TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The anti-government movement in Thailand and the resistance to the Myanmar coup have one clear thing in common. The two of them both used three finger greetings to symbolize their form of resistance. The three finger greetings are not an original Thai or Myanmar creation, but are taken from a novel and film.

The novel and film in question is Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games. Suzanne Collins originally created the three-finger greeting to symbolize three expressions: thank you, proud, and goodbye. Later, as the story progressed, the greeting became a symbol of resistance by the main character, Katniss Everdeen, to authoritarian rule.

Thailand has adopted this spirit since 2014. In Thailand, the three-finger greeting represents the three demands. The three are reforming the parliament, reforming the constitution, and ending intimidation of the people. In Myanmar, the meaning is not much different.

Health worker shows a Three Finger greeting for a photo in Yangon, Myanmar, February 3, 2021. This greeting is a symbol of support for Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar's top civilian leader who was overthrown and opposed the leaders of a military coup. HNIN YI WIN / HO REUTERS

The three-finger greeting first appeared in Myanmar when the Civil Uprising Movement was formed on Wednesday, February 3, 2021. Doctors and medical staff, who were on strike and unwilling to serve the military government, waved the Hunger Games three-finger greeting while wearing masks and blue surgical gowns. .

The three-finger greeting was used by them to symbolize rejection of military rule and demands for the release of State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint. As reported, the two, along with several government party officials, have been detained by General Min Aung Hlaing since last Monday.

Quoted from Reuters, Myanmar's inspiration to use the same symbol as Thailand is more or less because of the closeness of the two. Both share the same borders. Myanmar migrant workers, on the other hand, also mostly work in Thailand. As a result, it is not surprising that the three finger greeting spreads rapidly, especially since it has been used since 2014.

The uprising by Myanmar citizens has not borne fruit so far. As of this writing, the Myanmar government responded by turning off access to social media, especially Facebook. Facebook, in Myanmar, is often seen as a synonym of the internet.

The Myanmar government, which has been taken over by the military, said Facebook was being used to spread fake news and misinformation. This, they said, had the potential to disrupt the stability and security of Myanmar. For some Burmese citizens, the blocking actually strengthened the image of the Myanmar coup.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-myanmar-politics-salute/first-thailand-now-myanmar-asia-protesters-borrow-from-hunger-games-idUSKBN2A32JE

(Reuters) - Wearing face masks and red ribbons on their blue protective gowns, the group of Yangon medics raised three-finger salutes in a gesture of support for Myanmar’s ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi and defiance towards the leaders of a military coup.

In the country’s second city Mandalay, the gesture was repeated by healthcare workers at a coronavirus treatment centre, some of whom held a banner that read: “We support civil disobedience movement.”

Two senior members of Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy posted pictures of themselves making the same gesture on social media following Monday’s takeover by the military.

The salute - three fingers pointing up with palm away from the body - stems from the popular “Hunger Games” movies, based on Suzanne Collins’ dystopian novels. But in recent years it has been adopted by protesters against authoritarian rule in Asia.

Popularised by Jennifer Lawrence’s character, Katniss Everdeen, in the “Hunger Games” the gesture became a symbol of the revolution and rebellion against totalitarian rule in fictional nation Panem.

It began appearing on the streets in 2014, when it was seized on by protesters in Thailand as a tactic to defy a ban on public gatherings imposed after a coup in May.

Later that year, young pro-democracy campaigners in Hong Kong also adopted the salute in their campaign for fully democratic elections.

The salute was widely seen again in Thailand - which shares a border with Myanmar and where many migrants from Myanmar work - last year, during months of protests calling for the removal of the government led by the 2014 coup leader and reforms to the monarchy.

Green River Killer Gary Ridgway and other inmates may likely get a COVID-19 vaccine before desperate grandparents who have been struggling to even make an appointment.

Washingtonians over the age of 65 who haven’t committed any felonies are worried about their well-being as they desperately seek vaccinations. And newly released documents indicate the general public won’t get a vaccine until the summer, which will stall our ability to return to any semblance of normalcy.

Yet Washington inmates have already started to receive their vaccines.

Washingtonians have struggled to find vaccine availability for weeks. Appointments have been cancelled at the last minute thanks to redirected vaccines, and mass vaccination sites have been prematurely shut down due to vaccine shortages.

In a Feb. 2 memo, the Department of Corrections (DOC) announced that as of Feb. 1, “they began vaccinating members of the incarcerated population that are over the age of 65.”

Republican lawmakers are stepping up pressure on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, alleging her use of a secret entrance at the Capitol violated her own metal detector screening rules and should merit a fine.

"Play by the rules Madam Speaker," Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, tweeted on Saturday night. "Multiple members saw you enter the Chamber without going through YOUR metal detectors. Pay the $5,000 fine."

"Yesterday, at approximately 9:59 a.m., multiple members observed the Speaker of the House entering the House Chamber without completing security screening," Davis' letter read. "What was observed was a clear violation of House Resolution 73 and you are required by House Rules to impose this fine. Please inform us once the fine has been assessed."

The head of the social media company CloutHub this week defended publishing a video by MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell in which he presented alleged proof of election fraud.

CloutHub executive Jeff Brain argued in making decision that Lindell, and everyone, should enjoy the freedom to share their views.

Lindell, a vocal supporter of former President Trump, has come under fire in recent weeks for his repeated assertions of a stolen 2020 election. His lately published video constituted what he claimed was "ultimate proof" of that theft.

CURRENT BAKER

CURRENT BAKER

And Bakers in general

The Global "The Dick Act of 1902 - Gun control is forbidden" link contains false information.

I am asking you to remove the link from the Globals.

Yesterday I researched this issue and posted my findings and analysis here >>>/qresearch/12842635 (PB) but erred by prematurely posting without including the source document. I did follow up immediately with a 2nd post here >>>/qresearch/12842657 (PB) in which I posted the sauce.

The sauce is a color photocopy of the Act and commentary from the Library of Congress, which I am putting here: https://www.loc.gov/resource/rbc0001.2012yapam90993/?sp=20

The Dick Act does NOT forbid gun control. It does NOT allow for "unorganized militia" to buy and own whatever weapons and ammo they want to, in whatever quantities. None of that language is found in the Dick Act. The ONLY thing that this Global gets right is, it sets out there is the Regular Army, the organized militia in the form of the National Guard, and the Enrolled Militia which is every able-bodied American male (and aliens intending to become US citizens) between the ages of 18-45 years. That, quite literally, is the only part of this Global that is correct.

The rest of it is grossly false and misleading. The existing Global contains only a sliver of correct factual information and uses that to wrap around bullshit opinion, and is poorly sauced to boot.

I appreciate you hearing me out. I'm not attacking any Baker in asking this, I am simply asking you to look at the Act itself and determine that this Global is fake and shouldn't be there.

The investigation into hush money paid to conceal former President Donald Trump's alleged affairs with Karen McDougal and Stormy Daniels has not been resuscitated since he left office.

While there was speculation that the case might be opened again, the Associated Press reported that "several people involved in the case say the U.S. attorney's office in Manhattan" has not taken any steps in that direction and probably will not do so in the future.

"Federal prosecutors infamously referred to Trump as 'Individual-1' in charging Cohen with skirting campaign contribution rules by arranging six-figure payments to Daniels and McDougal, a former Playboy model, to keep them quiet about years-old affairs that Trump consistently denied," according to the wire service.

LAPDOG: Marco Rubio Unveils Law That Would Ban Guns For Anyone Ever Investigated For ‘Domestic Terrorism’

Marco Rubio reintroduces legislation that would strip guns from anyone investigated for domestic terrorism, even if there are no charges.

Failed presidential candidate Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) has introduced legislation that would strip the Second Amendment rights of any individual who was simply investigated for domestic terrorism, even if they were not charged or convicted for committing an actual crime.

On February 2, Rubio reintroduced the bill he has been pushing since the Orlando Pulse radical Islamic terrorist attack in 2016. The bill calls for stripping individuals under investigation for domestic terrorism of their ability to own or purchase firearms, a move Rubio somehow suggests would “also provide more authority for law enforcement agencies to go after suspected terrorists, while safeguarding law-abiding citizens’ Second Amendment and due process rights.”

According to Rubio’s website, the bill would “When an individual who was the subject of a federal terrorism investigation within the last 10 years tries to obtain a firearm, allow the U.S. Attorney General to delay the purchase or transfer for up to ten business days and file an emergency petition in court to prevent the transfer. If the court finds probable cause that the individual is or has been engaged in terrorism, the Attorney General may arrest the individual.”

Under the Biden regime, the current Attorney General is Merrick Garland, who has fantasized about taking guns from American citizens since the early 2000s.

Rubio reentered the bill during the hysteria following the Capitol Hill protest on January 6, during which the only death by a firearm was Ashli Babbitt, who was slain by a D.C. police officer. The officer will face no punishment.

This comes as past intelligence officials who are friendly to the Joe Biden regime essentially classify the overwhelming majority of Republicans as domestic terrorists.

As National File recently reported, former CIA Counterterrorism Center director Robert Grenier compared American citizens to violent Muslim “insurgents,” writing in the New York Times, “As a former overseas operative who has struggled both on the side of insurgents and against them, the past few days have brought a jarring realization: We may be witnessing the dawn of a sustained wave of violent insurgency within our own country, perpetrated by our own countrymen.”

Trump Lawyers To Use Videos Of Democrats Inciting Violence During Impeachment Defense

Former President Donald Trump’s lead impeachment defense attorney Bruce Castor said he will use video clips of top Democrats inciting violence during the coming impeachment trial.

Castor said the defense team will adhere to the strategy outlined in the brief they submitted to the Senate on Tuesday.

The Trump defense team argued in the brief that the Constitution “requires that a person actually hold office to be impeached” and that Trump was exercising his First Amendment right of free speech to question the results of the November election.

The impeachment against Trump goes against the Constitution because Trump doesn’t hold any office after he left the White House on Jan. 20, the lawyers argued.

Castor revealed that the defense team will use some video clips of top Democrats encouraging violence during the impeachment trial which is scheduled to start on Monday.

“I think you can count on that,” he told Fox’s Laura Ingraham.

“If my eyes look a little red to the viewers, it’s because I have been looking at a lot of videos the last couple of days.”

"There Is No Modern Precedent": American Murder Rate Soars 30% In 2020

Many Americans probably aren't surprised to learn that 2020 was one of the most violent years in recent memory, a solid break with the decades-long trend of lower national crime rates (with certain stubborn exceptions among bombed out rust-belt cities…and Baltimore). In addition to BLM marches across the nation that enabled waves of looting, along with more than a dozen killed, 2020 was, generally speaking, a year of unrest as millions of Americans, trapped inside their own homes, lashed out.

A wave of headlines warning about the spike in crime has now been confirmed: US murder rates saw a "historic" increase in 2020 vs. 2019, with more than 1.2K additional killings year-over-year in a sample of 34 American cities, the biggest being NYC, the smallest being Norfolk, Va.

Keep in mind, this isn't the official FBI report on crime data, which will no doubt include a fair bit of "massaging", as government reports like these often do. The report, cited by Fox News and others, was published by the National Commission of COVID-19 and Criminal Justice (NCCCJ), a non-profit group created in July of last year that includes former AG Loretta Lynch as a co-chair.

Lawmakers lay blame on Trump over riot as second impeachment trial looms

Republican and Democratic members of Congress on Sunday weighed in on the second impeachment trial of former President Trump, set to begin in the Senate this week.

While some Republicans laid blame on Trump for encouraging a mob to storm the Capitol last month to contest his 2020 presidential election loss, they continued to question the legality of an impeachment trial of a former president.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), one of Trump’s most vocal supporters during his presidency, affirmed his opposition to a trial, citing Trump's having left the White House.

"I think I'm ready to move on. I'm ready to end the impeachment trial because I think it's blatantly unconstitutional," Graham said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

However, the South Carolina senator suggested history would hold Trump responsible for the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. In January, the House impeached Trump for a historic second time on charges of inciting the riot. Ten Republican lawmakers voted in favor of impeachment, with many acknowledging that casting such a vote likely meant the end of their political careers.

“He had a consequential presidency. Jan. 6 was a very bad day for America, and he'll get his share of blame in history,” Graham said.

Graham said after the insurrection that Trump’s presidency had been “tarnished” by his role in the riot but that he did not back the use of the 25th Amendment to remove him from office.

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) took the opposite track, telling Fox News host Chris Wallace that “impeachment comes not only with the provision to remove an individual from office but to disqualify them from future office. I don’t think our job ends just because the president has left office.”

Murphy said the chamber was undecided on whether to call witnesses in the trial because, unlike the phone call to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, for which Trump was impeached in 2019, “we saw what happened in real time. President Trump sent that angry mob to the Capitol on live TV, so it’s not as important that we have witnesses.”

Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), meanwhile, called the trial a “meaningless messaging partisan exercise.” He said impeachment was not meant to be used to hold someone accountable who was no longer in office.

“Now, if there are other ways, in the court of public opinion, or if some criminal charge dawns on some prosecutor, perhaps here's another avenue there,” wicker told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos.

Stephanopoulos brought up Wicker’s earlier comments that the impeachment of former President Clinton would "protect the long-term national interest of the United States, to affirm the importance of truth and honesty and to uphold the rule of law in our nation."

Wicker responded that Clinton had been determined to have committed perjury, whereas "I’m not conceding that President Trump incited an insurrection.”

French court finds France failed to meet its own Paris Agreement climate commitments

The hypocrisy

A French court declared France was guilty of failing to meet its own climate change goals that it had committed to when it signed the international agreement named after its own capital city. The lawsuit brought by four environmental groups claimed that France was not living up to the terms agreed upon in the Paris Agreement.

France, which brokered the 2015 international treaty on climate change, committed to reducing greenhouse gases by 40% by 2030. France also pledged to be carbon neutral by 2050. However, four non-governmental organizations said the French government wasn't doing enough to curb climate change and was "responsible for ecological damage."

The NGOs include environmental groups Greenpeace France, Oxfam France, "It's Everyone's Business," and "The Foundation for Nature and Mandking." Two years ago, the environmental groups organized a petition to denounce "climate inaction" by the French government. The petition received 2 million signatures within a month. In March 2019, the organizations filed a lawsuit against France, according to CBS News.

The lawsuit alleges that France's greenhouse gas emissions "dropped at a pace that was twice as slow as the trajectories foreseen under the law."

On Wednesday, Paris' administrative court ruled that the French government was guilty of not living up to climate change expectations. The court ordered France to pay one euro ($1.20) for moral damage to each of the associations behind the lawsuit. Judges told the state to focus their efforts on meeting the greenhouse gas reduction goals set forth by the Paris Climate Accord.

The administrative tribunal declared that it would reevaluate the country's climate change efforts in two months and determine if further measures should be taken against the government over their climate crisis response.

"The judges examined whether there was a causal link between this ecological damage and the various breaches alleged against the state in the fight against climate change. They held that the state should be held responsible for part of this damage if it failed to meet its commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions," the court statement said.

Despite only symbolic punishments levied against the French government, the NGOs were excited over the court's ruling.

"This decision marks a first historic victory for the climate and a major advance in French law," the organizations said in a joint statement. "This judgment also marks a victory for the truth: Until now, the state has denied that its climate policies were insufficient, despite mounting evidence."

"This is the first recognition by the courts of the responsibility of the French State for its climate inaction," Clementine Baldon, a lawyer for one of the NGOs, said.

President Joe Biden signed an executive order on his first day in office to rejoin the Paris Agreement. Former President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the Paris Climate Accord during his presidency.

I knew it…

'GameStop Isn’t a Popular Uprising'

An exclusive look at the data indicates that big players are driving the price, not the little guy trading “stonks.”

https://washingtonmonthly.com/2021/02/03/gamestop-isnt-a-popular-uprising/

The investors’ struggle over the video game retailer GameStop has been cast as a David versus Goliath story. Allegedly, this is the tale of scrappy, small online day traders buying shares of a beleaguered company to thwart a hedge fund scheme to take it down. Like GameStop’s stock, this narrative is mostly speculation because the facts about the buyers and sellers and their trades are hidden in the records of Robinhood, the new online trading platform, as well as Charles Schwab and other traditional broker-dealers. Only the SEC could demand to inspect those records.

Yet, certain facts are publicly available, including GameStop’s daily trading volume, its daily prices, the number of short sales of its stock, and how many shares are held by big institutional players. Those facts suggest that the Reddit online traders have been on the sidelines of a trading war among a handful of big institutional investors. The SEC should subpoena the records because the hard data also suggest that some big players may be using trading strategies used in the past to manipulate stock prices.

(snip)

Based on the data, that is what happened when GameStop’s share price and trading volume took off. Big players were driving the price up (and sometimes down), not the rascally Reddit crowd. On January 13, the stock’s trading volume ballooned to 145 million shares, and its price jumped from $19.95 to $31.00. In one day, the total shares held by all investors (46.9 million) turned over more than three times – and that was only an overture. By Friday, January 22, GameStop’s share price reached $56.04 on volume of 197 million shares, and the following Monday, it jumped to $76.79 per-share on trading of 178 million shares. Over the rest of last week (January 26-January 29), GameStop’s share prices gyrated from $148 to $347 to $194 to $325 on average trading volume of 126 million shares per day.

Unless most of the Reddit bunch have assets in the top one-tenth of one percent of Americans, they were mere bystanders to last week’s trading of 682 million shares at an average price of $218.20 – purchases totaling nearly $150 billion in a wildly volatile market. Only institutional investors have such resources to trade stocks, not self-styled populists with Robinhood on their iPhones. Since most big players are regulated public corporations with fiduciary responsibilities to avoid the enormous risks involved in this high-stakes game of chicken, the GameStop players almost certainly are all lightly regulated hedge funds.

The trading volume and price gyrations also suggest that those hedge funds may be manipulating the market. The financial media has made much about Melvin Capital, a short-selling hedge fund that thought GameStop was overpriced at $31 per share (its January 13 price) or perhaps even at $16.48 (its average price in December). Believing the price would fall, Melvin Capital directed its broker-dealer to borrow millions of shares held by other institutional investors and sell them on its behalf to someone else. Those short sales were Melvin Capital’s bet that GameStop’s price would fall, so it could buy cheaper shares to replace the shares it had borrowed—and pocket a fortune.

But the data tells us that Melvin Capital was not the biggest short-seller and that much of the short-selling of GameStop shares was manipulation. A stock’s short sales are publicly reported twice monthly.

(snip)

Consider again a manipulator who bought 500,000 blocks of GameStop shares when the market closed last January 26 (at $148 per share) and sold them as the market closed on January 27 (at $347 per share). He or she walked away with nearly $100 million in profits. If another manipulator pulled the same trick from the market close on January 28 (at $194 per share) to the market close on the 29th (at $325 per share), he or she pocketed $65.5 million in profits. And all of the trading in this period appears to involve a relative handful of large buyers and sellers carrying out trades so large that they drive the price up or down.

In effect, hedge funds may have manipulated GameStop in opposite directions, wringing out profits daily or even two or three times a day. If this is correct, the GameStop saga is not some populist uprising but a rolling version of “pump and dump,” a classic form of manipulation and naked shorting. At a minimum, the facts already known call for an SEC investigation with subpoena power focused on the broker-dealers’ handling of these transactions.

Trump signed a memorandum on declassifying Russigate docs, NOT order

While essentially the same thing, memorandum don't have to be published in the Federal Register. Which means, that Biden probably revoked Trump's momorandum in secret.

>An executive memorandum is effectively an executive order. They also interpret existing legislation and precedent, and advise agencies on how to act. The only real difference is that there is no established process for how presidents issue or publish executive memoranda. For example, memoranda do not have to be submitted to the Federal Register and may be issued without publication.
