Trump Says Supreme Court Will Decide The Election, Needs A Ninth Justice

Over the weekend, in the aftermath of Ruth Bader GInsburg's death, we said that the "worst case scenario" for markets - a contested election - had become even more complicated as it now appeared that the US was heading into the most controversial election since Gore vs Bush with a SCOTUS that could end up deadlocked with a 4-4 vote should the election outcome escalate to the Supreme Court.

It appears that the president agrees, because moments ago President Trump also predicted that the U.S. Supreme Court will decide the outcome of the November election and argued the Senate should confirm his nominee - who we already know will be a conservative woman - to replace the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg to break any tie.

Trump said that "I think this will end up in the Supreme Court and I think it’s very important to have nine justices."

Speaking before reporters at the White House, he continued, claiming that "this scam that the Democrats are pulling, it’s a scam, this scam will be before the United States Supreme Court,"

Trump plans on Saturday to announce a nominee to replace Ginsburg, a liberal icon who died Friday at 87.

Lawyers representing Trump’s campaign are challenging mail-in voting rules in a host of states, as a result of Trump's claims that mail-in voting is more susceptible to fraud than in-person voting on Election Day.

As reported yesterday, there is a growing probability that the first major test of the new post-RBG iteration of the Supreme Court, which will soon have a 6-3 conservative majority, the GOP is planning to ask SCOTUS to review a major PA state court decision that extended the due date for mail-in ballots in a critical battleground state.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer on Wednesday signed an executive directive setting a goal for the midwestern state to become carbon neutral by 2050, the ninth U.S. state to take on this target.

Whitmer’s plan directs the state’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy to come up with a strategy to carry out the target by the end of next year that would reduce emissions across the state’s key economic sectors.

Michigan, where temperatures have risen over the last three decades across all counties, is the 10th biggest emitter of carbon dioxide emissions, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. It is a swing state in the Nov. 3 presidential election that President Donald Trump, a Republican who has rolled back efforts by Democrats to fight climate change, won narrowly in 2016.

“Through comprehensive and aggressive steps, we will combat the climate crisis by formally setting and relentlessly pursuing a goal of statewide decarbonization by 2050,” said Whitmer, a Democrat. The target will spur the creation of clean energy and energy efficiency jobs, she said.

It calls for all new state-owned buildings to be carbon neutral by 2040 and existing buildings to reduce energy use by 40% by 2040.

Whitmer also set an interim goal for the state to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 28% below 1999 levels by 2025.

Danske Bank Facing US$1 Billion Money Laundering Suit

Plaintiffs are seeking over US$1 billion in an international lawsuit against a Danish bank accused of facilitating rampant money laundering over the course of almost a decade.

Klar Advokater, a Danish law firm that alongside U.S. outfits Grant & Eisenhofer and DRRT is pursuing the civil action, on Tuesday submitted a final set of complaints from pension funds and other investors adversely affected by lax regulatory controls at disgraced Danske Bank, according to a statement from DRRT.

The latest filings bring the overall damages, sought by a total of 331 investors, up to more than 7.1 billion Danish crowns (US$1.12 billion).

Alexander Reus, managing partner at DRRT, said that the financial institution had been all but complicit in the money laundering scandal, which allowed no less than US$230 billion in potentially illicit cash to be funnelled through accounts held by clients at its Estonian branch between 2007 and 2015.

“Danske Bank’s efforts to conceal and misrepresent the true nature of its internal scheme of facilitating and promoting high-profit money laundering services” makes the scandal “one of the most significant money laundering and corporate violation cases in European history,” he said.

It will not be the bank’s only day in court. A slew of other lawsuits are currently in the works, including one brought by more than 70 legal entities representing 155 institutional investors and led by the pan-European consultancy firm Deminor.

Winner of OCCRP’s 2018 title for Actor of the Year in Organised Crime and Corruption, Danske Bank has been the subject of several previous OCCRP investigations, including into how the financial institution played host to a slush fund for Azerbaijani elites accused of human-rights abuses, as well as its role in the notorious Russian Laundromat scandal.

In the wake of revelations contained in those reports, the U.S. Justice Department has undertaken a wide-ranging probe into illicit financial activity at the bank - one which senior executives have since conceded may not leave Denmark’s largest lender “in a position to contest a lot,” according to Bloomberg.

A spokesperson for Danske Bank nevertheless told OCCRP on Wednesday that "we will defend ourselves against any claims that may arise and consider any development in cooperation with our lawyers."

WASHINGTON — Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., introduced a bill Wednesday that would ban the use of camouflage uniforms by federal law enforcement following criticism during the summer that federal agents assigned to control racial protests looked like National Guard troops.

“The Trump administration’s decision to deploy federal law enforcement officers outfitted in camouflage uniforms in response to those protesting the death of George Floyd and other Black Americans blurred the lines between military service members and law enforcement officers while causing even more fear and division,” Duckworth said in a statement.

The Clear Visual Distinction Between Military and Law Enforcement Act would essentially outlaw camouflage for federal police. The measure does not apply to the military, including National Guard and military police troops supporting law enforcement during protests. There is an exception for federal agents who might need to wear camouflage to blend into their surroundings to conduct an operation. However, law enforcement officials would be required to explain each instance that federal agents wore camouflage in a biannual report to Congress

The post on Facebook said that the Honorable Sacred Knights of the Ku Klux Klan would be meeting at Jaycee Park in Madison, Indiana on Aug. 31 for a “kookout” from 1 to 3 p.m., the group’s second gathering along the small town’s riverfront in two years. “Come support,” read the announcement, which included a phone number and email address, inviting the public to contact the HSK to become a member.

Sure enough, on the day of the event, about 18 people milled about in the wooden shelter house on the slice of city-owned green space, most wearing dark colors, a few with bandannas obscuring their faces.

A local counter-protester walked up to them, holding a “Racism is Ignorant” sign and jeering. But, the 18 people were not with the KKK. They belonged to the antifa movement, antifa being short for anti-fascism.

Once the counterprotester realized her mistake, she tentatively joined the anti-fascists, sitting down with her sign in her lap, waiting with them to see if the KKK would show up.

Holly Zoller, a member of Louisville Anti-Racist Action, or Louisville ARA, stood next to one of the shelter’s posts, scanning the roadway.

Louisville ARA was one of three anti-fascist groups that gathered at the shelter. One of them, March 4th Alliance from Louisville, hung a banner saying “Pinko Commie Birthday Party” and decorated the wooden picnic tables with handmade placards fashioned from pilfered “We Buy Houses”signs.

“We got here early and took the pavilion, which is the goal,” Zoller said. Thirty minutes after the KKK had planned to arrive, the stunt seemed to have worked.

But then, at 1:39 p.m., a small parade of cars and trucks drove slowly past the shelter house, one with a distinctive KKK flag hanging from its window. They drove out of sight before looping back around, heading for another shelter house next to where antifa had set up.

That’s when antifa switched to another one of its common tactics and ran toward the second shelter.

A confrontation was about to begin.

Antifa: Decentralized, Controversial

The number of anti-fascists in Louisville is unclear, but they can be seen acting as individuals and in groups to confront far-right and hate groups directly, in person and online.

In April 2017, Louisville’s anti-fascists drove several alleged neo-Nazis from The Irish Rover restaurant in Louisville who had gathered there to celebrate Hitler’s birthday.

In August of the same year, Louisville anti-fascists traveled to Charlottesville to counter far-right protesters who planned to rally around a Confederate statue that the city said it would remove.

In 2018, Louisville antifa members doxxed (publicly revealed the personal information of) people in far-right groups who pepper sprayed Democratic Socialists of America members as they dined at The Silver Dollar restaurant on Frankfort Avenue.

LEO spoke to three Louisville anti-fascists who belong to two of the city’s anti-fascist groups: Louisville ARA and March 4th Alliance.

“We don’t believe in letting Nazis have the streets or letting fascism openly organize or recruit,” said Sean Liter, a member of ARA. “Because the more people they recruit, obviously, the bigger they get and the more dangerous they get.”

Louisville anti-fascists’ tactics and beliefs mirror those of antifa groups across the country and the world.

Predicted Mass Infections From Reopening Schools Fails to Materialize

Last month, we were inundated with stories from teachers’ unions, school administrators, and public health officials about the coming catastrophic outbreak of coronavirus in the schools.

It’s still happening, with New York City schools ready to partially reopen and many other school districts allowing only virtual learning.

But experts tracking the pandemic have been surprised that the expected disaster of tens of thousands of kids getting sick hasn’t happened — yet.

It still might get very bad as large school districts begin to reopen, but so far, the number of infections among K-12 students has been far less than public health officials feared.

Thousands of students and teachers have become sick with the coronavirus since schools began opening last month, but public health experts have found little evidence that the virus is spreading inside buildings, and the rates of infection are far below what is found in the surrounding communities.

This early evidence, experts say, suggests that opening schools may not be as risky as many have feared and could guide administrators as they charter the rest of what is already an unprecedented school year.

“Everyone had a fear there would be explosive outbreaks of transmission in the schools. In colleges, there have been. We have to say that, to date, we have not seen those in the younger kids, and that is a really important observation,” said Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota.

There is a lot to learn about the coronavirus. The media thinks every pronouncement from “experts” should be believed and acted upon and anyone who doesn’t is a “science denier.” But knowledge is cumulative. And when studying a new pathogen, what was true yesterday — or thought to be true — might not be true today — or believed to be true. It might not be true tomorrow.

That’s why people like Dr. Fauci, Dr. Birx, and the rest of them should try to go a few days keeping their mouths shut. We’d be the wiser for it.

Public health officials no doubt were sincere in urging communities not to reopen schools. But they were wrong.

On Wednesday, researchers at Brown University, working with school administrators, released their first set of data from a new National COVID-19 School Response Data Dashboard, created to track coronavirus cases. It found low levels of infection among students and teachers.

Tracking infections over a two-week period beginning Aug. 31, it found that 0.23 percent of students had a confirmed or suspected case of the coronavirus. Among teachers, it was 0.49 percent. Looking only at confirmed cases, the rates were even lower: 0.078 percent for students and 0.15 percent for teachers.

“These numbers will be, for some people, reassuring and suggest that school openings may be less risky than they expected,” said Emily Oster, an economics professor at Brown University who helped create the tracker. She noted that the school coronavirus rates are “much lower” than those in the surrounding community.

They will point to the ambiguity of their previous statements on opening schools, but the bottom line is, they urged parents to keep their kids home and told unions it was unsafe to work. What the study shows is that with proper sensible precautions, kids will be fine at school.

US Judge Orders Eric Trump to Testify in Fraud Probe Involving Family Organization Before Election

Eric Trump, the third child of US President Donald Trump, must testify no later than October 7 as part of a probe into the Trump Organization, Judge Arthur Engoron ruled Wednesday following a New York Supreme Court hearing in Manhattan.

Eric Trump, who serves as a top executive in the Trump Organization, must testify in response to a subpoena from the New York attorney general’s office as part of an investigation into whether the Trump Organization inflated the values of real estate assets on financial statements in order to receive loans and tax benefits.

The probe is being conducted by Attorney General of New York Letitia James.

Lawyers for James’ office on Wednesday argued that Eric Trump should not be allowed to delay a subpoena for his testimony after his lawyers said he would only testify after the US presidential election to avoid his deposition being used “for political purposes.”

“We simply can’t delay compliance for another two months,” attorney Matthew Colangelo said, CNBC reported.

“Mr. [Eric] Trump is asking for a further two-month delay … to the middle of November in response to a subpoena that was served in May and where the parties agreed in early June on a date for his attendance,” Colangelo added.

During the Wednesday hearing, Eric Trump’s lawyer Alan Futerfas said his legal team was “happy for him to sit down and be deposed” but that more time was necessary to review the documents pertaining to the civil probe, the Independent reported.

“As the world knows, there’s an election going on in about four weeks in this country, maybe five weeks. Eric Trump is a vital and integral part of that, and he’s traveling just about seven days a week,” Futerfas argued.

In July, Eric Trump canceled an interview with the New York attorney general’s office, and one month later, the Trump Organization told the office it would not comply with subpoenas connected to the investigation.

James launched an investigation last year after the president’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen testified that the president’s annual financial statements inflated the values of assets to get loans and insurance coverage.

Senate Report Links Hunter Biden to Human Trafficking Ring

The Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs has released a report claiming that Hunter Biden was involved in some corrupt and illegal dealings including human trafficking overseas. The report details huge monetary transactions between Biden and foreign sources as well as transactions that went to foreign women linked to prostitution and human trafficking rings.

The Treasury records acquired by the Chairmen show potential criminal activity relating to transactions among and between Hunter Biden, his family, and his associates with Ukrainian, Russian, Kazakh and Chinese nationals. In particular, these documents show that Hunter Biden received millions of dollars from foreign sources as a result of business relationships that he built during the period when his father was vice president of the United States and after. In addition to providing new and descriptive details about the nature, origin and extent of payments from Burisma Holdings to Hunter Biden, the documents acquired by the Committees also shed light on a much broader array of questionable financial transactions involving Hunter Biden, other members of the Biden family, and their associations with foreign nationals. These foreign nationals have questionable backgrounds that have been identified as being consistent with a range of criminal activities, including but not limited to organized prostitution and/or human trafficking, money laundering, fraud, and embezzlement.26

Hunter Biden has been outed publicly for his extra-marital activities with strippers and for his drug use. Page Six reported that Biden was suspected of smoking crack in a strip club, and that strippers had used sex toys on him, among other unsavory things. One of the strippers had to sue him for child support. The allegation that he may have been in some way involved with prostitutes overseas fit with his character and lifestyle of which we are publicly aware. But the link to human trafficking is disturbing, to say the least.

There is extensive public reporting concerning Hunter Biden’s alleged involvement with prostitution services. Records on file with the Committees do not directly confirm or refute these individual reports. However, they do confirm that Hunter Biden sent thousands of dollars to individuals who have either: 1) been involved in transactions consistent with possible human trafficking; 2) an association with the adult entertainment industry; or 3) potential association with prostitution. Some recipients of those funds are Ukrainian and Russian citizens. The records note that it is a documented fact that Hunter Biden has sent funds to nonresident alien women in the United States who are citizens of Russia and Ukraine and who have subsequently wired funds they have received from Hunter Biden to individuals located in Russia and Ukraine. The records also note that some of these transactions are linked to what “appears to be an Eastern European prostitution or human trafficking ring.”

There sure seems to be a lot of Russian collusion going on here and President Trump is nowhere near it. When will the public hearings begin? A quick review of the Google results for news on Hunter Biden shows that only the New York Post reported this story of Biden’s possible links to human trafficking. The other headlines are maddeningly obscure and clearly meant to convince people there’s nothing to see here.

“Republican Inquiry Finds No Evidence of Wrongdoing by Biden,” reads the New York Times headline. None? No evidence? That’s not what the report seems to say above, but let’s move on. The Washington Post headline says, “GOP senators’ report calls Hunter Biden’s board position with Ukraine firm ‘problematic’ but doesn’t show it changed US policy.” Fox News’s headline is the most boring of them all, assuring no one will click on it: “GOP-led committees release interim report on Hunter Biden, Burisma probe.” Snore. Fox did mention the trafficking in the story but buried the lede in the headline. Politico says, “GOP senators’ anti-Biden report repackages old claims.” Well, that’s just not true. Did anyone ever report that Hunter Biden was involved in human trafficking? I’m sure that’s new. But don’t count on the mainstream press, even Fox News, to tell you about it.
