Biden backtracks on oil drilling ban

US President Joe Biden will apparently allow new leasing of federal lands for oil and natural-gas exploration, though with new restrictions and higher fees on producers, rather than fulfill a campaign promise to halt drilling.

The US Department of Interior issued a long-awaited report on the government’s minerals leasing programs on Friday, recommending that new sales be limited to areas where oil and gas infrastructure already exists. While the plan would prevent opening up new drilling frontiers, such as the Atlantic Seaboard, it allows oil companies to lease new exploration prospects near established fields in places such as the Gulf of Mexico.

Other recommendations include demanding increased royalty payments from oil companies, as well as higher bond payments set aside to cover future cleanup costs.

“Our nation faces a profound climate crisis that is impacting every American,” Interior Secretary Deb Haaland said in a statement. “The Interior Department has an obligation to responsibly manage our public lands and waters – providing a fair return to the taxpayer and mitigating worsening climate impacts – while staying steadfast in the pursuit of environmental justice.”

Biden had already raised the ire of environmental activists earlier this month, when his administration went through with a record offshore lease sale just days after the president spoke at the COP26 summit in Scotland, calling climate change an “existential threat to human existence” and demanding “transformative action.”

EXC: Gates Foundation Sent Over $54 Million To China Since COVID, Including To Wuhan Collaborators.

Since the onset of COVID-19, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has sent over $54 million to fund “global health” projects in China, including to institutions controlled by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and Wuhan Institute of Virology collaborators, The National Pulse can reveal.

Since December 2019, the Foundation has sent a total of 93 grants adding up to $54,573,428 to China-based projects.

Among the grant recipients are several CCP-run institutions including Beijing Normal University, Peking University, Tsinghua University, and official regime bodies including the Ministry of Agriculture, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Ministry of Science and Technology.

China’s CDC has played a key role spearheading the narrative that COVID-19 developed naturally as opposed to tracing its origins to the Wuhan Institute of Virology; the former being a now-debunked conspiracy theory spread by global health authorities, corporate media, and the political left across the world.

Wuhan University received a $127,650 grant from the Foundation in January 2021, despite the school routinely collaborating with the Wuhan Institute of Virology on research, including studies focusing on bat coronaviruses funded by Anthony Fauci.

Boosting Beijing.

Several of the Gates Foundation grants are aimed at empowering China to play a larger role in global health and governance, despite the regime stonewalling efforts to uncover the origins of COVID-19.

In October, the foundation sent $150,000 to China Science and Technology Exchange Center to fund a project “to enhance China’s research and development contribution to global health and development by strengthening partnerships with the government, industry, and academia.”

A further $300,000 was sent to the state-run China Agricultural University in September to “build an enabling environment for supporting China’s engagement in global health.”

Several grants have also focused on broadening the Chinese Communist Party’s role in vaccine development and distribution, including a $300,000 grant to Tsinghua University in August 2020 “to establish a think tank to provide regulatory science research and technical support for vaccine ecosystem building suggestions.”

The alma mater of Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping, Tsinghua University has a history of launching cyberattacks against the U.S. government.

Tsinghua also has a “clear connection between them and the state administration for technology and industry in discussions on what [they] can do to help the national security,” according to former Senior Intelligence Officer in the Defense Intelligence Agency and State Department Official Nicholas Eftimiades.

$120,000 was sent to state-run Zhejiang University in May 2020 to “engage China to play a bigger role in global governance and to contribute more to GAVI.”

GAVI, formerly the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization, describes itself as a “global health partnership of public and private sector organizations dedicated to immunization for all.”

In May 2020, the foundation sent $600,000 to China’s CDC “to support emergency response and evaluation, and prepare China for the potential pandemic, which will not only help disease control and containment but contribute China’s experience to global health.” An additional $400,000 was sent to CanSino Biologics Inc. “to support international collaboration on development of anti-coronavirus vaccines, which will increase the availability of safe and effective vaccines for sustainable, global distribution and use” in April 2020.

The Gates Foundation has also funded projects aimed at expanding China’s role in Africa, including a $170,410 grant to the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences “to support targeted researches and consensus building activities for the drafting of China-Africa Ag Modernization Plan with the aim of better leveraging China’s expertise to facilitate Africa countries’ agricultural transformation.”

District Judge Michael Craig handed down the sentence to ex-Bossier City cop Terry Yetman, 40, who in August pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography and five counts of sexual abuse of an animal.

The sentence reportedly includes four years each for the five counts of sexual abuse of animals and 20 years for the lone count of possession of child pornography. The two sentences will run concurrent with each other for a total of 20 years. Judge Craig also ordered Yetman to register as a sex offender. He was facing a maximum sentence of 45 years in prison.

Yetman, who began working on the force in November 2014 and who reportedly worked a stint in the K-9 unit, was arrested in December 2018 after a multi-month investigation that reportedly began with investigators looking into another Bossier City deputy suspected of obtaining and distributing child pornography. In the course of that investigation, investigators reportedly discovered online conversations between the original target and Yetman in which Yetman said he “would like to have sex with children, both boys and girls,” according to court documents obtained by KTBS.

Yetman reportedly asked the original target for a pair of used underwear that belonged to the target’s 7-year-old daughter. The target provided the underwear to Yetman who reportedly took them to the homes of other child sex predators.

“A forensic examination of videos and images of Yetman’s Apple iCloud account also showed him engaging in explicit sexual acts with his dog and images of pubescent and prepubescent children engaged in sexual activity,” KTBS reported.

Upon Yetman’s arrest, state law enforcement authorities took custody of his dog, which was eventually placed at a rescue shelter in Texas.

Yetman was initially charged with 20 counts of sexual abuse of an animal by filming, distribution and/or possession of pornographic images and twenty counts of sexual abuse of an animal by engaging in sexual contact, per the Shreveport Times. Many of those charges were dismissed after his attorney reached a plea deal with prosecutors.

“The Louisiana State Police Special Victims Unit who was assisted by the Bossier City Marshal’s Office and Department of Homeland Security did an outstanding job on this case. They delivered a very strong case to our office and Assistant District Attorney, Allie Aiello Stahl, did an excellent job prosecuting this case,” District Attorney Schuyler Marvin said. “My office will do everything in our power to prosecute those who prey on children and animals.”

Yetman has remained in custody since his arrest.

On November 25, the Botswanan COVID-19 Task Force reported four new cases of the COVID variant B.1.1.529. All four cases were detected in travelers through routine PCR testing. They noted something interesting about all four cases:

“The preliminary report revealed that all four had been fully vaccinated for COVID-19.”

Yes, all four individuals with detectable cases of B.1.1.529 were fully vaccinated. There have been numerous breakthrough cases of COVID-19 and the Delta variant among the vaccinated. Now, it appears that those who have taken the vaccine may be more susceptible to transmission as this new variant is associated with increased antibody resistance. The report states that they are uncertain if the currently available vaccinations will prevent transmission and suggests “non-pharmaceutical interventions,” such as masks, social distancing, and avoiding unnecessary travel. Governments now have a new reason to reimplement harsh restrictions. The upcoming days and weeks should shine a light on what they plan to do to “stop the spread” since the vaccine is not as “safe and effective” as previously claimed.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Three people are dead and at least four more are injured following a shooting in North Nashville.

The shooting happened in the 2800 block of Torbett Street, just before 10 p.m. Friday.

Police say the shooting happened inside an apartment.

Once police arrived on scene, three people were found dead inside the apartment. Four others were taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and their conditions are unknown.

There is no word on the identities of those involved, but police say it appears all the victims appeared to be young men in their teens or early 20s.

Police are trying to determine the motive at this time. They also say they are not sure if the suspects in the shooting are among those who are dead.

The Biden administration funded “COVID-19 isolation clinics” in Botswana through the Department of Defense, with the sites surveyed in March of this year. The facilities were built and photographed by April 28.

According to a press release published by the U.S. Embassy to Botswana, the United States spent $1,521,956 worth of local currency to build “14 modular structures” that can fit over 100 patients. Botswana was cast in the international spotlight after the emergence of the new Omicron variant of COVID-19, which saw four people in the landlocked African nation diagnosed with the virus.

The Botswana government reported that those who were diagnosed with the Omicron variant were previously “fully vaccinated” against COVID-19, leading some to label the emerging variant that has experts alarmed “The Vaccinated Variant.”

Since the government’s initial press release, it has been established that the four individuals who contracted the Omicron variant were not Botswanan nationals. According to the Botswana government, those diagnosed with the Omicron variant were diplomatic travelers, and those they encountered during their stay in Botswana have been subject to contact tracing. Answering the 1st Amendment with violence

Jurek goes on in reassuring tones to underline his dedication to pluralistic democracy and the 1st amendment:

"Yeah there are consequences to your f*cking actions, right? And if your speech is calling for people to be eliminated on the base of race, gender, religious… like for whatever reason, things that people can’t change, then you should expect a f*ckin’ violent reaction. And you deserve a violent reaction. Because that’s just an unacceptable thing. It’s not acceptable.”

“The only thing that fascists understand is violence. So, the only way you can confront them is with violence.”

This is the first of a series of releases from Project Veritas, so credit James O Keefe with another undercover scoop. The dangerous revolutionary socialist attitude he displays is no different from those who wreak violence at Antifa rallies, or at G-20 summits. This is off the scale of far-left politics during a presidential campaign.

How can Sanders, who stands to sweep the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary, explain the antics of a fairly seasoned field staffer? I doubt that Jurak will be employed much longer, given his newfound notoriety. But he exemplifies a mindset and a breakdown in the rules of decency in our democracy that cannot be overlooked.

For centuries, philosophers and physicists have been pondering the existence of time. Yet, in the classical world, our experience seems to extinguish any doubt that time exists and goes on. Indeed, in nature, processes tend to evolve spontaneously from states with less disorder to states with more disorder, and this propensity can be used to identify an arrow of time. In physics, this is described in terms of 'entropy', which is the physical quantity defining the amount of disorder in a system.

Dr. Giulia Rubino from the University of Bristol's Quantum Engineering Technology Labs (QET labs) and lead-author of the publication, said:

"If a phenomenon produces a large amount of entropy, observing its time-reversal is so improbable as to become essentially impossible. However, when the entropy produced is small enough, there is a non-negligible probability of seeing the time-reversal of a phenomenon occur naturally.

"We can take the sequence of things we do in our morning routine as an example. If we were shown our toothpaste moving from the toothbrush back into its tube, we would be in no doubt it was a rewinded recording of our day. However, if we squeezed the tube gently so only a small part of the toothpaste came out, it would not be so unlikely to observe it re-entering the tube, sucked in by the tube's decompression."

The authors of the study, under the lead of Professor Caslav Brukner of the University of Vienna and the IQOQI-Vienna, applied this idea to the quantum realm, one of whose peculiarities is the principle of quantum superposition, according to which if two states of a quantum system are both possible, then that system can also be in both states at the same time.

"Extending this principle to time's arrows, it results that quantum systems evolving in one or the other temporal direction (the toothpaste coming out of or going back into the tube), can also find themselves evolving simultaneously along both temporal directions.

"Although this idea seems rather nonsensical when applied to our day-to-day experience, at its most fundamental level, the laws of the universe are based on quantum-mechanical principles. This begs the question of why we never encounter these superpositions of time flows in nature," said Dr. Rubino.

Dr. Gonzalo Manzano, co-author from the University of the Balearic Islands, said: "In our work, we quantified the entropy produced by a system evolving in quantum superposition of processes with opposite time arrows. We found this most often results in projecting the system onto a well-defined time's direction, corresponding to the most likely process of the two. And yet, when small amounts of entropy are involved (for instance, when there is so little toothpaste spilled that one could see it being reabsorbed into the tube), then one can physically observe the consequences of the system having evolved along the forward and backward temporal directions at the same time."

Aside from the fundamental feature that time itself might not be well-defined, the work also has practical implications in quantum thermodynamics. Placing a quantum system in a superposition of alternative time's arrows could offer advantages in the performance of thermal machines and refrigerators.

Dr. Rubino said: "Although time is often treated as a continuously increasing parameter, our study shows the laws governing its flow in quantum mechanical contexts are much more complex. This may suggest that we need to rethink the way we represent this quantity in all those contexts where quantum laws play a crucial role."

Thousands flood streets to decry vaccine mandate

A fresh round of rallies against mandatory Covid vaccination has hit Australia, with hundreds of thousands protesting in dozens of cities. Aerial footage captured huge crowds blocking central streets.

New rallies all across the country happened on Saturday, as people demonstrated for more freedom in relation to coronavirus vaccination. Organized by the Millions March Against Mandatory Vaccination group, massive protests swept central Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Perth, along with 30 other cities and towns in Australia.

No official numbers have been published regarding attendances, but various media outlets reported that “hundreds of thousands” took to the streets this weekend. Aerial footage showed cities flooded with sizable crowds.

In Sydney, people of all ages gathered in Hyde Park, carrying banners that read “Never lock down again,” and “Less government, more freedom.” In Melbourne, people protested outside the state parliament and blocked Spring Street while chanting “Sack [Premier of Victoria] Dan Andrews,” in an apparent expression of anger over his controversial pandemic powers legislation.

On the Gold Coast, protesters largely supported the leader of Australia’s right-wing One Nation party, Pauline Hanson. The senator, who has been trying to push a bill against mandatory vaccination policies, addressed the crowds, saying she had spoken with Prime Minister Scott Morrison and told him to change the constitution to facilitate her proposed legislation.

While the rallies were reportedly loud, with people cheering, beating drums and beeping horns, they were largely peaceful. In New South Wales, Health Minister Brad Hazzard officially allowed unvaccinated protesters to attend the Sydney rally, only asking they wear a mask and stay away if feeling unwell.

US Says "All Options" On Table Over Alleged 'Russian Invasion Threat' To Ukraine

The US now says "all options" are on the table in response to an alleged Russian troop build-up near its border with Ukraine. Top officials are set to meet with NATO next week to decide what further steps to take, according to Reuters.

"As you can appreciate, all options are on the table and there’s a toolkit that includes a whole range of options," the assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs, Karen Donfried, told reporters Friday.

Widespread media reports in the West have for more than a past week been warning that about 100,000 Russian troops are mustered near Ukraine's eastern border, poised for an invasion, as an initial Nov.11 Bloomberg story headlined. The Kremlin has repeatedly slammed this as disinformation and part of manufactured attempts at ramping up political pressure against Moscow.

"It's now for the alliance to decide what are the next moves that NATO wants to take," Donfried said. "Next week, we will talk about our assessment of what's happening on Russia's border with Ukraine and we will begin that conversation of what are the options that are on the table and what it is that NATO as an alliance would like to do together," she added.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken is expected to be in Latvia Monday for the NATO foreign ministerial meeting - this after some sharp words from NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who warned Russia on Friday, "If Russia uses force against Ukraine that will have costs, that would have consequences."

However, there's been agreement on all sides that a de-escalation of tensions is urgently needed, though Washington's "all options on the table" rhetoric likely isn't helping, given the phrase in the past has basically pointed to the military option.

Earlier this month Blinken put words to both Kiev and Washington's worst fears amid the Russian troop movement and build-up reports: "Our concern is that Russia may make the serious mistake of attempting to rehash what it undertook back in 2014, when it amassed forces along the border, crossed into sovereign Ukrainian territory and did so claiming — falsely — that it was provoked," he said previously.

DOJ: ‘Modern-Day Slavery’ Scheme Run by Illegal Aliens Trafficked Foreign Visa Workers to Georgia Farms

The Department of Justice (DOJ) released a 54-count indictment that charges 24 individuals, many illegal aliens, with operating a “modern-day slavery” scheme that utilized the H-2A visa program to traffic foreign workers into United States farm jobs — raping, kidnapping, and threatening them in the process.

The indictment accuses the Patricio transnational criminal organization (TCO) — named after its matriarch, 70-year-old Maria Leticia Patricio — of operating a massive forced labor trafficking scheme since 2015 that used the H-2A visa program to traffic foreign workers from Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras into farms jobs in Georgia.

Prosecutors called the scheme “modern-day slavery,” alleging that 24 members of the Patricio TCO engaged in mail fraud, international forced labor trafficking, and money laundering, among other crimes, across Georgia, Florida, and Texas.

According to the indictment, the Patricio TCO raked in more than $200 million from the forced labor trafficking scheme. As part of the scheme, the group sought to traffic more than 71,000 foreign workers to the U.S. using the H-2A visa program.

The H-2A visa program allows farms to bring an unlimited number of foreign workers to the U.S. every year to take American agricultural jobs. As Breitbart News has chronicled for years, the program is often used to replace Americans and preserve the low cost of farm labor.

The Patricio TCO, the indictment alleges, would secure H-2A visas for foreign workers, demand they pay them unlawful fees by keeping their immigration paperwork from them, require them to work in harsh conditions for little-to-no pay, make them reside in brutal living conditions, and would threaten them with deportation if they disobeyed orders.

In some cases, the indictment states, the trafficked foreign workers were required to dig onions in Georgia farms with their bare hands, were paid only 20 cents for each bucket harvested, all while being threatened with violence.

The various Georgia farms that contracted the trafficked foreign workers reside in Atkinson County, Bacon County, Coffee County, Tattnall County, Toombs County, and Ware County.

Members of the Patricio TCO would launder their millions in profits from the scheme through home and land purchases, cars, businesses, and casinos, the indictment alleges. Over the course of the investigation, the indictment states that three members attempted to intimidate witnesses to lie to a federal grand jury.

Two Palestinian news pages, Al-Qastal and Maydan Al-Quds, disappeared from Facebook after the company removed them for ‘violating the community standards’, The New Arab reported.

The editors of the two pages condemned Facebook’s decision, saying that the social media giant is “actively fighting Palestinian content”.

Facebook’s move came only a month after it opened a special investigation on Palestine-Israel content suppression.

The two Palestinian pages reported daily news in Jerusalem from a Palestinian perspective, focusing on Israeli violations against Palestinians in the city.

Following the decision, Sada Social Center – which specializes in protecting the Palestinian narrative on social media platforms – has launched a campaign urging users worldwide to give Facebook a one-star review in the Apple and Google app stores over the social media giant’s ongoing censorship of Palestinian digital content, the official Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.

Facebook came under criticism in October after The Intercept published a leaked list of names that Facebook used to censor content, containing hundreds of names of Palestinian figures and organizations.

2 US defense officials say Israel hacked Iran’s gas system last month — NYT

Cyber assault on Iranian fuel system was followed by hack of Israeli LGBTQ dating site, pointing to new trend of attacks against soft targets, New York Times reports

Israel carried out a cyber attack against Iran’s nationwide fuel system last month, two United States defense officials told the New York Times in a report published Saturday.

Days later, Iran-affiliated hackers breached an Israeli LGBTQ dating site and released details of its users in a cyber attack that roiled Israel.

The exchange points to a new trend of targeting civilians in the shadow war between Israel and Iran. The two attacks appear to be the first that caused widespread harm to civilians, auguring an escalation in the cyber conflict as softer targets are drawn into the line of fire.

The hack of Iran’s gas distribution system began on October 26, shutting down civilian gas pumps and broadcasting digital messages blaming Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The cyber attack brought all of the country’s 4,300 fuel distribution stations to a halt, resulting in traffic jams, long lines at gas stations and other transportation problems.

Technicians were able to fix some pumps within days, but the stations could only sell expensive, unsubsidized fuel. The distribution system did not fully recover until nearly two weeks later.

The attack took place close to the two-year anniversary of mass protests against the government over fuel prices and appeared designed to sow chaos and stoke anti-government sentiment.

At least one Iranian official at the time blamed Israel and the US for the attack.

An official in Iran’s Oil Ministry and an oil dealer told The New York Times that the attackers had also taken over Iran’s fuel storage tanks, and may have accessed data on international oil sales — secret information that could reveal Iranian breaches of international sanctions.

AN investigation has been launched into a spike in deaths among newborn babies in Scotland.

Official figures reveal that 21 infants died during September within 28 days of birth, causing the neonatal mortality rate to breach an upper warning threshold known as the 'control limit' for the first time in at least four years.

Control and warning limits are designed to flag up to public health teams when neonatal, stillbirth or other infant deaths are occurring at unexpectedly high or low levels which may not be due to chance.

Concerns have previously been raised about the potential impact of Covid on maternity services and maternal wellbeing, but it is the first time since the pandemic began that neonatal deaths have been so abnormally above average.

Abstract

Background:Much research shows that blood calcidiol (25(OH)D3) levels correlate strongly with SARS-CoV-2 infection severity.There is open discussion regarding whether low D3 is caused by the infection or if deficiency negatively affects immune defense. The aim of this study was to collect further evidence on this topic. Methods: Systematic literature search was performed to identify retrospective cohort as well as clinical studies on COVID-19 mortality rates versus D3 blood levels. Mortality rates from clinical studies were corrected for age, sex, and diabetes. Data were analyzed using correlation and linear regression. Results: One population study and seven clinical studies were identified, which reported D3 blood levels preinfection or on the day of hospital admission. The two independent datasets showed a negative Pearson correlation of D3 levels and mortality risk (r(17) = -0.4154, p = 0.0770/r(13) = -0.4886, p = 0.0646). For the combined data, median (IQR) D3 levels were 23.2 ng/mL (17.4–26.8), and a significant Pearson correlation was observed (r(32) = -0.3989, p = 0.0194). Regression suggested a theoretical point of zero mortality at approximately 50 ng/mL D3. Conclusions: The datasets provide strong evidence that low D3 is a predictor rather than just a side effect of the infection. Despite ongoing vaccinations, we recommend raising serum 25(OH)D levels to above 50 ng/mL to prevent or mitigate new outbreaks due to escape mutations or decreasing antibody activity.

Radical leftist Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs was the Democratic frontrunner for Arizona Governor, but things are starting to change after her recent court loss.

ABC 15 reports:

Hobbs had 42% of the vote and her closest rival, Marco Lopez, has 8% of the vote. But Hobbs’ good fortune began to change earlier this month after a federal jury awarded Taloyna Adams, a Democratic policy advisor for the state senate, $2.75 million.

It was the second time a federal jury agreed Adams was the victim of racial and gender discrimination.

The jury also found she was retaliated against because she questioned why she was earning less than others who did the same work.

Hobbs, who was the Senate Minority Leader at the time, testified in court saying Adams was fired for performance-related issues.

“With the verdicts finding her culpable for race and sex discrimination and retaliatory termination, for her to say these other things is dishonest,” Adams said

“This was Katie Hobbs’ decision,” Talonya Adams said in an interview. “I think she’s always been very uncomfortable with minorities. She seems wholly disconnected from people of color.”

Hobbs, who was subpoenaed to testify in the trial, said at the conclusion of her testimony last week that she wished she had been a “better ally” for Adams.

“I don’t need her to be my ally,” Adams said in the interview. “I need her not to discriminate against black people.

Hobbs certified the corrupt results in Arizona in the 2020 Election and is a Soros-related Secretary of State. She must think she can count on a fraudulent election process to give her the governor’s race in Arizona.

Return of Mandatory Masks: Boris Johnson Announces ‘Tighter Rules’ in Response to Omicron Variant

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has reintroduced mandatory masks for shops and public transport in response to the discovery of a new COVID-19 variant, despite the requirements only being lifted in July.

On Wednesday, a new strain of coronavirus — B.1.1.529, dubbed ‘Omicron’ — was identified in southern Africa, prompting the United Kingdom on Friday to impose travel restrictions on those coming from several southern African countries and requiring arrivals to quarantine in hotels for ten days.

On Saturday, two cases on the Omicron variant were detected in the UK, in Essex in the southeast of England and in Nottinghamshire in central England. Health Secretary Sajid Javid said the cases were linked to recent travel from southern Africa. Mr Javid had said yesterday that the Omicron strain “may be more transmissible” than the dominant delta variety, and there remained the possibility “the vaccines that we currently have may be less effective” against it.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson held an impromptu press conference on Saturday at 5 pm, during which he used rather unclear language to announce a “tightening up” of the rules on mask-wearing in shops and on public transport — rules that were lifted in July, leaving unclear what there is to “tighten up”.

Mr Johnson told the press during his speech: “We will also be asking all of you to help contain the spread of this variant by tightening up the rules on face coverings in shops and on public transport.”

Likely communicating a confusion expressed by many hearing such an unclear statement, Sky News’s Nick Martin asked Johnson: “Can you just be a bit clearer about what you said about face coverings? You said it would be necessary to ‘tighten up’ on them. Are you tonight saying you’re going to make face coverings mandatory in whatever indoor spaces?”

The prime minister was forced to confirm that yes, this meant the return of mandatory masks, saying: “On face coverings, what we’re looking at is retail and transport just going back to where you have to wear them in retail settings or on public transport.

“But the health secretary, Saj, will be setting out more in the course of the next day or so.”

The measures, Prime Minister Johnson said, are “temporary and precautionary”.

UN health agency fears variants of concern could outnumber the 24 letters of the Greek alphabet, Maria Van Kerkhove tells the Telegraph

New coronavirus variants could be named after star constellations once letters of the Greek alphabet are exhausted, a senior World Health Organization official has suggested.

In an interview with the Telegraph Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO’s technical chief for Covid-19, said the UN health agency was already looking at new names for mutations amid fears there will be more concerning variants than the 24 letters of the Greek alphabet.

That system was introduced in late May and so far 11 mutations have been named: four variants of concern, including delta and beta; four variants of interest, such as eta and lambda; plus epsilon, zeta and theta, thought to be “of interest” but since downgraded.

But as the coronavirus continues to mutate, it is possible there will be more key strains than available letters.

Dr Van Kerkhove said star constellations are the current frontrunner to follow the Greek alphabet, suggesting we could one day see variants known as Aries, Gemini or Orion.

Several alternatives have already been dismissed, including Greek gods and goddesses – partly due to concerns about pronunciation.

“We will possibly run out of the Greek alphabet, but we’re already looking at the next series of names,” said Dr Van Kerkhove, who first requested a colloquial naming system last year to prevent variants being linked to places – a practice deemed discriminatory by the WHO.

“We’re actually considering star constellations,” she added. “We were going to go with Greek gods or goddesses, and I said please, please don’t make me say that publicly.”

The next choice – which won’t affect the scientific names of Sars-Cov-2 variants – could be announced “relatively quickly”. Currently the virus evolution working group and the WHO’s legal team are double checking proposals to “make sure we don't upset anyone with these names”, Dr Van Kerkhove said.

It comes as efforts to track new variants are ramped up across the globe, amid concerns that a mutation could emerge which evades existing vaccines.

“It’s a real threat,” said Dr Van Kerkhove. “It’s certainly possible that you could have mutations that will evade our countermeasures… and that’s why it’s so critical that we just don’t rely only on vaccines, that we do everything we can to really drive transmission down.”

Speaking from the WHO’s headquarters in Geneva after her first holiday since the coronavirus emerged 19 months ago, the epidemiologist added that a dangerous new variant is more likely to emerge in three instances.

In areas with intense transmission rates; in animal populations, for instance in mink farms; and in places with high vaccination rates where the virus is still circulating widely.

Yet gaping “blind spots” in the global surveillance network remain, with much of the world still relying on patchy testing and limited sequencing capacity – especially in Africa and parts of South America, Dr Van Kerkhove said, pointing to a map hanging in her office.

Australian government to introduce social media legislation to unmask online trolls

The Australian government will introduce new "anti-troll" social media legislation that is designed to hold social media services such as Facebook and Instagram liable for hurtful comments published on their platforms.

The legislation will define social media services as the publisher of the comments, allowing them to be the target of a defamation claim in an Australian court.

If a claim goes to court, a social media platform will also be required to "unmask" a troll by providing an email address, a mobile phone number or relevant personal detail.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said an important part of free speech in Australia was being held responsible for what a person says.

"In a free society such as Australia where we value our free speech, it is only free when that is balanced with the responsibility for what you say," Mr Morrison said.

"Free speech is not being allowed to cowardly hide in your basement and sledge and slur and harass people anonymously and seek to destroy their lives."

The Prime Minister said the bill will go out for consultation and he expects to receive strong support from the Parliament.

"The online world should not be a wild west where bots and bigots and trolls and others are anonymously going around and can harm people and hurt people, harass them and bully them and sledge them," Mr Morrison said.

"That is not Australia.

"That is not what can happen in the real world, and there is no case for it to be able to be happening in the digital world."

27.11.2021 — The Syrians, Lebanese, and Egyptian migrants had planned to reach Germany after being dropped off in Austria, police said. Hundreds of migrants paid up to €5,000 each ($5,600) for the ride.

Austrian police have arrested 15 people accused of being part of a criminal group that made €2.5 million ($2.8 million) for smuggling 700 migrants into the country.

The group allegedly drove the migrants from the Serbian-Hungarian border to the north of Vienna from where they could travel onward to Germany.

How were the smugglers discovered?

Austrian authorities first opened an investigation into the criminal network last month.

Police said they arrested the 15 smugglers on November 16 when 25 vehicles carrying 200 to 300 migrants were intercepted in vehicle checks in Lower Austria and at a Vienna hotel. Police seized 14 vehicles in the operation.

Drivers were recruited in Moldova, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan through social media ads offering up to €3,000 (about $4,000) in monthly wages. The drivers were all said to have tried to escape upon capture.
