One-third of agriculture jobs and one-fifth of food and beverage jobs are at risk of being replaced by automation over the next decade, according to a new study released by the Conference Board of Canada.

When combining the number of employees in Canada working in the agriculture and food and beverage manufacturing sectors, a total of 563,000 Canadians worked in those industries in 2023, according to the report. Of these, 103,665 jobs in the agriculture sector and 56,130 jobs in the food and beverage manufacturing sector are at risk of automation in the next decade.

Jobs most vulnerable to automation include repetitive labour roles, such as livestock labourers, harvesting labourers, and labourers in food and beverage processing.

“In the agriculture industry, precision agriculture, advanced machinery, and sensor technology tools have the highest potential to automate repetitive tasks, improve efficiency, enable data-driven decision-making, and optimize resource management,” reads the report. Continue…

They emphasised the importance of expanding research to encompass entire families of pathogens that can infect humans – regardless of their perceived pandemic risk – as well as focusing on individual pathogens.

CEPI and WHO’s call was based on a report, which involved the collaboration of over 200 “scientists,” that further developed a strategy for searching for pathogens that can infect humans. The search for the next pandemic causing, or not, pathogen is prescience, or fortune-telling, from which only the vaccine industry can benefit.

Reminder: CEPI was conceived in 2015 and formally launched in 2017 at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Lion Electric announced on Tuesday that it would have to lay off 30% of its staff, around 300 employees. The company expects to save $25 million annually from the initiative, assuming the laid-off employees are not rehired. The most recent layoffs follow 220 employees previously being laid off in Feb. and Apr.

“Transition to electric is taking longer than initially expected, but transportation electrification is here to stay,” said CEO and Founder of Lion Electric, Marc Bedard. “It is with that mindset that we put together an action plan to adjust our cost structure to enable us to continue to support the increasing electric school bus demand and maintain our leadership position, while allowing us to keep supporting the truck operators in their electric transition and focus on our profitability objectives.”

The action plan includes the anticipated layoffs along with subleasing some facilities, selling battery packs to third parties, and cutting operational expenses such as logistic and consultant costs.

So many Canadians are relying on food banks amid the cost of living crisis that people south of the border have taken notice and responded with donations.

The U.S.-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints donated $2 million to Daily Food Bank, a non-denominational Christian charity organization that aims to end hunger in Toronto.

Canadians can expect to pay the price of a new digital tax implemented in late June that applies to revenues earned as far back as Jan. 1, 2022.

The Digital Services Tax Act is part of Bill C-59, which received Royal Assent on June 20, 2024. The Department of Finance said the 3% tax applies to large domestic and foreign businesses.

The annual 3% tax will apply to some Canadian-source digital services revenue generated from online marketplaces, advertising services and social media.

Federal Director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, Franco Terrazzano, told True North that other countries have imposed similar taxes, which have made the cost of living more expensive and passed the cost down to consumers.

“Trudeau should be doing everything he can to make life more affordable, but this digital services tax will mean higher prices for ordinary Canadians,” said Terrazzano. “The feds need to stop dreaming up new taxes and new ways to make life more expensive.” Continue…

In an updated travel advisory, Global Affairs Canada is urging Canadians to avoid all travel to Israel as the Middle Eastern conflict escalates.

The diplomatic agency issued the travel advisory on Saturday, citing “the ongoing regional armed conflict and the unpredictable security situation.” Formerly, the foreign service only advised against non-essential travel.

Tensions between Israel and Iran have increased rapidly following the killing of Fuad Shukr, a Hezbollah commander during an Israeli airstrike in Beirut, Lebanon last month.

Hezbollah is a military group allied with Hamas, and both are backed by Iran’s Islamist regime.

Israel alleges that Shukr was responsible for a rocket strike three days earlier on July 27 that killed 12 young people on a soccer field in the Golan Heights, an Israeli-occupied area.

However, Hezbollah has denied any involvement in the incident.

Ismail Haniyeh, a prominent political leader of Hamas, was also killed in Tehran, Iran’s capital only hours before Shurk in a separate targeted airstrike.

Three people have been hospitalized after 30 to 40 shots were fired in Montreal’s West Island on Sunday night.

Montreal police (SPVM) said that they received a 911 call from a person reporting that an argument had broken out and that there were gunshots potentially being fired at her home.

"One of the persons involved in the dispute left the residence on foot and crossed paths with a motorist," said the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI). "This person allegedly pointed a firearm at the motorist. The motorist left. The subject continued on foot and headed towards a second vehicle, near which there were three people."

The BEI noted that police officers then arrived on the scene and exchanged gunfire with the suspect.

"The subject was shot and seriously injured," the BEI said in a statement to CTV News, though the person is now in stable condition. “Two people in the vicinity of the vehicle were shot and seriously injured. Their condition is currently stable and there are no fears for their lives.”

'Consumers who have purchased this product should stop using the product, contact Nestlé Consumer Services for reimbursement and then dispose of the product,' reads the statement from Nestlé Canada.

Nestle Canada has announced that it will recall its Gerber brand’s Oat Banana and Mango Baby Cereal due to the possibility of Cronobacter contamination.

The statement released on Sunday says that those cereals will be pulled from all in-store and online retailers.

The recall includes baby cereal products sold in 227-gram packages with the lot code 3334007809 and the expiry date of May 30, 2025.

No illnesses or complaints have been reported so far in relation to the recall.

“Consumers who have purchased this product should stop using the product, contact Nestlé Consumer Services for reimbursement and then dispose of the product. The contact information is as follows,” the statement reads. “… We have been working with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and are immediately informing our customers who received these products and arranging for them be removed from store shelves.”

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced that the recall was prompted by test results, reports Global News. A food safety investigation is currently underway, which could result in additional recalls.

It’s the second recall affecting baby cereals in as many weeks, after last week's recall of Baby Gourmet Organic’s Banana Raisin Oatmeal.

Symptoms of Cronobacter infection in infants include fever, poor feeding, excessive crying, very low energy and seizures.

Canadian taxpayers paid a premium on COVID ventilators from CAE Incorporated of Montréal, formerly Canadian Aviation Electronics (CAE). Almost all 8,200 units were "slated for sale as scrap metal."

Records show the medical supplier received $231,650,000 for ventilators at $28,250 per unit—the highest unit cost during the pandemic.

Then-Industry Minister Navdeep Bains signed the contract following a private conversation with the company’s CEO, reported Blacklock’s Reporter.

"When it comes to CAE, it’s a great Canadian success story," Bains testified at 2020 hearings of the Commons industry committee. "This is a company that is a world leader in flight simulations," he said.

The Québec-made ventilators were later scrapped for metal, Access To Information records show.

"They have the history, the technical know-how, the understanding," Bains testified.

The military-age men were found hiding inside the truck behind a haul of large pieces of beef. The meat truck was heading for Moldova and was operated by the two foreigners, the police have said, without elaborating on the nationality of the suspected smugglers.

Mali has accused Kiev of violating its sovereignty and supporting international terrorism

Mali’s interim government has announced that it is breaking off diplomatic relations with Ukraine. The measure was taken in response to officials in Kiev demonstrating support for Tuareg militants and admitting to Ukraine’s complicity in a recent terrorist attack that killed Malian soldiers and Russian military contractors.

Last month, a military convoy carrying Malian defense and security forces and Russian Wagner Group contractors was ambushed by Tuareg insurgents in the vicinity of the village of Tinzaouaten near the border with Algeria. Scores of servicemen were killed and multiple trucks were destroyed by the militants.

Following the attack, a spokesman for Ukraine’s military intelligence service (GUR), Andrey Yusov, stated on Ukrainian TV that his agents assisted the rebels with “necessary information, and not just information, which enabled a successful military operation against Russian war criminals,” and vowed that “there will be more to come.” Ukraine’s embassy in Dakar posted the interview on its Facebook page, along with a comment from Ambassador Yury Pivovarov, who said, “there will certainly be other results.” The video has since been deleted.

The Kremlin has announced that its forces thwarted a major ground assault from Ukraine forces into Russia's southwestern Kursk region. President Vladimir Putin called it a "large-scale provocation" which is being defended against for a second day. While the Ukrainian side has remained silent, that fighting in the area of the incursion has raged for two days straight does indeed suggest an attack which is large in scope.

Putin further described the "indiscriminate shelling of civilian buildings, residential houses, ambulances with different types of weapons" amid the assault, and called an emergency meeting of his top defense and security officials. The military is further sending assistance to the Kursk region, which lies over 300 miles from Moscow.

Russian state media has detailed that the cross-border assault began at 5:30am Tuesday morning and involved in initial wave of up to 1,000 militants. Kremlin sources further say that the Ukrainian side suffered at least 315 casualties, including at least 100 killed and 215 wounded.

The chief of the Russian General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, in a briefing given to Putin said the goal of the Ukrainian operation was to take over the Sudzhinsky district of Kursk Region. Continue…

A WestJet Airlines passenger denied boarding due to a mask mandate lost a bid for damages, forcing him to drive 740 km to keep a doctor’s appointment.

Blacklock's Reporter says the Canadian Transportation Agency ruled Tuesday that WestJet had no alternative despite the passenger's situation as a cancer survivor.

“Passengers are responsible for ensuring they meet all documentary requirements to travel,” the Agency stated in Decision No. 11-AT-A-2024. “WestJet communicated the requirements about mask exemptions to passengers before travel via its website.”

The passenger from Fort McMurray, booked an April 3, 2022, flight to Calgary for a medical appointment the following day. He presented a doctor’s note explaining he could not wear a mask due to "reduced lung function" following cancer surgery.

Despite acknowledging the passenger's disability, the Agency upheld the airline's decision. “WestJet indicates it adopted its policy based on an honest and good faith belief it was necessary in order to provide safe transportation services,” the regulators wrote.

The passenger sought $40,000 in damages and reimbursement for the rental car, but the claim was dismissed. “The Agency recognizes the COVID-19 pandemic was an extraordinary event that resulted in rapidly changing circumstances,” the decision read.

A mask mandate for air passengers was the first pandemic order of its kind, issued by the cabinet on April 20, 2020.

“Stay home if possible,” then-Transport Minister Marc Garneau said at the time. “However, if you need to travel, wearing a face covering is an additional measure you can take to protect others.”

Dr. Theresa Tam, the chief public health officer, reiterated the necessity of the mask mandate as late as May 3, 2022, shortly after the WestJet incident.

“What is important is preparedness,” Dr. Tam testified at the Commons health committee.

When New Democrat MP Don Davies (Vancouver Kingsway) asked if it was premature to lift federal mask mandates, Dr. Tam responded, “At the height of a sixth wave? No, I don’t think we should be lifting mask recommendations.”

The mask mandate was eventually lifted on October 1, 2022. Canadians in Privy Council focus groups had rated the mandate as largely ineffective. Mask mandates “had little impact overall with some feeling in many cases they had done more harm than good,” according to a May 16, 2022, report titled Continuous Qualitative Data Collection Of Canadians’ Views.
