Dominion sues pro-Trump lawyer Sidney Powell, seeking more than $1.3 billion

In a 124-page complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, Dominion said its reputation and resale value have been deeply damaged by a “viral disinformation campaign” that Powell mounted “to financially enrich herself, to raise her public profile, and to ingratiate herself to Donald Trump.” The defendants named in the lawsuit includePowell, her law firm and Defending the Republic,the organization she set up to solicit donations to support her election-related litigation.

The information was presented to D’Urso by a high-level security services official who also stated that Arturo is willing to testify against all individuals and entities involving in the switching of votes. Arturo D’Elia served as IT security consultant at NATO’s Communication and Information Agency in Rome. Biden tells Americans to wear face masks until 2022 just months after saying they’d only need them until April

Despite President Joe Biden declaring this week that the United States will have enough COVID-19 vaccines by the end of the summer to inoculate 300 million Americans, he told Americans that they will need to wear face masks until at least 2022.

Biden visited the National Institutes of Health complex in Bethesda, Maryland, this week. During a news conference with Dr. Anthony Fauci and NIH Director Dr. Francis Collins, Biden informed Americans that he is recommending that they wear masks for the rest of the year.

"I had a little discussion with my friends behind me, Dr. Collins and Dr. Fauci, about whether or not I should take my mask off, and the truth is, although we're more than 10 feet away, I think it's important that I not," Biden said.

"It's critically important the message — and I realize I'm speaking to a vast majority — at least, I hope I am — of the folks out here at NIH," he stated. "You know that wearing this mask through the next year here can save lives — a significant number of lives.

"We lost over 100,000 — 100,000 of our fellow citizens," Biden said. "We're on track to cross 500,000 dead Americans this next month."

"The new strains emerging create immense challenges, and masking is still the easiest thing to do to save lives," he asserted. "But we need everyone to mask up.

"I know it's a pain in the neck, but it's a patriotic responsibility," he said. "We're in the middle of a war with this virus. It's a patriotic responsibility — not only if you care about your family, if you care about your fellow Americans."

Biden exclaimed that the U.S. government had signed the final contracts for 100 million more Moderna and 100 million more Pfizer vaccines. He added, "That means we're now on track to have enough supply for 300 million Americans by the end of July."

Biden noted that the federal government "provided $3 billion to 37 states and territories and tribes to bolster existing vaccination centers and create more of the centers to administer — where we administer the vaccine."

In December, Biden promised Americans a much shorter mask timeline – "Just 100 days."

"On the first day I'm inaugurated, I'm going to ask the public for 100 days to mask," Biden told CNN on Dec. 3. "Just 100 days to mask — not forever, just 100 days. And I think we'll see a significant reduction."

April 30, 2021, will be 100 days after Biden's inauguration on Jan. 20.

US Marshals and ICE ‘Reevaluate’ Operations on Sex Offenders After Biden Deportation Freeze

The United States Marshals Service (USMS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are now working to “reevaluate” enforcement operations on sex offenders after a new executive order issued by President Joe Biden has put them at a distinct disadvantage.

“According to our Sex Offender Investigations Branch chief, the USMS is working with ICE to reevaluate upcoming enforcement operations to ensure compliance with recent Executive Orders issued by the POTUS,” the USMS told The Epoch Times in an emailed statement.

According to Jessica Vaughn, the director of policy studies of the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), asserted in a recently published article that, “ICE had been planning a nationwide operation in partnership with the U.S. Marshals targeting at-large sex offenders, but it was scuttled by the new directive from Biden.

Acting DHS Secretary David Pekoske had issued the new directive (pdf) on Jan. 20 in response to Biden’s executive order, which revoked former President Donald Trump’s Executive Order 13768 signed in 2017. Trump’s executive order had, in part, ordered the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees ICE, to prioritize the removal of illegal aliens who “have been convicted of any criminal offense” or “charged with any criminal offense, where the charge has not been resolved.”

The new DHS directive under the Biden administration had also imposed a 100-day pause on deportations starting Jan. 22 for certain illegal aliens who were ordered to leave, pending the completion of a review of immigration enforcement policies. A federal judge temporarily blocked the order for 14 days on Jan. 26—a victory for Texas, whose attorney general sued the Biden administration over the executive order.

In the directive, the DHS said it would, during the deportation freeze, be prioritizing in part, “Individuals incarcerated within federal, state, and local prisons and jails released on or after the issuance of this memorandum who have been convicted of an ‘aggravated felony,’ as that term is defined in section 101(a) (43) of the Immigration and Nationality Act at the time of conviction, and are determined to pose a threat to public safety.”

The new rules, according to Vaughan, only allow for “a very narrow set of cases of aliens” to be deported—in particular, “only those classified as current ‘aggravated felons,’ or the most serious criminals who are still in the custody of local authorities.” Most prior convictions would not count, and are “categorically excused” if they happened 10 or more years ago, she wrote.

The strict conditions mean that “only a rare few of the criminal aliens arrested throughout the country will be removable, and even many aliens who do have convictions for crimes of violence would be protected if the convictions occurred more than 10 years ago,” she asserted.

An unnamed ICE source told Vaughan that most of the at-large illegal alien sex offenders that USMS and ICE are targeting “do not clearly meet the new standards, especially in California, where sex offenders routinely get to plead down to far lesser charges, especially if it helps them avoid deportation, and where certain sex crimes, such as sex with a minor, are not classified as felonies as they are in other states.”

“Another ICE officer told me that they had more than two dozen deportable sex offender targets at large in his area who now will be free to re-offend,” Vaughan wrote.

'Cancel Culture’ hits fever pitch: Journalists, critics, actors, TV hosts, musicians in crosshairs

"Blood in the water" leads to aggressive mobs, somber apologies, says an academic expert.

"Cancel culture" has long referred to the fury often faced by conservatives who become the victims of social media mobs, dismissal petitions and 48-hour news cycles. Often the precipitating incident is one in which the target expresses a conservative opinion — or at the very least one that offends mainstream progressive sensibilities — and the end goal is usually something like total marginalization: reputational harm, a social media ban, the loss of a job, public ostracization.

Yet the phenomenon is spreading beyond conservatives and increasingly sweeping up individuals who in earlier years would have seemed unlikely targets for the cancel mob: an apolitical musician here, a science journalist there, a popular dating show television host, even a gay art critic. As its target range expands, cancel culture produces an ever-more pervasive sense of what dozens of academics and writers last year called the "stifling atmosphere" of "public shaming and ostracism."

Most notably this past week, the Disney+ actress Gina Carano was fired from that company— including the smash-hit Star Wars feature "The Mandalorian" — over a series of controversial social media posts.

Carano has been outspokenly conservative in the past, and her social media behavior has ruffled feathers before. In one case she put the mock designations "beep/bop/boop" in her Twitter profile, a sarcastic send-up of the fashionable practice of displaying one's "preferred pronouns" such as "he/him/his." Elsewhere, she has been critical of COVID-19 mask mandates. Such criticism often riles commentators who claim masks are critical for saving lives amid the pandemic.

The recent Instagram post that appeared to trigger her firing was one in which Carano, via a shared meme, compared the current political climate in the U.S. to that of Nazi Germany. "[M]ost people today don't realize," the meme read in part, "that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews."

Following her firing by Disney+, Carano appeared to quickly land on her feet, on Friday announcing a movie partnership with Ben Shapiro's Daily Wire media company. Yet Carano is only the most recent — and arguably the most conservative — of public figures to be subject to attempted marginalization due to political outrage.

At the New York Times last week, veteran Times science reporter Donald McNeil announced his departure from the paper. McNeil had been at the center of controversy for several weeks over reports that, in 2019, he had used a racial slur while on a Times-sponsored trip to Peru with high school students.

None of McNeil's anonymous accusers alleged that he had directed the slur at anyone. McNeil himself eventually confirmed that he had said it as a reference, in the context of a conversation with some students one day.

Leadership at the Times was aware of the controversy and had initially determined that McNeil's behavior was not a fireable offense, yet pressure from dozens of Times staffers led editors Dean Baquet and Joe Kahn to force McNeil out.

Virginia College Forfeits Basketball Game After Suspending Players For Kneeling During Anthem

Bluefield College, a small Baptist liberal arts school nestled in the Appalachian mountains in Bluefield, Virginia doesn’t seem to be a likely place to make national news. But when players on the men’s basketball team took a knee during the playing of the national anthem — after being warned several times it was against school policy — the school president promptly suspended the players and forfeited a game.

The players had knelt several times before games in January and February, at both home and away contests. After being warned about the practice, the players decided to stay in the locker room during the playing of the national anthem before an away game.

But before the game on February 9, the players decided to kneel for the anthem. College President David Olive told the coach, “there would be consequences for the actions of the players for violating the College policy.” Those consequences involved suspending the entire team and forfeiting a game.

In a statement, Olive said his decision to suspend the entire team was based “on my own awareness of how kneeling is perceived by some in our country, and I did not think a number of our alumni, friends, and donors of the College would view the act of kneeling during the anthem in a positive way.”

The Hill:

Olive said he became aware on Feb. 1 that players had knelt during a Jan. 30 home game against Bryan College, as well as during away games on Jan. 23 and 26. He then told Head Coach Richard Morgan that kneeling during the national anthem “would not be allowed going forward.”

Olive said he later learned that players continued to kneel at a Feb. 2 game, and the team was kept in the locker room during the national anthem at an away game on Feb. 4.

It’s not like Olive didn’t give them fair warning. If the players’ object was to test Olive and see how far he’d go, they were certainly given a rude surprise.

The players are not revolutionaries and seem a little taken aback by all the fuss. They just want to play ball.

“It’s bigger than us, and we don’t want to have the season taken away from us,” forward Stanley Christian told ESPN.”We feel like we’re in a great position to bring this school a title. So we’ll stay in the locker room during the national anthem. They don’t want any more backlash, and we would definitely take a knee during the anthem.”

The players claim that a pro-Trump rally held near the campus shows that some protests are OK with the school. But the school pointed out that the Trump rally was held on city streets, not college grounds.

That didn’t satisfy the players: “So it’s OK for everyone to have a Trump rally with Confederate flags, but it’s not OK for us to kneel for our people who’ve fallen,” Christian said. “He didn’t have an answer for that.”

This is the mind of a child in the body of a college athlete. The Trump rally was not on the college grounds. The school had no connection with it. Olive tried to explain that to all the children on campus.

“We are a private entity, not a governmental entity,” Olive said in his statement. “We have policies and guidelines throughout the student handbook and the academic catalog that limit certain rights you otherwise might have elsewhere, such as in your home or in a public venue. The most important to me as it pertains to this matter, however, is what I shared earlier. When someone puts on a uniform or is performing a function on behalf of Bluefield College, that person is now representing Bluefield College. Heightened expectations are now placed on that individual as to what s/he can and cannot do or say as a representative of the College.”

It’s a shame other college presidents and pro sports team owners didn’t have the courage of David Olive of Bluefield College.

Multiple reports from last month indicated that GOP senators approved of Donald Trump's impeachment trial as a way to effectively blackmail the president into not pardoning Julian Assange.

As Tucker Carlson reported, Mitch McConnell "sent word over to the White House: 'if you pardon Julian Assange, we are much more likely to convict you in an impeachment trial.'"

Trump is also not expected to pardon Edward Snowden or Julian Assange, whose roles in revealing US secrets infuriated official Washington.

While he had once entertained the idea, Trump decided against it because he did not want to anger Senate Republicans who will soon determine whether he's convicted during his Senate trial. Multiple GOP lawmakers had sent messages through aides that they felt strongly about not granting clemency to Assange or Snowden.

As he departs office, Trump has expressed real concern that Republicans could turn on him. A conviction in the Senate impeachment trial would limit his future political activities and strip him of some of the government perks of being an ex-president.

Trump is less worried about being barred from running from office again, and more concerned with the optics of being convicted by the Senate, people familiar with the matter said.

Though Republicans demanded Trump not pardon Assange or Snowden who exposed our corrupt ruling class they had no issue with Trump pardoning the Israeli handler of traitor Jonathan Pollard, Israeli colonel Aviem Sella, who fled the US and escaped justice after Pollard was arrested.

Get ready, EVERY current gun owner will be a criminal

The Registry

First up in the act is the registry. The attorney general would establish a firearm registration system through the ATF that would collect information like the make, model, and serial number of every firearm in the nation, the name of the owner, the date the firearm was acquired, and where it will be stored. If a weapon is loaned to someone else, that must be reported as well. This would be an immediate action required for all new purchases, and anyone already owning a firearm would have three months to register everything they have.

The License

So, what would it take to get a license to own a firearm or ammunition? Applicants must be at least 21, pass a background check through the National Instant Criminal Background Check, pass a psychological evaluation, complete at least 24 hours of government-certified training in the use, safety, and safe storage of firearms, and pay for a special firearm insurance – which costs $800 per year.

A separate license must be obtained in addition to the basic license to own any “military-style” weapon. This ubiquitous term, of course, doesn’t mean weapons used by the actual military – there are already laws in place regulating most of those. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee’s list of qualified brand and model names is long, but it basically comes down to any A.R. or A.K. style rifle or pistol and more than a few semi-automatic shotguns.

The No-Nos

Banned outright are any “large capacity ammunition feeding devices,” which means anything capable of feeding more than ten rounds into the weapon except for tube-fed .22 rimfire rifles. Also prohibited would be any ammunition that is .50 caliber or greater. Without including any further definitions or exceptions, that’s a ban on any bullet half an inch in diameter or larger – including the 12-gauge slug.

The Penalties

Anyone caught with a gun or ammo but no license would face a fine between $75,000 and $150,000 and a prison sentence that could be as long as 25 years – but can’t be less than 15. Transferring anything requiring a license to someone who doesn’t have one comes with a penalty of between $50,000 and $75,000 fine and between ten and 15 years in prison. Loaning a firearm without telling the U.S. attorney general would come with a fine between $30,000 and $50,000 and prison term between five and ten years.

Letting anyone shoot a gun who isn’t at least 18 years old would incur a $75,000-$100,000 fine and 15-25 years in prison, unless a suicide, accident, murder, or general gun crime was then committed by the minor. The it would be $100,000 to $150,000 and 25-40 years.

The banned big bad bullets would buy you between ten and 20 years and a $50,000-$100,000 fine. Large capacity magazines come with 1-5 years and a $10,000-$25,000 fine. Finally, failing to maintain the $800 a year government-issued insurance would bring a fine no less than $50,000 and no more than $100,000 and a 10–20-year prison sentence.

For most gun owners this will be a bridge too far. Many (including this anon) will refuse to comply with any of these provisions. If they want war, this will certainly bring it.

National Guard could be stationed in DC until at least the fall: report

What is the point of this?

Department of Defense officials are considering keeping National Guard troops in Washington, D.C. through the fall, according to internal communication obtained by WTTG-TV.

There are currently approximately 6,000 National Guard troops patrolling Washington, D.C., following the Capitol riot on Jan 6. At one point, there were an estimated 26,000 National Guard members in D.C. to provide security for President Joe Biden's inauguration on Jan. 20.

An internal communication between the Department of Defense and the National Guard reportedly discusses keeping troops in the nation's capital until the fall.

Robert G. Salesses, who is the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense and Global Security, allegedly discussed an extension of the National Guard in D.C.

"If it's not possible to sustain at the current level with [National Guard] personnel, we need to establish the number of [National Guard] personnel (DCNG and out-of-state) we can sustain for an extended period – at least through Fall 2021 – and understand additional options for providing [Department of Defense] support, to include use of reserve personnel, as well as active component," Salesses reportedly wrote to the Capitol Police and National Security Council in an email.

Currently, there are plans to keep the National Guard in Washington, D.C., until mid-March. On Monday, Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said the cost of having the National Guard secure Washington, D.C. from Jan. 6 until March 15 will cost taxpayers $483 million — $284 million for personnel and $199 million for operations, according to Forbes.

Rep. Michael Waltz (R-Fla.) questioned why there are still National Guard troops in Washington.

"We still have National Guardsmen out there, away from their families, away from their jobs, supplementing the police," Waltz told Fox News host Martha MacCallum. "And yet we can't get a briefing on what is this dire threat that requires so many people. We still don't have answers."

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) also questioned why there were still troops in D.C.

"I sit on the Intelligence Committee, but I'm aware of no specific, credible threat reporting — as distinguished from aspirational, uncoordinated bluster on the internet — that justifies this continued troop presence," Cotton wrote in a Fox News op-ed. "Thus, I believe the rest of these soldiers should also go home to their families and civilian jobs."

The Pfizer coronavirus vaccine has produced a 94 percent drop in symptomatic coronavirus cases, a study published Sunday by the Clalit health maintenance organization's research institute says.

The study analyzed 1.2 million Clalit members, including 600,000 who had received the Pfizer vaccine and 600,000 who had not. The inoculated group produced 94 percent fewer symptomatic COVID-19 cases, and 92 percent fewer cases of serious illness. (Ido Efrati)

The State Bar of Georgia is working to take disciplinary action against pro-Trump lawyer and conspiracy theorist Lin Wood, he announced on social media Saturday, bemoaning the action and imploring his followers to investigate members of the Bar.

"The State Disciplinary Board of the State Bar of Georgia has received information concerning the above-named attorney that suggests that said attorney may have violated one or more of the Georgia Rules of Professional Conduct," the grievance, dated February 5 and uploaded by Wood to Dropbox reads.

The State Bar of Georgia did not immediately return Insider's request for comment Sunday.

Wood, who previously tweeted calling for the arrest and execution of former Vice President Mike Pence ahead of the riot at the US Capitol, shared news of the complaint on his Telegram account Saturday. Wood was been permanently banned from using Twitter after he violated a temporary suspension enacted by the company for inciting violence, as BuzzFeed News reported.

Wood was one of several lawyers working on behalf of former President Donald Trump's effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The February 5 complaint noted his espousal of conspiracy theories and his "Frivolous Filings."

Wood's sharing of the complaint, which was marked as confidential, was first reported on Twitter by journalist Steven Fowler. Wood uploaded a link to the more than 1,600-page complaint.

In a subsequent post, Wood told his Telegram followers he had the right to challenge the "competency, qualifications, or objectivity of any member of the State Disciplinary Board" within 10 days.

"I could use the help of an Army of Patriots due to the time limitation," Wood said, sharing a list of the members he said were provided to him by the Georgia Bar.

"The GA State Bar has thrown the kitchen sink at me," he said.

Wood asked his followers to investigate the members, including directing them to comb through their social media accounts and examine their political affiliations. Wood also asked his followers to investigate who the members have represented as lawyers, probing his followers to see if any members had connections to Dominion Voting Systems, the company Trump allies have targeted with baseless conspiracy theories.

Wood on Friday had said on Telegram he was representing former Trump lawyer Sidney Powell in Dominion's $US1.3 billion defamation lawsuit against her, as Forbes reported.

In January, Wood said he would refuse to take a mental health test as requested by the Georgia State Bar to determine his mental competency to continue to serve as an attorney.

The White House on Friday said that President Biden is aiming to nix the prison located at America's Naval Station Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki noted that it is the administration's "intention" to shut down the facility, known as GITMO, according to the Associated Press. The outlet noted that Biden during his candidacy said that he backed shutting down the detention facility.

"We are undertaking an NSC process to assess the current state of play that the Biden administration has inherited from the previous administration, in line with our broader goal of closing Guantanamo," National Security Council spokesperson Emily Horne told NPR. "There will be a robust interagency process to move forward on this, but we need to have the right people seated to do this important work."

The detention center was opened in January 2002, to hold people suspected of connections to al-Qaida and the Taliban, according to the AP, which said the facility "became a source of international criticism over the mistreatment of prisoners and the prolonged imprisonment of people without charge." There are currently 40 people held there.

Hidden political donations hit record high

Federal political parties received $50 million in unexplained cash last year in another sign of the trend towards secretive donations.

The “hidden money” – revealed in new analysis that calls for tougher disclosure laws so voters can know the source of the funds – is more than three times the size of the donations claimed during the last financial year. It takes the total value of unexplained finance to about $1.2 billion over two decades.

The analysis, from the not-for-profit Centre for Public Integrity, is based on documents released by the Australian Electoral Commission on February 1 under a regime that allows parties to keep many donations secret.

Former judges and corruption investigators at the Centre for Public Integrity said the results showed the need for urgent changes including tighter benchmarks so more donors would have to reveal their payments.

They also called for stronger sanctions to make sure donations are revealed, noting that voters can be fined for failing to vote but there is no similar penalty for minor non-compliance with the disclosure regime.

“This secrecy needs to stop,” said Anthony Whealy, QC, the chair of the Centre for Public Integrity, a former NSW Supreme Court judge and a former assistant commissioner of the state’s Independent Commission Against Corruption.

“The last election set records for money raised and money hidden. Reform is needed now so that the funding of the coming election is transparent.”

The new analysis comes after an earlier report from the same group found about $1.1 billion in hidden payments to political parties over the past two decades.

Total income for political parties was $168.1 million in the last financial year, the new report says, with $14.6 million in disclosed donations, $58.2 million in public funding, $38.9 million in other receipts and $6.8 million in loans and party transfers. This left $49.6 million unexplained.

The centre concludes that both major parties leave a big share of their finance hidden, with the source of 39.2 per cent of Coalition funding and 27.7 per cent of Labor funding unexplained over two decades.

The hidden money has also surged during election years, reaching a peak in the year to June 2019.

“The source of over $114 million in party income was hidden from public view, meaning that voters were unaware of who funded the 2019 federal election campaign,” the report says.

The Centre for Public Integrity board includes former federal court judge and Queensland corruption commissioner Tony Fitzgerald; former Victorian Court of Appeal judge Stephen Charles; NSW barrister and corruption inquiry counsel Geoffrey Watson; and University of Melbourne professor Joo-Cheong Tham.

While Labor and the Greens have backed stricter laws, the government has defended a regime that only requires donors and parties to disclose payments over $14,300. Party officials note that this should include any aggregation, such as multiple payments to various party branches.

Significant funding has come from party investments, such as the Cormack Foundation, which generally supports the Liberals, and the Labor Party’s John Curtin House.

Labor wants the disclosure threshold cut to $1000 and donations reported to the AEC within seven days, while the Greens want the same threshold and a ban on donations from mining, banking and other industries.

“Most states have a disclosure threshold of $1000,” Mr Whealy said. “The Commonwealth’s disclosure threshold of $14,300 is out of line.”

The Centre for Public Integrity said the Australian Electoral Commission needed the power to apply administrative penalties for “minor non-compliance” so donors and parties made sure they revealed payments accurately and on time.

The centre wants law reform to broaden the definition of “donation” to include income from party fundraisers, corporate sponsorship of business forums, as well as membership fees over $2000 per year.

It also wants real-time disclosure of donations rather than the current system, which discloses figures in February for payments made in the previous financial year.

Joe Biden uses the anniversary of a school shooting to demand strict gun control across the country.

Using the anniversary of the horrific Parkland school shooting – which was committed by someone who the FBI repeatedly ignored – as pretext, Joe Biden demanded Congress pass the type stringent gun legislation far left activists have demanded for years.

No military in existence uses AR-15 rifles or other semi-automatic counterparts, instead using fully automatic weapons like the M-16 and M-4 carbine in the United States, the Type 95 Automatic Rifle in China, and the AK-74 assault rifle in Russia. Automatic weapons have not been available for purchase in the United States since the government made them illegal in 1986.

While many gun control proponents insist that “assault weapons” must include the AR-15, many incorrectly assume AR stands for “assault rifle,” instead of Armalite, the original company to manufacture it.

This comes as Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) is championing a Red Flag Law in the United States Senate that would allow Biden’s Attorney General, Merrick Garland – who has fantasized about stripping Americans of their Second Amendment rights since the year 2000 – to strip any American who has been the subject of a domestic terrorism investigation of their guns, even if no charges are levied or arrests made.

A future influenza pandemic may unfold in a similar manner, say the NIAID authors, whose paper in the Oct. 1 issue of The Journal of Infectious Diseases is now available online. Therefore, the authors conclude, comprehensive pandemic preparations should include not only efforts to produce new or improved influenza vaccines and antiviral drugs but also provisions to stockpile antibiotics and bacterial vaccines as well.

The work presents complementary lines of evidence from the fields of pathology and history of medicine to support this conclusion. "The weight of evidence we examined from both historical and modern analyses of the 1918 influenza pandemic favors a scenario in which viral damage followed by bacterial pneumonia led to the vast majority of deaths," says co-author NIAID Director Anthony S. Fauci, M.D. "In essence, the virus landed the first blow while bacteria delivered the knockout punch."

Witch joins QAnon to find children on 'SNL': 'This underground cabal, what's the deal?'

“Saturday Night Live” cast member Kate McKinnon transformed into a witch who became a follower of the QAnon conspiracy theory to try to find children in one of the show’s latest sketches taking aim at the far-right movement.

McKinnon appears as the witch, who initially pretends to be an Ohio woman named Stephanie Green, during the show’s “Weekend Update” segment.

“That’s right. A normal girl. I work in an office for business, coffee, pencils — the whole nine,” she says.

“And you’re a member of QAnon?” co-host Colin Jost asks her.

“Oh, big time. Yes! Q all the way,” she responds with a pointed finger.

Jost presses the witch about QAnon and some the baseless conspiracy theories that have emerged out of the movement.

“QAnon says that there is an underground ring of very bad people. They gather to undermine [former President] Trump and to steal elections and to eat children," she responds. "I hear that and I’m like, ‘Woah, where?’”

According to The New York Times, QAnon falsely claims that a group of Satan-worshipping pedophiles, comprised partly of top Democrats and celebrities, controls the world.

“Yeah, well it’s a very disturbing theory. So, what do you do with QAnon?” Jost asks the witch.

“Yes, we try to get to the bottom of things. This underground cabal, what’s the deal? Who’s part of it? How do you get an invite? Is it reservations or is it open table? Are there enough children to go around? Do you eat them on site or do you take them home? Are there dipping sauces?” she responds.

“Yeah, It sounds like you’re pretty focused on the eating children part of QAnon,” Jost continues.

“Yes. Oh, it’s terrible. I gotta get down there to stop ‘em. I will grab those children right out of their mouths … and take them to my house. My house is made of candy. It’s in the woods, and then I’ll eat them. I mean, I’ll kill them. How am I doing?” she asks to laughs from the audience.

“Not great. No. Yeah, I’m getting the feeling that you don’t want to help children,” Jost replies.

“No, no, no, no, no. I love children, all kinds. Girls, boys, barbecue, sour cream and onion, cool ranch,” she goes on to add.

“Yeah, I think you want to eat ‘em,” Jost tells McKinnon’s witch, “Like maybe that you’re only in QAnon to find out where that’s happening.”

“Why? Do you know?” she then asks Jost. “You’re a Hollywood elite, yes? Is there an email chain?”

Jost and the witch eventually start to express doubt about her chances of finding children through the movement.

“I’m starting to get worried it isn’t real," she says with apparent concern, "I’m starting to feel that maybe the whole thing is cuckoo bananas.”

The witch also later comes out with her true identity.

"My name is Grismelda. I live in a candy house in New Hampshire. I roast and eat whole children, but, Colin, these people — these people are weird," she adds with both her hands raised.

President Joe Biden has released a statement allowing a closer look at what his “commonsense” policy on gun laws will be, demanding, among other things, that Congress pass universal background checks and ban “assault weapons.”

“Today, I am calling on Congress to enact commonsense gun law reforms,” Biden said in his Sunday statement. The timing matched the third anniversary of the Parkland shooting, which saw a gunman open fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, killing 17 and wounding another 17.

Biden has long promised to put his weight behind stricter gun laws if he were elected president and his ideas run down the list of common demands gun-control advocates often push for. Demand For Used Private Jets Takes Off During Pandemic

In a troubling sign that economic inequality continues to widen in the pandemic recession and recovery, the luxury-jet market is taking off as millions of working-poor Americans face food and housing insecurities.

The Federal Reserve's wealth effect of boosting stocks and housing prices, along with shifting travel trends due to the pandemic, has not just produced a "K-shaped" recovery for the rich but also allowed them to splurge on used private jets.

Credit Suisse Group AG, BNP Paribas SA, and other bankers told Bloomberg that used private jet demand in the second half of 2020 increased. Momentum in the market is expected to roll into 2021 as vaccination efforts drive corporate demand.

Werner Slavik, chief of aviation for the equipment-finance unit of Societe Generale SA, told attendees at a virtual Corporate Jet Investor conference last week that "the smaller jet market has strong demand." He was surprised that 2020 was a "very good year."

Bankers said international travel restrictions had reduced the need for larger corporate jets. They reported an increase in first-time purchasers at the lower end of the market.

Virtual meetings and remote working for white-collar workers have reduced the need for business travel and private jet demand, though leisure travel among the wealthy using private jets surged. U.S. business-jet flight operations plunged by nearly a quarter last year.

More on the shifting travel trends is Airbnb Chief Executive Officer Brian Chesky who told Reuters last month domestic travel trends will never be going back to the way it was before the virus pandemic. He said business travel is shifting to leisure travel because technologies like Zoom can make teleconferencing possible.

A JETNET iQ Market Report showed used private jet sales rose slightly in 2020 from the previous year to 2,598 transactions.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis bashed President Joe Biden for his coronavirus hypocrisy regarding a potential domestic travel ban while simultaneously welcoming untested immigrants at the U.S. southern border.

Last week, there was a Miami Herald report circulating that claimed the Biden administration was considering enacting domestic travel restrictions to states with highly-contagious new variants of COVID-19. Reportedly at the top of the list was Florida because the state had the most cases.

DeSantis ripped Biden's double standard on COVID-19, said it "stinks to high heaven" during an appearance on Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo."

DeSantis compared Biden's potential domestic travel ban with the president's lax immigration policies, "It is a huge contradiction and you can't square wanting opening borders for illegal aliens, but then also restricting U.S. citizens from basically traveling around the country as they see fit and I think the American people see the hypocrisy in that."

"Of course they're not being screened for COVID at the southern border because this is all political," DeSantis said on Sunday. "So he's [Biden's] opening the border [and] he's letting illegals pour in. They're not doing any COVID tests. They're [migrants are] just coming into the communities."

"Yet, he wants to potentially make you take a test if you just get on an airplane and fly from one American city to the next," the Republican governor stated. "Or he wants to prevent travel to the state of Florida."

The New York Times reported earlier this month that migrants entering the United States through Texas are not tested for coronavirus, and do not face any quarantine requirements as long as they "arrive with no coronavirus symptoms." "At least 1,000 migrants have been allowed to cross into Texas in recent days," the Feb. 6 article read.

In addition, there have been "more than 1,000 people who had been detained after crossing have been released into the country in recent days."

"Many more people are gathering on the Mexican side, aggravating conditions there and testing America's ability and willingness to admit migrants during a pandemic," the article added.

A young Liberal Party staffer alleges she was raped at Parliament House and claims she felt forced to choose between reporting it to the police or keeping her job.

A Liberal Party staffer has alleged she was raped at Parliament House in Defence Minister Linda Reynolds’ ministerial office by a colleague, and claims she felt forced to choose between reporting it to the police or keeping her job.

In explosive allegations detailing the Morrison Government’s handling of the incident, media adviser Brittany Higgins has told news.com.au that she spent the last two years “internalising the trauma”.

She has also revealed that she was brought to a formal employment meeting about the incident in the room where she was allegedly raped — a decision the Morrison Government has now accepted was an error by the then Defence Industry Minister Linda Reynolds.

Ms Higgins was just 24 at the time of the incident and only months into her “dream job” of working at parliament.

She said the horror night quickly emerged as a crisis to be managed by her successive chiefs of staff, cabinet ministers and even staff in the Prime Minister’s office.

The alleged sexual assault occurred on the evening of March 23, 2019, just weeks before Prime Minister Scott Morrison called the election on April 10, 2019.

After a night of drinking with colleagues, Ms Higgins alleges she was assaulted in her own office by another Liberal staffer who she says was regarded as a “rising star” in the party.

She remembers the man buying “lots of rounds of drinks” at the event before it was suggested he lived in the same direction and his taxi could drop her home on the way.

Instead, he took her to Parliament House.

“I didn’t have a pass. I was in a cocktail dress,” she said.

“At that point I was very intoxicated. I thought, ‘Well, I am well and truly done. I need to go.’ And so there were only four of us left. We were going the same way.”

Ms Higgins said she was so affected by alcohol and did not have her security pass that the Liberal staffer needed to sign her in with security officers.

From that moment, CCTV vision tracked the pair’s every move in Parliament House towards Senator Reynolds’ office.

After arriving at the office, Ms Higgins said she remembers sitting on a window ledge that overlooked the Prime Minister’s courtyard.

She began to feel unwell and lay down on the couch. It was then she woke up to the Liberal staffer having sex with her.

“All of sudden he was on top of me and I physically couldn’t get him off of me,’’ she said.

“I woke up mid-rape. I told him to stop. I was crying. He wasn’t even looking at me. It felt like I was sort of a body that was there. It didn’t feel like it was anything about me.”

Ms Higgins said it felt like there was pressure on her leg during the alleged assault, and has photographs of a bruise on her leg that she says was from that pressure.

Ken Barton has stepped down as CEO and managing director of Crown Resorts following last week's scathing report into the gambling giant.

In a statement, Crown said it was determined to take "significant steps" to improve governance, compliance and culture.

Helen Coonan will lead the company as executive chairman while the board searches for a new CEO.

An investigation commissioned by NSW's Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority (ILGA) last week concluded Crown was unsuitable to operate a licence for its new Sydney casino in its current form.

A report by Commissioner Patricia Bergin found there was likely no future in the company for Mr Barton.

Mr Barton said in a statement he was committed to assisting with a leadership transition.

"I am absolutely certain the business is now on the right path as it works to restore confidence in its operations," he said.

Mr Barton has spent more than a decade with Crown, initially as its chief financial officer before being appointed as CEO in January 2020 as the Bergin inquiry began.

During his time at Crown he was also the director of two VIP bank accounts at the centre of money laundering allegations.

Commissioner Bergin found Mr Barton was "no match for what is needed at the helm of a casino licensee".

"His problems will not be cured by the appointment of people expert in the field who report to him", she stated in her final report.

She found Mr Barton should have launched a full investigation into money laundering allegations by the time the inquiry began.

Mr Barton was also accused of misleading shareholders at an annual general meeting in 2019 when he said "general" information was being shared between Crown and James Packer's company Consolidated Press Holdings (CPH) when in reality that information was confidential.

"Mr Barton's conduct at the Annual General Meeting in October 2019 as the CFO of Crown was quite improper," the report stated.

"However his attempts in the witness box on 23 September 2020 to justify his conduct at the Annual General Meeting, were even more inappropriate for the CEO and director of Crown and director of the licensee.

"It demonstrated a serious lack of judgment and insight into the expectation of the highest standards of property, candour and co-operation of a director of a company that holds a casino licence."

Last week three Crown directors, Andrew Demetriou, Michael Johnston and Guy Jalland, also resigned, allowing the company to mount an "ambitious reform program", according to Ms Coonan.

Mr Packer's CPH cut its ties with Crown's board after terminating its consultancy contract with non-executive board member John Poynton.

Ms Coonan last week apologised for the company's "shortcomings" and said the criticism by the regulator was warranted.

TOKYO – As news of the military coup in Myanmar reached the halls of the Bank of Japan, staff raced to gather information about the ongoing developments.

"They have apparently kicked out the central bank governor as well." The shocking news was passed up the command chain at the head office in Tokyo's Nihonbashi district.

On Feb.1, Myanmar's military took control of the country's administrative, legislative and judicial branches, detaining de facto leader State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi and several other democratically elected officials.

It is unclear what happened to former central bank chief Kyaw Kyaw Maung, but deputy governor Bo Bo Nge has been detained, according to media reports. Than Nyein, who served as central banker under the previous junta before the first free election in decades in 2015, has been reappointed to the role.

The Bank of Japan, like most central banks around the world, is watching carefully, to see how the military leaders could affect bilateral and regional cooperation on monetary policy and financial stability.

The move brought back stark memories of the country's decades of military rule, when it was closed off from much of the world. The period of isolation began to change when the military embraced reforms at the beginning of the last decade, with foreign investors flooding into the largely untapped market rich with natural resources.

Japanese companies and financial institutions made significant inroads in Myanmar in the past decade, expecting the market to grow rapidly as it moved toward democracy.

Public and private Japanese players helped Myanmar build its financial and market infrastructure. The Japan International Cooperation Agency contributed to the core systems at the Central Bank of Myanmar, as a joint project with NTT Data and the Daiwa Institute of Research.

The BOJ shares deep connections to the Central Bank of Myanmar as well. It has trained staffers for the Myanmar bank at its head office in Tokyo, and assigned its alumni to advise the Myanmar bank.

What brought Myanmar deeper into the region's fold was the Chiang Mai Initiative. The currency swap agreement, designed so members assist each other with liquidity in times of crisis, originally launched with Japan, China, South Korea and five countries in Southeast Asia. The remaining members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, including Myanmar, have since joined the framework.

Myanmar formally joined the Chiang Mai Initiative in 2010, during BOJ Gov. Haruhiko Kuroda's tenure as president of the Asian Development Bank. The ADB on Feb. 2 issued a statement saying it was "deeply concerned about the current situation in Myanmar, which could constitute a serious setback to the country's transition and development prospects."

The U.S. has decided to impose sanctions on Myanmar military officials over the coup, while China, a major economic partner for Myanmar, has largely kept silent.

Turning back the clock on democracy could affect future public and private investments in Myanmar. There is also concern over how the coup can affect Myanmar's membership in the Chiang Mai Initiative.

"The initiative is an important link for Myanmar to the international community, but the country may have a harder time using it under protracted military rule," a source at the BOJ said. Some at the Japanese bank worry that developments in Myanmar could undermine international monetary cooperation.

Wrongheaded public policies implemented in attempts to stem the spread of COVID-19 have caused more harm than good in many cases here in the United States. But in the United Kingdom, outrage is growing about a particularly pernicious public health directive: ‘Do Not Resuscitate’ orders for categories of patients with COVID.

These DNR orders first shocked the public across the UK back in December. A quality care organization revealed that certain nursing home residents with COVID were tagged with DNR orders due to other health conditions.

Do-not-resuscitate orders were wrongly allocated to some care home residents during the Covid-19 pandemic, causing potentially avoidable deaths, the first phase of a review by England’s Care Quality Commission has found.

The regulator warned that some of the “inappropriate” do not attempt cardiopulmonary resuscitation (DNACPR) notices applied in the spring may still be in place and called on all care providers to check with the person concerned that they consent.

In many cases, according to the Care Quality Commission (CQC), family members were unaware of these orders being placed on their relatives in the nursing homes.

The CQC received 40 submissions from the public, mostly about DNACPR orders that had been put in place without consulting with the person or their family. These included reports of all the residents of one care home being given a DNACPR notice, and of the notices routinely being applied to anyone infected with Covid.

Some people reported that they did not even know a DNACPR order had been placed on their relative until they were quite unwell.

Additionally, these blanket orders resulted in “avoidable” deaths, according to the CQC. These orders were placed during the first wave of COVID and CQC stated that overwhelming confusion may have led to the situation.

But fast forward to this week and the news has gotten even more disturbing. According to Mencap, a disability advocacy group in the UK, new blanket DNR orders during the second wave of COVID targeted patients with learning disabilities.

Edel Harris, Mencap’s chief executive, said: “Throughout the pandemic many people with a learning disability have faced shocking discrimination and obstacles to accessing healthcare, with inappropriate Do Not Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (DNACPR) notices put on their files and cuts made to their social care support.

“It’s unacceptable that within a group of people hit so hard by the pandemic, and who even before Covid died on average over 20 years younger than the general population, many are left feeling scared and wondering why they have been left out.

This population was supposed to have been fast-tracked for COVID vaccines as well. That’s because people with learning disabilities are at greater risk of death from COVID. In fact, disabled patients aged 18 to 34 are 30 times more likely to die of COVID than others in that age group.

NHS figures released last week show that in the five weeks since the third lockdown began, Covid-19 accounted for 65% of deaths of people with learning disabilities. Figures from the Office for National Statistics show that the rate for the general population was 39%, although the two statistics are drawn from different measurements.

However, Mencap notes that vaccinations of the disabled population are moving at a glacial pace despite the overwhelming risk.

“It’s unacceptable that within a group of people hit so hard by the pandemic, and who even before Covid died on average over 20 years younger than the general population, many are left feeling scared and wondering why they have been left out.

“The JCVI and government must act now to help save the lives of some of society’s most vulnerable people by urgently prioritising all people with a learning disability for the vaccine.”

Hopefully, elected and appointed officials in the United Kingdom, the United States, and around the world will do some serious soul searching when the crisis has ebbed. Many very bad decisions were made early on in the pandemic, but they appear to be continuing today.

Syrian army says Israeli jets target Damascus countryside after Iran warns of repercussions

Israeli aircraft have pelted area outside Damascus with missiles, Syria’s state media reported. The reported air raid comes shortly after Tehran warned Tel Aviv against “crossing red lines” in Syria, vowing stark response.

Israeli jets rained down missiles on the area in the vicinity of Damascus from the occupied Golan Heights and Israel's northern Galilee region in the early hours of Monday, Syria’s SANA news agency reported. The Syrian military said that its air defences intercepted “most of the missiles.”

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) routinely strike Syria’s territory under the pretext of wiping out Iranian targets there to prevent Tehran from gaining a foothold in the region. Israeli rarely acknowledges its incursions into the Syrian territory, in line with its long-standing policy not to comment on bombing raids overseas.

The fresh barrage of missiles hit the outskirts of the Syrian capital shortly after Ali Asghar Khaji, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif’s senior aide for special political affairs, chided Israel for “aggressive and hostile” policies in Syria. In an interview to Sputnik published on Sunday, the official said that while Iranian forces operate in Syria at the request of the government to fight terrorists, “Israel supports them.”

He also warned Tel Aviv of “crossing the red lines” in Syria, noting that it shall brace itself for “the toughest response” in this case.

Ex-FBI attorney Kevin Clinesmith, who was recently sentenced to 12 months of probation, has been temporarily suspended from practicing law in Washington.

The D.C. Bar, the official organization responsible for licensing and disciplining attorneys in the area, indicated on its website that Clinesmith received a suspension “on an interim basis based upon his conviction of a serious crime in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.”

Clinesmith was sentenced on Jan. 29 to 12 months of probation after he pleaded guilty to falsifying an email that FBI agents relied on to obtain a secret court warrant to spy on a former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.

The misconduct occurred at a time when Clinesmith served as the primary FBI attorney assigned to the “Crossfire Hurricane” investigation. He was tasked to probe into whether Page was a source of the CIA before the FBI applied for another warrant against the Trump associate.

Nicki Minaj’s father was killed by a hit-and-run driver on Long Island, police said Sunday.

Robert Maraj, 64, was struck around 6 p.m. Friday as he was walking in Mineola, according to Nassau County Police. The driver fled before witnesses could get a clear look at who was behind the wheel, cops said.

The rap superstar’s dad was initially listed in critical condition at a local hospital but died from his injuries at some point over the weekend, police said.

Homicide detectives are investigating the crash and asking anyone who saw the collision at the intersection of Roslyn Road and Raff Avenue to come forward.

Minaj — who was born Onika Tanya Maraj and raised in Queens — reportedly had a rocky relationship with her father.
