Biden climate envoy Kerry says Trump administration 'lied to the American people' on climate change

"Years were wasted with an administration that lied to the American people," Kerry said.

President Biden's global climate change envoy John Kerry says the Trump administration "lied to the American people" about climate change and set back U.S. efforts to cut carbon emissions and reducing global warming.

"The scientists told us two years ago we have 12 years within which we have to make the most critical decisions to avoid the worst consequences of the climate crisis," Kerry said Wednesday during a Washington Post Live event. "Two of those years were wasted with an administration that lied to the American people and never bought into the science."

The former senator, secretary of state and Democratic presidential candidate spoke one day before President Biden convenes a global climate summit during which he is expected to announce plans to cut in half U.S. greenhouse emissions by 2030.

Kerry also said he hopes administration's attempts to replace the fossil fuel industry with new green technology would inspire a movement similar to the space race and the industrial revolution.

"This is the greatest moment of transformation of our economy in our lifetime, certainly, and we need to seize it," he said.

Russia Behind 'Directed Energy' Attacks On US Troops In Syria: Pentagon Officials

In the newest dramatic allegations against suspected Russian malfeasance, the Department of Defense (DoD) on Thursday revealed that it believes the Russian military targeted US troops in Syria with 'directed energy attacks' in order to make them ill and unable to conduct normal operations.

Apparently some US troops occupying the country began reporting "flu-like symptoms" which caused the DoD to investigate possible linkage to microwave or directed energy weapons on the battlefield of Syria. Politico reports that "officials identified Russia as a likely culprit, according to two people with direct knowledge of the matter."

DoD officials said they briefed top lawmakers on intelligence which they say points to Russia being behind a series of these suspected high tech attacks. This follows a major investigation being conducted since last year of similar mysterious attacks against US personnel across the globe.

Controversy has raged since late 2016 into 2017 and the "Havana syndrome" story, which involved some 50 diplomatic officials working at the US Embassy in Cuba coming down with strange illnesses and symptoms which many blamed on high tech 'sonic attacks' of some sort.

Personnel reported experiencing everything from vomiting to concussions to chronic headaches to minor brain injuries. But analysts and scientists have been deeply divided on the issue, with speculation ranging from high pitched sounds from crickets or even mass hysteria causing the illness.

At this point the original Havana episode is believed to include the clearest evidence yet of a large group of people reporting to have experienced bizarre symptoms, and yet even this has failed to produce known evidence that Russia or a US enemy zapped Americans with an advanced microwave weapon.

'Family separation is still occurring'

Nearly 500 acts of violence have been perpetrated against asylum-seekers who were denied entry into the U.S. via the southern border since Joe Biden was elected president, according to a joint report from Human Rights First, Haitian Bridge Alliance, and Al Otro Lado.

The report titled, "Failure to Protect: Biden Administration Continues Illegal Trump Policy to Block and Expel Asylum Seekers to Danger" found at least 492 cases of violent acts targeting asylum-seekers who had been blocked from requesting asylum protection at the U.S.-Mexico border or were expelled. The violent attacks include kidnapping, rape, and assault.

The numbers are based on "more than 110 in-person interviews and an electronic survey of more than 1,200 asylum-seekers in the Mexican state of Baja California," according to the Intercept.

The report found that "family separation is still occurring, and the illegal expulsions policy continues to endanger unaccompanied children," and noted that some children are being expelled from the U.S. "without the proper screening for trafficking risk."

"CBP continues to separate children from their adult relatives who are expelled to Mexico — increasing the number of children held alone in influx facilities and shelters," Human Rights First stated.

CBP stated there were 18,890 unaccompanied children encountered by U.S. border authorities in March — a 100% increase over February. There were also 53,000 family unit aliens encountered at the southern border in March, and over 172,000 people total attempted to enter the United States.

Human Rights First interviewed over 150 asylum-seekers in March and April, none of which were "referred to apply for asylum or given a protection screening by U.S. immigration officers before being expelled to Mexico."

"The Biden administration has blocked and expelled asylum-seeking families and adults from Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cuba, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Russia, Somalia, Venezuela, and Yemen. African, Caribbean, and other Black asylum seekers and migrants have been left particularly vulnerable by this policy, suffering anti-Black violence and discrimination while stranded at the border for months or even years," Human Rights First reported. "A survey by Al Otro Lado in Baja California reveals that 61% of Haitian asylum seekers blocked from U.S. asylum protections were victims of crime while in Mexico."

"Since February 2021, the U.S. government has sent 27 airplanes with over 1,400 Haitian adults and children, including asylum seekers, directly back to Haiti despite escalating political instability and violence," Human Rights First reported.

Instead, the Food and Drug Administration is considered likely to attach a warning to the vaccine’s label to inform health practitioners — and the public — about the exceedingly uncommon, but dangerous possible side effect.

Federal health officials are waiting to act until they hear from a committee of outside experts who advise the C.D.C. The committee is scheduled to meet on Friday to discuss whether to recommend lifting, extending or modifying the pause that was initiated on April 13.

“We know that it’s not a good thing to leave the pause going for any longer than it absolutely has to go for,” Dr. Peter Marks, the Food and Drug Administration’s top vaccine regulator, said Thursday, adding that a protracted pause could contribute to greater vaccine hesitancy. “Once, essentially, the adequate discussion has occurred, we’re prepared to move as quickly as we possibly can.”

Most of the 300-plus people charged with participating in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot have been released while they await trial, but dozens of those deemed to be dangerous, flight risks or at high risk of obstructing justice were ordered held without bond. D.C. jail officials later determined that all Capitol detainees would be placed in so-called restrictive housing — a move billed as necessary to keep the defendants safe, as well as guards and other inmates. But that means 23-hour-a-day isolation for the accused, even before their trials begin.

And such treatment doesn’t sit well with Warren or Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), two of the chamber’s fiercest critics of solitary confinement.

“Solitary confinement is a form of punishment that is cruel and psychologically damaging,” Warren said in an interview. “And we’re talking about people who haven’t been convicted of anything yet.”

President Joe Biden and his Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) issued orders to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity — orders that apparently require Christian schools to place biological males who identify as female with females in women’s dorms. Last week, the College of the Ozarks, a Christian college in Missouri, sued to block the administration from forcing the school to violate its religious convictions on these and other issues.

“The government cannot and should not force schools to open girls’ dorms to males based on its politically motivated and inappropriate redefinition of ‘sex,'” Julie Marie Blake, senior counsel at Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), the Christian law firm representing the college, said in a statement on the lawsuit. “Women shouldn’t be forced to share private spaces—including showers and dorm rooms—with males, and religious schools shouldn’t be punished simply because of their beliefs about marriage and biological sex.”

“Government overreach by the Biden administration continues to victimize women, girls, and people of faith by gutting their legal protections, and it must be stopped,” Blake concluded.

On his very first day in office, Biden issued an executive order banning “discrimination” on the basis of gender identity. The order requires schools to open girls’ restrooms, locker rooms, and sports leagues to biological boys. It requires health care plans to pay for experimental transgender “treatments” and requires doctors and hospitals to perform them.

This order enforced the Supreme Court’s ruling in Bostock v. Clayton County (2020), which redefined “discrimination on the basis of sex” in federal law to include discrimination on the basis of gender identity. As Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito warned in his dissent, this move threatens “freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and personal privacy and safety.”

Less than a month after Biden’s order, Jeanine Worden, the acting assistant secretary for Fair Housing & Equal Opportunity at HUD, issued a directive applying Biden’s ban on discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity to entities under FHEO, which includes local authorities that would regulate the College of the Ozarks. Importantly, Worden had neither been officially nominated by Biden nor confirmed by the Senate at the time.

Under the Fair Housing Act (FHA), “testers” may “pose as renters or purchasers” without any intention to rent or purchase real estate in order to ensure the application of fair housing laws. In its lawsuit, the College of the Ozarks notes that in compliance with Worden’s directive, some HUD entities “will send testers to … entities such as the College, to determine if they discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.”

FHA is extremely broad. It does not only prohibit discrimination on the basis of categories such as sex (historically interpreted to mean biological sex as in male or female), but it also prohibits public notices announcing that landlords or colleges will engage in such discrimination.

When the Biden administration unilaterally redefined discrimination on the basis of sex to include discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity — contrary to the plain meaning of the word “sex” as Congress understood it when it amended the FHA to bar sex discrimination in 1974 — it effectively rewrote the law without observing the legal process for issuing a new regulation, the lawsuit alleges.

Police in Columbus, Ohio have released more details about the death of a 16-year-old girl, Ma’Khia Bryant, who was shot by an officer yesterday.

At a media conference this afternoon, the officer in question was identified as Nicholas Reardon, who has been a member of the police force since December of 2019.

Authorities also released the audio from the 911 call that drew police to the location of the shooting.

In that phone call, placed at 4:32pm, a female voice can be heard telling the dispatcher that people are “over here trying to fight us, trying to stab us, trying to put their hands on our grandma”.

“We need a police officer over here now,” the voice says. There are sounds of confrontation in the background.

The first officers arrived on the scene at 4:44pm.

Footage from Mr Reardon’s body camera shows him exiting his vehicle and walking up on an apparent confrontation involving multiple women.

“What’s going on? What’s going on?” he asks.

Seconds later, one of the women is pushed onto the footpath in front of him. Ma’Khia is then seen rushing at another woman, who is dressed in a pink tracksuit. She is brandishing a knife in her right hand.

“Hey, get down, get down, get down!” Mr Reardon shouts, drawing his gun.

He then shoots the 16-year-old, firing four times.

“You shot my baby,” a male bystander tells Mr Reardon.

“She had a knife, she just went at her,” the officer responds.

“She’s just a f***ing kid,” the man says.

A few moments later, one of the men at the scene asks why Mr Reardon opened fire.

“She came at her with a knife,” he says.

Ma’Khia was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 5:21pm.

At this afternoon’s media conference, authorities also released the body cam footage from other officers at the scene.

“She came after me with a knife. So he got her,” a woman tells one of the officers.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations is now examining the shooting, and will determine whether Mr Reardon did anything wrong.

“The important step now is an independent and transparent investigation. We will assist them, but we will not interfere in any process that they have. Our role is to provide them the information that they request,” interim Police Chief Michael Woods told the media.

“We will not provide input, we will allow them to conduct their investigation.”

Mayor Andrew Ginther also spoke, stressing the need for police to be “transparent” without compromising the independent investigation.

“We don’t yet have all of the facts, but we do know that a 16-year-old girl tragically died last night,” said Mr Ginther.

“We need to be careful about not compromising the investigation. We believe that transparency with the public is the utmost priority during this difficult time.

Beijing has issued a fresh attack on Australia, describing the decision to tear up the divisive “Belt and Road” agreement as “suicidal”.

China has lashed out at Australia over the cancelled Belt and Road Initiative deal, branding the move a “suicidal attack” and vowing to respond with “potentially crippling countermeasures”.

The latest stoush kicked off on Wednesday night, when Foreign Affairs Minister Marise Payne announced that two Belt and Road agreements would be axed under new laws.

The deal was cancelled after the Morrison government claimed the agreements did not meet the national interest test.

Ms Payne said in a statement she found the agreements to be “inconsistent with Australia’s foreign policy or adverse to our foreign relations”.

“I will continue to consider foreign arrangements notified under the Scheme,” the statement reads.

“I expect the overwhelming majority of them to remain unaffected. I look forward to ongoing collaboration with states, territories, universities and local governments in implementing the Foreign Arrangements Scheme.”

What is the Belt and Road Initiative?

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) evolved out of the 2013 One Belt One Road plan, which was devised by China as a means of establishing a large, global network of trade routes with many nations.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews attended a summit on the matter in Beijing in 2017, with the state inking a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with China in October 2018 to join dozens of other nations in the BRI.

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas used a footnote in a murder case to call out his liberal colleagues' apparent double standard for minors, questioning why teenagers should have an absolute right to abortion but can't be held fully responsible for homicide. “When addressing juvenile murderers, this Court has stated that ‘children are different’ and that courts must consider ‘a child’s lesser culpability,” Thomas said in the footnotes of his opinion in Jones v. Thomas cited multiple cases in which justices argued that minors were mature enough to be able to decide whether or not to get an abortion, a standard they suddenly abandon when assessing their culpability for violent crimes. One such ruling from nine years ago held that life sentences for juveniles convicted of homicide were in violation of the Constitution’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment, reasoning that such mandatory sentences failed to take into account a minor’s immaturity at the time the crime was committed. That ruling came up again in the case of Brett Jones, a Mississippi man who was 15 years old when he used a knife to kill his grandfather during an argument. In a 6-3 ruling Thursday, the court declined to impose new restrictions on sentencing minors to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Jones argued that the previous ruling required courts to assess whether a minor offender was "permanently incorrigible," but the 6-3 decision found that such a requirement was unnecessary. Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who was joined by Justices Stephen Breyer and Elena Kagan, dissented, arguing the state should be required to assess if minor offenders have demonstrated the maturity and the ability to rehabilitate themselves. "The question is whether the state, at some point, must consider whether a juvenile offender has demonstrated maturity and rehabilitation sufficient to merit a chance at life beyond the prison in which he has grown up. For most, the answer is yes," Sotomayor wrote.

Supreme Court Makes It Easier to Impose Life Without Parole on Juvenile Murderers

Conservative justices signal shift away from clemency for youth offenders

The Supreme Court on Thursday made it easier to sentence juvenile murderers to life in prison without parole, ruling against a Mississippi inmate who killed his grandfather when he was 15.

The question was whether courts must find that a youth offender has no capacity for change before sentencing him to life without parole. Writing for a majority of five, Justice Brett Kavanaugh said the answer is no, a defeat for defendants across the country fighting life without parole sentences imposed while they were minors.

Thursday's decision breaks with a modern trend of clemency toward youth offenders at the High Court. It also reflects a continuing rightward shift in cruel and unusual punishment cases. The conservative justices signaled a similar rupture with precedents that favor death row inmates in a 2019 case about capital punishment.

The inmate in Thursday's case, Brett Jones, murdered his 67-year-old grandfather Bertis Jones in August 2004 by stabbing him eight times with a steak knife. The pair had argued earlier in the day when Bertis discovered that Brett's girlfriend had secretly been staying at the family home in Shannon, Miss. Jones was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in May 2005.

The Supreme Court ruled that mandatory life without parole sentences for juvenile murderers are unconstitutional in the 2012 case Miller v. Alabama. Miller left open the possibility of life without parole for juvenile defendants who are "permanently incorrigible." Jones caught a break four years later in 2016, when the Court in Montgomery v. Louisiana said Miller also applied to juvenile murderers sentenced before 2012. Jones obtained a second sentencing hearing.

At the resentencing, Jones told the judge he grew up to be a better person and did his best to live a decent life in prison.

"I can't change what was already done. I can just try to show … I've become a grown man," Jones said.

The judge again sentenced Jones to life in prison.

Now before the High Court, Jones said his life sentence ought to be lifted because the sentencing judge didn't make any official finding that he is "permanently incorrigible." Kavanaugh said Miller and Montgomery "squarely rejected such a requirement." As long as the sentence isn't mandated by state law and the court has the option of imposing a lesser sentence, it is constitutional, he wrote.

"The resentencing in Jones's case complied with those precedents because the sentence was not mandatory and the trial judge had discretion to impose a lesser punishment in light of Jones's youth," Kavanaugh wrote.

He also noted that judges in death penalty cases aren't required to explain on the record why they accept or reject reasons for leniency. It would be "incongruous" to require that for life sentences, he said.

Remembering the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald

40 years ago, on November 10, 1975 the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald sank on Lake Superior. All 29 crew members died.

The Edmund Fitzgerald (sometimes called the Mighty Fitz or Big Fitz) was a Great Lakes bulk cargo vessel that entered service in 1958. The 730 feet long, 75 feet wide vessel was designed to carry taconite pellets (a type of iron ore) from mines near Duluth to iron works in Detroit and Toledo. It was the largest ore carrier on the Great Lakes when it entered service.

The Edmund Fitzgerald suddenly sank during a storm when it was around 17 miles from Whitefish Bay. Although the captain of the Edmund Fitzgerald reported having difficulties during the storm, no distress signals were sent. The entire crew of 29 people died when the vessel sank. No bodies were ever recovered from the wreckage.

Later when the wreck was found, it was discovered that the ship had broken in two. It still sits on the bottom of Lake Superior at 530 feet deep.

Conditions on the Great Lakes can be extremely treacherous and can produce high waves. Steep, short-period waves can be particularly hazardous to large ships such as the Edmund Fitzgerald, especially when they exceed 16 feet (5m) in height, says the University of Michigan.

The height of waves generated on the lakes is primarily a function of wind speed and the fetch, or distance, over which they are generated. Of secondary yet substantial importance is the degree of surface-layer stability present over the lake. Lake Superior is the largest of the Great Lakes in surface area and volume. It has the capacity to contain the water volume of the four other lakes plus three additional Lake Eries. Given its immense size, it is capable of sustaining waves in excess of 33 feet (10m).

The National Transportation Safety Bureau Accident Investigation determined that the probable cause of this accident was the sudden massive flooding of the cargo hold due to the collapse of one or more hatch covers. Before the hatch covers collapsed, flooding into the ballast tanks and tunnel through topside damage and flooding into the cargo hold through non-weathertight hatch covers caused a reduction of freeboard and a list. The hydrostatic and hydrodynamic forces imposed on the hatch covers by heavy boarding seas at this reduced freeboard and with the list caused the hatch covers to collapse.

Contributing to the accident was the lack of transverse weathertight bulkheads in the cargo hold and the reduction of freeboard authorized by the 1969, 1971 and 1973 amendments to the Great Lakes Load Line Regulations.

A redux of the 1970s energy crisis had caused petroleum shortages and price spikes are currently playing out for different reasons in Las Vegas Valley.

Las Vegas social media users complained about Chevron Corporation's gas stations raising fuel costs and even in some areas running out of various types of fuel.

Chevron spokesman Tyler Kruzich told Las Vegas Review-Journal that shortages materialized at gas pumps across Vegas last weekend.

"We are working to resupply those stations as soon as possible," Kruzich said in an emailed statement Monday to the Review-Journal.

One Twitter user said, "What's going on with chevron ? All their gas pumps are shut down I went to three locations already."

Chevron's Twitter account responded by saying: "Hi- Due to limits currently in operation on the pipeline serving the Las Vegas area, fuel deliveries have been impacted. Coupled with the increase in demand in the region due to travel and capacity restrictions being lifted, this has led to limited supplies available at times."

The energy company blames travel and capacity restrictions lifted, resulting in a surge of fuel demand for West Coast states that has outpaced available supply.

Review-Journal spoke with Mat Stanley, of Las Vegas, who said several Chevron locations Monday were entirely out of fuel.

"I went to three Chevron gas stations right by Red Rock Casino, all on Charleston," Stanley said. "All of the gas pumps had a bag that said 'Out of order' and they only had diesel for all three locations. I was very, very shocked."

Las Vegan Wendy Henriquez noticed multiple Chevron gas stations closed and/ or were out of lower-grade fuel.

She said: "When I got to North Las Vegas, I stopped at another Chevron (that) only had 91 and were out of 87 and 89." Normally her fuel costs per tank is around $35 - but this time it cost her $50 because of increased prices with the use of premium fuel.

Review-Journal provided several other accounts of Las Vegans who realized something was wrong when Chevron stations were closed or had limited fuel.

"I usually pay $3.61 a gallon. This one was nearly $4 a gallon," Cindy Preciado said, who stopped at several Chevron locations before find gas. "I was panicking. I only have 34 miles left on my car, and I didn't know if I'm going to be able to make it to work if I drive to more locations. Gas is a necessity and if I have to spend more money, I have no other choice."

The shortage of fuel and price increases in the Vegas area is centric to Chevron locations. All other gas stations are operating within routine operations.

Besides the shortage, Nevadans are paying an average of $3.41 per gallon of regular gasoline, said AAA Nevada spokesman Sergio Avila. Last month, residents paid an average of $3.35 per gallon.

The latest inflation data shows Americans are experiencing some of the fastest consumer price increases in more than a decade. The fuel oil index has increased 20.2% over the last 12 months.

U.S. Military: 32 of 40 Gitmo Detainees Receive 1st Coronavirus Vaccine Dose

The vast majority of the prisoners at the Guantanamo Bay detention center have reportedly received the first dose of the vaccine against the Chinese coronavirus after the U.S. military began offering it early this week.

Of the 40 detainees held at the U.S. military prison, 32 had received the first dose of the two-shot Moderna vaccine as of Tuesday, U.S. Southern Command said, without explaining why the eight remaining men had not received the drug, the Associated Press (AP) reported Tuesday.

U.S. Southern Command, or SOUTHCOM, oversees the American military base in Guantanamo, Cuba.

There is no requirement to inoculate the detainees at the prison, commonly known as Gitmo.

It is unclear if Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (KSM), the mastermind behind the Sept. 11, 2011 attacks, and his four co-conspirators are among the vaccinated prisoners. They are still awaiting trial nearly two decades after they executed the attacks, the deadliest on American soil.

On Monday, the U.S. military resumed the effort to inoculate the detainees, initiated during the last days of the Trump administration, after the Pentagon halted it in response to outcry from the public, including victims of the attacks, and lawmakers, particularly Republicans.

At the time of the criticism, the vaccines were just being rolled out to troops and civilians at the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo and were not widely available to the public in the U.S.

The move to begin vaccinating the prisoners coincided with President Joe Biden’s deadline for states to start inoculating all Americans older than 16 and all adults at the U.S. military base in Cuba.

Citing an official who spoke on condition of anonymity, the New York Times reported Monday that the Biden administration’s decision to vaccinate the prisoners aims in part to protect the undisclosed number of service members at the facility who had declined the inoculation.

“This is very much about the force protection of our people down there and the ability to move forward with the military commissions,” the official told the Times, adding, “We have a legal obligation under international law to properly vaccinate these detainees.”

Citing an unnamed senior defense official, the Associated Press (AP) added Monday:

The defense official said all 40 men held at the Navy base in Cuba will be offered the vaccination to comply with legal requirements regarding the treatment of prisoners and to help prevent COVID-19 [coronavirus disease] from spreading. Strict quarantine procedures had already sharply curtailed activities at the base and halted legal proceedings for prisoners facing war crime trials, including the men charged in the Sept. 11, 2001, attack.

“Obviously, we don’t want an outbreak of COVID [coronavirus disease] on a remote island with the challenges that would present,” the official told AP ahead of an official announcement.

In 2006, being gay in Poland was dangerous. Moving to the UK was Kubiak’s solution. He could now walk down the street without looking over his shoulder and stroll through parks with his boyfriend. He could kiss a man in public.

"When I left, I thought that the situation for gay, queer and LGBT+ people in Poland would only get better," Kubiak said.

That has, sadly, not been the case.

LGBT+ rights in Poland remain largely unrecognized by the state and the community has no protection from hate crimes or discrimination.

That means, even when Kubiak suffered physical homophobic abuse in the UK, which saw him hospitalized for two days, the police protected him and sought justice under the law. Kubiak believes this would not happen in Poland.

"In the UK, I feel like I am seen and in Poland I feel like I need to hide," he said.

'Protect Our Twins' campaign

Kubiak is the co-founder of Polish Rainbow UK, the country’s longest running Polish LGBT+ support group.

He is also a consultant on a new campaign to pressure UK councils to champion LGBT+ rights and confront their twin towns in Poland who have established themselves as 'LGBT-free zones.'

Called 'Protect Our Twins,' the campaign was started by the Liberal Democrat party in March 2021.

There are roughly 100 municipalities in Poland that have signed charters and passed declarations against LGBT+ ideologies, promoting traditional heterosexual relationships and warning against the immorality of LGBT+ ideology. The areas that have passed such edicts are widely termed 'LGBT-free zones.'

UK towns with Polish twins include Lincoln and Radomsko, Amersham and Krynica-Zdroj, Blackburn and Tarnow, along with dozens more. 'Protect Our Twins' wants these UK towns to speak up for LGBT+ people in Poland and pressure their partner towns to reconsider their policies.

Gareth Lewis Shelton, chair of the LGBT+ Liberal Democrats, is clear the campaign is not a threat from UK towns but a sign of solidarity.

"Geography shouldn't be a barrier to justice and it shouldn't be a barrier to your rights," he told DW. "It’s about recognizing the innate dignity and worth that everybody has."

Via a digital map produced by Atlas Nienawisci, a campaign group based in Poland that has been tracking the establishment of these resolutions since December 2019, it’s possible to see the location of each zone.

Speaking from Krakow, Atlas Nienawisci’s founder Kamil Maczuga says the anti-LGBT+ declarations cover 12.2 million Poles, which is around a third of the population.

"For us, international pressure is important to know we are not fighting alone." Maczuga told DW.

Ordo Iuris Institute is a conservative legal organization responsible for creating some of these zones by passing declarations they call 'The Charter of the Rights of Family.' They deny that 'LGBT-free zones' exist as the charter never mentions the acronym. Instead, they say the charter defends the Polish constitution, promoting "family, marriage, parenthood and motherhood," and the "protection of children against demoralization."

Asked to clarify the meaning of 'demoralization,' the vice president of the Ordo Iuris Institute, Tymoteusz Zych, told DW: "There are many controversial programs of sexual education that are criticsed by scholars and scientists for interfering in the sexuality of children in the wrong way."

"Kids should learn about sexuality and the body," he said. "But it is the way it is being done that must be sensitive."

Adamantly denying that there are any 'LGBT-free zones' in Poland, Zych said international campaigns are part of a fake news conspiracy.

"I want to make it clear, I think no worse harm can be done to Polish LGBT+ communities than to spread fake news from abroad," he said.

"Their activities are about slandering their own country. They think people from the Polish countryside will remain idle but they are not going to remain idle when they are slandered," Zych said.

EU economy 'on crutches,' warns ECB chief Christine Lagarde

Christine Lagarde has said Europe's monetary authority plans to keep interest rates and coronavirus stimulus unchanged. She urged EU members to get their coronavirus recovery fund operational with haste.

European Central Bank chief Christine Lagarde on Thursday said the bloc's economy was still "on crutches" and in need of support from both the central bank and government spending as the eurozone undergoes extended coronavirus lockdowns.

Lagarde said while the bank sees an eventual rebound this year, any steps to phase out its anti-pandemic emergency monetary plan would be "premature."

It is "premature to talk about phasing out PEPP [Pandemic Emergency Purchase Program]," she said during a news conference. According to Lagarde, leaving the PEPP depended on various factors including financing conditions and the inflation outlook.

"We still have a long way to go before we cross the bridge of the pandemic," Lagarde said. "I have referred to the economy as being on crutches, one fiscal crutch and one monetary crutch." She added that the bloc wasn't ready to stand on its own.

Bond-buying to continue as states overspend

Lagarde's announcement comes after Europe's monetary authority left interest rate benchmarks untouched at record lows.

It made no changes to its €1.85 trillion ($2.22 trillion) bond purchase stimulus it says will last at least through March 2022, effectively underwriting government borrowing. Just under half remains to be used in the next months.

Lagarde reiterated that increased inflation this year would not prompt the ECB to tighten policy, adding that the increase was due to "idiosyncratic and temporary factors" and that underlying inflationary pressures "remain subdued."

The ECB is prepared to "adjust all its instruments" when needed, she said.

While the ECB 25-member governing council is encouraged by continued rollout of vaccine programs, "we still have this overall environment of uncertainty'' about when infection numbers and restrictions on business activities and travel will ease, Lagarde said.

"We still see near-term risks tilted to the downside," she added, citing concerns about potentially more contagious coronavirus variants.

Calls for speeding up EU coronavirus recovery fund

Lagarde also appealed to EU members states to urgently get a 750-billion-euro EU coronavirus recovery fund into action.

"This would allow the next generation EU program to contribute to a faster, stronger and more uniform recovery," Lagarde said.

The fund would offer loans and outright grants to EU countries hit hardest by the pandemic.

On Wednesday, Germany's Constitutional Court gave the green light to approve legislation ratifying the fund, dismissing an injunction that was blocking the investment plan. The decision paves the way for its ratification in Germany.

Only 17 out of 27 EU members have ratified it to date however.

The eurozone economy shrank by 6.6% last year, more than at the peak of the financial crisis. Economists estimate that output is not expected to recover to pre-pandemic levels until mid-2022.

Former NFL running back O.J. Simpson, who is perhaps best known for his involvement as a defendant in a certain California murder trial in the 1990s that had significant racial implications, weighed in on the shooting of knife-wielding teenager Ma’Khia Bryant this week, and criticized basketball player Lebron James for stoking outrage about the incident.

“You can’t fight every battle, you can’t,” Simpson said of James. “You gotta pick your battles, I mean, it’s a war that must be fought, but sometimes you need to take your time and be a little more patient before you comment on some of these, um, of these bad incidences that are happening with police departments. Uh, this one, Lebron should have waited.”

Simpson continued, “I’m a little upset with most of the media because they showed us edited versions of what happened with what took place with the girl and the knife. They made it sound as if this was another police officer, uh, overreacting, and killing another young black American.”

“Well, from what I saw when I saw the full tape, the police guy had no choice,” Simpson said. “He responded. We wish he could have pulled a Taser, we wish he could have done it in another way, but in that instance, if he hadn’t done what he did, it appeared to me that another young American would have had her life taken, and hey, I can’t fault what he did.”

As National File reported on Wednesday, James deleted his tweet threatening the officer with “You’re next” after being mocked and humiliated in the tweet replies.

A new video angle released on Thursday show the officer was completely justified:

A new video angle, apparently taken by a porch-mounted security camera, shows that the Columbus, Ohio police officer who shot Ma’Khia Bryant acted within the parameters of proper police procedure. Black Lives Matter and left-wing militants have attempted to use Bryant’s death as an excuse for more riots and looting.

In the footage, Bryant can clearly be seen storming down a driveway, engaging in a verbal altercation with multiple other females, and then taking advantage of an officer being distracted by one female’s fall to lunge at another with a knife.

The officer then engages the threat, saving the girl wearing pink.

Leaders from around the world called on Thursday for cooperation to reduce greenhouse gases towards an eventual goal of net-zero carbon emissions in a bid to tamp down a rapidly warming planet.

Addressing 40 leaders from six continents, summit host US President Joe Biden

cited the need to balance costs and responsibilities, while Chinese President Xi Jinping

underscored the role of developing countries in sustainable development.

In a bid to spur other major polluters to take more ambitious steps, and signal that the US

“This is a moment of peril but also a moment of extraordinary possibilities,” he said in a short speech to world leaders. “We really have no choice. We have to get this done.”

Biden’s commitment compares with a pledge during the Barack Obama administration to cut US greenhouse gas emissions by 26 to 28 per cent below 2005 levels by 2025.

Biden on Wednesday also urged countries to draw on their political capital to come up with meaningful emission-reduction commitments. But the payoff, he added, will be new jobs, industries and technologies.

Washington’s hosting of the summit on Earth Day, and Biden’s commitment to increase financial aid for developing countries that curb emissions, comes after the US signed back on to the Paris Agreement that former president Donald Trump pulled out of. That lapse allowed China

to bolster its status as a global climate leader.

The US military has paused development of a new logistics system for the F-35 fighter jet, pointing to cuts to funding for the problematic plane as the $1 trillion program is plagued by cost overruns, delays and faulty equipment.

During a House Armed Services Committee hearing on Thursday, the F-35 program’s executive officer, Air Force Lieutenant General Eric Fick, said unexpected complications and budget cuts would delay the war plane’s transition from its current Lockheed Martin-designed logistics system, Autonomic Logistics Information System (ALIS), to the upgraded Operational Data Integrated Network (ODIN).

“Despite all the positive activities, we underestimated the complexity of deprecating ALIS capabilities while migrating to ODIN and learned several important lessons,” he said in written testimony, reported by Defense News, adding that the Pentagon will take a “strategic pause” in shifting to the new system, also citing a 42% reduction in research and development funds for 2021.

Fick acknowledged that in previous briefings to lawmakers on ODIN’s progress, he “committed to a very aggressive timeline,” but said it has since become clear those projections would not be possible to meet.

To date, ALIS alone has cost US taxpayers a total of around $1 billion,which would be added to another $471 million set aside for the transition to ODIN.

Restaurants all around the country have struggled to hire workers with customers flooding back as coronavirus restrictions start to subside. As dining rooms begin to reopen and customers return in mass, reports show, restaurant owners are finding it difficult to get servers, hosts and cooks to do the same.

“We’re printing the applications, setting up the interviews, having managers coming in on their days off to do the interviews,” John Lulgjuaj, the owner of Oceanside Beach Bar & Grill, said. “And 80 percent of them don’t show up.”

The lack of staff is hurting earnings even though many have more than enough customers.

“Before COVID, we were open from 11 in the morning to 3 in the morning, 7 days a week,” Slice of Life Pizzeria owner Ray Worrell said. “Right now we’re just open 11 to 11. And we have to keep it at that because we just don’t have the staff to stay open.”

Many are attributing the shortage to increased hiring across the industry, which resulted in all restaurants competing for the same decreased group of workers.

Additionally, many workers switched industries in order to have an income during the pandemic and now have no incentive to return.

“They went to [a] construction site or some other jobs, which pay more,” Texas restaurant owner Zee Aziz said.

However, other theories have been floated as well.

“There have been programs, obviously the PPP program,” Wilmington Downtown Inc. CEO Holly Childs said. “And there have been other programs that have tried to kind of fix the situation, but you kind of wonder too, are the unemployment and continuing that keeping people from applying for the jobs?”

This issue, caused in part by unmonitored federal government unemployment benefits, has led to businesses getting creative to encourage more workers to accept new positions.

“Many of our restaurants and hotels are offering some incentives and some competitive rates for folks to come back,” Lynne Hernandez, South Florida Regional Director of the Restaurant & Lodging Association, noted.

Fast food chains have encountered deficits as well. According to reports, one McDonald’s in Florida has given applicants $50 just for showing up to the interview.

Other restaurants are offering signing bonuses upwards of $2,000 for employees who stay on for 90 days. Even so, the uphill battle to fill out restaurant staff continues.

An Arkansas man shot and killed his 23-year-old pregnant wife and her toddler son before turning the gun on himself in a horrific murder-suicide, authorities said.

Police believe David Wayne Priest, 24, opened fire inside the family’s Van Buren apartment early Sunday during an argument, local outlet 40/29 News reported.

A neighbor living in the other half of their duplex called 911 around 12:40 a.m., and said that bullets had torn through his wall, with one even striking his headboard, right above where he and his wife had been sleeping.

George Floyd mural in Houston defaced with racial slur

A George Floyd mural in Houston was defaced with a racial slur overnight Thursday, a little more than a day after the former police officer who kneeled on his neck was found guilty of murder in Minnesota.

Someone spray-painted the slur followed by "lives don't matter," in a warping of the name of the Black Lives Matter movement.

"Let me tell you something, and I want everybody to understand: Ignorant people with bad hearts and bad motivations — do not give them the power. Don't give them the power," Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said Thursday.

On Tuesday a Minneapolis jury found former police officer Derek Chauvin guilty of murder and manslaughter in the death of Floyd on May 25.
