Today I have to say a very hard goodbye to my friend Maria Rodriguez in the Virgin Islands. Maria and others were killed today in a helicopter crash in St. Thomas. She was a dear friend to me and to our island community. I have been flying with Maria for over 15 years and we shared a lot of laughs and a lot of life together. She was always the first person I saw when I landed and the last person I said goodbye to when I would leave island. I’m sure going to miss that. It’s fair to say I won’t ever be able to go to the Virgin Islands again without feeling the loss of her. She was such a huge part of my island life.

So goodbye sweet friend. I’m sure glad our paths crossed on this side. See you on the other.

Texplainer: Why Does Texas Have Its Own Power Grid?

Why does Texas have its own electric grid?

Texas' secessionist inclinations have at least one modern outlet: the electric grid. There are three grids in the Lower 48 states: the Eastern Interconnection, the Western Interconnection — and Texas.

The Texas grid is called ERCOT, and it is run by an agency of the same name — the Electric Reliability Council of Texas. ERCOT does not actually cover all of Texas. El Paso is on another grid, as is the upper Panhandle and a chunk of East Texas. This presumably has to do with the history of various utilities' service territories and the remoteness of the non-ERCOT locations (for example the Panhandle is closer to Kansas than to Dallas, notes Kenneth Starcher of the Alternative Energy Institute in Canyon), but Texplainer is still figuring out the particulars on this.

The separation of the Texas grid from the rest of the country has its origins in the evolution of electric utilities early last century. In the decades after Thomas Edison turned on the country's first power plant in Manhattan in 1882, small generating plants sprouted across Texas, bringing electric light to cities. Later, particularly during the first world war, utilities began to link themselves together. These ties, and the accompanying transmission network, grew further during the second world war, when several Texas utilities joined together to form the Texas Interconnected System, which allowed them to link to the big dams along Texas rivers and also send extra electricity to support the ramped-up factories aiding the war effort.

The Texas Interconnected System — which for a long time was actually operated by two discrete entities, one for northern Texas and one for southern Texas — had another priority: staying out of the reach of federal regulators. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Federal Power Act, which charged the Federal Power Commission with overseeing interstate electricity sales. By not crossing state lines, Texas utilities avoided being subjected to federal rules. "Freedom from federal regulation was a cherished goal — more so because Texas had no regulation until the 1970s," writes Richard D. Cudahy in a 1995 article, "The Second Battle of the Alamo: The Midnight Connection." (Self-reliance was also made easier in Texas, especially in the early days, because the state has substantial coal, natural gas and oil resources of its own to fuel power plants.)

ERCOT was formed in 1970, in the wake of a major blackout in the Northeast in November 1965, and it was tasked with managing grid reliability in accordance with national standards. The agency assumed additional responsibilities following electric deregulation in Texas a decade ago. The ERCOT grid remains beyond the jurisdiction of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, which succeeded the Federal Power Commission and regulates interstate electric transmission.

Historically, the Texas grid's independence has been violated a few times. Once was during World War II, when special provisions were made to link Texas to other grids, according to Cudahy. Another episode occurred in 1976 after a Texas utility, for reasons relating to its own regulatory needs, deliberately flipped a switch and sent power to Oklahoma for a few hours. This event, known as the "Midnight Connection," set off a major legal battle that could have brought Texas under the jurisdiction of federal regulators, but it was ultimately resolved in favor of continued Texan independence.

Even today, ERCOT is also not completely isolated from other grids — as was evident when the state imported some power from Mexico during the rolling blackouts of 2011. ERCOT has three ties to Mexico and — as an outcome of the "Midnight Connection" battle — it also has two ties to the eastern U.S. grid, though they do not trigger federal regulation for ERCOT. All can move power commercially as well as be used in emergencies, according to ERCOT spokeswoman Dottie Roark. A possible sixth interconnection project, in Rusk County, is being studied, and another ambitious proposal, called Tres Amigas, would link the three big U.S. grids together in New Mexico, though Texas' top utility regulator has shown little enthusiasm for participating.

Bottom line: Texas has its own grid to avoid dealing with the feds.

U2’s Bono attended the Glamour Women Of The Year Awards Monday night to accept an award for “Man of the Year.” But the rocker also had another reason to celebrate. It was 40 years ago that night that Bono shared his first date with his now-wife, Ali Hewson.

But it wasn’t love at first sight… at least not for her. “She’s working up to that,” he told ET.

The couple first met as teenagers in their nativeDublin, Ireland before he was a world-famous musician. And so their first date ended with a less-than-glamorous sendoff ― he walked her to the bus stop, the singer revealed. They married in their early 20s and recently celebrated 34 years of marriage.

As for what has kept them close as ever, Bono had a surprising answer.

“We feel the 'red carpet' has kept us close,” he said. “If things are going around, we say, ‘Let’s do the red carpet, certainly.’”

Hewson is known for being fiercely private when it comes to the couple’s home life and four children, so we think he might have been joking.

But in all seriousness, Bono is clearly still smitten with his longtime love.

“It’s been a great ride, a magic carpet ride,” he said of his decades-long relationship.

Speaking to the Irish Independent in 2011, Bono revealed his total devotion to Hewson.

“I feel our relationship has changed a lot,” he said.“I feel I hold on a lot tighter to her than she does to me.”

Clinton, who works with the Clinton Foundation and the Clinton Global Initiative, chatted with the label's two visionaries on Sunday night in the front row of Edun's autumn runway show in New York.

"I just have such tremendous respect for everything that Ali and Edun have created in their continued commitment to fabricating in Africa, which I think is so important," Clinton said.

Does she think the fashion manufacturing base in Africa is strong enough for other companies to follow suit?

"Absolutely. I mean seven of 10 of the fastest-growing countries in most of the last 10 years have been in sub-Saharan Africa, so I think there is already vital fashion happening in Africa," said the daughter of former President Bill Clinton and former US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

"It just hasn't penetrated to this side of the Atlantic. I think that with people like Ali and companies like Edun investing in Africa, it will not only help bring African-made products to American consumers but will also, ultimately, help African designers come to the United States."

Clinton called the collection, in earthy colours of charcoal, camel and rust, "absolutely gorgeous" and thinks it's in good hands with Edun's new designer, Danielle Sherman, who joined last year.

After a rocky start, Edun for the first time made 85 per cent of its spring-summer clothes in African factories, primarily in Kenya and Madagascar, Sherman said. The company, intended to promote trade and create jobs in Africa, was founded in 2005.

The company's mission is not charity, she cautioned. "It's not handouts. Its core mission is to give people work. That's really the ethos."

Key to success, the company has learnt, is to have staff on the ground in Africa working closely on the manufacturing end.

Aesthetically, Edun has honed its look. This time around, Sherman incorporated graphic elements through texture blocking and weaving. Other fabric manipulations produced hair-like and Astroturf textures, and she used faux fur.

"We really are playing with materials to build that youthful playfulness," Sherman said. "There's a kind of art student feeling to it."

Part of that playfulness came in a woven herringbone in patent leather on a chunky-heeled boot, the result of a collaboration with Manolo Blahnik.

"We were really lucky to work with them," Sherman said.

Algerians have taken to the streets in their thousands in the northern town of Kherrata, demanding political change on the second anniversary of the mass ‘Hirak’ protests that started in the town and spread across the country.

Tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered in Kherrata on Tuesday, chanting “A civilian state, not a military state” and “The gang must go,” as they sought to revive the mass protests that swept across Algeria in 2019, eventually causing the resignation of long-standing President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

The Hirak movement started after Bouteflika announced he would be running for a fifth term in office, but the demonstrations continued even after his resignation in early April 2019, as protesters demanded all top-level insiders step down.

“We came to revive the Hirak that was stopped for health reasons. They didn’t stop us. We stopped because we care for our people. Today, coronavirus is over and we will get the Hirak back,” a protester told Reuters.

Videos show crowds gathering in the town’s main square, where the protests initially kicked off in 2019. In some footage shared to social media, protesters can be heard chanting“The secret service controls Algeria” and “Long live free Algeria.”

Critical race theory watchdog Christopher F. Rufo reported on Monday that the principal of a New York school sent a list of white identities to white parents so that they could try to convert themselves from white supremacists to white abolitionists.

The East Side Community School teacher even included a white supremacism spectrum for parents to self-identify.

According to East Side Community School the goal is to become a white abolitionist. But these steps are subjective, not clearly defined and ALWAYS up for evaluation by your peers.

Apparently this list of the eight “white identities” has been passed around on Facebook for a couple of years.

Its author is Professor Barnor Hesse.

Hesse is an Associate Professor of African American Studies, Political Science, and Sociology

His research interests include post-structuralism and political theory, black political thought, modernity and coloniality, blackness and affect, race and governmentality, conceptual methodologies, postcolonial studies. Citigroup Inc. unexpectedly lost a legal battle to recover half a billion dollars it sent Revlon Inc. lenders, after the embarrassing blunder forced it to answer to regulators and tighten its internal controls.

U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman on Tuesday ruled that 10 asset managers for the lenders which include Brigade Capital Management, HPS Investment Partners and Symphony Asset Management don’t have to return $504 million that Citibank said it mistakenly transferred in August while trying to make an interest payment. He said they shouldn’t have been expected to know that the transfer, which totaled more than $900 million before some lenders returned their share, was an error.

“To believe that Citibank, one of the most sophisticated financial institutions in the world, had made a mistake that had never happened before, to the tune of nearly $1 billion would have been borderline irrational,” wrote Furman, who presides in Manhattan.

Israel violates international law anew, again bombing Syria…to further indifference of Western media

Israeli missiles reportedly targeted Syria again on Monday. Usually carried out under the pretense of “targeting Iranian/Iranian-backed militias,” Israel's strikes violate Syria's sovereignty and breach international law.

Israel's military chief of staff boasted earlier about hitting over 500 targets in just 2020 alone. Bearing in mind that Syria's air defenses do intercept Israeli missiles, it is clear that Israel attacked Syria exponentially more than 500 times last year, and an untold number of times more in the many years that Israel has been bombing Syria.

This latest assault on Syria comes after an Iranian official clarified any Iranian forces in Syria are there at the invitation of the Syrian government to fight terrorists in Syria. This of course applies to all of Syria's allies, but not to the illegal US and Turkish occupation forces.

Yet, one of the many ironies regarding reporting on Syria is that while Syria and her allies fighting terrorism there are routinely lambasted by Israeli and Western officials, both Israel and Western nations have long been supporting terrorists in Syria, claiming they are “opposition forces” although they are either part of Al-Qaeda in Syria, closely aligned to them, or members of equally brutal factions, including even Islamic State ( IS, formerly ISIS).

If Israel's routine bombings of Syria are reported in Western media at all, it is with the usual downplaying of (and normalizing of) Israel's violations of international law.

A SANA (Syrian Arab News Agency) report on the February 15 bombings read as most reports prior over the years, noting the Israeli aggression and that Syria's “air defenses intercepted the missiles and downed most of them.”

Reuters' account, referring to the SANA report, put Israeli aggression in quotation marks, as though the bombings don't amount to an aggression. Perhaps Reuters views them as late Valentine's greetings…Google “Iranian” or “Russian aggression” and see how often quotation marks are used.

Did Reuters or similar media bother to speak with civilians terrorized by these and the many prior Israeli assaults on Syria? Would they ever mention the psychological component of bombing at night, which is inevitably when Israel usually bombs?

Unlikely. Their narrative is to establish that “Iranian militias” are overtaking Syria and pose a threat to Israel that justifies Israel's incessant bombings of Syria.

Citi Loses Court Battle Over $500MM "Fat Finger" Trade

Some Citigroup execs are about to have some serious explaining to do to their shareholders (though fortunately for the bank, outgoing CEO Michael Corbat is still at the rudder to take the PR hit).

After more than a year of fighting, Bloomberg reports that Citigroup has officially lost the court battle to recover some $500MM that was accidentally transferred to investors in a Revlon debt deal.

Citigroup shares retreated (but remained in the green) on the news, which was first reported by Bloomberg.

Police in Idaho Falls say the mother of a 13-year-old girl "encouraged and condoned" a relationship between her daughter and a 29-year-old man who is now under arrest for sexually abusing the child.

Bill Ernest Davenport was arrested and charged with felony lewd conduct with a minor after detectives discovered photos and a video on his phone showing him molesting the teenage girl, East Idaho News reported Sunday.

Law enforcement had been made aware of the alleged abuse by Child Protective Services in November and began to investigate the allegations. During the investigation, both the girl and Davenport initially denied that any abuse had occurred. But, according to court documents, Davenport would later acknowledge he was in a "boyfriend" and "girlfriend" relationship with the child.

When investigators searched Davenport's cellphone, they allegedly found several photos of him touching the child in a sexual manner and a video showing him molesting her.

Though the girl's mother denied knowing about the abuse, several other witnesses reportedly countered her claims, according to the Post Register.

"My interviews revealed that it was common knowledge among Bill, [the victim], and [the mother's] social circle that Bill and [the victim] were in a sexual relationship and [the mother] encouraged and condoned the relationship," the detective wrote in a probable cause affidavit.

After detectives discovered that Davenport and the girl shared a bedroom, they ordered DNA samples taken from the girl as well as from several items in the room for examination and testing at the Idaho State Laboratory.

Davenport was arrested last week and made his first court appearance on Thursday, where a judge set his bail at $15,000. If convicted, Davenport could serve up to a life sentence in prison. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 24.

Detectives have reportedly recommended that the victim's mother be charged with injury to a child, but court records indicate that the mother has not yet been charged for her alleged involvement. Officials noted that the incident is still under investigation.

A Pakistani-American businessman awaiting sentencing on federal charges developed close ties to members of Joe Biden’s inner circle and met multiple times with him when he served as vice president, emails show.

A longtime aide to Biden urged Hunter Biden to cultivate a relationship with the businessman, Imaad Zuberi, and other major Democratic donors, in order to “pull them in a little closer to Team Biden,” one email shows.

Zuberi later met multiple times with Joe Biden, according to the emails. In one meeting, Zuberi told Saudi Arabia’s ambassador about Biden’s comments about the Iran nuclear deal.

Zuberi and two business partners also met with Joe Biden in November 2014 in Morocco, emails show.

After the presidential election in 2012, a longtime adviser to Joe Biden urged the then-vice president’s sons, Hunter and Beau, to cultivate relationships with a group of wealthy political donors in order to “pull them in a little closer to Team Biden,” according to an email obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation.

One of the sought-after donors was Imaad Zuberi, a politically-connected Pakistani-American businessman now awaiting sentencing on charges of tax evasion, obstruction, campaign finance violations and foreign agent violations.

Federal prosecutors have accused Zuberi of using millions of dollars in political contributions — many of them illegal — to cozy up to both Democratic and Republican politicians to help his personal business interests and to strengthen his ties to multiple foreign governments.

Whether Hunter Biden developed a relationship with Zuberi is unclear from the emails obtained by the DCNF. But the jet-setting businessman did have subsequent meetings with Joe Biden, including one in Beverly Hills in 2014 in which the pair discussed Saudi Arabia’s concerns with U.S. negotiations over the Iran nuclear deal.

Zuberi reported details of the conversation back to Saudi Arabia’s ambassador, according to communications released as part of Zuberi’s criminal case last year.

Zuberi and two of his business associates also met with Joe Biden in Morocco in November 2014, according to Obama White House emails released last week in Zuberi’s case.

“Here are your business partner’s photos with The Vice President of the United States of America,” reads the email, which included a photo of Biden with Zuberi and his two business partners. Prosecutors published the photo but blacked out the two Zuberi associates. They are also not identified in other court documents.

According to Obama White House records, Biden met with Morocco’s King Mohammed VI and spoke at the Global Entrepreneurship Summit in Marrakesh during the trip.

Mississippi Rep. Bennie Thompson is suing former President Donald Trump and his lawyer Rudy Giuliani, plus pro-Trump groups including the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys, for allegedly inciting the January 6 riot at the Capitol.

Thompson sued the former president on Tuesday for allegedly conspiring with Giuliani and the so-called “extremist” groups for supposedly attempting to prohibit the Senate from certifying the election results in which Democrat Joe Biden emerged victorious. The suit was filed by Washington lawyer Joseph Sellers and African American advocacy group the NAACP on behalf of Thompson.

Rather than focusing on allegations of incitement, Thompson’s suit claims Trump and his co-defendants “plotted, coordinated, and executed a common plan to prevent Congress from discharging its official duties in certifying the results of the presidential election.”

Giuliani and Trump specifically “engaged in a concerted campaign to misinform their supporters and the public, encouraging and promoting intimidation and violence in furtherance of their common plan” to promote Trump’s re-election “and to disrupt the legally required process before Congress to supervise the counting of the Electoral College ballots and certify the results of that count,” the suit charges.

As a result, Thompson was “hindered and impeded in the discharge of his official duties,” intimidated while attempting to serve in his official functions “when the Capitol was under attack,” and “suffered emotional distress,” the suit claims, demanding “an award of compensatory damages,” as well as “punitive damages” to deter others from behaving similarly in the future.

The lawsuit alleges a violation of the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871, which was enacted to prevent conspiracies that used “violence and intimidation” to “prevent Members of Congress from discharging their official duties.”

Somehow the disgraced Lincoln Project is even more disgraced now as news broke Monday of a second underage boy allegedly preyed upon by the left-wing super PAC’s cofounder John Weaver.

During an appearance on Laura Ingraham’s Fox News program, journalist Ryan Girdusky said, “I’m here to say I have made contact with another minor who was sexually harassed by John Weaver. He is still a minor today… John Weaver aggressively sexually harassed him.”

He added, “The allegations involving minors are now multiple, and there’s possibly more to come.”

Girdusky, who originally broke this story wide open, said that even though a month has passed since the story hit, he is still hearing from new people about Weaver’s alleged harassment — his pattern of soliciting young men by offering them “jobs and internships in exchange for sex.”

Girdusky clarified that these are not just verbal accusations. The alleged harassment involves direct messages by way of Twitter from Weaver to these young men. If they are indeed from Weaver, this is written proof of his behavior.

According to multiple sources, the Lincoln Project knew all about Weaver’s alleged predations going back as far as March 2020 but did nothing about it. The grift was just too lucrative. The far-left group scammed close to $90 million from gullible leftists, and only a third of that went to television advertising.

Unfortunately, there is nothing at all surprising about any of this. While everything is still in the “alleged” phase, we know for a fact that men who prey on children do not stop with just one.

Secondly, we also know that Washington, DC, is a cesspool that either participates in, enables, or tolerates the sexual abuse of children as long as the wrongdoer is a welcome part of the D.C. establishment. If nothing else, Jeffrey Epstein taught us that.

Epstein’s predations were an open secret in D.C. Weaver’s alleged predations were an open secret in D.C. going back, according to Karl Rove, to at least 1988.

Steve Schmidt, a Lincoln Project cofounder (who resigned in disgrace last week), was a Rove protégé.

China has been quietly exploring the economic damage it could inflict to US and European companies - including defense contractors - if they were to impose export 'restrictions' on 17 rare-earth materials, according to a report in the Financial Times.

Notably, the US government relies on these rare earths for the manufacture of F-35 jets and other sophisticated weaponry, which use them for critical components such as electrical power systems and magnets.

"The government wants to know if the US may have trouble making F-35 fighter jets if China imposes an export ban," said one Chinese government adviser who spoke on condition of anonymity.

One rare earth metal for example, samarium cobalt, is used in precision guided missiles and fighter jets, and advanced communications systems.
