Nearly 400 temporary migrant farm workers have joined the United Food and Commercial Workers 1518 in B.C., marking the largest group of farmworkers to join a union in Canadian history.

The migrant workers are employed across Highline Mushrooms’ four farms at several B.C. locations, which agreed to unionize in June.

The B.C. labour board certified the latest group last month, with 210 workers at a Langley mushroom farm joining the recently-unionized members at the Abbotsford locations.

The latest addition brings the total number of new union members to 390 agricultural workers.

The latest Langley union members are migrant agricultural workers in Canada on temporary work permits, the majority of which arrived from Guatemala, Mexico, India and Vietnam.

“This is more evidence that there is a strong desire for migrant food workers to engage their fundamental labour rights and unionize,” said UFCW Canada national president Shawn Haggerty in a statement.

The province of British Columbia rejected the provincial health officer’s recent report endorsing the legal sale of drugs such as methamphetamine, cocaine, and fentanyl in government-operated and retail stores.

Soon after the release of Henry’s report, B.C.’s Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Jennifer Whiteside quickly released a statement shutting it down.

“Dr. Henry is an important independent voice on public health issues in this province, and we respect her advice. However, this is a topic we do not agree on. The province will not go in the direction of compassion clubs and other non-medical models of distributing medications,” said Whiteside.

She added that the province is determined to save lives and help residents. However, B.C. will instead focus on expanding access to treatment and care for mental health and addictions across the province, while “cracking down” on toxic drug traffickers.

After Henry’s report was released, many critics on social media likened the advice to advocating for the government to enter the drug trafficking business.

Toronto’s streets are rife with gun crime and there are no signs that the shootings are slowing down.

The Toronto Police Service updated its firearm crime portal on July 8, showing that there were 253 shootings this year — an increase of 68.7% compared to the same time last year. Gun crime has resulted in 25 deaths so far in 2024, an increase of 108.3% — more than double the 12 fatalities reported in 2023.

The Canadian Coalition for Firearms Rights questioned in a post to X the logic behind Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s gun ban. The coalition added that youth-involved gun crime has increased 109% despite the policy.

As of Monday, five additional shootings not included in the latest data update have been reported, with one of them leaving a 16-year-old boy dead.

Deputy Chief Robert Johnson previously said that the rise in youth-involved gun crimes is particularly concerning, with young people increasingly recruited by gangs.

Former President Donald Trump has issued a new statement on the morning after the failed assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally.

Trump was shot in the ear, one rallygoer standing behind him was killed, and two more were left in critical condition.

In a post to Truth Social, Trump credited God for his survival.

“Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers yesterday, as it was God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening,” Trump began.

“We will FEAR NOT, but instead remain resilient in our Faith and Defiant in the face of Wickedness,” the post continued. “Our love goes out to the other victims and their families. We pray for the recovery of those who were wounded, and hold in our hearts the memory of the citizen who was so horribly killed.”

Another mass casualty strike has been reported on a refugee camp in southern Gaza, where the local health ministry says at least 90 have been killed, and 300 injured, after Israeli missiles slammed into Al-Mawasi camp, allegedly hitting tents where displaced persons were staying.

Israel has said that most of the victims were likely Hamas, and that it was going after the leader of the group's Qassam Brigades, Muhammad Deif, a mastermind behind the Oct.7 attacks. The Poland-Belarus border crisis has intensified over the past month, following the death of a Polish border guard at the hands of a spear-throwing migrant. The death of 21-year-old border guard Sgt Mateusz Sitek on June 6th garnered national and international attention, after days prior to his succumbing to his wounds a sharp spear was hurled from the fence where he was on patrol.

The not-for-profit representing over 18,000 family physicians released new data showing that the number of Ontarians without a family doctor has surpassed 2.5 million, rising from 1.8 million in 2020. The latest data available represents statistics as of Sept. 2023.

The Ontario College of Family Physicians said that over 160,000 Ontarians were added to the list without a family doctor in a six-month period.

“Every Ontarian deserves a family doctor, and patients should be able to find one in their community,” said the Ontario College of Family Physicians president, Dr. Mekalai Kumanan. “System-wide issues are stretching family doctors far beyond capacity. Biden’s FBI has announced that they believe the would-be assassin at former President Trump’s Pennsylvania rally on Saturday acted alone.

The statement comes despite the bureau’s inability to access data from the suspect’s cell phone, which has been sent to Quantico for further examination.

Kevin Rojek, FBI Special Agent in Charge Pittsburgh, said that the information currently available to the bureau suggests that there is no further public safety concern. However, he also noted that the investigation is still in its early stages, according to Fox News.

Edmonton remains Alberta’s municipality with the most opioid-related deaths, according to recently released provincial data.

While Edmonton tops the list, both the city and the province as a whole have seen a decrease in opioid-related deaths when compared to the same period last year.

Opioid-related deaths in Alberta fell from 436 between Oct. and Dec. 2023 to 355 between Jan. and Mar. 2024, an 18.6% decrease. During the same three-month period in 2023, Alberta saw 442 opioid-related deaths, decreasing 19.7%.

2023 saw a record number of Albertans die from opioid overdoses. In 2023, a total of 2,059 Albertans were killed by drug overdoses, with 1,868 of those deaths being from opioids.

However, Hunter Baril, press secretary for the minister of mental health and addictions, said that the early data released for 2024 is a promising sign.

Quebec takes more than it gives and Alberta is punching above its weight. These are the takeaways from a new Angus Reid poll on “confederational fairness.”

More Canadians believe that Quebec receives a disproportionate benefit from the nation, while Alberta is the province considered by most Canadians to get a “raw deal,” meaning it gives more to the federation than it receives.

The polling comes as provincial and territorial leaders meet in Halifax for the 2024 Council of the Federation, a biannual meeting to promote cooperation.

42% of Canadians said Quebec benefits disproportionately from its place in the nation. Conversely, 23% said Alberta gives more than it receives, ten points higher than any other province.

Alberta Institute Peter McCaffrey says this isn’t just a perception, but a fact.

“The net difference between total federal tax collected and total federal expenditures in Alberta is approximately $20 billion per year,” said McCaffrey.

While Alberta and Quebec sit on the two poles of the spectrum, residents in Saskatchewan “are most likely to feel little benefit and high levels of angst,” reads the study.

“The figures are closer in Saskatchewan, but it’s important to remember that the unfairness extends not only to direct financial transfers, but also to differences in how people, businesses, and industries are treated in different parts of the country,” said McCaffrey.

A mere 2% of Saskatchewan’s residents said they felt they got an extra advantage from being in Confederation. Conversely, 58% said they got a “raw deal,” resulting in a net alienation score of -55%, followed by Alberta at -41%. The lowest alienation score came from Quebec, where 19% felt they got an extra advantage, and 31% said they had a raw deal, resulting in a net score of -12%. Continue...

Between his friendship with a Conservative MP and criticism of the Liberal government, the Senator Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump picked to be his running mate is no stranger to Canadian politics.

At the Republican National Convention, the former President announced that Ohio Senator and former US Marine J.D. Vance would be his VP pick in his 2024 presidential bid. Although a prominent voice in American conservative politics, Vance hasn’t shied away from chiming in on Canadian issues over the last couple of years.

During the 2022 Freedom Convoy protests in Ottawa, Vance was outspoken against the Liberal government’s heavy-handed response to the Canadian truckers’ protest against COVID-19 mandates.

“The Canadian truckers have killed zero people and are being treated like terrorists in their own country,” Vance said on X in February 2022.

In reference to the freezing of Freedom Convoy funds, Vance pointed to Vice President Kamala Harris’s financial support for a Black Lives Matter fund, which bailed out individuals arrested at violent riots. Some of those released had previously been charged with violent offences, including murder, sexual assault and kidnapping.

“18 months ago, BLM rioters killed 20 people and were bailed out of prison by the future vice president of the United States. It’s time for conservatives to get serious,” he said.

When Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland announced that the Liberals would freeze the bank accounts of Freedom Convoy participants, Vance spoke out about what he believed to be government overreach.

“This is why crypto is taking off. The regime will cut off your access to banking if you have the wrong politics,” he said.

In response to the Ottawa police’s Feb. 18 announcement that they would arrest journalists remaining at the protest after it was declared illegal, Vance said Canada was a cautionary tale of democracy under attack.

“What’s happening in Canada is a far greater assault on democracy than anything the Left has whined about the last few years. It could happen here if we don’t elect people who defend our voters,” he said.

“What the hell is happening in Canada?” Vance said another time, remarking on the rise of anti-Christian violence in Canada after another Catholic church burnt down in rural Saskatchewan.

The church burning was suspected to be arson in the wake of media and government announcements that unmarked graves of genocide victims were found at residential schools. However, no bodies have been found at the alleged sites.

According to True North’s incident map, over 100 churches have been vandalized or burned since the announcement of the supposed finding of unmarked graves.

Vance also has connections to the riding of Durham’s recently elected Conservative MP Jamil Jivani. The two were “best friends” in law school at Yale University, according to an article written by Jivani when he was a columnist for the National Post.

Jivani said the two met at a cheese and wine-tasting event at their law school’s orientation, which they both felt out of place because of their humble background.

Notably, former Republican nomination candidate Vivek Ramaswamy attended law school at Yale simultaneously and had good things to say about the Ohio senator from their time together.

“So proud of my friend, classmate, and fellow southwest Ohioan today. We used to watch Bengals games at the bar in law school. It’s awesome we’re now here a decade later with JD joining the strongest presidential ticket in our lifetime,” Vivek said on X.

As the junior U.S. senator for Ohio, Vance has dealt with Canada as a trading partner since he took office in 2023. Ohio, the state with the third largest share of exports into Canada, makes up nearly 20% of America’s exports.

Canada’s ambassador to the U.S., Kirsten Hillman, said in a CBC interview that her team is “very happy” that Vance was Trump’s VP pick. She has worked with him in the past and knows that he values the trading relationship between the two neighbouring countries.

“We’re very happy to have someone on the ticket who understands Canada and the value of the Canada-US relationship. That’s a good thing for us that he has this high level of knowledge.”

The U.S. vice-presidential debates have yet to be scheduled, but election day is Nov. 5, 2024.

Executives at a British Columbia library decided to ban a book debunking the political narrative that hundreds of graves were supposedly discovered at former residential schools even before conducting a review of its contents.

According to internal emails obtained via an access to information request, Fraser Valley Regional Library’s management scrambled to respond to Canadians after they were flooded with requests to put “Grave Error: How the Media Misled Us (and the Truth about Residential Schools)” in circulation.

“Grave Error” Was published by True North in collaboration with Dorchester Books, edited by C.P. Champion and Tom Flanagan.

True North previously reported that at least two B.C. libraries, including Fraser Valley, had prohibited the bestselling book from its inventory.

One day after True North’s story, Fraser Valley Regional Library CEO Scott Hargrove emailed top library brass demanding strict media discipline, urging all communication requests on the controversy to be directed to him.

“If I’m unavailable, please wait until I am available – do not issue a statement until you talk to me,” said Hargrove.

“This is NOT a book ban,” Hargrove stressed. “Not choosing to purchase a book is not banning it, it is simply deciding it does not have a place in our collection at this time.”

Scores of European Parliament members have called on Brussels to punish Hungary after its prime minister, Viktor Orban, allegedly abused the bloc’s rotating presidency by launching his Ukraine “peace mission,” Politico reported on Tuesday.

The outlet published a letter signed by 93 MEPs and addressed to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Charles Michel, and European Parliament chief Roberta Metsola.

The signatories accused Orban of causing “significant damage by exploiting and abusing the role of the [EU] Council Presidency,” which Hungary assumed earlier this month. The focus of their ire was Orban’s “peace mission” which involved recent visits to Ukraine, Russia, China, and the US.

“Orban deliberately left the impression that he was acting on behalf of the entire European Union,” the letter claimed, despite the leader stressing that he was acting in his capacity as head of the Hungarian government before flying to Moscow earlier this month. MEPs said their assertion was “clearly evidenced” by the fact that senior EU officials had stressed that Orban did not represent the bloc “in any form” during his trips.

The Hungarian leader “is actively pursuing a policy agenda which is contrary to common EU positions,” and “this cannot be allowed to continue,” the MEPs said. They have urged the EU leadership to launch so-called Article 7 proceedings against Hungary.

It’s been mere days since former UK Labour PM Tony Blair, a globalization extraordinaire, and a (digital) ID cards enthusiast remarked that it might take “a little persuading” for his country’s new government to get with that particular program.

And it seems the new Labour government really only needed a little persuasion – after “rejecting” Blair’s call to implement digital ID cards on July 7, by July 10 there were statements by an influential party figure calling that path “inevitable.”

However, that figure – former Home Secretary David Blunkett – is not a member of the just-formed cabinet, and was with his statements challenging current Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, who opposed the idea.

But, Blunkett – who served in Blair’s government – said that “the government would have to streamline (growing digital records) into a single ID.”

Fast forward one week, and it seems Cooper’s cabinet colleague, Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology Peter Kyle, is starting to reverse course.

Somewhere in the meanwhile, Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds first said the government would be “looking at all sources of advice” – only to quickly backtrack and say there were no ID card plans.

Saskatchewan has agreed to secure half of the funds the feds say it owes for refusing to pay the federal carbon tax, though the legal battle isn’t over.

The province has accepted a security agreement with the Canadian Revenue Agency, committing to hold half of the funds the agency claims it owes until the dispute is resolved.

The province said Tuesday it would hold 50% of the roughly $56 million the CRA says it owes under the federal carbon tax scheme as a letter of credit.

The agreement was struck a week after Saskatchewan was granted an injunction to block the federal government from taking from its coffers. Saskatchewan earlier this year stopped collecting the federal carbon tax, prompting a standoff between the two levels of government culminating in Canada Revenue Agency taking the province to court earlier this month.

“Saskatchewan has offered to establish a letter of credit, which is common practice for companies and other large entities and explicitly provided for under the federal carbon tax legislation. It will remain in place until our dispute is determined by the Tax Court of Canada,” Saskatchewan Attorney General Bronwyn Eyre said in a statement.

The letter will be held until the dispute within the federal tax court is resolved. This will ensure that if the federal tax court rules against the province, it will have at least half of the funds owed set aside and ready to be paid.

Peel Regional Police have won a major battle against gun trafficking.

According to law enforcement, 97% of the illegal firearms seized during the operation known as Project Chrome were smuggled from the United States.

The police force announced on Wednesday that the project, which began in Sept. 2023, had wrapped up successfully.

Ten individuals were arrested and charged with 185 criminal offences, with some already released on bail.

Of the 71 firearms that were seized, firearm tracing confirmed that 69 of them were smuggled into Canada from the United States.

“We believe the firearms seized in this investigation would have ultimately wound up in the hands of offenders to be used in shootings, carjacking, home invasions, and other acts of violence,” said Detective Sergeant Earl Scott.

Scott presented the findings at a Wednesday press conference alongside other officers.

After a slew of text messages referring to “Randy” were presented to the committee, Anderson not only claimed that they were not referring to Boissonnault, but that they were a series of accidental text messages about someone with a different name.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow blame flooding in Ontario’s capital city on climate change but one expert says some places are better equipped to deal with heavy rain than others.

Neither leader gave specific evidence on how climate change affected the flooding but confidently assured that more would be expected as a result.

Kenneth Green, a senior fellow at the Fraser Institute and Frontier Centre for Public Policy has written extensively on public policy and he told True North that Chow was discussing adaptation more than additional greenhouse gas reduction measures, such as a further increase to the carbon tax.

A market-based “adaptation” measure would include creating incentives for people to keep more of their land permeable to water penetration, rather than paved over with impermeable materials, Green explained.

“An adaptationist response to climate risk is, I think, far more rational than the idea of reducing GHG emissions, so the more the government focuses on things like this, the better,” he said

Green has warned that “Canadians will pay dearly for Ottawa’s carbon tax,” estimating that it will cause a 1.8% drop in GDP and a loss of 185,000 jobs by 2030.

A firm specializing in satellite imagery analysis of tanker movements reported on X early Friday that two oil tankers collided in one of the world's busiest waterways east of Singapore, sparking fires on both vessels.

TankerTrackers said (AIS) data, which broadcasts vessel coordinates to track vessel movements and support maritime safety, shows the "Oil-laden Panamax-sized tanker HAFNIA NILE (9766217) had knocked into the starboard bow of the empty dark fleet VLCC called CERES I (9229439)."

The collision between Hafnia Nile, a Singapore-flagged refined-products tanker, and Ceres I, a crude oil tanker sailing under the flag of Sao Tome & Principe, occurred "in the international waters of the Riau archipelago this morning," TankerTrackers explained, adding that Hafnia Nile hit Ceres I at a speed of around 14.2 knots at the time of the incident.

A group representing Canada-wide electricity providers told Environment Canada that it has failed to hold up its end of the bargain by jeopardizing the affordability and reliability of the country’s electrical grid.

The president and CEO of Electricity Canada, Francis Bradley, wrote a letter to Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and various other ministers about “profound concerns” regarding the proposed Clean Electricity Regulations.

“Our goal with this letter is to inform you about the failure of this process, highlight its potential impacts on the sector and on the Canadian economy, and propose solutions to move forward. We do not make these statements lightly,” reads the letter obtained by True North.

Electricity Canada has consulted with Environment Canada about Canada’s proposed electricity regulations under a non-disclosure agreement since Feb. 2024.

The non-disclosure agreement was intended to allow Environment Canada to share modelling and assumptions to enable industry feedback on carbon reductions, reliability, and cost.

Electricity Canada said that Environment Canada agreed to an aggressive schedule of meetings and workshops when signing the non-disclosure agreement.

“However, the department has repeatedly delayed sharing the information for which the NDA process was intended. Despite repeated attempts over the last four months, as of this writing, ECCC has not yet provided their modelling and the assumptions contained material factual errors, making it impossible for industry to provide meaningful feedback,” reads the letter.

A man who was arrested and charged for filming police outside a Toronto police station has had his charges withdrawn and is now seeking damages from the department.

James Hearn was charged with criminal harassment after police approached him while he was filming a Toronto police station from a city sidewalk.

He was arrested after an officer claimed to feel “harassed and intimidated” by his conduct.

The officer demanded to know why he was filming but Hearn refused to answer, which led to him being arrested, charged and held for bail.

“Mr. Hearn was charged with criminal harassment and intimidation for filming the outside of 52 Division in Toronto after a police officer who was pulling into the underground parking garage complained about feeling harassed and intimidated by Hearn’s conduct,” Hearn’s defence lawyer, Alan Honner, told True North.

Following his arrest, Hearn was searched and had his recording equipment, including the smartphone he’d used to capture the interaction between him and the complainant police officer, seized.

The LCBO has announced a “tentative agreement” with the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, ending the strike by next Tuesday.

According to the LCBO, the strike will end at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, July 22, and staff will “return to business as usual” on Tuesday, though the terms of the agreement have yet to be ratified.

“We recognize the disruption the strike caused for our employees, partners, and customers who rely on our services, and we thank everyone for their continued patience and understanding as we begin resuming regular operations,” the public company said in a release.

The LCBO said it would share further details once the agreement is ratified.
