Trump authorizes Pentagon 'to do what we need to do' after deadly attack on US & UK troops in Iraq – Defense Secretary Esper

US President Donald Trump has given the military permission to avenge the deaths of two US troops and a British serviceman in a rocket attack on Camp Taji outside the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, Defense Secretary Mark Esper confirmed.

"I have spoken with the president. He's given me the authority to do what we need to do, consistent with his guidance. And, you know – if that becomes the case," Esper told journalists.

He refused to disclose any details of a possible military response, only saying that he was "not going to take any option off the table right now," and that the Pentagon was "focused" on the Iraq-based military groups that could be responsible for the attack.

A high-ranked US general earlier insisted that the Pentagon knew with a "high degree of certainty" who the perpetrators of the rocket strike were.

Turkish translator at US Consulate faces up to 15 years in prison

A Turkish employee at the US Consulate in Istanbul should be acquitted on charges of espionage and trying to overthrow the government, but should still face a prison sentence on a lesser charge of belonging to a terrorist organisation, a prosecutor said on Tuesday.

According to a report by Hurriyet, Metin Topuz, a translator for the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) at the consulate, was arrested in 2017 following the 2016 failed coup attempt blamed on the movement headed by Fethullah Gülen. The cleric lives in self-imposed exile in the US.

The prosecutor said that the recent contact made by Topuz with members of the Gülen network showed that he was a member of the group. He asked for Topuz to be spared the life sentence on the more serious charges, but still to be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison on the lesser charge. The Gülen Movement was designated as a terrorist organisation by the Turkish government following the coup attempt.

The defendant claimed that he has not been identified clearly with the Gülenist members. Nevertheless, the court rejected a request by his defence lawyers for Topuz to be released, and postponed the trial until 11 June.

Mike Pence: There Will Be ‘Thousands’ More Coronavirus Cases

The nation should expect “thousands” more cases of the coronavirus before the disease blows over, Vice President Mike Pence said on the TODAY Show Thursday.

Pence’s statement comes after President Donald Trump gave an Oval Office address on the federal response to COVID-19, announcing near-total bans on travel from Europe as well as financial relief for impacted workers. Pence’s statement is the first time the coronavirus task force has given a numerical estimate for expected cases, previously telling Americans to simply “expect more cases.”

Pence also criticized those who have sad Trump isn’t taking the virus seriously enough. The criticism arose when various media outlets falsely claimed the president called the coronavirus a “hoax” at a campaign rally. Trump later threw fuel on the fire by comparing the virus to the seasonal flu.

Trump has also faced criticism from his conservative allies, some of whom say his chaotic messaging is making it harder for his coronavirus task force to do its job.

President Trump offered a lifeline to the United Kingdom by exempting it from an anti-coronavirus ban on travel from Europe, but Boris Johnson’s government has thrown it back in his face, claiming the restrictions won’t work and complaining about their economic impact.

“The advice we are getting is that there isn’t evidence that interventions like closing borders or travel bans are going to have a material effect on the spread of the infection,” complained Rishi Sunak, Boris Johnson’s Chancellor of the Exchequer.

“That is why we have taken the decisions we have,” he said in comments to the Today programme on BBC Radio 4 reported by The Times.

British government ministers have, as yet, taken little direct action on the pandemic besides advise people to wash their hands for as long as it takes to sing the first two verses of God Save the Queen, several times a day.

Discussing the U.S.-Europe travel ban in more detail, Sunak claimed the Trump administration is “still deciding the details of what exactly [the policy] means.”

He made it clear that the Johnson administration is concerned by the economic impact of the coronavirus and measures to mitigate it, telling the BBC: “As I talked about yesterday [when presenting the budget], there will be an impact on the demand side of our economy as people are unable to spend in the way they normally would and travel, but it also affects the supply chains for businesses and that impacts the supply side of our economy.”

While several European nations are actually exempt from the travel ban — it only applies to members of the European Union’s internal tree travel zone, which includes several of the worst impacted nations worldwide — President Trump namechecked only the United Kingdom during his address, a clear signal of interest in the nation.

The clash between Trump’s support for Britain and the UK government’s pessimism is perhaps unsurprising, as while Prime Minister Johnson is often seen as something of a “British Trump” there are in fact many differences between the two.

For example, Johnson is a committed market-first free trader, where Trump has sought to bring jobs back to America; Johnson is an enthusiast for working with the Chinese Community Party — a stance which already caused ructions with the U.S. and other allies after it saw him agree to involve China in British 5G infrastructure — where Trump sees the regime as a global threat; and Johnson is a supporter of illegal migrant amnesties, where Trump has border control as a key plank in his platform.

While many politicians from countries failing to ban travel from countries infested with the coronavirus have, like Sunak, claimed they would make no difference, they seldom offer any explanation as to how they could not slow its spread.

Mongolia, for example, closed its border with China in late January and restricted travel from Japan and South Korea shortly thereafter.

It did not report its first coronavirus case until March 10th — which arrived via a French worker — buying it significantly more time than countries like Britain and Italy, where it is now endemic.

Statement Regarding Treasury Reserve Management Purchases and Repurchase Operations

March 12, 2020

The Open Market Trading Desk (the Desk) at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York has released a new monthly schedule of Treasury securities operations and has updated the current monthly schedule of repurchase agreement (repo) operations. Pursuant to instruction from the Chair in consultation with the FOMC, adjustments have been made to these schedules to address temporary disruptions in Treasury financing markets. The Treasury securities operation schedule includes a change in the maturity composition of purchases to support functioning in the market for U.S. Treasury securities. Term repo operations in large size have been added to enhance functioning of secured U.S. dollar funding markets.

As a part of its $60 billion reserve management purchases for the monthly period beginning March 13, 2020 and continuing through April 13, 2020, the Desk will conduct purchases across a range of maturities to roughly match the maturity composition of Treasury securities outstanding. Specifically, the Desk plans to distribute reserve management purchases across eleven sectors, including nominal coupons, bills, Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities, and Floating Rate Notes. The distribution of purchases across sectors will be the same distribution as the Desk uses to reinvest principal payments from the Federal Reserve’s holdings of agency debt and agency MBS in Treasury securities. The first such purchases will begin tomorrow, March 13, 2020.

Today, March 12, 2020, the Desk will offer $500 billion in a three-month repo operation at 1:30 pm ET that will settle on March 13, 2020. Tomorrow, the Desk will further offer $500 billion in a three-month repo operation and $500 billion in a one-month repo operation for same day settlement. Three-month and one-month repo operations for $500 billion will be offered on a weekly basis for the remainder of the monthly schedule. The Desk will continue to offer at least $175 billion in daily overnight repo operations and at least $45 billion in two-week term repo operations twice per week over this period.

These changes are being made to address highly unusual disruptions in Treasury financing markets associated with the coronavirus outbreak. Reserve management purchases into the second quarter will continue to be conducted with this maturity allocation. The terms of operations will be adjusted as needed to foster smooth Treasury market functioning and efficient and effective policy implementation.

Camp Pendleton Marine killed, two injured in tactical vehicle accident in United Arab Emirates

A Camp Pendleton-based Marine was killed Tuesday in a one-vehicle accident that injured two fellow Marines deployed in the United Arab Emirates, the Marine Corps said in a statement Wednesday.

Cpl. Eloiza Zavala, 20, originally from Sacramento, was serving as a vehicle operator with Combat Logistics Battalion 13 during the multi-nation, multi-force exercise Native Fury 20. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by first responders, the Marines said.

The accident involved a Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement, commonly called a 7-ton truck, on a road in the United Arab Emirates, the statement said.

Zavala deployed from Logistics Battalion 1, Combat Logistics Regiment 1 at Camp Pendleton.

Two other Marines, both lance corporals, were injured. One sustained serious injuries and was medically evacuated to Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City in Abu Dhabi. The other had non-life threatening injuries and transported to Ruwais Medical Center in Abu Dhabi.

European Bank Stocks Collapse to March 2009 & 1988 Levels

Over the past three weeks, stocks in Europe have plunged by 22.5%, their worst decline since the collapse of Lehman Brothers. The sell-off has been across the board but the worst of it has been reserved for the banking sector, whose shares have been relentlessly crushed and re-crushed for 13 years.

On Monday, the Stoxx 600 Banks index, which covers major European banks, plunged 13%. Today, after a knee-jerk bounce-back that then fizzled, the index closed essentially flat, back where it had been in March 2009. It has collapsed in a nearly straight line by 32% since February 17, when this latest Coronavirus-triggered sell-off began, and by 49% since January 24, 2018:

But it’s even worse: The Stoxx 600 bank index has collapsed by 82% since its peak in May 2007, after having quadrupled over the preceding 12 years. It was the frenzied height of the euro bubble and the sky was supposedly the limit for Europe’s biggest banks. Things got so crazy that for a brief moment in 2008, before it all come tumbling down, the Royal Bank of Scotland, now bailed-out and majority state-owned, was the world’s biggest bank by assets.

Here’s how far the shares of Europe’s largest publicly traded banks by assets fell on Monday (and in parentheses: at today’s close, since February 17):

HSBC (UK): -4.82% (-17%)

BNP Paribas (France): -12% (-33%)

Credit Agricole (France): -16.9% (-42%)

Deutsche Bank (Germany): -13.6% (-38%)

Banco Santander (Spain): -12% (-30%)

Barclays (UK): -9.81% (-32%)

Banco Sabadell’s shares have collapsed to a record low of €0.55, down 50% so far this year. Many in the industry are now saying that it is toast and will probably be merged with Bankia, which itself has lost over 40% of its market cap so far this year, and is still mostly owned by the state, which had created Bankia by lumping a gaggle of failed banks into one big lump during the Spanish financial crisis, and then floated some of its shares in a misbegotten IPO.

Three of the biggest sell-offs over the past three weeks were endured by France’s three largest lenders: BNP Paribas (-33%), Credit Agricole (-42%), and Société Générale (-41%).

These declines in share prices, while impressive for both their speed and size, represent just one more leg down in the relentless sell-off that began in May 2007 and has dragged the Stoxx 600 82% lower, to just below where it was in January 1988.

More than 100 billion people have died since the Homo sapiens lineage first appeared roughly 50,000 years ago. And with so many bodies to bury, civilizations have repeatedly run out of convenient places to put them.

But humans are a resourceful bunch. To make room for new graves, the residents of Ghent, Belgium, apparently dug up some old burial grounds and assembled the bones interred within into nine walls. As Alan Hope reports for the Brussels Times, archaeologists conducting excavations ahead of construction of a cathedral’s new visitor’s center have now unearthed the remnants of these ghastly architectural feats.

Discovered beneath Saint Bavo’s Cathedral, home of the famed Ghent Altarpiece, the newly discovered bone walls probably served a similar purpose to the catacombs of Paris, providing a second home for skeletal remains crowded out of old cemeteries.

So-called ossuaries aren’t uncommon, but typically, these chambers manifest in the form of loose pits filled with bones. The carefully constructed walls represent a first for Belgium, writes Janiek de Gryse, the archaeologist who led the excavation, in an email to Live Science’s Laura Geggel.

De Gryse adds, “We have never seen structures, like walls, which are intentionally built with human bones.”

Composed mostly of adult thigh and shin bones, the walls are also interspersed with partially shattered skulls. Though fully intact skeletons presumably served as the builders’ primary fodder, most small and fragile bones, such as ribs, vertebrae and anything that once belonged to a young child, didn’t make it into the final product—possibly because the builders couldn’t be troubled with collecting them. Also conspicuously absent are arm bones, which, all else equal, should have been sturdy enough to feature in the constructions.

M. a/k/a Mr. Dark, 32, was indicted by a federal grand jury in the District of Columbia for his operation of Dark Scandals, a site on both the Darknet and Clearnet that featured violent rape videos and depictions of child pornography. The nine-count indictment was unsealed today along with a parallel civil forfeiture action. The defendant was charged with various counts of Distribution of Child Pornography, Production and Transportation of Obscene Matters for Sale or Distribution, Engaging in the Business of Selling or Transferring Obscene Matter, and Laundering of Monetary Instruments.

“Darknet sites that profit from rape and the sexual exploitation of children are among the most vile and reprehensible forms of criminal behavior,” said U.S. Attorney Timothy J. Shea. “This Office will not allow predators to use lawless online spaces as a shield. We are firmly committed to working closely with our partners in the Netherlands and around the world to bring to justice the perpetrators of these abhorrent crimes.”

“The types of crimes described in this indictment are the most disgusting I’ve encountered in 30 years of law enforcement. It is a special kind of evil to prey on and profit from the pain of others,” said Don Fort, Chief, IRS Criminal Investigation. “Criminals should know if you leave a digital footprint, we will find you. If you exploit our children, we will put you behind bars. If you thought you were anonymous, think again. The dark web is not quite as dark today due to the hard work of IRS-CI and our partner agencies.”

“The obscene material distributed by the defendant victimizes innocent and vulnerable people in our communities,” said Alysa Erichs, acting executive associate director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations. “We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to investigate and prosecute these crimes, using all available resources to ensure that additional vulnerable victims aren’t exploited.”

House passes key surveillance bill with deadline looming

The House on Wednesday passed legislation to reauthorize a key intelligence surveillance bill after weeks of back-and-forth tussling between members in both parties.

The passage of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), 278-136, comes the day after the House struck a bipartisan deal on the legislation and just before the bill is set to expire on Sunday.

Negotiators had worked for weeks, as both liberal Democrats and libertarian-leaning Republicans pushed for additional privacy protections, putting them at odds with lawmakers who wanted a clean reauthorization of the FISA bill, which they believed would easily pass in the upper chamber.

Now the Senate will consider the bill, which extends three expiring provisions of the USA Freedom Act that touch on roving wiretaps, lone wolf surveillance and a controversial program that allows the U.S. government to request access to phone metadata.

The bill has the support of Attorney General William Barr, who encouraged members of both parties to vote yes on it on Wednesday.

“I have reviewed the House FISA bill and support its passage,” Barr said in a statement. “The bill contains an array of new requirements and compliance provisions that will protect against abuse and misuse in the future while ensuring that this critical tool is available when appropriate to protect the safety of the American people.”

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Jim Jordan (Ohio), the top Republican on the panel, touted the bill Tuesday as a major accomplishment.

“Since we first circulated the original draft of this bill, we have heard from a wide range of stakeholders from the most progressive members of the Democratic caucus to the staunchest supporters of President Trump and they have convinced us to make additional changes to the bill,” Nadler said while presenting the bill before the House Rules Committee on Tuesday evening.

Both Nadler and Jordan described the amended bill as a step in the right direction, noting that there were more privacy protections they would like to make in the future.

“Contrary to a couple of hours ago, I actually agree with the Chairman. I think this bill doesn’t go far enough, but it does represent real reform,” said Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) who spoke Tuesday before the Rules panel, after Nadler.

Jordan and many other Republicans have called for FISA reform after a Justice Department (DOJ) watchdog found 17 “significant errors or omissions” in the surveillance warrant applications for former Trump campaign aide Carter Page, dating back to 2016. DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz has said his investigation did not find evidence to suggest political bias impacted the FBI’s decision to open the counterintelligence probe and concluded that the FBI had an “authorized purpose” for the inquiry.

Jordan dismissed the idea of a clean reauthorization bill, citing the Page wiretap and taking aim at the GOP leaders who supported the idea.

“I am [OK with the deal], but I'm like you, I wanted a lot more. But sometimes you got to step back. And look, what are we going to get with Democrats in control of the House?” asked Jordan during an interview with Ohio conservative talk radio host Bob Frantz on Wednesday.

But some of the fiercest critics of U.S. surveillance powers were not pleased by the text of the bill.

US Congress votes to limit Trump's war powers against Iran

The resolution now goes to President Donald Trump, who has threatened to veto the measure.

Washington, DC - The United States House of Representatives approved on Wednesday a War Powers Resolution aimed at limiting President Donald Trump's ability to wage war against Iran.

The passage of the resolution was yet another rebuke of the president over his decision to order the killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in January amid escalating tensions with Tehran.

The Senate voted 55 to 45 - with eight Republicans joining Democrats on February 13 - to approve the resolution. The House action sends the measure to Trump, who has threatened to veto it. A two-thirds vote in both the House and Senate would be needed to override a veto.

The measure requires that Trump get congressional approval before engaging in further military action against Iran.

"Congress should vote on articles of war before any further hostilities with Iran," Democratic Representative James McGovern said in House floor debate.

Trump ordered the attack that killed Soleimani, the head of Iran's elite Quds Force, at the airport in Baghdad on January 3. Conflict with Iran swiftly escalated into a standoff that many members of the US Congress feared would lead to outright war.

Iran responded to Soleimani's killing with attacks on two Iraqi bases housing US troops. More than 100 US troops were diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries.

"The Constitution gives Congress the authority and responsibility to declare war," said House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, a Democrat.

Under the War Powers Act of 1973, the resolution directs the removal of US forces from hostilities against Iran that have not been authorised by Congress.

Shifting justifications

The resolution "fails to account for present reality," the White House said in a statement on Tuesday.

"It was drafted many weeks ago with the intent of preventing an escalation between the United States and Iran," the White House added.

"Despite the predictions of many people, however, no such escalation occurred," the White House said. "The United States is not currently engaged in any use of force against Iran, in part because of the sound policies and decisive, effective actions of this administration."

Tensions with Iran have escalated since Trump unilaterally pulled the US out of the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran in May 2018. Since then, Trump has exerted a "maximum pressure" campaign against Iran, including economic sanctions, diplomatic isolation and military threats.

"It is that regime that President Trump said so clearly that Iran will never obtain a nuclear weapon while we're on watch," US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told the annual conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee last week.

Anti-war sentiment has been rising in Congress as US troops remain mired in conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria.

Trump has repeatedly said he wants to end "America's wars in the Middle East" and has sought to foster peace talks between the Taliban and the US-backed government in Afghanistan.

The British government is reportedly going to allow the coronavirus "to pass through the entire population" so that they "acquire herd immunity."

The key phrase we all need to understand is “herd immunity” – which is what happens to a group of people or animals when they develop sufficient antibodies to be resistant to a disease.

The strategy of the British government in minimising the impact of Covid-19 is to allow the virus to pass through the entire population so that we acquire herd immunity, but at a much delayed speed so that those who suffer the most acute symptoms are able to receive the medical support they need, and such that the health service is not overwhelmed and crushed by the sheer number of cases it has to treat at any one time.

The government’s experts – the chief medical officer and the chief scientific advisor – have made two big judgements.

First, as the World Health Organisation on Wednesday in effect conceded, that there is no way now of preventing the virus sweeping across Africa, Asia and the Americas – which in practice means that it will be an ever-present threat to the UK, unless and until a mass vaccine is available for use.

Studies are coming out suggesting heat and humidity suppress the virus, hence the lower rates in Africa (even though they're a major trading partner with China).

Second, the kind of coercive measures employed by China in Wuhan and Hubei have simply locked the virus behind the closed doors of people’s homes.

And just as soon as the constraints on freedom of movement are lifted there, the monstrous virus will rear its hideous face again.

That's another major assumption with no evidence yet to back it up.

U.S.-Affiliated Arms Trafficker Assassinated In Southern Syria

A militant who worked as an arm trafficker for the U.S.-led Military Operations Center (MOC) in Jordan was reportedly assassinated in the southern Syrian governorate of Daraa on March 11.

Two unknown gunmen riding a motorcycle shot and killed the trafficker, Farzat Muhammad al-Mahamid, along with his brother, Ihab Mohammed Al-Mahameed, on a road near the town of Om Elmiathin in eastern Daraa.

Farzat had reportedly joined the reconciliation process and received guarantees that he will not be targeted by Syrian security forces.

Such assassinations are usually blamed on the Syrian intelligence. However, there is a chance that the trafficker was targeted by a terrorist group, like ISIS whose cells are known to be active in Daraa.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham Terrorists Clash With Locals In Northern Idlib

On March 12, heavy clashes erupted between Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) security forces and locals in the town of Saramada in the northern Idlib countryside.

According to opposition activists, HTS terrorists attacked an elderly local, Sa’ad Niyah, because he hit their checkpoint with his car by accident. The terrorists insulted the old man and assaulted him with the buttstocks of their rifles.

The incident provoked the locals, who launched an attack on HTS checkpoints around Saramada. After a few minutes of clashes, the terrorists withdrew from some of their positions.

Syrian Military Discovered Terrorist Prison At Former Ice Cream Factory

The Syrian military have discovered a prison and a court, where terrorists sentenced locals to death for even the smallest of infringements in the town of Al Qasimiyah in Aleppo province.

The prison was located in a former ice cream factory.

“This was their prison. There are several cells — both big and small. Even women and children were imprisoned here, a total of 500 people,” a Syrian serviceman named Hadjar told Russian journalists.

The place is littered with prisoners’ belongings and jumpsuits of those sentenced to public executions.

“Here are sewage pits, [the terrorists] dumped those whom they considered particularly dangerous or guilty there,” the serviceman said.

According to the locals, the militants would punish even the smallest infringement: curfew violation, failure to pay debt, a woman appearing without headscarf in public and even for expression of disrespect to the terrorists. The so-called sharia morality police watched over this.

“I’ve been imprisoned for six months,” serviceman Ahmad Mugairi, apprehended by the militants over charges of collaboration with the Syrian army, told journalists. Mugairi managed to escape and joined the government forces. “What Army could I have collaborated with, if there were only militants around for 10 years at that point? See all these papers — these are records of people, most of whom bore no guilt, the militants just disliked them.”

Intense Fighting Erupted Among Turkish-backed Groups In Syria’s Azaz

On March 11, an intense fighting erupted among Turkish-backed militant groups in the town of Azaz in northwestern Syria. According to reports, the clashes took place in the southern vicinity of the town and caused a state of panic among locals. The main reason of tensions is contradictions between Turkish proxies that are involved in a wide range of criminal activities and regularly clash for spheres of influence.

ISIS Claims Its Cells Captured & Executed Seven Syrian Soldiers In Aleppo
