GM will pay $146M in penalties because 5.9M older vehicles emit excess carbon dioxide
General Motors will pay nearly $146 million in penalties to the federal government because 5.9 million of its older vehicles do not comply with emissions and fuel economy standards.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a statement Wednesday that certain GM vehicles from the 2012 through 2018 model years did not comply with federal fuel economy requirements.
The penalty comes after the Environmental Protection Agency said its testing showed the GM pickup trucks and SUVs emit over 10% more carbon dioxide on average than GM’s initial compliance testing claimed.
The EPA says the vehicles will remain on the road and cannot be repaired.

A former engineer at a U.S. military air logistics center has been charged with making false statements and obstructing justice during the criminal investigation into a 2017 military plane crash in Mississippi that killed all 16 service members aboard, prosecutors said Wednesday.
Fifteen Marines and one Navy corpsman were killed July 10, 2017, when the Marine Corps KC-130T transport plane broke into pieces in the sky and slammed into a soybean field near Itta Bena, Mississippi.
James Michael Fisher, 67, was arrested Tuesday after a federal grand jury in northern Mississippi indicted him, according to a news release from U.S. Attorney Clay Joyner.
The release said Fisher is a former lead propulsion engineer at the Warner Robins Air Logistics Complex in Warner Robins, Georgia. Fisher, who now lives in Portugal, made an initial court appearance in Jacksonville, Florida.

Meet Matt Croyle.
He is an elected official in Pennsylvania.
Even worse, he’s a state constable.
After being exposed for posting threatening messages about Trump supporters, he deleted his X account.
I went to his Facebook, where he’s still active,
& found a post where he wished an assassination attempt against Trump.
I did some more digging & it appears he’s a fan of democrat Governor Shapiro, too.
Spoke with the Pennsylvania Constable office & the Oil City Police Department, as well as sent an email w/ the threatening messages.
Perhaps, he deserves a Secret Service visit, too.
It would be a shame if this went viral.
