“Needs to go viral, urgent cares are becoming one of the most dangerous places in the US health care system, and I'm about to tell you why. Hi. My name is Lindsey. I've been a nurse for the last 10 years and a nurse practitioner for the last 5 years, and I'm here to spill the tea:

So many urgent cares are going towards a policy, which is that regardless of what medical condition a patient comes in with, that they need to be checked in and triaged and evaluated by the provider, which sounds great in theory, but let me paint you a picture.

Say, an older gentleman walks in with confusion, slurred speech, and facial drooping on one side. Normally, the front staff would notify me, hey. We think this patient is possibly having a stroke. Can you come and take a look? I would go up to them.

I'd say, hey. I'm really concerned for you. Let me call 911 so you can get to the ER and get the care that you need that an urgent care can't provide. But instead, this policy binds a provider's hands. So the nurse practitioner, doctor, or PA who is there at that urgent care is unable to do so.

They are now requiring that they are checked in, triaged, and evaluated by them before they're sent to the ER, even though the provider already knows they're going to the ER. The problem is this patient could be sitting there waiting for 30, 40, 50 minutes or longer because that provider may be with another patient doing a laceration pair or an IED, which is completely appropriate and completely treatable in urgent care. But in the meantime, the clock is ticking, and this patient is literally losing minutes on what is the difference between possibly life and death and good outcomes and bad outcomes.

And this all stems from the fact that health care administrators and their corporate greed has grown so large that they care more about a yacht than they do about caring for patients in the way that they should be cared for.

Because this policy is about ensuring that they get the money from that patient going into the urgent care as opposed to the patient being transferred to a place where they can be treated appropriately.

So be careful out there, y'all. If you have something like, you know, stroke symptoms, chest pain, or severe abdominal pain, please don't waste your time nor give your money to the corporate greedy buzzards who are more interested in filling their pocket than they are helping you and making sure you or your loved one gets the care that they deserve.”

If his reports are accurate, the CIA stepped in to cover up the criminal activity of the Finders in the initial 1987 investigation, with the agency implicitly claiming association with the cult by rendering the issue “an internal matter.” This would link the CIA with evidence of organized child trafficking, child abuse and allegations of ritual abuse and mind control.

The head of the United Nations refugee agency says he understands that the Biden administration enacted new restrictions on asylum-seekers entering the United States, but cautioned that some aspects of the executive order may violate refugee protection required in international law.

Filippo Grandi, the U.N. high commissioner for refugees, spoke to The Associated Press as his agency issued its annual “Global Trends” report for 2023 on Thursday. Chrys Carvajal, 19, was killed in Chicago on July 3, 2021 in a drive-by shooting as he was walking to his car while attending a Fourth of July party with his girlfriend.

Three years on from his killing, Gary 'Gotti' Roberson, 40, and Joseph 'Troubles' Matos, 41, are set to stand trial over his brutal slaying. Evidence linking at least one of the suspects to his death was reportedly with the state attorney's office soon after his killing, according to the Chicago Tribune. His family had to endure three years of pain after state attorney Kim Foxx, whose role is equivalent to DA for the city, said there wasn't enough evidence to prosecute.

Federal prosecutors have now pinned the murder on Roberson and Matos alongside another charge of racketeering.

According to his sister Jennifer Ramirez, Carvajal had been at home on leave from basic training when he was killed. According to a recently unsealed indictment, the two killed Carvajal 'for the purpose of maintaining and increasing position in the Milwaukee Kings', a known street gang. As per the indictment, the Milwaukee Kings gang operates on the North Side of Chicago and carries out murders and other acts to protect their power and territory.

Former President Trump appears to be making stunning inroads with young voters as he stakes out youth-friendly positions that defy GOP orthodoxy and contradict past statements.

Why it matters: The prospect of Trump coming within striking distance of winning young voters — which shows up in poll after poll — would have seemed unthinkable at the outset of the cycle.

State of play: Public polling suggests a significant shift toward Trump could be coming in the 2024 election among the country's youngest voters.

The latest New York Times/Siena polling of likely voters has President Biden with just a 2-point lead over Trump among those between 18-29. A recent Quinnipiac survey has Trump ahead by a point among registered voters between 18-34. By contrast, CNN exit polling showed that Biden won the 18-29-year-old vote by 24 percentage points in 2020, and that Hillary Clinton won it by 19 points in 2016.

Reality check: The polls could be wrong. Polling younger voters has become more difficult in recent years as answering landlines — a traditional method of polling outreach — is an archaic practice for today's youth.

Zoom in: Trump is staking out policies that cater to the preferences of younger voters, even as they don't map neatly to the conservative consensus.

1. After proposing a TikTok ban during his presidency, Trump baffled conservative China hawks by coming out against such a move earlier this year. The electoral upside of that stance is clear:TikTok is popular among younger users, and support for a ban grows as the age of respondents increases.Trump joined TikTok and posted his first video earlier this month. 2.Trump has hugged the cryptocurrency world in recent weeks.He's boosted NFTs, vowed to end regulatory hostility and endorsed U.S.-mined Bitcoin as a way to help America become "energy dominant." That contrasts with the Biden administration's posture toward the industry. SEC chair Gary Gensler has become one of crypto's biggest villains.

During his own presidency, Trump declared that he was "not a fan" of crypto — which is most frequently embraced by young men.

3. Trump singled out a new constituency this weekby vowing to get rid of tip taxation, the Washington Post reports. The comments, made at a Las Vegas rally, may have been targeted at career service-industry workers — and Latinos in particular. But young restaurant and bar workers nationwide might take notice.

Between the lines: Trump's positions frequently cut against positions he's held in the past, bringing into question whether they represent sincerely held beliefs or electoral pandering. (You mean like Joe giving $60 billion in student loans, by stealing the people's money, like that kind of pandering?)

The bottom line: Any massive movement of young voters to the right could be a once-in-a-generation victory for Republicans.

The youth vote hasn't been close since Al Gore beat George W. Bush by 2 points in 2000. No Republican has won young Americans since 1988.

The photos are likely to raise fresh questions about parts of Yovanovitch’s testimony to Congress during former President Donald Trump’s first impeachment. It also raises the question of why the U.S. embassy in Ukraine engaged with company representatives in a public relations campaign with the U.S. government at the same time that internal embassy communications focused on the company’s corruption.

Photos obtained from the now-deleted Burisma website and the U.S.-Ukraine Business Council (USUBC) show that Yovanovitch attended two meetings hosted by the USUBC in Kyiv with Vadim Pozharskyi, the Burisma executive who met with then-Vice President Joe Biden and appears frequently in Hunter Biden’s emails.

The Burisma website also referenced one other meeting, though no photos were provided.Pozharksyi—the corporate secretary who ran the day to day operationswith the board of the company—was at the epicenter of Burisma’s public relations campaignto close down investigations into the company by former Ukraine Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin.

Yovanovitch testified at Trump’s first impeachment because she served as the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine when Trump made the infamous phone call to the newly inaugurated Ukrainian President, Volodymr Zelensky.

In her October 2019 testimony as part of the first Trump impeachment inquiry, Yovanovitch told congressional investigators that Burisma—and Hunter Biden’s role with the company—was not a focus during her time at the embassy.

Honestly, there’s a whole lot aboutHunter Biden that flies under the radar, including his involvementin a business that thrives on asteady flow of illegal immigrants. Could this be why his father threw open the floodgates, sparking a massive invasion at the border? It seems like a rhetorical question in light of everything we know about this criminal family.

NASA Welcomes Armenia as 43rd Artemis Accords Signatory

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson welcomed Armenia as the newest nation to sign the Artemis Accords Wednesday during a ceremony with the U.S. State Department at NASA Headquarters in Washington. Armenia joins 42 other countries in a commitment to advancing principles for the safe, transparent, and responsible exploration of the Moon, Mars and beyond.

“NASA is proud to welcome Armenia to the Artemis Accords as we expand the peaceful exploration of space,” said Nelson. “Today’s signing builds on an important foundation. Armenia long has looked to the heavens and helped humanity understand them. As the 10th nation this year to sign the Artemis Accords, we are proving that exploration unites nations like few other things can. We will continue to expand humanity’s reach in the cosmos – together.”

Mkhitar Hayrapetyan, Minister of High-Tech Industry, signed the Artemis Accords on behalf of Armenia. Lilit Makunts, ambassador of Armenia to the U.S. and Jennifer R. Littlejohn, acting assistant secretary, Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs, Department of State, also participated in the event.

“By signing these accords, Armenia joins a community of nations dedicated to advancing the frontiers of human knowledge and capability in space,” said Hayrapetyan. “Our involvement will not only enhance our technological capabilities, but also inspire a new generation of Armenians to dream big, to innovate and to explore the world and universe.”

The United States and seven other nations were the first to sign the Artemis Accords in 2020, which identified an early set of principles promoting the beneficial use of space for humanity. The accords are grounded in the Outer Space Treaty and other agreements including the Registration Convention, the Rescue and Return Agreement, as well as best practices and norms of responsible behavior that NASA and its partners have supported, including the public release of scientific data. More countries are expected to sign the Artemis Accords in the months and years to come.

The commitments of the Artemis Accords, and efforts by the signatories to advance implementation of these principles, support NASA’s Artemis campaign with its partners, as well as for the success of the safe and sustainable exploration activities of the other accords signatories.

NASA calls off spacewalk at International Space Station due to 'spacesuit discomfort'

The spacewalk scheduled for two NASA astronauts today (June 13) has been postponed.

International Space Station (ISS) Expedition 71 crew members Tracy Dyson and Matt Dominick will not be performing an extravehicular activity (EVA) that had been scheduled to begin Thursday (June 13) morning. The pair had already begun adorning their spacesuits when NASA announced the EVA's postponement, according to a space agency blog post this morning.

The call came at about 6:25 a.m. CDT (1025 GMT), approximately one hour before Dyson and Dominick were supposed to be egressing the ISS from the Quest airlock.

NASA had already begun the livestream of today's EVA procedures when the announcement was made. "Spacewalkers Tracy Dyson and Matt Dominick were preparing for US EVA 90 — spacewalk 90 — today, but today's spacewalk will not be proceeding as planned," a NASA commentator said on the stream just after the postponement decision was made, adding, "we're standing by for more information, and we will share as we learn that."

Shortly after, a NASA update indicated the call was made due to a "spacesuit discomfort issue," but did not indicate which astronaut had experienced the problem.

One of the crew members assisting Dyson and Dominick was NASA astronaut Suni Williams, seen in NASA's livestream. Williams recently arrived at the space station aboard Boeing's Starliner spacecraft as a part of the capsule's Crew Flight Test (CFT). Suni and her CFT crewmate NASA astronaut Butch Wilmore docked with the station a day after their June 5 rocket launch and were scheduled to depart about a week later. However, their return to Earth was pushed to June 18, citing preparations for today's EVA as part of the reason. It is not clear whether the changes to this morning's EVA will affect Wilmore and Williams' departure from the space station.

The spacewalk cancellation comes after audio from an ISS emergency medical drill caused a media stir when it accidentally aired live on NASA livestreams on Wednesday evening. There was no emergency situation on the ISS, NASA said

GOP Rep. Troy Nehls his military service award (Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB)) was allegedly revoked last year.

Texas GOP Rep. Troy Nehls requested information from the United States Army on Tuesday, on why one of his military service awards was allegedly revoked last year.

Nehls has come under scrutiny recently after he continued wearing a Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB), despite it being revoked by the Army in 2023. A CBS News review last month revealed that the award was revoked because he served as a civil affairs officer with the 101st Airborne Division, when the badge was intended for infantrymen and Special Forces soldiers.

The congressman said he disagrees with the service pulling the pin, which was awarded to him in 2008 for his service in Afghanistan, and requested information on who the service spoke with about the pin.

“I further believe this is a concerted effort to discredit my military service and continued service to the American people as a Member of Congress,” Nehls wrote in a letter to the Army Human Resource Command.

Nehls also asked for information on how many CIB service pins were pulled from military records in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, and for the Army to forward any correspondence about the pins that the Army Human Resource Command had with the 101st Airborne. He demanded a response to the requests within 14 days.

The Texan told reporters on Tuesday that he believes the Army had revoked his award because he supported former President Donald Trump.

Federal Reserve holds interest rates at two-decade high as it waits for inflation to cool

The Federal Reserve held interest rates at a two-decade high on Wednesday, as it awaits more signs of inflation cooling.

Officials at the US central bank expect to cut rates just once this year, according to projections released on Wednesday after their latest two-day meeting.

As recently as March, the last time these projections were released, policymakers expected the Fed to cut rates three times this year.

This time around, they opted to keep rates between 5.25% and 5.5%, where they have been for nearly a year.

While the Fed chair, Jerome Powell, described price growth as “still too high”, he welcomed official data released on Wednesday which signaled that it had eased.

Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency Wednesday in parts of the US state of Florida due to flooding.

The emergency situation covers several counties including Broward, Collier, Lee, Miami-Dade and Sarasota.

"The rainfall and flooding has affected and may continue to impact the operational capability of critical infrastructure, including major

interstates, state and county roadways, airports, schools and other critical infrastructure throughout these counties," said DeSantis in the declaration.

"Additional rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecasted for South Florida for the next several days which will further exacerbate ongoing flood conditions over already impacted and vulnerable metropolitan areas," he said.

The National Weather Service in Miami said Wednesday evening that areal flood warnings were issued for portions of Broward, Miami-Dade, Collier and Hendry County and they are in effect through 8 a.m. Thursday.

Months after a massive fire at a Navy hangar fouled the air in Tustin, people living there are still uneasy about what's been left behind.

"What are they doing?" resident Darlene Sparks said. "I think, as residents, we want to know what they are doing with this structure."

Sparks lives directly across the street from the massive Tustin hangar that burned last November, sending plumes of black smoke and debris into the air.

"I'd like to know when they are going to inspect our properties thoroughly inside our attics and our airconditioning units and go through our gutters," Sparks said. "Give us some updates. The biggest thing has been the lack of communication."

The US Navy, which owns the hangar, has committed an additional $27 million to the city of Tustin to help catch up on payments owed to contractors, according to the mayor. Work has already been done to clean up the site and nearby neighborhood, deconstruct the hangar and for air monitoring. Mayor Austin Lumbard said the new funding strengthened the city's confidence in recovering from the tragic event.

Myanmar border militia emerges as nexus in regional scam network

An ethnic minority militia force based on Myanmar’s border with Thailand is suspected of enabling extensive internet fraud, human trafficking, forced labor and other crimes, and is being enriched by a business network that extends across Asia, a rights group said in a report.

The group Justice for Myanmar detailed a multitude of business links that the junta-allied Karen Border Guard Force, or BGF, has established in Thailand, Malaysia and beyond, and it called on governments to act to stop the illegal activity.

The militia was formed by fighters who broke away from the Karen National Union insurgent group in the 1990s and sided with the junta. It became one of several military-backed Border Guard Forces in 2009.

Control over border crossings gave the group access to lucrative revenue streams, while its self-ruled zones became a magnet for illegal casinos, online gambling and scam centers that have proliferated along Myanmar’s borders with both China and Thailand.

The operations, which gangs organize throughout the region, are often run on the labor of people tricked into thinking they’ve landed legitimate jobs but forced to adopt false identities online in what have become known as “pig-butchering” schemes, forming relationships with victims then tricking them into investing in fake schemes.

University of Texas researchers estimated in a March report that scammers had tricked investors out of more than US$75 billion since January 2020.

The House Homeland Security Committee advanced a raft of new legislation today, including a bill aimed at cutting major Chinese battery manufacturers out of the Department of Homeland Security’s supply chain.

The committee today voted to approve a bill from Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-Fl.), “Decoupling from Foreign Adversarial Battery Dependence Act.” The bill would block DHS from procuring batteries from six Chinese companies over concerns about human rights abuses, as well as supply chain and cybersecurity concerns.

Under the legislation, the ban would begin on Oct. 1, 2027.

During today’s markup, Gimenez said he had engaged with DHS in developing the legislation over the past two months. “The committee incorporated nearly all of DHS’s inputs,” he said.

Hugh Franklin Culverhouse, Jr. — former assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Florida and the son of the former owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers — has given former President Donald Trump half a million dollars for his presidential campaign in protest of his felony conviction.

Last week, Trump was convicted on 34 counts in a New York state case of falsifying documents to hide hush-money payments to a porn star in order to influence the outcome of the 2016 election.

Culverhouse told the Herald/Times this week thathe feels like the case against Trump was politically motivated, as are the six other criminal and civil cases against him, and violate Trump’s constitutional right to testify.

“Anything he says on that witness stand can be used in all of the remaining suits,” Culverhouse, who practices constitutional law, said. “So, you basically have a violation of the Fifth Amendment.”

Culverhouse added: “The bottom line: that’s not kosher. That’s not fair. That’s not constitutional.”

Here’s where it gets even more interesting, folks. Consider this: the guy’s a Hillary-Biden voter who’s contributed to the Biden campaign and the Lincoln Project. Yet he’s so fed up with what the Democrats are doing that he just forked over $500,000 to Donald Trump. Let that sink in for a moment. The Miami Herald piece continues:

Culverhouse, who is 75 and practices law at his firm in Coral Gables, has a long record of cutting large political checks to both Democrats and Republicans. Federal records show he donated to the Biden campaign and even the anti-Trump Lincoln Project in 2020, but has more recently been a big supporter of Republican causes, contributing more than $750,000 to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ failed presidential campaign.

Culverhouse, who said he’s currently a registered Republican but has been an independent in the past, said he voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Joe Biden in 2020. But since Biden took office, Culverhouse said he’s become increasingly conservative. Culverhouse “lost faith” in Biden after he withdrew from Afghanistan in 2021.

“You don’t walk out on your allies and just flee,” Culverhouse said.

And he’s been turned off by other policies such as Biden’s effort to cancel student debt.

While Culverhouse isn’t thrilled about Trump, he said he plans to vote for him in 2024 because he believes he’s being politically persecuted in the legal system.

Dozens of Alaskan rivers have turned bright orange in recent years because melting permafrost has released high levels of toxic metals into the waterways, a worrying new study reveals.

The colorful contamination, which can be seen from space, is a potential ecological nightmare — and is likely to get even worse in the coming years, researchers say.

In the new study, which was published May 20 in the journal Communications Earth & Environment, researchers identified at least 75 orange rivers and streams in a Texas-size area of Alaska's Brooks mountain range.

Most of the affected waterways were initially spotted by helicopter surveys of the area.

"The more we flew around, we started noticing more and more orange rivers and streams," study lead author Jon O'Donnell, an ecologist with the National Park Service's Arctic Inventory and Monitoring Network, said in a statement.

"There are certain sites that look almost like a milky orange juice."

Chemical analysis of the rusty rivers revealed high levels of zinc, nickel, copper and cadmium, as well as iron, which is largely responsible for the orange hue of the waterways.

Researchers also found that the polluted waterways were unusually acidic: Some of the smaller streams had a pH of as low as 2.3, which is around the same as lemon juice or vinegar, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The high metal concentration and acidity of the water can both be tied to melting permafrost — a permanently frozen layer of Earth's surface that covers large swaths of the Arctic.

As the frozen ground thaws thanks to human-caused climate change, previously sealed minerals are exposed to rain for the first time in thousands of years, allowing metals to dissolve out of the rocks and into surrounding streams, which feed larger rivers.

Not only are the affected habitats visually transformed but the high mineral concentrations are also highly toxic to most aquatic life.

Researchers are particularly worried about what the toxic meltwater could be doing to spawning fish, which could have major knock-on effects on U.S. fisheries.

The idea for the new study was seeded back in 2018 when researchers visited a rust-colored river that had been crystal clear just a year earlier.

However, subsequent satellite sleuthing revealed images of orange rivers dating back as far as 2008.

It is hard to tell how much metal has been released into rivers during this time.

But the rivers in satellite photos "have to be stained a lot to pick them up from space," study co-author Brett Poulin, an environmental toxicologist at the University of California, Davis, said in the statement.

The researchers are planning follow-up tests this year to determine the full scale of the problem. However, they fear that increased permafrost melting caused by record-breaking temperatures over the last year will have released even more metals.

And as temperatures continue to climb in the coming decades, metal contamination is likely to get even worse.

As the water gets more acidic over time it will also make it easier for even more metals to dissolve from the newly thawed permafrost, creating a worrying "positive feedback loop" — where the problem gets exponentially worse.

The melting of the permafrost is also likely to birth more new rivers in places like Alaska and Siberia, which would further exacerbate the issue.

There are lots of other serious implications to losing permafrost coverage, such as releasing more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, as well as uncovering radioactive materials and unleashing dormant viruses, which could spark new pandemics.

For the first time, scientists have revealed crucial properties of the mysterious, radioactive substance promethium — nearly eight decades after the elusive rare earth element was discovered.

Promethium is one of the 15 lanthanide elements at the bottom of the periodic table. Also known as the rare earths, these metals exhibit a number of useful properties, including strong magnetism and unusual optical characteristics, making them particularly important in modern electronic devices.

"They are used in lasers; they are part of the screens of your smartphone.

They are also used in very strong magnets in wind turbines and electric vehicles," Ilja Popovs, a research and development staff member at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and co-author of a new study published in the journal Nature, told Live Science.

'Scarce and difficult to study'

Promethium itself, which was discovered by ORNL scientists in 1945, has a few minor applications in atomic batteries and cancer diagnostics. But scientists have a very limited understanding of the element's chemistry, precluding more widespread uses.

Studying the radioactive element has posed a decades-long challenge, partly due to the difficulty of securing a suitable sample, team member Alexander Ivanov, also a research and development scientist at ORNL, told Live Science.

"Promethium doesn't have a stable isotope — they're all radioactive, meaning that they are decaying [into other elements] with time," Ivanov said. "You get this element through a fission process, so it's scarce and difficult to study."

ORNL is the U.S.' only producer of promethium-147, an isotope of the element with a radioactive half-life of 2.6 years. Using a method developed last year, the researchers separated this isotope from nuclear reactor waste streams, creating the purest possible sample for study.

Then, the team combined this sample with a ligand — a molecule specially designed to trap metal atoms — to form a stable complex in water.

The coordinating molecule, known as PyDGA, formed nine promethium-oxygen bonds, giving researchers the first-ever opportunity to analyze the bonding properties of a promethium complex. However, the analysis itself was no trivial matter.

"Because promethium is radioactive, once it's decaying, it's getting transmuted into the adjacent element, which is samarium," Ivanov said. "So you will have a tiny amount of contamination in the form of samarium."

'The last puzzle piece'

The team therefore used an extremely specialized, element-specific technique called synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy.

High-energy photons generated by a particle accelerator bombarded the promethium complex to build a picture of the positions of atoms and the lengths of bonds.

Subtle differences in the metal-oxygen bond lengths then allowed the team to focus on the key promethium-oxygen bond, discounting any contaminating samarium.

Crucially, this information enabled a comparison of promethium's properties with other rare earth complexes for the first time.

"Promethium was the last puzzle piece among those elements," Popovs said. The ligand provided a way to have a stable complex for all of the lanthanides — the same element ratios and the same kind of geometry.

That allowed the team to "study the fundamental physical chemical properties of these complexes across the whole series," Popovs explained.

Lanthanides are naturally found as mixtures of elements, so understanding periodic trends such as bond lengths and complex-forming behaviors helps scientists develop new and more efficient methods to separate these valuable metals.

Now, the ORNL team is studying promethium in water to build a clearer picture of the coordination environment and chemical behavior of this unusual element.

"Hopefully, the fundamental insights that we're providing will inform other scientists how to design better separation technologies and can perhaps spur more interest in studying it for other applications," Popovs said.

Evan Gershkovich is accused of collecting intelligence about the Russian military industry

The Russian Prosecutor General has finalized its indictment against Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich, who is accused of attempting to obtain military secrets for the CIA, it was announced on Thursday.

In a statement, investigators claimed they have evidence that the American citizen was acting on behalf of the US foreign intelligence agency whenhe tried to collect classified information about Uralvagonzavod, a major Russian producer of tanks and armored vehicles, in Ekaterinburg in March 2023.

The case, which was compiled based on materials provided by the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), has been sent for trial at a court in the Urals region of Sverdlovsk, it added.

The court has jurisdiction as Uralvagonzavod is located in the region and the alleged crimes were committed on its soil.

Gershkovich and his employer have denied the Russian allegations and have claimed he is being held unlawfully. The newspaper has called on the US government to retaliate and has reportedly been told that Washington is looking for “creative solutions” to resolve the situation.

American officials have reportedly contacted other governments about potentially taking custody of prisoners who they believe may be of interest to Russia in a swap for Gershkovich. Brazil, Norway, Germany, and an unnamed former Soviet bloc country have been approached with such requests, according to Western media.

Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson asked Russian President Vladimir Putin about Gershkovich during an interview in February, claiming that his fellow US journalist was “obviously not a spy.”Putin responded by saying that “getting classified information in secret is called espionage,” and that Gershkovich was “caught red-handed when he was receiving this information.”

Moscow has no objections in principle to releasing Gershkovich eventually but won’t do so simply as a goodwill gesture because it has already “exhausted” such reserves in dealing with Washington, Putin added. ==kek

Nine members of Congress have asked NASA to reconsider significant changes to operations of the Chandra X-Ray Observatory linked to proposed cuts in the space telescope’s budget.

In the June 6 letter to NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, the nine members, all Democrats and most from Massachusetts, where Chandra’s operations center is located, expressed their opposition to NASA’s plans in its fiscal year 2025 budget proposal to slash funding for the 25-year-old telescope, a move that scientists said could effectively cancel the mission.

“If implemented, these cuts would result in a significantly reduced FY25 science mission and initiate a closeout process in FY26,” the letter stated.

“The justification for these cuts cites rising mission costs and inefficiencies. But Chandra’s operational efficiency remains near optimal, its costs stable, and its scientific returns per taxpayer dollar exceptionally high.”

The letter went on that a “premature termination” of Chandra would have major impacts on the X-ray astrophysics community, “potentially driving talent to other countries.”

The members called on NASA to maintain full funding for Chandra — $68.7 million, what the agency requested for the telescope in 2024 — “and to halt plans for significant reductions in FY25 until Congress determines Chandra’s appropriations.”

Neither the House nor the Senate have formally introduced spending bills for fiscal year 2025 that include NASA, although the commerce, justice and science (CJS) appropriations subcommittee in the House is scheduled to mark up its bill, which funds NASA, in late June.

NASA’s proposed 40% cut in Chandra’s budget has received little public attention in hearings in the House and Senate about the budget request. An exception is an April 17 hearing by the House CJS appropriations subcommittee, where Rep. Joe Morelle (D-N.Y.) asked Nelson to reconsider the proposed cut.

“We had to make hard choices,” Nelson responded, referring to the overall fiscal constraints the agency faced. “Chandra has been the mission that has given us so many gifts, but it’s been there for 25 years, and it’s time for new missions.”

The letter comes as NASA is concluding a review it announced in March to find ways to reduce the costs of operating both Chandra and the Hubble Space Telescope.

Speaking at a town hall session of the 244th Meeting of the American Astronomical Society June 10, Mark Clampin, director of NASA’s astrophysics division, said he expected to soon receive the final report from a committee called the Operations Paradigm Change Review.

“We asked them to look at how we could reduce the cost of operations but also continue to do the best science with these capabilities going forward,” he said of the review.

NASA would make an announcement “in due course” of any changes to the operations of the two space telescopes, he said, a process that will include a town hall to discuss with scientists the impacts of those changes.

The review, he acknowledged, included the options of ending operations of Chandra and Hubble, but said that was not a preferred outcome.

“We don’t want to stop using Hubble and we don’t want to stop using Chandra. We want to find a cheaper way to do it,” he said. “But, we wanted to make sure that they were looking at all the options that were possible.”

Thales, Spire Global and the European Satellite Services Provider announced a memorandum of cooperation June 13 to develop a satellite constellation dedicated to air traffic surveillance.

The constellation of more than 100 satellites will collect aircraft Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) messages and quickly relay them to ground stations. The partners aim to begin providing commercial services from the new constellation in 2027.

“This innovative satellite-based surveillance service will accelerate the implementation of our new ‘Air Traffic Control as a service’ offering,” Christian Rivierre, Thales Airspace Mobility Solutions vice president, said in a statement.

“It will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the skies, serving as a vital facilitator for trajectory-based operations and laying the foundation for a safer, more environmentally friendly, and cost-efficient” air traffic management system.

The agreement calls for Spire to develop the space segment, from designing and building satellites and payloads to establishing a ground network and collecting data. Thales will deliver the air traffic management system.

The European Satellite Services Provider, formed by regional air navigation service providers, will manage the certification and delivery of air traffic surveillance services and perform round-the-clock operations.

The Space Alliance, formed by Thales Alenia Space and Telespazio, will work with the constellation partners to identify key-enabling technologies, support network optimization and establish sustainable operations.

The new low-Earth orbit constellation will provide information on the position of civilian aircraft around the world every 8 seconds with a latency of 1.5 seconds.

Low latency and frequent updates are required for International Civil Aviation Organization-certified air traffic surveillance systems.

“The birth of a satellite constellation fully dedicated to serving the demanding needs of air traffic management, air domain awareness and national security is a groundbreaking development for the aviation industry,” Philip Plantholt, Spire Aviation general manager, said in a statement.

“Through our strategic partnership with Thales and ESSP, we are poised to offer the first real alternative to the aging systems that exist today and embark on a journey towards even more advanced space-based solutions for aviation in the years to come.”

ESA Contract

In addition to the latest announcement, Spire announced is working with Thales and ESSP on Eurialo, a project funded by the European Space Agency.

Through Eurialo, the partners intend to develop a civil aviation tracking constellation that does not rely on global navigation satellite systems.

Commercial aircraft periodically report their locations through ADS-B transmitters, which rely on global navigation satellite services. The latest generation of air traffic surveillance systems augment GNSS information.

Under the 16 million euro ESA contract announced in 2023, the Spire-led group will design and demonstrate the viability of a constellation that determines the location of aircraft based on the time of arrival of radio frequency signals.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Puerto Rico’s elections commission said Tuesday that it’s reviewing its contract with a U.S. electronic voting company after hundreds of discrepancies were discovered following the island’s heated primaries.

The problem stemmed from a software issue that caused machines supplied by Dominion Voting Systems to incorrectly calculate vote totals, said Jessika Padilla Rivera, the commission’s interim president.

While no one is contesting the results from the June 2 primary that correctly identify the winners, machine-reported vote counts were lower than the paper ones in some cases, and some machines reversed certain totals or reported zero votes for some candidates.

“The concern is that we obviously have elections in November, and we must provide the (island) not only with the assurance that the machine produces a correct result, but also that the result it produces is the same one that is reported,” Padilla said.

More than 6,000 Dominion voting machines were used in Puerto Rico’s primaries, with the company stating that software issues stemmed from the digital files used to export results from the machines.

The contract between Dominion and the elections commission ends June 30.

José Varela, vice president of Puerto Rico’s House of Representatives, called for Padilla to appear at a public hearing Thursday to address the issues.

Attorney General Merrick Garland this week called for “attacks” against the Justice Department to stop, in a rare op-ed a day before the House voted to hold him in contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with a congressional subpoena.

Garland said in the piece, which appeared in the Washington Post on Tuesday, that in recent weeks, there have been an “escalation of attacks that go far beyond public scrutiny, criticism, and legitimate and necessary oversight of our work,” and claimed that the attacks are “baseless, personal and dangerous.”

He suggested the attacks were coming from Trump supporters, in response to the recent trial of former President Donald Trump, as well as several other ongoing federal and local government cases against him.

“These attacks come in the form of threats to defund particular department investigations, most recently the special counsel’s prosecution of the former president,” he wrote, adding:

They come in the form of conspiracy theories crafted and spread for the purpose of undermining public trust in the judicial process itself. Those include false claims that a case brought by a local district attorney and resolved by a jury verdict in a state trial was somehow controlled by the Justice Department.

He also appeared to reference a recently-unsealed FBI operations order that stated that agents were authorized to use deadly force during the raid of Mar-a-Lago for suspected classified documents, saying that “come in the form of dangerous falsehoods about the FBI’s law enforcement operations that increase the risks faced by our agents.”

Garland also referenced accusations from Trump himself, that the cases against him was part of a Democrat strategy to hurt him at the ballot box, calling them “false claims that the department is politicizing its work to somehow influence the outcome of an election.”

Garland claimed it was “absurd and dangerous” that public servants are “being threatened for simply doing their jobs and adhering to the principles that have long guided the Justice Department’s work.”

Nowhere in his op-ed did he address a recent DOJ special counsel decision not to prosecute President Joe Biden for retention of classified material after leaving as vice president in part due to him being a “sympathetic, well-meaning elderly man with a poor memory,” while at the same time another DOJ special counsel has charged Trump with 40 counts pertaining to his retention of classified materials after leaving office.

It's a drone; it's a UFO; it's really who you ask: What's buzzing around U.S. nuclear sites?

Going back from the 1940s and ‘50s to the present day, whistleblowers have reported UFO sightings around nuclear sites, but Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Jennifer Granholm said they’re "drones."

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., hit Granholm with rapid-fire questions, including if the DOE was reverse engineering crashed alien technology, and if it worked with a counter-terrorism task force.

Granholm's answers were, "I have no knowledge of that," and "Yes," respectively, which an expert told Fox News Digital is a "big deal" admission.

The fiery exchange between Luna and Granholm was about five minutes of a 2.5-hour Congressional Oversight Committee hearing on May 23.

Luna's last question, "Does the DOE work with JSOC (Joint Special Operations Command)?" raised eyebrows and created buzz on social media.

Granholm danced around the question at first, but Luna repeated the inquiry and demanded a yes or no answer.

Granholm finally responded, "Yes, we do."

Investigative journalist and leading UFO expert Jeremy Corbell said, "This was a bold move by Congress."

JSOC is a military task force under the command of the U.S. Special Operations Command that plans and executes special operations missions.

It's allegedly been noted by whistleblowers that JSOC worked with the DOE to retrieve crashed alien crafts and reverse engineer the tech, according to Corbell.

"JSOC is likely hardcore involved with the crash retrieval program, under the authority of the CIA, so the DOE having to admit they work with JSOC is a big deal," Corbell told Fox News Digital.

"Sec. Granholm did not like having to admit that."

JSOC has denied these allegations and implications in previous statements. Fox News Digital reached out to JSOC for comment, but didn't hear back.

Luna told Fox News Digital in an email that "some people, like the secretary (Granholm), would like to make a mockery of these things," referring to the topic of UAPs, but "over 50% of Americans think that UAPs potentially exist."

That "means that the federal government should take this seriously," the Florida Republican lawmaker said. "I directly confronted Energy Secretary Granholm with multiple reports, as well as a statement by the Pentagon, and she still denied the facts.

"That's why I believe the American people have lost faith in our government to be transparent." Luna's exchange with Granholm wasn't the end of her back and forth with the DOE.

She submitted nine questions to the DOE, which were exclusively obtained by Fox News Digital. They're listed below.

A DOE spokesperson said in an email, "DOE is in receipt of the QFRs and will respond to the Committee and Congresswoman directly."

A US Department of Defense contractor's tantalizing encounter with a giant, glowing UFO has sparked 10 years of research and two patents inspired by his encounter.

Three witnesses, including that Pentagon engineer, report that they captured electronic evidence of a 'barbell' UFO, half the length of a football field, that glowed an eerie 'indigo' blue.

The craft, they said, flew silently over an old logging road in southwestern Ontario, Canada, on August 28, 2013, near where the trio had camped for a hunting trip.

DailyMail.com spoke with the case's first investigators, who shared electronic data from the contractor's attempt to film the object — showing 'white noise' pulses in the video that recur in one-second loops identical to strobing light from the UFO itself.

'The captured data of the event,' the witness reported, 'may be the first real physical proof of not just a craft flying, but that it flies by virtue of an incredibly complex and [...] powerful spinning electromagnetic propulsion system.'

The case was investigated by the same nanotechnology expert whose analysis of a 2007 mass UFO sighting in Texas became a centerpiece of the Steven Spielberg-produced UFO docuseries 'Encounters' last year on Netflix.

'Is there another 'barbell' case we've investigated like this?' that engineer, UFO investigator Robert Powell, told DailyMail.com of this rare case. 'No, it's the only one.'

Powell told DailyMail.com that UFO cases with this shape are so rare that only about '50 to 60 cases' exist 'throughout history.'

Powell, whose new book on UFOs has garnered praise from former Defense Department intelligence official Chris Mellon, personally visited the contractor's lab and worked with him on analyzing the eerie interference on his UFO video.

'He gave me a tour of the defense facility,' Powell said, who vetted the source's identity and biographical claims.

'There was a heavy duty commercial 3D printer in the lab and there were offices with three or four engineers that worked there beside him in that his building,' he noted.

The August 28, 2013 'barbell' UFO encounter itself, these witnesses said, began at around 9:40pm as they were returning to civilization from a black bear hunting expedition, a practice that is legal when done in season in Canada.

The defense contractor witness was seated in the back of Dodge 4x4 truck, with the two other witnesses in the front seat, as reported to Powell and his co-investigator, retired former police detective Phil Leech.

'We were roughly four-and-a-half or five miles from the main road, when I noted something over my shoulder,' continued the defense contractor, who wishes to remain anonymous to preserve his Defense Department business contacts.

'The very first thing that was intense was just how bright this thing was,' he noted.

'It was spectacular. Having been involved with optical systems in the past, we're talking about a vehicle that looked like a stadium lighting scenario — it was brilliant.'

The witness described 'an indigo plasma that covered most of the craft,' which was bone-shaped or barbell-shaped and extended about 170-feet long, 60-feet wide and 20-feet tall, as it flew slowly just over the tree-line above this old logging road.

'The craft rotated slowly around its center while emitting an electrical-spark-like shower, always opposite of the direction of travel,' the defense contractor stated, 'but without a specific origin point.'

The witness said he first attempted to film the UFO with two devices that he had on him, a Motorola cellphone and a Sony HD camera.

But both devices behaved has if they were caught in 'a boot sequence,' failing to stay on while the craft was nearby, about 400 feet, leaving the witness to view the UFO more closely through the scope of his rifle.

Up close, he told investigators, 'The lights that it emitted were not incoherent light,' meaning not the diffuse 'soft light' like that from a light bulb, but more like laser light.

On June 27, 2024, CNN will host the first of two scheduled presidential debates. The New Paradigm Institute calls on CNN and the debate moderators to include a question about UAP disclosure.

The Fiscal Year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) established the “Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena Records Collection” at the National Archives and Records Administration. The Act provides the Executive branch with sweeping powers to withhold and postpone the release of documents relating to UAP under national security grounds that the New Paradigm Institute considers overly broad.

“The next President of the United States will make critical decisions about UAP disclosure and government transparency. It’s time for all presidential candidates – Joe Biden, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and Donald J. Trump – to commit to UFOs/UAP disclosure and transparency,” said New Paradigm Institute Chief Counsel Daniel Sheehan. “Regardless of political affiliation, the time has come to inject UAP into the political discourse of our elections.”

The New Paradigm Institute’s (NPI) campaign calls on the public to demand that CNN and debate moderators Jake Tapper and Dana Bash ask the candidates about UAP disclosure and government transparency at the June 27, 2024, presidential debate at CNN’s Atlanta studios.

California Sees 90,000 People Lose Their Jobs in Two Weeks

alifornia unemployment benefit claims have hit 90,000 in two weeks, data from the Department of Labor shows.

For the week ending June 8, new claims for jobless benefits shot up by 10,000 from the prior week to 51,000 applications. The previous week's new benefit claims stood at close to 41,000, bringing the total over the two-week period to slightly more than 90,000 applicants for unemployment support.

The job market in California has recovered from the pandemic era convulsions where the jobless rate catapulted to more than 16 percent. That has come down substantially to 5.3 percent in April, according to Federal Reserve Economic Data. But the state lags behind the national rate which was at 3.9 percent during the same month.

However, the employment picture in the Golden State reveals that employers are still hiring and the net unemployment rate has stayed unchanged for three straight months, according to data from the Employment Development Department (EDD) in California.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Loan Program Office (LPO) made a conditional commitment to Solugen’s wholly owned subsidiary Bioforge Marshall for a $213.6 million loan guarantee to finance the construction of a production facility in Marshall, MN, for bio-based organic acids. This commitment is the single largest U.S. government investment in bioindustrial manufacturing since President Biden signed Executive Order 14081 on Advancing Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing Innovation for a Sustainable, Safe, and Secure American Bioeconomy, according to the DOE.

Russia’s prosecutor general has accused Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich of attempting to obtain military secrets for the CIA, it was announced on Thursday.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Disney asked a federal appellate court to dismiss its lawsuit against Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday, a day after his appointees approved a deal with the company on how Walt Disney World will be developed over the next two decades, ending the last piece of conflict between the two sides.

The request came as little surprise because the federal lawsuit’s future was contingent on whether a development agreement could be reached between Disney and the DeSantis appointees to the board of the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District that governs Disney World, according to a settlement reached in March.

The development deal was approved Wednesday night by the DeSantis appointees. Disney was facing a deadline next week to a file a brief with the court if it wanted to move ahead with the lawsuit against DeSantis and his appointees.

As part of the 15-year deal, Disney agreed to invest $17 billion into Disney World over the next two decades and the district committed to making infrastructure improvement on the theme park resort’s property. The district provides municipal services such as firefighting, planning and mosquito control, among other things, and was controlled by Disney supporters before last year’s takeover by the DeSantis appointees.

“This new development agreement paves the way for us to invest billions of dollars in Walt Disney World Resort, supporting the growth of this global destination, fueling the Florida economy, and allowing us to deliver even more memorable and extraordinary experiences for our guests,” said Jeff Vahle, president of Walt Disney World Resort.

Under the terms of the deal, Disney is approved to build a fifth major theme park at Disney World and two more minor parks, such as water parks, if it desires. The company can also raise the number of hotel rooms on its property from almost 40,000 rooms to more than 53,000 rooms and increase the amount of retail and restaurant space by more than 20%. Disney will retain control of building heights so it can maintain an immersive environment.

In exchange, Disney will donate up to 100 acres (40 hectares) of Disney World’s 24,000 acres (9,700 hectares) for the construction of infrastructure projects controlled by the district. The company also will need to award at least half of its construction projects to companies based in Florida and spend at least $10 million on affordable housing for central Florida.

A DeSantis spokesman said the governor was pleased that an agreement had been reached.

“This agreement is a big win for central Florida and will lead to numerous jobs and improved guest experiences,” said Bryan Griffin, communications director for the governor’s office.

The agreement followed a detente in March in which both sides agreed to stop litigating each other in state court and work toward negotiating a new development agreement and a new comprehensive plan no later than next year.

The March settlement ended almost two years of litigation sparked by DeSantis’ takeover of the district after the company’s opposition to a 2022 law that bans classroom lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity in early grades. The law was championed by the Republican governor, who used Disney as a punching bag in speeches during his run for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination until he suspended his campaign earlier this year.

The U.S. military made the rare move Thursday of announcing that an attack submarine was visiting the naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as a Russian flotilla conducts military exercises in the Caribbean.

In a statement, U.S. Southern Command said that the USS Helena, a Los Angeles-class nuclear submarine, would stop at the base for “a routine port visit as it transits the U.S. Southern Command geographic area of responsibility.”

The visit, Southern Command said, was “previously planned,” but it coincides with Wednesday’s arrival of a Russian nuclear submarine and several frigates to the port of Havana for an official port call. The Russian fleet, which sailed close to the Florida coast as it approached Havana, will also make stops in Venezuela and conduct military exercises in the Caribbean.

The U.S. and Canada monitored the fleet’s journey to the communist island, with both militaries deploying several ships and a reconnaissance plane to track them, CNN reported. Russian leader Vladimir Putin has vowed to use “asymmetrical tactics against the West” in response to Washington and other allies’ decision to allow Kyiv to use Western-made munitions against targets in Russian territory.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said Thursday on Fox News that “when you have a president who is weak, every bad guy on the globe is on the march and that is why we’re seeing, for example, Russian ships off Cuba with hypersonic weapons testing missiles just 90 miles off the coast of Florida.”
