The essential summary of the OIG issue is that someone inside the DOJ Civil Rights Division; someone in charge of the secretive internal agency known as the Community Relations Service (CRS); gave access to the computer database of Main Justice to employment applicants for the CRS. New York Taxpayers Paid $9.5M in Cuomo Legal Fees So Far
Andrew Cuomo, disgraced former governor of New York, has cost the Empire State’s taxpayers $9.5 million and will continue to reap the benefits of a law that makes taxpayers pay legal fees for elected officials.
Cuomo resigned in August over sexual harassment allegations, while various scandals have followed him, from allegedly using state staff to help him earn $5.1 million from a book deal while the state lost 56,000 people to Covid-19, to requiring nursing homes to take in Covid-positive patients and allegedly undercounting the number of people who died there.
Taxpayers have footed the bill for his legal fees, so far costing $9.5 million, and rising ever upward.
According to Politico, that figure breaks down and includes up to $5 million for lawyers who have represented Cuomo’s office, up to $3.5 million for lawyers hired by the state attorney general to investigate sexual harassment allegations against the Democrat, and at least $1 million in bills for lawyers hired by the legislature as part of an impeachment investigation.
It doesn’t include the legal fees of Cuomo’s private attorney, Rita Glavin, whose bills are being paid by his campaign committee.
While Cuomo has been charged criminally for allegedly forcibly groping a former staff member, those charges appear not to be sticking because a sheriff in upstate New York went rogue and filed charges without the knowledge of the district attorney, who was still investigating, and without a sworn statement from the alleged victim.
So, there’s another potential significant cost in play.
That’s because state law says it will reimburse public employees for their legal fees when they are acquitted of criminal charges, or those charges are dismissed.
Cuomo has used his campaign committees to pay for his legal defense, so the reimbursement goes to his campaign account.
“It’s a crazy law,” said state Sen. Mike Gianaris (D-Queens), who for years has sponsored a bill to repeal it.
Crazy indeed. Taxpayers shouldn’t be on the hook for legal fees, especially for someone like Cuomo, who as of July had more than $18 million in his campaign accounts.

North Dakota farmer arrested in Ukraine, accused of trying to assassinate a gov't official; his family says he is being railroaded to cover up other crimes
Two sisters in North Dakota spent Thanksgiving without their beloved brother this year — but not because of work obligations, health problems, or any other reasons that one might expect.
Rather, Kurt Groszhans, a self-described "humble American investor" and farmer from Ashley, North Dakota, is currently detained in Ukraine under suspicion that he attempted to assassinate the country's minister of agriculture.
But his family insists he is the victim of embezzlement and is now being railroaded to cover up the foreign government official's crimes. Now they are pleading for help from the American government to ensure that their brother is treated respectfully and granted a fair trial.
What are the details?
According to local news outlet, Inforum, Groszhans and a Ukrainian woman named Olena Bohach were arrested and placed in pretrial detention this week for allegedly seeking to arrange the assassination of Roman Leshchenko, the country's minister of agrarian policy and food.
Groszhans, whose family emigrated from Ukraine in 1910, started taking trips to the country in the early 2000s and eventually set up a farming company there. That's when he met and decided to go into business with Leshchenko, who at the time, according to Groszhans was just "a middle-class entrepreneur in the agricultural sector."
"He's just a good person, and he just has a passion for farming, and he just loved going back to the country where our ancestors came from," his sister Kimberly Groszhans told Inforum in an interview on Monday. "He didn't do this."
Groszhans himself claimed in a Medium post published in August that he is a "deceived American investor." He described how Leshchenko, who he appointed as the manager of his business, began embezzling funds from his company on his fourth day on the job. The Ukrainian, according to Groszhans, transferred the money into his family's account and also used Groszhans seeds on his family's land.
Groszhans eventually found out and started filing claims against Leshchenko. But while Groszhans was filing lawsuits, Leshchenko was rising to more powerful offices within the Ukrainian government, and eventually, to the office of agriculture minister.

TEHRAN — Iran’s Basij militia has unveiled a video game whose hero is George Floyd, the Black man who was murdered by a white police officer in the US last year.
In the “Nejat-e-Azadi” (Defend Freedom) 3D game, developed by the Basij’s IT department, the player must overcome obstacles and side-step enemies across 30 levels of difficulty.
Iran’s Saheb News, which is close to the Basij — a volunteer Islamic militia loyal to the establishment — said the game was presented Tuesday during a digital production conference it held in Tehran.

Ian Fishback, a former Army officer who in 2005 raised concerns about the treatment of detainees in the Global War on Terror, died Nov. 19 at an adult treatment facility in Michigan. He was 42 years old.
In a statement posted with Fishback’s obituary, the veteran’s family thanked his hometown community in Newberry, Mich., for the support provided Fishback in “recent difficult times.”
“He faced many challenges and many of us felt helpless. We tried to get him the help he needed. It appears the system failed him utterly and tragically. There are many questions surrounding his death and the official cause of death is unknown at this time. We can assure you that we will get to the bottom of this. We will seek justice for Ian, because justice is what mattered most to him,” according to the statement.
He wrote that he sought answers for 17 months, but found none.

An Oct. 4 hospital news bulletin offered fresh data on the efficacy of anti-COVID vaccines on young patients, particularly those with compromised immune systems, conducted by researchers at Bambino Gesù hospital.
“The results of our studies show that it is essential to protect the most fragile categories by administering the third dose of vaccine, calibrating the dosages, or by using new adjuvanted vaccine formulations capable of enhancing the immune response to the virus and maintaining it over time,” said Professor Paolo Palma, Head of Clinical Immunology and Vaccinology at Bambino Gesù.
“At the same time, it is necessary to achieve the widest possible vaccination coverage. The risk of infection is higher among immunosuppressed children and adolescents. Each of us, with our own vaccine, is also responsible for their health,” Palma said.
According to the research results, just 30 percent of immunosuppressed patients showed no response to the COVID vaccines, while 70 percent developed the antibodies to fight the coronavirus. These antibodies were stronger after the second dose, although they were still lower than those found in healthy people.
The study was conducted by researchers at Bambino Gesù on three different groups of immunocompromised patients.

In the first group were 21 patients with primary immunodeficiency, meaning an immune system that does not work properly. The second group was composed of 34 patients undergoing heart and lung transplants, and the third group contained 45 patients with liver and kidney transplants.

Both of these groups were part of a larger study called CONVERS which was conducted by a team of doctors and researchers led by Palma, and which includes three additional studies currently being conducted on patients with HIV, inflammatory bowl disease, and Down’s Syndrome.
The study on young people with liver and kidney transplants was coordinated by researchers from the Renal Transplant Follow-up structure, which is led by a doctor named Luca Dello Strologo.
In each of the three studies, both the serological response to the vaccine, meaning the number of antibodies present in the blood, and the cellular response, meaning the number of specific forms of lymphocytes, or white blood cells, found in the blood, were measured.
Final results of the study found that 3 in 10 patients showed no response to the vaccine, while 7 in 10 developed the antibodies necessary to fight COVID-19.
Researchers’ bottom line from the study results is thatnot only are vaccines effective in warding off COVID-19, but immunity grows after each dose.>>113663
