Just as John Rustad’s Conservative Party of British Columbia takes the lead in the polls, Premier David Eby is pulling no stops to scandalize his main opponent.

A recent poll released Tuesday by Mainstreet Research showed that if the election were held today 39% of British Columbians would vote for the B.C. Conservatives while 35% would vote for Eby’s provincial NDP.

At a press conference, Eby criticized Rustad for several candidates nominated under his party, most of whom have been removed.

“I think John Rustad should explain how it is that consistently he is putting forward candidates that embrace and promote conspiracy theories from the darkest corners of the internet. Because actually, I think that’s his core belief as well,” Eby said, echoing a statement released by the B.C. United party on the same topic.

B.C. United received 12% of the vote in the same poll that projects Rustad ahead of the NDP.

Eby pointed to Sharon Hartwell, the B.C Conservative candidate for Bulkley Valley—Stikine as an example.

Hartwell said Tamara Lich and Chris Barber, leaders in the Freedom Convoy movement who are currently undergoing the most extended mischief trial in Canadian history, “continue to be an inspiration” on social media. Continue...

The Ford Motor Company is changing course on its electric vehicle plans in response to declining interest in the market, it announced on Wednesday.

The company will kill production of its three-row SUV and has put its next-generation pickup truck on the back burner, replacing it with a new mid-size pickup and a van.

Ford will be taking a non-cash charge of around USD $400 million to write-down the assets for the SUVs it had originally planned to manufacture, which may lead to additional losses of up to $1.5 billion.

“We are committed to innovating in America, creating jobs and delivering incredible new electric and hybrid vehicles that make a real difference in CO2 reduction,” said Ford President and CEO Jim Farley in a statement on Wednesday.

“We learned a lot as the No. 2 U.S. electric vehicle brand about what customers want and value, and what it takes to match the best in the world with cost-efficient design, and we have built a plan that gives our customers maximum choice and plays to our strengths.”

Ford is not the only major automaker that has had to delay or cancel EV production plans as a result of declining sales, General Motors has also had to do the same. Continue...

The longest-running school survey of adolescents in Canada, ongoing for almost five decades, has shown a decline in mental health in Ontario in 2023.

Almost one in five of the over 10,000 Ontario students surveyed between Nov. 2022 and June 2023 reported attempting suicide in the past year, according to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health’s Ontario Student Drug Use and Health Survey.

While 18% of students reported serious thoughts about suicide in the past year, 19% said they harmed themselves on purpose. One in twenty, 5%, of students reported attempting suicide in the past year.

The 10,145 students surveyed were in grades 7 to 12 in 848 classes across 235 schools in Ontario. The data collected were based on self-reports submitted through anonymous questionnaires.

Since monitoring began in 2007, the percentage of students who rate their mental health as fair or poor has risen from 11% to 38%. Similarly, 37% of students reported elevated stress levels, up from 29% since monitoring began in 2015. Continue...

Air Canada pilots have voted overwhelmingly in favour of a strike mandate, which could see them walking off the job as early as next month and cause massive delays for travellers.

According to the Air Line Pilots Association, which represents the over 5,400 aviators employed by Air Canada, said the vote passed with an approval rate of 98% on Thursday.

“Air Canada pilots are working under pay rates and quality-of-life provisions negotiated in 2014. Negotiations for a new agreement began in June 2023,” reads an ALPA statement released on Thursday.

“Talks entered private mediation in January 2024 and lasted until June 2024, at which point the union decided to file a notice of dispute and enter conciliation because the two sides were unable to reach a new collective agreement.”

New documents released Thursday reveal that 'confusion and chaos' reigned in the company's Renton factory that built two 737 MAX planes that later crashed, killing 346 people in 2018 and 2019, the Seattle Times reports.

According to a prominent whistleblower Ed Pierson, production issues from back then still affect MAX planes flying today. The new documents reveal multiple electrical issues that were discovered as Boeing assembled the Ethiopian Airlines jet that crashed in 2019.

The Times notes that in 2018, the FAA found that employees in another Boeing facility in Everett, WA - where electrical components for integration - had been pushed to move to fast, and produced defective pieces.

The Canadian government has moved to end Canada’s freight rail work stoppage - the first to shut down both Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Kansas City simultaneously.

However, while the two railroads say they are preparing to resume operations after Labor Minister Steven MacKinnon sent the dispute to binding arbitration, the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference says it will maintain picket lines while it reviews MacKinnon’s action.

And the CBC reports that MacKinnon’s move might not bring an immediate end to the lockouts of TCRC engineers and conductors that began at the two railroads at 12:01 a.m. today (Aug. 22).

Also locked out were rail traffic controllers at CPKC represented by the same union.

“These collective bargaining negotiations belong to CN Rail, CPKC and TCRC alone — but their effects, and the impacts of the current impasse, are being borne by all Canadians,” MacKinnon said.

“As Minister of Labour, it is my assessment that the parties are at a fundamental impasse. Therefore, it is my duty and responsibility to invoke my authorities under the Canada Labour Code to secure industrial peace and deliver the short and long-term solutions that are in the national interest.”

The existing contracts between the TCRC and both railways will be extended until new agreements are signed. Negotiated agreements are always preferable, MacKinnon said, but the needs of the nation outweighed the need for a contract deal reached at the bargaining table. Continue...

Pavel is calling for Ukraine to join NATO even if it doesn't retake all of its territory. He says the alliance shouldn't be overly concerned that it is ground zero of an ongoing conflict with Russia. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are remaining tight-lipped but have arrested and charged a person from the Greater Toronto Area accused of participating in the activities of a terrorist organization.

According to an RCMP news release, the suspect was charged with participating in the activities of a terrorist group to enhance the ability of the terrorist group to carry out terrorist activity and counselling another person to commit a terrorism offence.

A representative from the RCMP told True North that police arrested the suspect on Aug. 19 but were informed by the FBI that the suspect was living in Toronto at the time of the alleged offence in late 2021.

The offences were related to creating and distributing terrorist propaganda online, though police wouldn’t say which terrorist entity the suspect was allegedly working with.

Police have said the Youth Criminal Justice Act prevents them from releasing more information on the suspect as the alleged offences occurred when the suspect was a youth.

The RCMP continues to investigate and assess possible impacts of the alleged activity but says there are no known associated risks to the public at this time. Continue...

A crazed man killed several people who were celebrating the ‘virtues’ of diversity at a major festival in Germany Friday night.

According to Bild, the event occurred around 9:45 P.M. local time at the Festival of Diversity in Solingen, a city around 25km east of Dusseldorf. The attack happened on a central square, the Fronhof.

German Police say there were no less than nine innocent people stabbed during the attack with at least three succumbing to their injuries. Emergency workers were reportedly fighting for the others.

Alberta’s new elementary school social studies curriculum announced in spring will be piloted at schools across the province this fall.

The Alberta government announced on Friday that over 1,700 teachers have signed up to pilot the K-6 social studies curriculum released in Apr. 2024. The pilot will begin in the 2024-25 school year and occur across 429 schools.

Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides told True North that he is very pleased with the number of schools and teachers piloting the draft social studies curriculum.

“As the piloting progresses, I am looking forward to hearing from school leaders and teachers as we continue our work to build a comprehensive curriculum that builds students’ critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills and inspires a passion for learning prior to implementation for the 2025-26 school year,” said Nicolaides.

The curriculum was developed after nine months of consultation with Albertans, education partners, teachers, and parents, said the Alberta government in its press release.

This morning, York Regional Police confirmed they have located the burned remains of Yuk-Ying Anita Mui, a high-profile realtor and Chinese community leader in Greater Toronto, who is believed to have died in a targeted murder, according to detectives.

The body of the 56-year-old Markham woman, who was reported missing on August 9, 2024, was actually located two hours north in Parry Sound on August 12, police said.

The Ontario Provincial Police made the grisly discovery of the burned body that day, and investigators have now confirmed that the remains are those of Mui.

A black military family residing in Maryland is suing a DC hospital after they lost custody of their 16-year-old autistic son for refusing to let him ‘transition’ to a girl.

According to The Daily Mail, the parents hospitalized their teen son for self-harming after he broke up with a girlfriend back in 2021.

While the minor teen was hospitalized, the staff at Children’s National Hospital told the parents their son wanted to become a girl and his preferred pronouns are she/her.

The parents said their son never expressed the desire to become a girl until he spent time in the hospital. They argued in their lawsuit that their son is “impressionable” because he is autistic.

They alleged the hospital staff started a “full-on campaign to transgender this child” and forced him to write letters to friends informing them he is no longer a male.
