Here's a data point to consider.

Text messages from Tony Bobulinski identified a guy namedJames Gilliaras being involved in the Sinohawk/China dealings that Hunter was involved with.

Per a request from Garrett Ziegler on TG last night, people were asked to track down a photo of the guy.

ZERO success.

Inquiries into his background were very scrubbed; very little on the internet except his involvement with J2CR.com, an LLC he owns.

Formed in London, with the (now closed?) main office in Washington DC. Also offices in Berlin, Prague and Dubai.

A fren informed me that Gilliar is an advisor to a trust of one of the al-Nahyan kids, the ruling family of the UAE Emir and Sheiks.

For those who may not recall, the al-Nahyans have a lot of megayachts which are notoriously hard to track. Their shit shows up as very seldom updated in either vesselfinder or marinetraffic. When they do actually update, the information is old and usually inaccurate.

As in, "someone is protecting these guys" inaccurate. Other megayachts are not nearly so elusive as these guys.

As for pics, the super-elite love to be photo'd, with the ever present, "Oh fuck, I'm important and glamorous" trappings. This guy? Not so much.

Gilliar's wife is a no-shit "Madame", Erika Gilliar. She's a ritzy racehorse owner/breeder. She runs horses all over the world. Mostly Europe.

Moving horseflesh is expensive. It also requires drugs. It's usually done by private vessels or aircraft. Shit ain't cheap, ya know?

Anyway, James' slut daughter Imogen has a thing for posting pictures of her nearly nude body on IG. Someone tracked down and ID'd mama Erika with pics, as well as the rest of this guy's fam. No such luck on the dude himself, but there was one pic on Ziegler's TG feed that showed a guy decked out in '20's gangster garb in front of an old car, holding a Tommy gun.

Imogen referred to him as "the big man."

Their lifestyle did not look cut-rate. Even A-listers occasionally have pics that look like ordinary living. This fam? Not so much. Who goes out to eat and has a screen put up around your table for privacy? That's in one of the IG pics.

Makes an anon wonder whether this guy is more than just a bit player. And it makes an anon wonder whether "10% for the big guy" might have referred to this cat instead of Joey Sniffs.

As reported earlier by Alicia Powe — Without warning, Facebook crashed on Monday morning.

It’s unclear what caused today’s global outage which saw Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram all crash.

The Daily Mail reported:

Facebook’s Chief Technology Officer offered his ‘sincere apologies’ on Monday afternoon as a global outage of the website along with Instagram and WhatsApp stretched into its fifth hour, costing the company $50billion and CEO Mark Zuckerberg $7billion and counting.

The cause of the outage is believed to have been changes made to Facebook’s systems at 11.50am EST.

It is believed they were caused in error and were not a cyber attack, but Facebook is yet to confirm the cause of the outage.

It sparked global outages that are detrimental to online businesses and decimate the company’s ad-wielding power.

At 3.50pm, four hours after the outage began, CTO Mike Schroepfer tweeted: ‘*Sincere* apologies to everyone impacted by outages of Facebook powered services right now. We are experiencing networking issues and teams are working as fast as possible to debug and restore as fast as possible.’

German Electricity Producer Forced to Shut Down Power Plant After Running out of Coal

The global energy crisis forced one German electricity producer to shut down its power plant last week after it ran out of hard coal.

Steag GmbH, which operates six large-scale hard coal plants in Germany, was forced to close its Bergkamen A plant located in the western part of the country due to shortages, a Steag spokesperson told Bloomberg.

This is not the first time the Bergkamen A plant has been forced to halt. According to court filings, the plant was put on pause four times in September for as many as six days at a time due to external factors, according to Bloomberg. Three other German coal plants were also halted on Friday for maintenance.

“We are short of hard coal,” said spokesman Daniel Muhlenfeld. “There is a strong demand for coal per se and secondly, there is a strong demand for transport by barge. And since Bergkamen has no rail connection, there are no logistical alternatives available here.”

Steag, which employs more than 6,000 people around the world, is also facing logistical issues amid a surge in demand for river transport as Germany’s economy slowly recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite the logistical issues, the company is still optimistic that its Bergkamen A plant will be up and running again “quite soon,” and noted that Steag is not the only energy company facing such issues.

“We are dealing with a double bottleneck,” Muhlenfeld said. “This is not a specific problem for Steag but a common problem for nearly all owners of hard coal-based power plants these days.”

Surging energy places are currently playing out across the globe, with several European countries facing soaring energy bills as gas prices have risen more than 35 percent in the past month amid lower supplies of natural gas and a surge in demand as pandemic-hit economies around the world reopen.

Lackluster output from Europe’s windmills and solar farms, and maintenance work taking nuclear generators and other plans offline have also contributed.

In Europe, supply levels are 16 percent below the five-year average, a record low for this time of year, and European utilities have turned to coal to combat such shortages, even asking Russia for more supplies. As a consequence, coal is now trading at sky-high levels.

Meanwhile, China, which is almost totally reliant on coal, last week moved to secure more supplies—including electricity and oil—as the country faces electricity supply issues that have forced factories to shut down and caused supply disruptions to large global companies such as Apple and Tesla, as well as small U.S. businesses.

Looks like this 'whistleblower' is doing less whistling and more blowing.

Facebook “whistleblower” Frances Haugen is a longtime Democrat donor, supporting campaigns for far-left extremists such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She has also donated money to activist groups actively attempting to derail the U.S. primary process that allows ordinary members of the public to beat out establishment, career politicians, The National Pulse can reveal.

Blowing the Establishment.

Haugen’s “whistleblowing” has been lauded by the corporate media: a sure sign that rather than being a sole actor attempting to call out corporate abuse, she is likely backed by some hefty interests. Haugen first anonymously leaked internal documents before revealing her identity and calling for mass censorship on the Facebook, but only of political ideas she opposes.

The National Pulse has thus far identified 36 donations from Haugen during her time as an employee of Facebook, Pinterest, and Gigster. All of the donations, which total nearly $2,000 since December 2016, have gone to Democrats including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

On January 13th, 2020, Haugen sent money to Ocasio-Cortez’s congressional campaign and a further contribution to her “Courage to Change” Political Action Committee (PAC).

“All endorsees will embody the ideals of racial, social, economic, and environmental justice,” promises the PAC.

Haugen’s most recent donation was August 4th, sending $100 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC).

In-keeping with her wishes to purge political views other than hers from social media, Haugen has also donated to a left-wing “resistance” group which lists as one of its top priorities the dismantling of the U.S. primary process for elections.

America is somewhat unique on the world stage in its commitment to a decentralized process whereby ordinary citizens can become political party candidates. It is perhaps the most democratic part of U.S. elections.

But, in the words of the Haugen-backed “It Starts Today” campaign, “the modern partisan primary—particularly within the GOP—has turned out to have an unintended consequence: extremism in our elected officials and dysfunction in our legislatures.”

America First Congressional candidate Joe Kent (R-WA) is calling for the United States Marine Corp to “immediately” release Lt. Colonel Stu Scheller from his “unjust imprisonment” after the Marine was incarcerated for criticizing the Biden Regime’s disastrous Afghanistan withdrawal.

Joe Kent, an America First Republican running for Congress in Washington against RINO Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, is calling for the immediate release of Lt. Col. Stu Scheller, the Marine who was jailed after posting a series of viral videos in which he criticized the Biden Regime’s disastrous Afghanistan withdrawal and called for real accountability from military leadership.

In a press release, Kent said:

Rather than let Lt. Col. Scheller leave the military with honor, he has been imprisoned. Lt. Col. Scheller’s parents have made recent appearances on television calling for their sons release from imprisonment. Members of Congress, including Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) have also joined in calls for his release. In a letter issued on September 29, several lawmakers issued calls for his release from pretrial confinement.

Brandon Hall, the controversial west Michigan blogger who served as a key figure in the Donald Trump campaign’s organizing efforts across the state, was found guilty today on 10 felony counts of election fraud.

In Ottawa County Circuit Court, a jury took less than an hour to find Hall guilty of forging signatures on nominating petitions for a circuit judge candidate who was a Hall political ally. In 2012, Hall, now 27, admitted to signing fake signatures on the petition of Chris Houghtaling as they traveled to the state capital of Lansing to beat the candidate filing deadline. Hall used different pens and both hands to make the signatures look distinct.

Though he hopes to appeal the verdict, Hall now faces up to five years in prison when he is sentenced on Dec. 27.

While Hall was not a part of the national Trump campaign apparatus, he emerged early in the primary election season as an ardent supporter of the New York billionaire and later played an arduous role as a leader of the Trump camp’s grassroots efforts in the state.

Hall and a group of young GOP activists emerged as the team that would provide field work and organizing efforts. The state communications director for Trump praises Hall’s campaign role in a post-election commentary on Facebook:

“Beyond just helping me, he wore about 10 different hats for the campaign and came through for everyone time and time again, even when he knew he would not be receiving the credit,” said Tim Lineberger. “I am proud to call Brandon one of my best friends and look forward to seeing what he does next. No doubt it will be HUGE!”

Lepow died Monday after battling leukemia for more than two years.

President Barack Obama mourned the death of Brandon Lepow, 32, a former White House staffer who died Monday after battling leukemia.

Lepow joined Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign as a volunteer before serving in the White House, where he worked on the president’s advance and communications teams. He later left the administration to work at Facebook as a policy communications manager.

“Seven years ago, like a lot of young people, Brandon Lepow got into politics because he believed he could change his country for the better,” Obama wrote in a statement released Tuesday. “In his time on the campaign trail and in the White House... he was tireless in that effort — hardworking, cheerful, one of the most unfailingly kind and gracious people I’ve had the honor to know.”

He continued, “He was someone that any American could be proud to have working on their behalf.”

Lepow was diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2013 while he was planning his wedding. After 10 months of treatment in Houston, Texas, he went into remission. Lepow relapsed earlier this year, and returned to Houston for further treatment. After receiving a stem cell transplant in April, his immune system began to fail.

In August, more than 50 current and former administration officials gathered in Houston to visit and support Lepow.

‘Bridgerton’ Emmy winner Marc Elliot Pilcher, 53, died of Covid-19 on Sunday two weeks after attending the 73rd Emmy Awards in Los Angeles.

Pilcher was “double vaccinated” and had no underlying conditions.

Shortly after Pilcher returned to the UK, he fell ill and died from Covid.

Only the ‘hired help’ was required to mask up last month at the Emmys.

LA health officials said the celebrities didn’t violate the county’s mask mandate because there are special exceptions for Hollywood degenerates.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health said the maskless Emmys were not in violation of the county’s mask mandate because “exceptions are made for film, television, and music productions” since “additional safety modifications” are made for such events.

The Facebook whistleblower who revealed herself in a 60 Minutes interview is getting strategic communications guidance from a top Democratic operative, according to a source with direct knowledge of the relationship, which was confirmed by another half-dozen sources with indirect knowledge of the partnership.

Frances Haugen, the former Facebook employee who has for the past 10 months fed internal documents to a top Wall Street Journal reporter, and who revealed her identity in a primetime broadcast on Sunday, is working with the political consultant and former Obama administration deputy press secretary Bill Burton and his consulting firm, Bryson Gillette. It is unclear when Haugen's relationship with Burton and Bryson Gillette began, how big her communications team is, and whether it includes other political operatives.

But Burton is now deeply integrated with an emerging infrastructure on the left comprised of individuals and organizations, including the nonprofit Center for Humane Technology, seeking to press Facebook to more aggressively police political content.

In Haugen's public testimony, industry and political insiders see a sophisticated communications campaign intended to put Facebook on defense, from a steady trickle of leaked internal documents that fueled a Wall Street Journal investigative series dubbed "The Facebook Files" to the blockbuster 60 Minutes interview to congressional testimony scheduled to begin Tuesday. Haugen on Sunday also debuted a slick personal website in part to field media requests.

"It does have the appearance of being an incredibly well-orchestrated communications campaign," said the GOP operative Kevin McLaughlin, the former director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Neither Burton nor Haugen responded to a request for comment, though sources say reporters and Burton himself have been open about the relationship.

Haugen's 60 Minutes interview kicked off a media feeding frenzy, with the story mentioned at least 200 times on cable news since the segment aired, according to a review conducted by the Washington Free Beacon.

Since 2016, both political parties have gone after Big Tech companies like Facebook, with the left charging that the company's failure to adequately police "disinformation," helped tip the election to Donald Trump and the right charging that it arbitrarily silences conservative voices.

Burton's involvement helping to manage Haugen's public debut suggests that her argument is part of a broader Democratic initiative. A Facebook employee in the company's now-defunct "civic integrity" division until May, Haugen is calling for the federal government to intervene against the company. Though she did not specify in the Sunday interview what sorts of regulations she might support, she is likely to be pressed on that when she appears on Capitol Hill on Tuesday.

Sources: Former Obama administration communications guru Bill Burton and his company Bryson Gillette are working the high-profile campaign

The Facebook whistleblower who revealed herself in a 60 Minutes interview is getting strategic communications guidance from a top Democratic operative, according to a source with direct knowledge of the relationship, which was confirmed by another half-dozen sources with indirect knowledge of the partnership.

Frances Haugen, the former Facebook employee who has for the past 10 months fed internal documents to a top Wall Street Journal reporter, and who revealed her identity in a primetime broadcast on Sunday, is working with the political consultant and former Obama administration deputy press secretary Bill Burton and his consulting firm, Bryson Gillette. It is unclear when Haugen's relationship with Burton and Bryson Gillette began, how big her communications team is, and whether it includes other political operatives.

But Burton is now deeply integrated with an emerging infrastructure on the left comprised of individuals and organizations, including the nonprofit Center for Humane Technology, seeking to press Facebook to more aggressively police political content.

In Haugen's public testimony, industry and political insiders see a sophisticated communications campaign intended to put Facebook on defense, from a steady trickle of leaked internal documents that fueled a Wall Street Journal investigative series dubbed "The Facebook Files" to the blockbuster 60 Minutes interview to congressional testimony scheduled to begin Tuesday. Haugen on Sunday also debuted a slick personal website in part to field media requests.

"It does have the appearance of being an incredibly well-orchestrated communications campaign," said the GOP operative Kevin McLaughlin, the former director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Neither Burton nor Haugen responded to a request for comment, though sources say reporters and Burton himself have been open about the relationship.

Haugen's 60 Minutes interview kicked off a media feeding frenzy, with the story mentioned at least 200 times on cable news since the segment aired, according to a review conducted by the Washington Free Beacon.

Since 2016, both political parties have gone after Big Tech companies like Facebook, with the left charging that the company's failure to adequately police "disinformation," helped tip the election to Donald Trump and the right charging that it arbitrarily silences conservative voices.

A bit more information has emerged from the John Durham investigation into Russiagate (or “Spygate,”as it is known hereabouts).

This is due to what is likely a leak from one or more of the targets to their loyal propagandists at CNN. (In the article, the reporters do their best to downgrade the scandal they fanned for years as no more than a trivial “dirty trick” that all campaigns do. There’s a well-known word for that adapted into the English language.)

The import of these leaks is usually to soften the impact on the target(s), but it also gives us another indication Durham is still active.

In this instance, more subpoenas have been issued, including some to Perkins Coie. That’s the Democratic National Committee’s and Hillary Clinton’s law firm that only a few weeks ago defenestrated—for reasons unspecified, but we can guess— one of Hillary’s principal lawyers, Mark Elias.

The other Clinton campaign lawyer, Michael Sussman, has already been charged with lying to the FBI on the matter of alleged Trump links to the Russian Alpha Bank, ties that turned out to be non-existent.

This time, however, we learned that “Tech Executive-1” in the Sussman indictment is Rodney Joffe, a rather distinguished cybersecurity expert, but not in this case because he was apparently involved with the same attempted deception.

Mr. Joffe was evidently no fan of Donald Trump. How far he took his enmity we shall see as this plays out.

Or we won’t. Therein lies the problem. Many are worried that Durham will only take the investigation so far and then peter out.

A real Russiagate investigation has myriad possible targets with very famous names, some of the most famous, in fact. Yet negativism about the results is everywhere in conservative circles with some justification.

When then AG William Barr gave Durham his brief, he was quoted in The Hill (March 2020) as follows:

“Attorney General William Barr said Monday that he does not expect a criminal investigation of former President Obama or former Vice President Joe Biden to result from the probe undertaken by U.S. Attorney John Durham.

“Based on the information I have today, I don’t expect Mr. Durham’s work will lead to a criminal investigation of either man,” Barr told reporters at the Justice Department. ‘Our concern over potential criminality is focused on others.’”

In what looks to be yet another serious obstacle in the way of the prospect of jump starting Iran nuclear negotiations with world powers in Vienna, which have been stalled since June, and prior to Ebrahim Raisi taking office, Iran is asking the Biden administration to immediately unfreeze some $10 in Iranian assets.

Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian called it a necessary "sign of good will" to show that the American side is "serious" about returning to the Vienna process.

"The Americans tried to contact us through different channels (at the U.N. General Assembly) in New York, and I told the mediators if America's intentions are serious then a serious indication was needed ... by releasing at least $10 billion of blocked money," the Iranian foreign minister said in a weekend interview.

Billions in its foreign-held assets have been effectively blocked for a couple years since Trump-era sanctions targeting the Islamic Republic's international assets took effect. Amir-Abdollahian argued in his comments that at least "once" the US has to show its ready to consider "the interests of the Iranian nation."

"They are not willing to free $10 billion belonging to the Iranian nation so that we can say that the Americans once in the past several decades considered the interests of the Iranian nation," he explained.

Earlier last month the FM had vowed that Iran is ready to return to the negotiating table "very soon" but said the recently installed Raisi government is still "reviewing" the negotiation files.

So far the US State Department has kept mum on the Iran FM's weekend plea to unfreeze assets. It's not likely to happen given Biden is already facing pressure from Republicans and would be accused of "caving" to the mullahs in Tehran if he were to unfreeze the requested billions.

It's also unlikely that Washington would allow the Iranians to set what appear as belated pre-conditions for deeper talks, giving possible leverage to move the goal posts further.

Aussie flags were flying in New York City overnight where demonstrators chanted “Save Australia” in an anti vaccine mandate march.

Australia became the surprising focal point of an American anti vaccine mandate protest march for teachers in New York City overnight, with hundreds of demonstrators chanting “Save Australia” and some waving Aussie flags.

The large crowd gathered outside the Australian consulate in the city for speeches in support of Australia after they marched through Manhattan.

The march began in Brooklyn outside Department of Education headquarters earlier in the day, as hundreds of people gathered to hear speeches. It mobilised and moved across the Brooklyn Bridge and into Manhattan, with chants of “Wake up, New York,” “Let us teach,” and “We, the people, will not comply.”

Some members of the crowd flipped over a Covid-19 testing site tent on their way through the city, with many of them booing and chanting, “Shame on you!”

One man, recording on his phone, overturned the testing site’s table. Another then pulled down the tent, before police officers intervened.

The march ended outside the Australian consulate in Midtown, where speeches were held in support of Australia.

Tom Cotton Sounds Alarm on ‘Unknown Afghans’ Fleeing U.S. Military Bases

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) says it is “alarming” that hundreds of seemingly “unknown Afghans” brought to the United States by President Joe Biden’s administration are prematurely fleeing U.S. military bases.

Last week, Reuters reported that at least 700 Afghans had fled U.S. bases in Wisconsin, Virginia, Texas, Indiana, New Mexico, and New Jersey for American communities before having been resettled by refugee contractors.

At Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, alone, the report stated that more than 300 Afghans had left since they started arriving weeks ago as part of Biden’s massive operation that plans to bring at least 95,000 Afghans to the U.S. for resettlement in 46 states.

In a letter to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Cotton asked for information on the Afghans leaving U.S. bases. — including their immigration statuses and if they received approval from DHS to leave.

“A more extensive review and vetting process is absolutely essential for the tens of thousands of unknown Afghans who were airlifted during the evacuation,” Cotton writes:

The U.S. government is currently investigating multiple crimes committed in evacuee facilities. The American people have seen reports of a group of male Afghan evacuees assaulting a female servicemember at a Fort Bliss facility in New Mexico. [Emphasis added]

An Afghan evacuee allegedly sexually assaulted young boys at Fort McCoy in Wisconsin. Another Afghan evacuee reportedly choked his wife at Fort McCoy. The State Department has raised concerns about child trafficking by older Afghan men. Even previously-deported criminals — including an Afghan who had previously been convicted of rape in the United States, and another who had previously been convicted of aggravated robbery — were airlifted back to the United States. [Emphasis added]

In light of these reports, it is alarming that hundreds of Afghan evacuees have reportedly left U.S. military bases directly into our communities, possibly before completing our vetting and immigration processes. [Emphasis added]

Cotton is requesting DHS to respond to his questions by October 8, though the Biden administration has repeatedly refused to make public information about Afghans brought to the U.S.

Last week, Reps. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) and Tom Tiffany (R-WI) asked Biden to provide them with details about the number of Afghans who have been accused of crimes while temporarily living on U.S. bases and how many Afghans have criminal records.

After the 2020 election, a number of critiques of Hunter Biden made the claim that the company in which he had a 10% investment - Bohai Harvest - was part-owner of Dominion Voting Systems.

This was not true - at least, not technically. Bohai was "strategic partners" with COFCO, a CCP-controlled company that did have 10% ownership of UBS-Securities LTD (Beijing) PRIOR to Dec 1, 2018. But after that date, the 14% was sold to UBS AG, a Swiss Bank.

UBS-Sec LTD (Beijing) was NOT the company involved in a $400mil deal on 10-8-2020. Instead, it was UBS-Sec LLC (NYC). Both are subsidiaries of UBS AG (Switzerland).

BUT:

The possibility of influence-peddling still exists.

WHY?

Because the two UBS subsidiaries are VERY chummy, despite efforts since the 2020 election (specifically, right before Lin Wood's Dec 2020 tweets) to ERASE previous connections between them.

There is a definite possibility that there are many INFORMAL ties between COFCO, Bohai Harvest, UBS-Sec LTD (Beijing) and UBS-Sec LLC.

The U.S. government is secretly ordering Google to provide data on anyone typing in certain search terms, an accidentally unsealed court document shows. There are fears such “keyword warrants” threaten to implicate innocent Web users in serious crimes and are more common than previously thought.

In 2019, federal investigators in Wisconsin were hunting men they believed had participated in the trafficking and sexual abuse of a minor. She had gone missing that year but had emerged claiming to have been kidnapped and sexually assaulted, according to a search warrant reviewed by Forbes. In an attempt to chase down the perpetrators, investigators turned to Google, asking the tech giant to provide information on anyone who had searched for the victim’s name, two spellings of her mother’s name and her address over 16 days across the year. After being asked to provide all relevant Google accounts and IP addresses of those who made the searches, Google responded with data in mid-2020, though the court documents do not reveal how many users had their data sent to the government.

The entire global financial system depends on GPS, and it’s shockingly vulnerable to attack

There is an enormous, invisible clock that keeps ultra-precise time, can be checked from anywhere on earth, and is free for everyone to use. This technological gift to humanity was built by the US government. It is called the Global Positioning System (GPS), it lives in space, and you use it every time you check the map on your phone.

What you may not know is that you rely on it far more often than that. Cell towers use it to route your phone calls, ATMs and cash registers use it for your transactions, electrical grids use it to send power to your house, and stock exchanges use it to regulate the trades that go into your stock portfolio or investment fund. And it is far more vulnerable to attack and disruption than most people know or are willing to admit.

“When we talk about economic infrastructure, I don’t think the general public realizes the extent to which the Global Positioning System’s timing signal is critical for these ATM transactions and every other point-of-sale transaction conducted in the United States and throughout most of the world,” Michael Griffin, a former NASA administrator, told US space policymakers in early October. “To what extent do we believe that we have defended ourselves if an adversary can bring our economic system near collapse?”

Time, as it turns out, is money, in a very literal sense. Since digital money moves faster than humans can think, banks and regulators alike rely on time stamps to monitor transactions, catch fraud, and make sure the right people get paid. When you pull cash from an ATM or swipe your card at the coffee shop, the machine needs to determine the precise time that the transaction occurs to, for example, prevent it from being over-drawn.

Putting a little clock in the credit-card machines wouldn’t work, because over time, even the most precise clocks start to differ from one another. That doesn’t matter when you’re meeting me for lunch at noon, but if you’re timing transactions down to the microsecond standard now used in many electronic networks, tiny differences can screw up your whole operation.

What makes the Global Positioning System so crucial, then, isn’t in fact the “positioning” part; it’s the ability to make machines all over the planet agree on exactly what time it is...

The New York Stock Exchange relies on a set of GNSS antennae on the roof of its New Jersey server farm to time financial transactions, including those performed automatically by computers. Investors have spent millions improving their algorithms and communications systems to execute trades a few microseconds faster than their competitors, but all that would be for nought if they couldn’t agree on precisely what time each trade happened.

Even the modern electrical grid relies on ultra-precise synchronization to deliver power to high-demand areas at just the right time to prevent a blackouts without causing a dangerous power surge. And all that is before we get into the more obvious uses of GNSS technology to guide transportation of all kinds, from cars and delivery trucks to airplanes and container ships...

“The first thing that happens when GPS is disrupted, every mode of transportation slows down, becomes more dangerous,” Goward tells me. “Then the clocks in the different networks in the affected area begin to desynchronize. Because they are all such a different quality, it’s impossible to say which networks are going to degrade where and in what order, but we know after some period of time, cell phone networks will start to fall apart, IT, financial—stock exchanges will have to shut down because they can’t reconcile the trades, ATMs won’t work because the banks can’t verify the money is there, eventually even the electrical grid. Lord knows how quickly this will unfold.”

Biden Says 'Reckless and Dangerous' Republicans Risking Disastrous Default Amid Debt Ceiling Debate

On Monday, Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) suggested that Republicans would likely support a debt ceiling hike in exchange for Democrats nixing US President Joe Biden's $3.5 trillion reconciliation package. The offer is unlikely to be entertained by Democrats.

Biden told reporters on Monday that he cannot guarantee that the US government will not breach its $28.4 trillion debt limit. The US president claimed Republican support is necessary to raise the debt ceiling before "paying what we already owe" due to the actions of previous administrations.

"So, let’s be clear: Not only are Republicans refusing to do their job, they’re threatening to use the power, their power to prevent us from doing our job - saving the economy from a catastrophic event," the US president said.

"I think, quite frankly, it’s hypocritical, dangerous and disgraceful," he added, noting that Republicans received Democratic support in voting to raise the debt ceiling under the previous administration.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) issued an open letter to the US president on Monday, emphasizing that Biden, "for two and a half months," has been aware of the GOP's conditional position on the debt ceiling.

"[S]ince your party wishes to govern alone, it must handle the debt limit alone as well," the Senate Minority Leader said, signaling that Senate Republicans will not lend any votes toward the debt ceiling hike.

He suggested Democrats had been "sleepwalking toward significant and avoidable danger" over the past several months.

Crossword clues and bullying – the influence of Australia’s pro-Israel lobby unveiled

The intimidating power of Australia’s pro-Israel lobby limits what mainstream media outlets dare publish about Israel and forces self-censorship on editors and journalists alike, writes John Lyons in his latest book Dateline Jerusalem: Journalism’s toughest assignment. Kim Wingerei reports.

In 2019, Fairfax Media’s Sydney and Melbourne mastheads made an error. In the daily crossword section, the answer to the clue “Holy land” turned out not to be six letters starting with an I, as some would expect, but nine letters: Palestine. So affronted was the Australia/Israel and Jewish Affairs Council (AIJAC) that they demanded an investigation.

Fairfax acceded, blamed the error on an external contractor and apologised to Colin Rubenstein, executive director of the AIJAC.

This is just one of many examples which John Lyons uses to illustrate the power of a lobby group so influential it can force changes to Government policy, hound journalists out of their jobs and pressure the ABC board to justify the appointment of foreign correspondents.

John Lyons is an experienced journalist. Currently the head of investigative journalism at the ABC, his 40 years in the media include being editor of the Sydney Morning Herald, Middle East correspondent for The Australian and winning one of his three Walkley Awards for “Stone Cold Justice”, a Four Corner’s episode which exposed the human rights abuses in Israel military courts.

His earlier book Balcony over Jerusalem covered his six years of witnessing the tragedies and contradictions of a region which has suffered more armed conflict than any other since World War II.

In his latest book released this weekend (at 85 pages, it’s closer to essay size), Lyons focuses entirely on the Israel-Palestine conflict and specifically how pro-Israel lobbyists seek to control the narrative for the Australian audience.

He makes the point several times that the press in Israel is far more overtly critical of the policies of Israel’s Government than is the media in Australia, including how the regular flare-ups in the West Bank are covered.

To the AIJAC it’s a war of words. It is a battle to control how and what is said.

For example, Colin Rubenstein and his fellow lobbyists are particularly sensitive about using the word “occupation” in reference to Israel’s occupation of Palestinian Territories. But as the lieutenant colonel responsible for Israel’s army operations in the occupied territories quips:

If this is not occupied then the media has missed one of the biggest stories of our time, (Israel’s) withdrawal from the West Bank!

Mullins’ home in Port Washington was also raided,sources said.

The details of the investigation into the union are unclear, but the raids are part of a long-term investigation, a law enforcement source said.

In a statement, FBI spokesperson Martin Feely confirmed the probe but did not elaborate.

“We are carrying out a law enforcement action in connection with an ongoing investigation. I cannot confirm the details of the investigation,” Feely said in an email to The Post.

According to reports, the home of union President Ed Mullins was also raided by FBI agents.

Mullins, a fierce critic of Mayor Bill de Blasio, drew headlines last year when the SBA tweeted out a confidential, unredacted arrest report for de Blasio’s daughter, Chiara, after she was busted at a George Floyd protest in the city.

“How can the NYPD protect the city of NY from rioting anarchist when the Mayors object throwing daughter is one of them. Now we know why he is forbidding Mounted units to be mobilized and keeping the NYPD from doing their jobs,” read the SBA tweet.

Mullins is facing a trial on internal charges related to the tweet and other social media posts.
