objective and professional” assessment is needed for the materials Moscow has provided, the Chinese Foreign Ministry says

The international community should provide a “fair, objective and professional” assessment of Russia’s allegations regarding alleged US military laboratories in Ukraine, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said.

In March, Russia shared evidence obtained from laboratories across Ukraine that apparently confirms that Pentagon-funded labs were working on “biological weapons components,” and may have been connected to suspicious outbreaks of dirofilariasis, tuberculosis, and avian flu over the past several years. According to the latest data revealed by military spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov on March 30, Kiev was planning to use drones to deploy pathogens against the Donbass republics, as well as Russia itself.

Speaking at a regular press briefing on Friday, Zhao said the US has still not come up with a “constructive response” to Russia’s statements, and called on the international community to give serious consideration to Moscow’s claims.

He said, as quoted by TASS, that China “would welcome a fair, objective and professional assessment by the international community of the documents provided by Russia on the basis of the UN mechanisms and the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons and on Their Destruction.”

China has consistently encouraged the US to make public all information about its biolabs. Two weeks ago, China’s permanent representative to the UN, Zhang Jun, told the UN Security Council that following the revelation by Russia of the newly discovered documents, “the party concerned should respond to questions, and offer timely and comprehensive clarifications to remove the doubts of the international community.”

Several days prior to that, Beijing disclosed for the first time the alleged number of US-controlled biolabs. Saying that laboratories in Ukraine are just the “tip of an iceberg,” Zhao revealed that the Pentagon “controls 336 biological laboratories in 30 countries around the world.” Noting that the US “has been exclusively obstructing” the establishment of an independent verification mechanism, the Foreign Ministry spokesman called on the US to “publish the relevant details as soon as possible, including which viruses are stored and which research has been carried out.”

The US has long claimed that allegations about military-funded biolaboratories in Ukraine are ‘Russian disinformation’. In March, however, US diplomat Victoria Nuland testified before the Senate that “biological research laboratories in Ukraine” did exist, and that Washington was working with Kiev “to ensure that the materials of biological research do not fall into the hands of Russian forces.”

In a new round of counter-sanctions, Moscow hits European government, parliament, public and media figures

The top EU leadership has been banned from entering Russia in response to the bloc’s “unfriendly actions,” which, as the Russian Foreign Ministry claims, are “driving the relationship with Russia into a deadlock.”

In a lengthy statement, issued on Thursday, the ministry said that the EU sanctions policy, which has been introduced in response to Moscow’s military operation in Ukraine, “oversteps all limits.” The intention of the EU, the statement says, is clear: “To force Russia to renounce its vital interests.”

“The EU’s actions are not only driving the relationship with Russia into a deadlock, but are similarly jeopardizing the wellbeing and security of its own citizens, as well as the stability of the global financial and economic system,” the ministry said.

Therefore, Moscow, on the basis of reciprocity, “is significantly expanding the list of representatives of EU Member States and institutions who will be denied entry to the Russian Federation.”

The ministry specified that the restrictions would apply to the “top leadership of the EU, a number of European commissioners and heads of EU military bodies, as well as the overwhelming majority of members of the European Parliament that have advanced anti-Russian policies.”

The blacklist also includes government and parliament members of some EU member states, as well as public and media figures who are, from Moscow’s point of view, “personally responsible for promoting illegal anti-Russian sanctions, inflaming Russophobic sentiments, and infringing on the rights and freedoms of Russian-speakers.”

The relevant note has been handed to the Delegation of the European Union in Moscow, the ministry said.

It concluded the statement by reaffirming that “any further unfriendly action by the EU and its Member States will inevitably be met with a forceful response.”

The statement echoes Thursday’s speech by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who said some Western politicians are allegedly prepared to sacrifice their citizens’ interests in order to “enjoy the good graces of their overseas master and overlord [by which he means the US].” He also said the sanctions that are being imposed on Moscow now were “prepared in advance” and “would have been imposed in any case.”

Considering the fact that the West has been imposing restrictions against Russia for many years, there is no point thinking that this approach would change any time soon, Putin emphasized.

Since the beginning of Russia’s military offensive in Ukraine on February 24, the EU has announced several rounds of sanctions personally targeting President Vladimir Putin, top government officials, and businessmen. Brussels banned iron and steel imports from Russia, outlawed the sale of aircraft, spare parts and equipment to Russian airlines, as well as the supplies of goods and technological equipment for the oil, aviation, and space industries. EU citizens have been banned from investing in the Russian energy sector. Dozens of EU companies have halted or stopped operations in Russia.

Moscow considers the move unlawful and unjustified and has imposed its own counter measures.

Two attack helicopters entered Belgorod Region, Russia, the governor says

The fire at an oil facility in Belgorod Region, Russia was caused by a Ukrainian air raid, Governor Vyacheslav Galdkov said on Friday morning. The incident was reported amid Russia’s military campaign in the neighboring country.

Gladkov said the terminal was struck by “two Ukrainian military helicopters that have entered the territory of Russia while flying at low altitude.” The exact details of the incident are yet to be clarified.

The governor said two workers received non-life threatening injuries. The authorities began evacuating people from nearby areas.

Videos from the scene show a large fire raging at the facility.

The governor called the situation with the fuel supply “stable,” adding that there “will be no fuel shortages.”

Energy Minister Nikolay Shulginov similarly said that the fire will not cause shortages or price hikes, adding that Belgorod gas stations will receive fuel from other regions if necessary.

RIA Novosti quoted the emergency services as saying there was a risk of the fire spreading to additional oil storages.

Emergency services said they found no increase of toxic fumes in the air.

Kremlin responds to alleged Ukraine attack on Russian oil depot

The reported Ukrainian air raid doesn’t bode well for future negotiations

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said that the reported Ukrainian helicopter raid on an oil terminal does not help future peace talks with Kiev. The facility, which is located in the Belgorod region, caught fire on Friday amid Russia’s ongoing military campaign in Ukraine.

“Of course, this cannot be perceived as creating comfortable conditions for continuing the talks,” Peskov claimed, adding that everything was being done to prevent disruptions in fuel supplies in the region.

Peskov added that President Vladimir Putin was briefed on the matter

The oil terminal caught fire in the region bordering Ukraine on Friday morning. Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov claimed that two Ukrainian helicopters crossed the border and struck the site. Two workers received non-life threatening injuries.

The Russian Defense Ministry has not publicly commented on the incident. The Ukrainian General Staff similarly did not comment on the allegations in its regular reports on Friday.

The news website Segodnya.ua, however, quoted a Ukrainian military source as saying that the explosion at the terminal occurred “due to negligence, or to conceal someone’s corruption.”

Moscow attacked the neighboring state in late February, following Ukraine’s failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements signed in 2014, and Russia’s eventual recognition of the Donbass republics in Donetsk and Lugansk. The German and French brokered protocols had been designed to regularize the status of those regions within the Ukrainian state.

Russia has now demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join the US-led NATO military bloc. Kiev says the Russian offensive was completely unprovoked and has denied claims it was planning to retake the two republics by force.

Eddy Grant’s legal counsel, Wallace E.J. Collins, who is a leading copyright authority, sent a cease and desist letter to the Donald Trump campaign, which said that Grant is the songwriter and artist of the musical composition and sound recording of Electric Avenue.

“You have made an unauthorized use of our copyrighted work in connection with the political campaign of Donald Trump.”

The letter continues, “As a result of your wrongful unauthorized Infringing Use in connection with your controversial political campaign, substantial damage and irreparable harm has occurred and will continue to occur to my client and his reputation as an artist when affiliated in any way with your campaign.”

Attorney Collins said that his client has always had a reputation for standing for truth and justice for all. (This) will be seriously undermined by any affiliation with the name Trump in this political context. Such damage will extend to the value of my client’s musical catalogue, Mr. Collins wrote to the Trump campaign.

He added that the Trump campaign’s willful unauthorized use, makes the Trump campaign liable for statutory damages as set forth in the law.

The fact that such infringement has been knowing and intentional, subjects the Trump campaign to additional penalties under the copyright laws of the United States.

“My client will also seek injunctive relief and additional monetary damages and legal fees in connection with such an infringement.”

The Guyanese musical great and superstar is just one in a line of musicians demanding that Trump and or his campaign, cease and desist using his words and music for political purposes.

The Trump campaign used the song in a video criticizing Democratic Presidential candidate, Joe Biden.

The animated video, posted to the personal Twitter account of White House Deputy Chief of Staff, Dan Scavino, plays unflattering audio quotes from Biden set to the tune of Electric Avenue, states Celebrity Access.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - A Louisville woman who was arrested back in 2019 on human trafficking charges involving minors with her husband has been sentenced to federal prison.

Monica Bradley was sentenced on Tuesday to more than 21 years in prison followed by a life term of supervised release for charges of production and possession of child pornography, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Over the course of multiple years, Bradley had produced and possessed pornographic images of five child victims, according to court documents.

One of the victims was taken by Bradley to her husband, Curtis Bradley, with the intent he would engage in sexual contact with the child. Monica Bradley was then compensated with cash and drugs.

The incidents began when the victim was only 11 years old. Documents state Curtis Bradley had assaulted the victim more than 100 times.

Curtis Bradley was sentenced to 50 years in federal prison on March 4.

“We will continue to aggressively prosecute predators who sexually exploit the most vulnerable individuals in our communities, the children,” United States Attorney Michael A. Bennett said in a release. “I commend the outstanding work of AUSAs Zimdahl and Tieke, HSI Nashville, LMPD, and our partnership with the Jefferson County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. As a result of a combined effort, the defendant faces a very significant prison sentence without the chance of parole.”

The investigation was handled by the United States Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations and the Louisville Metro Police Department.

A mother-of-three from Las Vegas has been accused of repeatedly trying to smother her newborn baby daughter with a blanket because she thought the infant, whom she delivered in the toilet at her relatives’ home, was 'probably evil.'

Ashely Hollingsworth, 22, was arrested on Wednesday on charges of attempted murder and child abuse.

According to records, police responded to MountainView Hospital on Sunday morning for a report of a baby girl who had been dropped off at the facility by her mother.

The baby's father told police that Hollingsworth gave birth in the bathroom of a Las Vegas home on Saturday night, and her family then transported the mother and child to the hospital, but the new mom refused to go inside and ran away, despite bleeding profusely.

Hollingsworth’s aunt and uncle told detectives that they discovered her newborn baby in the toilet in their guest bathroom, reported Las Vegas Review-Journal.

According to the woman's uncle, on the way to the hospital, he heard the infant stop crying and found Hollingsworth pressing a blanket to her daughter's face. He said she tried to smother the baby twice before he took the child away from Hollingsworth.

When they arrived at MountainView Hospital, Hollingsworth fled, but she was found two hours later in the vicinity with a large wound on her head and blood on her pants. She told police that she was 'beat up by a rock,' but they concluded that the injuries were self-inflicted.

n her booking photo, the 22-year-old woman appeared with two massive purple bruises around her eyes and swelling on her face.

Hollingsworth was taken to University Medical Center for treatment and was questioned by the police again on Tuesday, telling them that she had two older children under age 5 who lived in California with their father.

Hollingsworth has an unspecified medical condition but said she has not been taking her medication during her latest pregnancy.

During the interview with the police, Hollingsworth 'continuously talked about prophecies and other religious ideations,' and said she believed her baby was 'probably evil.'

'After seeing the baby's eyes, smelling what she described as an abnormal scent, and the baby grunting at her, Ashely decided to wrap the blanket around the baby's head,' the report stated, according to News10.

As of Friday, Hollingsworth remained jailed without bail pending her arraignment on April 4.

Media’s ‘7-hour Gap’ Story in White House Logs Turns Out to be Hoax: CNN

The establishment media were abuzz this week with stories about a “seven-hour gap” in White House switchboard logs on January 6, but on Thursday night it emerged that the gap was likely the result of using ordinary landlines and cell phones.

Documents turned over to the United States House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack, and then leaked to the media, suggested that there was a gap that could have been caused by President Donald Trump or his aides suppressing information.

“A 7-hour gap in Trump’s calls evokes a missing spot on Nixon’s tapes,” the Washington Post reported breathlessly, recalling the 18-minute gap in President Richard Nixon’s White House tapes that ultimately led him to resign his presidency in 1974.

The Post‘s left-wing opinion columnist Greg Sergeant suggested the absent Trump phone logs were “worse than Watergate”:

In another bid for the “Worse than Watergate” files, it turns out there is a seven-hour gap in Donald Trump’s phone logs on the day of the insurrection attempt. According to documents obtained by The Post and CBS News, there is no record of then-President Trump’s calls on Jan. 6, 2021, from just after 11 a.m. to shortly before 7 p.m.

That means there’s a big black hole in the record when it comes to Trump’s conversations throughout the period during which the mob assaulted the U.S. Capitol and violence raged over several hours.

The documents, which were turned over to the House select committee examining Jan. 6, do show that Trump had many calls before 11 a.m. and after 6 p.m. that were apparently related to the coup effort. That suggests Trump held many calls related to the insurrection between those two times that are not officially accounted for.

Sargent speculated that the reluctance of Trump aides to cooperate with the one-sided January 6 probe added fuel to the story.

But it turns out to have been something of a hoax. As CNN reported on Thursday evening, citing a source inside the January 6 investigation, there were no missing pages in the switchboard logs and that there was a more likely, innocent explanation.

That said, the @January6thCmte still wants to know who Trump was talking to and what he was doing and not doing during the attack. There are other phone logs and records they can check and ask for. This simply speaks to Trump not using the WH switchboard to place calls.

In its story on the phone logs, CNN — using six reporters — reported that the so-called gap was not, in fact, unusual:

The mystery of the seven-hour gap has fueled furious speculation as to why calls are missing. That includes allegations that Trump was using “burner phones” (which he has denied) or that the logs were purposely suppressed.

But the gap might have a less mysterious explanation.

According to multiple sources familiar with Trump’s phone behavior and the White House switchboard records, the January 6 log reflects Trump’s typical phone habits. He mainly placed calls through the switchboard when he was in the residence but rarely used it when he was in the Oval Office. The fact the log does not show calls on January 6, 2021, from the Oval Office is not unusual, said the sources, because Trump typically had staff either place calls directly for him on landlines or cell phones. Those calls would not be noted on the switchboard log.

CNN also noted, citing a former aide to President Barack Obama, that Obama’s calls were also frequently not in the record.

Thus, despite the Post‘s suggestion that the “gap” was “worse than Watergate,” the story seems to have ended the same way other “worst than Watergate” hoaxes about Trump, like the “Russia collusion” conspiracy theory, have ended: by being debunked.

Despite puncturing the bubble about the seven-hour gap, CNN still began its article by reminding readers that Trump phoned Vice President Mike Pence that day, noting that the call is not in the records — perhaps because it was made by cell phone.

A record $31 million award to a mom and pop bakery that accused a liberal Ohio college of ruining its business with false accusations of racism has been upheld by a state appeals court.

Gibson's Bakery, a 135-year-old family business near the campus of Oberlin College, was initially awarded more than $40 million in punitive and compensatory damages in the aftermath of a 2016 incident in which the owner's son confronted three black Oberlin students who were stealing wine from the store. Although the suspects were arrested and later admitted they were shoplifting, the episode touched off school-sanctioned protests and accusations of racism that crippled the store's business.

Jury Finds Xiaoqing Zheng Conspired with Individuals in China to Steal GE’s Trade Secrets Knowing or Intending to Benefit the Government of China

Yesterday, a federal jury convicted a New York man of conspiracy to commit economic espionage following a four-week jury trial.

According to court documents and evidence presented at trial, Xiaoqing Zheng, 59, of Niskayuna, was employed at GE Power & Water in Schenectady, New York, as an engineer specializing in sealing technology. He worked at GE from 2008 until the summer of 2018. The trial evidence demonstrated that Zheng and others in China conspired to steal GE’s trade secrets surrounding GE’s steam and gas turbine technologies, knowing or intending to benefit the People’s Republic of China and one or more foreign instrumentalities, including China-based companies that research, develop, and manufacture parts for turbines.

“Zheng conspired to steal trade secrets from his employer, GE, and transfer this information to his business partner in China, so they could enrich both themselves and companies receiving support from the PRC government,” said Assistant Attorney General Matthew G. Olsen of the Justice Department’s National Security Division. “This is the kind of exploitation of our economy and open society that the Department will continue to counter relentlessly.”

“Dr. Zheng used his status as a trusted engineer with GE to conspire to commit economic espionage on behalf of the People’s Republic of China,” said U.S. Attorney Carla B. Freedman for the Northern District of New York. This conviction should send a strong message that the FBI will continue to vigorously investigate economic espionage cases and pursue prosecution in partnership with the United States Attorney’s Office to ensure the protection of American technology and American jobs.”
