U.S. policy of expelling migrant children without an asylum interview challenged in class-action lawsuit
The administration has argued in court that the children it seeks to expel under the public health directive are not in the "legal custody" of the immigration authorities physically apprehending them, but rather in the "legal custody" of CDC officials they never interact with while on U.S. soil. Citing this argument, lawyers for the administration have said migrant children are not protected under the landmark Flores Settlement Agreement, which ensures them access to counsel and mandates their prompt release from detention.
In their lawsuit Friday, the ACLU, the Texas Civil Rights Project and Oxfam America argued that the centuries-old public health law the administration is citing to expel migrants does not authorize expulsions. The law, first enacted in the late 19th century and recodified during the 1944s, authorizes the surgeon general to bar the "introduction of persons or property" posing the danger of introducing a communicable disease into the U.S.
The groups argued that expelling unaccompanied migrant children violates a 2008 anti-trafficking statue that requires their prompt transfer to the refugee agency and protects them from expedited deportations, as well as laws that afford them access to humanitarian protections from deportation, like asylum.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Postal Service is warning states coast to coast that it cannot guarantee all ballots cast by mail for the November election will arrive in time to be counted, even if mailed by state deadlines, raising the possibility that millions of voters could be disenfranchised.
Voters and lawmakers in several states are also complaining that some curbside mail collection boxes are being removed.
Even as President Donald Trump rails against widescale voting by mail, the post office is bracing for an unprecedented number of mail-in ballots as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
The warning letters sent to states raise the possibility that many Americans eligible for mail-in ballots this fall will not have them counted. But that is not the intent, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy said in his own letter to Democratic congressional leaders.
The post office is merely “asking elected officials and voters to realistically consider how the mail works, and be mindful of our delivery standards, in order to provide voters ample time to cast ballots through the mail,” wrote DeJoy, a prominent Trump political donor who was recently appointed.

New Jersey will conduct its general election mostly by mail because of the coronavirus pandemic, sending ballots to active registered voters while also providing the option to vote in person, Gov. Phil Murphy (D) announced Friday.
The state piloted a hybrid voting model during its July 7 primary, Murphy said during an interview with CNN and at a later news conference. He touted the experiment as “not perfect, but overwhelmingly a success,” despite President Trump seizing on an alleged criminal voter fraud scheme in Paterson, New Jersey’s third-largest city, during a local election in May.
“All of us recognize the importance of this year’s election,” Murphy said in remarks on Friday afternoon. “Ensuring that every voter has the ability to securely cast their ballot, while protecting public health, is our paramount concern. The recent primary election gave us the opportunity to see what worked and where we could make improvements.”

US Postal Service Files Blockchain Voting Patent Following Trump Cuts
A new patent has been filed by the U.S. Postal Service, or USPS, which appears to use Blockchain technology to make mail-in voting a safe alternative to physical polling stations amid the COVID-19 pandemic. This news follows recent comments from President Donald Trump concerning the mail service's funding as part of his fight against mail-in voting.
"This developement releates to a voting system that also incorporates the use of cryptographic elements, such as blockchains, as are used with cryptographic currencies, to track and secure the vote by mail system," said a patent filing, dated Aug. 13, 2020.
COVID-19 remains a global hot topic as the 2020 U.S. presidential elections draw near. Mail-in voting has also surfaced as a point of contention among members of the country's political parties. Trump opposes the movement, and has suggested withholding further USPS funding as a preventative measure, a CNBC article said.
Although mail-in voting allegedly opens the door for potential voter fraud, voters seek ease of access when recording their political preference in a multi-faceted battle. This has been made more complicated amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. "In some embodiments, a blockchain allows the tracking of the various types of necessary data in a way that is secure and allows others to easily confirm that data has not been altered," the patent detailed.
The patent laid out voting operations based on a blockchain, complete with ballot codes, electronic signatures and other intricate points, working in tandem with two databases. The patent also included various other frameworks and concepts around its central idea of blockchain-based voting.
The postal service's patent is not its first dive into blockchain. The USPS submitted a concept in 2018 which harnessed blockchain for identity authentication.

Pictures reveal Melburnians don’t care
Shoppers crowd on busy Melbourne strip on Saturday morning
Pictures of a bustling shopping strip in Melbourne, taken this morning, have sparked fears that some Victorians believe the pandemic is already over.
You would be forgiven for thinking there were no stage four restrictions in some parts of Melbourne where people have gathered at busy shopping strips.
Authorities have begged people to stay inside today, as sunny weather hits the Victorian capital.
However, one reporter at Oakleigh in the city’s southwest took pictures showing a bustling pedestrian zone outside a shopping centre this morning.
The images appear to show a lack of social distancing and a group of elderly residents sat together on the strip.
Some Victorians have taken to social media, saying they’re worried today’s good weather and the state’s dropping case numbers will result in Melburnians believing the pandemic is over.
Premier Daniel Andrews says it has been a “beautiful morning” in the Victorian capital and that he understands that makes it “frustrating” for Melburnians who are stuck in their home.
He said he hoped it would rain today.
“For any interstate viewers tuning in today, the irony of us complaining that the weather is too
good,” he said. “I think people understand that as frustrating as this is on a beautiful morning, we have people this morning planning funerals of their loved ones.

Rep. Swalwell Calls to Create Commission to Investigate POTUS 'When We Escape This Trump Hell'
Representative Eric Swalwell was one of the key figures behind the impeachment of US President Donald Trump, having penned an article pointing at Trump's alleged "quid pro quo" with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy.
Rep. Eric Swalwell has now suggested creating a commission on "presidential crimes" which would investigate US President Donald Trump when he leaves the Oval Office.
"I don’t say this lightly: when we escape this Trump hell, America needs a Presidential Crimes Commission. It should be made up of independent prosecutors who look at those who enabled a corrupt president. Example 1: Sabotaging the mail to win an election. #SaveThePostOffice," Swalwell tweeted.
Swalwell's tweet came after the US Postal Service released a statement warning state election officials in some states that some mail-in ballots for the upcoming presidential election may not be delivered on time because of new delivery policies and financial troubles exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic.
"The Postal Service is asking election officials and voters to realistically consider how the mail works,” Martha Johnson, a spokesperson for the USPS, said, urging domestic voters to mail their ballots at least a week before state deadlines.
During a Friday presser, Trump, after initially refusing to add funding to the USPS in the coronavirus relief deal, agreed to do so, but only if Democrats "give us what we want", without elaboration on those conditions.
Trump's reluctance to give additional funds to the USPS reportedly stems from concerns that it would streamline mail-in balloting - an idea he vehemently opposes, claiming that it will lead to election rigging.
Democrats, who have denounced Trump for his opposition to mail-in voting, have demanded an "audit of all operational changes" put in place by the Trump administration towards the Postal Service.
Swalwell's accusation of Trump "sabotaging the mail" is not his only one, as the Representative has long been a vocal critic of POTUS, and actively participated in the 2019 impeachment of the president.
