Bank hit with $135.6 million in penalties stemming from 2020 order. CEO admits ‘there are areas where we have not made progress quickly enough. Government regulators on Wednesday hit Citigroup Inc. with $135.6 million in fines, saying the bank had run afoul of a 2020 order telling the company to tighten up its standards for managing risk and data quality. The penalties were issued by the Federal Reserve board and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. The actions also came ahead of Citigroup’s second-quarter earnings and conference call on Friday, when the issue could be a bigger topic of discussion. “Citigroup has made insufficient progress remediating its problems with data-quality management and failed to implement compensating controls to manage its ongoing risk,” the Fed said in a statement on Wednesday. “The board continues to monitor Citigroup’s actions to comply with the 2020 action, which remains in effect.”

Video taken at the event showed Banks being asked how she felt about Trump’s campaign speech. She also happily posed for photos with people at the rally, including music promoter Jake Inphamous.

Banks re-shared a post in her Instagram stories hinting that Trump had invited her and a friend to his rally.

Banks has been publicly supporting Trump for months and was seen praising Trump in an interview last November with the Standard. She said she endorsed Trump’s 2024 campaign, and added,“He’s just fucking funnyyy.

She added that putting Biden up for re-election is “elder abuse.”

At the same event, the former president brought his youngest son, Barron, to the stage. And the youngster received a standing ovation and raucous cheers from the crowd.

Mediaite Caught Lying in Blatant Distortion of Transcript of J.D. Vance Interview in Effort to Interfere in Donald Trump’s Veepstakes

Mediaite, a leftist publication, has been caught lying in a blatant distortion of a transcript of an interview that now-Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) did years ago on MSNBC in an obvious attempt to interfere in former President Donald Trump’s vice presidential selection process.

The left-leaning anti-Trump publication ran a headline on Wednesday as part of the globalists’ last-ditch effort to stop Vance from getting selected as Trump’s running mate in the 2024 presidential election that, if true, would certainly make heads in Trump world turn: “JD Vance Said He Believes Trump’s Sexual Assault Accuser in Unearthed Interview.”

The problem with Mediaite’s headline — and its story — is that this is not an accurate reflection of what Vance said in a 2016 interview with then-MSNBC host Chris Matthews.

The actual transcript of the MSNBC interview from the October 12, 2016, Hardball show — which has hardly been “unearthed,” for what it is worth, as it is literally on the MSNBC website for anyone to find, but that is beside the point — shows Matthews playing a clip of Jessica Leeds, a woman who accused Trump of groping her, and then asking Vance for reaction.

Here is Matthews’s exact question: “What do you think of this? This is something, it’s sort of interesting evocative of the time because of the time because we used to say stewardess first of all. That was a flight attendant. It just gives us a sense of history. But this woman is not a showoff. She’s just telling what happened so we can know it.”

Here is Vance’s exact response: “Yes, yes. And it’s sort of – – it makes me think that at fundamental, this is sort of he said/she said, right? And at the end of the day, do you believe Donald Trump who always tells the truth? Just kidding, or do you believe that woman on the tape? And I —”

That is the end of the exchange. Vance literally said in his response that this was a “he said/she said” disagreement and questioned which person between the two people— Trump or Leeds — someone should believe.

Vance’s argument, for whatever it is worth, was far more pro-Trump than most MSNBC guests at the time, even though he was still a Trump critic back then. His conversion from critic to strong supporter of Trump is a widely known story, but the notion he was saying, as Mediaite claimed in this headline, that he believed the accuser is just not true because that is not what he said.

Where things get particularly interesting is that the author of the piece,Colby Hall, first off, did not, per multiple sources familiar with the matter, reach out to Vance’s team for comment ahead of time on the story. While it is a publicly available transcript on MSNBC’s website, Hall did not even include the video of the interview for the story, and mischaracterizing Vance’s comments like this is a significant development. What is more, in non-off-record conversations with Vance’s staff after the publication of the story, Hall admitted that headlines are not the full story — he literally told, per communications reviewed by Breitbart News, a Vance staffer that he “surmised” what he thought Vance meant to write the headline on this piece rather than accurately letting Vance’s word speak for themselves.

This instance is just the latest in a long line of examples of establishment media forces desperate to stop Trump from picking Vance as his running mate, as, in recent weeks, the New York Post’s editorial board and the Wall Street Journal’s editorial board both attacked Vance and pushed other possible candidates.

A plurality of 45 percent of voters agree that there is no way to hate the media enough.

Rasmussen Reports questioned 1,079 U.S. votersbetween June 25-27, 2024, about the state of the American media. Those dates are important because the survey was taken before the debate between His Fraudulency Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. One can only imagine what those numbers would look like now that we know the corporate media have spent years covering up Biden’s mental and physical deterioration.

Allow me to get right to the best part…Rasmussen asked, “Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: ‘No matter how much you hate the media, it’s not enough?’”

A plurality of 45 percent said they strongly (21 percent) or somewhat (24 percent) agreed, while only 28 percent said they strongly (12 percent) or somewhat (16 percent) disagreed.Only 28 percent disagreed(!!!), while 27 percent were unsure.

To recap…

A whopping 72 percent of those polled either said that you can’t hate the media enough or they weren’t sure if you could ever hate the media enough.

Rasmussen also askedif media bias was getting better or worse. Once again, this poll was taken before the American people learned that the corporate media have been covering up Biden’s mental collapse…Still,61 percent said it was getting worse, while only nine percent said it was getting better. Twenty-seven percent said it was about the same.

Rasmussen then asked about which “news organization do you trust the most,”and, of the options offered, Fox News dominated, with 26 percent. In second place, 20 percent answered correctly and said “none.” From there…CNN: 12 percent, MSNBC: ten percent, ABC News: nine percent, Newsmax: eight percent, NBC News: four percent, and NewsNation: one percent.

New figures published by S&P Global Intelligence show that 75 companies filed for bankruptcy in June, the highest number recorded in a single month since early 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. That pushed this year’s total number of bankruptcies so far to 346, which is notably higher than comparable levels seen in the past 13 years.

Before this, the highest half-year figure recorded was in 2010, with 437 companies filing for bankruptcy from January through June.

A 2023 survey conducted by Payroll.org highlighted that 78% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, a 6% increase from the previous year. In other words, more than three-quarters of Americans struggle to save or invest after paying for their monthly expenses.

Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), who is running for the U.S. Senate in Michigan, told donors on Tuesday that private polling has revealed that former President Donald Trump leads President Joe Biden in the Wolverine State.

“Right now, President Biden is behind Trump in all of our polling, and this Senate race is in a dead heat,” Slotkin said Tuesday during a video call with donors, which the New York Times obtained.

The Michigan Senate Democrat candidate also appeared to attack Biden by “sarcastically” noting that she was running for the open Michigan Senate seat only because Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), who is 74 years old, was doing a “radical thing and passing the torch.”

A spokesman for Slotkin did not weigh in regarding the comments.

The New York Times reported:

Ms. Slotkin is expected to face Mike Rogers, a Republican former congressman who has emerged as his party’s leading contender. An average of public polls in Michigan from the data-driven news site FiveThirtyEight shows a tossup in the presidential race in Michigan, while several recent polls show Ms. Slotkin with a slight advantage.

A number of Democrats have called for Mr. Biden to step asidein the presidential race since his disastrous debate performance last month*. Mr. Biden has insisted he will remain a candidate, despite the hand-wringing from Democrats in Michigan and beyond.

Leftist panic is beginning to set in in other states traditionally dominated by Democrats, as one Democrat official said New York has become a “battleground state.”

“We’re still acting like this is a one-party state, which for pretty much 20, 25 years it has been. I truly believe we’re a battleground state now,” Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine (D) said.

SHOCKING footage has captured the moment triple murder suspect Kyle Clifford was led away in handcuffs after cops swarmed a cemetery.

Clifford, 26, was seen being bundled into the back of an ambulance this afternoon after armed police swooped on a cemetery in Hilly Fields in Enfield, North London.

Clifford, 26, is suspected of the murders of three women at their home in Bushey, Hertfordshire.

Armed officers and a specialist search dog tracked the suspect of the horrific crossbow massacre down to a cemetery yards from his Enfield home.

Video shows a handcuffed Clifford being stretchered out of the cemetery by emergency services as the major manhunt came to an end.

An ambulance with sirens blaring was then seen leaving the graveyard this afternoon before cops confirmed the suspect had been caught.

It comes after chilling footage emerged appearing to show manhunt suspect Kyle Clifford striding away from the triple murder scene with a THREE FOOT crossbow.

The US Justice Department has seized two US-based domains used by Russian threat actors to create fake profiles on X that would spread disinformation in the United States and abroad. This bot farm was created and operated via Meliorator, an AI-enhanced software package.

"Development of the social media bot farm was organized by an individual identified in Russia. In early 2022, Individual A worked as the deputy editor-in-chief at RT, a state-run Russian news organization based in Moscow," the DoJ claims.

"Since at least 2022, RT leadership sought the development of alternative means for distributing information beyond RT's standard television news broadcasts. In response, Individual A led the development of software that was able to create and to operate a social media bot farm."

"The identified bot personas associated with the Meliorator tool are capable of deploying content similar to typical social media users, such as generating original posts, following other users, 'liking,' commenting, reposting, and obtaining followers; mirroring disinformation of other bot personas through their messaging, replies, reposts, and biographies; perpetuating the use of pre-existing false narratives to amplify Russian disinformation; and formulating messaging, to include the topic and framing, based on the specific archetype of the bot," they explained.

"In early 2023, with the approval and financial support of the Presidential Administration of Russia, a Russian FSB officer created and led a private intelligence organization, as explained in the affidavits. The P.I.O.'s membership was comprised of, among others, employees at RT, including Individual A. The true purpose of the P.I.O. was to advance the mission of the FSB and the Russian government, including by spreading disinformation through the social media accounts created by the bot farm. According to the affidavits, FSB Officer 1, Individual A, and other members of the PIO had access to the social media bot farm," the DoJ says.

The DoJ has searched nearly 1000 suspected X bot accounts, which have been consequently suspended by the social network for terms of service violations.

The tool has been used by Russia's FSB services since 2022 to generate mass quantities of seemingly-authentic social media profiles.

The bot farm was also used to spread videos claiming that the number of foreign fighters fighting for the Ukrainian forces was significantly lower than public estimates. Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco stated, “Today’s action demonstrates that the Justice Department and our partners will not tolerate Russian government actors and their agents deploying AI to sow disinformation and fuel division among Americans.”

Justice Department Seizes Associated Domains

In relation to the joint action by intelligence agencies, the U.S. Justice Department announced the seizure of two related domain names, and 968 social media accounts used in malign influence operations. According to the press release, the bot farm was developed by an individual identified as Individual A, who worked as the deputy editor-in-chief at RT, a state-run Russian news organization.

The publication includes IP addresses, SSL certificates, mail server domains, and related details associated with the infrastructure of the Meliorator bot network.

Operators avoid detection by using a backend code designed to auto-assign a proxy IP address to the AI generated persona based on their assumed location.”

The tool was developed by several other individuals, who also purchased infrastructure for the bot farm.

America’s intelligence agencies have alleged for the third election in a row that Moscow favors Donald Trump (Avril Haines a protégé of HRC and others)

Russia is attempting to sway the US presidential election in favor of Donald Trump, American intelligence officials have claimed.Similar allegations by US spies over the last eight years have been proven false.(But it works on those that believed it in the first place and still do)

In a briefing to reporters on Wednesday, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) alleged that the Kremlin has mounted a “whole-of-government” effort to turn public opinion against President Joe Biden and his fellow Democrats. Asked whether Russia was seeking to boost Trump’s chances of defeating Biden, one of the officials replied:“We have not observed a shift in Russia’s preferences for the presidential race from past elections, given the role the US is playing with regard to Ukraine and broader policy toward Russia.”

During the 2016 and 2020 elections, US intelligence agencies repeatedly claimed that Moscow was deploying hackers and using “information warfare” to swing the vote in favor of Trump.

None of these claims have been proven true. The US’ 17 intelligence agenciesissued a statement in January 2017 alleging that Russian President Vladimir Putin had personally “approved and directed” a cyber-warfare and influence campaign against Hillary Clinton, which was contradicted by Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report two years later.

The internet is buzzing. For the first time since 2016, President Trump has rolled out a new party platform that the GOP has wholeheartedly embraced. From what people are saying online, it’s a massive hit with conservatives too. At its core is the America First principle and a renewed focus on the “forgotten men and women” whom Trump supported in 2016 and whom Joe Biden dismantled in 2020.

Dedicated to the “To the Forgotten Men and Women of America,” the Republican Party’s 2024 platform reads like the transcript of a Trump rally speech.

The Republican National Committee’s Platform Committee adopted former President Donald Trump’s platform, a document that leans into Trump’s preferred “America First” stances and steers away from traditional GOP social issues.

The platform starts with 20 promises, largely pulling from the tag lines of the former president, including “STOP THE MIGRANT INVASION” and the simplistic “END INFLATION.” Trump’s campaign sought to pare down the party platform.

More recently, Trump has made sure to try to distance himself from the controversial (and lengthy) Project 2025 policy document put together by some of his allies.

Notably, the promises don’t mention anything about abortion, as Trump attempts to de-emphasize the issue and appeal to swing voters. In the entire platform, the word appears just once, in a statement about the party’s dedication to protecting “the issue of life.” It reads: “We will oppose Late Term Abortion.”

After appointing the Supreme Court justices who helped overturn the constitutional right to abortion, he’s said the issue should now be up to states.

Most agree that this is the best GOP platform of our lifetime. It’s thoroughly America-focused, a continuation of Trump’s initial plans, and it’s also meant to clean up the catastrophic mess left by the Biden regime.

Here’s an honest question: What’s all the negative fuss about, anyway?

KFC Canada is going viral after customers are realizing the popular fried chicken chain has been serving halal meat for the past two months.

#BoycottKFC is trending on social media with screenshots of a statement by KFC Canada dated May 8 detailing plans to introduce inclusive menu options.

As part of the initiative, the American fast food chain collaborated with its KFC Canada Muslim team to include halal menu options as of May 15 across all KFC Canada stores in Ontario, except Thunder Bay and Ottawa.

As part of the initiative, restaurant staff has been trained to accommodate this fairly recent change, and have partnered with Halal product suppliers like Maple Lodge Farms, and Zabiha Halal.

Additionally, the restaurant has discontinued pork products at all locations except those co-branded with Taco Bell.

While some find the move acceptable, noting it allows “more people to dine comfortably at KFC,” others criticize it as “totally unacceptable.”

Many are also questioning why Thunder Bay and Ottawa have been excluded.

“Odd they leave out Ottawa considering its large Muslim population,” one individual said.

What is Halal meat?

Halal meat refers to meat that is permissible according to Islamic dietary laws. It involves ethical treatment of animals and thorough removal of blood during slaughter, ensuring tender and wholesome meat, as defined by the Halal Meat Association, Canada.

Many are also pointing out how they will be switching to other fast food chains like Popeyes or Mary Brown’s.

Keep in mind they’re not labeling them as extremist organizations (which would still be crazy), but as terrorist organizations.

Those criteria are highly subjective in theory, and they are purely partisan in practice. For example, last year, Daily Wire host Matt Walsh was fully demonetized on YouTube, a GARM member. Why? For quote-unquote misgendering, which to GARM is to say that men are not women. Perfectly obvious facts now run afoul of GARM's censorship standards.

“Companies targeted by GARM, like the Daily Wire, Breitbart, Fox News, and so many others, reach hundreds of millions of people with opinions and beliefs long established as within the mainstream of American conservative thought. GARM and its members have no respect for the beliefs of those people. They would like them marginalized or squashed. It's time to stand up for the First Amendment in this Congress.

“Congress can do so in two ways. First, Congress must investigate the informal and perhaps formal arrangements between censorship cartels like GARM and executive branch agencies. The Daily Wire has already filed a federal lawsuit against the State Department for allegedly doing just this. Second, Congress can itself stop engaging in violation of free speech principles. Two weeks ago, writing a dissent in Murthy versus Missouri, Justice Alito condemned what he called sophisticated and coercive government campaigns against free speech.

“Members of this committee have engaged in precisely such campaigns. When Congressman Schiff speaks about targeting social media companies that must be, quote, ‘pulled and dragged into this era of corporate responsibility because they are too tolerant of misinformation,’ he knows what he is doing. He is participating in a sophisticated, coercive campaign against free speech. When Congresswoman Jayapal blames social media for placing America at the precipice of a democratic crisis and calls on them to target what they deem hate groups, she also knows what she is doing. She is participating in a sophisticated, coercive campaign against free speech. When Congressman Hank Johnson says, quote, ‘We need a constitutional amendment to allow the legislature to control the so-called free speech rights of corporations,’ he also knows what he is doing.

“We all know what these government actors, what some people in this room are doing. You're using the tacit threat of government action to compel private companies to throttle viewpoints you don't particularly like. The First Amendment was not designed to enable workarounds by elected officials. It was directed at Congress, at you. And you're abdicating your fundamental duty when you exert pressure on private companies to censor speech. Some in this room have been doing just that for years. We in the non-legacy media have been feeling the effects. In the name of the Constitution and the name of democracy, this should stop.”

Treasurys aggressively rallied Thursday morning, sending yields tumbling, after June’s consumer-price index showed more signs of cooling inflation and bolstered the market’s expectation for a Federal Reserve interest-rate cut by September.

Also known as NGC 5139, at a distance of 15,000 light-years it's the largest and brightest of 200 or so known globular clusters that roam the halo of our Milky Way galaxy. Though most star clusters consist of stars with the same age and composition, the enigmatic Omega Cen exhibits the presence of different stellar populations with a spread of ages and chemical abundances. In fact, Omega Cen may be the remnant core of a small galaxy merging with the Milky Way. With a yellowish hue, Omega Centauri's red giant stars are easy to pick out in this sharp telescopic view. A two-decade-long exploration of the dense star cluster with the Hubble Space Telescope has revealed evidence for a massive black hole near the center of Omega Centauri.

Ian Bremmer, President of the Eurasia Group, has told MSNBC that fears about Joe Biden‘s re-election prospects were prevalent among foreign leaders attending the NATO summit in Washington D.C.

He reports that the 81-year-old Democrat failed to recognize at least one individual he knew quite well, adding to concerns regarding his ability to serve an0ther term in office.

As Biden hosts the 75th anniversary of NATO in Washington, D.C., his re-election chances have become a major topic. Bremmer notes that conversations he had with various NATO leaders suggest there is a general sentiment that Biden’s cognitive abilities have significantly deteriorated.

Some NATO members seem to be preparing for a second Donald Trump term administration already. Defense ministers from the Baltic States signaled they are anticipating the America First leader’s return to office during the first days of the summit.

Bremmer highlights that NATO leaders still see the U.S. as the linchpin of the alliance and are fearful about ongoing U.S. commitments.

The U.S. is slated to contribute $755 billion to NATO in 2024, equivalent to 3.38 percent of its GDP.

After a disastrous debate performance against Trump, Democrats such as Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) have urged Biden to consider stepping aside.

Reports have since piled up that Biden‘s team hid the extent of his decline from the public, leading prominent Democrat allies to abandon the octogenarian.

The National Pulse reported on Wednesday that Hollywood liberal George Clooney now believes the 81-year-old incumbent cannot win re-election. Clooney, widely viewed as a close friend of former president Barack Obama, hosted a fundraiser for Biden just weeks ago, and admits he seemed as diminished at that event as he did in the presidential debate.

The dollar dropped on Thursday after data showed that headline consumer prices unexpectedly fell in June, with the Japanese yen at one point gaining more than 2% as traders priced in the likelihood that the Federal Reserve will begin cutting interest rates in September. The sharp gain in the yen increased speculation that the Bank of Japan may be intervening to shore up the currency, which fell to a 38-year low against the greenback last week. The yen has suffered from a wide interest rate differential with the United States and positions betting on further losses in the Japanese currency versus the dollar "have piled up", Englander said. But today's CPI data indicates that a September rate cut is "highly probable", and so "that rate differential story erodes," he said.

Traders are now pricing in a 91% probability of a rate cut in September, up from 75% on Wednesday, according to the CME Group's FedWatch Tool. A second cut is also likely by December. The dollar index was last down 0.66% at 104.28 and got as low as 104.07, the lowest since June 7.

Against the yen , the dollar fell 1.95% to 158.49 and got as low as 157.4, the weakest since June 17.

The euro gained 0.45% to $1.088 and reached $1.090, the highest since June 7.

The bright red flashes (more easily seen by clicking on the photo to see a larger version) are a less understood phenomena associated with powerful lightning events and appear high above the clouds in the mesosphere.

Transient Luminous Events (TLEs), including red sprites, are colorful bursts of energy that appear above storms as a result of lightning activity occurring in and below storms on Earth.

Crew members typically capture TLEs with wide focal lengths during Earth timelapses. Instruments mounted outside station, like Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor (ASIM), can capture a range of data for researchers on Earth using cameras, photometers, X-ray and gamma-ray detectors. NASA Deputy Administrator Strengthens Ties in Japan, Republic of Korea

NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy will visit Japan and the Republic of Korea beginning Thursday, July 11, to underscore the critical role of international cooperation in advancing space exploration and technology development.

During her week-long visit to the region, Melroy will engage with ministers and other senior government officials in both countries, including leaders from JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) and KASA (Korea AeroSpace Administration) to strengthen partnerships and highlight civil space cooperation.

In Tokyo, Melroy will participate in the Secure World Foundation’s 6th Summit for Space Sustainability, highlighting NASA’s leadership in responsible and sustainable operations amid rapid technological advancements, many of them championed by the agency.

NASA and JAXA are working to advance sustainable human exploration of the Moon. NASA announced in April that Japan will design, develop, and operate a pressurized rover for exploration of the lunar surface.

The activity is part of a shared goal for a Japanese national to be the first non-American to land on the Moon as part of a future Artemis mission, assuming important benchmarks are achieved.

In addition, NASA and JAXA are advancing goals in climate research and space science missions to benefit humanity.

Melroy also will speak alongside other space agency leaders at the 45th Scientific Assembly of the Committee on Space Research in Busan, Korea, emphasizing opportunities for international and commercial collaboration in space research.

The visit to Korea coincides with the recent establishment of KASA and builds upon decades of collaboration with NASA in exploration, Earth and space science, and aeronautics.

NASA’s Hubble Finds Strong Evidence for Intermediate-Mass Black Hole in Omega Centauri

Most known black holes are either extremely massive, like the supermassive black holes that lie at the cores of large galaxies, or relatively lightweight, with a mass of under 100 times that of the Sun.

Intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) are scarce, however, and are considered rare "missing links" in black hole evolution.

Now, an international team of astronomers has used more than 500 images from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope — spanning two decades of observations — to search for evidence of an intermediate-mass black hole by following the motion of seven fast-moving stars in the innermost region of the globular star cluster Omega Centauri.

These stars provide new compelling evidence for the presence of the gravitational pull from an intermediate-mass black hole tugging on them. Only a few other IMBH candidates have been found to date.

Omega Centauri consists of roughly 10 million stars that are gravitationally bound. The cluster is about 10 times as massive as other big globular clusters — almost as massive as a small galaxy.

Among the many questions scientists want to answer: Are there any IMBHs, and if so, how common are they? Does a supermassive black hole grow from an IMBH? How do IMBHs themselves form? Are dense star clusters their favored home?

The astronomers have now created an enormous catalog for the motions of these stars, measuring the velocities for 1.4 million stars gleaned from the Hubble images of the cluster.

Most of these observations were intended to calibrate Hubble's instruments rather than for scientific use, but they turned out to be an ideal database for the team's research efforts.

"We discovered seven stars that should not be there," explained Maximilian Häberle of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Germany, who led this investigation. "They are moving so fast that they would escape the cluster and never come back.

The most likely explanation is that a very massive object is gravitationally pulling on these stars and keeping them close to the center. The only object that can be so massive is a black hole, with a mass at least 8,200 times that of our Sun."

Several studies have suggested the presence of an IMBH in Omega Centauri.

However, other studies proposed the mass could be contributed by a central cluster of stellar-mass black holes, and had suggested the lack of fast-moving stars above the necessary escape velocity made an IMBH less likely in comparison.

"This discovery is the most direct evidence so far of an IMBH in Omega Centauri," added team lead Nadine Neumayer of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Germany, who initiated the study, together with Anil Seth from the University of Utah, Salt Lake City.

"This is exciting because there are only very few other black holes known with a similar mass. The black hole in Omega Centauri may be the best example of an IMBH in our cosmic neighborhood."

If confirmed, at a distance of 17,700 light-years the candidate black hole resides closer to Earth than the 4.3-million-solar-mass black hole in the center of the Milky Way, located 26,000 light-years away.

Omega Centauri is visible from Earth with the naked eye and is one of the favorite celestial objects for stargazers living in the southern hemisphere.

Located just above the plane of the Milky Way, the cluster appears almost as large as the full Moon when seen from a dark rural area. It was first listed in Ptolemy’s catalog nearly 2,000 years ago as a single star.

Edmond Halley reported it as a nebula in 1677. In the 1830s the English astronomer John Herschel was the first to recognize it as a globular cluster.

The discovery paper led by Häberle et al. is published online today in the journal Nature.
