Former President Donald Trump apparently made a donation to the families of missing members of the United Cajun Navy.

The former president donated $10,000 to the group that organizes private search and rescue missions during natural disasters after the Seacor Power lift boat capsized, Todd Terrell, the president of the United Cajun Navy, told KATC. Terell said that the money would be used to fund the search for seven of the sailors who are still missing.

Trump has been known to make personal donations to a variety of causes. As president, he donated his quarterly paychecks to government agencies, including $100,000 to the Department of Homeland Security to build a wall on the southern border and to the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Health to fight the opioid crisis. In May 2020, the then-president donated his paycheck to the Department of Health and Human Services. The $100,000 donation was earmarked for research on treatments for COVID-19.

At the time of publication, neither the United Cajun Navy nor the office of former President Donald Trump had responded to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.

The vessel capsized off the southern coast of Louisiana on April 13 after winds reached speeds of 70 to 80 miles an hour. Six people were rescued, and authorities have confirmed that six people were killed in the incident. The Coast Guard suspended the search for the vessel on April 19, after a 175-hour search of over 9,200 nautical miles.

After the search was suspended, Capt. Will Watson, the commander of Coast Guard Sector New Orleans, thanked everyone who had assisted with the rescue effort and extended his condolences to the families and friends of the deceased and those who are still missing.

“Suspending a search is one of the toughest decisions the Coast Guard has to make,” Watson said in a statement announcing the suspension. “Our crews searched continuously over the past six days with the hope of bringing the missing crew members home to their loved ones.”

The wife of Dylan Daspit, a sailor on the vessel who is presumed dead, filed a $25 million lawsuit in Texas against the owners of the Seacor Power, alleging violations of maritime law and negligence, according to NBC.

Volunteers for the Cajun Navy have rescued thousands of people during floods and hurricanes in Louisiana and Texas. During Hurricane Katrina, Louisiana state Sen. Nick Gautreaux issued a plea for private owners to come to New Orleans with boats to assist in the rescue effort. Officials expected twenty-five boats; instead, between 350 and 400 boats, and people ready to assist, arrived at the assembly point.

Despite Gautreaux’s warning that people who are “afraid of death” should leave, no one who had arrived abandoned the effort. The Cajun Navy rescued more than 10,000 people who were trapped in New Orleans as the floodwaters rose.

Skilled manual laborer's side project draws praise from independent-minded black and feminist thinkers.

When political data scientist David Shor got fired for sharing research that found peaceful protests were more politically effective than violent protests, a skilled manual laborer in the Mountain West had an idea: Why not create a database of so-called cancelations?

Over the next several months he started researching documented instances of cancel culture across the world and soliciting submissions. His project, CanceledPeople.org (and .com), is approaching 200 listings from the U.S., Canada, U.K., Germany, France, Indonesia and Australia.

The website got a boost of attention earlier this month when Christina Hoff Sommers, the American Enterprise Institute scholar and "Factual Feminist" YouTube host, tweeted about the "well-sourced database" of cancelations.

In an interview with Just the News, the creator pulled back the veil on the project. (He declined to identify himself, except for his geography and field of work, but he did provide screenshots of account records verifying his ownership and operation of the site.)

"Canceled People is not part of a larger organization," he wrote in an email last week. "It's really just a part-time project of mine, with my girlfriend helping out occasionally." Neither is an academic, as might be guessed from the project's research protocols, which lay out the rules for adding and removing people from public view.

The tweet by Sommers triggered 75 submissions, which each take 20-30 minutes to review, the creator said.

"Usually it's fairly clear whether or not they belong there, but some cases are tough," he said. "It would be good to have a panel of experts to discuss and vote on those cases.”

The website's About page says its purpose is "to better understand cancel culture itself as a phenomenon," including how it's affecting "societal norms around free speech that enable democracy to function and flourish." CanceledPeople.org is intended as a resource especially for researchers to "explore and draw their own conclusions."

'Window of acceptable speech seemed to have narrowed drastically overnight'

Before submitting examples of cancelations, users are instructed to read CanceledPeople.org's definition.

Victims must have faced "a coordinated effort to shame them and destroy their reputation," especially targeting their personal or professional relationships.

The cancelation must have succeeded: They were demoted, forced to resign or lost a job, or suffered lost professional or financial opportunities, as a result of "reasonable expression" that was not illegal. Exceptions include Holocaust denial and racial slurs intended to "wound."

Utsuro-bune (虚舟, 'hollow ship'), also Utsuro-fune, and Urobune, was an unknown object that allegedly washed ashore in 1803 in Hitachi province on the eastern coast of Japan. When defining Utsuro-bune, the bune part means "boat" while Utsuro means empty, or hollow. Accounts of the tale appear in three texts: Toen shōsetsu (1825), Hyōryū kishū (1835) and Ume-no-chiri (1844).

According to legend, an attractive young woman aged 18-20 years old, arrived on a local beach aboard the "hollow ship" on February 22, 1803. Fishermen brought her inland to investigate further, but the woman was unable to communicate in Japanese. She was very different from anyone else there. The fishermen then returned her and her vessel to the sea, where it drifted away.

Historians, ethnologists and physicists such as Kazuo Tanaka and Yanagita Kunio have evaluated the "legend of the hollow boat" as part of a long-standing tradition within Japanese folklore.[1][2] Alternatively, certain ufologists have claimed that the story represents evidence for a close encounter with extraterrestrial life.[3]

The best-known versions of the legend are found in three texts:

Toen shōsetsu (兎園小説, "tales from the rabbit garden"), composed in 1825 by Kyokutei Bakin. The manuscript is today on display at the Mukyū-Kai-Toshokan at Machida (Tokyo prefecture).

Hyōryū kishū (漂流紀集, "diaries and stories of castaways"), composed during the Edo period in 1835 by an unknown author. It is today on display at the library of the Tenri University at Tenri in the Nara prefecture.

Ume-no-chiri (梅の塵, "dust of the apricot"), composed in 1844 by Nagahashi Matajirō. It is today on display at the private library Iwase-Bunko-Toshokan (岩瀬文庫図書館) at Nara.

Description in all three books bear similarity, thus they seem to have the same historical origins. The book Toen shōsetsu contains the most detailed version.[1][2][3][4]

Terrorists fired 36 rockets toward Israel from the Gaza Strip overnight with six projectiles intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system, the Israel Defense Forces said Saturday morning.

The barrages were the worst assault from the Strip in many months and while there were no Israeli injuries, the rockets did cause damage in a number of communities.

A Cincinnati area bar has announced that they will not be playing NBA games on their televisions anymore unless LeBron James is ousted from the league.

James has been under fire for threatening an Ohio police officer who fatally shot a teenage girl who was in the process of stabbing someone. The Ohio native posted on Twitter “YOU’RE NEXT #ACCOUNTABILITY” with an hourglass emoji and photo of the officer.

Following James’ threat against the officer, Jay Linneman, the owner of Linne’s Pub in Delhi Township, announced that people can go somewhere else to watch the NBA.

“If anyone wants to watch an NBA game, don’t come to Linnie’s Pub. We will not air them until Lebron James has been expelled from the NBA,” Linneman wrote on the bar’s Facebook page.

The ban caught the attention of James, who quote tweeted an article about it with a snarky reply.

“Aww Damn! I was headed there to watch our game tonight and have a drink! Welp,” he wrote.

James has since deleted the threat and photo of the officer, but posted a new tweet which stated “I’m so damn tired of seeing Black people killed by police. I took the tweet down because its being used to create more hate -This isn’t about one officer. it’s about the entire system and they always use our words to create more racism. I am so desperate for more ACCOUNTABILITY.”

Dozens Arrested After CEO Of Turkish Crypto Exchange Flees With $2 Billion

Turkish authorities have detained 62 people over alleged links to the Istanbul-based cryptocurrency exchange Thodex after its founder fled with a reported $2 billion in investors' assets, Turkish media reported. The suspects were apprehended in raids carried out in eight cities including Istanbul, Anadolu Agency reported on Friday. Police issued arrest warrants for 16 other people.

The arrests come after nearly 400,000 users of a Turkish cryptocurrency exchange were left out of their accounts without being able to withdraw their funds. The platform’s website has been down for several days, while reports suggest its CEO has already fled the country with up to $2 billion.

Bloomberg reported that Thodex, a Turkey-based crypto exchange, has ceased trading, citing an “unspecified partnership transaction.” The trading platform, founded in 2017, issued a statement explaining that all services will remain shut down for about five working days. However, the message reassured customers that they shouldn’t worry about their funds. In retrospect, they should.

Approximately at the same time, though, users started to complain about their inability to access their own assets. As Crypto Potato notes, some took it to Twitter to complain about losing much of their net worth.

NJ Deli With $100 Million Market Cap Linked To Shell Company Whose Stock Also Recently Exploded

Just days ago, we highlighted when fund manager David Einhorn pointed out a small New Jersey deli that was trading with an insane market cap of over $100 million as one of the hallmarks of the bubble the market is in. Einhorn wrote:

"Strange things happen to all kinds of stocks. Last year, on one day in June, the stocks of about a dozen bankrupt companies roughly doubled on enormous volume. Recently, the Wall Street Journal reported a boom in penny stocks.

Someone pointed us to Hometown International (HWIN), which owns a single deli in rural New Jersey. The deli had $21,772 in sales in 2019 and only $13,976 in 2020, as it was closed due to COVID from March to September. HWIN reached a market cap of $113 million on February 8. The largest shareholder is also the CEO/CFO/Treasurer and a Director, who also happens to be the wrestling coach of the high school next door to the deli. The pastrami must be amazing. Small investors who get sucked into these situations are likely to be harmed eventually, yet the regulators – who are supposed to be protecting investors – appear to be neither present nor curious."

After Einhorn's comments went viral, people began digging into the "unusual" story of Hometown Deli and voila, we were granted even more strings to pull on. For example, CNBC reported yesterday that the deli is liked to another company whose stock has skyrocketed over the last year, E-Waste.

E-Waste is a self-admitted shell company and had total assets of about $183,000 and liabilities of $412,400 as of its most recent SEC filings. It posted a net loss of $58,000 for the 9 months ended November 30. The company's own filings state it was created in 2012 “to develop an e-waste recycling business” but “was not successful in its efforts and discontinued that line of business."

It has been a shell company since then and has been looking to “engage in a business combination with a private entity whose business presents an opportunity for its shareholders.”

The Feds Are Coming for Libertarians

On the day that Joe Biden was inaugurated as president, former CIA chief John Brennan announced on television that federal intelligence agencies “are moving in laser-like fashion to try to uncover as much as they can about” various suspect groups, specifically mentioning libertarians.

Libertarians are in the federal crosshairs. Six or seven years ago, there was a lot of prattle about how “the libertarian moment has arrived.” I always knew that was hokum. Since then, there has been a huge increase in hostility to libertarians in Washington DC and elsewhere around the country.

Many libertarians assume they have nothing to fear because they are not engaged in seeking to violently overthrow the government. But the feds will be able to find many other pretexts to target peaceful citizens with supposedly subversive ideas. Federal law already defines “domestic terrorism” far more broadly than most people realize. As the Oregonian recently noted, “Cases categorized as domestic terrorism include allegations of…knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted [government] building or grounds…civil disorders and making threatening communications.” FBI chief Christopher Wray told a Senate Committee that the FBI has 2,000 ongoing domestic terrorism investigations. Wray recognizes the terrorist peril as the ticket to a bigger budget: “We need more agents; we need more analysts.”

The Biden administration is itching for a broad new domestic terrorism law to enable even more crackdowns. Libertarians need to recognize how that definition of terrorism has already mushroomed. Capitol Police acting chief Yogananda Pittman, testifying to Congress, described the January 6 clash at the Capitol as “a terrorist attack by tens of thousands of insurrectionists.” Apparently, anyone who tromped from Trump’s raging speech to the Capitol that day was a terrorist, or at least an “insurrectionist” (“terrorist” spelled with more letters?).

After the clash at the Capitol on January 6, the de facto definition of terrorism seems to be “anything that frightens politicians.” Will we find out too late that the new de facto definition of “domestic terrorist” is “individuals who distrust the feds and own two guns and more than 100 bullets”?

Another codeword for who the feds will target is “extremists.” The Washington Post in January portrayed “domestic extremists” as “a disease that seems to have taken hold in the nation’s nervous system.” Last fall, FBI boss Wray told Congress that among the “underlying drivers for domestic violent extremism” are “perceptions of government or law enforcement overreach.” Libertarians are practically defined by their perception of government as overreaching. After the January 6 clash, Wray portrayed more busts as proof of FBI triumphs: “The more of the arrests that you see, well, that’s obviously good news for everybody that we’re arresting people who need to be arrested.”

In the coming years, the feds may treat libertarians like Muslims were treated after 9/11. Any new crackdown on terrorism will turn into a numbers game in which justice and fair play don’t have a snowball’s chance in hell. Between 2001 and 2006, federal prosecutors charged 10 times as many people in terrorism investigations as they convicted on terrorism-related charges. President Bush declared in 2005 that “federal terrorism investigations have resulted in charges against more than 400 suspects, and more than half of those charged have been convicted.” But only 39 people were convicted on crimes tied to terrorism or national security, a Washington Post analysis found.
