Graphene at 20: still no sign of the promised space elevator, but here’s how this wonder material is quietly changing the world

Twenty years ago this October, two physicists at the University of Manchester, Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov, published a groundbreaking paper on the “electric field effect in atomically thin carbon films”.

Their work described the extraordinary electronic properties of graphene, a crystalline form of carbon equivalent to a single layer of graphite, just one atom thick.

Around that time, I started my doctorate at the University of Surrey. Our team specialised in the electronic properties of carbon.

Carbon nanotubes were the latest craze, which I was happily following. One day, my professor encouraged a group of us to travel to London to attend a talk by a well-known science communicator from the University of Manchester. This was Andre Geim.

We were not disappointed. He was inspiring for us fresh-faced PhD students, incorporating talk of wacky Friday afternoon experiments with levitating frogs, before getting on to atomically thin carbon.

All the same, we were sceptical about this carbon concept. We couldn’t quite believe that a material effectively obtained from pencil lead with sticky tape was really what it claimed to be. But we were wrong.

The work was quickly copied and reproduced by scientists across the globe. New methods for making this material were devised. Incredible claims about its properties made it sound like something out of a Stan Lee comic.

Stronger than steel, highly flexible, super-slippery and impermeable to gases. A better electronic conductor than copper and a better thermal conductor than diamond, as well as practically invisible and displaying a host of exotic quantum properties.

Graphene was hailed as a revolutionary material, promising ultra-fast electronics, supercomputers and super-strong materials. More fantastical claims have included space elevators, solar sails, artificial retinas, even invisibility cloaks.

Just six years after their initial work, Geim and Novoselov were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics, further fuelling the enthusiasm around this wonder stuff. Since then, hundreds of thousands of academic papers have been published on graphene and related materials.

But not everyone is on board. Skim through the comments section of any popular article on the material, and you’ll quickly find the sceptics.

We have endured decades of empty promises about the real-world impact of graphene, they complain. Where are the game-changing products to enrich our lives or save the world from climate change, they ask.

So has graphene been a resounding success or a damp squib? As is so often the case, the reality is somewhere in between.

In terms of public perception, it’s fair to say that graphene has been held to an impossible standard.

The popular media can certainly exaggerate science stories for clicks, but academics – including myself – are not immune from over-egging or speculating about their pet projects either.

I’d argue this can even be useful, helping to drive new technologies forward. Equally, though, there can be a backlash when progress looks disappointing.

Having said that, disruptive technologies such as cars, television or plastic all required decades of development. Graphene is still a newcomer in the grand scheme of things, so it’s far too early to reach any conclusions about its impact.

What has quietly occurred is a steady integration of graphene into numerous practical applications. Much of this is thanks to the Graphene Flagship, a major European research initiative coordinated by Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden.

This aims to bring graphene and related materials from academic research to real-world commercial applications, and more than 90 products have been developed over the past decade as a result.

Fire training at Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station

Updated: Sep 23, 2024 / 09:14 AM MDT

Peterson Space Force Base said that from Monday, Sept. 23, to Tuesday, Sept. 24, fire training exercises will occur at Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station from 9 a.m. to noon.

During the exercises, Peterson Space Force Base said those living nearby may see increased activity on the installation, including visible smoke, fire, and the presence of emergency vehicles.

Peterson Space Force Base said these are controlled exercises and there is no cause for alarm, as significant safety controls are in place.

Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station may have temporary disruptions with traffic and Peterson recommends drivers plan accordingly.

Another fire exercise is planned for Friday, Oct. 4.

US Sends More Troops To Mideast As Israel Strikes Beirut, Hezbollah Targets Haifa

Update(1312ET): For the second time since Friday, Israel has launched a major strike on the southern Beirut neighborhood of Dahiyam, in what the IDF says was a targeted strike on senior Hezbollah leader Ali Karaki. In last Friday's strike several Hezbollah commanders were taken out, in an attack which also left many civilian casualties. Karaki's fate is unclear at this point. He's widely reported to be Hezbollah's head of its southern front operations.

This has been the heaviest day of fighting in nearly a year since Oct.7, with the IDF saying by Monday evening it has struck about 800 targets in Lebanon today alone. "The IDF is striking to remove threats to Israeli civilians and degrade Hezbollah's terrorist infrastructure and capabilities," a statement said. Israel has also just declared an emergency "special situation" for the entire country as this looks to be the start of all-out war against Hezbollah in Lebanon. The total Lebanese death toll is fast approaching 300.

The FBI said that when its agents attempted to interview Routh after he was detained on Sept. 15, he invoked his right to an attorney. Routh has not entered a plea.

Zelensky Uses US Trip To Attack JD Vance

Just ahead of his trip to the United States where he's expected to meet with President Biden later this week, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky gave an interview to The New Yorker wherein he mounted a risky and unexpected direct attack on Trump's pick for Vice President, Ohio Senator JD Vance.

Zelensky told The New Yorker in response to Trump's promises to negotiate an end to the Ukraine war that "Trump doesn’t really know how to stop the war even if he might think he knows how."

"With this war, oftentimes, the deeper you look at it the less you understand," Zelensky contined.

The Ukrainian leader was then asked about Trump's VP pick, to which the reply was "He is too radical." Here is how that section of the interview began…

New Yorker: Vance has come out with a more precise plan to—

Zelensky: To give up our territories.

New Yorker: Your words, not mine. But, yes, that’s the gist of it.

Zelensky: His message seems to be that Ukraine must make a sacrifice.

And Zelensky continued: "This brings us back to the question of the cost and who shoulders it. The idea that the world should end this war at Ukraine’s expense is unacceptable."

"This would be an awful idea, if a person were actually going to carry it out, to make Ukraine shoulder the costs of stopping the war by giving up its territories," Zelensky said.

He asserted that this wouldn't bring an end to the fighting regardless and that Trump and Vance's vows to end the war is "just sloganeering".

Zelensky then suggested that it is "dangerous" for men which such talking points to rise to power and that they could spark global war through irresponsible policies. He was then quoted in The New Yorker as follows:

[Vance and others who share his views] should clearly understand that the moment they start trading on our territory is the moment they start pawning America’s interests elsewhere: the Middle East, for example, as well as Taiwan and the U.S. relations with China. Whichever President or Vice-President raises this prospect—that ending the war hinges on cementing the status quo, with Ukraine simply giving up its land—should be held responsible for potentially starting a global war. Because such a person would be implying that this kind of behavior is acceptable.

I don’t take Vance’s words seriously, because, if this were a plan, then America is headed for global conflict. It will involve Israel, Lebanon, Iran, Taiwan, China, as well as many African countries.

He then in a patronizing way told "Mr. Vance" to "read up on the history of the Second World War" while suggesting that his plan with Russia is tantamount to 'appeasing' Hitler.

We expect that the Trump team isn't going to take too kindly to Zelensky's attack on both Trump and Vance.

The rhetoric from the interview specifically in regards to Vance was much more direct than usual.

Typically Zelensky has appeared more cautious with his criticisms, not wishing to offend a potential future Republican administration; however, that caution seems to have gone out the window.

The uptick in violence followed the capture on July 25 of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, 76, in El Paso, Texas.

Zambada has since claimed that he was ambushed and taken to the United States by Joaquín Guzmán López, one of the sons of former Sinaloa cartel leader Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, who is serving a life sentence in a U.S. prison.

The two factions at war are the MZ/MF, which is loyal to El Mayo, and the El Chapitos, aligned with Guzmán López and El Chapo’s other sons.

During a press briefing on Sept. 19, López Obrador—who is often referred to by his initials AMLO—described the operation to capture El Mayo as “totally illegal.”

‘Instability’ in Sinaloa

He said of the U.S. government, “If we are now facing instability and clashes in Sinaloa, it is because they made that decision.”

López Obrador said there “cannot be a cooperative relationship“ between the United States and Mexico ”if they take unilateral decisions” such as going ahead with the capture of El Mayo without informing the Mexican government.

On Sept. 13, López Obrador asked Sinaloa’s warring factions to act “responsibly” and said he believed the cartels would listen to him.

But the killings have not abated, and many parents have kept their children home from school in Culiacan for fear they will get caught up in the intra-cartel violence.

Businesses are closing early, and few people are venturing out after dark in the city.

On Sept. 17, Mexican Defense Secretary Luis Cresencio Sandoval said two members of the military were among those killed in the fighting, which broke out on Sept. 9.

About 2,000 security personnel have been sent to Sinaloa and the neighboring state of Durango to patrol areas seen as the cartel’s strongholds.

‘Hugs Not Bullets’ Strategy

Unlike some of his predecessors, López Obrador has refused to confront Mexico’s drug cartels and has referred to his strategy as “hugs not bullets.”

Mexican prosecutors have even said they are considering bringing treason charges against those involved in the capture of El Mayo, whose cartel has killed thousands of people over the past two decades.

López Obrador is Mexico’s outgoing president, but his successor, Claudia Sheinbaum, is from the same Morena party. She will be inaugurated in January.

López Obrador’s relationship with the Biden administration has steadily deteriorated. Last month, he said he was putting relations with the United States and Canadian embassies “on pause” after their ambassadors criticized his controversial judicial reforms.

The U.S. ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, said one element of the reforms—the election of judges by popular vote—constituted “a major risk to the functioning of Mexico’s democracy.”

The U.S. government has not responded to López Obrador’s comments.

However, on Sept. 13, the U.S. Department of Justice published a statement in which Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said: “We allege that El Mayo built, and for decades led, the Sinaloa cartel’s network of manufacturers, assassins, traffickers, and money launderers responsible for kidnapping and murdering people in both the United States and Mexico, and importing lethal quantities of fentanyl, heroin, meth, and cocaine into the United States.

“Now, El Mayo joins the many other Sinaloa cartel leaders who have faced charges in an American courtroom for the immeasurable harm they have inflicted on families and communities across our country.”

'Alien ships are stalking nuclear sites' and UFO expert has some wild theories

UFOs spotted hovering near nukes could be aliens attempting to save us from Armageddon, an expert has suggested.

Renowned researcher Robert L Hastings said that if extra-terrestrial beings existed, they seemed to be “greatly interested in our nuclear weapons”.

While some have claimed these sightings could be reconnaissance for a potential invasion, he believes there are a few different theories.

For his new book UFOs and Nukes, first reported by the MailOnline, Hastings has interviewed more than 150 US military personnel.

He wrote that sightings have been reported over and over again since the first atomic bomb was tested in 1945.

And far from being restricted to North America, he said UFOs had also appeared in nuclear facilities across Russia and India.

It all adds up to a picture of extra-terrestrials keeping a close eye on our nuclear weapons sites.

However, according to Hastings, investigators have been prevented from properly probing the potential alien cases – because they have been classified as top secret.

The author wrote: “A public, grassroots effort must be made in the interim to understand… the nature and intentions of those who pilot the UFOs.”

Hastings added there are several theories as to why UFOs are attracted to dangerous nuclear sites.

Aliens could be here to warn us of the catastrophic risks of nuclear warfare or even to protect the planet for their own scientific experiments, he theorised.

In fact, it could be that the devices are not extra-terrestrial at all. According to Hastings, the more dull explanation is that the UFO sightings are just foreign nations spying on military targets.

Hastings added: “For whatever reason, those piloting the UFOs – whose origin and intentions were unknown – appeared to be very interested in the facilities associated with America's atomic weapons program.”

It comes after we reported a former Pentagon UFO hunter had shared fears aliens could be planning to invade.

Luis Elizondo said flying saucers behaved in the same way as our own armed forces when preparing for war.

“Everything we’ve seen in the 20th Century could be a prelude to invasion,” he said. “It is a possibility that we cannot ignore.”

FBI ‘completely stonewalling’ Trump assassination attempt task force, member says: ‘Not been forthcoming’

With few details still known about Thomas Matthew Crooks, the would-be assassin of former President Trump, onemember of the House task force probing the assassination attempt is saying the FBI has not been forthcoming with their investigation.

Rep. Mike Waltz, R-Fla., a member of the Bipartisan Assassination Task Force, appeared on “Fox News Sunday” with fellow task force member Rep. Madeleine Dean, D-Penn., to discuss the group’s investigation into the US Secret Service’s failures during the July rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where Crooks fired a series of bullets from a rooftop that was left unchecked.

While Waltz and Dean both said the failures appear to rest with USSS, which has since taken full responsibility, Waltz appreciated that the agency has been forthcoming with the investigation,whereas the FBI – over two months after the assassination attempt – has not.

“The Secret Service is being forthcoming about its failures in communication guidance to locals having appropriate command posts. The FBI, on the other hand, is completely stonewalling this task force,” Waltz said. “It has not been forthcoming.”

In July, FBI Director Christopher Wray initially told House lawmakers that “there’s some question about whether or not it’s a bullet or shrapnel that, you know, hit his ear.”

Two days later, the bureau issued a statement saying: “What struck former President Trump in the ear was a bullet, whether whole or fragmented into smaller pieces, fired from the deceased subject’s rifle.”

Waltz said he’d like to see Wray and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas hold a press conference like the one USSS recently held.

“We still know virtually nothing about Crooks, the shooter in Butler, about his encrypted accounts, how he learned to build those IEDs,” the congressman said.

On Thursday, Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wisc., ranking member of the HSGAC Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations,said that what few documents the FBI provided lawmakers were “heavily redacted.”

“I’ve never seen this,” Johnson told reporters of the redactions.

The July 13 Trump rally shooting has heightened scrutiny of USSS, and prompted conversations about whether elected officials are being sufficiently kept safe in today’s hyper-partisan environment.

Waltz said another point of “mounting bipartisan frustration” with the FBI involvedIran, specifically the regime’s multiple ongoing plots to kill Trump and its hacking of Trump campaign information, which it then shared with the Biden-Harris campaign.

“And when asked about it behind closed doors, the FBI would not give us any information to the Intelligence Committee,” Waltz said. “Just this week. It’s completely unacceptable and we need to issue those subpoenas.”

Dean added that it “makes sense” for the task force to investigate the second apparent assassination attempt against Trump that occurred at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Monday, and condemned all political violence.

“I want to set a baseline, which is that political violence has no place in this country,” the congresswoman said.

Trump slams Nebraska GOP senator for killing change to state's electoral vote system

McDonnell released a statement earlier Monday opposing a potential change in the method for the current election cycle, which would have changed Nebraska into a winner-take-all state. Nebraska is currently one of two states that awards the votes based on congressional districts.

Former President Donald Trump on Monday afternoon slammed Nebraska Republican state Sen. Mike McDonnell for stopping Trump and his allies from attempting to change the way the mid-western state awards its electoral votes.

McDonnell released a statement earlier Monday opposing a potential change in the method for the current election cycle, which would have changed Nebraska into a winner-take-all state. Nebraska is currently one of two states that awards the votes based on congressional districts.

Trump and his allies have tried to change the method so he would win all five of the state's electoral college points instead of the predicted four. Omaha usually votes Democrat. But Republican Gov. Jim Pillen said he would not call for a special session of the state legislature unless all 33 GOP state senators promised to pass it.

“I would like to thank Governor Jim Pillen of Nebraska for trying to help the Republican Party simplify the complexity of the State’s Electoral Map. It would have been better, and far less expensive, for everyone!" Trump posted to Truth Social. “Unfortunately, a Democrat turned Republican(?) State Senator named Mike McDonnell decided, for no reason whatsoever, to get in the way of a great Republican, common sense, victory. Just another ‘Grandstander!’”

Although McDonnell opposed the change for the current election cycle, he did suggest that the state legislature send the topic of changing the electoral votes to state residents through a constitutional amendment.

“Elections should be an opportunity for all voters to be heard, no matter who they are, where they live, or what party they support,” McDonnell said in his statement. “After deep consideration, it is clear to me that right now, 43 days from Election Day, is not the moment to make this change.”

The Nebraska Republican resides in the second district in Nebraska, which is based in Omaha and has split from the other four congressional districts in two of the four previous elections. Trump won the district in 2016, but lost it to President Joe Biden in 2020. The district also voted Republican in 2012, but Democrat in 2008.
