Mar-a-Lago caller charged with threatening former President Donald Trump

An Idaho man named Warren Jones Crazybull has been charged with threatening to kill former President Donald Trump in a series of phone calls made to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, according to court documents.

Crazybull’s calls to security at Trump’s Palm Beach property came on July 31, just weeks after the Republican presidential nominee was shot in the ear during a rally in Pennsylvania. According to a criminal complaint obtained by Forbes, 64-year-old Crazybull made a total of nine menacing phone calls that day, warning of the deadly violence he planned to carry out.

“Find Trump … I am coming down to Bedminster tomorrow,” he said during in the first call, seemingly referencing the location of Trump National Golf Club in New Jersey. “I am going to down him personally and kill him.”

The security team at Mar-a-Lago immediately alerted the Secret Service, telling them they received another eight phone calls from the same number, according to court documents.

A Facebook page that is believed to belong to Crazybull was also filled with threats against the 45th president in addition to ramblings about Jeffrey Epstein, “John John Kennedy Jr” and a “shadow government.”

The son of the man suspected in the assassination attempt in Florida against former President Donald Trump has been arrested on federal charges of possessing child sexual abuse images.

Oran Alexander Routh was arrested this week after authorities searched his Greensboro, North Carolina, home “in connection with an investigation unrelated to child exploitation,” and found hundreds of files depicting child sexual abuse, an FBI agent said in court papers.

Investigators who seized multiple electronic devices found videos sent to Oran Routh in July as well as chats from a messaging application commonly used by people who share child sexual abuse material, the FBI agent said.

He faces two charges of possessing and receiving child sexual abuse material and is expected to appear later Tuesday in federal court in North Carolina.

There was no attorney listed for Oran Routh in court papers. Phone messages left for relatives of Oran Routh were not immediately returned.

Oran Routh’s father, Ryan Wesley Routh, has been charged with federal gun offenses in connection to the attempted assassination at Trump’s Florida golf course earlier this month. Prosecutors have indicated much more serious attempted assassination charges are coming.

Oran Routh’s arrest was first reported Tuesday by ABC News.

A federal judge on Monday agreed with Justice Department prosecutors that Ryan Routh should remain locked up while he awaits trial in his case.

Prosecutors have said Ryan Routh left behind a note detailing his plans to kill the former president and kept in his car a handwritten list of dates and venues where Trump was to appear. The note describing Routh’s plans was placed in a box that he dropped off months earlier at the home of an unidentified person who did not open it until after Ryan Routh’s arrest, prosecutors said.

Ryan Routh is currently charged with illegally possessing his gun in spite of multiple felony convictions, including two charges of possessing stolen goods in 2002 in North Carolina, and with possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

But a prosecutor said in court Monday that they would pursue additional charges before a grand jury, accusing him of having tried to “assassinate a major political candidate” — charges that would warrant life in prison in the event of a conviction.

It is common for prosecutors to file more easily provable charges as an immediate placeholder before adding more significant allegations as the case proceeds.

Ryan Routh was arrested Sept. 15 after a Secret Service agent who was scoping the Trump International Golf Club for potential security threats saw a partially obscured man’s face and the barrel of a semiautomatic rifle, aimed directly at the former president.

The agent fired at Routh, who sped away before being stopped by officials in a neighboring county, leaving behind a loaded rifle, digital camera, a backpack and a reusable shopping bag that was hanging from a chain-link fence.

China confirms ‘successful’ intercontinental ballistic missile test

The Chinese military said that it successfully launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) into the Pacific Ocean on Wednesday, its first such test in more than 40 years.

ICBMs are primarily designed to carry nuclear warheads and China’s latest generation ICBM - Dongfeng-41 (DF-41) – has an operational range of between 12,000 kilometers and 15,000 kilometers (7,500- 9,300 miles), which means it can reach the U.S. mainland.

China’s defense ministry said in a statement that the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Rocket Force successfully launched an ICBM carrying a training simulated warhead into the high seas of the Pacific Ocean early on Wednesday.

The "Environmental Protection" Agency Is Deliberately Poisoning American Consumers

A group of government scientists say they were pressured by management at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to present new chemicals they were investigating as being safer than they actually were.

When they failed to delete evidence of the serious dangers associated with the chemicals, their managers did it themselves.

The scientists claim that after pushing back, they were hit with negative performance reviews, while some lost their positions in the new chemical division and were reassigned to other parts in the agency.

Last week, the Inspector General of the EPA announced their finding that three of the scientists’ treatment can be considered retaliation, confirming that their negative reviews and reassignments were retaliatory. They also concluded that the scientists being denied a work-related incentive that can be used to take time off or traded for cash was retaliatory as well.

The report instructed the EPA to take “appropriate corrective action” as a result, including a potential three-day minimum suspension for supervisors who violated the Whistleblower Protection Act.

In response to the report, EPA assistant administrator Michael Freedhoff sent a letter to the Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention explaining that all managers would be undergoing “refresher training” on the Whistleblower Protection Act as well as scientific integrity in general and that their office would be reviewing the reports to see if additional action is needed.

Further reports are expected to be released about the scientific allegations made by the whistleblowers.

The three whistleblowers in question – Sarah Gallagher, William Irwin and Martin Phillips – maintained that the chemicals they were vetting for the agency could cause damages ranging from neurological problems and miscarriages to cancer.

The EPA appears to be trying to shift the blame for what happened to former President Donald Trump as the incident took place during his administration. They say that the agency was under pressure to push chemicals through the approval process more quickly.

One of the whistleblowers, William Irwin, who possesses doctorates in molecular biology and biochemistry as well as board certifications in toxicology, says that he was transferred out of the new chemicals division after he refused to change reports, including one that cautioned about a chemical potentially causing immune, neurological and reproductive problems.

Meanwhile, whistleblower Martin Phillips said that the experience was traumatic, from the hostility he received from supervisors to having his professional work changed and worrying about whether he should inform authorities about what was happening.

“I’m worried about the future because there are groups out there pushing for changes to the civil service that would make it so I could be fired and replaced with a non-scientist,” he added.

He explained that on one occasion, a report he wrote about a chemical causing birth defects and miscarriages in rats was deleted and replaced with another one that did not include this important fact.

The US Senate report on the Trump assassination attempt by Thomas Matthew Crooks in Butler, PA on July 13 was released on Wednesday morning and it reveals, as Senator Richard Blumenthal warned it would, shocking security failures by the US Secret Service. That agency knew that Crooks was on the building for 27 minutes ahead of the attempt on Trump's life, which killed one man and injured others.

"At approximately 5:45 pm, USSS personnel were notified that local law enforcement observed a suspicious person with a rangefinder near the AGR building. By 5:52 pm, at least eight USSS personnel had been informed. Approximately two minutes before shots were fired…" the report reads.

The findings of the report list 12 key points of complete and total failure where Secret Service should have taken action to protect the president and take out the shooter and completely failed to do so, nearly costing the nation a former and perhaps future president and depriving a family of father and husband in the preventable death of Corey Comperatore.

Hoo boy. As any good or even competent IT person will tell you, adult websites are the perfect way to ruin your life. This is not just because you are breaking the law or risking putting yourself into a compromising position or even because of the mortality of the matter — not that morality is not important. Another good reason to steer clear of sketchy sites is that they are rife with viruses and bots designed to steal one's identity or bank information.

In the 21st century, that is common knowledge for most adults, and it should be a no-brainer for congressional staffers with official emails. It should, in particular, be a no-brainer for people who work for congresspeople and senators.

Alas and alack, it is also common knowledge that we do not often send our best and brightest to the nation's capital, and we are not just talking about elected officials like we usually are on these pages.

The Washington Times noted that the internet security firm Proton reported on Tuesday that the personal information of approximately 3,191 congressional staff members was found on the dark web. Compromised data included passwords, social media information, and IP addresses. One poor schlep had 31 passwords exposed.

How did such a terrible thing come to pass, you ask? Did you read the headline? These people were signing up for porn and dating sites using their official email addresses. The Times wrote:

“Many of these leaks likely occurred because staffers used their official email addresses to sign up for various services, including high-risk sites such as dating and adult websites, which were later compromised in data breaches,” Proton said in a statement.

“This situation highlights a critical security lapse, where sensitive work-related emails became entangled with less secure, third-party platforms…“The volume of exposed accounts among U.S. political staffers is alarming, and the potential consequences of compromised accounts could be severe,” said Eamonn Maguire, Proton head of account security, in a statement. “Vigilance and strict security measures are essential to safeguard personal and national security.”

Who knows? Maybe some kid thought using his congressional email address would make him a chick magnet. None of them were probably thinking at all.

Some of this could probably be alleviated if our legislators hired people who were not just out of puberty or the frat house by a couple of months. Or they could just sit their staffers down on the first or second day of employment and explain to them the massive and solemn obligation they have undertaken by serving in the people's house.

They need to understand what a privilege it is for them to serve their nation in such a capacity, which takes precedence over their base desires. They need to be inculcated with a sense of duty and awe commensurate with the obligation they have undertaken. They need…

In the backroom, OPTN leaders assure that no OPO leader will be held accountable for poor performance, and seek to prevent competition,' he continued.

'They threaten to sabotage any new contractor by refusing to release data and share information centers, and intimidated and retaliated against those in the community with whom they disagreed.'

The Kentucky Attorney General’s Office said it is investigating the allegation against KODA, which went on to slam Martin's claims in a statement.

'Our commitment to ethical practices means that we follow rigorous protocols to ensure patient safety and integrity throughout the organ donation process,' it read.

'Organ donation only proceeds after a patient has been declared deceased by independent clinicians from the treating hospital, and we have clear procedures to follow if a patient's condition changes.

'We do not make determinations of death, nor do we compromise ethical standards for organ donation.'

During her time in HR, Ashley Herd noticed four traits good employees have in common.

Dependability, strong communication, problem-solving, and teamwork are key to job security.

But even if workers have these traits, they may be laid off because of investor or board decisions.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Ashley Herd, the 43-year-old founder and CEO of Manager Method in Atlanta. It has been edited for length and clarity.

Before starting my own company, I worked in HR for 20 years and spent time in employment law. Now, I help organizations train managers in skills such as delegation, performance management, and communication.

After years in human resources, I noticed several traits that make for the best employees — the ones the company will do anything to keep, even in a downturn.

When decisions are made about who gets laid off, sometimes managers have no choice, but they occasionally get to "save" someone.

Being the person they can count on can make a difference. Four traits are common among those employees.

1. You're dependable

The best employees are dependable. This usually means meeting deadlines, keeping their word, and being someone the organization knows will get their work done.

If a dependable employee is asked to have something done by the end of the week, they do it. Their manager never has to ask, "What happened to this assignment?"

When you're dependable, your company or team is more likely to try to keep you.

2. You're a strong communicator

Companies will also fight for strong communicators. Ideally, your manager will tell you the information you need to know, but if you miss something, you will communicate it.

This involves asking about deadlines and formats and repeating the information to your manager to ensure you're on the same page. As you work, you might bring up any issues as quickly as possible instead of avoiding confrontation.

Neither you nor your manager is a robot, but proactive communication is key. When sharing challenges with your manager, be clear about what you want: "I don't need help, just a listening ear for a minute and some reassurance that it gets easier."

If you're looking for help, self-preservation could mean being realistic about what your manager can, and can't, do: "I'm trying to figure out what to do and would love your help figuring out the best option."

This helps you advocate for yourself with an eye toward what's possible, not another issue your manager doesn't have control over.

3. You're a problem-solver

Employers will want to keep problem-solvers, not just problem-spotters. If something comes up, you're not just telling your manager, "This person isn't giving me what I need," or, "This is too hard." Instead, you have solutions, too.

You might talk about what you've done to address the issue, such as, "I reached out to them and explained that we need this to meet the deadline, but I'm stuck. Could you send an email?"

To be a great employee, you don't have to have every solution, but showing ownership and having ideas could help solve the problem much more quickly.

4. You're a great team player

Being a team player is important for more than just your development. You might say to your teammates, "Feel free to ask me any questions anytime," and you might also take a genuine interest in who your coworkers are as people, not only their work.

Good team players might vent to each other, have real conversations, and solve problems together.

When team members are like this, it can be like working in comfortable joggers instead of tight jeans, as you have breathing room and don't have to feel so tense.

When you're a good team player, your manager is more likely to fight for you to stay on their team. In any role, there's a human element — being the person people look forward to working with can influence decisions.

Even with these traits …

While you might have these traits, your position could still be cut, leaving you to wonder what you did wrong. But often, the people who work with you directly aren't the ones deciding to lay you off. Instead, those decisions are usually made by investors, boards of directors, and people looking at numbers on spreadsheets.

Even if your manager fights to keep you, they might not be able to. I often hear managers say, "If I had the opportunity, I would do anything to keep this person," but they can't. It's hard, and it's detrimental to people professionally and personally.

It's important to remember that sometimes, these decisions are out of your control, but displaying good traits can strengthen your case.

Russia wants peace with Ukraine, but will not be forced into it, spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky is “delusional” if he believes Moscow can be forced into peace on Kiev’s terms, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.

In his address to the UN Security Council in New York on Tuesday, Zelensky claimed that the Russia-Ukraine conflict “cannot be calmed by talks” and that Moscow “can only be forced into peace.”

“=A stance that is based on an attempt to force Russia into peace is an absolutely fatal mistake because it is impossible to force Russia into peace==,” Peskov told journalists on Wednesday.

The Ukrainian leader’s stated position is “a profound delusion that will inevitably have consequences for the Kiev regime,” he warned.

“Russia is in favor of peace, but on the condition that the foundations of its security are ensured and the goals of the special military operation are fulfilled,”Peskov stressed.

Zelensky arrived in the US at the weekend to meet with President Joe Biden, members of Congress, and both presidential contenders – Kamala Harris and Donald Trump – and present them with his ‘peace plan,’ which he recently renamed a ‘victory plan.’

According to the Ukrainian leader, the scheme could end the conflict between Moscow and Kiev by the end of this year if Washington and its allies make “quick decisions” on increasing their support for Ukraine.

The initiative has not been made available to the public, but the Sunday Times has reported that it isbased on four clauses: Western security guarantees for Ukraine, similar to NATO’s principle of collective defense, a continuation of Kiev’s incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region to serve as a territorial bargaining chip, deliveries of “specific” advanced weapons by foreign backers, and international financial aid for Ukraine.

Zelensky told ABC News on Tuesday that his plan “is not about negotiation with Russia.” It is aimed at “the strengthening of Ukraine, Ukrainian army and Ukrainian people. Only in a strong position can we push [Russian President Vladimir] Putin to stop the war [in a] diplomatic way,” he said.

Bloomberg reported on Tuesday, citing informed officials, thatWestern leaders with whom the Ukrainian leader discussed his scheme were left unimpressed. One official said it did not contain any surprises and was not a game-changer, while anotherdismissed the initiative as simply “a wish list.”

Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS is now visible in the early morning sky. Diving into the inner Solar System at an odd angle, this large dirty iceberg will pass its closest to the Sun between the orbits of Mercury and Venus in just two days. Long camera exposures are now capturing C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS), sometimes abbreviated as just A3, and its dust tail before and during sunrise. The featured image composite was taken four days ago and captured the comet as it rose above Lake George, NSW, Australia. Vertical bands further left are images of the comet as the rising Sun made the predawn sky increasingly bright and colorful. Just how bright the comet will become over the next month is currently unknown as it involves how much gas and dust the comet's nucleus will expel. Optimistic skywatchers are hoping for a great show where Tsuchinshan–ATLAS creates dust and ion tails visible across Earth's sky and becomes known as the Great Comet of 2024.

German farmers struggling against Ukrainian grain – Bild

Low prices are forcing local producers to sell off superior quality wheat, the news outlet has reported

Uncontrolled supplies of cheap grain from Ukraine are undercutting German farmers, Bild has reported, citing industry sources.

Prices for wheat in Germany, the EU’s biggest economy, are continuing to decline, the tabloid noted, adding that a ton of the commodity is currently hovering around €200 ($224). Wheat prices saw an unprecedented surge from €287 ($321) to €435 ($486) shortly after the Ukrainian conflict escalated in February 2022.

Significantly more wheat, which should be exported further afield, is currently coming to Germany due to drastically limited loading options in the Black Sea, according to Bauer Dismer, a grain farmer from Lower Saxony who was quoted by Bild.

“But our mills and feed mills take advantage instead. Apparently at dumping prices of less than €160 ($179) per ton,” he told the newspaper.

The official agreement governing the freight route for Ukrainian agricultural exports lapsed in July 2023, when Moscow declined to renew the original Türkiye- and UN-mediated Black Sea Grain Initiative. Russia said the US and EU had not kept their part of the deal, blocking exports of Russian food and fertilizer.

Shortly after the escalation of Ukrainian conflict, the EU suspended all tariffs and quotas on Ukrainian agricultural produce to enable grain from the country to be shipped onward to global markets. Earlier this year, the tariff-free trade model was extended for another year.

“We are selling off our wheat that is produced under the highest German standards, while wheat from Ukraine is being pumped into the country,” Frank Wullekopf told the newspaper, adding thatUkrainian producers are not obliged to provide proof of pesticides or fertilizer quantities.

“Not to mention the dangers posed by war-related contamination of the wheat,” the farmer added.

Meanwhile, prices for baked products in Germany are rising despite the notable decline in grain prices, according to Friedemann Berg, managing director of the German Bakers’ Confederation, as cited by the news outlet. Other costs covering personnel, energy, and bureaucracy have also increased, he said, adding that bakers in the EU have been obliged since January to certify that the production of the raw materials they use did not lead to the destruction of forests.

Farmers are not the only industry players impacted by a massive influx of cheap agricultural products from the embattled country, Bild noted, noting that producers of agricultural equipment are suffering as well, as grain growers cannot afford to bring their farming machinery up to date.

If you've been waiting all year for Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS to reach its best, excited at the possibility of it becoming a naked-eye sight in the autumn sky, imagine what it would be like to see the comet from space.

NASA astronauts Matthew Dominick and Don Pettit have been observing and photographing Comet C/2023 A3 from the International Space Station and sharing their views on X (formerly Twitter).

They were able to spot the comet from the Space Station's cupola, which is a module on the ISS used for observing external activities like spacewalks or approaching spacecraft.

Astronauts also use the cupola to watch Earth's continents and oceans drift by as the Space Station orbits our planet, often capturing incredible images of Earth from space.

Comet C/2023 A3 from the Space Station

On 20 September, NASA astronaut Matthew Dominick posted a timelapse video of Comet C/2023 A3 from space, writing "so far Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS looks like a fuzzy star to the naked eye looking out the cupola windows."

"But with a 200mm, f2 lens at 1/8s exposure you can really start to see it.

"This comet is going to make for some really cool images as it gets closer to the Sun."

Then on 22 September, NASA astronaut Don Pettit followed Dominick's lead and captured his own images of Comet C/2023 A3.

"It is totally awesome to see a comet from orbit," he wrote on X.

"The perspective of rising through the atmosphere on edge is truly unique from our vantage point.

"The comet tail is still too dim to see with your eyes, but it is heading towards the sun and growing brighter every day."

But how did the astronauts know where to look to find the comet?

Pettit hinted at Dominick's background in engineering and physics, as well as his experience as a Naval test pilot.

"Matthew used math (go figure) and our orbital geometry to figure out where to point our cameras and was the first to get a good photo," Pettit explained on X.

"Using Matthew’s technique, I will photograph every day to see what develops in the tail structure.

"Currently, there appears to be a forward directed 'tail' that I am not certain is real or an artefact from shooting through 4 window panes.

"Time will tell if this structure brightens. Stay tuned."

If you want to observe Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS for yourself, the next few weeks will be prime period.

It will be visible in Virgo at the start of October, and will look amazing through binoculars or a telescope.

There's even hope that the comet may become naked-eye, but comets are unpredictable, and this is not yet certain.

Mexico finalized plans to take control of a port and quarry owned by Vulcan Materials Co. on its Caribbean coast, deepening tensions days before the nation’s president leaves office.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s administration declared the land south of the resort cities of Cancun and Playa del Carmen a natural protected area, according to a filing in the federal gazette published hours after U.S. lawmakers sought to dissuade such a move.

The move prevents the Alabama-based construction company from extracting limestone at a site it has been developing for decades. Its shares fell 1.2 per cent to US$249.46 in New York on Tuesday morning.

“The expropriation of our company owned land and port is yet another escalation and is a new violation of Mexico’s commitments under North American trade agreements,” Vulcan said in a statement. “This unlawful measure will have a chilling and long-term effect on US-Mexico trade and investment relations.”

The company previously said that the López Obrador government’s actions are illegal, and that it would add the most recent measures to an ongoing arbitration case.

This week’s expropriation marks another move against business interests by Lopez Obrador, a staunch nationalist who finishes his single six-year term this month. A new congress was sworn in Sept. 1 after June congressional elections gave the president’s party large majorities in both houses. =It has since approved a judicial overhaul that’s drawn criticism from international investors.==

President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum, who takes office Oct. 1, hasn’t commented publicly on the Vulcan issue since her landslide victory. But a year ago she said she hoped the company would accept the government’s offer to purchase the land.

Bloomberg News reported in July that AMLO, as the outgoing president is known, was moving toward the protection designation.Last year, Vulcan sought the Biden administration’s intervention againstwhat it saw as the threat of a government takeover of the Mayan Riviera property. It said a $360 million valuation deeply undervalued the assets.

On Monday, a bipartisan group of U.S. senators proposed legislation to pressure AMLO to back down from the expropriation plan.

Vulcan has been in litigation with Mexico since 2018 under the North American Free Trade Agreement, known as Nafta. The pact was replaced with the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement during the Trump administration.

AMLO had previously alleged environmental damage and sent the Mexican marines to occupy the land. Vulcan’s chief executive officer defended its environmental record, citing international awards and its reforestation efforts.

Vulcan isn’t the only foreign companythat has sought legal recourse after a government intervention under AMLO. In December,Mexico took control of operations at a hydrogen processing plant owned by French industrial gas manufacturer Air Liquide. Last year, AMLO announced plans to buy US$6 billion worth of energy assets from Iberdrola SA after the Spanish company faced political hostility from Mexico that affected its permits and supply.

AMLO also ordered the cancellation of projects including an airport and a beer plant during his term.

U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar has warned that companies may lose confidence in Mexico as an investment destination as a result of the judicial reform pushed through Congress this month. The change removes a check on government power by making federal judges democratically elected, including at the Supreme Court.

Williams Leads Station as Crew Swap Operations Continue

Expedition 72 is officially underway with NASA astronaut Suni Williams as its commander aboard the International Space Station.

Meanwhile, the nine orbital residents are awaiting more visitors while also preparing for the next crew departure.

Williams took command of the orbital outpost when NASA astronaut Tracy C. Dyson and Roscosmos cosmonauts Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chub undocked from the Prichal docking module at 4:36 a.m. EDT on Monday.

The trio inside the Soyuz MS-25 crew ship parachuted to a landing in Kazakhstan at 7:59 a.m. EDT (4:59 p.m. Kazakhstan time).

Williams, who arrived at the station with NASA Flight Engineer Butch Wilmore on June 6, will lead orbital outpost operations until February when she and Wilmore are scheduled to return to Earth with the SpaceX Crew-9 members aboard the Dragon Endurance spacecraft.

Williams was busy Tuesday readying standard emergency equipment ahead of Crew-9’s upcoming arrival.

Wilmore explored how specialized substances gel and coarsen possibly leading to advancements in the pharmaceutical, food, and 3D printing industries.

NASA and SpaceX teams have adjusted the next launch opportunity for NASA’s SpaceX Crew-9 mission to no earlier than 1:17 p.m. EDT, Saturday, Sept. 28, from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida due to expected tropical storm conditions in the area.

The change allows teams to complete a rehearsal of launch day activities Tuesday night with the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft and Falcon 9 rocket, which rolled to Space Launch Complex-40 earlier in the day.

Following rehearsal activities, the integrated system will move back to the hangar ahead of any potential storm activity.

Although Tropical Storm Helene is moving through the Gulf of Mexico and expected to impact the Florida panhandle, the storm system is large enough that high winds and heavy rain are expected in the Cape Canaveral and Merritt Island regions on Florida’s east coast.

NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov are to launch aboard the Dragon spacecraft to the International Space Station on what will be the ninth crew rotation mission with SpaceX under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program. They will conduct research and perform maintenance activities during their five-month mission. The mission is launch from Space Launch Complex-40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

In the meantime, the SpaceX Crew-8 mission, which has been aboard the station since March 5, is getting ready to end its stay in early October.

NASA astronauts Matthew Dominick and Mike Barratt, the Commander and Pilot respectively of Crew-8’s Dragon Endeavour, reviewed spacecraft systems and packed personal items and other cargo throughout Tuesday.

Dominick also trained for the upcoming rendezvous and docking of the Crew-9 mission.

Also returning with Crew-8 is NASA astronaut Jeanette Epps and Roscosmos cosmonaut Alexander Gorbunov.

However, Epps focused on an advanced life support experiment on Tuesday swapping out hardware on a device that may inform the future design of water and urine processors in different gravity environments.

Grebenkin tried on the Roscosmos-designed lower body negative pressure suit with assistance from fellow cosmonaut Ivan Vagner.

The suit may alleviate space-caused head and eye pressure symptoms and help crews adjust quicker to the return to Earth’s gravity.

Vagner is continuing to get up to speed with space station systems since his arrival with cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin and astronaut Don Pettit on Sept. 11.

He and Ovchinin spent some time on Tuesday getting familiar with operations aboard the orbital outpost.

Pettit worked out on the advanced resistive exercise device as cameras and a motion capture system monitored his form.

Observations may inform unique microgravity workouts to keep astronauts fit and healthy on long-term missions farther away from Earth.

In Odd Galaxy, NASA's Webb Finds Potential Missing Link to First Stars

Looking deep into the early universe with NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, astronomers have found something unprecedented: a galaxy with an odd light signature, which they attribute to its gas outshining its stars.

Found approximately one billion years after the big bang, galaxy GS-NDG-9422 (9422) may be a missing-link phase of galactic evolution between the universe’s first stars and familiar, well-established galaxies.

“My first thought in looking at the galaxy’s spectrum was, ‘that’s weird,’ which is exactly what the Webb telescope was designed to reveal:

totally new phenomena in the early universe that will help us understand how the cosmic story began,” said lead researcher Alex Cameron of the University of Oxford.

Cameron reached out to colleague Harley Katz, a theorist, to discuss the strange data.

Working together, their team found that computer models of cosmic gas clouds heated by very hot, massive stars, to an extent that the gas shone brighter than the stars, was nearly a perfect match to Webb’s observations.

“It looks like these stars must be much hotter and more massive than what we see in the local universe, which makes sense because the early universe was a very different environment,” said Katz, of Oxford and the University of Chicago.

In the local universe, typical hot, massive stars have a temperature ranging between 70,000 to 90,000 degrees Fahrenheit (40,000 to 50,000 degrees Celsius).

According to the team, galaxy 9422 has stars hotter than 140,000 degrees Fahrenheit (80,000 degrees Celsius).

The research team suspects that the galaxy is in the midst of a brief phase of intense star formation inside a cloud of dense gas that is producing a large number of massive, hot stars.

The gas cloud is being hit with so many photons of light from the stars that it is shining extremely brightly.

In addition to its novelty, nebular gas outshining stars is intriguing because it is something predicted in the environments of the universe’s first generation of stars, which astronomers classify as Population III stars.

“We know that this galaxy does not have Population III stars, because the Webb data shows too much chemical complexity.

However, its stars are different than what we are familiar with – the exotic stars in this galaxy could be a guide for understanding how galaxies transitioned from primordial stars to the types of galaxies we already know,” said Katz.

At this point, galaxy 9422 is one example of this phase of galaxy development, so there are still many questions to be answered.

Are these conditions common in galaxies at this time period, or a rare occurrence? What more can they tell us about even earlier phases of galaxy evolution?

Cameron, Katz, and their research colleagues are actively identifying more galaxies to add to this population to better understand what was happening in the universe within the first billion years after the big bang.

“It’s a very exciting time, to be able to use the Webb telescope to explore this time in the universe that was once inaccessible,” Cameron said. “We are just at the beginning of new discoveries and understanding.”

Sahara Desert Turns Green, NASA Shares Stunning Image of Transformation

One of the driest places on Earth is seeing a surprising burst of greenery, as heavy rainfall has led to vegetation sprouting across the typically barren Sahara Desert.

NASA's satellite images reveal patches of plant life emerging in the desert following an extratropical cyclone that drenched parts of northwestern Africa on September 7 and 8.

Regions in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya, which rarely receive rain, are now showing traces of green, according to NASA's Earth Observatory.

Shrubs and trees are growing in low-lying areas like riverbeds, explained Sylwia Trzaska, a climate variability researcher at the Columbia Climate School.

Peter de Menocal, president of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, noted that while it's rare, plant life does respond quickly to heavy rain events in this part of Africa.

When substantial rain falls, dunes transform into lush, green landscapes for a brief time as plants take full advantage of the moisture.

Historically, the Sahara was once covered in vegetation and lakes between 11,000 and 5,000 years ago, de Menocal's past research suggests.

Now, even lakes that are typically dry are filling up due to this recent deluge, according to Moshe Armon, a lecturer at the Institute of Earth Sciences, Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

The unusual rainfall event was triggered by the northward movement of the tropical rain belt, known as the Intertropical Convergence Zone, reaching farther north than usual, bringing heavy rains typical of equatorial regions into the Sahara.

Some areas saw over half a foot of rain, which far exceeds the typical annual precipitation of just a few inches.

While the rains largely affected sparsely populated areas, devastating floods have killed over 1,000 people and affected around 4 million across 14 African nations, according to the World Food Programme and the Associated Press.

Experts believe the shift in the rain belt is influenced by record-high ocean temperatures and climate change, which could lead to further changes in rainfall patterns across Africa.

However, as ocean temperatures balance out globally, the rain belt is expected to shift back south, potentially crossing the equator, according to de Menocal.

SpaceX's next astronaut mission has been delayed by a powerful storm.

The company had been planning to launch the Crew-9 mission to the International Space Station (ISS) for NASA from Florida's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on Thursday afternoon (Sept. 26).

However, that target date has slipped by at least two days, thanks to a maelstrom named Helene.

Helene is a tropical storm at the moment, but it's expected to slam into Florida's Gulf Coast on Thursday as a Category 3 hurricane.

Thus, NASA and SpaceX now aim to launch Crew-9 on Saturday (Sept. 28) at the earliest. Liftoff that day would be at 1:17 p.m. EDT (1717 GMT).

"Although Tropical Storm Helene is moving through the Gulf of Mexico and expected to impact the Florida panhandle, the storm system is large enough that high winds and heavy rain are expected in the Cape Canaveral and Merritt Island regions on Florida's east coast," NASA officials said in an update this afternoon (Sept. 24).

Crew-9's Falcon 9 rocket and Crew Dragon capsule, named Freedom, rolled out to the launch pad today.

Mission team members will conduct rehearsal activities with the hardware tonight, then roll the rocket-capsule combo "back to the hangar ahead of any potential storm activity," NASA officials wrote.

Crew-9 will send NASA's Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov to the ISS.

They'll live on the station for about five months, coming home in February 2025.

Crew Dragon capsules usually carry four people to the orbiting lab, but NASA is saving two seats on Freedom for astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore, who need a ride back to Earth.

Williams and Wilmore arrived at the ISS in June on the first-ever crewed flight of Boeing's Starliner capsule.

That mission was supposed to last just 10 days or so, but after Starliner experienced thruster problems in orbit, NASA extended the capsule's ISS stay while studying the issue.

The agency ultimately decided to bring Starliner home uncrewed, which occurred without incident on Sept. 7.

Williams and Wilmore remain aboard the ISS; they'll end up spending about eight months in orbit, if all goes according to plan.

As its name suggests, Crew-9 will be the ninth operational astronaut mission SpaceX launches to the ISS for NASA.

Elon Musk's company has six other crewed flights under its belt as well — a test mission to the station for NASA in 2020, three private flights to the ISS and two commercial efforts that circled Earth solo.

Like SpaceX, Boeing holds a contract with NASA's Commercial Crew Program.

It's unclear, however, when the aerospace giant will launch its first long-duration crewed flight to the ISS, given the issues that Starliner experienced on the recent test flight.

1 week until annular solar eclipse turns the sun into a dramatic 'ring of fire'

On Wednesday, Oct. 2, an annular solar eclipse will be visible over parts of the Pacific Ocean, southern Chile and southern Argentina.

Though the path of annularity — a 165 to 206-mile (265 to 331-kilometer) wide route where the moon will cover up to about 93% of the sun's disk — passes over a small portion of land, eager eclipse chasers unable to watch in person will be able to follow along here on Space.com's solar eclipse live blog and watch the action unfold via numerous livestreams.

Details of which will be released closer to the time.

An annular solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and Earth, casting a shadow on Earth.

During an annular solar eclipse, the moon is slightly farther away from the sun compared to a total solar eclipse whereby it completely obscures the solar disk.

Therefore the moon doesn't completely eclipse the sun but instead creates a spectacular "ring of fire."

REMEMBER to NEVER look directly at the sun. To view this solar eclipse safely you must use solar filters at all times.

Whether your location will experience a partial solar eclipse or an annular solar eclipse, the dangers are the same.

Observers will need to wear solar eclipse glasses, and cameras, telescopes and binoculars must have solar filters placed in front of their lenses at all times.

Approximately 175,000 people live within the path of annularity, making this solar eclipse a rather remote affair.

'We are close:' SETI astrobiologist Nathalie Cabrol on the search for life

A leading astrobiologist melds her passion with the weighty nature of trying to grasp for answers to two key questions:

Are we alone in the universe? How did life on Earth begin in the first place?

Nathalie Cabrol's book, "The Secret Life of the Universe: An Astrobiologist's Search for the Origins and Frontiers of Life" (Scribner/Simon & Schuster), released last month, offers an insightful and reflective view of the search for life — a mind-stretching quest not only looking "out there" but also right here on Earth.

Perhaps part of the challenge is that humankind is both the observer and the observation, Cabrol explains.

That is, we are life trying to understand itself and its origin. "We are reminded that the universe is both an enigmatic puzzle and a profound mirror reflecting our own existence," Cabrol writes.

Nathalie Cabrol is a French-American explorer and the director of the Carl Sagan Center for Research at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California.

In an exclusive interview, Space.com discussed with her the new book and the professional odyssey that she has embarked upon.

Space.com: Your book consists of a dozen unique chapters - is there a theme linking them? Perhaps in those subjects you tackled, you were on your own personal journey to help recognize the issues surrounding the are we alone question?

Nathalie Cabrol: The questioning behind every single chapter is that we're looking for something that we don't understand. It's a point of reference that this is us.

And that's okay. It doesn't matter that we don't have the answers. Because if we had the answers we wouldn't make the journey.

Space.com: So that journey is one that's open-ended in that we should standby for surprises?

Cabrol: The chapters are the journey. Each one helps you see a different perspective, a different angle, shine a different light on a question.

I am not necessarily buying the way we're going after life in the universe right now. I'm very vocal about this. But this is where we are and this is what we have.

The missions are telling us that the stuff we're made of is not an accident. It's almost common out there.

I wanted to share at the same time there are unanswered questions … show there might be other ways of exploring for life.

Space.com: You write about Mars and the long saga of looking for life on the Red Planet. In particular, flagging the Viking Labeled Release (LR) experiment of the 1970s, results that you say today are still deemed inconclusive.

Cabrol: Yes, it's inconclusive and just another acknowledgment that five decades later you have people thinking that it showed that life was there on Mars.

We have today evidence those results could be achieved without life and by the environment alone. That [evidence] says we didn't demonstrate that life was there.

You have to prove that the environment alone didn't yield those LR results. Environment and life … how do you detangle the two and come up with an unambiguous signature of life?

When life is somewhere, you don't have one or the other anymore. You have co-evolution, a mixed thing, a living world.

Space.com: Is the search for Mars life a template, a teaching tool, for looking for life elsewhere?

Cabrol: It depends on the scenario you are choosing. Scenario 1 is that life never appeared on Mars, period.

The problem for us will be to demonstrate that. In science this is the hardest one — when do we pull the plug and just admit that there's no life on Mars and we're sure of that.

Scenario 2 is Mars has life, but unfortunately somehow we contaminated each other through planetary exchange.

So it's likely to be related and not teaching us much about other types of life. Scenario 3 is that life on Mars is found to be a separate genesis.

Mars can teach us general rules of looking for life elsewhere, and especially the relationship between life and the environment.

It will teach us general rules of co-evolution for sure. Can it teach us how to search for life on Titan or on Venus?

I don't think so. Those environments are so different.

Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones' Infowars media platform and its assets will be sold off piece by piece in auctions this fall to help pay the more than $1 billion he owes relatives of victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, under an order expected to be approved by a federal judge.

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez in Houston said during a court hearing Tuesday that he will approve the auctions that start in November. But he said he first must change a previous order to make it clear that the trustee overseeing Jones’ personal bankruptcy case controls all the assets of Infowars parent company Free Speech Systems, which is owned 100% by Jones.

Despite the pending loss of his company, Jones vows to continue his talk shows through other means, possibly including a new website and his personal social media accounts. He also has suggested that Infowars’ assets could be bought by his supporters, allowing him to continue hosting his show as an employee under the Infowars brand in their home city of Austin, Texas.

“It’s very cut and dry that the assets of Free Speech Systems, the website, the equipment, the shopping cart, all that, can be sold,” Jones said on a recent show. “And they know full well that there are a bunch of patriot buyers, and then the operation can ease on.”

Jones and his company both filed for bankruptcy protection in 2022 — the same year Sandy Hook families won nearly $1.5 billion in defamation and emotional distress lawsuits against Jones for his repeatedly calling the 2012 school shooting a hoax staged by “crisis actors” to get more gun control legislation passed. Twenty first graders and six educators were killed in the Newtown, Connecticut shooting.

During two civil trials in Texas and Connecticut, parents and children of many of the victims testified that they were traumatized by Jones’ hoax conspiracies and his followers’ actions. They said they were harassed and threatened by Jones’ believers, some of whom confronted the grieving families in person saying the shooting never happened and their children never existed. One parent said someone threatened to dig up his dead son’s grave.

Jones is appealing the civil jury verdicts, citing free speech rights and questioning whether the families proved any connection between his comments, and the people who harassed and threatened the relatives. He has since acknowledged that the shooting did happen.

In June, Lopez converted Jones’ personal bankruptcy reorganization case into a liquidation, meaning many of his assets will be sold off to pay creditors except for his main home and other exempt property. The same day, Lopez also dismissed Free Speech Systems’ bankruptcy case after Jones and the families could not reach agreement on a final plan.

The sell-off order Lopez intends to approve would put Infowars’ intellectual property up for auction on Nov. 13 including its trademarks, copyrighted material, social media accounts and websites. Jones’ personal social media sites, including his account on the social platform X, which has 2.8 million followers, would not be included.

However, the trustee overseeing Jones’ bankruptcy case, Christopher Murray, said Tuesday that he may soon seek court permission to also liquidate Jones’ personal social media accounts and his other intellectual property — which Jones’ attorneys have opposed. That issue could develop into another court fight in the bankruptcy case. Murray also is expected to sell many of Jones’ personal assets.

The Sandy Hook families who won the Connecticut lawsuit want Jones to lose his personal social media accounts. Their lawyers further contend that the families should get a chunk of all of Jones’ future earnings to help pay off his more than $1 billion debt.

Radian Aerospace completes ground tests of prototype space plane

Radian Aerospace has moved one step closer to achieving the “holy grail” of spaceflight: a reusable space plane that can take-off from an airfield and land on a runway like a conventional airplane.

The startup just announced completion of a series of ground tests in Abu Dhabi earlier this summer.

The tests were completed with a sub-scale prototype flight vehicle that the company is calling PFV01.

The main purpose of the testing was to generate data on how the vehicle would fly and handle, and to compare this data to simulations the company’s been doing over the last several years.

While the vehicle did not fly, it did perform a series of small hops on the runway, executives told TechCrunch in a recent interview.

PFV01 is much smaller than the final vehicle at around 15 feet long, but the data still helps inform key pieces of the final design and flight control systems, like where the landing gear should be located, or where the center of gravity should be to maximize stability midair, cofounder CTO Livingston Holder explained.

“This vehicle gives us the ability to adjust the center of gravity forward and aft, up and down, it gives us the ability to adjust the location of the landing gear.

Those adjustments give us real world feedback into what our analytical data says,” he said.

“Wherever there’s ambiguity… that’s one of the things that the PFV really gives us the opportunity to do, is drive uncertainty down so that we have better fidelity with our analytical processes as we go faster with the vehicle and do more flights.”

The plan is for the Radian One space plane to take off from a roughly two mile-long rail sled, ignite engines on orbit, then return to Earth back on a normal runway.

The concept is considered a holy grail because removing the necessity for a launch vehicle makes space, in a way, as accessible to space vehicles as the upper atmosphere is to airplanes.

The economics are promising, too: a reusable space plane could take trips to and from space on a daily basis or even more frequently, and with better margins to boot.

It’s been tried before; one of the most notable examples is NASA’s X-33 program to develop a suborbital space plane. Holder led Boeing’s X-33 effort.

“The least interesting thing this system has the potential to do is launch satellites,” Radian cofounder and CRO Jeff Feige said.

“What’s really impressive about Radian is that it’s a system that can do a wide, wide range of missions so it basically accesses a much larger market than a traditional rocket.

Not only could you potentially launch something, but you can service it, you can recover it. We can bring entire payloads or satellites down from space.

We can carry people up. We can dip in the atmosphere and theoretically, either drop things or observe things on the planet. So there’s just a much wider range of capability.”

The design is dramatically different from a vertical rocket, and this means the development process differs as well, noted Feige:

“You have to retire a lot of risk early.” So while rocket companies must build full-scale vehicles, the stepwise fashion of spaceplane development more closely resembles how an airplane is developed.

The Seattle-based startup isn’t disclosing any technical specs of the tests, like the top speeds of the vehicle or how long it was taxiing for, but Holder did say PFV01 “reached its velocity for takeoff.”

Now the company will spend some time analyzing all the data it collected from the tests before embarking on a series of higher-speed taxi tests and the start of actual flight testing.

Parallel to that, the company will be working on getting regulatory approval to operate out of a different UAE-based airport and fly there.

Company executives say they are hoping to start full scale flights of the Radian One space plane in 2028.

The company has raised $32 million to date from investors including Fine Structure Ventures, EXOR, The Venture Collective, Helios Capital, SpaceFund, Gaingels, The Private Shares Fund, Explorer 1 Fund, and Type One Ventures.

A preliminary report on the July 13 assassination attempt on former President Trump from the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs ripped into newly revealed missteps that went into the Secret Service’s planning and execution of security at the event during which a spectator was killed, two others were seriously wounded and the GOP candidate was struck on the ear.

Among the key failures, an agent inexperienced with drone equipment called a toll-free tech support hotline for help after a request ahead of time for additional unmanned assets was denied, according to a preliminary summary of findings made public Wednesday. ==According to the committee, he had just an hour of informal training with the device.

“Multiple foreseeable and preventable planning and operational failures by USSS contributed to [Thomas] Crooks’ ability to carry out the assassination attempt of former President Trump on July 13,” the preliminary report read.“These included unclear roles and responsibilities, insufficient coordination with state and local law enforcement, the lack of effective communications, and inoperable C-UAS systems, among many others.”

“We have reviewed the interim report on the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.The weight of our mission is not lost on us and in this hyperdynamic threat environment, the U.S. Secret Service cannot fail. Many of the insights gained from the Senate report align with the findings from our mission assurance review and are essential to ensuring that what happened on July 13 never happens again,” U.S. Secret Service Chief of Communications Anthony Guglielmi responded Wednesday.

According to testimony from agents from Trump’s detail and the Pittsburgh field office, neither of them were aware at the time when, 27 minutes before the shooting, the Secret Service’s security room and counter-sniper team was informed that a suspicious person had been spotted near the AGR building with a range finder; the shooter eventually took position on the roof of that building.

“Shortly before shots were fired, a USSS counter sniper saw local law enforcement running toward the AGR building with their guns drawn, but he did not alert former President Trump’s protective detail to remove him from the stage,” the committee revealed in the 94-page report. “The USSS counter sniper told the Committee that while seeing officers with their guns drawn ‘elevated’ the threat level, the thought to notify someone to get Trump off the stage ‘did not cross [his] mind.’”

The fact that Secret Service counter snipers had been deployed at all was unique, according to the report. Their addition to the rally’s security plans had come in response to “credible intelligence” of a potential threat. Typically, an out-of-office candidate would not have a counter-sniper team before the party’s nominating convention, and the RNC did not begin until two days after the shooting.

Local law enforcement raised concernsahead of the rally about the AGR building across the field from where Trump would take the stage days before the rally,but its rooftop remained unsecured.

Advance agents on Trump’s detail had also requested additional resources ahead of time, including additional drone equipmentand additional counter-assault agents to act as liaisons with local SWAT teams.

“These requests were denied, at times without explanation,” the committee found.

Additionally, theagent in charge of drone equipment available on scene ran into technical difficulty that prevented them from flying the droneuntil after Crooks flew his own near the rally site.

The report delved deeper into Acting Director Ronald Rowe’s admission last week that communications shortcomings delayed vital information in the moments before the shooting.Secret Service members apparently faced a number of technical problems with their radios, and the special agent in charge of the Pittsburgh field office did not have a radioat all because he handed it to the lead advance agent on Trump’s detail.

“These requests were denied, at times without explanation,” the committee found.

Another key failure the committee criticized was the lack of a clear chain of command. Officials involved in scouting and planning for the rally “denied that they were individually responsible for planning or security failures and deflected blame,” according to the committee.

“I don’t approve anything,” the lead advance agent was quoted as telling senators. “I clearly just take the information that they [the USSS site agent and USSS site counterpart] have recommendedand put together with the other information that’s put together from the other advance entities, and those are all submitted to the field office and then submitted to the Trump detail, the candidate nominations operations, and then they go further to headquarters.”

The committee is recommending better coordination and clearer leadership, including the designation of a single person to approve security plans, functional communication between federal agents and their local counterparts, additional intelligence assets and other resources.

Local law enforcement assets stationed inside the AGR building were not tasked with securing its roof but rather with protecting the crowd, according to the committee. Local sharpshooters inside could have seen the area of the roof from where Crooks opened fire, but they would have needed to go into a different room without a clear view of the crowd.

The July 13 attack on a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, was the first of two attempts on Trump’s life over the summer. A counter sniper returned fire and killed suspect Matthew Thomas Crooks, 20.

In the second attempt, 58-year-old suspect Ryan Routh was arrested on Sept. 15 after a Secret Service agent saw someone pointing a rifle out of the tree line at the edge of the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, as the former president was golfing there.

US Space Force partners with India to open a microchip factory for next-gen tech

The United States Space Force is partnering with the Indian government to establish a new factory that will manufacture semiconductors, which are microchips essential for building next-generation technologies.

Space-based sensors and spacecraft (not to mention nearly all computers, TVs, mobile phones, cars, game consoles, etc.) rely on semiconductors.

The integrated circuits are perhaps more commonly referred to as microchips, or simply "chips."

They are the "brains" that nearly every modern electronic device relies on. However, for years, the world has faced a global semiconductor supply shortage — and that shortage peaked in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, U.S. Space Force leaders have been hammering home the fact that the service needs new cutting-edge technologies in order to out-compete its competitors.

So, to help the U.S. develop and acquire those technologies, the White House and the government of India signed the "U.S.-India Comprehensive Global and Strategic Partnership" this week, part of which includes a "strategic technology partnership" between two Indian technology firms and the U.S. Space Force that will help establish a new semiconductor factory.

The factory will develop chips for use in "advanced sensing, communication, and power electronics for national security, next generation telecommunications, and green energy applications," according to a White House statement, which calls the agreement the "defining partnership of the 21st century."

Specifically, the factory will be aimed at developing infrared, gallium nitride and silicon carbide chips, which are some of the most advanced forms of semiconductors.

Gallium nitride (or GaN) chips can be incorporated into spacecraft with innovative instruments like synthetic aperture radar, for instance, and used to create communication systems with "five- to ten-fold signal strength and data transmission rates" compared to previous technologies, according to the European Space Agency.

Beyond in-space sensing and communications, GaN technologies are also being incorporated into terrestrial radar systems and electronic warfare platforms, which are used to disrupt, deny, or degrade the use of radio, radar, infrared or other frequency bands of the electromagnetic spectrum.

The U.S. Space Force has been testing portable satellite jammers in recent years and even creating units dedicated to targeting other nations' spacecraft with electronic warfare systems.

As the service looks to expand its ability to project force and protect its own units from such attacks, the need for new technologies that depend on a steady supply chain of next-generation semiconductors will only grow.

The need for new cutting-edge technologies isn't the only reason the U.S. Space Force and White House are partnering with India to develop a new semiconductor factory.

Currently, the world's largest producer of semiconductors is Taiwan, but geopolitical tensions with China have been compelling Western nations to seek new supply chains elsewhere.

China claims Taiwan as part of its own, and fears of a Chinese invasion of the island nation have been rising for years.

To that end, President Biden signed the CHIPS Act in 2022, which provided $52.7 billion of American investment in semiconductor manufacturing and research to "keep the United States the leader in the industries of tomorrow."

This week's partnership with India stems from that act.

Chinese government-linked hackers have gained access to a handful of U.S. internet service providers in recent months trying to gather sensitive information, The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The report said a new group called Salt Typhoon was behind the hacking campaign that is linked to China, according to U.S. investigators' findings.

Through Salt Typhoon's campaign, actors linked to China burrowed into America's broadband networks and aimed to establish a foothold within the infrastructure of cable and broadband providers that would allow them to access data stored by telecommunications companies or launch a damaging cyberattack, the WSJ report said.

Last week, U.S. officials said they had stopped a Chinese hacking group called Flax Typhoon and disrupted their network of more than 200,000 routers, cameras, and other internet-connected consumer devices that served as an entry point into U.S. networks. Early in the year, a group called Volt Typhoon from China was also stopped from infiltrating into critical U.S. infrastructure systems.

Free Starlink Wi-Fi now on most Hawaiian Airlines transpacific fleet

Hawaiian Airlines announced Sept. 24 the start of free Starlink Wi-Fi on most of its transpacific fleet flying to and from Hawaii.

The company said it has finished installing antennas for SpaceX’s low Earth orbit (LEO) network across the 42 Airbus aircraft in its fleet — 24 A330s and 18 A321Neos — after debuting the broadband service early this year on the airline’s first connected flight.

Marissa Villegas, a spokesperson for the airline, said the company plans to connect its two Boeing 787-9 planes to Starlink, and 10 more 787-9s on order to arrive by 2027, over the coming years but did not include details.

Hawaiian does not plan to bring inflight connectivity to the smaller 19 Boeing 717 planes in its fleet, used for short-range, high-frequency trips throughout the Hawaiian Islands.

The company was the first major airline to announce a deal with Starlink in April 2022 for a service it touts as indistinguishable from low-latency internet access at home.

While Starlink has since won a handful of similar deals with small airlines and business jet providers, the company landed its next major aviation deal Sept. 13 with plans to connect more than 1,000 planes in United Airlines’ international fleet.

Expansion mode

Nick Galano, director of Starlink sales and partnerships and its head of aviation, said the company had around 2,500 aircraft under contract Sept. 17 during World Satellite Business Week in Paris.

Starlink’s network currently has around 300 terabits per second of capacity, Galano added, which continues to increase amid SpaceX’s aggressive constellation launch schedule.

This is“probably over 100 times what all the legacy systems have provided,” he told the conference, opening up new use cases and applications to the entire aircraft.

Previously, he said airlines had to monitor how many people were using the capacity and for what applications. “Now that constraint is gone,” he said.

According to astrophysicist and space watcher Jonathan McDowell, more than 6,400 Starlink satellites are currently in orbit.

While Galano said Starlink equipment can now be installed on an aircraft in less than a day, he called for more standardization to streamline and accelerate a certification process that is holding back deployments.

LEO diversity

Hawaiian Airlines recently completed its $1.9 billion sale to Alaska Airlines, a larger carrier in the middle of upgrading planes with enhanced connectivity services from Starlink aviation competitor Intelsat.

Intelsat provides inflight connectivity from its fleet of geostationary satellites and capacity leased from Eutelsat’s OneWeb LEO network.

Starlink and Intelsat will be the satellite connectivity partners for the combined fleet, Villegas said via email, adding: “We are actively evaluating options for future fleet growth and evolution of our inflight WiFi.”

Treatment options are limited by the size, weight and training required to operate medical technology commonly used on Earth.

James Webb Space Telescope Creates Three-Dimensional Map of Planet’s ‘Puffed-Up’ Atmosphere

Scientists studying the puffed-up atmosphere of exoplanet WASP-107b say the advanced instruments of NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope are helping them create a three-dimensional map of the unusual atmosphere in stunning detail.

Originally spotted in 2017 by researchers from the Wide Angle Search for Planets (WASP-South) international consortium, the warm-Neptune gas giant has perplexed astronomers due to its puffy atmosphere.

“Our previous findings showed that WASP-107b is extraordinarily puffed up, almost as if the planet had popped like a kernel of popcorn under its own heat,” explained study co-author Luis Welbanks, a 51 Pegasi b Fellow at Arizona State University’s School of Earth and Space Exploration.

WASP-107b orbits a relatively small, cool star roughly 210 light years from Earth.

The planet also has about 80% of the volume of Jupiter but only 10% of its mass, making it an unusual find for exoplanet hunters.

Due to its proximity to its host star, WASP-107b completes an orbit every 5.72 days.

It is also tidally locked, meaning half of the planet is in permanent sunlight while the other is in permanent darkness.

WASP-107b made headlines in 2023 when researchers detected water vapor, sand clouds, and sulfur dioxide in its atmosphere.

Led by Matthew Murphy, a graduate student at the University of Arizona’s Steward Observatory, the research team trained JWST’s robust suite of instruments on the planet’s atmosphere.

Several observations were conducted when the planet passed between Earth and its host star, allowing scientists to measure and characterize the starlight as it passed through its atmosphere and create a three-dimensional atmospheric map.

“With JWST, we are getting a clearer picture of what’s happening in its atmosphere in three dimensions, and it turns out there’s even more to munch on!” said Welbanks.

Perhaps the team’s most significant finding is a pronounced asymmetry in the atmosphere between the eastern and western halves of the planet.

According to the study, this variance “suggests differences in the properties between the two sides of the exoplanet.”

“The source of this asymmetry is intriguing,” said Associate Professor Michael Line from Arizona State University, who contributed to the research.

“While our initial analysis suggests that the asymmetries may be due to one limb of the planet being more cloudy than the other, this could also be linked to how heat is transported across the planet’s atmosphere.”

“It’s as if one side of WASP-107b is cooking faster than the other!” he added.

Before JWST, this finding would have been virtually impossible. However, the sophisticated nature of the telescope’s instruments allowed the researchers to isolate and examine the light spectrum data from the eastern and western edges of the planet’s atmosphere separately. According to the researchers, this feat has never been achieved in this detail.

“The high precision of JWST’s instruments is like having a magnifying glass for planets,” said Welbanks.

“We can now look at specific processes happening on each side of WASP-107b’s atmosphere, giving us valuable insights into how climate works in these extreme conditions.”

Murphy agreed, noting the difficulty in studying ‘intermediate’ planets whose size rests somewhere between the planets in our solar system and the hottest, most massive exoplanets ever discovered has resulted in very little data.

“Traditionally, our observing techniques don’t work as well for these intermediate planets, so there’s been a lot of exciting open questions that we can finally start to answer,” he said.

“For example, some of our models told us that a planet like WASP-107b shouldn’t have this asymmetry at all – so we’re already learning something new.”

Space startup seeks to solve solar power's daylight problem

Solar power has always had one pesky limitation: It needs daylight.

But what if it didn't?

State of play: That's the question being asked by Reflect Orbital, a startup that recently raised $6.5 million led by Sequoia Capital.

The big idea: Build and deploy a low-orbit constellation of Mylar "mirrors" that would send sunlight to solar installations in places that are still 90 minutes before sunrise or 90 minutes after sunset.

Once low-light minutes are included, this could mean an extra four hours of power generation.

Why it matters: The world needs more renewable power, particularly with the rise of data centers.

This could help eat into that new demand without needing to build much new physical infrastructure, which consumes both money and space.

Catch up quick: If this feels a bit familiar, you might have seen a viral video that Reflect Orbital CEO Ben Nowack (ex-Zipline) posted back in March.

And also that one of the responses, shortly after it was posted, came from Sequoia Capital partner Shaun Maguire, who wrote: "Very clever insights."

Maguire tells me that the general concept of space-based solar has been around for at least 15 years, but that it wasn't pursued because of the on-ground capital expenditures that would have been required.

Now, however, there are so many solar stations on Earth that a company like Reflect Orbital is viable.

Well, after figuring out things like how to unfold the mirrors, steering, computation, and making a solar sail to power the electronics.

He adds that there are understandable concerns that the tech could brighten dark areas on the ground, but insists that Reflect Orbital's tech works more like a laser beam than a flash light (i.e., very little diffusion).

Deal details: Other Reflect Orbital investors include Starship Ventures, two Zipline execs (Keller Rinaudo Cliffton and Keenan Wyrobek), and Baiju Bhatt (the Robinhood co-founder who's working on a separate space-based energy project).

Zoom in: The company recently put out a "request for sunlight," and claims to have received over 10,000 inquiries. Including from some power plants.

It's also received a lot of inbound from venture capital firms.

The original plan was to launch a proof-of-concept via the $6.5 million, but the massive "RFS" response may lead it to accelerate both its fundraising and deployment plans.

The bottom line: The days are getting shorter. For now.

NEW: In a multi day operation on Nantucket Island,ICE’s Boston office announces they arrested four illegal aliens who are charged with raping or sexually assaulting Nantucket children or residents - all of whom were released from local custody despite the serious charges.

They include:

Elmer Sola, a Salvadoran illegal alien who entered the U.S. as a gotaway and was charged last month with three counts of aggravated child rape. The victim was a Nantucket child.

Bryan Daniel Aldana-Arevalo, another Salvadoran illegal alien who entered the U.S. as a gotaway and was charged in July with raping a Nantucket child.

Gean Do Amaral Belafronte, a Brazilian illegal alien who entered the U.S. as a gotaway and was charged in June with sexually assaulting a Nantucket resident.

Felix Alberto Perez-Gomez, a previously deported Guatemalan illegal alien who re-entered the U.S. as a gotaway and was charged last month with sexually assaulting a Nantucket resident.

All four of these alleged sex offenders were gotaways, ICE says. They were all arrested by ICE on Nantucket - in sanctuary state Massachusetts.

According to internal CBP data, there have been over 1.9 million known gotaways who successfully evaded apprehension & snuck into the U.S. during the Biden administration, tracked via cameras, sensors, footsign, etc.

Many Americans correlate national defense with the service members who wear the uniform. Under Secretary of the Air Force Melissa Dalton challenged audiences at the 2024 Women in Defense National Conference on Sept. 24, to think a step further.

“I think of defense as a triangle … it doesn’t exist unless it has three sides,” Dalton said. “In this case, defense comprises our men and women in uniform, those who serve in the career civil service, and the defense industrial base.”

Dalton pointed out “American national security simply does not exist without that triangle intact,” and sufficiently representing women is part of that.

“Much like a builder would not use only half of the lumber or nails required for a house, the defense triangle is fragile if only half the population is adequately represented in it,” Dalton said.

“Our female Airmen and Guardians are operationally effective, they are resilient, and they are downright lethal — when we empower them to be,” Dalton said.

Dalton emphasized women are one of the U.S.’ competitive advantages as she took attendees on a journey through multiple Airmen and Guardians’ careers and their impacts on real-world operations.

These anecdotes included stories like A-10C Thunderbolt II pilot retired U.S. Air Force Col. Kim Campbell’s harrowing landing near Iraq after her aircraft took heavy enemy fire during a close air support mission; this occurred a full 12 years before the Department of Defense opened all combat roles to women.

Or the amazing story of retired U.S. Air Force Maj. Heather Penney, a woman who upheld the Air Force’s core value of service before self as she flew her F-16 Fighting Falcon without munitions with full understanding that her mission was to use her aircraft to bring down the remaining hijacked airplane on 9/11 – the hijacked airplane crashed before she could execute that mission.

Or the quick thinking and decision making of U.S. Space Force Maj. Justine Pescetello-Parr when she and her team detected over a dozen intermediate range ballistic missiles headed for Al Asad Air Base in Iraq.

The speed with which they sent the “just-in-time” warning saved hundreds of American lives when the missiles struck the base.

“Stories like these exist for several reasons,” Dalton said. “First is a passion to serve, common to all these women.

But second is the hard work being done by organizations within the Department to find barriers to service for our service members, groups like the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in Armed Services, or within my own department, the Air Force Barrier Analysis Working Groups like the Women's Initiatives Team.”

An image of the unidentified object shot down over Canada's Yukon territory in February 2023 has been obtained by CTVNews.ca.

Released through a Canadian freedom of information request, the grainy image appears to be a photocopy of an email printout.

Heavily redacted documents show how the image was approved for public distribution within days of the headline-grabbing incident, but then held back after a public affairs official expressed concerns that releasing it "may create more questions/confusion."

CTVNews.ca has requested a higher resolution copy.

What did Norad shoot down?

A U.S. F-22 fighter jet shot down the object on Feb. 11, 2023, shortly after it entered Canadian airspace in the Yukon territory, which borders Alaska.

It was one of three unidentified aerial objects(opens in a new tab) blasted out of the sky that month following the high-profile Feb. 4, 2023 downing of an apparent Chinese surveillance balloon(opens in a new tab).

Shot down over Alaska, Yukon and Lake Huron between Feb. 10 and 12, 2023, the three objects were reportedly much smaller than the towering Chinese balloon.

At the time, officials described the Yukon object(opens in a new tab) as a "suspected balloon" that was "cylindrical" in shape. A reported Pentagon memo(opens in a new tab) said it appeared to be a "small, metallic balloon with a tethered payload below it."

Released as part of the freedom of information request package, an email from a Canadian brigadier-general offered what they described as the "best description that we have" of the Yukon object.

"Visual - a cylindrical object," they wrote in an Feb. 11, 2023, email. "Top quarter is metallic, remainder white. 20-foot wire hanging below with a package of some sort suspended from it."

The image appears to have been taken from an aircraft below it, although that has not been confirmed.

Why was the image never released?

The image of the Yukon object was distributed internally on Feb. 14, 2023. The next morning, it was declared unclassified and approved for public release.

In a partially redacted email thread, additional footage is mentioned. Canada's former top soldier and previous Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Wayne Eyre(opens in a new tab) even suggested using the declassified picture in an upcoming social media post.

"Attached is an image approved to be released," a Feb. 15, 2023, email to Canadian military leaders says. "We are looking at getting a better one to send to you."

But despite a flurry of emails to clear the image for public release, the Department of National Defence's acting assistant deputy minister for public affairs soon poured cold water on the idea.

"Should the image be released, it would be via the [Canadian Armed Forces] social media accounts," the public affairs official wrote on Feb. 15, 2023.

"Given the current public environment and statements related to the object being benign, releasing the image may create more questions/confusion, regardless of the text that will accompany the post."

Later that afternoon, Gen. Eyre's public affairs officer added that the image would be held back "pending U.S. engagement."

The photo was never released.

Reached Monday morning, Canada's Department of National Defence said it would not be able to immediately respond to a request for comment.

Emphasizing that it was declassified and already approved for public release, CTVNews.ca has requested the original image file.

"In a very large organization such as the military, different elements and even different people may have different views on what information can be made public," Iain Boyd, director of the Center for National Security Initiatives at the University of Colorado, told CTVNews.ca.

"Ultimately, the public affairs office has responsibility to vet all external communications."
