Could have "our own mutant that's being more easily transmissible

Dr. Anthony Fauci says it’s a “possibility” a new, mutated strain of the COVID-19 virus could be behind a sudden spike in cases across the U.S., which had dropped dramatically since April.

Fauci, an immunologist and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases who served on the White House Coronavirus Task Force, said the new rise in the U.S. is similar to what’s been occurring in the United Kingdom, where a new strain emerged last month.

“It could be — a possibility — that we have our own mutant that’s being more easily transmissible,” Fauci told The Washington Post on Monday. “We don’t know. We’re looking for it…If you look at the slope of our curve, which is very steep, it looks a bit like the curve in the UK.”

The White House Coronavirus Task Force last week “there may be a USA variant that has evolved here, in addition to the UK variant that is already spreading in our communities,” according to reports obtained by CNN. But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says it has found no evidence of that a new strain of the virus in in the U.S., while other health experts say the sudden spike in cases could be happening because of other causes.

“Based on scientific understanding of viruses, it is highly likely there are many variants evolving simultaneously across the globe,” a CDC spokesman said in a statement emailed to CNN.

“Additionally, there is a strong possibility there are variants in the United States; however, it could weeks or months to identify if there is a single variant of the virus that causes COVID-19 fueling the surge in the United States similar to the surge in the United Kingdom,” the spokesman added.

“Researchers have been monitoring U.S. strains since the pandemic began, including 5,700 samples collected in November and December. To date, neither researchers nor analysts at CDC have seen the emergence of a particular variant in the United States as has been seen with the emergence of B.1.1.7 in the United Kingdom or B.1.351 in South Africa.”

On Dec. 31, Fauci predicted that a new, more contagious COVID-19 strain that first appeared in the U.K. will spread across the U.S., but he added that “it does not appear to be more virulent.”

“We predicted it would be, when you have so much of it in the U.K., which then spread to other countries in Europe and Canada, it was inevitable that it would be here,” Fauci said. “You’ll be hearing reports from other states and more cases in the state that is already reported. Unfortunately, that’s just the reality of the way these viruses spread.”

The first case of the strain found in the U.S. was detected on Jan. 5 in a Colorado resident who had not traveled abroad. “Today we discovered Colorado’s first case of the COVID-19 variant B.1.1.7, the same variant discovered in the UK,” Democratic Colorado Gov. Jared Polis wrote on Twitter. “The health and safety of Coloradans is our top priority and we will monitor this case, as well as all COVID-19 indicators, very closely.”

Atop the Powerful Budget Committee at Last, Bernie Sanders Wants to Go Big

Shortly before the 2016 election, Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, the Republican nominee for vice president and the speaker of the House, told a group of college Republicans why he thought Democrats winning control of the Senate would be a policy nightmare.

“Do you know who becomes chair of the Senate Budget Committee?” Ryan asked. “A guy named Bernie Sanders. You ever heard of him?”

Republicans have long feared the prospect of Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist from Vermont, taking the helm of the powerful committee given his embrace of bigger government and more federal spending with borrowed money. With Democrats reclaiming the Senate, that fear is about to become a reality. Sanders, the most progressive member of the chamber, will have a central role in shaping and steering the Democrats’ tax and spending plans through a Congress that they control with the slimmest of margins.

Sanders, an independent who caucuses with the Democrats and twice ran unsuccessfully for the party’s presidential nomination, said he would move quickly in his new role to push through a robust and deficit-financed economic stimulus package soon after President-elect Joe Biden takes office.

“I believe that the crisis is of enormous severity and we’ve got to move as rapidly as we can,” Sanders said in an interview.

“Underline the word aggressive,” he said. “Start out there.”

Despite Democrats’ narrow control of the Senate, Sanders is expected to exert heavy influence over taxes, health care, climate change and several other domestic issues. That is because his role as budget chairman will give him control over a little-known but incredibly powerful congressional tool that allows certain types of legislation to win Senate approval with just a simple majority.

That tool — a budget mechanism called reconciliation — allows Congress to move some legislation without gaining 60 votes. It has become the vehicle for several major legislative efforts this century, including tax cuts under President Donald Trump and President George W. Bush, and the final version of President Barack Obama’s signature health care bill.

The reconciliation process begins with lawmakers adopting a budget resolution, originating in the House and Senate Budget Committees, which can include directions to congressional committees on how much to increase federal spending or taxes.

The nature of the process effectively gives Sanders a leading role in deciding how expansive — and expensive — Biden’s ambitions for new taxes and spending will be.

Sanders said in the interview that he wanted an initial emergency stimulus package to be “big.” He thinks it must include an additional $1,400 in direct payments for adults and children, on top of the $600 that Congress just passed, along with money for states and cities to fund coronavirus vaccine distribution, testing and contact tracing. He also wants to create an emergency universal health care program, so that anyone can get medical treatment during the pandemic, whether or not they have insurance.

Sanders said he had been speaking with Biden about the scale and timing of stimulus legislation. He said that he did not intend to try to force his long-held priorities, such as “Medicare for All,” into a relief bill. However, he does intend to test the legal bounds of how reconciliation can be used so that Democrats can pass policies that go beyond traditional budget items and address “structural problems in American society.”

Neither Sanders nor Biden has specified the exact size of the next stimulus bill, though the president-elect is expected to outline his economic plan on Thursday. Sanders said the legislation, which could cost more than $1 trillion, should look to raise revenue in “a progressive manner,” suggesting he would push to include tax increases on the wealthy and on corporations. Under Senate procedure, the details of any tax increases would come from the Finance Committee and be spearheaded by a liberal Democrat, Ron Wyden of Oregon, who has also vowed to move aggressively on stimulus and raising taxes for corporations and the rich.

“You have to start with the proposition that everybody has to pay their fair share.” Wyden said in an interview.

The ADL should be calling for an investigation into Facebook, where the protests were actually organized. Gab is great for a lot of things, but it’s not a utility for organizing events. Facebook, on the other hand, has a dedicated Events feature and there were many Event pages organizing the Jan 6th protests on their platform and several massive Facebook Groups as well.

Facebook has billions of users, up until last week our site only had about 1.5m users (although this is rapidly growing now by millions.) Facebook is also home to Facebook Messenger, which according to data is by far the largest distributor of child pornography on the internet. Funny how the ADL doesn’t seem to care about that.

We worked diligently with law enforcement and spent several weeks warning our community about this behavior and taking swift action to remove it from our platform in the weeks prior to the January 6th protest. Google Pausing All Political Ads, Airbnb Canceling All DC Reservations This Week

Google has informed its advertising partners that beginning Jan. 14, its platforms will block all political ads, as well as any related to the Capitol insurrection, "following the unprecedented events of the past week and ahead of the upcoming presidential inauguration," Axios reports citing an internal email.

Advertisers won’t be able to run any political ads or ads ”referencing candidates, the election, its outcome, the upcoming presidential inauguration, the ongoing presidential impeachment process, violence at the U.S. Capitol, or future planned protests on these topics,” according to the email, which also said that "there will not be any carveouts in this policy for news or merchandise advertisers."

The ban applies to ads running through Google’s ad tech platforms including Google Ads, DV360, YouTube, and AdX Authorized Buyer.

The company said it will be “extremely vigilant” about enforcing its Dangerous and Derogatory Content policy, and added that it will "carefully examine a number of factors before deciding to lift this policy for advertisers," but that the current plan is to keep this policy in place until at least Jan. 21, after inauguration.

Google's announcement is in line with a broader strategy that the tech giant has been using for years to prevent confusion around sensitive events. In March and early April, it implemented a temporary ban on advertising with COVID-19-related terms to stop confusion from spreading around fake goods or price-gouging related to the pandemic.

Separately, Airbnb announced on Wednesday morning that it will cancel reservations in DC area during inauguration week, saying that the company has "identified numerous individuals who are either associated with known hate groups or otherwise involved in the criminal activity at the Capitol … they have been banned from Airbnb’s platform."

We are continuing our work to ensure hate group members are not part of the Airbnb community. As we’ve learned through media or law enforcement sources the names of individuals confirmed to have been responsible for the violent criminal activity at the United States Capitol on January 6, we’ve investigated whether the named individuals have an account on Airbnb. GoFundMe will no longer let users raise money to travel to political events that could turn violent, the company said Tuesday, after Trump supporters used the site to raise money for last week's attack on the U.S. Capitol.

"We strongly condemn the violence and attempted insurrection," a GoFundMe spokesman told The Post in an email, "and will continue to remove fundraisers that attempt to spread misinformation about the election, promote conspiracy theories and contribute to or participate in attacks on U.S. democracy."

The attack on the Capitol has prompted condemnation among American corporations. After months of criticism, Twitter permanently banned Trump's account, and Facebook and Instagram suspended his accounts indefinitely. Reddit banned the subreddit r/DonaldTrump, a hub for "stop the steal" conspiracy theorists that encouraged users to go to the Capitol, and Airbnb has said it will ax reservations associated with hate groups or violent activity.

Launched in 2010, GoFundMe has raised over $9 billion from more than 120 million donations, according to its website.

Google admits experimentally blocking some Australian news sites from searches as row over paying outlets for content gains steam

Internet users can't find the latest Aussie news on searches as outlets say Google is flexing its muscles against the country's senate's proposed code that would make it pay media for news.

For days now, some internet users have been wondering why Google searches have omitted the latest updates from Sydney Morning Herald, the Daily Telegraph and other Australian news sites. Now the tech giant has admitted that it is carrying out an "experiment," tweaking its closely guarded algorithm – and only old links are being displayed.

"We're currently running a few experiments that will each reach about one percent of Google search users in Australia to measure the impacts of news businesses and Google search on each other," a spokesman for the company told the Sydney Morning Herald after it wondered why its latest news didn't feature in searches.

He said the experiment would end next month.

The Silicon Valley behemoth is currently in a battle with Aussie regulators over plans to force platforms like Google and Facebook to pay news outlets for using their content. And news outlets affected by the search omissions claim the tech giant is flexing its muscles in a fight over the prospect of paying for news.

A spokesman for Nine, the corporate owners of the Sydney Morning Herald, said Google's experiment was a move by the search engine to show "how easily they can make Australian news providers who fall out of their favor effectively disappear from the internet – a chilling illustration of their extraordinary market power."

Last year, Australia's Competition and Consumer Commission proposed a new code to make the tech giants pay for news content. That code is currently being debated by the nation's senate.

The corporate owners of the search engine are fighting the Aussie proposal and have posted a message on the launching page for Google's Australian searches expressing opposition to the code.

The code has been designed to stem the bleed of advertising money from news publishers to digital platforms and make the share of revenues more even. In 2020 in Australia, Google made $4.3 billion and cornered 53 percent of online advertising revenue. Facebook got 28 percent, and the remaining 19 percent is shared by everyone else.

Biden Personnel Chief Served At Chinese Intel Org Flagged By FBI For Recruiting Western Spies

Thomas Zimmerman, who will serve as a Special Assistant to the President for Presidential Personnel under Joe Biden, formerly served as a visiting scholar at what the FBI has called a “front group for Chinese intelligence collection and overseas spy recruitment,” The National Pulse can reveal.

While at New York University’s Center on International Cooperation, Zimmerman also served as a fellow at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, flagged by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for its close ties to the Chinese Communist Party’s top spy agency, the Ministry of State Security.

The Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS), which the FBI views as a “front group for Chinese intelligence collection and overseas spy recruitment,” was involved in a 2019 criminal case involving a retired Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) operative selling classified U.S. defense documents to China.

The operative, Kevin Mallory, was contacted by a SASS official via LinkedIn to begin the relationship that culminated in a 20-year prison sentence for Mallory.

The FBI has described the Chinese Communist Party as relying on SASS employees as “spotters and assessors” of potential Western spies. Ministry of State Security officers – described by the FBI as keen on “influencing the foreign policy of other countries” – have also “used SASS affiliation as cover identities,” according to the FBI.

A Homeland Security Today article describes Zimmerman’s association with the think tank as a “visiting scholar” focusing “on Afghanistan, Somalia, and Chinese regional policy.”

Zimmerman has also “hosted an academic salon” alongside Chinese Communist Party adviser Li Lifan on “topics concerning counter-terrorism in Afghanistan and Pakistan, security issues in Central Asia, the US perspective on the One Belt One Road initiative, and security issues in South Asia” at the Shanghai Institute of American Studies (SIAS).

SIAS is funded by the Chinese Communist Party and “provide[s] advisory services to the central government as well as local decision-makers” in China.

Cumulus Media, America’s third largest owner of AM and FM radio stations, is threatening to fire show hosts who question the results of the 2020 Presidential Election on air.

Cumulus, whose stations are home to household names such as Mark Levin, Chris Plante, and Dan Bongino, reaches over a quarter of a billion listeners every month, with programming broadcast through 416 company-owned-and-operated stations, as well as an additional nearly 8,000 affiliates through Westwood One, a subsidiary of Cumulus.

Cumulus and Westwood One “will not tolerate any suggestion that the election has not ended,” Phillips continued, as the “election has been resolved and there are no alternate acceptable paths.”

“If you transgress this policy, you can expect to separate from the company.”

Cumulus’ new guidelines appear to be in step with a seemingly countless number of other media corporations nationwide, who have long been accused of quashing dissent through intimidation and retribution as well as outright censorship.
